- 0:10God is. Teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 13, we see Jesus
- 0:46and his disciples in the upper room partaking in their Last
- 0:48Supper together before Jesus is betrayed, arrested, tried, and
- 0:53executed. During this meal, Jesus takes
- 0:56time to serve his disciples in the humblest of ways and to
- 1:00model for them what true service looks like.
- 1:03This picture and the conversation with Peter that
- 1:05ensues has much to teach us. Listen to verses 5 through 11 in
- 1:10this chapter. It says.
- 1:12Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash the
- 1:14disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel with which he was
- 1:17girded. So he came to Simon Peter.
- 1:20He said to him, Lord, do you wash my feet?
- 1:23Jesus answered and said to him, What I do you do not realize
- 1:26now, but you will understand hereafter.
- 1:30Peter said to him, never shall you wash my feet.
- 1:33Jesus answered him, if I do not wash you, you have no part with
- 1:35me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord,
- 1:38then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
- 1:41Jesus said to him, He who has bathed needs only to wash his
- 1:44feet, but is completely clean, and you are clean, but not all
- 1:48of you, for he knew the one who is betraying him.
- 1:51For this reason he said, not all of you are clean.
- 1:54Jesus here is lowering himself. He is serving his disciples and
- 1:59modeling for them and for us what real servant leadership
- 2:02looks like. During this display, Peter,
- 2:05often the first one to speak, starts to refuse.
- 2:09How could he let his master wash his feet?
- 2:11Never shall you wash my feet, he says.
- 2:14Jesus explains to Peter that anyone who would have part in
- 2:17Jesus and the salvation he offers must be washed.
- 2:21And Peter goes to the other extreme.
- 2:23If it's good to be washed, then don't just wash my feet, wash my
- 2:26hands and my head too. Jesus explains to Peter that
- 2:29anyone who has been bathed, who has been truly washed, needs
- 2:33only to wash his feet. What Jesus says here goes much
- 2:36deeper than just the dusty streets of Jerusalem.
- 2:39Jesus teaches Peter and us that it is only necessary to
- 2:42spiritually bathe once, an act that is symbolized in the
- 2:46ordinance of baptism. Jesus is talking about
- 2:48salvation. We do not need to keep being
- 2:51justified over and over and over.
- 2:54We do not need to be saved from our sin repeatedly.
- 2:57At the point that we put our faith in Christ, we are once and
- 3:00for all eternally saved from our sin.
- 3:02Nothing can snatch us from God's hand.
- 3:05We need not, as Peter request, have our head and our hands
- 3:08washed again and again. But what about the foot washing?
- 3:12Why, if we have been saved, do we need to have our feet washed?
- 3:16This symbolic foot washing represents A continual renewal
- 3:19and revival in Christ. As we live in the world, we
- 3:22inevitably pick up spiritual dust.
- 3:25We are influenced by the broken world around us, and we have the
- 3:28tendency to get tired, complacent, and jaded.
- 3:32But God has given us one another, so that as the world
- 3:36brushes up against us with its dust and its dirt, we brush up
- 3:40against one another with the refreshing, living water of
- 3:43Christ. As we gather together on the
- 3:45Lord's Day, as we fellowship with one another throughout the
- 3:48week, as we live out the one anothers of Scripture,
- 3:52encouraging, loving, forgiving, bearing with one another, we
- 3:56experience that regular but supernatural refreshment that
- 4:00God provides us. In other words, we have our feet
- 4:03washed. So praise the Lord that if
- 4:06you're in Christ, you are clean. You've been made right with God.
- 4:10But don't miss out on the reviving power of Jesus in your
- 4:13life as He uses His people to wash your feet and then take
- 4:18that reviving and refreshing that you experience and be His
- 4:21instrument among His people, encouraging your fellow
- 4:24believers with living water as they walk in this dusty world in
- 4:28which we live.
