- 1:24Speaker 1: met this man, I'm gonna bring it up again. Uh.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I was UM producing and UH launched the Steve Harvard
- 1:32Speaker 1: Mentoring Camp and Dallas, Texas right outside of Dallas, Texas.
- 1:37Speaker 1: UH we would UH bring a hundred boars, a hundred
- 1:39Speaker 1: plus boys clomb up to the camp in Dallas in
- 1:43Speaker 1: a three day weekend where they would uh it was
- 1:46Speaker 1: single boys who were households would laid by single moms.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And he came in. He spoke that weekend's first time
- 1:53Speaker 1: I got to introduction to this young man and we
- 1:56Speaker 1: said down, I don't know if he remembers, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: he's running into a lot of people, but I've been
- 2:00Speaker 1: I've been getting Texas talking about his new career, motivational learning,
- 2:06Speaker 1: how to get your financial gain right. Let just get
- 2:08Speaker 1: these Texas on the regular basis. I told my Steff,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I say, hey, I'm getting these texts from freeway Rick
- 2:13Speaker 1: Ross about the motivational I said, I've seen this guys
- 2:16Speaker 1: in twelve. Can we get him on the show. So
- 2:19Speaker 1: my next guest is a prison reform activist, motivational speaker,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and entrepreneur. He served a total twenty years behind bars,
- 2:26Speaker 1: where six of the inmates are functionally irlliterate. He only
- 2:30Speaker 1: served fourteen years of a life sentence. Today he speaks
- 2:33Speaker 1: about the power of literacy wherever he goes. Please work
- 2:36Speaker 1: with the money making conversation Freeway Rick Ross. I know
- 2:44Speaker 1: you don't remember it, Freeway. You know, I know you
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't remember it, but man, I tell you it was
- 2:48Speaker 1: very enlightened when I met you, because, uh, you know
- 2:52Speaker 1: you you were still finding yourself, you know, uh in
- 2:54Speaker 1: regard to what was your path if I'm speaking, but
- 2:57Speaker 1: you you remember absolutely I remember because you know you
- 3:02Speaker 1: was angry. Uh you know you know and uh you
- 3:06Speaker 1: was uh and I won't I won't say confused, but
- 3:08Speaker 1: you know, you know, like I said, that was like
- 3:10Speaker 1: roughly three years from your from you being released from prison,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and you were there to talk to these young men
- 3:16Speaker 1: and you know, let them know the options there are.
- 3:18Speaker 1: There are a lot of options out there, but the
- 3:20Speaker 1: one option you're trying to get them to understand is
- 3:22Speaker 1: that not your option. Correct. And I was going through
- 3:26Speaker 1: a lot of stuff too. You know, I don't know
- 3:28Speaker 1: if you saw the documentary on Netflix, but my documentary
- 3:31Speaker 1: on Netflix right now, because I'm one documentary on Netflix. Well,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you know I saw that you're talking a freeway cracking
- 3:37Speaker 1: the system. Yeah, I saw. I saw. Let's talk about
- 3:41Speaker 1: that a little bit because I saw it, uh so
- 3:44Speaker 1: twice because you know, when you run into people and
- 3:47Speaker 1: you meet people, you know, I got to see I.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I got to see the real person and you I
- 3:51Speaker 1: got to see you, uh talk about some stuff where
- 3:55Speaker 1: you were trying to take your life. And then I
- 3:57Speaker 1: see this documentary because when I saw it, it was
- 3:59Speaker 1: kind of like the I wouldn't say and you can
- 4:01Speaker 1: stop me. It was like four four parts to me.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It was the early part, you know, when you was
- 4:06Speaker 1: trying to be attended. It was just like a typical
- 4:07Speaker 1: teenager going through life. You know, you was a very
- 4:10Speaker 1: talented tennis player. And then when you try to go
- 4:13Speaker 1: to the next day in life, you know, you had
- 4:14Speaker 1: to admit that you were illiterate. You could read, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: that changed the course of your life. And then and
- 4:20Speaker 1: then the streatment and then the street part. Then the
- 4:23Speaker 1: second part was the you know, how do I how
- 4:26Speaker 1: do I make money? And that's when the that's when
- 4:28Speaker 1: the drug dealing start. And then the third part is
- 4:31Speaker 1: when you really became a big time drug dealer. And
- 4:34Speaker 1: then the fourth part is like when you got out
- 4:37Speaker 1: of prison, what do I do? What do I? What
- 4:39Speaker 1: do I do with my life now? And and the
- 4:41Speaker 1: I guess you could say the the, the the the
- 4:45Speaker 1: the lifestyle consequences, it's what you live in the fourth
- 4:49Speaker 1: part on and and and I thought it very powerful.
- 4:52Speaker 1: What do you what is your take on it? Yeah?
- 4:55Speaker 1: I mean you you you hit it right on the head,
- 4:56Speaker 1: you know. And and and that lad part, like you
- 4:58Speaker 1: were saying, I have to deal with how do you
- 5:00Speaker 1: deal with not having the resources that you once had?
- 5:04Speaker 1: And and I don't know if you saw the documentary.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I mean, I know you saw the documentary, but it
- 5:10Speaker 1: was a part in there where they came and they
- 5:13Speaker 1: put me and my mom out of her house. Absolutely
- 5:16Speaker 1: absolutely that was fraud, mortgage fraud. I was also dealing
- 5:21Speaker 1: with homelessness, sir. You know, I mean pretty much what
- 5:25Speaker 1: most of Black America is going through right now. You know, Uh,
- 5:28Speaker 1: Black America is having a really really hard time of
- 5:32Speaker 1: uh quoting with everything that's going on now. When I
- 5:38Speaker 1: bring this up to say that, you know, um, you
- 5:41Speaker 1: know you you we talked about you know, Narcos is
- 5:44Speaker 1: a very popular ship series on Netflix, and look at
- 5:48Speaker 1: your lifestyle and none of it ever ends positive, by
- 5:51Speaker 1: the way, And that's that's something we all need to
- 5:54Speaker 1: get clear about that. What happens to the money? You know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: because you you talk about making almost million dollars a
- 6:00Speaker 1: day the government stay you generated was six million dollars
- 6:03Speaker 1: of uh with your drug drug sales. What happens to
- 6:07Speaker 1: the money? Where did he go? What? What? You know?
- 6:10Speaker 1: You know what Mom always says, a fool and his
- 6:13Speaker 1: money was so on the part and uh and she
- 6:17Speaker 1: was telling the true literally you know, how to it was.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And I got to experience that even though I had
- 6:24Speaker 1: learned how to make money selling drugs, I didn't learn
- 6:28Speaker 1: how to keep the money and and and and that's
- 6:31Speaker 1: something that that we all have to deal with as
- 6:34Speaker 1: as a race and as a society. You know, how
- 6:37Speaker 1: do we keep the money that we make at any level,
- 6:40Speaker 1: whether it's drug dealing or whether it's just you work
- 6:42Speaker 1: at a regular job or yourn entrepreneur, basketball players, basketball players, boxers,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, we see them all, uh get money and
- 6:50Speaker 1: then and then they wind up broke. Uh. And the
- 6:53Speaker 1: reason for that is because you know, money don't come
- 6:56Speaker 1: with instructions. And I that's why I started Money Making Conference, Rick,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you, because of the fact that
- 7:03Speaker 1: in my lifestyle, in entertainment especially, you can get here
- 7:06Speaker 1: with a large summer money. You know, then also you
- 7:08Speaker 1: can go down and you can hit with another laws
- 7:11Speaker 1: cut the money. What do you do when you get
- 7:12Speaker 1: that large sum of money to keep your career moving along?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Or do you floss? You know? Do you just shine
- 7:18Speaker 1: like you're doing good? Like when you're spending money you
- 7:20Speaker 1: shouldn't be spending. And a lot of times that's what
- 7:22Speaker 1: happens in life. And so when I talk to individuals
- 7:25Speaker 1: where in your situation unique because you you you made
- 7:27Speaker 1: your money illegally, but when you when you did it,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you you spent it. And then by not planning quote
- 7:35Speaker 1: unquote planning, but when you might not have it, you're
- 7:37Speaker 1: a zero. And that consequences of going from first class
- 7:41Speaker 1: the bottom class is tremendously saddening. And that's the guy
- 7:45Speaker 1: I met and Steve Harvard mentary cap back in twelve. Now,
- 7:49Speaker 1: let's we're talking about that a little bit, so I
- 7:52Speaker 1: can just let everybody know this is this is an
- 7:53Speaker 1: uplifting interview. By the way, I just needed to be
- 7:56Speaker 1: able to let everybody know your backstory so we can
- 7:58Speaker 1: know where we're trying to do on this interview you
- 8:00Speaker 1: because of the fact that what you did that camp,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I believe you change some lives. I believe you stop
- 8:05Speaker 1: some people from making stupid mistakes at a very young age. Well,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, I think I think I'm changing lives right
- 8:10Speaker 1: now every single day. You know, I'm in New York.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Right now, I'll be speaking to day here in New York,
- 8:16Speaker 1: UH to a private uh business group. You know, it's
- 8:19Speaker 1: amazing that I'm getting an opportunity now. I just left Baltimore, uh,
- 8:25Speaker 1: I think four days ago, and I spoke to a
- 8:28Speaker 1: group of men who and women who their business average
- 8:32Speaker 1: two people, two hundred employees. So it was pretty big, uh,
- 8:36Speaker 1: the big, pretty big company. And to see that I'm
- 8:39Speaker 1: able to go in and speak to groups of that
- 8:42Speaker 1: magnitude and to touch them and to explain to them. Uh.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Some of the things that I'm trying to explain to uh,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the everyday person walking the street is that we can
- 8:54Speaker 1: uh grow if we do the right things. Okay, we're
- 8:59Speaker 1: gonna go to a rake. But Rick, when we come back,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I want you to catch us up on Cornell what
- 9:03Speaker 1: he's doing. Norm See. I saw that song. I saw
- 9:08Speaker 1: it that you know, my god, Yeah, because because you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: Cornell was really special in that and because he got it,
- 9:16Speaker 1: he caught on real fast that he was doing wrong.
- 9:18Speaker 1: He got that fast and uh, and he's doing Cornell
- 9:22Speaker 1: was one of the the lucky ones. Cornell I never went
- 9:24Speaker 1: to president. Yeah, and we were right and we talked
- 9:26Speaker 1: more with Freeway Rick Ross about his future and what
- 9:29Speaker 1: he's doing to change lives after a devastating career as
- 9:32Speaker 1: a drug dealer. Hi. Just for Sean McDonald listening to
- 9:38Speaker 1: one of you. Listen to Money Making Conversations, a very
- 9:40Speaker 1: popular show that you can find on serious extent chie
- 9:43Speaker 1: on one forty one and one forty two and our
- 9:45Speaker 1: Heart Radio and Apple podcast on the phone is I
- 9:48Speaker 1: gotta give the title of renowned drug dealer Freeway Rick Ross,
- 9:51Speaker 1: who harfersted millions as an unknown participant of Central Intelligence
- 9:56Speaker 1: when you see and US Drug Enforcement Agency operatives who
- 9:59Speaker 1: provided him with limited amounts of cocaine. It was said
- 10:02Speaker 1: that his suppliers used the profits to pay for c
- 10:05Speaker 1: I a spawn contra war against Nick Arwood leftist governments
- 10:09Speaker 1: in the eighteen eighties. I saw that I watched the
- 10:12Speaker 1: trial or the position given by all of the North,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and I went, that guy gonna get off because he
- 10:18Speaker 1: was sitting up there with that suit, don't looking like
- 10:20Speaker 1: he was trying to save the country. And you found
- 10:22Speaker 1: yourself in the midst of all that. And I didn't
- 10:24Speaker 1: even know it, did you, Freeway? I didn't. I didn't,
- 10:28Speaker 1: But you know what to trying let's let's he could
- 10:31Speaker 1: have really believed and he was trying to say the country.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I mean, sometimes we get ourselves twisted and and and
- 10:37Speaker 1: thinking that we can believe that we're doing right even
- 10:40Speaker 1: though we're doing wrong. Now, a lot of people to
- 10:43Speaker 1: say that you're doing a lot of wrong selling dry
- 10:45Speaker 1: ups in the community. At the first one to tell you,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but but but but we we make those kind of
- 10:52Speaker 1: mistakes as human being. Absolutely so. Uh. You know the
- 10:56Speaker 1: first thing I thought saw this serious, like I gotta
- 10:58Speaker 1: I gotta find out what they're doing. And now Cornell,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know, good looking guy, former football player man I said,
- 11:04Speaker 1: Cornell could have been like on any movie. He could
- 11:07Speaker 1: have been an actor, good looking guy, got hurt football
- 11:11Speaker 1: player and then he got into the drug game with you. Yeah,
- 11:14Speaker 1: Cornell is running one of the biggest anti gang uh
- 11:19Speaker 1: organizations in the country. He's running a company called Unity One. Uh. Uh.
- 11:25Speaker 1: He was working with Pete Carroll from from US when
- 11:27Speaker 1: Pete Carroll was at USC. They they started it and uh,
- 11:31Speaker 1: he's doing pretty good right now. Okay, cool. Then you
- 11:33Speaker 1: have Norm who works with the Jim Brown a mayor
- 11:36Speaker 1: I CAM program, which is a really good program out
- 11:38Speaker 1: of l A. What is he into Norman's Norman is
- 11:41Speaker 1: doing as well? Uh. Norman is in the cannabis industry,
- 11:46Speaker 1: the legal cannabis industry, and in California, you know it's legal,
- 11:51Speaker 1: it's legal in Canty now. So so he's been too that. Um,
- 11:55Speaker 1: who else did you say, Ali, Ali spen seven and
- 11:58Speaker 1: a half in jail. Now, Ali was the coolest looking
- 12:01Speaker 1: one in the documentary and in shades are said Ali
- 12:04Speaker 1: still hanging in there? What is he was my partner
- 12:07Speaker 1: We started getting out together, so he was he was
- 12:11Speaker 1: my my actual partner. We started together. Uh he's selling
- 12:15Speaker 1: cars now cool? And then and then also you had uh,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you're your woman down with you Maryland who ally also
- 12:23Speaker 1: had a daughter with her. So what did she into them?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Rylands driving buses for uh, for the m p A
- 12:30Speaker 1: for the bus system, city buses. So let me ask
- 12:33Speaker 1: you this. So this special comes out, the special comes
- 12:36Speaker 1: out freeway Cracking the System? Does it? Did it affect
- 12:39Speaker 1: their lives? Negatively or positively? That that special came out?
- 12:43Speaker 1: It's about you, but all of them were affected by it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Tell me about that. Well, some of the history came
- 12:48Speaker 1: out that people didn't really know about them because you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: they were really young when when they got into the
- 12:52Speaker 1: business and they didn't go they didn't go to jail.
- 12:56Speaker 1: They wasn't in the newspapers. Uh, So nobody really knew
- 12:59Speaker 1: that background until intil the documentary came out. And someone
- 13:04Speaker 1: was a little was a little worried about their background, meaning,
- 13:08Speaker 1: but I assured them that, uh, what we were gonna
- 13:12Speaker 1: be doing was gonna be educating so many millions of
- 13:15Speaker 1: people that uh, that it was worth taking the risk. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's what I got. That that's that's important to say
- 13:20Speaker 1: that because, like I said, because you can do this
- 13:23Speaker 1: and it can be like self promoting, self hype. You know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I'm the man, and I was really because you know what,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that that that came across
- 13:30Speaker 1: that this is this is a lifestyle at the highest
- 13:32Speaker 1: level that you participated in and it was wrong. And
- 13:35Speaker 1: now what are you doing now when you when you're
- 13:38Speaker 1: going to like you did with Steve Harrid's mentory camp,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you know, speaking to these young people because of the
- 13:43Speaker 1: fact that, hey, man, you did it and you made money.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Now you're living in consequences. What what is the most
- 13:50Speaker 1: what are the key strategy of the key terms that
- 13:53Speaker 1: you try to get out when you speak to young people. Well,
- 13:56Speaker 1: one of the most important things is to be a
- 13:58Speaker 1: critical thinker. I like that I was critical thinking, but
- 14:04Speaker 1: only to a certain extent. You know, I stopped you.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I critically thought enough to figure out how to get
- 14:10Speaker 1: into the drug business and make some money. But I
- 14:13Speaker 1: wasn't thinking critically enough to know that I was gonna
- 14:15Speaker 1: be getting a life sentence without the postulary co role
- 14:17Speaker 1: and that I was taking a chance on spending the
- 14:20Speaker 1: rest of my life in prisons. Um, now, let's just
- 14:24Speaker 1: let's talk about that though. Let's talk about that because
- 14:27Speaker 1: life sentence. Your mom fell out in court. The other
- 14:30Speaker 1: boy he just got seven and a half years, and
- 14:33Speaker 1: you're walking around after getting a life sentence. This is
- 14:37Speaker 1: important because I always tell people education is the key.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It's the separating line between what you're doing do something
- 14:43Speaker 1: in life, or you're not gonna do something in life.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You educated yourself in jail and that was the turning
- 14:48Speaker 1: point in your life, which also led to you getting
- 14:50Speaker 1: out of jail. Correct. Correct, And it means to what
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm doing right now, you know with what Without me
- 14:56Speaker 1: learning how to read and educating myself, I never would
- 14:59Speaker 1: have found it issue that eventually got me out of prison,
- 15:02Speaker 1: and I never would have educated myself to to where
- 15:05Speaker 1: I am now. I don't have a college degree nor
- 15:07Speaker 1: a high school the puma, but I read over three
- 15:09Speaker 1: hundred books. So what what what I say is that
- 15:12Speaker 1: I have the skills to do the job, but without
- 15:15Speaker 1: the degree. But you have people listening to you. That's
- 15:19Speaker 1: more important, and that's important. That's why, that's why I
- 15:21Speaker 1: have you on my show Money Making Conversation. You know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: college campuses will hear this because I know what I'm doing,
- 15:29Speaker 1: so you can you can have a degree and not
- 15:31Speaker 1: know what you do. You know a lot of people
- 15:32Speaker 1: they go to school and they go to school like
- 15:34Speaker 1: I went to school. They just go to class and
- 15:36Speaker 1: participate in class, but they don't learn the lessons. And
- 15:41Speaker 1: what I found out now is that we have to
- 15:43Speaker 1: learn the lessons and that the lessons is the most invaluable,
- 15:46Speaker 1: the most valuable things. It's not the degree. Degree is
- 15:49Speaker 1: not really valuable if you don't know what you're doing,
- 15:51Speaker 1: because there's only a matter of time before before people
- 15:53Speaker 1: figure you out and find out that that you're not
- 15:56Speaker 1: who you say, right right. I always tell people your
- 15:59Speaker 1: resume that there's a truth resume and there's a hype resume.
- 16:03Speaker 1: The hype resume. They're actually gonna find out the truth
- 16:05Speaker 1: about that hype resume. The truth resume, it will stand
- 16:09Speaker 1: its ground. Now, you want to talk about how to
- 16:12Speaker 1: build wealth, financial wealth, That was a question that was
- 16:15Speaker 1: submitted as part of the things I should ask you.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Let's talk about that. How do you build for natural wealth? Well,
- 16:20Speaker 1: you know, one of the most important things is that
- 16:22Speaker 1: you have to learn what it is that you're doing.
- 16:25Speaker 1: The first thing you have to constantly look to improve
- 16:29Speaker 1: your ability to to make money. That means every every
- 16:34Speaker 1: single day, you have to improve yourself become better. It's
- 16:37Speaker 1: like an athlete. If if you're athlete and and you
- 16:40Speaker 1: don't make the lead, and the first thing I would
- 16:42Speaker 1: do is go and start doing push ups. I will
- 16:44Speaker 1: start running more, I would start exercising boards. Well, in business,
- 16:48Speaker 1: if you don't make the cut, then you have to
- 16:50Speaker 1: study harder. You have to learn more marketing skills. You
- 16:53Speaker 1: have to find out what your competition is doing. Basically
- 16:56Speaker 1: the same skill that I shoot the sales drugs. I'm
- 16:58Speaker 1: now you think to to to to do my entrepreneur stuff,
- 17:02Speaker 1: And I don't want to tell you about some of
- 17:04Speaker 1: the dreams I've been having. It if I people would
- 17:06Speaker 1: think I'm crazy. No no, no, no no no. That's
- 17:08Speaker 1: why You're on this show because you're not crazy. Because
- 17:11Speaker 1: because I'm telling you it's true. Because I tell people
- 17:14Speaker 1: all the time. Is that is that I come from
- 17:16Speaker 1: fearth ward. I come from that that that life I
- 17:19Speaker 1: just you know, I had the fortunate ability to teachers
- 17:22Speaker 1: kept me straight, you know, they told me go to class,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and so I went to I went to class, and
- 17:26Speaker 1: I went to college, and people in college telling me
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm special and telling I got a math degree, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: then I got then I gotta started working for IBM.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So I know there's always that farking the road. And
- 17:36Speaker 1: I always know that decisions are made and guided by
- 17:38Speaker 1: people who are pushing you, either negatively or positively. Okay,
- 17:43Speaker 1: And and in my case, positivity warn't out over negativity
- 17:47Speaker 1: because in the end people underhear me very clear. To
- 17:51Speaker 1: be successful in a positive lane is always harder. It's
- 17:55Speaker 1: always hard, but in the end the success ratio will
- 17:59Speaker 1: be a lot of fire. If you try to go easy,
- 18:02Speaker 1: then guess what, it's fast. They're gonna come get you.
- 18:04Speaker 1: They're gonna come get you, and the consequences can determine
- 18:07Speaker 1: your life. Really easy. It ain't really easy either. They
- 18:11Speaker 1: think it easy. But if you want to be if
- 18:13Speaker 1: you want to be where I was, it's a tough.
- 18:15Speaker 1: It's a tough way to go, that's the truth. Just
- 18:17Speaker 1: spoke though, So again I'm hype. I just reality. You spoke. Okay, Yeah,

- 18:34Speaker 1: some Rick looking at her. I would just let you
- 18:36Speaker 1: know this about yourself. Is that uh you know the
- 18:39Speaker 1: fact that I'm getting texts about you on my phone.

- 18:44Speaker 1: your brand. You're doing some smart things. I want to
