- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Happy Friday, everyone. It is May 16th.
- 0:182025. In doubt it is. And here in Sacramento,
- 0:21it's just lovely. Sunny, high of 87 degrees expected.
- 0:25Perfect Friday weather. Absolutely. And the markets,
- 0:28they finished the week pretty strong. Dow closed
- 0:30at 423 .67 .23. S &P 500 at 59 .26 .3. Good way
- 0:36to end the week. Definitely. And, you know, it
- 0:39is Friday. Casual Friday. Maybe time to break
- 0:41out the slightly more adventurous socks. Gotta
- 0:44embrace the small freedoms. Exactly. Well, welcome,
- 0:48everyone, to Connecting the Dons. I'm Alex. And
- 0:49I'm Morgan. We're from Snarfle Solutions Group.
- 0:51And today, we're doing a deep dive into three
- 0:54pretty significant tech stories that have been
- 0:56making headlines. We want to unpack them a bit
- 0:58and see what they actually mean for, well, for
- 1:00you. Yeah, we've got YouTube jumping into the
- 1:02podcast chart game, a potentially massive merger
- 1:06in the cable world. the latest twist in that
- 1:09ongoing Apple versus Epic Games saga. OK, let's
- 1:12start with YouTube. So they've just rolled out
- 1:15a weekly top podcast chart specifically for the
- 1:17US. It updates every Wednesday. Right. And this
- 1:20comes, you know, not long after Spotify also
- 1:23announced some new public metrics for podcasts.
- 1:26Seems like measurement is becoming a big focus.
- 1:28It really does. But YouTube's approach here is.
- 1:31Well, it's interesting. Their chart ranks the
- 1:33top 100 shows, but it's based on total watch
- 1:36time. Exactly. Not just clicks or initial views,
- 1:39but how long people are actually sticking around
- 1:41and watching. That's a key distinction. It really
- 1:44could be. I mean, prioritizing watch time, that
- 1:47naturally gives a boost to longer shows or at
- 1:49least shows that. really hold your attention
- 1:52right precisely it might encourage creators to
- 1:55focus less on say quick hits and more on that
- 1:58deeper engagement and their rules to To even
- 2:01be eligible, the content has to be specifically
- 2:04marked as a podcast when it's uploaded. Yeah,
- 2:07so just putting up clips or shorts, that won't
- 2:09count towards this chart. They're clearly carving
- 2:11out podcasts as a specific thing. Which makes
- 2:14sense, given the numbers. YouTube apparently
- 2:16has over a billion monthly active podcast viewers.
- 2:19That's huge. And Edison Research actually says
- 2:21YouTube is the most used podcast service in the
- 2:24US right now. Wow. Okay, so this chart could
- 2:27become pretty influential pretty fast. You think
- 2:30so. The first one just came out covering May
- 2:325th to 11th. Any surprises at the top? Well,
- 2:35maybe not a huge surprise at number one, the
- 2:37Joe Rogan experience. Okay, yeah, that's it.
- 2:39But others in the top group include Kill Tony,
- 2:42Rotten Mango, 48 Hours, the Midas Dutch Podcast.
- 2:46So, quite a mix. Hmm, yeah. Comedy, true crime,
- 2:51news. It shows the variety people are consuming
- 2:54on the platform. And YouTube already does this
- 2:56kind of thing for music, right? Videos, songs,
- 2:58artists. Exactly, so they're kind of applying
- 3:00a model they know, and they've said they plan
- 3:03to roll these podcast charts out in other countries
- 3:05eventually, add more features. It's definitely
- 3:07a different feel than Spotify's new Plays feature.
- 3:11That one seems more like trying to match YouTube's
- 3:14traditional view count idea. Right, so you have
- 3:16YouTube saying, how long are they watching, and
- 3:19Spotify may be focusing more on how many started
- 3:21watching. It's two different ways to measure
- 3:24popularity. Which does bring up the concerns
- 3:26some smaller podcasters have, doesn't it? that
- 3:29focusing so much on charts turns it into just
- 3:32a popularity contest. It's a valid concern. Will
- 3:35this make it harder for niche or up -and -coming
- 3:37shows to get discovered if all the focus is on
- 3:39the top 100 based on watch time? Possibly. So
- 3:43thinking about you, the listener, how does this
- 3:46help? Well, I guess it could be a pretty straightforward
- 3:48way to see what's trending, right? Find new shows
- 3:50based purely on what lots of other people are
- 3:52watching for extended periods. Yeah, it's another
- 3:54discovery tool. And for creators, I mean, that
- 3:57watch time data is gold. It tells you what's
- 3:59actually keeping people hooked. Advertisers,
- 4:02too, I imagine. They'll love having clearer metrics
- 4:04on reach and engagement. Oh, absolutely. This
- 4:07gives them more data to work with when deciding
- 4:09where to spend their ad dollars. OK, let's shift
- 4:11gears. Story number two is a big one. We're talking
- 4:14about a potential merger between Charter Communications
- 4:17and Cox Communications. Yeah, this is huge. Two
- 4:20absolute giants in the US cable industry, possibly
- 4:23joining forces. The deal values Cox at around
- 4:26$34 .5 billion, and that includes their debt.
- 4:30Wow. So if this goes through, the combined company
- 4:33would actually be bigger than Comcast, in terms
- 4:36of cable customers. That's the projection, yeah.
- 4:38It would create a real behemoth. It definitely
- 4:41signals that consolidation is still very much
- 4:43the name of the game in telecom. Interesting
- 4:46detail. The combined company will actually keep
- 4:50the Cox name, legally speaking. Right. But the
- 4:53services you buy, the brand you'll see, will
- 4:56be Spectrum within about a year. Ah, okay. So...
- 4:59Spectrum branding continues. And Cox Enterprises,
- 5:03the parent company of Cox Communications, they
- 5:06end up as the biggest shareholder. Yep, with
- 5:08about a 23 % stake. So they maintain significant
- 5:11influence. And this isn't the first time they've
- 5:12talked about this, apparently. No, apparently
- 5:14they had discussions maybe 12 years ago or so.
- 5:18And John Malone, who's a major charter shareholder
- 5:20and a big name in telecom. Right. He's mentioned
- 5:24Cox as a potential partner before, so the idea's
- 5:27been floating around. This is definitely up there
- 5:29with the biggest deals announced this year. I
- 5:30think Google buying Whiz is another one in that
- 5:32league. For sure. And the motivation seems pretty
- 5:34clear. Cost savings. They're projecting about
- 5:37$500 million a year in savings after a few years.
- 5:41Just efficiencies. Yeah, things like getting
- 5:43better deals when buying equipment, streamlining
- 5:46overhead, that kind of thing. Standard merger
- 5:48synergy stuff. And the plan is to offer the whole
- 5:51bundle under spectrum, right? Fiber, internet,
- 5:53mobile phone, streaming. Exactly. Compete across
- 5:56the board. They need that scale and diverse offering
- 5:59to compete with, you know, fiber providers, wireless
- 6:02companies, streaming services. The whole landscape
- 6:05is changing. What about leadership? Who's running
- 6:08the show? Alex Taylor who runs Cox Enterprises
- 6:10now. He'll be the chairman of the board of the
- 6:12new company, but Chris Winfrey Charter's current
- 6:15CEO He gets the president and CEO job of the
- 6:18combined entity Okay, and they'll oversee a massive
- 6:21workforce over a hundred thousand employees.
- 6:24Yeah, it's a huge operation The core argument
- 6:26they're making is that joining forces makes them
- 6:28stronger more competitive better able to invest
- 6:31and adapt and Cox Enterprises gets quite a package
- 6:34for their cable business. What was it cash stock?
- 6:38It's a mix. About $4 billion in cash, $6 billion
- 6:42in these convertible preferred units, and almost
- 6:45$12 billion in common units of the new company.
- 6:48Plus, the new company takes on $12 billion of
- 6:51Cox debt. So it's complex. And Charter's also
- 6:55setting up a new foundation. Yeah, a Cox Communications
- 6:57Foundation with a $50 million endowment plus
- 7:00an employee relief fund. Sort of a nod to the
- 7:03Cox legacy, perhaps. But this isn't a done deal
- 7:05yet. Far from it. Not at all. It needs shareholder
- 7:08approval, and crucially, it needs regulatory
- 7:10approval. That process could easily take a year,
- 7:13maybe longer. Regulators will definitely scrutinize
- 7:16a merger of this scale. So what does this mean
- 7:18for you, the consumer, if you're a Charter or
- 7:20Cox customer now? Well, immediately, probably
- 7:23not much. These things take time. Longer term,
- 7:25though, you'll likely see the Spectrum brand
- 7:27become universal if you're a Cox customer now.
- 7:30There could be changes to bundles, service options,
- 7:33potentially. Mergers can sometimes lead to price
- 7:36adjustments down the road as companies integrate
- 7:38and look for those savings. But it's too early
- 7:41to say for sure. The main takeaway is It's just
- 7:44another big example of how the cable and internet
- 7:46industry is shrinking down to fewer, larger players.
- 7:51Okay, on to our third story. And it's back to
- 7:53that never -ending battle. Apple versus Epic
- 7:58Games over Fortnite. Yeah, just when you think
- 8:01there might be some movement, things seem to
- 8:03take another turn. Epic is now claiming Apple
- 8:06has blocked their latest attempt to get Fortnite
- 8:08back into the US App Store. Blocked it. even
- 8:11after that court ruling about allowing external
- 8:13payments. Apparently so. Epic's statement is
- 8:16pretty strong. They're saying Fortnite on iOS
- 8:18is effectively offline worldwide until Apple
- 8:21unblocks it. Wow. Worldwide. So this isn't just
- 8:24a US thing anymore. It seems to be impacting
- 8:26things globally now, according to Epic. Remember,
- 8:28Fortnite got kicked off the App Store back in
- 8:292020. Right, for putting in their own payment
- 8:31system to bypass Apple's cut. Google did the
- 8:34same thing on the Play Store. Exactly. But recently
- 8:36there was that legal win for Epic where a judge
- 8:38basically said Apple had to allow developers
- 8:40to link to outside payment options in the U .S.
- 8:43Yeah, I remember that. The judge even found Apple
- 8:45in willful violation of a court order, right?
- 8:48And mentioned potential criminal contempt. That's
- 8:51right. So things seem to be maybe leaning Epic's
- 8:54way at least slightly in the U .S. context. So
- 8:57Epic tried to resubmit Fortnite. They did. First
- 9:00on May 9th. Heard nothing for a week. Then they
- 9:02submitted again on May 14th with updated game
- 9:04content. Because, you know, Fortnite needs weekly
- 9:07updates across all platforms simultaneously.
- 9:09Okay. And Apple's response? According to Epic,
- 9:12Apple blocked that May 14th submission. And crucially,
- 9:16Epic also says Apple is preventing the release
- 9:18of Fortnite even in the EU, where it was available
- 9:21through the Epic Games Store on iOS. Wait. How
- 9:24could they block in the EU? Wasn't that allowed
- 9:26because of the Digital Markets Act? That's what
- 9:28makes this latest move particularly aggressive,
- 9:31if Epic's account is accurate. The DMA forced
- 9:34Apple to allow third -party app stores in the
- 9:37EU, which is how Fortnite returned there. Now
- 9:40Epic says Apple is somehow stopping that too.
- 9:42Kim Sweeney, Epic's CEO, he posted about this,
- 9:45didn't he? Yeah, he posted on X basically confirming
- 9:47Apple blocked the submission and the game is
- 9:50offline worldwide on iOS because of it. This
- 9:53feels like a major escalation. Even with court
- 9:55rulings, Apple seems determined to hold its ground.
- 9:58It appears so. Apple did introduce that system
- 10:01where apps using external payments still owe
- 10:03them a 27 % commission. Right, which developers
- 10:06weren't thrilled about. No. And Apple also put
- 10:08up warnings about security risks for users going
- 10:11outside the App Store payment system, so they've
- 10:13been pushing back. But blocking it outright again,
- 10:16especially potentially impacting the EU release,
- 10:18that's a strong statement. So for you, the listener,
- 10:21if you play Fortnite on your iPhone or iPad,
- 10:24What now? Well, right now, according to Epic,
- 10:27you can't access the game. Simple as that. It's
- 10:29offline on iOS. Man, this whole fight just keeps
- 10:33going. And it really highlights the power these
- 10:37platform holders like Apple have over developers,
- 10:39doesn't it? Absolutely. It impacts developer
- 10:41business models, how they reach users, and ultimately
- 10:44it affects your choice and potentially what you
- 10:47pay for apps and in -app content. OK, so let's
- 10:49just quickly recap the three big things we dove
- 10:51into today. We had YouTube launching its new
- 10:54podcast charts based on watch time in the US.
- 10:57Then the massive proposed merger between Charter
- 11:00and Cox, potentially creating the largest US
- 11:02cable provider under the Spectrum brand. And
- 11:05finally, the latest chapter in Apple versus Epic,
- 11:08with Fortnite apparently blocked and offline
- 11:10worldwide on iOS devices again. Three stories,
- 11:13all touching on pretty key themes. how we measure
- 11:15online content, consolidation in major industries,
- 11:19and the ongoing power struggles in the app economy.
- 11:21Yeah, they seem separate, but they connect through
- 11:23these broader trends shaping our digital lives.
- 11:26So maybe something to think about as we rack
- 11:29up. With things like these podcast charts gaining
- 11:32prominence and the cable industry consolidating
- 11:35further, how do you see your own media habits
- 11:37changing maybe in the next few years? And that
- 11:40ongoing fight between developers like Epic and
- 11:43platform giants like Apple, what do you think
- 11:46that means for the future of your favorite apps,
- 11:49for innovation, for choice? Lots to mull over
- 11:52there. These shifts are happening constantly.
- 11:54They really are. It's a space that's always evolving.
