- 1:22Speaker 1: twenty two. Uh. This listening to money making conversations that
- 1:26Speaker 1: with Stephen A. Smith. Foods are recovering from COVID, my blessings.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I've been talking to him on a daily basis. Uh.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And but a lot of people are recovering from COVID
- 1:34Speaker 1: and my staff at my office, UH have three employees
- 1:38Speaker 1: who currently have tested positive and others have been near
- 1:42Speaker 1: individuals who have been um diagnosed with testing positive COVID.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So this is something that's not going away. It's uh,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's here, and it's something that child allows to be depressed.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Don't get down, don't let COVID win. Don't don't get
- 1:57Speaker 1: let COVID win. I'm gonna keep my energy up because
- 2:00Speaker 1: guess what. I'm on this show because people have given
- 2:02Speaker 1: me the opportunity to speak to you every Tuesday. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: when I speak to you, I want to let you
- 2:06Speaker 1: know tomorrow is a better day. Today it's a great
- 2:09Speaker 1: day because you're listening to me. Not only are you
- 2:11Speaker 1: listening to me. But you're in a position to change
- 2:13Speaker 1: your life. You can't. You can change your life. You can.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You can stop your car, you can get out of
- 2:17Speaker 1: your car, you can go inside another story, you can
- 2:19Speaker 1: buy something, you can turn your television said, you can
- 2:22Speaker 1: do anything you want. Those are decisions that you make.
- 2:25Speaker 1: They may seem small to you, but there are major
- 2:27Speaker 1: decisions because there are people like that who can't not
- 2:29Speaker 1: make that same decision that you seem to believe. It's
- 2:32Speaker 1: so simple, they can't do it. My show this year
- 2:35Speaker 1: is about master classes Ty the radio show Anymore. It's
- 2:38Speaker 1: a master class, a master class on helping you change
- 2:41Speaker 1: your life. That's what money Making Conversations is about. You know. Uh,
- 2:44Speaker 1: it's been a busy week so far from me. Um
- 2:47Speaker 1: in demand. That's a good thing to say. I'm in demand.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yesterday I was on Good Day Atlanta talking to sharing
- 2:53Speaker 1: about how to change your life. Wow, we we do.
- 2:58Speaker 1: This's to the top of the year. This is when
- 3:00Speaker 1: you can reset. You can read what you've done in
- 3:04Speaker 1: stills has happened, but you can kind of reset. You
- 3:06Speaker 1: can kind of reset your goals. You can try to
- 3:08Speaker 1: refocus yourself to be a better person. You can think
- 3:13Speaker 1: about your relationship, think about your job, think about your investments,
- 3:17Speaker 1: think about losing. Wait, that's what that new year allows
- 3:19Speaker 1: you to do, to reset. So if you're resetting or
- 3:23Speaker 1: thinking about resetting, call me right now. Let's let's talk.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And what I don't want you to do is not
- 3:28Speaker 1: call because it always annoys me about people who don't
- 3:31Speaker 1: call it. I don't want nobody to know what I'm
- 3:35Speaker 1: thinking about. Well, if you don't tell somebody what you're
- 3:37Speaker 1: thinking about, if you know, tell somebody what you believe
- 3:40Speaker 1: you want to have happened in your life's not heard
- 3:43Speaker 1: by somebody, then guess what. It may not happen. But
- 3:46Speaker 1: we got a lot of things you want to talk about.
- 3:47Speaker 1: How fantastic James Bailey, He's going to be on the
- 3:50Speaker 1: show today. But more importantly, this shows your show. I
- 3:53Speaker 1: want you to understand, this is a master class. I'm
- 3:56Speaker 1: not saying my life is right, but I'm saying this,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I gotta get your life right. And on the way
- 4:00Speaker 1: them get your life right is by providing you with information.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Because right now, as I said earlier, COVID maybe winning,
- 4:07Speaker 1: but guess what, it does not have to win. It
- 4:09Speaker 1: does not have to win. If you don't know about
- 4:11Speaker 1: my one hour master class, I'm telling you I will
- 4:14Speaker 1: have my usual celebrities on, my usual entrepreneurs on, my influencers,
- 4:18Speaker 1: more and mostly important, I need you. This master class
- 4:21Speaker 1: will deliver information by career planning, motivation, financial literacy, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: how small businesses can succeed with the right twols and information.
- 4:30Speaker 1: That's my job. That's my job, ras Sean McDonald, that
- 4:33Speaker 1: is my job on w c OK to give you
- 4:35Speaker 1: the information. Now. I gave away some great information last
- 4:40Speaker 1: on my last show. I gave away by Money Making
- 4:42Speaker 1: Conversation Guide to the Success. I gave away about twenty copies.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I mailed them out personally. It was a lot of fun,
- 4:47Speaker 1: A lot of people have a lot of people called
- 4:49Speaker 1: in on that show. It's probably our business your show
- 4:51Speaker 1: over the year. But again that was the end of one.
- 4:54Speaker 1: We have a new year. Two, let's getting rock and roll.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's a new year and this time and this time
- 4:59Speaker 1: of year, always talk about making changes in our lives.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Now you always hear me on this show when we
- 5:05Speaker 1: start talking about making changes. I always tell people too,
- 5:08Speaker 1: if you have a sense of purpose or gift, to
- 5:10Speaker 1: always leave with your gift and don't let your age, friends, family,
- 5:14Speaker 1: or coworkers stop you from planning a living your dreams. Wow,
- 5:20Speaker 1: we let people stop us all the time, we really do.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But what we really do the most, we stop ourselves.
- 5:28Speaker 1: We have a general tendency to use age as an
- 5:32Speaker 1: excuse when pursuing our dreams. I welcome getting old. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: don't understand how you cannot welcome getting old if you're
- 5:40Speaker 1: trying to achieve something like because that's the only way
- 5:42Speaker 1: you can achieve your goal is to get old. I
- 5:45Speaker 1: don't care if you're eighteen, forty years sixty. You should
- 5:48Speaker 1: never use age as an excuse. Today is your time.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Today is your time, because when you have you, when
- 5:56Speaker 1: you're eighteen, you're fourty years sixty. Those age groups that
- 5:59Speaker 1: I've chose to right there mean meant something to me
- 6:02Speaker 1: and should mean something to you because eighteen, you know
- 6:05Speaker 1: you're getting out of high school. You know nobody's telling
- 6:07Speaker 1: what you're doing it more so, you have to state
- 6:10Speaker 1: in your life where you can start making those decisions.
- 6:12Speaker 1: When you start making those decisions, it can change your life.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But sometimes in the era that I grew up in,
- 6:17Speaker 1: if he was eighteen years old and you was in
- 6:19Speaker 1: the room, as they say, full of grown folks. They
- 6:22Speaker 1: tell you, step out the room, grown people talking. Well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: we can't talk like that no more to our young people.
- 6:27Speaker 1: We have to mentor our young people because technology is
- 6:30Speaker 1: available to them now that you never had. I grew
- 6:34Speaker 1: up with a rotary down telephone. It took me all
- 6:36Speaker 1: night to die nine one one on the rotary dial telephone.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You can actually speak nine one one now, So why
- 6:42Speaker 1: are you going to tell a young person who wants
- 6:44Speaker 1: to seek advice, who wants to listen to your wisdom,
- 6:47Speaker 1: step out of the room. Grown people are talking. That's
- 6:50Speaker 1: an eighteen year old person who I'm telling right now,
- 6:52Speaker 1: reach for your dreams because technology is giving you an
- 6:55Speaker 1: opportunity to reach for your dreams. Now, a's a tricky
- 6:58Speaker 1: age out here, the forty year old person. That's a
- 7:01Speaker 1: tricky age, you know, because it's not thirty people. A
- 7:05Speaker 1: lot of people used to work thirty. It's that forty
- 7:07Speaker 1: year old mark where you can really look at your
- 7:10Speaker 1: life and go, I'm not happy. I can't make a change.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I'm not with the person I want to be with.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'm not in a relationship I want to be with.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I want to make change. That's that forty year old mark.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna hold that thought, hold that fort ye old
- 7:26Speaker 1: mark because I want to get Quentin from the West
- 7:28Speaker 1: End on the call. Hey, Quentin, how you doing that?
- 7:29Speaker 1: My friend? Happy New Year's ra Sean McDonald speak New Year.
- 7:34Speaker 1: What you gotta say, Quentin? You know, Um, I love
- 7:39Speaker 1: what you're talking about. I was just um looking at
- 7:42Speaker 1: um Reverend Nike and Neville daughter talking about believing in itself.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And what I've been wanting to do is is get
- 7:50Speaker 1: my message out and talk to people more than physical space. HM.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And so I'm I'm looking for or a mentor. Do
- 8:01Speaker 1: you have any suggestions out there for people that are
- 8:03Speaker 1: looking to go in to new arenas and do something
- 8:06Speaker 1: new but you may not know how to get started. Well,
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you this. When you use the word mentor,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you first of all have to define who you are,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and then when you sit down and talk with somebody,
- 8:16Speaker 1: you can tell them your dreams accurately. See what. Because
- 8:19Speaker 1: people are approached me a lot of times and saying
- 8:20Speaker 1: they don't need a mentor, I don't know what that means,
- 8:22Speaker 1: because I don't know what you need. If you don't
- 8:24Speaker 1: know what you need, then I can't help you this
- 8:27Speaker 1: radio show every Tuesday. You can call me every tuesday.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Quitting every Tuesday, you can call me and I mentor
- 8:32Speaker 1: you right on this on these air words. If you
- 8:34Speaker 1: know what you want and you have a plan to
- 8:36Speaker 1: get there. My whole goal in life is to help
- 8:39Speaker 1: everybody who calls me, everybody who listens to me, to say,
- 8:42Speaker 1: if you don't have a plan, if you're going out
- 8:44Speaker 1: on faith, if you call me on faith, you might
- 8:46Speaker 1: want to hang up the phone call because I can't
- 8:48Speaker 1: help you on faith. But I can't help you shape
- 8:50Speaker 1: your plan. I can help you uh project your dreams.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I can help you accomplish your goals. So quittin the
- 8:57Speaker 1: whole process of being able to get a mentor is
- 9:00Speaker 1: to be able to be able to talk about what
- 9:02Speaker 1: you want, and then you'll be able to connect with
- 9:04Speaker 1: the people you want. I always use this phrase, if
- 9:06Speaker 1: you want to be a doctor, you should not be
- 9:07Speaker 1: talking to a mechanic. So if you have a dream,
- 9:10Speaker 1: you will, and you know what you want, you will
- 9:12Speaker 1: eventually get around the right people who can help you
- 9:15Speaker 1: accomplish your dream. Does that make sense? That makes perfect sense.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I definitely have a plan, um and I definitely shut
- 9:24Speaker 1: down and wrote it out over three years ago. Um
- 9:28Speaker 1: and I continue to update the plan. So I started
- 9:30Speaker 1: a YouTube channel, Congratulations, speaking young men about how to
- 9:35Speaker 1: remove life. And so I'm the next. Okay, now keep talking.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Just I'm listening to you. I'm listening to your unvail,
- 9:45Speaker 1: your dreams to my audience, telling them you have a
- 9:47Speaker 1: plan in place, and I'm allowing you to recite it
- 9:49Speaker 1: in public because I want to tell people about this
- 9:52Speaker 1: is your this this is bragging. But and that's a
- 9:55Speaker 1: good thing because see a lot of people take the
- 9:57Speaker 1: worry bragging and treat it as a negative. You know,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you should be bragging about what you're doing. You should
- 10:02Speaker 1: be bragging about your children, should be bragging about what
- 10:05Speaker 1: you accomplishing your life, your career, your work, your product,
- 10:08Speaker 1: your business. Is bragging because if you don't tell people
- 10:11Speaker 1: what you do, then guess what corporations do it all
- 10:14Speaker 1: the time. For when they advertise, that's bragging. When they're
- 10:17Speaker 1: talking about f one fifty, that's bragging. McDonald's when they advertised,
- 10:21Speaker 1: that's bragging, Target Walmart, that's bragging. But when we bragg
- 10:25Speaker 1: or we talk about it, then people say you're bragging,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you're stuck on yourself. Do not allow old terminology to
- 10:32Speaker 1: stop you from accomplishing your dreams. Corporations have been bragging
- 10:36Speaker 1: all their lives. We've accepted it, but when we try
- 10:39Speaker 1: to do it, then people try to say we are
- 10:42Speaker 1: being condescending with being self wish, we're not focused. You
- 10:45Speaker 1: should start promoting yourself. Social media allows us to do that. Now,
- 10:50Speaker 1: promote who you are, So continue to bragg, Quinn, tell
- 10:53Speaker 1: us about what you got going on in your life. Okay, So, um,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I was I'm a former school teacher, and I took
- 11:01Speaker 1: a year to travel with my family, um around the
- 11:04Speaker 1: United States of America. I have four daughters. Um. I've
- 11:08Speaker 1: been married since I was uh nineteen, So me and
- 11:11Speaker 1: my wife did to be our sixteen year UM anniversary.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Um and pretty much. I started a company out in Atlanta.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I was raised in Riverdale, Georgia. Started the company had
- 11:23Speaker 1: eleven employees at one point, um and so yeah, and
- 11:28Speaker 1: I have a master's degree in marketing. Um. I've been
- 11:33Speaker 1: doing a lot of things, but I have not been bragging.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So you see what I'm saying, and your story is compelling,
- 11:42Speaker 1: it's I'm interested. I want to hear more because see
- 11:45Speaker 1: what happens is and I want to just let people
- 11:48Speaker 1: know that. That's why I encourage people to call. Such
- 11:51Speaker 1: a blessing to me for for you to call and
- 11:53Speaker 1: for to have such a perfect story for people to
- 11:56Speaker 1: hear you. You know, you know, you know your life
- 11:59Speaker 1: is a story, is a book, and what happens is
- 12:02Speaker 1: we look at television, we look at streaming, we look
- 12:04Speaker 1: at movies, and we see those stories and we don't
- 12:07Speaker 1: think they are possible to be a part of our life.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But my man, you are a story, You are a book.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You are a wealth of knowledge. But if you don't brag,
- 12:17Speaker 1: if you don't tell us who you are, if you
- 12:19Speaker 1: don't tell us your journey, then gets what you have
- 12:22Speaker 1: no value to me to make my life better. And
- 12:24Speaker 1: that's what people don't understand. If McDonald start stop bragging,
- 12:29Speaker 1: people will stop buying their hamburgers. If talking stop advertising,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you think they're closed. If Ford stop advertising their trucks,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you stop you buy somebody else's truck. So when you brag, Quentin,
- 12:40Speaker 1: anybody who's listening to me, if you want to call
- 12:42Speaker 1: in on my show and start bragging and letting people
- 12:45Speaker 1: know about your products, let people know about your business,
- 12:47Speaker 1: let people know about your career. That's letting people know
- 12:49Speaker 1: how positive you are. That's what money making conversation is
- 12:52Speaker 1: all about, Quentin. That's it. So um and yeah, and
- 13:00Speaker 1: so what I'm looking to do now, My journey started
- 13:04Speaker 1: basically from my friend passing away at thirteen years old
- 13:07Speaker 1: in front of my face. And when I see my
- 13:09Speaker 1: friend passed away, he passed away from and large heart, unexpectedly.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And at that very moment, I realized that life end
- 13:18Speaker 1: like right now. And so that's been my motivation to
- 13:22Speaker 1: like live every day and and really go all out
- 13:27Speaker 1: and um and and it put me on the spiritual journey,
- 13:30Speaker 1: which is what I want to share with people. Um
- 13:34Speaker 1: because this journey, what they said, with flesh, we got
- 13:38Speaker 1: our having spiritual spiritual basically um before anything else. And
- 13:44Speaker 1: so like I said, I'm just looking too. Didn't bigger
- 13:47Speaker 1: platforms where I can put check the message out and
- 13:51Speaker 1: really you know, connect with people out here that I
- 13:53Speaker 1: know are looking for the message. And so I'm to
- 14:00Speaker 1: do Quinn. I'm about to go to break. But every Tuesday,
- 14:04Speaker 1: just call me up Rashan. This is my this is
- 14:06Speaker 1: my topic this week. This is my topic this week,
- 14:10Speaker 1: so we can start getting helping you get your message
- 14:12Speaker 1: out because you're trying to change lives, your brother, Okay,
- 14:16Speaker 1: if you want to change lives, guess what you need help.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm I'm help, I'm h E L P. I'm helped
- 14:22Speaker 1: for anybody like you. So every Tuesday, brother, don't disappoint me, Quentin.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Every Tuesday's first break can always be the break that
- 14:29Speaker 1: people can call and talk to Rashan, because the next break,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I got my man James Bailey coming on and all
- 14:34Speaker 1: my guests will start coming on and we'll be taking
- 14:36Speaker 1: cured questions for those and those people who want to
- 14:38Speaker 1: ask them questions. But more important, Quentin, we're gonna talk
- 14:41Speaker 1: next week quitting from the West Side. Next week, Okay,
- 14:44Speaker 1: we will be right back with more money making Conversation
- 14:47Speaker 1: with Rashan McDonald. You are now tuned into the money
- 14:52Speaker 1: Making Conversations Minute of Inspiration with Rashan McDonald. Lisa Davis
- 14:56Speaker 1: is currently an anchor for ABC News Live Prime and
- 15:00Speaker 1: Weekend World's News Tonight on Sundays, we talked about the
- 15:03Speaker 1: difference between news and opinionated journalism. It's always about the facts,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and I think that It's also about knowing what you
- 15:10Speaker 1: don't know. And so I think that when you don't
- 15:12Speaker 1: have a lot of variation, a lot of variety of
- 15:15Speaker 1: perspectives and lenses and experiences at the proverbial table, then
- 15:20Speaker 1: you're missing some of the nuance to the story right
- 15:23Speaker 1: and some of the relevant facts get thrown aside. I
- 15:27Speaker 1: don't think that I'm coloring it if it with anything,
- 15:30Speaker 1: except that I do come with the perspective and the
- 15:33Speaker 1: experience of being a black woman in America, and so
- 15:36Speaker 1: I think that I may have certain questions that I'm
- 15:38Speaker 1: going to ask or that I'm going to lean into
- 15:40Speaker 1: based on my own experience. If you want to hear
- 15:43Speaker 1: this full interview with Lindsay Davis, visit Money Making Conversation

- 16:40Speaker 1: all your heart with great gifts from Coals or Coals
- 16:43Speaker 1: dot Com. Now let's return to money making conversation with
- 16:47Speaker 1: Rashawn McDonald. My name is Rashan McDonald. If you don't
- 16:50Speaker 1: know what mean, you can google me. You'll find my
- 16:53Speaker 1: career is interesting. My career is us taking a lot
- 16:56Speaker 1: of incredible journeys and journeys that I didn't believe I
- 16:59Speaker 1: could even dream about what I did dream about them,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and they happened because of the fact that I could
- 17:05Speaker 1: consider that possibility. That's what I ways tell people. Dream.
- 17:08Speaker 1: If you dream, it becomes possible. If you talk about it,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it can happen. Because if somebody hears your thoughts, if
- 17:15Speaker 1: somebody hears your dreams and they agree with it, then
- 17:18Speaker 1: they can help you make it happen. But if you
- 17:20Speaker 1: stay silent, if you stay, as they say, too humble,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you are you are you following that path of people
- 17:26Speaker 1: telling you, oh, don't don't brag, don't don't. No, I'm
- 17:30Speaker 1: telling you you better brag. You'd be able to tell
- 17:32Speaker 1: people what you want. That's what social media is all about.
- 17:34Speaker 1: That's why you've been giving this gift of TikTok and
- 17:38Speaker 1: Instagram and Facebook and Twitter, because now you can promote.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You can talk. You know, you can tell people about
- 17:46Speaker 1: your sandwich. You can tell people about your brag about
- 17:49Speaker 1: your children. You can talk about your recovery from cancer.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You can talk about your ability to be great. You
- 17:55Speaker 1: can talk about different things that are complished. You can
- 17:57Speaker 1: motivate yourself and motivate other fee through your life story,
- 18:01Speaker 1: your telling. That's what bragging needs all about. Muhammed Elite
- 18:05Speaker 1: is the greatest bragger of all time. I am the greatest,
- 18:09Speaker 1: he said, and guess what, to this day, we still
- 18:13Speaker 1: believe he is the greatest. And prime Time deon Prime
- 18:17Speaker 1: Time is amazing. I can't read that. Oh James, there, okay,
- 18:22Speaker 1: cool I'm gonna go to my next guest. I mean,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I've been waiting on him. He's amazing, and I just
- 18:28Speaker 1: want to remind everybody that every Tuesday. This is the
- 18:31Speaker 1: first master class session. We started today and the master
- 18:34Speaker 1: class session will continue all the way to June February four.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Every Tuesday will do two different topics. So don't go anywhere.
- 18:41Speaker 1: You want to talk to us, please talk to us.
- 18:43Speaker 1: But let's get started with My first guest of the
- 18:46Speaker 1: year is my guests in the Shore is James Bailey.
- 18:49Speaker 1: He is the president of the CEO of Russell Innovation
- 18:52Speaker 1: Center for Entrepreneurs. RICE Right is an economic mobility unit
- 18:57Speaker 1: engine for the community, driving entrepreneurs and small business owners
- 19:00Speaker 1: to innovate, grow, create jobs, and build wealth. The house
- 19:04Speaker 1: over fifty thou square feet of convening, meeting and innovative space.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I've been over there. Isn't the Brilliants right down the
- 19:12Speaker 1: street from the restaurant that I go to all the time.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna let him talk to us about it because
- 19:16Speaker 1: of the fact that he's his his I want to
- 19:18Speaker 1: say his brain child, but I gotta say it comes
- 19:20Speaker 1: out of his brain because I toured over there and
- 19:23Speaker 1: I was. I was blown away. In fact, it inspired
- 19:25Speaker 1: me to do what I'm doing now with thirty fifty
- 19:27Speaker 1: media when I want in bought the building the last
- 19:30Speaker 1: September of so let's bring to the show on money
- 19:33Speaker 1: making conversations my first guest of the year, Mr James Bailey.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Hey James, how you doing? Sean? Man? If I knew
- 19:39Speaker 1: I was the first guest of the year, brother, Well
- 19:43Speaker 1: you know something, James. You know I've been hunting you down.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I've been hunting down because I've been wanting to get
- 19:49Speaker 1: you on the show. Man. I started in September. When
- 19:51Speaker 1: you start talking about entrepreneurship, I think what you're doing
- 19:55Speaker 1: at the uh at the rice is the is the
- 19:58Speaker 1: is the right person to talk to it because you
- 20:00Speaker 1: have a structure, you have a building and your place
- 20:02Speaker 1: that believes in it. Let's let's get a little before
- 20:04Speaker 1: we get into Let's get a little history, a little
- 20:06Speaker 1: background on you in your career. How did it all
- 20:08Speaker 1: get started for you that got you headed in this direction?
- 20:11Speaker 1: You know, brother, it's amazing the power of Rashaan. Do
- 20:15Speaker 1: you hear echo? Brother? That could get back to you.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Uh no, so I hear you very clearly sir, okay, Uh,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know it's it's amazing the power of presence. I
- 20:25Speaker 1: started my first business at twelve. But because I did that,
- 20:29Speaker 1: because my barber whispered in my ear son, you need
- 20:33Speaker 1: to go find you something you love and go make
- 20:34Speaker 1: money doing it. Um. That one statement in my ear
- 20:38Speaker 1: and there's a longer story for another time, literally shaped
- 20:41Speaker 1: the travictory of my life. I saw everything different. Nobody
- 20:44Speaker 1: in my life up to that point and talked to
- 20:47Speaker 1: me about ownership. I had never heard the word entrepreneurship. Uh.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And my first business the thing that I love then
- 20:54Speaker 1: with steer car stereo equipment. So the age of twelve, brother,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I started my own car stereo equipment business. And uh
- 21:00Speaker 1: quite honestly, the only reason that I went to college
- 21:04Speaker 1: is because of that business. I was not the best student.
- 21:07Speaker 1: In fact, I was a horrible student, Brandon gifted in kindergarten. However,
- 21:13Speaker 1: my aspiration to be successful in business meant my need
- 21:16Speaker 1: for education cool became relevant and I took off AP
- 21:19Speaker 1: physics a calculus because hell, it would have been called
- 21:22Speaker 1: stem education back then. I was dealing with Holmes and
- 21:25Speaker 1: wattage and installing in stereo. Um. So those way to
- 21:30Speaker 1: great point average is actually raised my g p A
- 21:33Speaker 1: up just enough to qualify to go to the university
- 21:35Speaker 1: in Georgia. So entrepreneurship throughout my journey. BRO started my
- 21:38Speaker 1: first business at twelve, I bought my house first house
- 21:42Speaker 1: at nineteen, made my first million at twenty four. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: I did not have good money role models, so I
- 21:49Speaker 1: went from living in a ten thousand square foot home
- 21:51Speaker 1: to being homeless. By the time I was uh, four
- 21:55Speaker 1: years later, I was helping grow a thirty million dollar
- 21:57Speaker 1: non profit in ten countries and now this latest thing
- 22:01Speaker 1: that I'm a part of, the Russell Center. Uh. There
- 22:05Speaker 1: are very few times in life we get to be
- 22:07Speaker 1: a part of something, you know out last year, uh,
- 22:09Speaker 1: and they're even rare moments where you get to be
- 22:11Speaker 1: a part of something that could potentially change the course
- 22:14Speaker 1: of history. And I think what we're doing at five
- 22:17Speaker 1: O four Fair Street, with the largest center in the
- 22:20Speaker 1: world dedicated to growing and scaling black businesses, has the
- 22:24Speaker 1: capacity to change the world. We know what you know
- 22:28Speaker 1: I was just talking about. I don't know if you
- 22:29Speaker 1: heard the earlier part of the shows. By bragging, you
- 22:32Speaker 1: bragging and promoting and as black people, we do you
- 22:35Speaker 1: know we don't understand that because we were trying to
- 22:38Speaker 1: tend to humble ourselves and say, hey, don't talk, don't
- 22:41Speaker 1: promote yourself. You know you can't. You can't brag about
- 22:44Speaker 1: your success. You know that's gloating and you gotta be
- 22:47Speaker 1: able to market yourself. I know you. You took me
- 22:50Speaker 1: on the tour of this facility. I saw the early
- 22:54Speaker 1: stages when it when it wasn't complete. Now I saw
- 22:57Speaker 1: the brilliance of it. I saw that and you and
- 23:00Speaker 1: you was telling me what we're gonna do this, We're
- 23:02Speaker 1: gonna do this, We're gonna have this location over here,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and you just walk me to room, the room, the room.
- 23:07Speaker 1: And if you didn't talk like that, James, about the facility,
- 23:12Speaker 1: I would not have been inspired by that. Talk about
- 23:15Speaker 1: how people mix message when you're trying to trying to
- 23:18Speaker 1: grow your brand, trying to talk about your business, and
- 23:20Speaker 1: then you can be met with oh you're just gloating,
- 23:23Speaker 1: Oh you just bragging? Are you just too much? You
- 23:27Speaker 1: know I've battled with that because and I think that
- 23:31Speaker 1: the words that escapes all of it is authenticity. If
- 23:35Speaker 1: you are true to your brand, if you're true to
- 23:38Speaker 1: your mission, if you truly believe in what you're doing
- 23:42Speaker 1: and it comes off as authentic, I think you start
- 23:45Speaker 1: to mitigate some of those kind of societal community issues
- 23:50Speaker 1: because people can feel the energy. They can feel that,
- 23:53Speaker 1: you know what, this brother right here is absolutely in
- 23:55Speaker 1: it for the right reason. Ain't bragging. He's just seeing
- 23:59Speaker 1: a vision and I want to catch that vision. So
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think that is one of the things that that
- 24:05Speaker 1: needs to be lifted up. And when we started talking
- 24:08Speaker 1: about entrepreneurship and small business, are you true to it?
- 24:12Speaker 1: And if you're true to it people who know Now
- 24:15Speaker 1: he's an interesting thing about it. Now, Rice or Russell
- 24:18Speaker 1: Center invest in Black entrepreneurs, strengthens back, strengthens businesses, and
- 24:23Speaker 1: create community. Those three things I took out of my
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know, doing my research and everything about the center.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Now when I walk through that, how does one who's listening,
- 24:32Speaker 1: how does want to get involved? And what type of
- 24:34Speaker 1: individuals come to your facility for success? You know, I
- 24:38Speaker 1: sold HBCU model. I think the far too often we
- 24:42Speaker 1: start programs with the only goal in informative. We need
- 24:48Speaker 1: things that are focused on being transformative. And so I
- 24:52Speaker 1: need to be able to help the guy that's leaving
- 24:54Speaker 1: the post office after fifteen years and just wants to
- 24:57Speaker 1: start out on this leaving all the way up. The
- 25:00Speaker 1: person is trying to scale a business north of fifty
- 25:02Speaker 1: or undred million dollars. So our big idea platform inspired develop, execute, accelerate, scale,
- 25:08Speaker 1: allow somebody at the earliest stages of an idea. Who
- 25:12Speaker 1: we're also there to help somebody at the later stage
- 25:15Speaker 1: of the growth in scale. UM. You know we we
- 25:18Speaker 1: we are because who we are, we had to cast
- 25:23Speaker 1: a wide net to make sure that we're able to
- 25:26Speaker 1: provide hope to people. Man, I mean, post pandemic, We're
- 25:29Speaker 1: gonna need more of the symbols of hope. We're gonna
- 25:30Speaker 1: need institutions to manufacturer, and we hope to be one
- 25:34Speaker 1: of those institutions. So we are currently UM Industry Agnostics.
- 25:39Speaker 1: If you have a dream, if you have an ambition,
- 25:41Speaker 1: you want to start a business, you want to grow
- 25:43Speaker 1: a business, we have a platform to help you do that,
- 25:46Speaker 1: meets you where you are and help you get to
- 25:48Speaker 1: where you're trying to go. You're really interesting. When I
- 25:52Speaker 1: hear you talking, I hear about a the word entrepreneur. UM,
- 25:57Speaker 1: I have an idea what that is? I really do
- 25:59Speaker 1: but also know a lot of people don't have an
- 26:01Speaker 1: idea what there is, you know, because the word small
- 26:04Speaker 1: business pops into that word. That's not the same thing
- 26:07Speaker 1: as a small business owner and entrepreneurs. That's the same thing.
- 26:10Speaker 1: What what what what what? Because there's there's so many
- 26:13Speaker 1: words out there, we get confused and you have so
- 26:15Speaker 1: many ways you can get a small business loan, and
- 26:16Speaker 1: you can't get a small business loan. The PPP out there,
- 26:19Speaker 1: they covidcame, that Kevi, we went that COVID back, got
- 26:22Speaker 1: a free called Armacron. You know, it's like, what do
- 26:26Speaker 1: we go if if a person is trying to go
- 26:28Speaker 1: out there trying to break change, we realize that you know, unemployment.
- 26:32Speaker 1: You know, people don't even want to return back to
- 26:34Speaker 1: for their all week jobs. They don't They stayed at home.
- 26:38Speaker 1: They don't want to go back. They feel as a
- 26:40Speaker 1: different life emotionally, they don't want to deal with the
- 26:43Speaker 1: stress of what that company or that corporate world was
- 26:46Speaker 1: offering them. Now they want to be an entrepreneur. How
- 26:48Speaker 1: do they break that cycle and take advantage of the
- 26:51Speaker 1: opportunities you guys are providing at the Russell Center. You know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I see him different and everybody as their own finishing
- 27:00Speaker 1: to what entrepreneurship is, what it's not. Um, I'm just
- 27:04Speaker 1: a firm believer. Entrepreneurs and problem solvers and small business
- 27:09Speaker 1: owners are ones that can capitalize on opportunities. You know,
- 27:12Speaker 1: Entrepreneurs look at a landscape and see what's not there
- 27:16Speaker 1: and they try to create it. They try to fill
- 27:18Speaker 1: that gap in In my opinion, entrepreneurship is literally a
- 27:21Speaker 1: problem met with an economic solution. Now you may involve
- 27:26Speaker 1: into becoming a small business owner. You've got a repeatable
- 27:28Speaker 1: business model, whether you're not just working on the business
- 27:31Speaker 1: for the business works for you. I think they're different,
- 27:34Speaker 1: and I think they're wired. You and I could go
- 27:36Speaker 1: and buy Tim Popeye's franchises and we be in business
- 27:40Speaker 1: and we make decent money, but we haven't solved a
- 27:43Speaker 1: big problems. And I think entrepreneurs are uniquely equipped to
- 27:47Speaker 1: solve the big problems in society faces and they make
- 27:51Speaker 1: money doing it. Wow, we will be right back with
- 27:56Speaker 1: more money Making conversation with Rushan McDonald. You are now
- 28:01Speaker 1: tuned into the money making conversations. Minute of Inspiration with
- 28:04Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald. I sat down with my man Todd Delaney
- 28:08Speaker 1: at the age of eighteen, he was focusing on pursuing
- 28:10Speaker 1: his baseball career and was drafted by the New York Mets.
- 28:14Speaker 1: During this pursuit, he realized there was a higher call
- 28:17Speaker 1: it on his life and left the world sports to
- 28:19Speaker 1: pursue a career as a gospel recording artists. He is
- 28:22Speaker 1: revered as one of the influencers of the next generation
- 28:25Speaker 1: of gospel music. Here's what Todd Delaney had to say.
- 28:28Speaker 1: The crazy thing about so how much we put so
- 28:30Speaker 1: much emphasis on force in America, Like if you make
- 28:33Speaker 1: it to the top of the sports, they think that's
- 28:35Speaker 1: the greatest thing. But for me, impact, impact was the
- 28:39Speaker 1: was the greatest thing. I said, Man, how can I
- 28:40Speaker 1: impact the world? Don't ever chase the dollar? You know
- 28:43Speaker 1: what I'm saying that it's not that it's not the dollar,
- 28:45Speaker 1: chase the impact. How can you make an impact on
- 28:47Speaker 1: other people's lives and the money will chase you? And
- 28:50Speaker 1: so I'm in a really beautiful place right now. If
- 28:52Speaker 1: you were to listen to this full interview with Todd
- 28:54Speaker 1: Delaney is available on Money Making Conversation dot com. Look
- 28:59Speaker 1: at your children eyes to see the true magic of
- 29:02Speaker 1: a forest. It's a storybook world for them. You look
- 29:06Speaker 1: and see a tree. They see the wrinkled face of
- 29:08Speaker 1: a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky. They see
- 29:12Speaker 1: treasure and pebbles. They see a windy path that could
- 29:15Speaker 1: lead to adventure, and they see you. They're fearless. Guide.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Is this fascinating world? Find a forest near you and
- 29:23Speaker 1: start exploring and discover the forest dot org brought to
- 29:26Speaker 1: you by the United States Forest Service and the Council.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Now let's return to money making conversation with Rashaan McDonald.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I'm talking to the president and CEO of RICE with
- 29:37Speaker 1: the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs. Georgia bull Dog. At
- 29:42Speaker 1: least had to bring that up on you, this thing.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I could not when you said you went to Georgia.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You know, I couldn't leave phone calls when I bring
- 29:49Speaker 1: it up to Georgia bull Dog. How are you feeling?
- 29:51Speaker 1: How are you feeling? It is the show to be
- 29:55Speaker 1: national camp you, George bull Dog. We're gonna go on
- 30:00Speaker 1: a record. See that's all I'm saying that you cannot
- 30:04Speaker 1: be in this city and not because I remember when
- 30:06Speaker 1: I met you. Man, if we half our conversation, Man
- 30:08Speaker 1: was about to George the bulldogs and to see them
- 30:10Speaker 1: about to about to do it, right, dude, take down
- 30:13Speaker 1: that big bad Alabama next month. It's gonna be special. Brother.
- 30:18Speaker 1: You couldn't have said a better. Big Bad Alabama's conform
- 30:21Speaker 1: to go down hungry. These dogs want to eat. And uh,
- 30:26Speaker 1: it's just our time at a long time. If we
- 30:29Speaker 1: held up a ray you know, you know, I always
- 30:31Speaker 1: doing researcher about this big ideas model, and you brought
- 30:35Speaker 1: it up in conversation, and we always talked about catchy phrases.
- 30:39Speaker 1: We always talk about things that you know to get
- 30:41Speaker 1: people noticed. You. Now, if I just want to slow
- 30:45Speaker 1: down in this break and find out exactly what you
- 30:47Speaker 1: meant when you say big idea model, What exactly is
- 30:51Speaker 1: that our big the ideas model. It's um when I
- 30:56Speaker 1: said I took a page out of the HPU book,
- 31:00Speaker 1: is looking at how I can be a green freshman
- 31:04Speaker 1: and not know anything and I start freshman year. I'm
- 31:07Speaker 1: not taking senior level of course because I am not ready.
- 31:10Speaker 1: And if I don't master everything that freshman year, I
- 31:14Speaker 1: don't become a sophomore. If I've not completed all of
- 31:17Speaker 1: my court work, I don't graduate. So in our platform
- 31:21Speaker 1: we don't really believe in social promotion because I think
- 31:24Speaker 1: part of the issue is in the marketplace. Far too
- 31:27Speaker 1: often the programming is just based on time, not already
- 31:33Speaker 1: and so inspired developed execute accelerated scale takes a company
- 31:38Speaker 1: from just a concept to to actually a concept or
- 31:43Speaker 1: like a curiosity concept, and then a company company to
- 31:48Speaker 1: customers customers that you know, to scale, and so we're
- 31:52Speaker 1: moving someone along a continuum of engagement rather than just
- 31:57Speaker 1: a programmatic approach. But also, brother, I go, I want
- 32:00Speaker 1: to say again from a model, if you, if you,
- 32:03Speaker 1: and I went out and talked to a brother from
- 32:05Speaker 1: more House or Howard or sister from Spelman and asked
- 32:09Speaker 1: them to talk for two minutes about their experience of
- 32:12Speaker 1: their their institution. Although they spent over two hundred thousand
- 32:15Speaker 1: dollars on their education, spent nine of their time in
- 32:19Speaker 1: the classroom. When we asked them to talk for two
- 32:21Speaker 1: minutes about their time at Spellment, they're not gonna bring
- 32:24Speaker 1: up a single class they took. It was about the community,
- 32:28Speaker 1: the culture, the covenant of what it meant to be
- 32:31Speaker 1: a more houseman or a spellboun woman. You wrapped that
- 32:33Speaker 1: around the world class curriculum, World class instructors. Now you've
- 32:37Speaker 1: got something that's more than just a program, and it's
- 32:40Speaker 1: exactly how we were building our big ideas. Platform do
- 32:44Speaker 1: not just to be about programming and information sharing, but
- 32:47Speaker 1: how can we be transformationals? Wow? Oh yeah, Roy? He
- 32:51Speaker 1: from Roy, You're still on the call on the line
- 32:54Speaker 1: from Stone Mountains. How you do on line with Roshan McDonald,
- 32:57Speaker 1: Mr James Bailey? How are you doing? Got a question
- 32:59Speaker 1: for us? Like you want that for comments? I'm good,
- 33:02Speaker 1: I'm good. I have a sort of like a two
- 33:04Speaker 1: part question here. Um. Now, I just saw a quote
- 33:08Speaker 1: from Drake and this is kind of you know. Got
- 33:12Speaker 1: me is that you know what you all were talking about,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you know the different things that you do, and you're successful,
- 33:17Speaker 1: and you know you have other people around and you
- 33:19Speaker 1: think you know you're you're talking about your success stories,
- 33:22Speaker 1: but they feel like you might be brack. Now I might.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I worked like seven days a week, I'm always doing something.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I am an entrepreneur. I can consider myself and be
- 33:33Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, but I'm not the type of person. I've
- 33:37Speaker 1: heard the old sayings saying that you would have to
- 33:40Speaker 1: find new friends if your friends can't educate you, if
- 33:44Speaker 1: you're the smartest one in the group, or whatever the
- 33:46Speaker 1: case may be. I don't like switching and you know,
- 33:50Speaker 1: getting new friends. I I like the friends that I have,
- 33:53Speaker 1: but some of them just can't relate to my success.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And you know, not necessarily saying that they show it,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but I feel like all the time when I'm talking
- 34:04Speaker 1: about things, I'm bragging about different things that I'm doing
- 34:08Speaker 1: in my life. So I mean, how do you do?
- 34:11Speaker 1: What are you doing that? Chast'na right over to Mr
- 34:14Speaker 1: Bailey because that's why I love his facility is the
- 34:17Speaker 1: innovation Center because when you're walk into you're not bragging,
- 34:20Speaker 1: You're talking to mentors, You're talking to peers. Isn't exactly
- 34:24Speaker 1: what you're doing over there is making people like Row
- 34:27Speaker 1: be comfortable. Am I correct? Bailey brother, It's all about
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's all about belongings and Roy, thank you for the question. Man.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You know your friends or your friends and you know,
- 34:38Speaker 1: I don't necessarily described to the no new friends model
- 34:41Speaker 1: because you gotta find your tribe and this business. When
- 34:44Speaker 1: you're an entrepreneur, it is a very lonely place. The anxiety,
- 34:48Speaker 1: the depression, the self esteem hits that you take. You
- 34:53Speaker 1: need to be fortified by people that you see it.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Sometimes you just need to hear somebody say, man, that's
- 34:58Speaker 1: gonna work, or I believe or I see it, or
- 35:01Speaker 1: I can help. And you've got to expand and be
- 35:05Speaker 1: willing to expand your network, because there an entrepreneur with
- 35:09Speaker 1: no network ain't an entrepreneurs that's gonna be around for
- 35:12Speaker 1: very long. And an entrepreneur that is willing to expand
- 35:16Speaker 1: that network to feel the needs to he or she
- 35:18Speaker 1: has is the one that's gonna prosper. Brothers, find your tribe,
- 35:22Speaker 1: and Rashawn is absolutely right, you know, keep your friends
- 35:25Speaker 1: on the outside of entrepreneurship that may not see it,
- 35:28Speaker 1: but find this safe space to fail and fly where
- 35:31Speaker 1: you can be surrounded by people that see it and
- 35:34Speaker 1: think it like you. Brother, It's critical critical to your
- 35:39Speaker 1: to your success going forward. I MEAs you this with
- 35:41Speaker 1: with with raw still on the call here, James, how
- 35:44Speaker 1: can your your facility, your center be an asset to
- 35:48Speaker 1: somebody like him? Can you help us that? Yeah? I
- 35:51Speaker 1: mean I think that wherever Roy is and wherever you are, brother,
- 35:54Speaker 1: on your journey, we're able to look at a company
- 35:57Speaker 1: for where they are and then prescribe a pathway to
- 36:01Speaker 1: where they want to be, uniquely tailored to their growth trajectory,
- 36:05Speaker 1: not just some other things. Maybe he doesn't want to
- 36:07Speaker 1: be the next Facebook or the next Google or the
- 36:09Speaker 1: next Amazon. Let us focus on Roy the entrepreneur, Roy's business,
- 36:14Speaker 1: Roy's vision, and help fill in the gaps that will
- 36:17Speaker 1: help them get there. And you know, on top of that,
- 36:20Speaker 1: Rashan outside of the classroom date back to that HBCU model.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Part of the power of the HBCU model is it
- 36:28Speaker 1: a lot of the learning happens outside of the classroom.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That's where you meet your best friend. That's where you
- 36:33Speaker 1: pledge your fraternity, That's where you meet the girl that
- 36:36Speaker 1: you fall in love with. That's where you find the
- 36:38Speaker 1: people that stay with you for the rest of your life.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And if we create this community and this covenant, entrepreneurs
- 36:44Speaker 1: like Roy get absorbed into it, they start to fill
- 36:47Speaker 1: those gaps of people that they need in their life
- 36:50Speaker 1: to be successful. Yes, it did. And uh, the next
- 36:57Speaker 1: question was gonna be about getting intour you know, because
- 37:01Speaker 1: I feel like sometimes I'm staggnant and you know, I
- 37:05Speaker 1: think that I'm doing so and I just I really
- 37:08Speaker 1: need some mentorship to be able to help me with
- 37:12Speaker 1: and guide me at this level. You know, James, I
- 37:15Speaker 1: started this show because you know, Monimating Conversation platform is
- 37:19Speaker 1: a mentoring platform. Because you go to my website monimating
- 37:22Speaker 1: conversation dot com, you see interviews like I'm doing with James.
- 37:25Speaker 1: You can hear them and listen to the back and
- 37:27Speaker 1: and it's broken down to different categories from entertaining to
- 37:30Speaker 1: sports two to entrepreneurship. All these different directors and writers
- 37:34Speaker 1: and all these different categories that you can listen Tobody speak.
- 37:38Speaker 1: But I know I get that a lot of James
- 37:40Speaker 1: people asking for mentors where they can go. I can't
- 37:44Speaker 1: always answer that question. Can you assist? Can you give
- 37:47Speaker 1: some lane of some light to somebody like Roy on
- 37:50Speaker 1: what they can go to get mentorship? Yeah, it's part
- 37:53Speaker 1: of our platform. It's it's matching you with the people
- 37:57Speaker 1: that you need to be successful. And mentorship comes in
- 38:01Speaker 1: a lot of form. There's a higher level that I
- 38:03Speaker 1: call sponsorship, the people to believe you enough to not
- 38:07Speaker 1: allow you to fail. Um. So you know, Roy, if
- 38:10Speaker 1: it's if it's places like the Russell Center, or as
- 38:13Speaker 1: places like the Urban League, or they're in Atlanta, we
- 38:16Speaker 1: are uniquely positioned because we have so many organizations that
- 38:20Speaker 1: are working to help black businesses grow. I just urge
- 38:25Speaker 1: you to have the courage to reach out and to
- 38:27Speaker 1: raise your hand, to be vulnerable enough to say, hey,
- 38:29Speaker 1: I need help, as you've done on this called my
- 38:31Speaker 1: friends and saying I need a mentor to keep me focused,
- 38:34Speaker 1: to keep me forward. Um, and you need that. You
- 38:38Speaker 1: need that tribe around you to keep you moving, brother,
- 38:41Speaker 1: And we'll be happy to help. If you go to
- 38:43Speaker 1: our site Russell Center dot org. Uh, fill out the information.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Somebody from our office will reach out. Brother. I believe
- 38:50Speaker 1: we're bringing on new companies to stakeholders in February. Uh
- 38:54Speaker 1: so yeah, brother, we're here to help protecting my call.
- 39:01Speaker 1: You know, I just tell Mr Bailey, Mr Bailey right here,
- 39:04Speaker 1: he's a regular contributor. He don't know it yet, but
- 39:06Speaker 1: here a regularly contributor. Money may confortation, you know, Mr Awesome,
- 39:15Speaker 1: I look forward to it. You know, when we we
- 39:17Speaker 1: we we we we're you know the whole purpose of
- 39:19Speaker 1: what I'm trying to do here. And you're having used
- 39:21Speaker 1: my first guest because you know, if the people always
- 39:24Speaker 1: start out with these goals, I'm gonna you know, it's oh,
- 39:27Speaker 1: I can do some new resolutions. Now I can lose weight,
- 39:30Speaker 1: or I can start a business, or I can I
- 39:33Speaker 1: can be a better parent, or a better husband, a
- 39:35Speaker 1: better wife, or better just a better person than there's
- 39:37Speaker 1: a better business person. So that's why I felt I
- 39:40Speaker 1: needed to launch with your voice, your unique sensibilities, to
- 39:44Speaker 1: let people know this is the top of the year.
- 39:46Speaker 1: This is a moment where you can change things. But
- 39:49Speaker 1: don't forget. Whatever you did wrong in one gonna follow
- 39:53Speaker 1: you into two and so. But that doesn't mean the
- 39:56Speaker 1: opportunities for change of success can be denied. You talk
- 40:00Speaker 1: to us in in in in some terminology, how your center,
- 40:05Speaker 1: how your philosophy can get people rooted in sadness, rooting
- 40:09Speaker 1: in depression, rooted in doubt, to move forward positivity whether
- 40:15Speaker 1: you become what you behold. And if you're surrounded by positivity,
- 40:20Speaker 1: you know, chances are you gonna rub off on you know.
- 40:22Speaker 1: The thing that I do love about the Center is
- 40:25Speaker 1: this is think of a black man seventy four years ago,
- 40:29Speaker 1: Heavenly audacity and the Jim Crow segregated racist South to
- 40:34Speaker 1: build a headquarter building. It's a full city, black wide
- 40:36Speaker 1: and fifty thousand square feet, the courage that that entrepreneur had, Mr. H. J.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Russell Senior, that energy still lives in the building, man,
- 40:45Speaker 1: and that building is gonna be here for fifty more years.
- 40:48Speaker 1: So when you talk about falling and failing and flying
- 40:53Speaker 1: and storing, we've always missed that that that common denominator,
- 40:59Speaker 1: that thing that is always there to pick us up
- 41:01Speaker 1: when we fall or to celebrate us when we fly.
- 41:04Speaker 1: And this is again more than just a building, more
- 41:07Speaker 1: than just a program for the Russell family and the
- 41:11Speaker 1: Russell family of businesses. This institution has been a beacon
- 41:15Speaker 1: the hope in this city for multiple decades and now
- 41:19Speaker 1: we have the opportunity to build on that legacy. Brother.
- 41:21Speaker 1: So yeah, again, back to that surround yourself with with
- 41:25Speaker 1: with positivity, surround yourself with other people that are striving,
- 41:28Speaker 1: that are growing, that are struggling just like you. It's
- 41:32Speaker 1: the kind of community that's necessary for our community to thrive. Wow.
- 41:38Speaker 1: When we come back on out that break, I want
- 41:40Speaker 1: to I want you to talk a little bit more
- 41:41Speaker 1: about the Russell family. We will be right back with
- 41:44Speaker 1: more money making conversations with your hosts. For Sean McDonald
- 41:50Speaker 1: adoption of teams from foster care is a topic not
- 41:52Speaker 1: enough people know about, and we're here to change that.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I'm April Denuity, host of the new podcast Navigating Adoption,
- 41:58Speaker 1: presented by Adopted us Kids. Each episode brings you compelling,
- 42:02Speaker 1: real life adoption stories told by the families that lived them,
- 42:05Speaker 1: with commentary from experts. Visit adopt us Kids dot org,
- 42:09Speaker 1: slash podcasts, or subscribe to Navigating Adoption presented by adopt
- 42:13Speaker 1: us Kids, brought to you by the U S Department
- 42:15Speaker 1: of Health and Human Service as Administration for Children and
- 42:17Speaker 1: Families and the Council. Welcome back to money making Conversations
- 42:22Speaker 1: with your host, Rashwan McDonald. I want to give away
- 42:26Speaker 1: five ideas I called five tips on improving your ability
- 42:29Speaker 1: to win. If you want to add to this a
- 42:31Speaker 1: little bit on the on the on the other side
- 42:33Speaker 1: of the break, please do, James, because you do. I
- 42:35Speaker 1: respect you. You know. Number one, Identify your strengths. That's
- 42:39Speaker 1: very key because a lot of people don't understand that
- 42:41Speaker 1: you might have a product that they liked that don't
- 42:43Speaker 1: mean that anybody else would like it. Identify where you
- 42:47Speaker 1: could use some improvement right there. That means criticism. See
- 42:52Speaker 1: a lot of people can't handle criticism. They can't handle
- 42:55Speaker 1: somebody coming up to tell them, Hey, you know, if
- 42:57Speaker 1: you worked a little harder at this, you can be
- 42:58Speaker 1: better if you if you if you study a little harder,
- 43:01Speaker 1: you could be smarter. If you exercise a little bit more,
- 43:06Speaker 1: you can be stronger. That's called improvement. Consider the benefits
- 43:10Speaker 1: of change. Change can be moving. Change could be a job.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Change can be a relationship. Change could be a mindset.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Change can be an ability to think out of the box.
- 43:20Speaker 1: The fourth set specific goals. You know you talk about
- 43:23Speaker 1: this all the time at the Russell Center setting goals,
- 43:26Speaker 1: and I hear that word all the time going out
- 43:28Speaker 1: on faith. I'm gonna tell you right up front, I
- 43:30Speaker 1: hate when people say that. I don't know how you
- 43:32Speaker 1: can be successful going out on faith if you don't
- 43:34Speaker 1: have a plan. And finally, be consistent, if you're not
- 43:38Speaker 1: consistent with who you meet, who you talk to, how
- 43:40Speaker 1: you always tell people if you If you have a
- 43:43Speaker 1: business and you ain't consistent on what time you open
- 43:45Speaker 1: the doors, you don't have a business. I started this show.
- 43:49Speaker 1: You know, my my company is like twenty miles away
- 43:52Speaker 1: from here. I close my shop up, all my employees
- 43:57Speaker 1: go I get my car getting traffic, I come here
- 43:59Speaker 1: on Tuesday. I'm trying to change your life. I'm trying
- 44:02Speaker 1: to change your life in a lot of different ways.
- 44:04Speaker 1: And when I bring a person like change Bailey on
- 44:07Speaker 1: to talk about centers that you may not know, like
- 44:09Speaker 1: you talked about the Urban League, you know, the Small
- 44:11Speaker 1: Business Administration, you know, all these these are locations where
- 44:14Speaker 1: you can go for mentorship, you know, talking to strangers.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Because that's a lot of things people need to understand.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Is that my life that I live right now wasn't
- 44:24Speaker 1: tired the people that I knew. It was tied to
- 44:27Speaker 1: people who saw something in me and made sure I
- 44:30Speaker 1: ascended to what I they thought I could possibly be.
- 44:34Speaker 1: So don't always expect it to be your pastor, or
- 44:36Speaker 1: your parents, or your wife, or your or your best
- 44:40Speaker 1: friend or your co workers. It could be strangers can
- 44:44Speaker 1: be your mentors. And that's why he mentioned the word
- 44:46Speaker 1: Urban League, That's what I'm saying, small Business Administration, That's
- 44:50Speaker 1: why I mentioned Russell Center. You're gonna walk into a
- 44:53Speaker 1: building filled with strangers, and that's the community that he's
- 44:57Speaker 1: talking about, that community that the Russell Center is creating
- 45:00Speaker 1: over there. It's right you can. There's a stone's throw
- 45:02Speaker 1: from HBCUs. That's what he's talking. That's why he keeps
- 45:05Speaker 1: mentioning HBC using. It's right down the street from Mercedes Binds.
- 45:08Speaker 1: If you make it right down MLK, you're gonna run
- 45:10Speaker 1: right into all those HBCUs, Marris Brown, Spellman, Clark, Atlanta University,
- 45:15Speaker 1: you're gonna run into all of them. More House. But
- 45:18Speaker 1: if you keep straight, you're gonna run right into the
- 45:21Speaker 1: Russell Center. And it's a family that made the decision
- 45:24Speaker 1: that what they got they want other people to at
- 45:27Speaker 1: least consider the possibility of achieving or having through entrepreneurship.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Tell us about that, Jay, and that's really why you know.
- 45:34Speaker 1: I wanted to tell your story, but I wanted to
- 45:36Speaker 1: close talking about the family that's enabling these changes to happen.
- 45:39Speaker 1: In this great Signif Atlanta your turn, it's a powerful
- 45:43Speaker 1: leg It's hard to talk about world without talking about them.
- 45:47Speaker 1: I mean, if you're black at Atlanta and do existence,
- 45:49Speaker 1: you have to think, permit sent Uh. He integrated the
- 45:53Speaker 1: Chamber of Commerce at the city and the state level
- 45:55Speaker 1: build half of our skyline. The brother had a pool
- 45:59Speaker 1: inside his house at thirty years old, where a young
- 46:02Speaker 1: dr King used to go swim and try to figure
- 46:04Speaker 1: out how he wanted to change the world. Um. And
- 46:07Speaker 1: even when we think about where the building is located, Uh,
- 46:12Speaker 1: he built that building there intentionally. When you talk about
- 46:14Speaker 1: those schools that are right across the street, we four
- 46:17Speaker 1: years ago, you couldn't go to the University of Georgia,
- 46:20Speaker 1: you couldn't go to Georgia Tech, you couldn't go to Emory.
- 46:23Speaker 1: So when our when our students used to matriculate from
- 46:25Speaker 1: all over the world to go to these schools, he
- 46:28Speaker 1: knew that they needed to see the physical manifestation of
- 46:31Speaker 1: what was possible for people that look like them. So
- 46:34Speaker 1: he built his headquarter building intentionally on a hill directly
- 46:38Speaker 1: across the street from all of those schools, to be
- 46:41Speaker 1: a beacon and to be an inspiration. And we hope
- 46:44Speaker 1: to be that continuously for what we're doing right now
- 46:47Speaker 1: for entrepreneurs a small business owner. So the Russell family,
- 46:51Speaker 1: even today after his death, h Russelling Company is the
- 46:55Speaker 1: largest black owned construction firm in the country. Their their
- 46:58Speaker 1: airport concession company, the Sensions International, is one of the
- 47:01Speaker 1: largest Semit countries. M a legacy that now has gone
- 47:05Speaker 1: into a third generation, and uh so it's a powerful legacy.
- 47:09Speaker 1: But again, when I say you become much, behold Sean.
- 47:13Speaker 1: We don't have enough examples of generational wealth to truly
- 47:18Speaker 1: aspire to, and the Russell family happens to be one
- 47:21Speaker 1: of those shining examples of black excellence and black wealth
- 47:25Speaker 1: and it stood the test of time and survived the generation.
- 47:30Speaker 1: You know, the interesting thing about I'm gonna use the
- 47:32Speaker 1: word frustration because of the fact that I know it's
- 47:35Speaker 1: a lot of people listening to this show as a
- 47:37Speaker 1: little I know, you encounter people on the regular people
- 47:39Speaker 1: regular basis, who want to who want to start their
- 47:42Speaker 1: own business, got this great idea, don't know what to
- 47:44Speaker 1: do with it. They hear the word entrepreneurship, but they
- 47:47Speaker 1: don't know what that means. They don't know what the
- 47:49Speaker 1: definition of what that means. And when I say that,
- 47:52Speaker 1: I say Russell's Center, I know some people they're gonna
- 47:55Speaker 1: ignore it, just like they ignore anything else in life
- 47:57Speaker 1: that that's not an option, that's something that Oh I
- 48:01Speaker 1: wish I the word I wish comes become a dominant
- 48:05Speaker 1: part of the conversation. How can we get more African
- 48:07Speaker 1: Americans involved? That I guess that's the question I want
- 48:10Speaker 1: to ask you, and guess what, I'm not expecting you
- 48:12Speaker 1: to answer it correctly. But I know you are a
- 48:16Speaker 1: deep thinker. I know you encounter these questions a lot
- 48:20Speaker 1: more than I do. And you and you see more
- 48:22Speaker 1: people frustrated, and you see more dreamers than I do
- 48:25Speaker 1: sometimes because I just go to work and I come
- 48:27Speaker 1: here on Tuesday and I interview people who who called
- 48:30Speaker 1: me so talk about that whole journey because they come
- 48:33Speaker 1: through your door, James, and they you can see that
- 48:36Speaker 1: brightness in their eyes, that energy and their face. How
- 48:39Speaker 1: do you build on that as an entrepreneur somebody who's
- 48:42Speaker 1: seeking that dream? I mean one you got to decide.
- 48:48Speaker 1: And this is the part that it is frustrated, brother,
- 48:50Speaker 1: because that's the part you can do nothing about. If
- 48:53Speaker 1: you're looking to go from good to great. Great takes
- 48:56Speaker 1: a certain amount of effort. Great takes a certain amount
- 49:00Speaker 1: of grit, a certain amount of commitment, a certain amount
- 49:03Speaker 1: of toughness. I love the tips that you gave before
- 49:06Speaker 1: the break. It has a certain level of humility to
- 49:08Speaker 1: attached to it. And you've literally just gotta make decision.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Do I want to be average or good? Or do
- 49:14Speaker 1: I want to be great. And if you want to
- 49:17Speaker 1: be great, seeking out those organizations, those strangers that you
- 49:21Speaker 1: talked about, those mentors, those people, those places that you
- 49:25Speaker 1: need to be in that will fortify your greatness. Uh,
- 49:29Speaker 1: that will sustain that self esteem, that will improve that
- 49:32Speaker 1: self confidence. Uh, and that will show you the way
- 49:36Speaker 1: I mean. And and so for me, I have grown
- 49:39Speaker 1: to the point then let us focus on those that
- 49:43Speaker 1: want to be great, because I think the more of
- 49:46Speaker 1: those that we focus on, rather than taking some of
- 49:48Speaker 1: our energy for those that are just content with being good.
- 49:52Speaker 1: If I get enough for Sean McDonald's out there, I
- 49:55Speaker 1: know that I got a better chance of inspiring the
- 49:58Speaker 1: next Rasan McDonald from being good. Degree. And so, you know,
- 50:03Speaker 1: focusing a lot of those energies on the people that
- 50:05Speaker 1: are saying I'm ready, let's go, and hoping that the
- 50:09Speaker 1: energy that we create with that that small nucleus permeates
- 50:14Speaker 1: into the community inspires others to make that leap. No, James,
- 50:18Speaker 1: you know, we've we've seen how Mr George Floyd incident,
- 50:22Speaker 1: how this America has that's changed. My wife and I
- 50:26Speaker 1: we we we look at television and we see diversity
- 50:29Speaker 1: casting in these movies and streaming. And we know four
- 50:33Speaker 1: or five years ago that was a white person, not
- 50:35Speaker 1: a black person. I know that for a fact five
- 50:38Speaker 1: years ago that there was rather tear down cheerios because
- 50:41Speaker 1: the little white kid woke up the black dad. Okay.
- 50:44Speaker 1: So I know changes are happening, and changes have to happen.
- 50:48Speaker 1: And what I've noticed is how the corporate As an entrepreneur,
- 50:51Speaker 1: you know, you have the diversity suppliers at these major
- 50:53Speaker 1: corporations now and there's a shift now and then you
- 50:57Speaker 1: hear the terminology diversity, equity and lusion. Uh d e.
- 51:01Speaker 1: I how can we see these changes? And you've been
- 51:05Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, how can we guide young people or people
- 51:08Speaker 1: in the for these people in their sixties, because there
- 51:10Speaker 1: you can be sixty years old. You can still start
- 51:13Speaker 1: your own business. Don't think you can. Sixties the new forty, okay,
- 51:17Speaker 1: and so let's make it work. So how do how
- 51:19Speaker 1: can we take advantage these shifts? James? And as we
- 51:23Speaker 1: close out this this this great interview with you and
- 51:25Speaker 1: advise people to contact you over to Russell Center for
- 51:28Speaker 1: more advice, more mentorship. You know, make the mistakes we
- 51:33Speaker 1: were in the moment, and I don't know how long
- 51:36Speaker 1: it's gonna last. There was this great awakening, uh, this
- 51:40Speaker 1: great you know understanding, and this great of course to
- 51:45Speaker 1: be more diverse, to be conclusive. But we can bank
- 51:49Speaker 1: on that last thing forever. Our real goal right now
- 51:52Speaker 1: is how do we take this moment and make a
- 51:54Speaker 1: true movement. How do we grow the businesses that can
- 51:57Speaker 1: hire our own people. We don't need the initiatives because
- 52:01Speaker 1: we have a company for the people in our company,
- 52:03Speaker 1: I mean people people from our community. I just think
- 52:07Speaker 1: that we have this window in time for those of
- 52:11Speaker 1: us that have the ability to go, for all those
- 52:14Speaker 1: of us that have the ability to actually capitalize on
- 52:16Speaker 1: opportunities to build relationships, to build structures and infrastructures, to
- 52:21Speaker 1: build companies that can hire our people. We need to
- 52:25Speaker 1: buckle up because there is no guaranteed that this level
- 52:28Speaker 1: of consciousness is gonna last for the next decade. And
- 52:32Speaker 1: so if there was ever an urgency for for black thinkers,
- 52:37Speaker 1: black innovators, and black ideas, black business people, black dreamers
- 52:42Speaker 1: to put that dream to work is right now. Because
- 52:46Speaker 1: if we start freting our own infrastruction on companies, on platforms,
- 52:51Speaker 1: our own manufacturers at that point, but then we don't
- 52:55Speaker 1: need another George Florida. Wow, I'm tell m Aimes, Uh,
- 53:00Speaker 1: you were the perfect first guest of the year. You know,
- 53:03Speaker 1: we're gonna make this an annual thing. You're gonna always
- 53:05Speaker 1: be my first guest of the year because of the
- 53:09Speaker 1: fact that you know so you know it's really you know,
- 53:11Speaker 1: we were met and we have not reconnected, but the
- 53:15Speaker 1: life gives you these different paths, and now we're reconnecting
- 53:18Speaker 1: in the format. I feel it's gonna help thousands, especially
- 53:21Speaker 1: thousands in the city of Atlanta, and I want to
- 53:23Speaker 1: continue to drive people over to the Russell Center. But
- 53:26Speaker 1: more important, I want to tell everybody mentorship is where
- 53:29Speaker 1: you find it. You don't have to be anybody. You know,
- 53:32Speaker 1: it can be a stranger who recognizes that you have
- 53:34Speaker 1: a gift and a sense of purpose to change somebody
- 53:36Speaker 1: else's life. Keep doing that, James, thank you for coming
- 53:39Speaker 1: on money. Make a conversation. Brother, brother, I am you
- 53:43Speaker 1: keep that's what you are. And uh, thank you. We
- 53:49Speaker 1: talked to and tell out everybody at Russell I'm coming by. Man,
- 53:52Speaker 1: We're gonna eat and then gonna go over. I'm gonna eat.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I even across streeting and THENNA walk on over. Hey,
- 53:58Speaker 1: next time you have passed, I got your brother. Okay,
- 54:01Speaker 1: I appreciate you man, God bless you man. Happy New
- 54:04Speaker 1: Year again. This is how the show is. This is
- 54:06Speaker 1: your show. Don't disappoint me and I participate in this
- 54:10Speaker 1: season of giving. Coals has gifts for all your loved ones.
- 54:13Speaker 1: For those who like to keep it cozy, find fleeces, sweaters, loungeware,
- 54:17Speaker 1: blankets and throws, or support minority owned or founded brands
- 54:21Speaker 1: by giving gifts from human Nation and shame moisture, and
- 54:25Speaker 1: in the spirit of giving, Coals Cares is donating eight
- 54:28Speaker 1: million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide. Give with all your
- 54:32Speaker 1: heart this season with great gifts from Coals or coals
