- 0:00Hey, everybody, Hello, hello. Welcome back to the Lila Rose
- 0:04show. We are going live here and I've
- 0:07got my brother in studio today, Mr. Paul Rose of Sing the Hours.
- 0:12Some of you might have sung with him online.
- 0:14He sings with, I think hundreds of thousands of people now
- 0:17online his his songs. So we might actually sing today.
- 0:21But we're talking all things Lent and suffering, ashes,
- 0:25skulls, death, the resurrection, all the good things.
- 0:31OK, Paul, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:33Thanks for having me. It's great to be here with all
- 0:36of you and Paul. Paul, we went through this.
- 0:39You just talked to me. You don't have to.
- 0:40Look so weird you were just looking at your camera.
- 0:42That is true. OK, you can do the.
- 0:44Double standard. This is what sibling life is.
- 0:46To be a younger brother is to be held to a different standard
- 0:49than your your elder sibling lent.
- 0:54Lent. Happy Lent, which is a weird
- 0:56thing to say. I was actually thinking it would
- 0:57be a good crossword prompt to be like ironic holiday greeting on
- 1:03Ash Wednesday would be happy Ash Wednesday.
- 1:05You know it's an ironic holiday greeting.
- 1:07So last night we were doing the Crossword New York Times
- 1:11crossword puzzle, which literally was giving me a
- 1:14headache. You had a.
- 1:16Headache before. I arrived, I did.
- 1:18That is true. That's not that is no lie
- 1:19detected. I did have a a headache before
- 1:21doing the crossword puzzle, but I like Wordle.
- 1:24If I'm going to do one of those little online things, Wordle is
- 1:27my go. But on the crossword, there was
- 1:30actually our hometown yesterday, Bari was one of the answers.
- 1:34And we're going to talk a little bit about the province
- 1:36provincially body where our ancestors are from, because
- 1:41there's a famous mass execution that happened there.
- 1:44And since we're talking about death and skulls, I think it's a
- 1:47great place to start. What do you think?
- 1:50There's a town called Otranto, and it's celebrated in Italian
- 1:53culture because it's known as one of the most heroic actions
- 1:58that kept the Italian peninsula ever from being conquered by the
- 2:02Eastern powers, by the whatever they were at that time.
- 2:06The Ottomans, I think it was in that century, the 15th century.
- 2:09So the Ottomans had a plan to just take over all of Italy.
- 2:12So they landed in Otranto, which is right across the Adriatic.
- 2:14It's like 14 fifties. Harrison, can you Fact Check us?
- 2:17Nice. So we're talking about the
- 2:21history of this. Yeah, Otranto.
- 2:24This beautiful church in Bari and why they have skulls at.
- 2:27You want to pull up the picture? Actually, yeah.
- 2:28Harris, come on, man. Harris is doing his hardest job
- 2:31right now. Pull up all of the skulls so.
- 2:34There's an altar that has the real skulls of the martyr 'cause
- 2:36they were all beheaded. So this is the most beautiful
- 2:38church, the most. It's a very beautiful church in
- 2:41Bari, Italy, which is where my brother and I.
- 2:43Are in Otranto which is South of Bari.
- 2:45It's in the same. Old region, but we are not from
- 2:48Italy directly, but we are third generation Italian.
- 2:50Although I'm a dual citizen. And my brother is now a dual
- 2:52citizen of Italy. I'm working on my dual
- 2:54citizenship. Anyways, you were just in Italy,
- 2:56so you saw this church and there's skulls.
- 2:59Are they actual human skulls? Yeah, it's those.
- 3:01Those are the actual relic human skulls.
- 3:03Those are the. Are we pulling it up?
- 3:04Yeah. Wait, they're the relics of the
- 3:05martyrs? Yeah, those that is, those are
- 3:07the martyrs. They were, they were mass
- 3:09actually crazy. There were like 20,000 people in
- 3:10the town. They killed every man, They
- 3:13killed every. Man, sorry, I'm sorry I'm
- 3:15interrupting so much but back up.
- 3:16So this is 14 hundreds Ottoman Turks Muslim.
- 3:20They, they decided against the Christians.
- 3:22They, they decided, you know what, once and for all, we're
- 3:23going to take over the entire peninsula of Italy.
- 3:26So they landed with a massive invasion force in Otranto.
- 3:30Valiant defense, but every single man was slain.
- 3:34This was only like 500 years ago.
- 3:36They murdered every single man. How many?
- 3:38Were. There 12,000 were killed.
- 3:39There were like 20,000 in the town and they killed every man
- 3:42and the rest they put into slavery.
- 3:44Crazy. And they, they, they, they
- 3:47heroically at the sword point, they said, you got to deny your
- 3:50faith that we're going to behead you.
- 3:52They, they gathered a bunch of women and children and men and
- 3:54etcetera. And then they just killed the
- 3:56hundreds of people and all their relics are in an altar on
- 4:00display. So.
- 4:01How many schools are there total in this church?
- 4:04I don't know. We'd have to.
- 4:05And so a lot, but they were, these were Christians who did
- 4:09not refuse to deny their faith to the Ottoman Turks in the
- 4:121400s. And they were beheaded.
- 4:14And so they, their skulls were taken after what?
- 4:18At what point did the skulls end up in this church?
- 4:20Like this, they were exhumed and then because of course they're
- 4:23yeah, the, the Christians, they were put into a mass grave and
- 4:26then exhumed and the they were put on display because.
- 4:27They're considered martyrs. They're, yeah, they're martyrs.
- 4:29So they, they were beatified 1771, but then they were
- 4:33canonized actually in 2013. It's been, it was a recent thing
- 4:36that Pope Francis said, you know what?
- 4:38We need to make sure these people are in the, the universal
- 4:40calendar of, of martyrs. So that's a very, very holy
- 4:43place to visit if you're ever in, in Italy and you want to see
- 4:45the, the cathedral in Otranto. But why, why do we, I mean, it
- 4:50seems kind of macabre that we would put like AI mean that's
- 4:54just a bunch of human, human bones, skulls, and we put them
- 4:57on display as this like glorious thing.
- 4:59And of course Jesus is at the center in the Tabernacle there.
- 5:02But that's, that's what we, we Christians, we take, we take
- 5:06pride in those who pay the ultimate price because now those
- 5:10people have the hope of the, the, the resurrection,
- 5:13resurrection. And whenever I see like relics
- 5:15on display, I think, wow, this is going to be such a party on
- 5:19the day of resurrection because Christ will bring life to the
- 5:23mortal bodies just like that vision in the Old Testament.
- 5:26Christ will will bring life and those people will just be
- 5:28celebrating. It'll be a, a bustling place of,
- 5:31of party. I love that it'll be a, a giant
- 5:34Easter party in that church at the resurrection.
- 5:36That's where I want to be. I want to be in the Cathedral of
- 5:38O Toronto when all of those bones.
- 5:41At the resurrection of the. Body are in fleshed again Yeah,
- 5:43what happens? When someone's ashes are
- 5:45scattered or if their bodies are lost at sea or something, so at
- 5:49the resurrection of the body. The church does not permit the
- 5:52scattering of ashes. That's against the.
- 5:54But let's say it's a situation you can't help.
- 5:56The body is. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:57You know, there's a car, you know, air airplane crash over an
- 5:59ocean or something horrible. Like that God, God is supreme
- 6:02over all creation. He'll take, he'll take some
- 6:03matter, he'll he'll re. I don't know.
- 6:06I mean, that's a a, a a wonderful thought for the
- 6:10imagination. I mean, you don't know what.
- 6:12Do you mean of course I don't like we, we are, we are dust to
- 6:16dust. We are return.
- 6:17I mean, ultimately. Of course.
- 6:19Ultimately we're going to be re exhumed from the ashes anyway,
- 6:23which is why we do Ash Wednesday.
- 6:24It's a reminder like when the priests a couple days ago gave
- 6:26us our little crosses, he said. You are dust, and to dust you
- 6:30shall return. Do you when I so on this this
- 6:34year at Ash Wednesday, there was the, you know, everybody posting
- 6:39about Ash Wednesday, blessed Ash Wednesday, I posted a picture of
- 6:43my ashes online. A lot of people were posting
- 6:46pictures online of the ashes and there were some people who are
- 6:50saying things like this is exactly what you're not supposed
- 6:53to do because you're showing your piety, like go into the
- 6:55closet to pray. You know, Holy Scripture, Jesus
- 6:57talks about how we're to pray multiple occasions, but he's one
- 7:00of the scriptures says he's we're supposed to not do your
- 7:03prayers to be seen, but your prayers to be, you know,
- 7:06basically between you and God. Don't let anyone see.
- 7:10I think the principle there, I think that people misunderstand
- 7:12is a public witness of faith, like, you know, doing a public,
- 7:16you know, procession with the Eucharist or doing a public
- 7:20wearing of the cross, things like this.
- 7:21It's not to show piety as much as it just show, is it?
- 7:23It's to show devotion. What's your?
- 7:25Take on There are hundreds of millions of people that get
- 7:27their ashes on Nash Wednesday. There's nothing special or
- 7:30boastful or remarkable. Or about mine or.
- 7:35Braggadocious about my ashes. Didn't even look good.
- 7:38They were. The guy was just like Smash
- 7:40Smudge. Like that, I mean the people.
- 7:43Get uncomfortable like because we're like when we're so I think
- 7:46when people are very when we're very detached from like
- 7:48Christian tradition from hundreds of years ago in the
- 7:51modern world, especially if you've just encountered Christ
- 7:53or depending on how your like upbringing was with how you were
- 7:56raised, some of these things can seem pretty crazy to people.
- 7:59Why are you doing this? If you don't have your ashes, I
- 8:02mean, you must be really holy if you're never going to die and
- 8:04you know what I mean? Like if if if anything when it's
- 8:06such a universal Christian practice in the West, like to
- 8:10fail to go get your ashes I think is saying more than having
- 8:13the ashes by. The way we got to say hi to the
- 8:16chat. I'm sorry guys, in the chat.
- 8:17Thanks for being here. So I see Rosemary.
- 8:19Hey, Rosemary, thanks for joining.
- 8:21Paul. I don't know if you can see the
- 8:22chat, but you can see them on my computer.
- 8:23That's fine. Sips with Sarah is here.
- 8:25Hey Sips with Sarah. Sips with Sarah.
- 8:28Sips with Sarah saying blessed Lent Jade is saying that looks
- 8:32horrible. I Jade, are you talking about
- 8:34the the ashes on my forehead? Are you talking about the skulls
- 8:37in the church? Both of them, I think, you know,
- 8:40represent death. So you can say that that looks
- 8:43horrible. And then hey, John Henry.
- 8:44John Henry says Paul Rose's previous appearance rocked.
- 8:48Thank you, John Henry. I like.
- 8:50That John Henry, thanks for all your encouragement.
- 8:51He's always giving encouragement on the show.
- 8:53Seriously, it means a lot to me. Thank you so much.
- 8:55He's one of our favorites. He really is he's and I love the
- 8:57name. It's a great name.
- 8:59I think if you. Have any comments, by the way,
- 9:01we will keep an eye on this chat, you guys.
- 9:03So if you have comments about Lent or comments about any of
- 9:06the things we're going to be rambling about today, then throw
- 9:10that in the chat because we will be keeping an eye on it.
- 9:12I think one of the things about pennants is that when you do
- 9:17penances together as a community, that is the safeguard
- 9:21against like the sort of I'm so like, for example, for our
- 9:29evangelical brothers and sisters, there was a few years
- 9:31ago, it was one of the best ones we've ever had.
- 9:33It was during COVID and we had our little, I, I like to call it
- 9:36our little bubble. So I was living in Boston at the
- 9:38time and it's that kind of a like in, in, in Alston, great
- 9:42neighborhood. And we had a evangelical couple
- 9:46and we had a Catholic couple and a unmarried couple couple
- 9:50married couples, and we all agreed to do a like pretty
- 9:54traditional Lent together. We did no meat for the entirety
- 9:57of Lent. We did vegan on Wednesdays and
- 10:00Fridays we did vegan and no oil. So this is like an old, you
- 10:04know, this is this used to be kind of a universal thing.
- 10:06What I'm? Describing did you guys have any
- 10:07kids by the way or this was like pre kids?
- 10:09At the time, I think Jacob and Gina had their first kid at the
- 10:13time. And yeah, yeah, I, I think there
- 10:15were, there were, there were babies involved.
- 10:17But I, I don't. But for for just to know because
- 10:20a lot of. COVID memories are such a blur.
- 10:22I can't, it's just a, it's like a black hole in my memory.
- 10:25But I, I will say this that it was an incredible experience
- 10:27because we ended up eating like 5 meals a week together and we
- 10:33would, it was like the most beautiful community experience
- 10:35of Lent. And nobody was more special than
- 10:37the other. We all just did the same thing.
- 10:39So really, really marvelous, but the greatest thing about doing a
- 10:43Lent like that, for example, this, this, this Lent, I'm, I'm
- 10:47trying to do the no meat, no alcohol thing.
- 10:50But the the reason why it's great to do something like that,
- 10:53no meat and no alcohol is because it's almost for a
- 10:57selfish reason that I cannot wait to have the bombastic
- 11:01experience in Easter. We, we have my, my wife and I
- 11:05the last like five years. We, we, we do an Easter Sunday
- 11:07and an Easter Monday party because Easter Monday is a
- 11:09holiday in most Western countries, not in the United
- 11:11States because we we got to go right back to the office in the
- 11:14books. And hopefully if you're as with
- 11:17your episode the other day or was it today, the episode that
- 11:20dropped where you should be stay at home moms.
- 11:21Yeah. So in the twisted modern society
- 11:24where you go into the office and you leave your wife and you do
- 11:26that, then, you know, you, you got to go right back to the
- 11:29office on Easter Monday. But we always tried to get as
- 11:31many people as possible to, you know, just take a day off work.
- 11:34Do it, do it for the Lord. It's an octave in the Roman
- 11:36Catholic tradition. No, no, no, no for for Easter
- 11:39Monday. Oh, for Easter Monday.
- 11:40The first day of the Octave, because all 8 days are a holy
- 11:42day. It's a whole 8 day celebration
- 11:44of Easter. It's not just Easter Sunday.
- 11:46So our Easter Monday parties, we on average would have like 85
- 11:49lbs of meat and we we would eat it all.
- 11:51There'd be no leftovers. Oh, I've seen pictures of your
- 11:53of your Easter. And like kegs and I mean, we, we
- 11:57would be single singing Easter songs outside and like that day
- 12:01is way more special. Last year I didn't give up meat
- 12:03for Lent. We had our baby and we just did.
- 12:05We just, we couldn't handle it. And the Easter Monday party was
- 12:08not as special. To have all that meat and to
- 12:11celebrate Christ's resurrection. It's all the more spiritually
- 12:15fulfilling and and it's so much more meaningful if you go
- 12:19through the desert with Christ, if you join him in his forty
- 12:22days, because Christ before he started his ministry.
- 12:24This is where we get Lent, right?
- 12:25We get Lent because Christ spent 40 days in the desert.
- 12:27We get Lent also the early church said because he spent 40
- 12:30hours in the tomb. That's an old tradition.
- 12:32So for each hour he spent dead in the tomb, we die to ourselves
- 12:3640 days. And then in in the early church,
- 12:39it was just the the six week period.
- 12:41So it was six weeks of six days because they take Sundays off,
- 12:44right? Because Sundays are each
- 12:46resurrection day. Yeah, a lot of a lot of that, I
- 12:48think is another sort of like the ashes, like why are you
- 12:51wearing ashes? What's the biblical backing for
- 12:54ashes? There's also the question of why
- 12:56are you doing this Lent thing? What's the biblical backing for
- 12:59Lent? I mean, think about how many
- 13:00times in the Old Testament, like Jonah, when Jonah preached to
- 13:04Nineveh, the whole town put on sackcloth and ashes.
- 13:07So it's not even the animals, right.
- 13:09Like, like they the sign of ashes.
- 13:12Yeah. It's not a modern idea of like,
- 13:14piety. It's it's a public.
- 13:16We're all doing this. It's not like you are going to
- 13:19outdo everybody. There's so many examples in the
- 13:21Old Testament where the whole nation puts on ashes.
- 13:24And it used to be much more. It was probably pour ashes all
- 13:26over your head. We have a very, very, very, very
- 13:29modest way of doing it now, just a little cross and just for one
- 13:31day. But this, this idea of ashes, is
- 13:33to remember death, and also to remember that Christ died, but
- 13:36he rose again. Which is that's.
- 13:37Also why anybody can come and get ashes, right?
- 13:39Like you can be. And, and that's also, I remember
- 13:41last year, I don't remember who I was talking to, but someone
- 13:43was saying how their friend came with them to get ashes.
- 13:47And I think they were Muslim, they were another religion and
- 13:49they've just received ashes because it's the same idea of we
- 13:53will all die. We've all, you know, we all have
- 13:55sin and we all have wrongdoing. So we need to repent.
- 13:59Obviously what it meant to them to receive ashes will be
- 14:01different than maybe to the Christian, but the same idea is,
- 14:04is there, which is we need to be in touch with our weakness, our
- 14:09frailty and the fact that we can't even we know there's no
- 14:13way for us to overcome death as human beings.
- 14:16Like all the like bio tech that's happening right now.
- 14:19And you know, neural link and all of the stuff, you know, Elon
- 14:22Musk, some of his projects with neural link and everything to
- 14:24try to overcome our humanity and our mortality.
- 14:29It's, you know, there's, there's some arguments to be made.
- 14:31Well, maybe they're going to extend the human lifespan a
- 14:33certain degree, but this idea that.
- 14:34We give our account. Yeah.
- 14:35To what end? This idea that you can overcome
- 14:37death as a human being, I think is, is a, a fool's errand.
- 14:42We're not going to be able to overcome death or sin as a human
- 14:45being. Like how as we as how can we as
- 14:47human beings stop other people from doing something evil or
- 14:50fully stop ourselves from making the wrong decisions?
- 14:53And we are so finite. We're so mortal.
- 14:55So the ashes are, are a public reminder of I am immortal.
- 14:59I am a Sinner, you know, I need to repent.
- 15:02But there's also a lot of beauty in that because when we get in
- 15:04touch with how vulnerable and weak we are, then it it opens a
- 15:09space where we need a savior. We need a God who can save us.
- 15:12And that's where all the hope is, of course.
- 15:13Hope, Pope Gregory the Great was the one in the 5th century who
- 15:17made it a a proper 40 day fast in the West because we took
- 15:21Sundays off. So it was six, it was 36 days,
- 15:24but he, he actually said we need an Ash Wednesday because we need
- 15:27those extra, which is why the prayer tomorrow, which is an old
- 15:30prayer in the Roman Missal, the prayer is going to say as we
- 15:32begin this venerable Lent, because that prayer exists.
- 15:37So, so for Sunday, for the 1st Sunday of Lent, the prayer still
- 15:41is something like as we begin this, this sacred thing of Lent,
- 15:44blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And the reason why that is
- 15:47because it used to start on this on the Sunday, but then 1500
- 15:50years ago they extended it to the Wednesday.
- 15:51So it could be 40 days. But at the time, you know what
- 15:53he said about the 36 days, He says this is our tithe because
- 15:56the year is 365 days. So 10% of the year, just 10%, we
- 16:01are going to give alms more seriously.
- 16:05We are going to fast, we're going to deprive because God
- 16:08gives us so much. He feeds us throughout the year.
- 16:10We are going to take take 40 days and take fasting more
- 16:14seriously. We're going to take penance more
- 16:16seriously and we're going to take acts of charity more
- 16:19seriously. And I love that idea of, of the
- 16:20tide, you know, like of the time that we're given every year,
- 16:23what's what's 36 or now 40 days to remember Christ.
- 16:28In the desert were the early Christians.
- 16:30Do you know if the early Christians, you know, post
- 16:32Jesus's resurrection and ascension, were they doing, you
- 16:36know, a 36 day tithe of sorts before Easter?
- 16:39Like do you know when that sort of become started to become the
- 16:41tradition of the early Christian?
- 16:42So there's a lot of debate, I think, and I'm no expert in
- 16:44this, so you guys can all Fact Check, check me, Fact Check us.
- 16:47But I, I think there's, I think Lent is sort of an organic thing
- 16:51that was only possible because, as I said, it's a public thing.
- 16:54So I think we get more of a standardization of Lent when
- 16:57Christianity became publicly legal in the 4th century.
- 17:00I don't think that there's there's a firm and fast
- 17:05historical evidence that Lent was super widespread and that
- 17:08that might just be because of the lack of a lot of information
- 17:11about the underground church. Those schools we saw like the
- 17:15Christian religion was a catacomb religion for hundreds
- 17:18of years because there was wave of persecution after
- 17:20persecution. You don't really need a period
- 17:22of Lent to remember death if you're constantly on the run
- 17:26from the authorities and constantly in danger of being
- 17:28crucified. So evidence of Lent, it's it's
- 17:32all the more important for a society where we have religious
- 17:34freedom, where we have comfort, where we have food, where we
- 17:36have meat, where we have burger chains down the street.
- 17:40Lent, Lent is something to give us that momentum Mori that, that
- 17:45OG Christian concept, which is that we are a religion of the
- 17:51catacombs. We are a religion on the run.
- 17:53We are religion in exile. We are religion in our earthly
- 17:56pilgrimage looking for eternal, you know, happiness with God.
- 18:01And so I think, I think definitely we get universal
- 18:04standards for Lent by the 5th century.
- 18:06Definitely we get a 40 day period by the 8th century.
- 18:11But the the primitive Church is definitely something that I
- 18:13don't think there's a hard and fast historical proof of.
- 18:18Did you see the report recently about the Christians in the
- 18:22Democratic Republic of? Congo.
- 18:24Oh yeah, they were butchered. Yeah.
- 18:25And there was another report today about another wave of mass
- 18:29murders, men, women and children, Christians in the
- 18:31Congo. I mean, I just think about that
- 18:34and I think about the fact that here we are in the United States
- 18:36or in the West, and we have so much opportunity, so many
- 18:39opportunities, so much freedom. We have so many material goods,
- 18:44so much security, and then we have, we obviously we find
- 18:46plenty to complain about, you know, in the US like this is
- 18:49wrong. That's wrong, you know,
- 18:50politically or culturally or personally.
- 18:53But I just think about the fact that there's actually Christians
- 18:55who are being hunted right now in other countries and how would
- 18:59that should impact the way that we see Lent to?
- 19:03Yeah, it's a really good point. And it's not just solidarity
- 19:05because the, the, the soul and the body are intertwined.
- 19:09You are a soul and you are a body.
- 19:11You're not a soul in a body. You're a soul and a body.
- 19:14And the, the austerities we put our body through and, and, and
- 19:17everybody knows this because outside of a religious context,
- 19:20there's so much like personal development and there's, and
- 19:22people do diets. Like, why is it such a crazy
- 19:25thing to do a diet for God when we diet constantly as a culture,
- 19:31we're obsessed with different like juice cleanses and, you
- 19:35know, meat only diets and crazy things.
- 19:38And so it's it, it obviously speaks to a universal human
- 19:42instinct because we aren't just a soul in a body.
- 19:45We also have a body and our soul will take cues from the things
- 19:48we put our bodies through. And then also we have we have
- 19:50the example of Christ to himself ate nothing for 40 days in the
- 19:54desert under great temptation. And that's that's who we need to
- 19:59journey through this period with is Jesus Christ.
- 20:01We need to do it with him. What are you doing for Lent?
- 20:04This year I'm just doing I. Know by the way already, I'm
- 20:06just asking. For doing no no booze and no
- 20:08meat. No booze and no meat except fish
- 20:10on Sundays because I want to relax it on Sundays.
- 20:12So I'll do fish on Sundays and then I'm.
- 20:14Doing How are you doing your protein?
- 20:15What are you doing for protein? I don't, I don't know.
- 20:17It doesn't doesn't matter. I'm that's not my focus.
- 20:20I love cheese. Maybe I'll do some cheese.
- 20:23You know, cheese is great. Beans are wonderful.
- 20:25Look, my wife is half Mexican. We already have a lot of beans
- 20:28and so beans are beans are coming your baby.
- 20:31Is a bean. She's such a cute bean.
- 20:32Got. Such a cute baby.
- 20:34Paul has a very cute baby. We have baby girls that are both
- 20:37the same. They're the same age, give and
- 20:39take a few weeks. How?
- 20:40How old is Carmelita She's. Going to be 1.
- 20:42When? In a few days.
- 20:44OK, so she's a month older than a little over a month older than
- 20:47Gigi. Anyways, it's very, very fun.
- 20:49But I I like that. Yeah, I, I mean, for me for Lent
- 20:54this year, I'm going to be very, I'm going very simple.
- 20:56I mean, I'm still feeding Genevieve, I'm still
- 20:58breastfeeding. So I'm not doing any crazy
- 21:00fasting or anything like that, trying not to do sweets.
- 21:03But my goal is just to actually be faithful with my prayer at,
- 21:07at a dedicated time every day, my mental prayer because I, I
- 21:10realized it's so easy. I mean, this has been, it's so
- 21:13easy to be praying and, you know, have a good routine going.
- 21:18And then to fall off the bandwagon, you go on a trip or
- 21:21you get sick or you have other family issues or, you know, work
- 21:24stuff happening and then you just do not.
- 21:27Literally days go by and you still pray.
- 21:28Like you say a prayer in the morning.
- 21:29You might listen to the gospel readings for the day.
- 21:32You might, you know, say bedtime prayers with your family.
- 21:34You know, we pray a decade of the rosary night, but you don't
- 21:36have a dedicated time set aside to be the most important person
- 21:40in the world, which is God, who is God.
- 21:41He is the end all be all. And you don't have that time set
- 21:44aside and it does it matters. I mean, God is so generous and
- 21:48gracious. So I've gone sometimes days
- 21:50where I didn't have that set aside time and God still shows
- 21:52up. There's still graces, there's
- 21:54still opportunities to love and there's still communication of
- 21:56some kind. But having that time set aside
- 21:58for him is so essential. And the this is the other thing
- 22:03I've noticed the devil is so and also just our human frail flesh
- 22:08so widely like Satan does not want you to pray.
- 22:11Satan does not want you to have dedicated time set aside for
- 22:15God. He wants you to think you don't
- 22:16need to do that. It's not absolutely essential.
- 22:19Just you're busy do your stuff to your life, but and then it'll
- 22:23be hard. You'll like make a resolution.
- 22:24I'm going to pray today at 10:00 AM And this happened yesterday.
- 22:27I was like, I'm planning to do my 10:00 AM prayer time.
- 22:30And then I got this call, this e-mail, this text message
- 22:33emergency. You know, you were blowing up my
- 22:36phone. Just kidding.
- 22:36You're, you're fine. You were blowing up my phone.
- 22:38But you know all of these things.
- 22:40But you didn't answer. I didn't.
- 22:41Answer. But I was trying to do my thing
- 22:43and so anyways, what Paul was calling me about was what he was
- 22:46supposed to wear on Oh. Don't even do.
- 22:48Episodes today, which is very funny that that got into your
- 22:51head that you had to decide what to wear.
- 22:53And our mother told Paul that he should bring Blazers because it
- 22:57was a very professional podcast. And I was like, you didn't need
- 22:59to do that. But anyways, he looks you look
- 23:01great, Paul, you look fantastic. Bottom line is setting aside
- 23:04time to pray and like sticking to it.
- 23:07Honestly, if there's just one thing you do this Lent, it's and
- 23:12if you're not already praying, dedicated time set aside for
- 23:15mental prayer, read holy scripture.
- 23:17Just talk to God and say God. What do you want to show me or?
- 23:22Or don't talk to God because entering length you can just sit
- 23:25with God in silence in the desert because think about
- 23:28because. It's a good point.
- 23:29Paul, the Christian project is to put on Christ.
- 23:31That's why in the New Testament we see so much of the verbiage
- 23:34of in Christ, pray in Christ. So if you want to pray in
- 23:37Christ, which is easy for a baptized person because you've
- 23:39been baptized into his flesh, so you have access into the very
- 23:43sinews of Christ's body, and so sit with him in the desert, but
- 23:49don't even. You're saying don't even when?
- 23:51You're sitting, I think clear, clear your mind, clear your just
- 23:54sit with Christ only think about his very flesh, think about his
- 23:58hunger. And I think that is a starting.
- 24:00Place, but you want something to rest your mind, and in that case
- 24:02it would be the name of Jesus. Maybe or and So what what you
- 24:07said is great because Christ in the desert from that very gospel
- 24:11passage we get the words Christ responds to Satan who's trying
- 24:16to tempt him. He says man does not live on
- 24:17bread alone, but in every word that comes from the mouth of
- 24:20God. So what is Christ chewing on the
- 24:21in the desert? He's chewing on Scripture.
- 24:23Well, I think that that, but back to what you're saying, like
- 24:25you don't have to actually like talk to God.
- 24:27You can just receive God. I think that's really good.
- 24:29I mean, I do think people should talk to God.
- 24:32They should expose what's in their heart, their anxieties,
- 24:35their fears, their questions, and generally praise him, like
- 24:39thank him for all of the things that he's given.
- 24:41But to your point, the highest form of prayer is.
- 24:43To put on Christ's anxieties, and to put on Christ's thoughts,
- 24:46and to put on Christ. 'S mind.
- 24:48To pray in Christ, don't. Don't it.
- 24:51It is good to let Christ pray in you, but you're supposed to pray
- 24:54in Christ. Like one thing that's beautiful.
- 24:55When the Catechism talks about intercession, which we as
- 24:58Christians do, we pray for our brothers and sisters in the Holy
- 25:00Land. We pray for our families.
- 25:01You pray for your children. The reason why we intercede, the
- 25:05reason why we pray for others, is as simple and in the
- 25:09catechism it says this explicitly, as simple as the
- 25:11fact that in baptism we put on Christ and Christ intercedes.
- 25:16So at all of our prayer, whether it's intercession or praising
- 25:19the Father or or asking the Father for things, all prayer is
- 25:24done in the person of Christ. And because Christ intercedes
- 25:27for the world, He's the he's the intercessor between God and man.
- 25:30We join him in that intercession.
- 25:32That's such a. That's such a good word that
- 25:35you're saying because yesterday when I was praying, it was like,
- 25:39there's so much that I cannot do be I was just like and we.
- 25:44Can't do anything. We can't do anything.
- 25:45I was just like it was it was this like prayer to God of like,
- 25:47OK, I cannot do any of this. I am like a speck and So what,
- 25:53what next? Right, OK, got really good at
- 25:56disciplines and really tough and like study and all this habits
- 25:59and but it's like, no, what's next is literally Jesus.
- 26:02You do it. You are the one like you are
- 26:06everything. And I need to, I need to be
- 26:09transformed. I'm I'm starving for that.
- 26:12I cannot do it on my own. I can only do it through Jesus
- 26:14Christ. And I literally just open myself
- 26:17up to Jesus Christ and just say. And the way you do that your.
- 26:20Will be done. And the way you do that
- 26:21explicitly is with an act of of a surrender like.
- 26:24That I believe. Acts of surrender are great,
- 26:26Yep, but then also the the way we like my my daughter, she sees
- 26:31me doing things, she imitates them.
- 26:32We're called to be we're called to be like little children.
- 26:35And so we need to put ourselves into the the the home of Jesus.
- 26:42We need to watch him because we and God has given us a rebirth.
- 26:46We are babies in in the household of God and we are all
- 26:51we are called to be like in the Psalm, Psalm 128.
- 26:54We're called to be like shoots of the olive around his table.
- 26:57He is the man who fears the Lord in that Psalm.
- 26:59He is the man who has in in the home of his church in the heart
- 27:02of his home been fruitful. Your wife like a fruitful vine
- 27:04in the heart of your home. But we are the shoots of the
- 27:06olive tree and we have to be planted and watch our Father.
- 27:11We have to watch Christ. We have to.
- 27:13We have to keep our eyes fixed on Him and then let him do the
- 27:16rest. Let him inspire us to be great
- 27:18and be better and let Him give us the grace to improve.
- 27:22But that only comes through simply watching Christ and and
- 27:27adopting the heart of a child. So yesterday I it's very
- 27:30beautiful. Yesterday I was talking with
- 27:31this woman named Brittany de Lamora, and we interviewed her.
- 27:35Actually, we're going to release her episode probably next week.
- 27:37I don't know when her episode's coming out in the next couple
- 27:39weeks. Will her episode come out?
- 27:40But anyways, it was extremely inspiring.
- 27:43She was very inspiring. She used to be effectively in
- 27:46prostitution, pornography, all of this dark stuff, right?
- 27:49Had a conversion fell away like, you know, didn't wasn't really
- 27:52discipled, had a rough childhood anyways ends up coming back to
- 27:56faith and getting actually some discipleship about like living
- 27:59an ordered life, you know, don't do this anymore.
- 28:01And you know what does it? What is right from wrong?
- 28:03What does it mean to be a Christian?
- 28:05But anyway, she was talking about how God told her you must
- 28:09leave this career and that's how she made her money.
- 28:12Like she and she she had fears that she couldn't make money out
- 28:14of any other way. This was her entire world.
- 28:16And she just said, I obey because this is evil and I need
- 28:19to follow you and I I don't want to go to hell.
- 28:21I want to go to heaven. I want to be with you.
- 28:24And so she did that, but she had no backup plan.
- 28:26There was no like backup plan for her in terms of financially,
- 28:30socially, whatever. And she she just was sharing how
- 28:33God gave her everything she needed.
- 28:35She had no money. Literally money would come in
- 28:37the mail from some like insurance check that they like
- 28:40everything ended up working out for her.
- 28:43Not some some like inglamorous, you know, materialistic way like
- 28:47she just was, you know, everything was perfect from like
- 28:49the world standards, but everything ended up working out
- 28:52for this woman, this former prostitute who finally turned
- 28:54her life around, even though she was fearful that she couldn't
- 28:57change her life. There was no future for her.
- 28:59She had trust in Jesus and she said, I trust in you.
- 29:02She did the next right thing and God showed up for her and God
- 29:06also transformed her. I mean, she's like this
- 29:08childlike faith that she had. It was it was convicting me like
- 29:10her faith was convicting me that she just trusted the Lord.
- 29:14And what is the Christian life more than yes, repent, believe
- 29:18and then what? Trust and obey like that is the
- 29:20Christian life. Repent, believe, trust, obey and
- 29:23obviously all is all is an. Act of worship, it's just to put
- 29:26on Christ and I think one one thing I love is how in Lent all
- 29:33the music changes. So being on on our project we
- 29:38sing the liturgy of the hours and post logs and vespers and
- 29:40compliment on our channel. But.
- 29:41Can you sorry? Yeah, so the church has the
- 29:43church has liturgies. All the lingo.
- 29:46What do? What do all those things mean?
- 29:47The Church has liturgies of the hours, meaning set times and by.
- 29:51Church You. Mean the Universal church, but
- 29:53you're. Talking about, you know,
- 29:54obviously a lot of folks listening might be evangelical,
- 29:57Orthodox, other things, but Liturgy of the Hours?
- 29:59Well, that's, that's the the the current title of the Roman
- 30:02Catholic practice of it is the Liturgy of the Hours.
- 30:04But other I mean, in the Anglican Church, it's the the
- 30:07comic book of prayer. The Lutherans have their their
- 30:09Psalter, I forget what it's called, but they're all
- 30:11beautiful and they they this is a very, very old Christian thing
- 30:14is that we do the it's. Thousands of years old.
- 30:16It's as old as it's as old as what the, I mean, the, the, the
- 30:19Jewish people did it before we did it.
- 30:21But anyway, so we take a set times to pray every three hours
- 30:25in the, in the Roman Rite and those the, the, the, the chance
- 30:29for Lent change. So for example, every morning
- 30:32now when I when I wake up, the first thing I do is the invitory
- 30:37Psalm. So every day of the year, the
- 30:38church prays Psalm 95 as the first thing they do every
- 30:40morning. What is Psalm 90?
- 30:415 Psalm 95 is Come, let us sing to the Lord, and shout with joy
- 30:43to the rock who saves us. Let us approach him with praise
- 30:45and Thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to the Lord.
- 30:47The Lord is God the mighty, God the great King over all the
- 30:49gods. Should I keep going or you?
- 30:50Haven't memorized? I've I probably.
- 30:52How many of the Psalms do you have memorized?
- 30:55I don't know, I have no idea. You were telling me yesterday,
- 30:58sorry this is a tangent, but you were telling me yesterday that
- 31:00because you literally sing the Liturgy of the Hours every day
- 31:04and then you also have recorded them for the rest of the church
- 31:07to sing through. Sing the hours, your, your, your
- 31:09apostolate, or whatever you want to call it that you always have
- 31:12these psalms in your mind. Yeah, I shared that with you
- 31:14privately, but I guess now the mass is yeah.
- 31:16So yeah, I just have a running. It's just it's I can't turn it
- 31:19off. And sometimes it kind of it's
- 31:20like wow, I literally can't turn it off.
- 31:22I just always the. Words of the psalmist.
- 31:24I always They're just. The words of Scripture, well,
- 31:25they're, they're, they're the, they're the inner thoughts of
- 31:27Christ. And that's what excites me.
- 31:28But it terrifies me sometimes because I'm thinking, why am I
- 31:31thinking about Meribah and Massa and the hardness of the people's
- 31:34hearts there? And why am I thinking about
- 31:36this? But it's literally the Psalms
- 31:38are the thoughts of Christ. So if you want to put on Christ,
- 31:40that's why. They pray to the Psalms.
- 31:41So it actually is very powerful and beautiful because when I
- 31:45text with Paul or you know, he lives in Northern California,
- 31:47we're in Southern California. So I'm trying to get him to move
- 31:50down here, but he, you live far away from me.
- 31:51We used to live in Boston. Recently they moved to you and
- 31:54your family moved to California. Anyway, so we call and text.
- 31:56Mostly we text because calling is really hard with our
- 31:59schedules and stuff. But when we text each other,
- 32:02you're always texting like, you know, random, random.
- 32:07I mean, it feels random sometimes psalms and you're
- 32:09like, check out this, check out this Psalm and then Mehrabad
- 32:12Masa and like the Lord in the in the city gates and like all
- 32:15this, like, you know, language, right?
- 32:17And I'm like, OK, that's very nice, Paul, you know, but you're
- 32:20like texting it because it's it's alive in you.
- 32:23Like that is speaking to you. The Holy Spirit's using speaking
- 32:25to you through that. So in so I'm just, I'm saying
- 32:29that it's a beautiful thing and it's inspiring to me and I think
- 32:32it's helping many other people through seeing the hours.
- 32:34You're inspiring to me. I love Lyla Lyla's the best.
- 32:37So in Lent, in Lent, the the tone, so Psalm 95 in Lent has a
- 32:43fixed introductory verse, which is come, let us worship Christ,
- 32:48who for our sake suffer was tempted and suffered for us.
- 32:54And in Latin it's well actually I can pull it up in English.
- 32:59I'll sing it in English. If you want.
- 33:00Yeah, yeah, we should. But what do you want to do?
- 33:01What excites me about the season of Lent musically is that
- 33:04there's fixed music that throughout the year, I think
- 33:06about when Lent comes, I'm going to get to sing that every single
- 33:09morning. And that's my sacrifice of
- 33:11praise. Those are the those are the
- 33:12words that the universal Church and the music, that's the
- 33:15beautiful thing, the music that the Universal Church is going to
- 33:18offer to God. And it sounds Lenten like this.
- 33:20This energizes my my Lenten observance every single day.
- 33:24It starts like this. I'll do you want it in Latin or
- 33:26English? Maybe English?
- 33:28OK, come, let us worship Christ the Lord for our sake and
- 33:40temptation and suffering. And then the tune for Lent is in
- 33:49this tone. Come.
- 33:52It's so beautiful. Listen, come.
- 33:55Let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the rock who
- 34:00saves us. Let us approach Him with praise
- 34:05and Thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to the Lord.
- 34:15And then you do the verse in between.
- 34:17Come, let us work. Oh, that was beautiful.
- 34:20What is that? That's the invitory song.
- 34:21So this is the chant, so the invitory song.
- 34:23Invitory Song. At the beginning of morning
- 34:25Prayer, every day the church opens with a chant and it's
- 34:28always Psalm 95, but it's set to different arrangements in
- 34:31different. Cities because you are living,
- 34:33eating, breathing this, praying this every day.
- 34:35Morning prayer. When you refer to morning prayer
- 34:38for the church, Yeah, you're talking about.
- 34:40The Office of the Liturgy. Of the hour literacy of the
- 34:42hours, which is an ancient Christian practice, right?
- 34:46Based upon Holy Scripture as a way to every three hours.
- 34:51Yes, sing the praises. Of God and worship him using his
- 34:55own. Words, yeah, because worship,
- 34:57because the project of a Christian worship is giving
- 34:59God's own words back to Him. It's not making up our own song
- 35:03and then singing it to Him, our own composition.
- 35:05Worship is. There is no sacrifice that God
- 35:09desires other than the words of his son Jesus and the psalmist
- 35:13David as well is how the church has extended that.
- 35:15Because Jesus is born in the line of David, God wants his own
- 35:18words delivered back to him as a song of praise.
- 35:20That is the project of Christian.
- 35:22Even what you're just saying, I think there's so much I don't
- 35:26know. We could do a whole conversation
- 35:27about that because there is so much emphasis today among
- 35:31Christians on worship music and there's some very lovely worship
- 35:35music like I, I will admit, I'm a little bit of a sucker for.
- 35:39You know Spirit lead me where the.
- 35:42You know, you know, my faith has those.
- 35:44Are all great devotional tools, but worship we, we have to be
- 35:48clear about what worship is worship.
- 35:50That's why the pinnacle of worship is when the word of God
- 35:54himself is offered on the altar in the Eucharist.
- 35:57Christ is the word made flesh. And so that is the pinnacle
- 36:01because now it's the enfleshment of what all other worship is,
- 36:04which is the word of God-given to God.
- 36:07That's why all the Liturgy of the Hours is Eucharistic.
- 36:09This is something that's been declared by the church.
- 36:11It's Eucharistic because we are when we receive the word of God,
- 36:14it it enters our flesh and then when we sing it back to him, our
- 36:17flesh has become enlivened to deliver that word back to God
- 36:20rather than it not bearing fruit.
- 36:21Like if if the seed of God, if the Eucharist just goes into our
- 36:25soil and then dies there. That's not the best case
- 36:29scenario, but it flowers into delivering God's Word.
- 36:32I. Was talking to a friend recently
- 36:35who's Protestant, very devout, and she was talking about how
- 36:38she listens to worship music and that helps her think of God
- 36:42throughout the day. And most worship music.
- 36:45Maybe there's some scriptural reference in it, but a lot of it
- 36:47is sort of, you know, man's words and then they might
- 36:50reference Scripture, but it's, you know, words about how much I
- 36:53need you, Jesus like I. Need.
- 36:54It's not a matter of the result. It's not a matter of how it
- 36:57makes us feel or how it makes us better or how it makes us think
- 36:59of God. Worship is is connected to the
- 37:02the virtue of justice. It is it is the just thing to do
- 37:06to give to God to render unto God a sacrifice of praise.
- 37:10And so as a matter of justice, justice has principles like so
- 37:14to fulfill the precept of the the justice we owe God, we have
- 37:18to give his own words back to. Him So I agree with you, of
- 37:21course. But here's the thing.
- 37:22A lot of people today, when they think about spiritual practices,
- 37:26when they think about getting closer.
- 37:28To Jesus. It's all about the personal
- 37:30relationship, which by the way, that relationship of course
- 37:33matters. Then you have to define what
- 37:34does it mean to have a personal relationship with Jesus.
- 37:37But back to the worship music stuff, I think there's all
- 37:40these, you know, worship artists and they sing songs.
- 37:42A lot of their songs are about like the need that we have for
- 37:46Jesus, the need we have for God. And then there's songs just
- 37:49praising God, like God, you are great God, you are, you know,
- 37:53perfect God, we love you. You are like so merciful, full
- 37:56of grace, all of these things. And so there's so many worship
- 37:59songs and they're usually like more modern in their beats or
- 38:01whatever. You can have like the older
- 38:03hymns, right, that are, you know, different kind of
- 38:06variation on the theme. But anyways, so there is a
- 38:09strong sense today in American Christian culture, let's just
- 38:12say that to worship God, absolutely.
- 38:16We use our life to worship God and how we live.
- 38:18But to worship God includes singing these like praise and
- 38:21worship songs. And I think what you're making
- 38:23the point of which I think is a very powerful point, is that
- 38:26there's more to the story. We do intercession to put on
- 38:29Christ, right? That's the previous idea we
- 38:30talked about the Holy Spirit will recognize his own words
- 38:37like there's there's no sure like the way is narrow, the gate
- 38:40is narrow and the reason why we've been given Scripture by
- 38:43God, the reason why we've been given these these words to
- 38:46include in liturgy and worship is to give them back to God and
- 38:49to and to participate in the Trinitarian mystery.
- 38:52And if we do that outside of and there's nothing wrong with
- 38:55hymns, there's absolutely nothing what's and the church
- 38:57has approved hymns which, which are used in liturgy.
- 39:01There's a hymn book of the church in in the Liturgy of the
- 39:03hours. The liturgy hour is full of
- 39:04hymns. There's nothing wrong with that
- 39:05and there's nothing wrong with using devotional things to to
- 39:09make you, you know, feel closer to God.
- 39:11There's nothing wrong with any of that.
- 39:12The point is we need to be particular about what worship
- 39:14is, and worship is when we let Christ be the choirmaster, let
- 39:20Christ direct our worship because we're trying to pray in
- 39:23Christ. Meaning the words and the
- 39:24person. Christ is the Word of God.
- 39:26So the Word of God is a is a participation in Christ's very
- 39:29DNA in in his flesh. And that's why I do think
- 39:32there's something really beautiful happening right now in
- 39:35American Christianity, generally speaking, and Western
- 39:37Christianity where there is a, a, a refocusing even among our
- 39:42non Catholic Christian brothers and sisters.
- 39:45So they're not and the fullness of the faith in the Catholic
- 39:46Church, but they're, you know, seeking God, right, in their own
- 39:49Protestant faith. But the fact that there is this
- 39:52sort of desire to know Scripture and to read Scripture and to
- 39:57meditate on Holy Scripture, I mean, I think that's a really
- 40:01good, good movement. That's still different from.
- 40:03So reading scripture and consuming it is different from
- 40:07delivering it to God. So that.
- 40:10Act as a sacrifice when, when you so there's and we should
- 40:13read scripture. We should study it day and
- 40:15night. But you're saying literally sing
- 40:16the psalms backwards. Literally giving, giving them as
- 40:19a sacrifice of praise to God is something that universally all
- 40:23Christians in all of history understood from the moment they,
- 40:26they, they were two years old forever.
- 40:29Well, we're going to do it in a second, but but I, I want to get
- 40:31back to you so real quick. What I love about Lent?
- 40:34We get these chants that are Lenten vert in Latin.
- 40:37What I just saying is like this vernite exulte most domino.
- 40:43This is Psalm 95, you bile musteo salutori nostro.
- 40:49So the words are the same. It's let us come, let us sing to
- 40:51the Lord. But it sounds mournful and it
- 40:53sounds like we're, we're on this, this pilgrimage together
- 40:55with Christ. I literally when I sing this
- 40:57every morning, I imagine Christ there and at the start of land,
- 41:01he's at a distance because I'm afraid to approach him.
- 41:02And I'm wandering with him in the desert at a distance and I'm
- 41:04singing to him as we go through the sand.
- 41:07And then in Easter though, and this is what I look forward to,
- 41:09I'll just sing you how it sounds in Easter, this first phrase.
- 41:12And it sounds like the most beautiful, like listen to this.
- 41:16Vernite exulte mustomino ubile muste O Salvatore nostro
- 41:25preocupe musfachi emerus inconvasio NE ET in salmis ubile
- 41:35muste. Isn't that so much more like
- 41:40we've? We've won.
- 41:41We're resurrected. I'm.
- 41:42Walking What are the English? Translations when I that's come,
- 41:44let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the rock who
- 41:46saves. Us, let us sing to the Lord and
- 41:47shout with joy. But you know, what's beautiful
- 41:49is that in that second one, that music, and I just sang it now
- 41:52and now I'm thinking about Easter.
- 41:53That's Psalm 95 in both cases. But in that second point in in
- 41:57Easter, we sing that chant in that tune.
- 41:58It's the same chant, same text. We're singing Psalm 95 both
- 42:01ways. But in the wisdom of the church,
- 42:02we have the Lenten style for it. It's not just we're singing
- 42:05Psalm 95 the same way every day. It's in Lenton.
- 42:08We sing it the same way for 40 days straight and then an Easter
- 42:10for 50 days, literally because the the weather gets warmer.
- 42:13I wake up in the morning and when I sing that one, now I'm
- 42:16clinging to Christ in the garden and he's resurrected and the
- 42:20birds are chirping and I see flowers and that tune is
- 42:23perfectly. And now my meditation.
- 42:25Now I'm really, I'm, I'm totally praying in Jesus.
- 42:28And even though it's the same Psalm, it's the Psalm of Psalm
- 42:3095 where it talks about Maraba and Massa and it's talking about
- 42:33the in the wilderness, the entire meaning of it in the
- 42:36context of Christ revealing to us in the liturgical year
- 42:38changes because of the music. And this music is like 1000
- 42:41years old. And it's beautiful also to think
- 42:44that joining me, I'm not singing this alone when I sing.
- 42:50Let us sing to the Lord. It's not, it's not let me sing
- 42:53to the Lord. Let us sing to the Lord.
- 42:54And with me are all of those martyrs of Otranto who would
- 42:56have sang this in the exact same tune.
- 42:58All those, all those skulls come to life and I'm, I'm walking in
- 43:01the desert with them and we're all following Jesus together
- 43:03because it's a body of Christ. It's not just me.
- 43:05I'm not just Christ's body. We all are.
- 43:07And we're singing I, I can whenever, when I I prayed this
- 43:09in your backyard this morning and when I sang it this morning,
- 43:11the entire host of all the Christians who have sang it in
- 43:14this tune, all these martyrs, all these people join me.
- 43:16And now Christ is my choir master and Christ is the one who
- 43:20has given me these words to pray and I'm bring them back to God
- 43:22in the desert because I cannot live on bread alone, but on
- 43:25every word and chant that comes from the mouth of God, in the
- 43:27mouth of His church, his bride. Amen.
- 43:31Amen. We'll do it.
- 43:32You know what? Yeah, we'll do it.
- 43:33But you know what? This makes me?
- 43:35This is the thing. I mean, I'll, I this is my
- 43:38experience. Anyways, we have our lives.
- 43:40We have our relationships. We have our responsibilities.
- 43:43We have our desires. We have our human functions.
- 43:45Like we're just living our lives, right?
- 43:47And I think this vision that I think you're promoting of really
- 43:51Christianity, not some new idea. This is like ancient
- 43:54Christianity carried on until the present day.
- 43:57This is the practice of Christians for thousands of
- 43:59years to give the words of Christ back to him through the
- 44:02liturgy of the hours, to sing praises to God, not in our own
- 44:06inventions, but using sacred Scripture, the word Jesus Christ
- 44:09made flesh. You know, obviously worshipping
- 44:11Jesus in the Eucharist, receiving him in the Eucharist
- 44:13is part of this. Obviously essential anyways,
- 44:15when, what's so crazy to me is like when I see you do this
- 44:19because you pray every three hours.
- 44:21You, you like you're, you're, it's kind of, to be honest, it's
- 44:24not annoying as a mean word, but like when I'm, when I see you,
- 44:27you're like, we got to pray. We got to pray the literacy of
- 44:29the person. Like we're about to have lunch,
- 44:31Paul, or like, you know, it's, it's 8:00 PM and we're in the,
- 44:33we're literally made conversation about something
- 44:35else or like putting the kids to bed.
- 44:37We got to pray. We got to, we got to do this.
- 44:38It's a time, it's time for the thing.
- 44:39And I'm just like, what? You know, OK, whatever, but
- 44:43there's something. Trying to embarrass me in front
- 44:44of my friends. No, no, no.
- 44:45It's, it's what I'm saying is it's beautiful and humbling
- 44:48because here's the thing, not that everybody has the ability
- 44:51to pray every part of the Liturgy of the Hours, but I
- 44:54think you would argue all Christians should pray some of
- 44:57the Liturgy of the Hours all. Christians of the church argues.
- 44:59The church says that we should, Yeah.
- 45:01And this is this is the kicker. OK, instead of having like our
- 45:04personal Bible study where we're like, we're going to go through
- 45:06the book of Mark, you know, like we're going to read the book of.
- 45:09We can be priest, prophet and king.
- 45:11But can I explain that this is the most So what you and I just
- 45:13did in the church, because Lila and I just did this for for
- 45:15morning prayer. We the reason why Christ says
- 45:19where two or more gathered in my my name than I am among you.
- 45:21If you're studying the Bible on your own, that's a beautiful
- 45:23thing and you should be filling your mind with the word of God.
- 45:26But something special happens in liturgy when 2 Christians gather
- 45:30in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
- 45:33When we embark on liturgy together, which is a public act
- 45:37and a social act, What happens is we get to we get to
- 45:41experience our baptismal identity.
- 45:44We are baptized into priest. What else?
- 45:47Prophet, prophet and king? Priest, prophet and king.
- 45:51Yes. Because that's Christ identity
- 45:53and we're baptized into the flesh of Christ.
- 45:55Sorry, sorry, it's spiritual. Bingo with me on Live's YouTube.
- 45:58I'm sorry, sorry, sorry. No, it's OK, you can do that.
- 46:00Priest, prophet and king, so I. Was going to say priest,
- 46:03prophet, and martyrdom. The reason why I'm annoying
- 46:05about this and the reason why I look.
- 46:07Forward. To because I can't, I can't
- 46:10fully experience my, my identity without you.
- 46:12Lila. Let let me explain what we just
- 46:15did in the church. If, if I had done like this
- 46:16morning when I did it, when I did it in the backyard, I wasn't
- 46:20fully able to practice priest, prophet and king.
- 46:21Here's why I was able, I was able to practice priest because
- 46:25I offered a sacrifice, the sacrifice of praise, which is
- 46:27what they call the liturgy, the hours.
- 46:28So in the backyard this morning while while you were in your
- 46:30meeting, I, I offered the office of readings Matins and I did a
- 46:34sacrifice of praise, a priestly act, which I'm, I'm is my
- 46:38birthright in baptism. I'm baptized a priest, that's
- 46:42what that means. I'm baptized people offer a
- 46:44sacrifice of praise #2 though prophet, I'm sort of doing it.
- 46:49But prophecy needs an audience. When you and I were switching
- 46:53off praying the Psalms this morning in the church, when when
- 46:57I was doing my couplet of verses, I'm prophesying to you
- 47:00because I'm, I'm giving you the the word of God.
- 47:03I'm delivering you a message. That way too, I receive like,
- 47:06'cause when you when you hear someone else say it to you, next
- 47:08to you unto God, it's different. It's different and then you say
- 47:11it and you're you're kind of confirming each other's
- 47:13sacrifice of praise. You're saying you sacrifice of
- 47:15praise and I receive it and Ioffer.
- 47:17With you, but when you receive it, who receives when the wise
- 47:21men gave Christ gifts, what are they acknowledging about Christ
- 47:25that he is king and so to receive the word of God.
- 47:28And that's why you sit during the the the the praying of the
- 47:31Psalms usually is because you're you sit enthroned then and
- 47:34another person. You then get to participate
- 47:37mystically what what is happening in heaven when we do
- 47:40the liturgy hours you you get to sit as Christ and receive just
- 47:44like Christ is receiving his own words back to him.
- 47:45Your identity as Christ king in that moment when we switch off
- 47:49and I take those two verses and do them to you, you are now
- 47:51king. So priest, prophet and king only
- 47:52works if you have another person and then when we're together,
- 47:55two or more gathered and. There's the thing, it's so
- 47:57beautiful what you're saying and when you actually dive into it,
- 48:00it makes so much sense. But to your average Christian
- 48:03today, this is a culture shock because this way of of
- 48:07understanding prayer and understanding Holy Scripture is
- 48:11not the way that most people were raised like a very small
- 48:15fraction even of. Because we've been raised in
- 48:17Babylon. A very small fractions, like the
- 48:19tiniest fraction even of Catholics.
- 48:21I'm going to argue like .1% of Catholics, we're raised with the
- 48:25liturgy of the work. Excuse me, the Liturgy of the
- 48:28Hours singing the Hours, right? Yeah, we got work to do.
- 48:31What's their birthright? It's all.
- 48:33Of their birthright powerful is like, I just look at like the,
- 48:35the, the, the piety and the dedication that I see, like the
- 48:39obedience I see with so many of my, you know, fellow Christians,
- 48:43including non Catholic Christians who are like, I'm
- 48:44going to do my daily meditation. I'm going to do my daily
- 48:47scripture reading. I'm going to listen to praise
- 48:49and worship music. I'm going to praise God through
- 48:51praise and worship music. If I hold some sort of a
- 48:53spiritual event, I'm going to open it with praise and worship
- 48:54music. So I think people understand
- 48:57because we were made for this. They want to worship, they want
- 49:00to praise. They know that's they're
- 49:02supposed to do that. They want to do that.
- 49:04It's transformative when they do.
- 49:05But what's missing is, you know, there's a 2000 year tradition
- 49:11intrinsically tied to Holy Scripture of how to make this a
- 49:15part of your life and and order it so that you're not kind of
- 49:19making it just like me and Jesus.
- 49:21You don't have to be the Pope. You don't have to make your own
- 49:23liturgical rules. Isn't this why you became
- 49:24Catholic? You you became Catholic because
- 49:26they because they what you had a recent episode about this on
- 49:30Matt Fradd It it it is a a source and font of of doctrinal
- 49:35and moral certs certainty. It's also a source and font of
- 49:40of praxis certainty of, of how should we approach God, How, how
- 49:44can we give his words back to him?
- 49:45How can we praise him? What is going to be a sacrifice
- 49:47that that he that he will delight in.
- 49:50And that's why that's why I became Catholic.
- 49:52That's why you became Catholic and all that exists in the
- 49:54prayer of the Catholic Church. They the reason why they I know
- 49:58because because we are more in a we are just the, the death of
- 50:03culture has happened of all culture and it's, it's affected
- 50:06Catholic culture too. But the, the beautiful thing is
- 50:10that this stuff speaks for itself and it's beautiful.
- 50:12And you can, you can listen. You can join me in prayer on
- 50:14sing the hours. And by the way, that invitory
- 50:15song for Lent I published on our channel, chance and rants.
- 50:18I sang the whole thing in Latin and English.
- 50:20There are two videos on chance and rants.
- 50:22If if you want to pray the Psalm 95 the way that the church is
- 50:25going to pray every day for the next 40 days, you can check out
- 50:27that video. So Paul, I want to just look at
- 50:29the chat. All of our friends are in the
- 50:31chat right now. And then we'll do our prayers
- 50:32and we invite people to pray with us, right?
- 50:34Yeah, sure. Yeah.
- 50:35You can pull up I breviary. You can pull up I breviary
- 50:37before. That Let me just say hello to
- 50:39folks in the chat. Oh, Jared Koch.
- 50:41Hi, Jared. I know, Jared.
- 50:42I love Jared. He's saying hello, Jared and I.
- 50:45Reconnected a couple. Weeks ago so cool hello, Jared.
- 50:48OK, we've got a lot of folks here.
- 50:50Julius is saying thanks for this awesome broadcast.
- 50:52That's so sweet. Sarah says Lila's brother is
- 50:55just as brilliant as she is all. Oh, no, that's so sweet.
- 50:57No, he's actually smarter than me, but.
- 50:59I'm a total amateur. No, he's everything I say.
- 51:01You got to look up. And then, well, yeah, we we have
- 51:04Harris here to Fact Check us, which is great.
- 51:08Christ, Christ with Chris says beautiful voice.
- 51:10He was talking about your voice. Because that is it, Lila.
- 51:13You have a beautiful voice. Thank you, Claudia says.
- 51:16Love Lila's brother. So funny and smart.
- 51:19Thanks, Claudia. That's very kind.
- 51:20Claudia, you can you, you can stick around.
- 51:22You can watch us anytime. You're filling up his cup.
- 51:25Thanks so much, Claudia. And then Victoria says you can
- 51:27tell you guys what happened to that comment.
- 51:30Hi, Victoria. Sorry, the chat's moving.
- 51:33And so I scroll up and it scrolls down.
- 51:35I think I lost that comment. I'm sorry Victoria all right
- 51:38well, we'll cut we'll have to come back to that anyways.
- 51:42Thank you guys so sweet for all of the comments.
- 51:45We're going to pray together now.
- 51:48So this whole episode has been about Lent and prayer during
- 51:51Lent and sacrifice during Lent and and death and skulls.
- 51:55We talked about the death and skulls already, but anyways,
- 51:58we're going to do some Liturgy of the Hour.
- 52:00So which Liturgy of the Hours let's?
- 52:02Just do daytime prayers. This.
- 52:04Is called daytime prayers, so can we actually?
- 52:05We'll do mid afternoon prayer pull up by Breviary.
- 52:08We actually, yeah, so. We're just like breviary.com or
- 52:10whatever. If you are watching stop your
- 52:12scroll pray with me and my brother.
- 52:14It'll take about 5 minutes. Don't pray with us, pray with
- 52:17Jesus because the Universal Church is going to.
- 52:19We're both looking at Jesus. Jesus is going to lead us in
- 52:23prayer. Jesus.
- 52:23Is going to lead us in prayer. That is why we do the office.
- 52:26OK. And two or.
- 52:27More gathered. Or two or more gathered.
- 52:29Gathered. Oh, I guess we should be looking
- 52:30at this camera, Paul, because this is the one if it's.
- 52:32We're going to wait. Hi, guys.
- 52:34Hi, guys. OK.
- 52:37Yeah, So just do I Breviary. OK, If if you go to the website
- 52:42there, there's a mobile app for Ibraviary.
- 52:44Ibraviary is a digital way to access the books that contain
- 52:47the prayers for every three hours.
- 52:48It's a great website. So I think you need to go to
- 52:50ibraviary.org/EN and let me see, how about divineoffice.org?
- 52:56It might not match because we're doing just just do, just do
- 52:58Ibraviary. You'll, you'll be able to pull,
- 53:00pull it off. There's one link that's their
- 53:01website and there's one link that's just, they're like
- 53:03digital technical difficulties. Another comment from Vincent.
- 53:09Vincent says. What's funny is that I just
- 53:11discovered seeing the hours on Sunday.
- 53:14I had no idea it was your brother Lila.
- 53:15That's cool. That's cool.
- 53:17Sometimes I have no idea I. Have a lot of siblings.
- 53:19I have seven siblings, so. Look, Harris, if if you type in
- 53:23look at this, if you type in ibravial to Google, it'll have
- 53:27all the prayers right there and you can click just click on
- 53:30daytime prayer. All right, so we're going to do
- 53:34mid afternoon prayer and we're just going to do it with very
- 53:37simple chant. It'll be great.
- 53:39Lila Lila if if you mess up the chin, don't worry.
- 53:41Just just focus on the word of God because I I've just just
- 53:44don't be self-conscious. Just whatever comes out is
- 53:46beautiful. Why would I be self-conscious?
- 53:49She's impossible. All right.
- 53:51Are you saying? That I have.
- 53:52The tune we're going to use by the.
- 53:54Way no. You have a gorgeous voice.
- 53:55The tune we're going to use, by the way, we're doing the third
- 53:56hymn the for mid afternoon prayer.
- 53:59We're going. To do and we'll do them all
- 54:07together, all right and. Then we're going to switch off a
- 54:15lot of you and I will switch off verse by verse, line by line,
- 54:19OK? OK.
- 54:19All right. So let me, can you?
- 54:21Are you going to put it right in the middle?
- 54:23So I can see it and I'll sing the anti phone by myself.
- 54:26OK. You ready?
- 54:29All right. OK, so you're starting this?
- 54:33Yeah, I'll start and then this is called morning this.
- 54:36Is daytime prayer what what we're doing is called non
- 54:39meaning the 9th hour. We're doing the 3:00 PM office
- 54:41or mid afternoon. You can do it as close to three
- 54:43as you. Can.
- 54:43Right now I'm sending you a bunch of.
- 54:44Texts. All right?
- 54:48Uh oh. Special instructions I'm not
- 54:49Privy to. This is bad.
- 54:51She's saying turn off Paul's mic.
- 54:52Wait. Turn it off.
- 54:53Shut him off. Bounce him out of here, guys.
- 54:56OK, We're doing daytime prayers with Paul Rose.
- 54:59And as as one last comment and. Paul will sing and I will sing
- 55:03it. Paul has instructed me not to be
- 55:04self-conscious and I will do my best.
- 55:06This is a this is the Friday office, so it's probably going
- 55:10to be in the Psalms. It's probably going to be the
- 55:12inner thoughts. 11 helpful starting point is remember
- 55:16Christ during his crucifixion and try to pray these Psalms in
- 55:23from his vantage point looking at his accusers.
- 55:25I guarantee you it's going to give you Christ's internal
- 55:29disposition on his crucifixion day.
- 55:33So think about that. Unite yourself to Christ
- 55:36suffering and also Christ in the desert.
- 55:39Just think about Lent, but also think about it's Friday.
- 55:41So the church often has prayers on Fridays.
- 55:43So this is a more meditating on what is going to be Good Friday,
- 55:47the day of Christ's crucifixion. So it's tied to that.
- 55:50You're the in in the office. You should always approach it
- 55:53with, with meditation because you're, you're fixed on Christ.
- 55:56You're putting his words. So it's no, it's no light
- 55:59business. You're putting Christ's words to
- 56:00your lips, so you have to put his.
- 56:02Let's do it and. Then Jared is asking, should we
- 56:07sing with both of you where we are?
- 56:08Yes. You can either pick Paul as your
- 56:10avatar, or you can pick me. So you can sing with me or you
- 56:13sing with Paul, and then we trade off.
- 56:15OK, so you. Can be my team or Paul's team.
- 56:17Yeah, Paul has the better voice. Gentleman sing with me late.
- 56:21Yeah, yeah. Here we go.
- 56:22Ready. OK all.
- 56:22Right, all right. God, come to my assistants.
- 56:26Lord, make haste to help me. Glory to the Father and to the
- 56:29Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, it's
- 56:32now and will be forever. Amen. 3 * 3 hours A sacred sum
- 56:46unfolds before us as we sing in Jesus holy name.
- 56:50We beg the gift of pardon for our sins.
- 56:54See how the thief confessed his faith and merited Christ's
- 56:59saving grace. Let our devotion and our praise
- 57:03obtain His pardon and His love. Now death is ruined by the
- 57:09cross, and after darkness light returns.
- 57:13Let horror brought by sin dispersed, and splendor shine in
- 57:18minds and hearts. We ask the Father and the Son,
- 57:23and beg the Spirit of them both. Sustain us with your loving
- 57:28care, who reigned forever three and one.
- 57:32Amen. Armed with God's justice and
- 57:40power, let us prove ourselves through patient, endure and.
- 57:46Wait, does Harris know where to go?
- 57:47You know where to go, Harris. OK, You got it.
- 57:48OK. Great, the Princess oppress me
- 57:51without 'cause I stand in awe of your word.
- 57:56I take delight in your promise like one who finds a treasure.
- 58:01Lies I hate and detest, but your law is my love.
- 58:07Seven times a day, I praise you for your just decree.
- 58:12The lovers of your law have great peace.
- 58:15They never stumble. That's so good.
- 58:18I await your saving help. O Lord, I fulfil your command.
- 58:23My soul obeys your will and loves it dearly.
- 58:28I obey your precepts and your will.
- 58:31All that I do is be for you. Glory to the Father and to the
- 58:35Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is
- 58:41now and will be forever. Amen.
- 58:45How good and how pleasant it is when brothers live in unity.
- 58:51It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the
- 58:55beard. Running down upon Aaron's beard,
- 58:59upon the collar of his bone robes.
- 59:02It is like the dew of Herman which falls on the heights of
- 59:06Zion. For there the Lord gives His
- 59:08blessing life forever. Glory to the Father and to the
- 59:14Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, His
- 59:18now and will be forever. Amen.
- 59:23Rescue me, Lord, from evil, men from the violent, Keep me safe.
- 59:28From those who plan evil in their hearts and stir up strife
- 59:32every. Day, who sharpen their tongue
- 59:34like in adders with the poison of Viper on their lips.
- 59:39Lord, guard me from the hands of the wicked, from the violent,
- 59:43Keep me safe. They plan to make me stumble.
- 59:46The proud of hidden a trap. The proud of that have spread
- 59:51out there, have spread out lines and a net that snares across my
- 59:56path. I have said to the Lord, You are
- 59:58my God. Lord, hear the cry of my appeal.
- 1:00:02Lord my God, my mighty help you shield my head in the battle.
- 1:00:07Do not grant the wicked their desire, nor let their plot
- 1:00:11succeed. I know that the Lord will avenge
- 1:00:14the poor, that He will do justice for the needy.
- 1:00:17Yes, the just will praise your name.
- 1:00:21The upright shall live in your presence.
- 1:00:24Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- 1:00:29As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever.
- 1:00:33Amen. Armed with God's justice and
- 1:00:38power, let us prove ourselves through patient enduring.
- 1:00:44Really quick, if anyone's can I say one thing, sorry.
- 1:00:46OK, Pray with us if you, you can sing with me or with Paul for
- 1:00:51the rest of this, just in case you're just joining.
- 1:00:52Sorry. Sorry, looking after orphans and
- 1:00:56widows in their distress and keeping oneself unspotted by the
- 1:00:59world make for pure worship without staying before our God
- 1:01:05and Father. My sacrifice to God is a
- 1:01:10contrite spirit. A humble, contrite heart.
- 1:01:14O God, you will not spurn. Let us pray, show gracious
- 1:01:18favour, O Lord, we pray to the works of penance we have begun
- 1:01:25that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the
- 1:01:30bodily observances we undertake through Christ our Lord.
- 1:01:38Amen. Benedict almost domino deo
- 1:01:43gracias deo grazias, which is loosely translated to let us
- 1:01:46praise Lord, give him thanks, Amen, Amen.
- 1:01:49Follow us on Holy Spirit. So that's that's the Denver so
- 1:01:51short that's like. 5 minutes. Thank you.
- 1:01:53That was beautiful, Paul. You, you did great.
- 1:01:56It's so intuitive, isn't? It it's good.
- 1:01:58I mean, that is true about chant and and this, you know, singing
- 1:02:02the hours is that it is very anybody can do it.
- 1:02:05Yeah, anybody. It doesn't matter how bad your
- 1:02:07voice is. That's true, because one thing I
- 1:02:09one, one thing I meditate on frequently is Andrea Bocelli has
- 1:02:12a great voice, right? We talked.
- 1:02:13About this in our last episode. Well then why not say it again
- 1:02:16I. Say it again.
- 1:02:17Say it again. If you think Andrea Bocelli has
- 1:02:19a good voice and only he can sing, praise and you just sing
- 1:02:22in the shower cause your voice is no good.
- 1:02:24Think about the cherubim and the angels who praise God all day
- 1:02:27long. Their voices are supernaturally
- 1:02:30better than Andrea Bocelli, so God thinks you're nothing to to
- 1:02:33sneeze at in. Terms of And God loves the God
- 1:02:35loves the little kid belting out song to Jesus.
- 1:02:38And he hears God. Loves even the child.
- 1:02:40And hears his son. That's why we do the office is
- 1:02:43because he doesn't hear us. He hears his Son because we're
- 1:02:46praying in Christ and that is what he wants.
- 1:02:50Paul, you're the best. Wait, is.
- 1:02:51There anything else you want to talk about about Lent?
- 1:02:53I feel like we got sidetracked. We got so sad.
- 1:02:55I'm a one trick. You are kind of A1 trick pony
- 1:02:58with your sing the. Hour.
- 1:02:59Terrible. What about Don Burr and Jay?
- 1:03:01What about the friends? Well, we we were going to film
- 1:03:03another episode. What about the friend?
- 1:03:05Episode I had this whole thing prepared with the French.
- 1:03:08I know Paul goes on these epic rants, which he literally has a
- 1:03:11YouTube channel called Chance and Rants and he will go on
- 1:03:13these rants. And I kid you not, I've had a
- 1:03:16number of phone calls with Paul where we're talking about one
- 1:03:19thing and then all of a sudden and, you know, Paul starts a
- 1:03:22rant. So we're it.
- 1:03:23Sounds like you too. No, not, not as bad as you.
- 1:03:25So we, Paul and I are on the phone.
- 1:03:26We're talking about like, you know, when we're going to film a
- 1:03:28podcast or like how our kids are doing or businesses or
- 1:03:31ministries or whatever anyways, And then Paul will start like
- 1:03:34ranting hard on me about some, you know, need in the church for
- 1:03:39the prayers and the Psalms. I thought I was going to.
- 1:03:41Literally I have done this. This does sound super rude.
- 1:03:43I do not recommend it but it it you know, trust me it's OK.
- 1:03:46I like put it. I put it on mute.
- 1:03:48I got my because I got my kids usually and you're like talking
- 1:03:51and I'm, you know, doing my stuff with my kids, changing my
- 1:03:53diaper or something, changing my child's diaper or something.
- 1:03:56But anyways, but you like, you don't need me to respond to your
- 1:03:59rant. You do a good and solid,
- 1:04:02sometimes like 4 or 5 minutes of like pontifications, you know,
- 1:04:08and then usually I'm like, I'm so sorry.
- 1:04:09I got to go. I got to go.
- 1:04:10It's good stuff. It's good.
- 1:04:11That's why he's good. He has a YouTube channel so he
- 1:04:13can share his wisdom and. Brilliant.
- 1:04:15Even my friend and whom I trusted who ate my bread has
- 1:04:17turned against. Him.
- 1:04:21I love the ball. You're the best.
- 1:04:23I love you too. Yeah.
- 1:04:23Should we talk about the French or are we closing?
- 1:04:25The French? What about?
- 1:04:26I had this whole I, I it's Tom Granchet, the 5 minutes.
- 1:04:31Who's Dom? Shuren Shay.
- 1:04:33Gurin, Shay. Who is Dom Gurin Shay?
- 1:04:35What does this have to do with Lent?
- 1:04:36It has. Everything to do with Lent
- 1:04:37we're. Going to do a closing thought.
- 1:04:40OK, we each will give a clothing closing thought about Lent.
- 1:04:43Paul's will likely to have to do with the French.
- 1:04:46And it'll likely be 5 minutes and Lila's going to put me on
- 1:04:48mute while she takes care of her children, so, you know.
- 1:04:51It's going to be 60 seconds, Jared says Paul is a ranter.
- 1:04:55Did he have an extra coffee today?
- 1:04:57Yes. Paul doesn't need coffee to
- 1:04:59rant. Paul naturally rants.
- 1:05:01Even even in a state of sleep deprivation and caloric
- 1:05:04deprivation, he can still rant. But anyways you get 60 seconds
- 1:05:07for Dom Gervais. Gernjay.
- 1:05:09Sorry, Gernjay. He was a French monk who re
- 1:05:12established the Abbey of Salem who now does all the chants of
- 1:05:15the church. Amazing figure. 18th, 19th
- 1:05:19century France. So in his introduction to Lent,
- 1:05:22he has his volumes of liturgical year.
- 1:05:23I just want to read a couple of excerpts and that'll be it.
- 1:05:25It'll take about a minute. Is that OK?
- 1:05:28So first he quotes a papal document from 1741.
- 1:05:33Quote. The observance of Lent is the
- 1:05:35very badge of the Christian warfare.
- 1:05:37By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of the cross of
- 1:05:40Christ. By it we avert the scourges of
- 1:05:42divine justice. By it we gain strength against
- 1:05:45the Princess of darkness, for it Shields us with heavenly help.
- 1:05:48Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it
- 1:05:53would be a detriment to God's glory, a disgrace to the
- 1:05:56Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls.
- 1:05:59Neither can it be doubted that such negligence would become the
- 1:06:02source of misery to the world, of public calamity and of
- 1:06:06private woe. And Dom Granger says, must there
- 1:06:12not result from this ever growing spirit of
- 1:06:15immortification, a general effeminacy of character which
- 1:06:19will lead at last to frightful social disorders?
- 1:06:23Wow, what does that mean? An effeminacy.
- 1:06:25Effeminacy of character that leads to frightful social.
- 1:06:29It means that if you can't deprive yourself of like this or
- 1:06:32that for a certain period, then you're self disciplined.
- 1:06:35You're, you're going to have all kinds of crazy like you'll,
- 1:06:38you'll have a generation of people that has no impulse
- 1:06:40control. And aren't we kind of there All
- 1:06:41right then? He says.
- 1:06:43Yeah. Like try it out.
- 1:06:45Check it out. It is good.
- 1:06:46So then he says practice. Mortification.
- 1:06:48So far we have been speaking. I'm just skipping around one
- 1:06:50last excerpt. So far we have been Speaking of
- 1:06:52the non observance of land and its relation to individuals and
- 1:06:54Catholics. Let us now say a few words upon
- 1:06:56the influence which the same non observance has on a whole people
- 1:06:59or nation. There are but few social
- 1:07:01questions which have not been ably and spiritedly treated by
- 1:07:05public writers of the age. But it is often been a matter of
- 1:07:08surprise to us that we should have overlooked a subject of
- 1:07:11such deep interest as this, the results produced on society by
- 1:07:15the abolition of Lent, that is to say, of an institution which
- 1:07:18more than any other keeps up in the public mind a keen sentiment
- 1:07:22of moral right and wrong, inasmuch as it imposes on a
- 1:07:25nation an annual expiation for sin.
- 1:07:27No shrewd penetration is needed to see the difference between
- 1:07:30two nations, one of which observes each year a 40 days
- 1:07:33penance in reparation of the violations committed against the
- 1:07:35law of God, and another whose very principles reject all
- 1:07:38solemn such solemn reparation. And as a final point, he says,
- 1:07:42I'm looking at the subject from another point of view, and he's
- 1:07:44a prophet here, he says, is it not to be feared that the
- 1:07:47excessive use of animal food tends to weaken rather than
- 1:07:49strengthen the constitution? We are convinced of it.
- 1:07:54The time will come when a greater proportion of vegetable
- 1:07:57and less of animal diet will be considered as an essential means
- 1:08:00for maintaining the strength of human frame.
- 1:08:02So monks have known that all along that I just eat very
- 1:08:05little meat and vegetables, and I live to 110 and all my
- 1:08:07brothers. And one day, he says, even
- 1:08:09though it wasn't in the 1800s, he says one day science will
- 1:08:12demonstrate that actually limiting our meat.
- 1:08:16And isn't red meat now a known carcinogen or carcinogen?
- 1:08:19OK. OK.
- 1:08:20I'm sure you've had. I'm sure you've had the meat.
- 1:08:22Only people on your. Yeah, I know, I know, right?
- 1:08:24Now and be like, you know, not. But anyway, there's my eggs.
- 1:08:28Thank you French. Thank you, French.
- 1:08:31Look him up. Amazing.
- 1:08:32Figure JJ. Dom Gurrenjay.
- 1:08:36Dom Gurrenjay, Thank you brother.
- 1:08:38Thank you, Thank you for humoring me.
- 1:08:40Yes, I let him rant. That wasn't my rant.
- 1:08:42Chat. It's like we want the French, so
- 1:08:44let him rant. We want the French rant, Amos
- 1:08:47says Amos. Says we want the French rant.
- 1:08:49We got me on mute. You got your rant guys, let me
- 1:08:51know if you like that. She's going to put me on you.
- 1:08:52Don't even have the power to put you on mute.
- 1:08:54Herod has to do it. And Harris says, well, Harris,
- 1:08:56are you on his side or my side? It's like, who's who's paying my
- 1:09:00checks? All right?
- 1:09:00I'm he's on my side. All right, OK.
- 1:09:02I'll be Paul for 30 seconds. OK, I think we're going to wrap
- 1:09:06now, you guys. Thank you for joining.
- 1:09:08I'm about to film another episode with Paul, which will
- 1:09:10probably come out in the next couple.
- 1:09:12Weeks, I said. You're going to give thoughts on
- 1:09:13Lent. Oh, my final.
- 1:09:14Thoughts. OK, my final thoughts on Lent, I
- 1:09:18mean, it's very simple, guys. I am honestly my big, literally
- 1:09:23the Holy Spirit. I prompted this, I believe, and
- 1:09:25used multiple people in my life who encouraged me to do this,
- 1:09:28like multiple different people. But my big commitment for Lent
- 1:09:31is to carve out faithfully that time every day for mental
- 1:09:35prayer. And that means reading Holy
- 1:09:36Scripture and just like opening myself up to the Holy Spirit and
- 1:09:41to Jesus. But to set that side of time
- 1:09:43with it, literally a time block of this is for Jesus.
- 1:09:45It's sacred time and that's my plan for Lent.
- 1:09:49I'm not doing anything else crazy.
- 1:09:50I'm, you know, going to go light on sweets.
- 1:09:52But it's really the prayer because it is so easy.
- 1:09:55It is so easy to not make that time for Jesus every day in
- 1:09:59sacred silence, sitting with him and meditating on His word and
- 1:10:03just giving His word as Paul says back to him.
- 1:10:05So that's my plan. You guys can ask me how it's
- 1:10:08going in a week, but every day without fail make that time so.
- 1:10:12There it is. You're the best.
- 1:10:14Thanks brother guys, thanks so much for joining.
- 1:10:15Us. Yeah, that was fun.
- 1:10:16Thanks guys Eyes.
