- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 21, Jesus
- 0:45teaches about what will happen as we grow closer and closer to
- 0:49His return to establish His permanent Kingdom.
- 0:52We hear of calamity and false teaching, persecution and
- 0:56betrayal. Times of difficulty are surely
- 0:59coming, but even more assuredly we know that Christ is coming to
- 1:04set all things right. And with that two pronged
- 1:07reality in mind, that tribulation is on the way and
- 1:11that the King is returning soon, Jesus instructs his followers,
- 1:16both his disciples in the 1st century and us today, how we
- 1:19ought to live. Listen to Jesus words in verses
- 1:2234 through 36 of this chapter. He says, Be on guard so that
- 1:28your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and
- 1:31drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come
- 1:34on you suddenly like a trap, for it will come upon all those who
- 1:38dwell on the face of all the earth.
- 1:40But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have
- 1:44strength to escape all these things that are about to take
- 1:47place and to stand before the Son of Man.
- 1:51In a parallel passage in Ephesians 5, the apostle Paul
- 1:54puts it this way. Therefore be careful how you
- 1:58walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your
- 2:02time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but
- 2:07understand what the will of the Lord is.
- 2:10And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation.
- 2:13But be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in
- 2:16psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody
- 2:20with your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks for all
- 2:23things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the
- 2:27Father. And be subject to one another in
- 2:30the fear of Christ. To sum it all up in a word, we
- 2:34must be ready. Be ready for that day.
- 2:37And how can we be ready? We acknowledge that life is
- 2:41short and Jesus is coming soon, so we make the most of the time
- 2:45we have. We guard our hearts against sin.
- 2:48We stay filled up with the Holy Spirit and avoid being filled by
- 2:52all the things the world passes off as solutions to our
- 2:55problems. We hand our anxieties and
- 2:59worries over to God rather than permitting them to blind us to
- 3:02what is real. We allow our words and thoughts
- 3:06to overflow with gratitude. We honor and encourage the
- 3:09brothers and sisters God has placed around us.
- 3:12We live lives of prayer, of holiness, of dependence on God.
- 3:17And we live lives full of faith and hope, eagerly awaiting the
- 3:21return of our King, who is coming soon.
- 3:24So receive this charge today. Do not waste the time you've
- 3:28been given. Redeem it.
- 3:30Make the most of it. Live a life of eager
- 3:33expectation, a life of hope. Jesus is coming.
- 3:38Be ready.
