- 1:34Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's given me
- 1:37Speaker 1: advice to many occasions. In the occasion didn't notice I'm
- 1:40Speaker 1: not broke. You know. He'll be interview with celebrity CEO,
- 1:43Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision make because it's what he likes
- 1:46Speaker 1: to do, It's what he likes to share. Now it's

- 1:53Speaker 1: Here we come, Here we go. Welcome to money making Conversations.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I'm your man. Rashan McDonald love to talk about stuff
- 2:00Speaker 1: that will make you bring value to your life. Give
- 2:04Speaker 1: you a plan, a plan of action, because a lot
- 2:06Speaker 1: of people talk, they don't have a plan of action.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I have a plan of action. I have a short
- 2:10Speaker 1: term plan. I don't believe in anybody who's trying to
- 2:12Speaker 1: talk a year from now, two years, or not three years.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Everything should be done on the six six week window.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That way, you readjusted. After you reach that goal in
- 2:20Speaker 1: six weeks, you have to short term your goals. That
- 2:23Speaker 1: way you can speed up your your your accomplishments. Because
- 2:27Speaker 1: what happens is most people make a mistake because they
- 2:29Speaker 1: have their goals set too high. Set small goals, reach
- 2:33Speaker 1: your small goals, build those small goals into bigger goals,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and then you have reached your ultimate goal, which is success.
- 2:40Speaker 1: That's called steps planning your steps of success. My next
- 2:43Speaker 1: guest is the founding chief executive and Managing Director of
- 2:46Speaker 1: gold As g O l d i E, a full
- 2:50Speaker 1: service a consumer driven brand marketing agency. A self educated
- 2:54Speaker 1: cultural anthropologist, she is a pioneer and culturally relevant purpose
- 2:58Speaker 1: driven marketing and it's the chief architect of one of
- 3:01Speaker 1: my all time favorite campaigns by Proctor and Gambles My
- 3:05Speaker 1: black is Beautiful. I can tell you how many times
- 3:07Speaker 1: I was part of that tour when I was doing radio.

- 3:22Speaker 1: The Steve Harvey Show, Good Morning America, and and is
- 3:26Speaker 1: on the show today to discuss a book that I
- 3:28Speaker 1: read this weekend called Paper Guards by Goldie Taylor. Please
- 3:33Speaker 1: welcome to my show, Money Making Conversations, my guests Goldie Taylor,
- 3:39Speaker 1: Gonna Mons McDonald. All, I am go. There have we
- 3:42Speaker 1: met before? No, I don't know that I have. I
- 3:46Speaker 1: know that we must be only one and we have
- 3:49Speaker 1: degree of who do you know? We both up? You know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: let's see Steve Harvey show that that go. Did she
- 3:59Speaker 1: come on the show? You know? I was sitting in
- 4:01Speaker 1: the room just you know, sometimes sometimes there's something that
- 4:04Speaker 1: but queer having you on the show. And where are
- 4:06Speaker 1: you at? Where are you based at? Let's get that
- 4:08Speaker 1: started first. I'm right here in sunny down town North Bockhead. Good. Now,
- 4:13Speaker 1: this book we're going to talk about the book, but
- 4:15Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about and bring my fans up
- 4:17Speaker 1: to speed on basically your brain who you are and
- 4:20Speaker 1: what you represent, and you have an opinion, you have thoughts,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and you share those thoughts on the ongoing basis what
- 4:26Speaker 1: drives you, Goldie? You know, I think if there's anything
- 4:31Speaker 1: that you know, people have sort of a defining moments
- 4:34Speaker 1: in their life, are sitting a moment of things that
- 4:36Speaker 1: change the trajectory of all that they are and do,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and you know, and I think everybody sort of socialized
- 4:42Speaker 1: a certain way. I was raised in a place called
- 4:44Speaker 1: the St. Louis, just on the easterly branks of Date
- 4:50Speaker 1: with large and you know, this is a tough place,
- 4:53Speaker 1: you know then and it is today. And I just realized,
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, as Barack Obama was coming to grow Um
- 5:01Speaker 1: as Senate as as the nominally elect in two thousand
- 5:05Speaker 1: and seven headed towards the presidency, that as senator from Illinois,
- 5:11Speaker 1: he had never been to East St. Louis. So even
- 5:14Speaker 1: the U. S senator for a state hadn't been there.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And it sort of let me know right away that
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know, it's not that he didn't care about it,
- 5:20Speaker 1: something more or people who lived that life. The decent
- 5:25Speaker 1: Louis itself did not have voice, that we did not
- 5:28Speaker 1: have a platform for the issues that were most important,
- 5:32Speaker 1: most salient to us in our lives. And I decided
- 5:36Speaker 1: one morning I woke up, I said I'm going to
- 5:38Speaker 1: be that voice. And everything or everything wrong in America,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I said, it is wrong in East St. Louis. You know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: everything from you know, infrastructure and social institution breakdown at
- 5:48Speaker 1: our family issues to taxation, everything wrong. And so I
- 5:52Speaker 1: just started to talk about those issues out loud and
- 5:54Speaker 1: right about them. And I happen to have a client
- 5:57Speaker 1: at the time. Uh NBC, what's the client? And we
- 6:02Speaker 1: were on the tail end of my Black is Beautiful
- 6:05Speaker 1: when I signed them on as a client, and I
- 6:07Speaker 1: wrote a column about Sale Talor and she had become,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you know, the selection for UM John McCain to beat
- 6:18Speaker 1: her vice presidential running being vice presidential run. I wrote
- 6:21Speaker 1: that column and it went viral. I wrote the column,
- 6:24Speaker 1: it was posted on ebony jet dot com, and I
- 6:26Speaker 1: started getting letters from as far away as Venezuela and Guatemala,
- 6:30Speaker 1: uh email from Singapore, and knew that now something had
- 6:35Speaker 1: been captured, and I just began to write and write
- 6:40Speaker 1: and write. And within weeks, you know, I was on
- 6:42Speaker 1: the Rachel Radof show, I was doing Lasso with Laurence O'Donnell,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I was doing within a six months, John Lemon every weekend. Um.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Certainly as somebody just hired me. They just took me
- 6:54Speaker 1: up to the street. And so I went to work
- 6:56Speaker 1: for NBC News full time as a political ass and
- 7:01Speaker 1: that's really where the national platform began. But I had
- 7:06Speaker 1: been writing all of my life. I just decided one
- 7:08Speaker 1: morning I was going to put that passion to work
- 7:11Speaker 1: on behalf of people who Astra was did not have
- 7:14Speaker 1: the voice mescessary to have the issues. Yeah, that's why
- 7:17Speaker 1: I created this show, to just let people hear these stories,
- 7:20Speaker 1: because they only hear the the the in effect, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: when you're there and and this is this is this
- 7:26Speaker 1: is a passion and you wrote on passion. And but
- 7:29Speaker 1: I want to I want to go back to something
- 7:31Speaker 1: that I mentioned in your credits. Uh you know my
- 7:33Speaker 1: Black is Beautiful, uh is, which is an amazing campaign.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I just want to talk about, how do just give
- 7:41Speaker 1: me You know, you were at the forefront of being
- 7:43Speaker 1: the voice of making that happen. Tell me a campaign
- 7:47Speaker 1: that that became that relevant in our society. How did
- 7:51Speaker 1: they come about? What was the what were the stages
- 7:54Speaker 1: and making that because there was a lot of yes,
- 7:56Speaker 1: there was a lot of nose, There was a lot
- 7:57Speaker 1: of and just you know decisions that had to be
- 8:00Speaker 1: made before I got launched. How does the campaign like
- 8:02Speaker 1: that get launched? Well, it was a tough launched. We
- 8:05Speaker 1: were at a small boutique agency in New York City
- 8:08Speaker 1: places called Lippi Taylor founded by a woman named Maureen Lippy,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and we had a client proctat Gamble, which they had
- 8:15Speaker 1: a small piece of that business. One of their assistant
- 8:19Speaker 1: vice presidents name is Nigel Tito Read came into our
- 8:21Speaker 1: offices one afternoon with a product manager, King Eric Kings,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and again another young woman named Emo, three young black
- 8:28Speaker 1: executives from procting Gamble, and Nigel began to tell us
- 8:32Speaker 1: the story. You know, Nijo is a very dark complexioned
- 8:37Speaker 1: woman and been to tell her a story about when
- 8:39Speaker 1: she was a child, she her mother brought her her
- 8:41Speaker 1: first Bobbie dolls, took the dolls outside the play and
- 8:44Speaker 1: she lived in a predominantly white neighborhood and the little
- 8:48Speaker 1: white girls told her her dolls couldn't play with them,
- 8:51Speaker 1: that her dolls were ugly, that they could be the
- 8:54Speaker 1: maid if they were going to play, And so neither
- 8:56Speaker 1: went home crying, and she sent her mother. They told
- 8:59Speaker 1: him my dolls were They said, I couldn't play with them,
- 9:02Speaker 1: And she said, don't you know that black is beautiful?
- 9:05Speaker 1: The Nigel is, you know, at her middle forties today
- 9:08Speaker 1: and so we're talking about, you know, the mid seventies
- 9:10Speaker 1: when this all went down. Um that night, her mother
- 9:14Speaker 1: put her first coffee of Essence and Evony magazine on
- 9:17Speaker 1: her pulle before she went to there. And so Nigel said,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I just want everybody to know that black is a
- 9:23Speaker 1: beautiful and I think that there is a campaign in
- 9:25Speaker 1: that and I don't know what it is. Can we
- 9:28Speaker 1: talk about that? And so what was supposed to be
- 9:30Speaker 1: an hour meeting went on for a three or four
- 9:33Speaker 1: until it was time for him to hit the plane
- 9:34Speaker 1: to hit back to Cympinematic. And what I said to
- 9:37Speaker 1: her during the conversation was, you know, blackness is a
- 9:40Speaker 1: personal thing. That we begin to talk about her colorism
- 9:44Speaker 1: and what my perspective on blackness is and how I
- 9:48Speaker 1: come to it. It's a very personal thing. And so
- 9:50Speaker 1: if you qualify it with my and make it personal,
- 9:53Speaker 1: then you had something. And so we began to talk
- 9:56Speaker 1: about what that meant. You know, that's the white boy
- 9:59Speaker 1: drive races out all through home, all through home to Atlanta.
- 10:03Speaker 1: That night, it had stayed with me, what is my
- 10:06Speaker 1: what does my blackest muticle with me? And I turned
- 10:08Speaker 1: it over to a vice servant who was working for
- 10:09Speaker 1: me on my team at that time. I signed a
- 10:11Speaker 1: heat and she wrote a poem. No one wrote that
- 10:14Speaker 1: poem for about three days, just hung around in our
- 10:16Speaker 1: email box, and Nija and I happened to open it
- 10:19Speaker 1: on the same evening and we called it to the
- 10:20Speaker 1: stream and it was the original my blackest beautiful poem.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And from that poem, I said, this is a national
- 10:26Speaker 1: conversation on the phone. Is Goldie Taylor an incredible political
- 10:31Speaker 1: analysts Her new book Paper guards At novel of money,
- 10:35Speaker 1: race and politics. Uh, you can, it's in the stores
- 10:39Speaker 1: right now, correct, Cody, it is. Indeed, it is. One
- 10:42Speaker 1: of my friends called at each side of consto eating
- 10:46Speaker 1: there is everywhere. There's five books or slow from Barnes
- 10:49Speaker 1: and Noble to Goads, go to wal martin Target and
- 10:53Speaker 1: get online the course of Amazon. Let me tell you
- 10:56Speaker 1: some this is uh. I I tell people because I'm
- 10:59Speaker 1: a right from the sitcom writer, no novelist, and it's
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know, I see this book as a movie. I
- 11:08Speaker 1: see this book as a series. I see this book
- 11:10Speaker 1: our television opportunities coming your way because of your writing.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Because this book, if it got optioned out, I would
- 11:16Speaker 1: not be shocked. It was preemptive and so and that
- 11:19Speaker 1: means it was brought as options as a dramatic series
- 11:25Speaker 1: prior to its publication, and so, uh what we can't
- 11:29Speaker 1: say who did it? The pre emption happened in June.
- 11:33Speaker 1: The book came out in October, and now we're on
- 11:37Speaker 1: to write the sequel, and so we are for paper
- 11:40Speaker 1: Gods has had uh some immediate sus. I think based
- 11:45Speaker 1: on it's it's stronger, it's stronger storytelling, based on its characterization,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and the fact that Atlanta, Hollywood is still enamored with us. Um,
- 11:53Speaker 1: they're not only none with our tax class for bringing film,
- 11:56Speaker 1: so they're none of how things worked out here. And
- 11:58Speaker 1: so we're looking to not just based production to the
- 12:01Speaker 1: septum here and that's a different thing. Um. And so
- 12:04Speaker 1: you're seeing a lot, a lot more of that. Donald
- 12:07Speaker 1: Glover's Atlanta as a prot so that it extordinar in
- 12:10Speaker 1: the world. But the people are frankly intrigued with us
- 12:13Speaker 1: as a city, and so paper guys went very quickly. Um,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and I'm working on a number of other original projects
- 12:20Speaker 1: today that are both colevism and film. But enjoying, enjoying
- 12:24Speaker 1: this brand new career for me. Well, congratulations, so that
- 12:27Speaker 1: I wasn't shocked, you know, like I said, you right,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you know, like I said, it's it's it's almost like
- 12:33Speaker 1: I've been fortunate by life. Are born in the inner
- 12:36Speaker 1: City and I've went to all black high school with
- 12:40Speaker 1: the University of Houston, which is a dominant white institution,
- 12:44Speaker 1: And these lifestyles that we live, these stories that you
- 12:47Speaker 1: tell a layered in this book, where you see success,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and you see the street talk, you see the political talk,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you see the society talk, and you have to all
- 12:57Speaker 1: these layers. And I feel that the life that you
- 12:59Speaker 1: live allows you to will be able to communicate these
- 13:01Speaker 1: different stories. But it's just amazing. I feel fortunate to
- 13:04Speaker 1: be able to share your story and I want to
- 13:06Speaker 1: promote this, So please send me your any banners that
- 13:10Speaker 1: you have taken promoted on my social social media here,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Miss Taylor. Sure, so we've got a number of them. Um.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Publisher has done. St. Martin's Press has been very good
- 13:19Speaker 1: to me in terms of helping across promote this book
- 13:21Speaker 1: across social media within bookstores and so we've been I've
- 13:25Speaker 1: been busted, to say the least, with you know, this
- 13:28Speaker 1: being my third novel, I knowing what I'm wanted to do.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I'm headed out to the Los Angeles Accessible Books in
- 13:34Speaker 1: April UM to speak on a panel about writing your
- 13:38Speaker 1: political thrillers than this trumpion era. So what that's like, um?
- 13:43Speaker 1: And how close to the bones can you really get
- 13:46Speaker 1: when you write thrillers such as these? Um, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 1: the complications have really come along with that. And so
- 13:51Speaker 1: it's been a it's been a good good time for
- 13:54Speaker 1: me writing wise, but to be able to do it
- 13:57Speaker 1: and live and live in love here in Atlanta's own
- 14:01Speaker 1: a new book, Paper Guards by Goldie Taylor's and the stores. Now,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I wanna thank you for coming on my show. An amazing,
- 14:08Speaker 1: amazing read, uh, A novel of money raising politics based
- 14:12Speaker 1: in Atlanta. The sequel is coming, It's gonna be on TV.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Keep winning We'll be right back with more from Marsan McDonald.
- 14:21Speaker 1: The money making conversations don't touch that down. How many
- 14:25Speaker 1: of us have looked at our finances and scream, how
- 14:28Speaker 1: can we make this much and still have so much debt?
- 14:30Speaker 1: It just creased upon you right. Unexpected repairs replaced the

- 15:44Speaker 1: called Crushed, and I ordered me a half of Wiian
- 15:48Speaker 1: pizza and then a half meat lover Pizza has some

- 16:59Speaker 1: I didn't really know what to say. Well, we look
- 17:01Speaker 1: at man, it's about food, brother, it's about that folk foul.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I got me so excited about myself. I was like, whoa,
- 17:09Speaker 1: well you should be because of the fact that what
- 17:12Speaker 1: you do in the life we live now, uh, cookie
- 17:17Speaker 1: and how you cook and the different ways you can
- 17:21Speaker 1: serve people. You know, they you know, they talk about
- 17:25Speaker 1: to do it yourself networks, but the food industry, the
- 17:28Speaker 1: cooking show industries his own version of do it yourself. Correct,
- 17:31Speaker 1: But they just don't say do it yourself right? Correct?
- 17:35Speaker 1: You're right? Uh, it is truly do it yourself that
- 17:37Speaker 1: they're not telling you that, they're giving you that support,
- 17:41Speaker 1: that backbone to make you feel like they're there and
- 17:44Speaker 1: then you are truly doing it yourself like we're doing
- 17:46Speaker 1: it on just so I know, because because I watched it.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I watched a show, you know, I watched the show
- 17:52Speaker 1: and I go, okay, okay, let's see what they're doing. Okay,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and I get mad if they don't give me the recipe.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You know, That's that just drives me easy when I
- 18:01Speaker 1: see something good on TV and I want to make
- 18:02Speaker 1: it and I don't have the recipe. So tell us
- 18:05Speaker 1: about your little history of how you got how you
- 18:07Speaker 1: got started, because I want to talk about this, uh,
- 18:09Speaker 1: this restaurant that you have. Uh it was something on
- 18:12Speaker 1: the menu that that that really caught my attention. But
- 18:15Speaker 1: tell me how you got started this, yef, because you
- 18:17Speaker 1: know I'm I'm an award winning baker. I got started
- 18:19Speaker 1: baking like four years ago. That's how I got started.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Oh wow, okay, so I got started about fifteen years ago.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I was literally just what did lu Shan is just
- 18:30Speaker 1: hobby fying out here. You're just telling people I'm award
- 18:32Speaker 1: winning baker. This is what he do. Follow his instructions,
- 18:36Speaker 1: you know, said I want one of those ties or
- 18:38Speaker 1: send it to me. Absolutely absolutely. Um So yeah, I
- 18:42Speaker 1: started the kitchen super young when my grandmother got me
- 18:44Speaker 1: starting to kitchen really young. Um, and she made it
- 18:47Speaker 1: really fun for me. UM. So I used to spend
- 18:50Speaker 1: time in the kitchen. I didn't really watched cartoons or anything.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Cooking was my cartoon. UM. Kind of fast forward love cooking.
- 18:57Speaker 1: We try to do family birthday dinners and mess up
- 19:01Speaker 1: people's birthdays trying to cook something that my mom would
- 19:04Speaker 1: allow me to cook. Um. But they were really feeling
- 19:07Speaker 1: me or getting me prepared for what I'm doing now.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And then about the age of fourteen, I started working
- 19:13Speaker 1: as a dishwasher at a country clubs to ride my bike,
- 19:16Speaker 1: my bike back and forth. So I grew up in
- 19:17Speaker 1: the northeast Pennsylvania and the Poconos. Um. I wrote my
- 19:21Speaker 1: bike back and forth. I went to culinary school and
- 19:24Speaker 1: coloring stud of America and then wind up working in
- 19:27Speaker 1: New York City. While while I was working in New
- 19:30Speaker 1: York City, I lived with family in Harlem. Um, and
- 19:32Speaker 1: I've been in Harlem ever since now for about fifteen years. Regulations, Now,
- 19:37Speaker 1: what are you And one of the restaurants that you
- 19:39Speaker 1: have was every at Life Hotel. Yes, okay cool, And
- 19:43Speaker 1: that's in the Nomad district. If anybody knows that's that's
- 19:46Speaker 1: kind of like it called North of Madison Square and uh,
- 19:49Speaker 1: it's a really I guess it's it's a whole neighborhood
- 19:52Speaker 1: like just transforming. Correct, Yeah, the neighborhood is really transforming.
- 19:56Speaker 1: It's a transforming neighborhood. We're on We're on a block
- 20:01Speaker 1: that's transforming. You would know it as back in the
- 20:05Speaker 1: day as like Midtown or little Little West Africa or
- 20:09Speaker 1: Korea Town. So we're like one block away from Korea towns.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So were thirty first Street between fits and six Um
- 20:16Speaker 1: Henry in the Life Hotel or Henry by j J.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And let me just the setting is in Manhattan. Manhattan
- 20:21Speaker 1: and New York City is where we're talking about the
- 20:23Speaker 1: restaurant location. Now, there's a couple of you know, I'm
- 20:26Speaker 1: a foodie, so immediately when I when it was coming
- 20:28Speaker 1: to my show, I had to go to the menu.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I had to go to the menu. What called my
- 20:34Speaker 1: eye with the colleg green salad. Oh yeah, that's the
- 20:38Speaker 1: color green salad is an infamous see college greasy. Everybody
- 20:42Speaker 1: up on college green salad. So you know, so that
- 20:47Speaker 1: means that, Okay, it's the college greens are not cooked,
- 20:51Speaker 1: they're treated like lettish. Correct, colle greens are not cooked
- 20:54Speaker 1: at all. You know, Cale has been getting all this
- 20:57Speaker 1: credit in the last ten years. Right the greens I've worked,
- 21:01Speaker 1: Collar greens have worked harder than kal. So I wanted
- 21:06Speaker 1: to give you know, I want to give Kyla Green
- 21:08Speaker 1: some type of a different breath or knowing that you
- 21:11Speaker 1: can eat coylar green draw and it's really good for
- 21:13Speaker 1: you to stem in everything. So it's a color green salad.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It feels like a chop salad. It comes to some
- 21:19Speaker 1: red beans, cucumbers, and like in a coconut dressing. Okay,
- 21:23Speaker 1: now now that's that's genius right there. Now you're in
- 21:26Speaker 1: the kitchen. Now you're the mad scientist, right So this
- 21:30Speaker 1: is a mad scientist salad. Okay, I'm just telling y'all.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I eat everywhere. I eat everywhere. I had the collar
- 21:35Speaker 1: green soup I was and I was in flying biscuit
- 21:39Speaker 1: yesterday I had this scrambled eggs and colar green with bacon.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So I've never had the college green salad. So this
- 21:45Speaker 1: is a mad scientist mix. So, so you you're telling
- 21:48Speaker 1: people you're you're thinking about this idea, Well, how did
- 21:51Speaker 1: you look at you did look at you, like, really
- 21:53Speaker 1: j J. Really you think. I mean, people look at
- 21:56Speaker 1: people look at me crazy all the time with the
- 21:58Speaker 1: colle green salad. I think I sold the cole greens
- 22:00Speaker 1: and salt water will make them tender. They think a
- 22:03Speaker 1: branch them in water. No, I just treat the colar green. Truly.
- 22:07Speaker 1: There's a collar green that we're buying the store. It's
- 22:09Speaker 1: not a baby colar green. It's not a super baby colargreen.
- 22:12Speaker 1: This is this is a colar green um. And it's
- 22:16Speaker 1: it's really nice. It's it's something that is familiar but
- 22:19Speaker 1: unfamiliar um. And it's something that you can truly do
- 22:23Speaker 1: at home. You can get these colar greens and you know,
- 22:26Speaker 1: you can put chicken on top of salmon or some
- 22:29Speaker 1: you some steak, you know. So so you know, I'm
- 22:34Speaker 1: just taking you along the journey of the African diaspora
- 22:37Speaker 1: and kind of paying homage and respect to the flavors
- 22:42Speaker 1: of who we are and kind of what we do. Okay, cool,
- 22:44Speaker 1: let's talk about it. Okay, So you got the beans
- 22:46Speaker 1: in there, you got the quem. I think they they're
- 22:48Speaker 1: assuming you a slice. Cucumbers are chopped cup cumbers that
- 22:52Speaker 1: you have in this house, thinly sliced cucumbers. You have
- 22:55Speaker 1: to sled cucumbers and cash you some candy, cash shoes
- 22:58Speaker 1: and red bean candy. Yeah, just mad scientist. I like it.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I like that you called me the mad scientists. Who
- 23:07Speaker 1: has ever had candy Cashi's I'm just sorry, that's candypycns. Okay,
- 23:12Speaker 1: yea all that? Okay, Now the coconut dressy, the coconut dressy,
- 23:17Speaker 1: tell me about that. So coconut dressing is uh, just
- 23:21Speaker 1: some coconut milk, a little bit of bird's eye chili,
- 23:25Speaker 1: cumin um, blended oil, some shallot. And the kid is
- 23:31Speaker 1: that the spice and the the spice and the coconut
- 23:36Speaker 1: dressing will cut through the bitterness of the color green.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So it gives it a really nice balance. So if
- 23:40Speaker 1: you don't have like bird's eye chili, you could use chipotle,
- 23:43Speaker 1: or you can use some other type of chili that
- 23:45Speaker 1: you really love. So another thing he caught my eye
- 23:48Speaker 1: and I really didn't understand. It was called it was
- 23:51Speaker 1: all a dream. That was all the dream we used
- 23:55Speaker 1: to reword of magazines. Um, if you can get the
- 23:59Speaker 1: whole on you. So I saw you get one of everything.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I said that you should share with fortified people. So
- 24:11Speaker 1: it's a big celebration at the table. You're having this
- 24:15Speaker 1: ultimate dream meal. Um and uh, I just referenced after
- 24:20Speaker 1: the Biggie song. I'm telling you see, he knows I've
- 24:23Speaker 1: looked at his menus. You know. Do you get to
- 24:25Speaker 1: sweet potato pie too? That's your dessert? Did you get
- 24:28Speaker 1: that sleeperteato pie? You gotta get the legendary if we
- 24:33Speaker 1: do it with purple yam, you know, you have to
- 24:36Speaker 1: get coking on ice cream. You know, we're really we're
- 24:39Speaker 1: really taking it. Oh my goodness, so so so. The
- 24:42Speaker 1: thing about it, I really really when I talk about food,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I really like talking to people who enjoy food. You
- 24:49Speaker 1: enjoy food, You enjoy the kitchen experience. I'm assuming it
- 24:53Speaker 1: goes back to your childhood when he was in the
- 24:56Speaker 1: kitchen and and then being able to look at other people.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Are you washing dishes? Being able to see other people
- 25:01Speaker 1: do something that you want to do it it's a
- 25:03Speaker 1: passion for you, right j J. Yeah, it's a big
- 25:06Speaker 1: passion for me. You know. Um, the reason why I
- 25:09Speaker 1: love cooking food and really fortunate in having one restaurant
- 25:12Speaker 1: right now and the second one coming as I'm connecting
- 25:15Speaker 1: people every day. And the greatest connector's food. So if
- 25:18Speaker 1: I'm able to do it with the food that I
- 25:20Speaker 1: truly love to cook and give you these amazing nostalgic
- 25:24Speaker 1: moment um, then I've done my job and to keep
- 25:28Speaker 1: me going to the next dayl I will be in
- 25:31Speaker 1: New York tomorrow, my friend. Okay, amazing, So so I
- 25:35Speaker 1: should see you tomorrow. You will see me tomorrow night.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I swear to you you will see me tomorrow night. Um,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I will definitely want to try this colleague green salad.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm telling your front um, I haven't ready for you.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I will be and I just wanted to just don't
- 25:51Speaker 1: put no chicken one in another. I just want to
- 25:54Speaker 1: because that's that's that's just such a great level of
- 25:56Speaker 1: curiosity for me. I know it's gonna taste great. And
- 25:58Speaker 1: then so because the the restaurant opens at five thirty
- 26:01Speaker 1: and correct, yes, you know, I'll be on top of
- 26:06Speaker 1: your game, baby, over top of your guy. But my friend,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I had amazing time with this interview. Again, Uh, incredible chef.

- 29:44Speaker 1: years now. Football is not his future. I'll talk about
- 29:48Speaker 1: all athletes come on at there's a there's a there's
- 29:51Speaker 1: a window. When you're betting your game on your physicality,
- 29:57Speaker 1: you have to know that that is not your future.
- 29:59Speaker 1: What do you do? What do you do? You shape that?
- 30:01Speaker 1: What do you do with that opportunity? Well, he's doing
- 30:03Speaker 1: a lot with that opportunity. He's on the show today
- 30:05Speaker 1: to talk about his football career and his digital show,
- 30:08Speaker 1: low Key let So YouTube. It's a traveling business review show.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, Ryan Delaire. Yeah, are
- 30:19Speaker 1: you doing? Come on? Not Ryan, you can come to
- 30:21Speaker 1: your your TV host, man, come on your TV. Okay,
- 30:24Speaker 1: come on. I'm proud to be here on the Money
- 30:26Speaker 1: Making Conversations talking about getting the money and talking about
- 30:30Speaker 1: building business, talking about building business relationships. I'm proud of you.
- 30:34Speaker 1: You got a TV show that you're creating that you're
- 30:36Speaker 1: traveling around the country. Tell us how that concept started
- 30:40Speaker 1: and tell us um the first tell us how the
- 30:43Speaker 1: concept started. It's called low Key Lit. Yeah. So with
- 30:49Speaker 1: low Key Lit, I came up with the concept. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: basically was traveling, you know, from different places, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 1: from state to state. My um, I think second year
- 30:59Speaker 1: after the season with my agent, you know, I went
- 31:01Speaker 1: to the When did I go to I went to
- 31:04Speaker 1: the Super Bowl in Houston. I had a couple of
- 31:06Speaker 1: events had to do there with him, and then I
- 31:09Speaker 1: had I went to the All Star Game that year.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Then I traveled to Miami. Says I traveled to Miami.
- 31:15Speaker 1: So then, thinking back to when I was doing that,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I was thinking, like, if I'm traveling to all these
- 31:19Speaker 1: different places, I should try to monetize it or you know,
- 31:23Speaker 1: do something and create a following. Because I felt like
- 31:27Speaker 1: I was going to all these like you know, I
- 31:28Speaker 1: wanted to know what were the best places to eat
- 31:32Speaker 1: when I was in those locations. So I came up
- 31:36Speaker 1: with the concept of low Key Lit because I wanted
- 31:39Speaker 1: to be the guy that everybody can reach out to
- 31:42Speaker 1: if they wanted to know what place to eat in
- 31:44Speaker 1: a certain city. So I basically came up with the
- 31:48Speaker 1: show I wanted. It's called low key Lit because I
- 31:52Speaker 1: go to the places that are literally low key and
- 31:54Speaker 1: they're lit. Like places are like, you know, not many
- 31:58Speaker 1: people would know about. You know, they're like my pop shops,
- 32:01Speaker 1: but like you know, just like everyone else, you know,
- 32:04Speaker 1: Mama pop shops have like some of the best flavors
- 32:08Speaker 1: you know I went to a place. Yeah, I went
- 32:11Speaker 1: to a place in Atlanta one time, and I had
- 32:12Speaker 1: to put them on my show called Mr. Everything. Um,
- 32:16Speaker 1: it's a really nice place to have like you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: steam veggies. Everything was grilled over rice. You know, steam
- 32:23Speaker 1: veggies was like a certain meat, whether it's like salmon, um, chicken,
- 32:30Speaker 1: et cetera. And they would have like really great food.
- 32:33Speaker 1: So I had to put them on the show. That
- 32:34Speaker 1: was one of my first episodes when I was growing.
- 32:37Speaker 1: And you know, I just love the fact that I
- 32:39Speaker 1: can go to these hidden gems and show my perspective
- 32:42Speaker 1: of it from my athletes perspective, and I would just
- 32:44Speaker 1: put a you know, plenty of my different teammates on
- 32:48Speaker 1: there as well. Now he's just there for the athletes perspective. See,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm not an athlete. I was just a regular eater now,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know. So with that being said, what what what
- 32:59Speaker 1: are the you said? The criteria basically is these hidden jams,
- 33:04Speaker 1: you know, low profile, but you know everybody knows somebody
- 33:07Speaker 1: enough people don't don't know about them. So you go in,
- 33:09Speaker 1: you're dine and now I see a camera. Is a
- 33:13Speaker 1: camera crew follow you around us? The actual camera is
- 33:16Speaker 1: it a iPad? Is it a your iPhone? Well? How
- 33:20Speaker 1: are you? How is this show being shot? So it's
- 33:24Speaker 1: being shot with um a camera. We we shot with
- 33:29Speaker 1: a Sony camera. Then I shot with the cannon camera.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And you know, I don't have like two cameraman with me,
- 33:35Speaker 1: And basically I would and I would basically go to
- 33:39Speaker 1: the restaurant, talk to him, discuss what I was doing.
- 33:42Speaker 1: And I don't have it everything within contract. I would
- 33:45Speaker 1: do a press release just a you know, just for
- 33:47Speaker 1: legal purposes. Um. Yeah, you don't want to go in
- 33:50Speaker 1: there with no kind of dination right there? You know
- 33:53Speaker 1: what I mean? Everything is, yeah, exactly. You know you
- 33:57Speaker 1: want to start tapping on the show. Excuse me, sir, sir,
- 34:01Speaker 1: sir sir with all these cameras, who let you all
- 34:03Speaker 1: in here my show? So you got no yeah, like
- 34:11Speaker 1: you definitely wanted to everything to be business business oriented.
- 34:15Speaker 1: So with that, I basically I have my two camera man,
- 34:19Speaker 1: I'll create a whole blueprint of how I want everything orchestrated,
- 34:23Speaker 1: and we just go in and we shoot. Here here's
- 34:26Speaker 1: my thoughts. Because I saw the I saw the cookie visit,
- 34:31Speaker 1: I saw the bowling Bolling alley, I saw the Crab
- 34:35Speaker 1: visit in Houston. I've seen you know if I like you,
- 34:42Speaker 1: You're you're chrismatic, you look good, you feel the camera,
- 34:46Speaker 1: I would do it more like, uh like an iPhone style,
- 34:51Speaker 1: so it feels like it feels like it feels like
- 34:53Speaker 1: it's it feels like it's a it's like, you know,
- 34:55Speaker 1: you just invite them into the world. I just just
- 34:58Speaker 1: just ra Sean mcdonal, Okay, I've been or television. Just
- 35:00Speaker 1: name three hit TV shows, blockbuster hits, R I think
- 35:04Speaker 1: I know what I'm talking about a little bit. Just
- 35:06Speaker 1: but I love you and I want to give you
- 35:07Speaker 1: a little bit advice. You can take it or you can,
- 35:10Speaker 1: like uh later on let it marinate. But if you
- 35:13Speaker 1: would bring down the production level and make it more
- 35:16Speaker 1: like uh like like your your point of view shot man,
- 35:21Speaker 1: I dude, I would watch that. And I said I
- 35:23Speaker 1: won't watching now, but that's just a thought and I
- 35:26Speaker 1: wanted to hear. I want to just talk a little
- 35:27Speaker 1: production back and forth with you, because you're the executive
- 35:30Speaker 1: producer talking. I'm an executive producer talking, and then we
- 35:33Speaker 1: can let our listeners know how how to top producers
- 35:36Speaker 1: talk and developing the TV show what are your thoughts
- 35:39Speaker 1: when I say, hey, you know, let's let's let's bring
- 35:42Speaker 1: down the quality and make it more like a personal journey,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and you you just happen to be eating there and
- 35:48Speaker 1: it just popped off like that. Yeah. Yeah, I basically,
- 35:53Speaker 1: um I did. I did a point of view basically
- 35:58Speaker 1: like a blog. Setting did that, but I merely did
- 36:01Speaker 1: that for when I was traveling, So I yeah, I
- 36:05Speaker 1: did that. So I have like two different productions. I
- 36:08Speaker 1: have like the low key lit like when I actually
- 36:11Speaker 1: have a production like it's an episode, and I have
- 36:14Speaker 1: local lit vlogs. So when I did like the local
- 36:18Speaker 1: lit vlogs, I actually went to um Columbia like in
- 36:23Speaker 1: South America, and I had a vlog of just doing
- 36:26Speaker 1: different things while I was out there that people probably
- 36:28Speaker 1: never knew I was out there in Colombia. And I
- 36:33Speaker 1: did like Paraglider, I did a TV writing and I
- 36:36Speaker 1: just sold the whole Yeah, and then I did also
- 36:39Speaker 1: South Africa last year as well, and I just show
- 36:43Speaker 1: what it was like to be m hmm, yeah, that's
- 36:46Speaker 1: that's some fun stuff. And so but no, but no
- 36:48Speaker 1: camera crew was falling around. You just kind of like
- 36:50Speaker 1: doing it yourself yeah, I have my my camera had
- 36:55Speaker 1: a go pro and I had my phone. That's how
- 36:58Speaker 1: I just yeah, and I just wanted to show raw
- 37:01Speaker 1: footage of how everything is, how everything is you know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: over there. So that was really good. But like when
- 37:08Speaker 1: I usually do my traveling, I usually try to blog that.
- 37:11Speaker 1: But like for the production of the of the show,
- 37:14Speaker 1: when I'm you know, at the restaurant, I probably did
- 37:17Speaker 1: one episode and I was just blogging and I had
- 37:20Speaker 1: the camera to interview on me. But majority of the time,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I'm make it, you know, a quality. I'm making it
- 37:29Speaker 1: like a pretty good quality episode. Well, I'm not saying
- 37:32Speaker 1: it's not I'm just saying that what I'm asking you
- 37:34Speaker 1: to do is not a quality. It's just it's just
- 37:36Speaker 1: that when you with low key, low key lit, you
- 37:39Speaker 1: know that it's a it's really a cool concept and
- 37:42Speaker 1: it's from your point of view. And I'm not saying
- 37:43Speaker 1: the camera has to be on you. You know, you
- 37:45Speaker 1: can turn when you I'm just telling you, is that
- 37:48Speaker 1: advising you? Because like I said, I love your idea.
- 37:50Speaker 1: I wouldn't be pitching your idea, wouldn't have you on
- 37:52Speaker 1: the show. I wanted to bring on the show just
- 37:54Speaker 1: to talk to you and let people know that if
- 37:56Speaker 1: you have a dream, you can do it yourself. And
- 37:58Speaker 1: that's what he's doing. You know, he's taking it upon himself.
- 38:01Speaker 1: He has a time, and he's doing it himself, and
- 38:04Speaker 1: he's putting it on YouTube. So where can people find
- 38:06Speaker 1: episodes of your show? So all you have to do
- 38:10Speaker 1: is to go to low Key lit. It's um. All
- 38:12Speaker 1: you have to do is type in low key let
- 38:16Speaker 1: and low key is one word, and let it is
- 38:18Speaker 1: a separate word, and type that into YouTube and then
- 38:20Speaker 1: you can see the episodes. I have about like probably
- 38:24Speaker 1: eight or ten episodes on there where you can see,
- 38:27Speaker 1: or you can just go to my Instagram and I
- 38:29Speaker 1: have to link in the bio and my Instagram is
- 38:34Speaker 1: you can just type in my name, Ryan Hilaire d
- 38:37Speaker 1: As and dog E l A I R E and
- 38:41Speaker 1: then you can just find the link in in the
- 38:42Speaker 1: bio and the link actually brings you to the episode
- 38:46Speaker 1: when I went to a coffee shop that had creeps,
- 38:48Speaker 1: they had ice cream, they had a lot of different
- 38:51Speaker 1: things there. So you know, if you had that link,
- 38:54Speaker 1: you'll see all my episodes absolutely so so far. What's
- 38:57Speaker 1: your favorite restaurant you've been talk been too so far
- 38:59Speaker 1: just in this country business. A restaurant that you that
- 39:05Speaker 1: you feature so far, not feature that just experienced they
- 39:08Speaker 1: want to go back. I mean I just moved to Houston. Okay,
- 39:14Speaker 1: now you know from Houston that Ryan alright, now you're
- 39:17Speaker 1: my counting now Okay, Yeah, I went to Houston and
- 39:22Speaker 1: like one of my favorite spats I was here was
- 39:24Speaker 1: called crab Kings. I know, Craft Kings, seventeen thousand views.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I saw that episode that you had on the seventeen
- 39:30Speaker 1: thousand views. Yeah, that that restaurant was at a high level.
- 39:36Speaker 1: The food, the quality, you know, the how they were
- 39:40Speaker 1: running their business, you know, running the run of the businesses.
- 39:44Speaker 1: It's just as important. That's how good the food is.
- 39:46Speaker 1: To some people forget that. But the way everything was
- 39:50Speaker 1: orchestrated over there was at a high level. So that
- 39:53Speaker 1: was one of my favorite favorite restaurants. Well, let me
- 39:56Speaker 1: tell you something. My nephew he has a Big six Barbecue.
- 40:00Speaker 1: It's on Highway six. I kid you, not the best
- 40:04Speaker 1: barbecue in the country. You gotta go by called Big
- 40:08Speaker 1: six Barbecue or as a side trailer is on Highway six.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Even barbecue for the Texas football team during the summer.
- 40:17Speaker 1: But these are these hidden gyms that you're talking about.
- 40:19Speaker 1: But if you're in Houston, I want to talk to
- 40:21Speaker 1: you some more because of the fact that I like
- 40:23Speaker 1: your idea, I like your concept because I would tell
- 40:26Speaker 1: you this. I saw the that the Crab interview and
- 40:30Speaker 1: you have You're more hyper and you're more more are
- 40:34Speaker 1: animated in that video than you were in your other videos.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And that videos is is really I thought, captured more
- 40:40Speaker 1: of your personality and one of your one of your
- 40:43Speaker 1: biggest views view view videos on your site. So I
- 40:48Speaker 1: want to thank you for coming on the show man

- 42:15Speaker 1: He's coming in through the door. A man. Uh, we'll
- 42:18Speaker 1: talk about success. Uh the show or money making conversation
- 42:22Speaker 1: that I put together with our producers. I don't do
- 42:25Speaker 1: this show by myself. I learned that the hardware that
- 42:29Speaker 1: to try to achieve a greame, a dream, or your
- 42:32Speaker 1: goals by yourself are impossible. Even an athlete, the athlete
- 42:36Speaker 1: has to have the support system. If your scholar, you
- 42:39Speaker 1: gotta have a group of people that you study with.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Always know that success achieved by yourself, well it's not
- 42:47Speaker 1: long term. You've gotta be able to integrate people into
- 42:50Speaker 1: your life to be able to support you doing those
- 42:53Speaker 1: down moments, to be able to help you when you're
- 42:56Speaker 1: building a brand or building a lifestyle that will take
- 42:58Speaker 1: you to the next level. That's what I'm about. I'm about.
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm about understanding that the values that I have on
- 43:04Speaker 1: that I've achieved over the years. That's why I always
- 43:07Speaker 1: tell people if you want to be successful, if you're
- 43:08Speaker 1: trying to be successful, understand that what you learned your
- 43:12Speaker 1: twenties is what's gonna enable you to make money. Today.
- 43:16Speaker 1: My next guest has just arrived. He's as Natalie dressed
- 43:19Speaker 1: as I am. About to say something of him, boy
- 43:22Speaker 1: me and he got the same Taylor here, Tequillo Spikes
- 43:26Speaker 1: has made it up and come on down. He got
- 43:28Speaker 1: his hair combed and everything. Man making money. But let
- 43:31Speaker 1: me introduce you before you just started talking up in here.
- 43:33Speaker 1: I like that too, because that's my color right there. Yeah,
- 43:37Speaker 1: that's right. Now we're gonna we're gonna talk for you color.
- 43:39Speaker 1: We're gonna talk up. My next guest was drafted in
- 43:41Speaker 1: the first round. Taste. I'm big fan, um so I
- 43:44Speaker 1: just man crush a lot of people on the football field.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Uh at this point, a lot of people, don't they
- 43:49Speaker 1: about to make first down? He stopped him thirty thirty
- 43:54Speaker 1: pick overall pick by the assist in their bankers and
- 43:57Speaker 1: their teen they need. He was a two time All
- 43:58Speaker 1: Pro or two time Pro Bowls selection. Is one of
- 44:00Speaker 1: only seven linebackers in league history with more than two
- 44:03Speaker 1: hundred starts. While playing with the Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Philadephe
- 44:07Speaker 1: Eagles everces for Far the Out and San Diego Charges,
- 44:11Speaker 1: he was native captain. I love this about leadership of
- 44:13Speaker 1: the fifteen seasons. He was captain thirteen times. That says
- 44:17Speaker 1: a lot. That's why I wanted you to bring it
- 44:18Speaker 1: on the show. A true testament about your leadership and
- 44:21Speaker 1: the qualities you have. And also I wanted to mention
- 44:24Speaker 1: this he Uh. Post retirement, he's putting a emphasis on education,
- 44:28Speaker 1: finishing his bachelor's degree in Liberal arts at Auburn and
- 44:31Speaker 1: the December sixteen earned his NBA from the university. I
- 44:35Speaker 1: am Miami. Please welcome to money making conversations to kill spikes,
- 44:40Speaker 1: my man or that voice, that voice, making money with
- 44:45Speaker 1: that voice, making money with it, the presidents, everything everything
- 44:49Speaker 1: that comes with it. Well, let me talk about it.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I got your book here. It's uh, it's called the Mask.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Now behind the Mask. First of all, you are helm
- 44:58Speaker 1: with all your life. Now you say the mask, is
- 45:01Speaker 1: there any reference there are helmet mask or you just
- 45:04Speaker 1: mask me something else? Yeah, it was I came up
- 45:08Speaker 1: with the title just thinking about every day people. We
- 45:10Speaker 1: used to say, you know what, um, I know what
- 45:13Speaker 1: you look like. But when we look at the rest
- 45:16Speaker 1: of the guys, when we try to relate to a
- 45:18Speaker 1: lot of the guys who were playing the game, we
- 45:20Speaker 1: can't see you because of the mask. And so for me,
- 45:23Speaker 1: that kind of triggered something in my mind to say,
- 45:26Speaker 1: you know what, I want to go behind the mask.
- 45:29Speaker 1: That's the reason why I titled my book behind the Mask.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Because everybody has a story to be told, and regardless
- 45:36Speaker 1: of whatever chosen field endeavor that you're chasing, you have
- 45:40Speaker 1: a mask. And so that's why My book is titled
- 45:43Speaker 1: Behind the Mask because I wanted to go behind the
- 45:45Speaker 1: mask to figure out what makes you tick, what makes
- 45:48Speaker 1: you so different. So let's talk about this book, Man
- 45:50Speaker 1: the Mask. Uh. First of all, I'm a football nut,
- 45:54Speaker 1: you know, and in high school, junior high, they's called
- 45:56Speaker 1: me black high sale. And so when I see you
- 46:00Speaker 1: see Chuck ben Derrick, that's see to have that name
- 46:03Speaker 1: right there, and Dick La Bolt name in here right there.
- 46:06Speaker 1: That's that's some deep that's some legendary names right there.
- 46:10Speaker 1: And then you got Bobby Belle, Kansas City chief who
- 46:15Speaker 1: him and Willing and there said both of them boys,
- 46:16Speaker 1: simple tell you something important. This book is from an
- 46:19Speaker 1: African Americans perspective because she back in the day, you
- 46:23Speaker 1: knew that white players were only reserved for certain positions.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You know, middle linebacker you had to be white, center
- 46:31Speaker 1: you had to be white, and quarterback he had to
- 46:32Speaker 1: be quiet. So Willing there was my first, I'm gonna
- 46:36Speaker 1: tell you my first hero because he played that position.
- 46:40Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. So, no, the importance of
- 46:42Speaker 1: this book when you start, when you start lining up everybody,
- 46:45Speaker 1: when you start doing what you've done, you know, and
- 46:47Speaker 1: then you go Caneli has been at the Alabama Boy.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I forgive him. Books for State, Harry Carson, New York Giants,
- 46:55Speaker 1: Come On, London, Fletcher Washington, Reds Kids, Kevin Green, Carolina Path,
- 47:00Speaker 1: Ted the Stark, Rickey Jackson, New Orleans, the Mike Secretary,
- 47:08Speaker 1: The Eyes saw him yesterday. The eyes, though, brother, be
- 47:13Speaker 1: the eyes. And then you, why did you do this
- 47:19Speaker 1: book and why did you focus on linebackers? I focused
- 47:24Speaker 1: on linebackers because my concept of behind the Mask it
- 47:30Speaker 1: had no intentions of having these other cast members on,
- 47:33Speaker 1: these other great men, great leaders. But the more I
- 47:37Speaker 1: thought about it, and the more I saw a gap.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I think in anything that you do, money making conversations,
- 47:44Speaker 1: whenever you want to meet somebody, everybody has a need
- 47:47Speaker 1: and you have to find that need. And so the
- 47:49Speaker 1: need that I saw was when I was hearing their
- 47:52Speaker 1: stories told, and some of their stories being told, it
- 47:56Speaker 1: was either either diluted or it was not told to
- 48:00Speaker 1: the extent with the passion that it deserved. And so
- 48:03Speaker 1: for me, I was like, you know what this is
- 48:05Speaker 1: Not only will I share my story, I'm gonna go
- 48:07Speaker 1: around an interview every guy, and every linebacker comes from
- 48:11Speaker 1: a different decade, you talked about Willie Lanier knowing the
- 48:15Speaker 1: history of the game. This is not just a football book.
- 48:19Speaker 1: It's a book about leadership. It's a book about perseverance,
- 48:22Speaker 1: it's a book about discipline. And I picked a guy
- 48:25Speaker 1: out of very decade to share their story of how
- 48:28Speaker 1: did they become great? What made you an outlie? What
- 48:31Speaker 1: was that defining moment when you were a kid and
- 48:35Speaker 1: you said, you know what, I am going to sacrifice
- 48:38Speaker 1: everything for an idea or a dream that I have.
- 48:42Speaker 1: And I went, I visited every guy for a two
- 48:45Speaker 1: year time period, spent the day with them, and I
- 48:47Speaker 1: got their story of their defining moment. And so when
- 48:51Speaker 1: you look through the book and you read the stories,
- 48:53Speaker 1: the stories drives the images, and the images drives the story.
- 48:57Speaker 1: So I I just thought it was a great for
- 49:00Speaker 1: me to be able to not only share their story,
- 49:02Speaker 1: but allow them to be the author of their own autobiography. Well,
- 49:06Speaker 1: I think it's important that the story is important. Like
- 49:08Speaker 1: I was telling you, how each one of these stories
- 49:10Speaker 1: affected me or still affect me because of the fact
- 49:14Speaker 1: that you know, when you when you're going through life
- 49:16Speaker 1: man and you and it's different now, you know, because
- 49:19Speaker 1: they they can see social media. They see kids are
- 49:22Speaker 1: seeing people and they think that athletes had this or
- 49:25Speaker 1: this writer of passage all their lives, you know. And
- 49:27Speaker 1: sometimes and then there's certain things that happened. They check it.
- 49:30Speaker 1: You know, you're still the athlete, okay. And and when
- 49:34Speaker 1: I when I look at what you're doing with this book,
- 49:37Speaker 1: like you said, as different errors, when I when I
- 49:39Speaker 1: see they're Brooks, such a humble, humble person, you know
- 49:42Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And and the and the great Harry
- 49:44Speaker 1: Carston played with LT and the Giants, with those those
- 49:47Speaker 1: great giant teams and fletchers small compact or fearsome force.
- 49:52Speaker 1: When you look at all these linebackers, these great linebackers,
- 49:56Speaker 1: what do you fall athletically like I took a little
- 49:59Speaker 1: bit of this. I I symbolize this type of poissana
- 50:02Speaker 1: or this type of physicality when you start line up
- 50:06Speaker 1: these linebackers. When I look at every guy to me,
- 50:09Speaker 1: I split it down the middle one side, It's like
- 50:11Speaker 1: what traits do I see what they have? And how
- 50:15Speaker 1: can I incorporate that until my game? And you know,
- 50:20Speaker 1: I look at Chuck bay Nary. He was the last
- 50:23Speaker 1: of the sixty minute men, meaning he played both ways,
- 50:26Speaker 1: offense and the defensive side. Concrete Charlie was his nickname.
- 50:31Speaker 1: So for me, I wanted to be hard like Concrete Charlie.
- 50:35Speaker 1: You know, when I think about Mike Singletary, nobody ever
- 50:38Speaker 1: can recreate or try to. You know, well, they say,
- 50:43Speaker 1: uh impersonation is the best form of flattery, But Mike
- 50:48Speaker 1: sing for me, it took me to get like fierce
- 50:51Speaker 1: mad to even come close to his eyes. And I
- 50:54Speaker 1: still didn't accomplish that. But the intimidation factor of Mike
- 50:57Speaker 1: Singletary is what I really appreciated. Um I look at
- 51:01Speaker 1: Derrick Brooks. You know, a lot of people don't know,
- 51:05Speaker 1: but Derrick Brooks, how you say humble, reserve guy, but
- 51:08Speaker 1: his faith jumps out more than anything. And he didn't
- 51:12Speaker 1: care about necessarily football sports itself, but his family. His
- 51:16Speaker 1: faith was so strong that it led him to the
- 51:19Speaker 1: game of football, and that would really propel him to
- 51:22Speaker 1: be the Hall of Fame of that he is today.
- 51:24Speaker 1: So from all of those attributes that these guys had,
- 51:27Speaker 1: I kind of picked a little bit from everybody, and
- 51:29Speaker 1: you know, and and and it was very fun to
- 51:31Speaker 1: hear this story. I agree because I I the humbleness
- 51:35Speaker 1: that tone, Derrick Brookish. You know what I'm saying. I've
- 51:39Speaker 1: watched you play the physicality, that the sense of a center,
- 51:44Speaker 1: uh secretary all the way. But like I said, those
- 51:47Speaker 1: those magical eyes he had, you can't that was that
- 51:50Speaker 1: was God. Their lives with God given. You can't replace
- 51:52Speaker 1: those eyes. So I know we had a few minutes left.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I want to talk about this next book. You're gonna
- 51:56Speaker 1: write about these running backs right now. We're talking about
- 51:58Speaker 1: the Mass behind the Mask and the Linebacker edition. Now
- 52:02Speaker 1: you're gonna have a running back edition coming out. Running
- 52:06Speaker 1: Back Edition right now, here's my here's my all time
- 52:12Speaker 1: m Smith ad in it now. Eric Dickinson ain't in it. Man,
- 52:18Speaker 1: I'm messing up. I'm just thought thought kicking people to
- 52:21Speaker 1: the curve. You know. You know he's gotta start with
- 52:26Speaker 1: Jim Brown. They played listen, totally agreed. Twelve games. They're
