- 1:01Speaker 3: I want to give to everybody. And that's what money
- 1:03Speaker 3: Making Conversation master Class. It used to be called just
- 1:05Speaker 3: money Making Conversation. Then when I realized what I was
- 1:08Speaker 3: doing and I was mentoring people and providing information, I
- 1:11Speaker 3: added masterclass to it. So let's get this roll in
- 1:14Speaker 3: with my first instructor of the of this hour. My
- 1:19Speaker 3: guess is a passion It's very passionate about bringing people together.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Kimberly's dedication to fostering community led her to create the
- 1:26Speaker 3: HBCU Social mobile app. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation
- 1:31Speaker 3: master Class, Kimberler Kissinger. How are you doing, Kimberly?
- 1:34Speaker 4: I am great, I am fantastic. How are you pretty good?
- 1:38Speaker 1: HBCU we talk about HBU.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Giv me your HBCU background so we can get all
- 1:42Speaker 3: this all this out with hbc you one hundred percent.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Okay, let's go on.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I am the proud graduate of the illustrious Clark and
- 1:52Speaker 4: Lanta University Class of nineteen ninety five Bachelors of Mass
- 1:57Speaker 4: Media Arts, Radio, TV Films. So that is my HBCU history.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Well, why did you go to an hbc what did
- 2:05Speaker 3: you have other options? And you just said this the school.
- 2:07Speaker 4: I wanted to attend YEP, great question. So throughout my
- 2:11Speaker 4: entire elementary school, middle school, and high school, I went
- 2:14Speaker 4: to predominantly white colleges and high school and school, and
- 2:17Speaker 4: so I wanted to go to a college where everybody
- 2:21Speaker 4: looked like me. So I can't completely give that complete credit.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I also have to give credit to school days as
- 2:27Speaker 4: well as different world. And then my sister she went
- 2:29Speaker 4: to Hampton University, so I was able to go visit
- 2:31Speaker 4: her at Hampton. So from there I was like, oh,
- 2:33Speaker 4: I have to go to the hbc.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well know when we're talking about social but before we
- 2:41Speaker 3: get there, when you think about HBCUs, of course, you
- 2:44Speaker 3: always think about halftime, the bands, the marching bands, and
- 2:48Speaker 3: we think about sports, especially football and right and then,
- 2:52Speaker 3: but we tend to forget about the academics. I think
- 2:55Speaker 3: when you're talking about what is an HBCU, we go
- 2:59Speaker 3: to the marching bands, to the halftime show. Some type
- 3:02Speaker 3: of people call it the fifth quarter of a football game.
- 3:04Speaker 3: It's called a halftime show. I remember when ESPN when
- 3:07Speaker 3: they started airing the HBCU games on ESPN platform, they
- 3:13Speaker 3: weren't showing the halftime. They would go to halftime highlights
- 3:16Speaker 3: and it was such a complaint that they now have
- 3:19Speaker 3: to show the halftime on another channel because there's so
- 3:22Speaker 3: many complaints for not seeing the halftime show at HBCU games,
- 3:26Speaker 3: And that's how powerful these halftime show performances are with
- 3:30Speaker 3: these marching bands. Do you feel we do enough job
- 3:34Speaker 3: promoting the academics of HBCUs.
- 3:38Speaker 5: No.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I think there's always room for improvement. I think yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean that's part of the mystique of going to
- 3:42Speaker 4: an HBC school. It's the homecoming games, the halftime shows,
- 3:47Speaker 4: and that's always the entertainment portion of it all. But
- 3:49Speaker 4: I think yes, I think we can do a better
- 3:52Speaker 4: job of letting the world know that we're not just
- 3:55Speaker 4: a party school. It's not party time. We're also about
- 3:58Speaker 4: our books. We have to remember that HBCUs have the
- 4:01Speaker 4: historically played a crucial role in providing access to higher
- 4:05Speaker 4: education for African American students. I mean, particularly during the
- 4:08Speaker 4: time when you have segregation and discrimination barred us from
- 4:12Speaker 4: attending the predominant white institution. So today attending the HBC
- 4:16Speaker 4: is very vital and crucial to our students because they're
- 4:19Speaker 4: on these underrepresented backgrounds to pursue higher education. I mean,
- 4:24Speaker 4: you have some great programs and social work, STEM programs,
- 4:28Speaker 4: you know, even in entertainment, mathematics, history, math, media, arts
- 4:33Speaker 4: to radio, TV, film, and so there's a lot of
- 4:36Speaker 4: great opportunities at HBC schools. And then in some of
- 4:39Speaker 4: these institutions you have graduate programs, and so we can't
- 4:43Speaker 4: we can't forget about that. So I think, yeah, I
- 4:45Speaker 4: think we could do a better job of making sure
- 4:47Speaker 4: that we talk about those areas as well.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Well.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Kivira Leman heavy out with numbers, some facts. Okay, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 3: the black teachers come from Hbcusvent Dennis and medical doctors
- 5:02Speaker 3: come from HBCUs who are black. Forty percent of the
- 5:05Speaker 3: members of Congress who are black come from HBCUs. The
- 5:11Speaker 3: STEM graduates who are black come from HBCUs. These are
- 5:16Speaker 3: numbers that you know, the legal profession, same thing, dominant
- 5:20Speaker 3: amount of blacks who in that area come from HBCUs.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And so but if you don't tell that story, then
- 5:28Speaker 3: the predominant white institution, I guess, can take credit because
- 5:31Speaker 3: nobody knows right.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Exactly exactly, You're absolutely right, and those numbers like, yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 4: that's that's great data, but who else knows about that?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah, the reason I bringing that up because recently the
- 5:43Speaker 3: richest man in the world, Elon Musk, you know, was
- 5:46Speaker 3: talking about co signing a claim that black students who
- 5:50Speaker 3: attend HBCUs have low IQs, and I was all started
- 5:54Speaker 3: about that. Not United Airlines started this pilot program and
- 5:58Speaker 3: they had chose three HBCUs and they start looking at
- 6:01Speaker 3: SAT scores and they started people tend.
- 6:04Speaker 1: To tie hbc used to IQ's.
- 6:06Speaker 3: It's just a test because I my SAT score was
- 6:10Speaker 3: so bad it was ridiculous. I only got into college
- 6:12Speaker 3: because I had good academic training. I won't even reveal
- 6:15Speaker 3: that score on this radio show. That's how bad it was. Okay,
- 6:18Speaker 3: so please don't tell me that you know sad scores
- 6:21Speaker 3: mean you're really smart and that I'm living proof the
- 6:24Speaker 3: smartness drifted past that test score when it came to
- 6:27Speaker 3: ra Sean mcnonal. Okay, now, But but people use these
- 6:31Speaker 3: test scores and use this propaganda, especial in social media,
- 6:35Speaker 3: to bar opportunities of people who may be considering hbc US.
- 6:40Speaker 1: That's all.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm just talking about fighting that negative, that the mantra
- 6:44Speaker 3: that can be out there that's being politicized, and that's
- 6:47Speaker 3: really the backbone of what you're doing with this app?
- 6:50Speaker 1: Correct?
- 6:52Speaker 4: Yes, exactly correct?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Background and inspiration why.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So it really all came from having a conversation. That's
- 7:01Speaker 4: why you don't underestimate the power for conversation, right, and
- 7:04Speaker 4: ouration with a college one of my best friends from
- 7:08Speaker 4: college and her daughter was attending an hbc school and
- 7:11Speaker 4: she was complaining about the lack of dating options at
- 7:14Speaker 4: her school. And you know, she and I were talking.
- 7:17Speaker 4: We're like, you know, what wouldn't it be? I was like,
- 7:19Speaker 4: wouldn't it be amazing if we had like some type
- 7:21Speaker 4: of an app where students can connect with other students
- 7:24Speaker 4: at other university HBCU colleges and universities, not just for
- 7:28Speaker 4: dating purposes, but also for networking, for sharing their work
- 7:33Speaker 4: if they're working on a project, but not just for students,
- 7:35Speaker 4: but also for alums. And there's nothing out there like that.
- 7:38Speaker 4: But more important, we also hear that from some of
- 7:41Speaker 4: these corporations, Oh, we can't seem to find a talent
- 7:44Speaker 4: or we don't know where to look for them. You know.
- 7:46Speaker 4: So now it's like, okay, this could also be a
- 7:48Speaker 4: conduit for job listings, internships, and events, so we can
- 7:51Speaker 4: tackle behole HBCU community so that's where the idea came from,
- 7:56Speaker 4: is that you know, there isn't out anything out there
- 7:59Speaker 4: like that. Yeah, how we have Facebook, Yeah we have Instagram,
- 8:02Speaker 4: we have Twitter. So essentially those could be my competitors.
- 8:06Speaker 4: But at the same time, it's not really tailored to
- 8:09Speaker 4: just the HBCU community. This is for us by us
- 8:13Speaker 4: stealing Fulu's line. But that's basically what it is now, Kener, this.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Is money making conversations that you called inn on. Okay, Now,
- 8:22Speaker 3: HBCUs that's a community. Then you have predominant white institutions.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Now it seems to me in a money making conversation
- 8:35Speaker 3: that it can be expansive if you decided to just
- 8:38Speaker 3: go universal. So why did you strictly focus on the
- 8:41Speaker 3: HBCU conversation. I'm talking from a money making conversation.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Money making standpoint. Listen, I hear you. I think that. Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 4: I when I pitched this idea to certain investors and
- 8:53Speaker 4: different people, it was brought to my tension, even from
- 8:56Speaker 4: a black person, right right, right, great idea. I think
- 9:01Speaker 4: it can make a lot of money, but I feel
- 9:02Speaker 4: like you can make more money if you expand it
- 9:05Speaker 4: to the white community. And my question was which is
- 9:08Speaker 4: why I tell people, you know, don't give up on
- 9:11Speaker 4: your passion and your dream and what you know within
- 9:13Speaker 4: your heart to do. And yeah, I could have done that,
- 9:16Speaker 4: but I'm not just in this for the money. But
- 9:18Speaker 4: just like I can make money opening up to predominant whites,
- 9:21Speaker 4: I can also make money within our own community. We
- 9:24Speaker 4: keep forgetting we can tap into our own community. But again,
- 9:27Speaker 4: what is your motivation. My motivation was not necessarily to
- 9:30Speaker 4: just make money. My motivation was to bring the community
- 9:33Speaker 4: together to give opportunity for networking experiences across all the
- 9:37Speaker 4: ABCU schools as well as all the different alum as
- 9:40Speaker 4: well as corporations. Now won't have excuses they can't tap
- 9:44Speaker 4: into our network because now there's going to be a
- 9:46Speaker 4: conduit for them to tap into. And yeah, if I
- 9:48Speaker 4: can make some money off of that, at the same time,
- 9:50Speaker 4: of course I want to do that, but that's not
- 9:52Speaker 4: my sole motivation. So no, I don't want to open
- 9:55Speaker 4: up to them because they already have it. Facebook, Instagram,
- 9:58Speaker 4: all of those were made by white men. This is
- 10:00Speaker 4: something that was designed by an African American woman who
- 10:03Speaker 4: attended an AHBCU school, and this is for us by us,
- 10:07Speaker 4: as I said earlier.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Cool, I'm talking to Kimberly Kissinger. She's built out and
- 10:13Speaker 3: HBCU's social mobile app. Let me ask you this. So
- 10:16Speaker 3: this is technology. You know, apps are huge. I noticed
- 10:20Speaker 3: that my podcast, ninety five percent of the people use
- 10:24Speaker 3: them cell phone. Nobody goes to the desktop to listen
- 10:27Speaker 3: to my podcast. That's generally that's why such a younger
- 10:31Speaker 3: group of people use the mobile apps, because everybody's really
- 10:36Speaker 3: living their lives through their cell phones. So are you
- 10:39Speaker 3: talking in the parents? Are you trying to reach the parents?
- 10:43Speaker 3: Are usually trying to reach the young people. What's your audience?
- 10:46Speaker 4: So the audience is the entire ahpC community. So that's
- 10:49Speaker 4: the lums, that's that's undergrads, that's Divine nine members, that's
- 10:54Speaker 4: ABCU supporters like yourself. It's basically our entire community. When
- 10:59Speaker 4: you get down into internships or events or jobs listings
- 11:03Speaker 4: and things of that nature, they may be specific to
- 11:05Speaker 4: like internships are for the undergrads. You want to go ahead,
- 11:08Speaker 4: and there could be different types of events that are
- 11:10Speaker 4: gonna be tailored to the collegiate community. So anything that
- 11:14Speaker 4: affects us, that's what's gonna be in the app. So
- 11:16Speaker 4: it's for everyone. We didn't just want to just make
- 11:18Speaker 4: it to the for the young folks. Because here's the
- 11:20Speaker 4: thing now again, we also this is money making conversation.
- 11:23Speaker 4: So of course I designed the app, so total motivation
- 11:27Speaker 4: was not money, but I do want to make some
- 11:29Speaker 4: money off of it. Young people they're gonna pay, but
- 11:32Speaker 4: maybe they won't. But we know that older people are
- 11:35Speaker 4: gonna have no problem paying. Right. Usually young folks may
- 11:38Speaker 4: have the ass commission, Hey can I pay a dollar?
- 11:41Speaker 4: So you know, I'm not saying they won't do it
- 11:43Speaker 4: because they pay for everything else. But you got to
- 11:45Speaker 4: open it up a little bit wider within that, within
- 11:47Speaker 4: that field of people so that you can make money,
- 11:51Speaker 4: so that you continue building out the app and making
- 11:53Speaker 4: it better.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Really, it's really about can we break down because when
- 11:58Speaker 3: you sit around thinking about the things that you're trying
- 12:00Speaker 3: to do with the app, because, like you said, originally
- 12:02Speaker 3: thought the dating side, no parents gonna pay for a
- 12:04Speaker 3: dating app for their Well, now you know the academic opportunities,
- 12:09Speaker 3: the job opportunities, then turn opportunities, internship opportunities. Parents will
- 12:15Speaker 3: look at that because that's all we're trying to do,
- 12:16Speaker 3: you know, all I try to do for my daughter
- 12:18Speaker 3: was giving her a leg up. And I feel when
- 12:20Speaker 3: you when the whole creation of this is that there
- 12:23Speaker 3: are bills to be paid. Let's got nobody can just
- 12:26Speaker 3: dumb an app. Okay, you can say what you want.
- 12:28Speaker 3: You know, they say social media is free, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 3: but then they still want you to boost ads and
- 12:34Speaker 3: boost posts, you know, to you know, to further your
- 12:38Speaker 3: reach within our world, you know. So they are They're
- 12:41Speaker 3: always gimmicks, and I shouldn't call them gimmicks. Is marketing strategy.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You can either come online here and I'm gonna let
- 12:49Speaker 3: you sign up for free, but if you really want
- 12:51Speaker 3: to reach people, go cost five dollars, maybe fifty dollars
- 12:54Speaker 3: and one hundred dollars if depends on how many people
- 12:56Speaker 3: you're trying to reach.
- 12:57Speaker 1: So everybody has a strategy.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Your strategy up front is that it allows you to
- 13:01Speaker 3: come on and and and meet these these relationships, whether
- 13:05Speaker 3: there are job opportunities or to internship opportunities. How did
- 13:09Speaker 3: you how did you find the internship or the job
- 13:12Speaker 3: opportunity that you are making available on your app?
- 13:15Speaker 4: Yeah, good question. So right now, everyone, it's a one
- 13:19Speaker 4: woman show over here at HBC Social.
- 13:24Speaker 1: You need Miam. You need myam Kimber, I am you.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I care And so the app just got dropped in October. Okay,
- 13:30Speaker 4: this is the labor of love for two years. And
- 13:33Speaker 4: as you mentioned earlier, you know after expensive and basically
- 13:37Speaker 4: I put in a lot of my sweat and tears
- 13:39Speaker 4: and my own money equity equity, and also had the
- 13:43Speaker 4: benefit and just the blessing of having someone who really
- 13:47Speaker 4: believed in me and gave me a lot of the
- 13:49Speaker 4: money to actually fund the app, might you know, get
- 13:51Speaker 4: the app done myself because I'm not a techie, so
- 13:53Speaker 4: I had to hire app development company to help build.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I came up with the concept and the idea, but
- 13:59Speaker 4: I don't know how to code and so, and I
- 14:02Speaker 4: wanted the app done to be the right way. So
- 14:03Speaker 4: going back to your question about where do I find
- 14:06Speaker 4: the job listens and internships and events. One, I'm very
- 14:09Speaker 4: well connected with different people in various industries. I also
- 14:12Speaker 4: get I have friends who helped me out send me
- 14:14Speaker 4: information from LinkedIn. I'm very active on social media, so
- 14:17Speaker 4: some of the different sites I see on Instagram and Facebook,
- 14:20Speaker 4: you know that I go get it. I'm also connected
- 14:23Speaker 4: with other partnerships with other organizations and I pull from
- 14:27Speaker 4: there or whatever. So I just try to find it
- 14:29Speaker 4: wherever I can until I'm in a position where I
- 14:32Speaker 4: can get some additional help. And so that's that's what
- 14:35Speaker 4: I do. I try to make sure I'm in tuned
- 14:36Speaker 4: to what is going on, the pulse of what's going
- 14:39Speaker 4: on and what internships are out there.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Cool.
- 14:41Speaker 3: When we come back, we're going to listen to how
- 14:43Speaker 3: we can help out Kimberly because she's raising our head
- 14:46Speaker 3: on Monday and Conversation master Class. It's about the community
- 14:49Speaker 3: and also people outside of HBC community community can also
- 14:53Speaker 3: help build out this app. You know, basically an HBCU
- 14:57Speaker 3: indeed basically what she's trying to offer from an employment standpoint,
- 15:01Speaker 3: be right back for more Money Making Conversation master Class.
- 15:11Speaker 5: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 15:15Speaker 5: with rough Shan McDonald.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Kimberly.
- 15:18Speaker 3: As we just letting everybody know the app really connects students, alumni, faculty,
- 15:26Speaker 3: Divine nine members, which I'm I'm a member of Megasi
- 15:29Speaker 3: five fraternity, so you connected me and supporters do a purpose,
- 15:33Speaker 3: purposeful and engaging mobile app. When you say engaging, what
- 15:37Speaker 3: does that mean when you said, I got purpose full,
- 15:40Speaker 3: But what does engaging mean?
- 15:42Speaker 4: Yeah, So engaging is you have to keep it relevant
- 15:46Speaker 4: and interesting for people who want to stay in the app,
- 15:49Speaker 4: to share the apps who want to use it, and
- 15:51Speaker 4: right now, you have to do it in phases, right
- 15:52Speaker 4: because as we said earlier, you know it costs money
- 15:55Speaker 4: to build it on an app. So the first phase
- 15:57Speaker 4: was to get people in there to create their profile.
- 16:00Speaker 4: They create their profile, they can choose how what kind
- 16:04Speaker 4: of connection they want to have, if they want to friendship,
- 16:07Speaker 4: social networking, they want to professional engagement, they can put
- 16:12Speaker 4: that there as well. You put where you live. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 4: there's even a place for you to say if you're
- 16:18Speaker 4: just an HPC supporter, HBC supporter. So everybody can put
- 16:22Speaker 4: in what they're looking for and what basically describes them.
- 16:25Speaker 4: And in addition to that, you have a chat feature,
- 16:28Speaker 4: so you can chat with the people that you make
- 16:30Speaker 4: connections with. Even with the chat feature, you can filter,
- 16:35Speaker 4: Like let's say you have fifty friends and you're like, no, what,
- 16:37Speaker 4: I just want to know who all is going to
- 16:39Speaker 4: be in Indianapolis this weekend? Who's from Indianapolis? So I'll
- 16:41Speaker 4: filter everybody that's from Indianapolis. You can filter people that
- 16:44Speaker 4: you know and then so right now, that's the most
- 16:47Speaker 4: engaging part. People can engage with each other. And then
- 16:49Speaker 4: through having the different events and job listings and job postings,
- 16:53Speaker 4: you know, that's keeping it fresh for them. So I
- 16:55Speaker 4: try to make sure it's fresh. We are going to
- 16:57Speaker 4: be adding two different phases to that. So the next
- 16:59Speaker 4: phase is going to be very similar to what you
- 17:01Speaker 4: can do on Facebook. You're gonna be able to say,
- 17:04Speaker 4: you know, basically, what is how's your day or what
- 17:06Speaker 4: are you thinking. You're gonna be able to actually post something.
- 17:10Speaker 4: You're gonna be able to if you want to post
- 17:11Speaker 4: your own events or what's happening, so it's not just
- 17:14Speaker 4: me or my future staff. You can post an event
- 17:17Speaker 4: or something that you have going on as well, and
- 17:19Speaker 4: I'll prove it. You can post it inside the app,
- 17:21Speaker 4: you can add video and all of that. Additionally, we're
- 17:25Speaker 4: gonna be adding forms, so there might be some some
- 17:27Speaker 4: forms that are questions on our mind, like hey, what
- 17:30Speaker 4: did you guys think of the Super Bowl? Do you
- 17:31Speaker 4: like Usher's performance? You know, you can actually add forms,
- 17:35Speaker 4: So we're gonna make it to the point where it
- 17:36Speaker 4: is very I would say, similar to Facebook in terms
- 17:40Speaker 4: of being able to interact a lot more. But right
- 17:42Speaker 4: now it's just the first stage of getting a profile created.
- 17:45Speaker 4: You're gonna be able to look at all the different
- 17:47Speaker 4: people that are in there. You can request to be
- 17:49Speaker 4: friends and connect with them, you can filter, and you
- 17:51Speaker 4: can chat with them. And so that's how we got it.
- 17:54Speaker 4: We got to keep it first. That's why I'm continuously
- 17:56Speaker 4: trying to add different functionality quicker quickly so that it
- 18:00Speaker 4: can be exactly where I wanted to be.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Wow, I guess I got a quick text, you know,
- 18:05Speaker 3: or someone asked me, what is Divine nine. I'm a
- 18:09Speaker 3: member of megasci Fhi fraternity, and so are you a
- 18:11Speaker 3: remember ariority Kimberly.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Uh No, but my parents are okay cool.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Delta Sigma, Theta Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Omega Sci Fi CAPA Alpha, PSI,
- 18:20Speaker 3: Alphai Alpha. Those are organizations black organizations that are a
- 18:24Speaker 3: member of the Divine Divine nine. So I wanted to
- 18:27Speaker 3: make sure. Sometimes we get to talking and just looped
- 18:30Speaker 3: into our own conversation, and a lot of people enjoying
- 18:32Speaker 3: the show don't know what we're talking about. So I
- 18:34Speaker 3: wanted to take time to really you know, put the
- 18:36Speaker 3: word out about you know, it's an organization. Omega sci
- 18:40Speaker 3: Fi changed my life, you know, because of the fact
- 18:43Speaker 3: it put me in a position. It gave me a
- 18:45Speaker 3: group of young men that had the same similar thought
- 18:49Speaker 3: and focused me. And I was wandering around in college
- 18:52Speaker 3: and I four and a half years I didn't. I
- 18:55Speaker 3: graduated in seventy years. So four and a half years
- 18:58Speaker 3: I was wandering around. I pledged in two and a
- 19:00Speaker 3: half years. I graduated because I got focused. So I
- 19:03Speaker 3: look at these things that you're bringing people in that
- 19:05Speaker 3: can help people become focused and help people see the
- 19:08Speaker 3: light in this case socially, academically and professionally. That's important.
- 19:15Speaker 3: But what I noted the most is this is a
- 19:17Speaker 3: pretty complicated app that you are developing. How did you
- 19:21Speaker 3: start with the idea? And a lot of people had
- 19:24Speaker 3: to tell you, girl, you've lost your mind.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Oh man, listen. A lot of people were like, well,
- 19:30Speaker 4: first I thought I lost my mind. I was like,
- 19:33Speaker 4: first of all, how much is it going to cost?
- 19:35Speaker 4: I don't have fifty thousand dollars to start a to
- 19:38Speaker 4: have Where am I get that from? But it was
- 19:42Speaker 4: for me. I am very spiritual and I have a
- 19:46Speaker 4: very great relationship with God, and God gave me that
- 19:49Speaker 4: idea and he was like, girl, you have been wanting
- 19:51Speaker 4: to I'm very entrepreneurial spirit. I've had a podcast, a
- 19:55Speaker 4: video podcast, I have my own show, I've written two books.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Like so, I'm always trying to up with something and
- 20:01Speaker 4: so I wanted to come up with something that really
- 20:03Speaker 4: tackled an issue that can make money in my sleep.
- 20:06Speaker 4: And so when this idea came about through the conversation,
- 20:09Speaker 4: I was like, forget it. I can't do this, and
- 20:12Speaker 4: God was like, what are you talking about, Yes you can,
- 20:15Speaker 4: And so immediately I did benchmarking. I did research. So
- 20:18Speaker 4: I looked at Facebook, I looked at dating apps because
- 20:20Speaker 4: I kind of wanted that swipe feature, but not really
- 20:23Speaker 4: a swhite feature. We had like a skipped feature, a
- 20:26Speaker 4: slight feature. So I looked at the different apps that
- 20:28Speaker 4: were very similar to what I wanted to do and
- 20:30Speaker 4: kind of said, okay, if LinkedIn Facebook, Instagram, Twitter all
- 20:36Speaker 4: came together, what would it look like? And so that's
- 20:39Speaker 4: what I came up with. So I came up with
- 20:41Speaker 4: a pitch to the app development team and they really
- 20:45Speaker 4: loved it. One of the reasons why they loved the
- 20:47Speaker 4: idea because they said, it's not just like a dating app,
- 20:49Speaker 4: it's more to it than that. And so from there,
- 20:52Speaker 4: I just kept kept coming up with ideas and how
- 20:54Speaker 4: I wanted it to be designed, and they made it happen.
- 20:58Speaker 4: And yeah, it took it took some money, but I'm
- 21:02Speaker 4: very glad that I took the risk. And the other
- 21:05Speaker 4: thing is, you know, this is money making conversations. You
- 21:08Speaker 4: got to give yourself time and give yourself grace. It's
- 21:11Speaker 4: not going to happen overnight. The other thing is the
- 21:13Speaker 4: adoption rate might be slow at first because people aren't sure,
- 21:16Speaker 4: like I don't know. And when it first launched, Oh,
- 21:19Speaker 4: we had some glitches, which is technology, right, and you
- 21:23Speaker 4: have to work through the glitches. I mean, because I
- 21:25Speaker 4: didn't have a support team, I have to handle like, hey,
- 21:27Speaker 4: well let me call you, let me show you how
- 21:28Speaker 4: to work this. Okay, you know, I'm handling all of that.
- 21:32Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, we got all
- 21:34Speaker 4: the glitches done and so now we're on the next
- 21:36Speaker 4: level and we just want to keep making it better
- 21:38Speaker 4: because again there's somebody else out there that's probably on
- 21:42Speaker 4: my tail, like, okay, I can do it, and I
- 21:44Speaker 4: can do it even better, and that's time because there's
- 21:46Speaker 4: enough out there for everyone. You have McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger Kam,
- 21:49Speaker 4: they all got hamburgers, but everybody's different, so there's enough
- 21:52Speaker 4: out there. So that's why you have to stay on
- 21:54Speaker 4: top of things, and you have to be fresh, and
- 21:56Speaker 4: you have to ask them, Okay, what else do you
- 21:58Speaker 4: want to see in this app? And that's why I
- 22:01Speaker 4: asked those questions, and that's why I'm making some additional
- 22:03Speaker 4: functionality improvements.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Cool, you know?
- 22:05Speaker 3: Okay, Now you have Android that's the number one platform
- 22:08Speaker 3: out there, and then you have an Apple or is
- 22:10Speaker 3: the Apple available on those platforms?
- 22:14Speaker 4: Yes? It is.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Now what did it get? Did you put it on
- 22:18Speaker 3: Apple first or Android first? Or you launched them simultaneously?
- 22:21Speaker 4: They did it simultaneously.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Awesome?
- 22:24Speaker 3: Now now, and the whole process of that, what was
- 22:27Speaker 3: the one glitch that really made you mad that you said,
- 22:30Speaker 3: why does this keep messing up? That you eventually got fixed,
- 22:34Speaker 3: of course, but you didn't see it happening because when
- 22:37Speaker 3: you lay out these great plans, you know, you think
- 22:39Speaker 3: they're just going to happen correctly, but you overcame. Because
- 22:42Speaker 3: I want people to hear these things. Not not be
- 22:44Speaker 3: frustrated by the process. Not let a glitch or something
- 22:48Speaker 3: that didn't go according to plan to run you down
- 22:51Speaker 3: the lane.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I quit.
- 22:52Speaker 3: This is not ever going to work because I know
- 22:54Speaker 3: you had those moments, you know, and who do you
- 22:56Speaker 3: turn to when you have those moments?
- 22:58Speaker 4: Kimberly, So I would say, there are a couple of
- 23:02Speaker 4: glitches that were frustrating. The biggest one was the filtering option,
- 23:05Speaker 4: because that was one of the main things with it
- 23:08Speaker 4: was filtering. Like I would filter and I wouldn't get
- 23:10Speaker 4: back what I filtered. I didn't understand it. And so
- 23:13Speaker 4: luckily the app company actually is in Atlanta, So like
- 23:17Speaker 4: I would write down all of the different glitches that
- 23:20Speaker 4: I would found, I would do research, I would try
- 23:22Speaker 4: to figure out, and then I would go into the
- 23:24Speaker 4: office and sit down with the actual developers and we
- 23:27Speaker 4: would go through step by step and we'd work it out.
- 23:30Speaker 4: And so yeah, as there were times where I'm like
- 23:32Speaker 4: I paid this amount of money, like this should be working,
- 23:34Speaker 4: Like I don't understand, like you've had you know, but
- 23:37Speaker 4: you can't get mad because it's technology, and it's new
- 23:40Speaker 4: technology and so meaning new technology to the system. So
- 23:44Speaker 4: you have to give it time, but you got to
- 23:46Speaker 4: stay on it. They there really were, you know, really
- 23:49Speaker 4: kind of like impressed with me, because they're like, do
- 23:50Speaker 4: you know how mean people like that we've built apps
- 23:52Speaker 4: for that don't come in and sit down with us,
- 23:55Speaker 4: or either they just let like a whole year go
- 23:57Speaker 4: by and they don't make any updates. They don't even
- 24:00Speaker 4: think about it. And I'm like, well, that's not gonna
- 24:02Speaker 4: be me because I put my blood, sweat and tears
- 24:04Speaker 4: in this and money, and so I'm gonna see it through.
- 24:07Speaker 4: And so when I would get frustrated, I remember calling
- 24:11Speaker 4: my mom like I just don't understand what's happening, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 4: and she was like, tell me about different inventors and
- 24:17Speaker 4: people that it didn't take. You know, it took more
- 24:19Speaker 4: than one time for things to happen. You have to
- 24:21Speaker 4: give it time. And really this just helps me tell
- 24:24Speaker 4: the story. It's part of my testimony. And so you know,
- 24:27Speaker 4: I know that God gave me this, and I know
- 24:29Speaker 4: he didn't say, Okay, I'm gonna give you this and
- 24:32Speaker 4: it's gonna be smooth sailing. He gave it to me.
- 24:35Speaker 4: But everything's worked the way it's supposed to work, but
- 24:37Speaker 4: it hasn't always been smooth, but it doesn't mean it's
- 24:39Speaker 4: not gonna work. Like right now, I think my first
- 24:42Speaker 4: payment because when you go into the app, it's only
- 24:45Speaker 4: it's free for thirty days, and then it's a dollar
- 24:47Speaker 4: ninety nine every month, and then of course when you
- 24:50Speaker 4: get paid, it's like a month behind. So I here,
- 24:53Speaker 4: I got my first payment of like ten dollars the
- 24:56Speaker 4: other day, and I started laughing, but I also was like,
- 24:59Speaker 4: you know what, that's okay because today it's ten dollars.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Tomorrow it's gonna be you know, one hundred, and it's
- 25:04Speaker 4: gonna be one thousand, it's gonna be ten thousand, and
- 25:07Speaker 4: so you just have to laugh at that, but also
- 25:09Speaker 4: understand that it's coming right, and if it wasn't supposed
- 25:12Speaker 4: to happen, it wouldn't happen.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate the honesty because a lot of people
- 25:16Speaker 3: don't understand that. You know, people start businesses and they
- 25:18Speaker 3: think that I'm opening this doughnut shop and they think
- 25:21Speaker 3: there's going to be a line of people out the door,
- 25:23Speaker 3: and it's not always the case. I remember when I
- 25:25Speaker 3: opened my comedy club. I opened it and it was
- 25:27Speaker 3: like fifteen people in the audience.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And I had to.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I had to, and I rank commercials on the radio.
- 25:33Speaker 3: I put out flyers, drop all the local barbershops, fifteen
- 25:36Speaker 3: people on opening night. And then I realized that this
- 25:39Speaker 3: is a process, a marketing process. I gotta stay at it,
- 25:42Speaker 3: I gotta believe it. And I started creating different plans
- 25:46Speaker 3: of action, and I started creating specialty nights.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I'm just talking about. That's what I had to do.
- 25:51Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I started creating an amateur night on Thursday, which became
- 25:53Speaker 3: the most popular night in my comedy club. And so
- 25:56Speaker 3: when I let when I allow individuals like you, Kimber
- 26:00Speaker 3: to come on my show and honestly talk to people.
- 26:02Speaker 3: You know, we all want to be millionaires, we all
- 26:05Speaker 3: want to be Elon Musk. But Elon Musk had some
- 26:08Speaker 3: rough times getting started too. That electric car didn't just
- 26:11Speaker 3: jump off the page. There was States didn't want his
- 26:13Speaker 3: electric cars. They want Texas name one of them. See,
- 26:16Speaker 3: they're never have an electric car in the state of Texas.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Now they got more electric cars than anybody. Because of
- 26:22Speaker 3: the fact that times change, and so times changing people
- 26:26Speaker 3: people will have to deal with the changes, and so
- 26:29Speaker 3: you're dealing with a community now, and we're talking about
- 26:31Speaker 3: HPCU community and tapping into the mobility the apps that
- 26:37Speaker 3: are popular and people could click of a button.
- 26:40Speaker 1: You can just tap into the HPCU community. That's awesome.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Yes, thank you, thank you.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Cool kimber Las. We to wrap up the call.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Anyway we can reach you or any other than going
- 26:53Speaker 3: to the Android and the Apple formats.
- 26:55Speaker 1: We're good.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yeah, you can go to I have a website, it's
- 26:59Speaker 4: hpcsocial dot Next. You can also follow me on Instagram,
- 27:04Speaker 4: the real HBC Social and then you can also follow
