Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest. There are sisters. I always talk about
- 0:03Speaker 1: gifts and leading with your gifts and purpose where they
- 0:06Speaker 1: leave with their gifts and they don't let their friends
- 0:08Speaker 1: family because they are family occur work to stop them
- 0:11Speaker 1: from planning or living their dreams, because they're planning and
- 0:13Speaker 1: living their dream together. My next guests are Christian songwriter
- 0:17Speaker 1: singer and songwriter Billboard number one chart topping in two
- 0:20Speaker 1: times Stellar Award nominee KeAndre Lockett and her Atlanta based
- 0:25Speaker 1: celebrity fashion stylish sister, Kim Lockett, are the founders of
- 0:28Speaker 1: a luxury Essential Were brand that recently launched and target
- 0:32Speaker 1: stores nationwide. That's right, nationwide, not in Georgia, not in region, nationwide.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The premium brand name means pretty Black in French was
- 0:43Speaker 1: created in twent and eighteen to celebrate black diversity and
- 0:46Speaker 1: inclusion while offering stylish, high fashion Essential Were for both
- 0:50Speaker 1: women and men. Women and men. That means I am
- 0:53Speaker 1: styling my stuff too. It's wearable, size includes extra small
- 0:57Speaker 1: and size Excel collection includes tops, bottoms, matching sets and accessories. Customs.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Design in the House by the Dynamic Duo. Please work
- 1:06Speaker 1: with the money making conversation real life sisters and entrepreneurs.
- 1:10Speaker 1: KeAndre and Kim like it? How are you doing? Don't
- 1:15Speaker 1: do me like that? Don't y'all do me like that? Hi,
- 1:18Speaker 1: because I gotta figure out who I'm talking to Kei Andrew,
- 1:20Speaker 1: let me hear that voice. Oh, Kim can give me
- 1:26Speaker 1: another voie. Don't do me like I just because y'allre
- 1:29Speaker 1: supposed to be a studio with me. Y'all was supposed
- 1:31Speaker 1: to be a studio. So now I gotta figure out
- 1:33Speaker 1: who I'm talking to the audio and that is always
- 1:37Speaker 1: a fund campaign for me. But welcome. First of all,
- 1:40Speaker 1: you know I did not want to mess up the
- 1:42Speaker 1: name of your brand, So please, Kei Andra, please tell
- 1:46Speaker 1: me the name of your brand. Okay, Jolie, you are
- 1:53Speaker 1: Jolie new are okay? Cut So so, Kim, where did
- 1:57Speaker 1: that name come from? Uh? Keanda and I we are
- 2:00Speaker 1: from Louisiana. And okay, what part of Louisiana. Now, let's
- 2:04Speaker 1: just do throw Louisiana like it's because the North is
- 2:07Speaker 1: different from the South. Because my parents are born from
- 2:10Speaker 1: the north, Maiana from the north to yes, that's my
- 2:15Speaker 1: parents are from. Our parents were born and raised the Streeport. Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I know it's different, yes, absolutely so, um yeah, so
- 2:28Speaker 1: because we are from Louisiana, we want to pull from
- 2:30Speaker 1: the French culture of Louisiana, UM, just a little part
- 2:33Speaker 1: of us. We wanted a name that meant something to us,
- 2:36Speaker 1: um and that could carry and that could be marketable
- 2:40Speaker 1: as well. And so we rested on Joey Law because
- 2:43Speaker 1: so many black women, UM do not have a space
- 2:46Speaker 1: to let our hair down, if you will. Because we
- 2:48Speaker 1: initially designed for black women, um, and then we uh
- 2:52Speaker 1: here recently last year created a space in our closet,
- 2:55Speaker 1: hypothetical closet for men. So that is how men became
- 2:59Speaker 1: a heart because also pretty black. We know that, um,
- 3:03Speaker 1: not only black women fight with image insecurity, but black
- 3:08Speaker 1: men as well. We've learned that along our journey. So yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: we are doing this. They say for the culture. Well,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, it's so important because like as a man,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know, because I'm known for wearing suits and ties
- 3:21Speaker 1: and being suited in Buddhists, people see me in blue
- 3:23Speaker 1: jeans and casually all like almost faint shot. So so
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's important that because that that, you know, I know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the dress comfortable. I got my my little Jordan's shoes
- 3:36Speaker 1: that match because I match though, I'm a matching person.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Now when i'm castual, I match up. You know everything.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I'm very neat and so so so when you went
- 3:45Speaker 1: to to to the because I got the factor on
- 3:47Speaker 1: the female side, understanding that that need that where But
- 3:51Speaker 1: on the male side, what was your research and launching
- 3:54Speaker 1: a mail line? So we actually um hold some of
- 4:00Speaker 1: our closest male friends and they were like, yeah, I
- 4:03Speaker 1: would totally wear this. I would wear you know, something
- 4:06Speaker 1: with a woman on it. Um. And we also already
- 4:08Speaker 1: had some huge male followings who was already supporting the brand.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So we set to look at pieces that were moving
- 4:15Speaker 1: by men, and that is how we created our section
- 4:19Speaker 1: of our website to the unifex um what was already
- 4:23Speaker 1: appealing to men. Right, So, Kim, you all these celebrity
- 4:27Speaker 1: fashion styless. Okay, you got the celebrity singer over there.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You know she's she coming into your lane? Now, she
- 4:32Speaker 1: coming over here with I Did you know you weren't
- 4:35Speaker 1: over there? You were over there trying to sing back
- 4:37Speaker 1: up in her group. You know what I'm saying. You
- 4:39Speaker 1: know you know what I'm saying. You know, I'm just
- 4:41Speaker 1: telling the truth. There she coming over here, So how
- 4:44Speaker 1: did you feel sharing that space with your equally talented sister,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but she was talented in another lane. Yeah, I wouldn't
- 4:53Speaker 1: actually have it any other way. You know, it's their
- 4:56Speaker 1: power numbers. We both believe that. And uh with the design,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know, that's all. There's always someone to bounce ideas
- 5:04Speaker 1: off of and also to get ideas from. So we
- 5:08Speaker 1: both gleaned from each other um with it. So it
- 5:11Speaker 1: just only flowed naturally for us. Well that that's really
- 5:16Speaker 1: key because when I went out, like I said, when
- 5:19Speaker 1: you when you have a brand, it all starts with
- 5:21Speaker 1: an idea. Now, Kiandra, you you know when you started
- 5:25Speaker 1: your singing career as a team, you started with a group.
- 5:27Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, you started with a group and
- 5:29Speaker 1: then so and then you became a solo artist. Just
- 5:33Speaker 1: just understanding now you're working in conjunction with your sister.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I know that's totally different. But just talk to my
- 5:39Speaker 1: listeners and tell them that, how how that how that
- 5:42Speaker 1: has helped this relationship here, being able to share thoughts,
- 5:46Speaker 1: working as a team with a focus goal based on
- 5:49Speaker 1: your relationship with your singing group that you're when you
- 5:53Speaker 1: started your career, Can you talk about that. Yeah, well, um,
- 5:57Speaker 1: actually um, building and growing the group. Um, of course
- 6:02Speaker 1: that would you know, kind of help. Um, you know
- 6:05Speaker 1: its it relates to understanding people and knowing how to
- 6:08Speaker 1: work with people. But of course being the main Kim
- 6:10Speaker 1: have you know, been sisters all of our lives, it's
- 6:14Speaker 1: kind of easy to you know, work with her. Um
- 6:17Speaker 1: still even if there wasn't um like the start with
- 6:22Speaker 1: the group, you know, and so um she's also worked
- 6:26Speaker 1: with me with the group for several years. She stowed
- 6:30Speaker 1: the group and then um uh did she did some
- 6:35Speaker 1: background singing for I hated by Ford, Yes, she did it,
- 6:45Speaker 1: uh huh. But so it's it's pretty easy working, you
- 6:49Speaker 1: know with her. I'm used to working with her. Um. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I just I think it's you know, because we're sisters too.
- 6:56Speaker 1: So well being sisters, Kim, you know that all you
- 7:00Speaker 1: ever wanted support. I come from a large family, successors,
- 7:03Speaker 1: two brothers. Sometimes that was too much support, you know,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and also not as much food. Okay, when you wanted
- 7:08Speaker 1: to go back to seconds, it was always what you
- 7:10Speaker 1: thought should be left left. But I know that, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 1: the the ability to share success with families always special,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and the fact that you guys are now sharing success
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know under that lock of brand. Talk to us
- 7:28Speaker 1: about that. Yeah, So it just goes back to us
- 7:33Speaker 1: being you know, this is actually who we are. I
- 7:36Speaker 1: guess you could say our parents, our dad Weather was
- 7:38Speaker 1: in the military, moved around a lot, um, and so
- 7:42Speaker 1: it's just been keiander and so to sharing our successes.
- 7:45Speaker 1: We've shared in everything else, So why not sharing our successes.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And we've always you know, kind of championed each other
- 7:52Speaker 1: on and cheered each other on, um, in each of
- 7:55Speaker 1: our individual endeavor. So um to share that. Once I
- 7:59Speaker 1: had a teacher, um, because I got my master's degree
- 8:02Speaker 1: here in Atlanta. That's what actually brought up here. I UM,
- 8:06Speaker 1: one of my teachers said, don't share the same passion
- 8:09Speaker 1: as one of your siblings because it would never work
- 8:11Speaker 1: because we'll eachealous of the other. But um, one thing
- 8:15Speaker 1: that I was like when he said that, I was like, well,
- 8:19Speaker 1: that's not really true, because my sister and I have
- 8:21Speaker 1: always overlapped in each other's in lanes, if you will.
- 8:25Speaker 1: We've always given input to each other's processes, and um,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you know, we've always been a part of each other's
- 8:32Speaker 1: process is almost to the point that we it's almost
- 8:35Speaker 1: impossible to imagine us without without each other. Um, almost
- 8:39Speaker 1: like we're twins. UM. So I you know, could not
- 8:43Speaker 1: get grasp that, you know, that did not process what
- 8:46Speaker 1: was me and said what was me? So yeah, the
- 8:49Speaker 1: successes that we have had, UM, we share them almost equally.
- 8:55Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting. You know, I've always people
- 8:59Speaker 1: have told me what I could do and could not do,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and always when they told me what I could do
- 9:04Speaker 1: was always lesser than what I thought I could do.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Or I remember when I was throughting out early in
- 9:08Speaker 1: my career, I was doing stand up comedy on the
- 9:10Speaker 1: regular basis, and I remember I walked off stage and
- 9:14Speaker 1: it's a co called comedy workshop, white club owners, white audience,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and I was to a standing ovation and this guy
- 9:20Speaker 1: and the owner went, you know something, if you could
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know, you got a little accent with Sean. If
- 9:24Speaker 1: you just clean up that accent, you could be a
- 9:26Speaker 1: lot funnier. I go, but they substanding ovation. You know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: so people can stereotype you with statements and then they
- 9:33Speaker 1: could question whether or not you have the ability to achieve.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And so when they when the teacher said that that
- 9:40Speaker 1: could have been an asset peel in your relationship because
- 9:43Speaker 1: you could have questioned the desire to have that relationship,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but love and a clear understanding of who you two
- 9:50Speaker 1: are superseded that madness. And I think faith pays a
- 9:53Speaker 1: major role in that. Correct. Yeah. Yeah, we were raised
- 9:59Speaker 1: to be faith based and um we carry and we've
- 10:02Speaker 1: carried that on into our adult lives. We can't do
- 10:05Speaker 1: anything without the Lord. Actually, JOLIANOI would not be without
- 10:09Speaker 1: the Lord. Praise the Lord. Come on, we're gonna take
- 10:15Speaker 1: some phone calls. Are We're gonna be praising all the
- 10:17Speaker 1: way for another half hour. Got them ladies, gym, I
- 10:20Speaker 1: got the locket system ship one kind of can saint.
- 10:23Speaker 1: She did background. She won't confess. Lord, we know consing.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I don't know who I'm talking to. I just say
- 10:30Speaker 1: their name. They respond to them. That way, we win.
- 10:36Speaker 1: We're gonna take this sharp break me back with the fantastic.
- 10:38Speaker 1: They closed the target, everybody target. We're gonna make it happen.
- 10:42Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 10:45Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations
- 10:51Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. I love positive energy. I love
- 10:56Speaker 1: people who understand that this show is about uplift. This
- 11:00Speaker 1: about motivating people to be successful, allowing them to tell
- 11:03Speaker 1: their story in a in a manner where they feel
- 11:06Speaker 1: comfortable and they feel is relatable. But the information that
- 11:08Speaker 1: they delivered to the listeners also, I hope inspires them.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I hope and inspires and encourages them. When I say that,
- 11:14Speaker 1: Kim Roid, and I say that to you, Kim, the
- 11:16Speaker 1: inspiration we're trying to get out of this interview to
- 11:18Speaker 1: everyday people is what what message I'm gonn start with you? Kim?
- 11:22Speaker 1: What what? What's the overall message would you want people
- 11:24Speaker 1: to take from you when they hear us discuss the
- 11:27Speaker 1: success of your brand, the success of your career so far. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 1: so that black people can succeed in persevere through anything,
- 11:37Speaker 1: as we all know that. But we are two girls. UM,
- 11:40Speaker 1: so we went to college like we have not. We
- 11:44Speaker 1: have entrepreneur experience in the past, but this is not
- 11:47Speaker 1: our path. We didn't go to school for business. Um.
- 11:49Speaker 1: We actually have very different career paths for our personal careers.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But yeah, you can actually succeed in as black women. Um,
- 11:59Speaker 1: you definitely can be all odds. You don't have to
- 12:02Speaker 1: consider the odds. Um, even as you are going through life,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you just continue to work in your own lanes and
- 12:09Speaker 1: continue to move forward and with the Lord. That's the
- 12:13Speaker 1: speciation that we always have to come from. You can
- 12:16Speaker 1: do anything the Bible best that we can achieve all
- 12:18Speaker 1: things to Qrice. So um, that's absolutely truth. Yeah. Um,
- 12:24Speaker 1: Actually I'm gonna go back to the whole faith conversation. Um.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I think that a lot of times, as especially millennial
- 12:34Speaker 1: entrepreneurs or just millennial UH based people, we always figure
- 12:40Speaker 1: that you know, we we do the work like you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I hit up and we have this whole thing like
- 12:46Speaker 1: you know, the hostel culture. Um, we we think we
- 12:49Speaker 1: get up in the morning and you know we we
- 12:53Speaker 1: say are a little mantra or a little affirmations and
- 12:57Speaker 1: life is gonna be, you know what it needs to be.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Our career or all of that will be what it
- 13:01Speaker 1: needs to be. But it is really God's timing his season,
- 13:06Speaker 1: his hand on your life and your career. If that
- 13:09Speaker 1: we couldn't have manifested is if you will as best
- 13:14Speaker 1: as He planned this for us. And so um, I've
- 13:18Speaker 1: always felt this anxiety, Um, you know, like I'm not
- 13:23Speaker 1: in the place and I'm supposed to be in or
- 13:25Speaker 1: I'm not doing exactly what it is that I planned
- 13:28Speaker 1: or what I see my other peers doing. And the
- 13:31Speaker 1: whole time, the Lord has been like, that's not for you.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And the timing, if their season, their place, that's not
- 13:37Speaker 1: for you. But if if you live to be let's
- 13:41Speaker 1: say fifty five, and you do, you start doing and
- 13:45Speaker 1: building and creating at a fifty that is the time
- 13:49Speaker 1: that I designed for you, And that's the destiny and
- 13:52Speaker 1: and and the season that will be fulfilled for you.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That's what I created for you, and that's what you're
- 13:57Speaker 1: going to do. You can't create it yourself as that
- 14:00Speaker 1: as God can. Jesus was on on this earth for
- 14:03Speaker 1: thirty three years and didn't start his ministry until a
- 14:06Speaker 1: couple of years before his death, you know. And so
- 14:09Speaker 1: it's the same thing with us. You can't. You can't
- 14:12Speaker 1: create and and make a life best for yourself better
- 14:16Speaker 1: than God. Can. You know? That's what I want people
- 14:19Speaker 1: to walk away with. Well, I understand that. I believe that,
- 14:23Speaker 1: and I take that blessing because of the fact that
- 14:25Speaker 1: you know, you know, I'm not a person that acknowledges
- 14:29Speaker 1: my face publicly all the time. In fact, it took
- 14:31Speaker 1: me a while to even accept the responsibility of of
- 14:35Speaker 1: who I am and why why do I exist? What? What? What?
- 14:38Speaker 1: What binds me to success? You know, it's it. You
- 14:41Speaker 1: know it's the right place at the right time. I'm
- 14:43Speaker 1: I'm lucky. It's my faith. It gets me up. The
- 14:47Speaker 1: alarm clock doesn't get me up. What what? What motivates
- 14:51Speaker 1: me to be successful when it motivates me to encourage
- 14:53Speaker 1: the blessings that I have received on to other people?
- 14:56Speaker 1: What drives me to come here every Tuesday to speak
- 15:00Speaker 1: to individuals on a live radio show when I could
- 15:03Speaker 1: just play a radio just play a recorded version of
- 15:06Speaker 1: my show because I want to make a difference and
- 15:07Speaker 1: I want to I want to change lives. And when
- 15:09Speaker 1: I listen to what you just said, what Kim just said,
- 15:12Speaker 1: I love it because we have two individuals who are
- 15:15Speaker 1: driven by the same passion to be successful, but they
- 15:18Speaker 1: speak and talking uniquely different. But they come together as
- 15:21Speaker 1: a team under faith, guided by mission. That YouTube can
- 15:27Speaker 1: be them. YouTube can have a product and talk. Okay,
- 15:30Speaker 1: not only a product can target, but the product can
- 15:33Speaker 1: target that sales that you know, come a go say
- 15:37Speaker 1: that one more time, Ladies say see you see the
- 15:42Speaker 1: beauty of that. We've got a call it to him,
- 15:43Speaker 1: Gonna go to the call in the minute. Because the
- 15:45Speaker 1: beauty of you Andre, you know, you have that energy
- 15:49Speaker 1: of you know, hearing your song on the radio. I
- 15:51Speaker 1: know you when you first heard Oh my god that okay. Now,
- 15:56Speaker 1: So tell me Kim and Candre, when you walked into
- 16:00Speaker 1: Target and saw your product, tell us their reaction. You know,
- 16:05Speaker 1: it was like nothing that I've ever experienced, because this
- 16:09Speaker 1: is Kim. So as you mentioned, Kiandra has had that
- 16:11Speaker 1: experience of having a project, her baby, you know, consumed
- 16:16Speaker 1: by the masses. But I, Um, I was so nervous
- 16:20Speaker 1: leading up to January because I was like, Lord, I
- 16:24Speaker 1: don't know if they're going to love these designs as
- 16:27Speaker 1: much as the people who already support us love them.
- 16:30Speaker 1: You know, this is closing up to so many more
- 16:33Speaker 1: people in opinions and you know, things like that. So
- 16:36Speaker 1: it's like, oh my goodness, it's go time, you know.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And so um when I walked into Target that because
- 16:44Speaker 1: first of all, we had to go to several targets
- 16:46Speaker 1: because the news filed out of control in a really
- 16:49Speaker 1: good way, but to the point that we could not
- 16:53Speaker 1: find um within the Atlanta area like with it, like
- 16:56Speaker 1: we went to like five stores looking for the product. UM.
- 17:00Speaker 1: We in some most stories we probably saw two or
- 17:03Speaker 1: three pieces and what I was looking for with the
- 17:05Speaker 1: entire collection at one time at least one piece of
- 17:10Speaker 1: UH just to see how it looks. That was an
- 17:14Speaker 1: overwhelming and exciting feeling because those people grabbed that stuff
- 17:19Speaker 1: off of the shelves and actually one of the pieces
- 17:21Speaker 1: because we gave them um our best sellers UM and
- 17:26Speaker 1: then we revamped them for them, so like some of
- 17:29Speaker 1: the colors are different and things like that. But our
- 17:33Speaker 1: no icon t shirts we hadn't even tested on our
- 17:36Speaker 1: own website to the event was good or not and
- 17:39Speaker 1: people loved it. So that was like so rewarding, UM,
- 17:44Speaker 1: more rewarding than graduating. Like, well the people are calling it,
- 17:58Speaker 1: let me get One of my first call was in
- 18:00Speaker 1: corn Alta based in Atlanta. How you doing, Coaita, Hi Rishan,
- 18:05Speaker 1: how are you dealing great? Great? You know I have
- 18:08Speaker 1: the wonderful kill and Drink Kim on the call here.
- 18:11Speaker 1: What is your question? Thank you for calling the Money
- 18:13Speaker 1: Making Conversation master class. What is your question to them?
- 18:17Speaker 1: So I'm very UM, I feel blessed. I hurt your
- 18:21Speaker 1: testimony in a sense. And it's funny you should say
- 18:25Speaker 1: even if you're fifty five, because I'm fifty five and
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know, other things were not for you, that whatever
- 18:32Speaker 1: your path is now, this is for you. And I
- 18:36Speaker 1: just appreciate that so much because so many times I've
- 18:39Speaker 1: worked for other people and other things and you know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: always feeling like, oh, I'm too old to starry overall,
- 18:46Speaker 1: too old to do this and to that do that.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And I just appreciate that so much. For are you
- 18:51Speaker 1: saying that? With that being said, does somebody or did
- 18:56Speaker 1: you have a mentor you know to help you along
- 18:58Speaker 1: the pathway of this, because say you didn't go to
- 19:00Speaker 1: school for this. Did someone you know help you along
- 19:05Speaker 1: to kind of guide you into the retail business? Um? Actually,
- 19:10Speaker 1: we did a lot of research. Um our mom UH
- 19:15Speaker 1: is basically like a business money head, if if you will.
- 19:20Speaker 1: She's very intelligent and very good with money. So we
- 19:23Speaker 1: had that UH component or element as well. And then
- 19:27Speaker 1: we also had um a business coach for about the
- 19:31Speaker 1: first h first year, yeah, first year of our our
- 19:36Speaker 1: existence as Joel Maui. So I think that with those things, UM,
- 19:42Speaker 1: this is the reason why we are here and showing
- 19:45Speaker 1: up every day, um, even when people were not there.
- 19:50Speaker 1: You know. It's at times it almost brings me to
- 19:53Speaker 1: tears still because it's amazing how we are here at
- 19:56Speaker 1: this moment. But back then it was like, Lord, when
- 20:00Speaker 1: is this home take off? But at times we were
- 20:03Speaker 1: on social media selling to ourselves, you know, put in
- 20:09Speaker 1: cashes and pages out there to uh two people, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: you know they weren't They weren't there because it was
- 20:15Speaker 1: only like maybe a hundreds and sucking people who were um,
- 20:19Speaker 1: you know, even following us. So uh, it takes a
- 20:23Speaker 1: bit of everything, um, to be able to be successful
- 20:27Speaker 1: in whatever it is, you know, career path that you've chosen.
- 20:31Speaker 1: But um, it'll eventually work out. Yeah. And Kiander and
- 20:35Speaker 1: I also we owned a business prior to Jolie Lam
- 20:38Speaker 1: called the Right Glass and Sisters, So we learned everything
- 20:41Speaker 1: not to do from from glass just stop something. Hey. Yeah,
- 20:45Speaker 1: So it does take taking that risk, um, And I
- 20:49Speaker 1: do you know, I do suggest that you at least
- 20:52Speaker 1: find a friend group of business owners if you can't
- 20:55Speaker 1: afford a mentor, because I know some mentors charge. Um
- 20:59Speaker 1: what we all selves surround ourselves, we have other friends
- 21:01Speaker 1: who have businesses. And then of course KeAndre and I
- 21:05Speaker 1: me being a wardrobe silence, that's to business. Keandre's music
- 21:08Speaker 1: is another business. So UM, you know, so we've had
- 21:12Speaker 1: working knowledge of how to structure a little bit, although
- 21:16Speaker 1: clothing is a little different than the other businesses that
- 21:19Speaker 1: have UM. But yeah, so it is about researching UM
- 21:24Speaker 1: a lot. It's a lot of reading. Even now we
- 21:27Speaker 1: still do a lot of reading. Did you have to
- 21:29Speaker 1: say aggressive like what's new UM and whatever industry you're in.
- 21:33Speaker 1: But the biggest piece of advice is to just get started.
- 21:36Speaker 1: If it doesn't work, you're not You're not a failure.
- 21:39Speaker 1: It just means that that wasn't the thing or the
- 21:41Speaker 1: time for that thing. Thank you, Thank you for calling
- 21:44Speaker 1: in on the show. You're fantastic with that question. I
- 21:46Speaker 1: appreciate you. You know. You know, I think I'm just
- 21:51Speaker 1: They just took over my show right there. You know
- 21:53Speaker 1: that they became a master class. I know. I just
- 21:57Speaker 1: love people, so I can't I can't find there's two
- 21:59Speaker 1: of them. There's two of them. I cannot I can't
- 22:03Speaker 1: even hands. I don't know, you know, next time, next
- 22:07Speaker 1: time it would be I just want to do I
- 22:10Speaker 1: may have one in studio so I can see you
- 22:13Speaker 1: and the other on the phone because I know I
- 22:16Speaker 1: don't count Kim. I know I cannot have on both
- 22:19Speaker 1: of y'all just do the same time. No, no, no,
- 22:22Speaker 1: But before we go to break, uh, I want to talk.
- 22:25Speaker 1: When y'all saw y'all did y'all did y'all did y'all
- 22:28Speaker 1: immediately post the social media? Did y'all do a little
- 22:31Speaker 1: fashion walk in Target? What did y'all do? Actually? Um?
- 22:37Speaker 1: When we what did we do? But yeah, before we
- 22:41Speaker 1: went into Target, we saw a picture that was tweeted
- 22:45Speaker 1: UM by someone and they tagged UM, they tagged me
- 22:50Speaker 1: and they were like, oh mg, I can't believe. I
- 22:52Speaker 1: believe I've seen my girl key under locket and stars.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And I was like, oh gosh. So Kilmen was like,
- 22:58Speaker 1: we've got to make this announcement before the rest of
- 23:00Speaker 1: the you know, the world, is it, because anybody else
- 23:03Speaker 1: can make an We'll be right back with more Money
- 23:09Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to
- 23:16Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Now, Ryan in Memphis,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I know you've been waiting patiently. Thank you for holding
- 23:25Speaker 1: on what is your question? Yes, sir, thank you for
- 23:29Speaker 1: having me on. I enjoy your show from play six
- 23:33Speaker 1: year olds from Memphis. I'm very intrigued by the entrepreneurship
- 23:38Speaker 1: that comes on this show every week and uh, trying
- 23:41Speaker 1: to apply one thing I learned every week to my life,
- 23:44Speaker 1: flight can get that one percent better. On My question
- 23:46Speaker 1: would be at what part of the business and owning
- 23:50Speaker 1: your own business is it okay too allow your family
- 23:55Speaker 1: to help your business grow and when is it not
- 23:59Speaker 1: okay when you're in certain stages of the building process
- 24:03Speaker 1: to tell your family, Hey, I'm not at the point
- 24:06Speaker 1: where I need you yet. Just hold on my safe. Um.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You know that that is a good question. But I
- 24:13Speaker 1: think that it is something that is based on your
- 24:16Speaker 1: own goals that you have. UM, you can do it
- 24:20Speaker 1: as early as startup doing um crowdfunding like getting people
- 24:24Speaker 1: to so basically into your business to help you to
- 24:28Speaker 1: get your business off the ground. KeAndre and I actually
- 24:31Speaker 1: we were funded by our mother, so she gave us
- 24:34Speaker 1: our startup money. She's also and she's also a partner
- 24:38Speaker 1: of our so this is totally a family business. But
- 24:42Speaker 1: it's up to you to define the lines and you
- 24:45Speaker 1: know the boundaries of how those people who do help
- 24:48Speaker 1: your business. It's up to you to define how that
- 24:51Speaker 1: works and what part they'll play. Um, is this the donation,
- 24:55Speaker 1: is it a partnership? You know, things like that, and
- 24:58Speaker 1: you can do it, like I said, its earlier, start
- 25:00Speaker 1: up in the middle. If you're needing more funding, excuse me,
- 25:04Speaker 1: things like that. But it just depends on how involved
- 25:07Speaker 1: you want them. I would say, to make sure that
- 25:09Speaker 1: it is someone that, of course, that you can trust
- 25:11Speaker 1: in your family, because unfortunately, not all family members can
- 25:14Speaker 1: be trusted. But someone that you can trust and someone
- 25:17Speaker 1: who understands paperwork is there to keep seeing, you know, balanced,
- 25:23Speaker 1: to keep things on the up and up, because not
- 25:26Speaker 1: everybody understands that because you know, of course, once you
- 25:28Speaker 1: start growing people, you know, things change sometimes for people
- 25:33Speaker 1: in their minds. Um. And that paperwork always keeps you
- 25:37Speaker 1: so honest and um accountable. Ryan, did day ask your
- 25:42Speaker 1: question and answered it and and then some and I
- 25:46Speaker 1: know you're gonna get the rest of it. I appreciate it. Well, Ryan,
- 25:49Speaker 1: keep listening. And when I come to Memphis, man, we
- 25:51Speaker 1: gotta share each of that chicken, Man, because Memphis and
- 25:53Speaker 1: fried chicken and go hand in hand. Okay, hey man,
- 25:57Speaker 1: I got someone right now. Thank you for I appreciate you.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Sonya got Sonya on the line. How are you doing? Signya?
- 26:04Speaker 1: Hey Rashan, how are you doing? I'm doing fantastic. I'm
- 26:08Speaker 1: on the show, not by myself, KeAndre and Kimp. They're
- 26:11Speaker 1: only here talking about their fantastic clothing line that's in
- 26:13Speaker 1: taj or Target. As it is professionally stated Tarja is
- 26:17Speaker 1: when you know, I think with your boys and your girls,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I just three, I'm going down to you know, so
- 26:24Speaker 1: what you have? What question do you have to say? Sonya?
- 26:27Speaker 1: As I was as I was listening, and you guys
- 26:30Speaker 1: said that you know it's perfect time and reason season,
- 26:33Speaker 1: you know, and and how to you know went to
- 26:36Speaker 1: go and went to you know, safetyp or pullback? How
- 26:39Speaker 1: did you all know that was time to even put
- 26:41Speaker 1: your brand in Target? Like? What what was that? Great question?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Do you you know? What? How how do how do
- 26:47Speaker 1: I you know, I started the business too, and I'm like,
- 26:50Speaker 1: how do I figure out when is the right time
- 26:53Speaker 1: to move in that way or not? You know? Yeah?
- 26:58Speaker 1: So actually we have this answer will be twofold because
- 27:01Speaker 1: for KeAndre and I for Jolie noir. Target approached us
- 27:04Speaker 1: for Black History Months um last year for a partnership,
- 27:08Speaker 1: so it's a limited partnership that was for Black History Months,
- 27:11Speaker 1: so that was obviously controlled by Target and them. Can
- 27:16Speaker 1: you know contacting us? But um, as far as knowing
- 27:20Speaker 1: when you're ready, I would say, once you have continual
- 27:25Speaker 1: sales on your own platform, then that is a good
- 27:28Speaker 1: key and good sign to know that you're ready to
- 27:32Speaker 1: start pitching your brand or your ideas to other larger
- 27:35Speaker 1: brands to partner with, because of course they want to
- 27:38Speaker 1: see can you make them money? That is the name
- 27:42Speaker 1: of the game. So if you can make yourself money,
- 27:45Speaker 1: if you garner yourself a following, then they will be
- 27:48Speaker 1: more apt to partner with. You answer your question, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 1: awesome now And I know Kid was so calm with that.
- 27:59Speaker 1: You know, I get contacted us, you know, they called us.
- 28:03Speaker 1: You know, I'm on with the fleet market. I'm out
- 28:05Speaker 1: with the fleet market trying to say Chicken pop Pye
- 28:07Speaker 1: sandwiches and talking contacted us. You know, you know, let's
- 28:13Speaker 1: be on the real first. You know, we but that.
- 28:16Speaker 1: But that's the blessing of all these relationships is that
- 28:19Speaker 1: you don't know and uh, and and the follow up
- 28:22Speaker 1: on Ryan's question family, see family, See I love what
- 28:25Speaker 1: you were talking about their family mom gave money, putting
- 28:28Speaker 1: it in writing contract. Let them know the responsibility. I'm
- 28:31Speaker 1: giving you this, but guess what what am I gonna get?
- 28:34Speaker 1: That's business? See family, You gotta make sure it's always
- 28:38Speaker 1: about business because sometimes family. Can I borrow some money? Okay?
- 28:42Speaker 1: Can you go to the bank and ask that question? Okay,
- 28:47Speaker 1: can you go to your job and ask that question. No,
- 28:50Speaker 1: when you're coming to me, we're gonna have the same rules. Family,
- 28:54Speaker 1: the same rule. And that's where family get twisted. They
- 28:57Speaker 1: throw that oh you know, you know you're gonna play
- 28:59Speaker 1: me like that. Statements like that are not used on
- 29:02Speaker 1: any legal document. Play me like that that. It's not
- 29:05Speaker 1: written in any legal document I ever had in my life.
- 29:08Speaker 1: So you have to avoid those family terms. You know, love,
- 29:13Speaker 1: love is no document, don't you know. I've never signed
- 29:16Speaker 1: a legal contract that had love in it like that.
- 29:18Speaker 1: You know, so understand that the relationship have to be
- 29:22Speaker 1: bound by contractual thoughts. Bringing that lawyer, I'm telling you,
- 29:26Speaker 1: the worst deal you can do is I think that's right.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I think that looks just that look good. To you
- 29:32Speaker 1: that they look good to you. Uh, and you sign
- 29:34Speaker 1: it and it's not good. It didn't look good at all.
- 29:36Speaker 1: You should have had a lawyer to tell you because
- 29:38Speaker 1: a calma an and an or can make the difference
- 29:43Speaker 1: between whether you have a good contract or you have
- 29:46Speaker 1: a bad contract. That's how easy it can be. And
- 29:49Speaker 1: I just tell you, Kim and Candre. I remember when
- 29:52Speaker 1: I started my comedy club with my sister family. My
- 29:55Speaker 1: family loved me and I love them too. And you know,
- 29:59Speaker 1: and when I started in a hotel. You know, we
- 30:02Speaker 1: started a hotel and I was called the Hip Hop
- 30:05Speaker 1: Comedy Stop, and they were working for free. They were
- 30:08Speaker 1: working for free. You know, Oh, we just want to
- 30:10Speaker 1: see you be successful. We just want to see you
- 30:12Speaker 1: be successful. As soon as I started making just a
- 30:15Speaker 1: live money, suddenly it was talking about what where I
- 30:18Speaker 1: was there. I thought you were helping to brother. I
- 30:20Speaker 1: thought you because I just see what I should have
- 30:23Speaker 1: done up front was put it in my budget what
- 30:26Speaker 1: they supposed to have gotten paid. That way, I wouldn't
- 30:29Speaker 1: have been blindside. They did all the right thing. They
- 30:31Speaker 1: had a right to ask me for money. But because
- 30:34Speaker 1: I was going out there family, that's what he was
- 30:37Speaker 1: asking when do you bring family? And whenever you bring
- 30:40Speaker 1: family and do what they did, put it in writing
- 30:43Speaker 1: and understand there's a responsible role you have to pay
- 30:47Speaker 1: play when you're dealing with money. And my night and
- 30:50Speaker 1: my correct, ladies as correct. Thank you. One thing I
- 30:56Speaker 1: wanted to say before we leave, and I want to
- 30:57Speaker 1: congratulate you. This interview was fantastic. Takeetting you know sometimes
- 31:01Speaker 1: you know, I got a bet yesterday, I gotta be
- 31:03Speaker 1: three o'clock today. I got up at four thirty and
- 31:06Speaker 1: it's a long day for me. And when I come
- 31:08Speaker 1: to the show, it's always like a passion and a
- 31:11Speaker 1: moment of faith about why I do this and when
- 31:14Speaker 1: I when I when I get to this point, I go, wow,
- 31:16Speaker 1: this is why I do it. You fantastic, y'all. Both
- 31:19Speaker 1: are just a joy and a blessing. And it's called
- 31:23Speaker 1: through people calling it. You're changing people's lives, not longer
- 31:26Speaker 1: with your clothes, but also with your sensibility. Is your tone,
- 31:30Speaker 1: your your motivation? But how does the design process? I
- 31:34Speaker 1: think there's one question I want to get out before
- 31:36Speaker 1: we wrap up. How does the design process work really
- 31:40Speaker 1: when it comes to men, really and when it comes
- 31:42Speaker 1: to women, as we wrap up the show. Yeah, so
- 31:46Speaker 1: we look at colors. We first start with blackness, if
- 31:50Speaker 1: you will. So things that will look good on dark
- 31:52Speaker 1: brown or light or brown, whatever color, whatever shade looked
- 31:56Speaker 1: at almost colored people. UM, And so we start they're
- 32:00Speaker 1: looking at colors, and then we kind of look at
- 32:02Speaker 1: what appeals to our customer base and what's going on
- 32:06Speaker 1: out in the rest of the world for a fashion.
- 32:09Speaker 1: So we combine all of those elements together. Keiander and I.
- 32:13Speaker 1: We glean from nature, UM, artwork, UM, all kinds of
- 32:18Speaker 1: things to create UM. And we just get inspired by
- 32:22Speaker 1: so many different things. UM, by a phrase and like
- 32:26Speaker 1: a trigger word might trigger a phrase or something like
- 32:30Speaker 1: that for us, UM, you know, something that's pointing back
- 32:32Speaker 1: to Jolenoir or something like that, just depends on what
- 32:35Speaker 1: the phrase is UM. And then that is how we
- 32:39Speaker 1: get our designs, each one of our individual designs. But
- 32:42Speaker 1: that's usually how the process works. Keiander and I. For
- 32:45Speaker 1: our illustrations, we do not draw them ourselves, but we
- 32:50Speaker 1: do sellect all the hair, the eyes, the nails, everything
- 32:55Speaker 1: that you see. Time. I mean, Kim, you leave your
- 33:00Speaker 1: sister no time, you know time I gotta go with
- 33:03Speaker 1: four seconds left. I love y'all both, but then she
- 33:06Speaker 1: talked too much. You talked too much. I see y'all
- 33:09Speaker 1: next week, or want to make the conversation. Mounts of
- 33:11Speaker 1: plass the locket sisters. We talked too much of what
- 33:14Speaker 1: you saying. That's all I can say.
