- 1:36Speaker 1: Way Is to Love Your Children. Please welcome to Money
- 1:38Speaker 1: Making Conversation the founder, President, and CEO of The Accord Group,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Sonya Jackson Miles. Hello, good morning, good morning, good morning
- 1:50Speaker 1: the Sorority girl. You know family mother too. Straight out
- 1:55Speaker 1: of Cincinnati. Birthday girl. I'm not carefully from to day
- 2:01Speaker 1: and you look beautiful. You look beautiful. And those kids
- 2:03Speaker 1: are about to catch you. Two boys about to catch
- 2:05Speaker 1: you now, so you better you start sprinting because they're
- 2:08Speaker 1: about to catch you. Thank you so much for having
- 2:13Speaker 1: man absolutely thank you for being on my show. You're
- 2:15Speaker 1: an amazing person of our relationship ship started several years
- 2:19Speaker 1: ago at the Disney Dreamers Academy with Stephen Deep harved.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I found it with the Disney and fly one hundred
- 2:25Speaker 1: kids uh from around the country. Um, boys and girls.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Unlike the Boys Camp, we had which was only featuring
- 2:33Speaker 1: uh males. This camp feature boys and girls and parents
- 2:38Speaker 1: could live in the body, father could be in the household,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and it was really an enlightening experience. Uh tell the
- 2:43Speaker 1: people why you did that. The Disney Dreamers Academy, Oh
- 2:47Speaker 1: my gosh, it was. You know. When I first met you,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I was an executive at Procter and Gamble, and you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: just wanted to ensure that I was spending time doing
- 2:59Speaker 1: the things that brought me joy. As executives and leaders,
- 3:02Speaker 1: a lot of times we don't even know what brings
- 3:04Speaker 1: us joy, and so I wanted to make sure that
- 3:07Speaker 1: I could participate in a program that really aligned with
- 3:11Speaker 1: my core values. And when um the leaders over at
- 3:15Speaker 1: us and said, hey, we have something that we think
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Sister Accord would sit very nicely into, I said,
- 3:21Speaker 1: sign me up. You know I heard about what you
- 3:23Speaker 1: all were doing. It was such and it is such
- 3:26Speaker 1: an amazing program that's transforming the lives of the parents
- 3:31Speaker 1: and the students. Before we get into the fIF doing
- 3:35Speaker 1: Ways to Love your your children. And I want to
- 3:38Speaker 1: tell everybody, this book is like a you know, it's
- 3:40Speaker 1: a it's a you're watching online. I'm holding it up. Um,
- 3:45Speaker 1: this book is like a it should be on my table.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So this is a request. I need a bigger version
- 3:52Speaker 1: of this and I'm willing to pay whatever that charges
- 3:57Speaker 1: because the pictures are amazing. And I hope you're posting
- 4:01Speaker 1: some of the motivational quote of the culture along with
- 4:04Speaker 1: the photos online and if you do, let me let
- 4:07Speaker 1: me know so I can share them on my Facebook
- 4:09Speaker 1: page because they're they're so personalble, they're so incredible, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: they're so inspiring. And that's and it's all tied to
- 4:16Speaker 1: your children. I have a one year daughter. You know,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I don't care what I'm doing, what i'm business meeting,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I'm in. When she calls, I pick up the phone
- 4:25Speaker 1: because I know she had a point in her life
- 4:27Speaker 1: where I don't want, you know, her making a decision
- 4:30Speaker 1: because the reason she calls. She called me for a reason,
- 4:34Speaker 1: gonna call love your dad. But there's a reason she's
- 4:37Speaker 1: calling and what you need, baby girl. And and so
- 4:41Speaker 1: that's why I really love this book that you put
- 4:43Speaker 1: out because I know children are the key. And when
- 4:45Speaker 1: I see situations with children that don't go well, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: where children are being abused, I always say they have
- 4:51Speaker 1: to be here. These children that ask to be here,
- 4:55Speaker 1: they are blank slates. All they know is instant love.
- 4:58Speaker 1: All they want is to to get what you can
- 5:01Speaker 1: teach them. And they hold onto those values and those
- 5:04Speaker 1: those those moments that you share with them emotionally. And
- 5:08Speaker 1: that's why love is real big on her book, Ladies
- 5:10Speaker 1: and Gentlemen's real bigness. It's like Valentine's love on this
- 5:14Speaker 1: book is So before we get into a book, let's
- 5:17Speaker 1: talk a little about employee engagement that you do in
- 5:21Speaker 1: your consultancy, which is the sister of card uh d
- 5:24Speaker 1: b A, the core group UH Employment and Employment, Employee
- 5:28Speaker 1: engagement and team building. Yes, well there are statistics. Now
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna blow you away with this one. You probably
- 5:36Speaker 1: already know this, but um, you know research shows that
- 5:39Speaker 1: up to eighty five to nine percent of in U
- 5:44Speaker 1: and the US of employees in a company are disengaged.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Did you hear? Did you hear that? Absolutely? And I
- 5:51Speaker 1: believe that. I mean, think about why you can't meet
- 5:56Speaker 1: your profitability targets, think about why your efficiency isn't there
- 5:59Speaker 1: and your preductivity if employees are disengaged. And so I
- 6:04Speaker 1: spend a lot of time with companies helping them understand
- 6:08Speaker 1: the kinds of cultures uh that they can establish. To
- 6:12Speaker 1: really engage employees, have people understand what their role is
- 6:18Speaker 1: in the company very clearly, because I believe it or not,
- 6:21Speaker 1: a lot of times people aren't really clear about their roles.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But give people some opportunities and some tools to really
- 6:30Speaker 1: bring their gifts to the table be engaged. Loneliness in
- 6:33Speaker 1: the workplace is real, particularly if you think differently uh
- 6:38Speaker 1: than your colleagues or your boss, or you you look differently,
- 6:41Speaker 1: it can be a very lonely place. And so employee
- 6:44Speaker 1: engagement just is about getting these cultures right so that
- 6:48Speaker 1: everyone can win and everyone can be engaged, all hands
- 6:51Speaker 1: on deck. And then team building. I spend a lot
- 6:55Speaker 1: of time with my great leaders have great relationship series
- 6:59Speaker 1: where I am talking thing about how teams can come
- 7:02Speaker 1: together across the company. It was interesting that you were
- 7:05Speaker 1: talking about disengagement. I had a very talented entrepreneur on
- 7:09Speaker 1: the phone on the show, came in my studio live.
- 7:11Speaker 1: He has a book called leader Farming. For his book
- 7:15Speaker 1: is about trying to cultivate uh you know, play on
- 7:18Speaker 1: words farming, farming leaves developing leaders, and in that book
- 7:22Speaker 1: he was saying, and he's a franchise owner for a
- 7:25Speaker 1: Chick fil A, and he was talking about he was
- 7:27Speaker 1: talking about the millennial population because their whole that's what
- 7:31Speaker 1: this whole book is about, trying to engage this population,
- 7:33Speaker 1: because this is a population that says, you will work
- 7:37Speaker 1: for me. Okay, I'm an entrepreneur, you will work for me.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So they really struggle with this whole loyalty and how
- 7:45Speaker 1: long I'm gonna be here, how long I should be
- 7:48Speaker 1: there at this job because this is not a long term.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I'm not here at this location to get the gold Watch.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm here at you like sustain a level of income,
- 7:58Speaker 1: get my real goal and put active and get out.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And he said that that the struggle is trying to
- 8:03Speaker 1: get that that that mentality that I'm only your short term,
- 8:08Speaker 1: maybe through college, maybe just six months. I get my
- 8:10Speaker 1: feet right and I get this app up and rolling,
- 8:13Speaker 1: get this whole idea and digital that I'm trying to
- 8:15Speaker 1: put out that rolling because social media has changed that flatform,
- 8:18Speaker 1: that platform of engage me because you have people out
- 8:21Speaker 1: there who have developed their own brands that you've hired,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and they feel that their brand is really more important
- 8:27Speaker 1: than you hiring them. Absolutely, absolutely, And I spent a
- 8:31Speaker 1: lot of time with millennials because you know I told
- 8:34Speaker 1: you on twenty one, right, and so I you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I spent a lot of time with them. I understand them,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and I wish that I had my generation had a
- 8:43Speaker 1: little more of of how they think about things, because
- 8:47Speaker 1: we just accepted stuff. It could have been raggedy and ratchet,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but we still except absolutely. Now tell us about that.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I like that, So tell us about the fifty one
- 8:57Speaker 1: Ways to Love your children. Why did you write this book? Well,
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's interesting. So um one of my programs that has
- 9:05Speaker 1: been incorporated into Disney Dreams Academy is my dream Walking program,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and dream Walking is my attempt at solving helping people
- 9:17Speaker 1: overcome dream phobia. Now, I created the word dream phobia,
- 9:22Speaker 1: So the definition is, um, you know, the ridiculous and
- 9:26Speaker 1: absurd fear of playing full out in life because you
- 9:30Speaker 1: are more concerned with stayings small to please other people,
- 9:34Speaker 1: or staying or playing it's safe to please yourself. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: was playing it safe kind of girl for many years,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and so I wanted to help people understand the process
- 9:45Speaker 1: of how I brought my dream to life, taking my
- 9:47Speaker 1: dream from my heart, to my head, to my hands,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and to my feet. And so dream walking, um was,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, a big part of it. It is a
- 9:56Speaker 1: big part of Disney Dreaming Academy and for my consult
- 10:00Speaker 1: and see, and I wanted to really address the things
- 10:05Speaker 1: that are dream killers, that get in the way of
- 10:07Speaker 1: people really operating in what they've been called and created
- 10:12Speaker 1: to do. And that's um what fifty one Way to
- 10:15Speaker 1: Love Your Children is all about a lot of the
- 10:17Speaker 1: stuff that we carry as adults happened to us in childhood.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And a lot of times parents don't even realize it.
- 10:25Speaker 1: It's what they say and what they don't say, it's
- 10:27Speaker 1: what they do and what they don't do. And so
- 10:29Speaker 1: I wanted to start a conversation about how we must
- 10:35Speaker 1: invest in love and take care of our children, because
- 10:38Speaker 1: in so many instances, if you turn on the news,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you'll see the opposite happening. Our children are dying at
- 10:45Speaker 1: the hands of their parents, are being abused, neglected, And
- 10:48Speaker 1: so I wanted to use my voice and my platform
- 10:51Speaker 1: to really talk about what we were going to do
- 10:53Speaker 1: about it. And it's important that you did it. Here's
- 10:55Speaker 1: a statement that I love about the book, or throughout
- 10:57Speaker 1: the book is First of all, the photos are so
- 11:00Speaker 1: emotionally charge. I told you when I saw you in person,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I would okay, I love this book. And then you
- 11:09Speaker 1: have little sections where you can just write notes. And
- 11:12Speaker 1: that's the part she's talking about when you get memories.
- 11:14Speaker 1: What were you doing when you're we're a teenager? What
- 11:16Speaker 1: do you remember about your childhood? So you can implement
- 11:19Speaker 1: these these emotional or these memories into raising your child
- 11:23Speaker 1: to day or what things what what? What? What failed you?
- 11:26Speaker 1: You fail failed you that you can fix Because I
- 11:29Speaker 1: have a statement, always tell people that what you learn
- 11:31Speaker 1: in your twenties, I ways tell people you won't know
- 11:33Speaker 1: about your life you want to play in your future.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I always feel you have to look back in your past.
- 11:38Speaker 1: That's a defining moment in your path that allows you
- 11:40Speaker 1: to move forward. But if you set up and say
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna figure it out right now, I don't think
- 11:44Speaker 1: you can have long term success. So I tell people
- 11:47Speaker 1: what you learn in your twenties, whatever you skill you
- 11:50Speaker 1: learning your twenties is what you're gonna be making money
- 11:52Speaker 1: with in your forties and fifties. At thirty year thirty
- 11:55Speaker 1: year period of growth is by the gaining that experience,
- 11:58Speaker 1: so you can't make money. So when I read this
- 12:00Speaker 1: book and I was able to see those little chapters
- 12:02Speaker 1: of those markings, this same hey write something about what
- 12:05Speaker 1: happened to you, I went, she got it, she understands it.
- 12:09Speaker 1: And this this is something I just need a bigger version.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I'm just telling you right now. All right, brother, we're
- 12:14Speaker 1: gonna you know, I write that check seriously because this
- 12:18Speaker 1: book is so beautiful. Because I got this giant book
- 12:21Speaker 1: with Will Smith, all these celebrities. These are everyday people
- 12:25Speaker 1: and when you walk into my home, I would love
- 12:27Speaker 1: to be to put a big version of this book
- 12:29Speaker 1: next to it because these are everyday people talking about
- 12:31Speaker 1: loving their children, experiencing their lifestyle in a very relatable fashion.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Tell us where we where we get the book, tell
- 12:38Speaker 1: us about the work, and get the bookfore we get
- 12:39Speaker 1: out of here. So right now, um we you can
- 12:44Speaker 1: purchase the book online on my website. Soom yeah s
- 12:48Speaker 1: O N I A Jackson Miles M y l E
- 12:52Speaker 1: s dot com. And we're getting ready to uh put
- 12:56Speaker 1: it up on iTunes and uh it will be on Amazon.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Um it will be. We'll go back to Barnes and Noble,
- 13:05Speaker 1: just like we did before Barnes and Noble dot com.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So we are filling the pipeline and um getting ready
- 13:12Speaker 1: for all of our sales. And we we already have
- 13:15Speaker 1: a school district who has said that they're going to
- 13:18Speaker 1: give it to the parents. So I'm like over here screaming,
- 13:20Speaker 1: what a birthday gift? Right, birthday girl, family, birthday girl,
- 13:25Speaker 1: a k A birthday girl. Mom, It's birthday girl. Keep winning, sonya.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I love you. You know that I love you. Thank
- 13:32Speaker 1: you so much. I appreciate you. We'll be right back
- 13:37Speaker 1: with more from marn McDonald and money making conversations don't
- 13:40Speaker 1: touch that time. When I was an FBI agent, I
- 13:43Speaker 1: was aware of home title fraud. There was little we
- 13:45Speaker 1: could do to stop it. Now there's home title lot.
- 13:48Speaker 1: This online bank was for closing on us. They even
- 13:51Speaker 1: had documents that I signed for a home equity loan.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Only I didn't what a nightmare. I didn't have home
- 13:57Speaker 1: title lock then, but you bet I haven't Now. Your

- 15:02Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald will use his business as celebrity relationships to
- 15:06Speaker 1: empower small businesses with information to succeed. We're back continuing
- 15:13Speaker 1: with the greatness of money making conversations. My next guest
- 15:17Speaker 1: was born and raised in Rhode Island, major in chemistry
- 15:20Speaker 1: at the University of Virginia and moved to Houston, Texas
- 15:23Speaker 1: fourteen years ago to pursue a medical equipment sales representative career.
- 15:27Speaker 1: That was back then. She was raised in the family.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Because when I got a bio, you know, I was
- 15:34Speaker 1: really moved by her honesty. She was raised in the
- 15:37Speaker 1: family where they did not have a lot of money,
- 15:39Speaker 1: but they were never aware of it as kids. That's
- 15:41Speaker 1: very assembled in my background. Her dad made twenty six
- 15:43Speaker 1: thousand dollars a year and her mom stayed at home
- 15:46Speaker 1: with her two brothers. I had six sisters and two brothers.
- 15:48Speaker 1: She worked in science labs at university at the University
- 15:51Speaker 1: of Virginia and Brown University, and had and has had
- 15:54Speaker 1: a job since she was ten years old that was
- 15:57Speaker 1: a paper route. She has been called a positivity enthusiast.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I only met this young lady one time, and she's
- 16:03Speaker 1: always she's impacted me personally. Uh. Please welcome to Money
- 16:06Speaker 1: Making Conversation to founder and CEO or Sale Lifestyle and
- 16:09Speaker 1: author of the e book Seven Secrets to Start Up Success.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Please welcome Megan Eddings. Well, what an introduction. Thank you
- 16:19Speaker 1: so much for Sean. Good morning to you. Who is
- 16:22Speaker 1: that person's Well, you know what. The thing about it
- 16:25Speaker 1: is that when I when I when I set up interviews,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I like for people to know there's a story behind them,
- 16:30Speaker 1: there's a journey to the conversation we're about to have
- 16:33Speaker 1: on Money Making Conversations. And before we get started, please
- 16:37Speaker 1: let everybody know how did Megan come into Rishan McDonald's life. Yeah,
- 16:43Speaker 1: you know, I always say you never know where you're
- 16:44Speaker 1: gonna meet someone who's going to change your life. I
- 16:46Speaker 1: was in the Male Mayor Sylvester Turner's List off New
- 16:50Speaker 1: Business competition last year and I made it to the finals,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and I was on stage, made to the finals, and
- 16:56Speaker 1: you were actually the the moderator, the host, and the
- 17:00Speaker 1: comedian of the event. And that's how, yeah, we first met.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And then you were gracious enough to have the winners
- 17:05Speaker 1: on your on your Money Making Conversation show the following week. Yes,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and uh, did you win any money? Sure? Did it?
- 17:13Speaker 1: I want ten thousand dollars for best New Product in
- 17:16Speaker 1: Houston and five hundred dollars for fan favorite. Yeah, you
- 17:19Speaker 1: know the good The great thing about it is that
- 17:22Speaker 1: tell me tell us favorite because your product was still
- 17:24Speaker 1: in the Uh what I could, I say development stage
- 17:27Speaker 1: and tell everybody about your product. Yeah, for sure, for
- 17:30Speaker 1: sure it was. I've definitely come a long way since
- 17:32Speaker 1: last November. But essentially, I was tired of throwing away
- 17:35Speaker 1: my husband's workout close about three years ago because they sunk,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and obviously pretty much almost everyone has this problems with
- 17:42Speaker 1: my science background, I decided to create fabric that basically
- 17:46Speaker 1: keeps you smelling and feeling fresher longer. And yeah, as
- 17:51Speaker 1: actually since we last spoke, the fabric's now patent pending
- 17:53Speaker 1: in a hundred and twenty countries and uh yeah, still
- 17:57Speaker 1: it's beyond the development stage, but I'm still working on it.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Those workout clothes that don't think, well, that's important to know. Now,
- 18:04Speaker 1: how can one walk through that wall of fear? Are
- 18:07Speaker 1: the emotional block of fear? I always called it a
- 18:10Speaker 1: stop side that stop sign sits in front of your
- 18:12Speaker 1: face every time you wake up in the morning. And
- 18:14Speaker 1: it's called fear of fear of change, fear of not
- 18:16Speaker 1: being able to see what I want to do next. Man,
- 18:20Speaker 1: you're exactly right. And so when I was leaving or
- 18:23Speaker 1: thinking of leaving my corporate job, that I literally would
- 18:27Speaker 1: have crippling moments for like a split second of fear,
- 18:30Speaker 1: Like Megan, you can't start your own company. So we
- 18:33Speaker 1: all have this negative chatter that you know, happens in
- 18:35Speaker 1: our head, and some of us were able to handle
- 18:38Speaker 1: it better than others. And so I actually turned to
- 18:41Speaker 1: a lot of podcasts, which is funny mentioned Sarah Blakeley earlier,
- 18:44Speaker 1: because that was the podcast that I turned to. Read
- 18:47Speaker 1: a bunch of books and everything mentions the word fear.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So I said, all right, it's not just me. So
- 18:52Speaker 1: the first thing I tell everybody is you're not alone.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Everybody has fear, whether you make five thousand dollars a
- 18:57Speaker 1: year or your bill gates, I mean, everybody as fear.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It's what you how you mentally channel that fear to
- 19:03Speaker 1: kind of keep pushing forward. So I remember I read it.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I wish I remember what book I read it in,
- 19:08Speaker 1: But it said something like, if you really think about it,
- 19:11Speaker 1: whatever you're fearful of, like oh, I don't have the knowledge,
- 19:14Speaker 1: I don't have the money. You know, whatever you're fearful
- 19:16Speaker 1: and fearful of in life, whether it's business or not,
- 19:20Speaker 1: times out of a hundred, whatever you're fearful of doesn't
- 19:22Speaker 1: even happen. So the fear is kind of just conjured
- 19:25Speaker 1: up in your head and you're giving yourself your own
- 19:27Speaker 1: roadblocks pretty much because your ego wants to keep you
- 19:30Speaker 1: where you are. But I tell everyone, we all have fear.
- 19:33Speaker 1: You're not alone. So just kind of push that fear
- 19:36Speaker 1: aside and just start taking small steps each day. You
- 19:39Speaker 1: don't have to quit your job overnight, but just kind
- 19:41Speaker 1: of keep taking small steps and eventually it becomes easier
- 19:44Speaker 1: and the fear kind of dissipates. Now with that being
- 19:48Speaker 1: saying miss enthusiastic, miss miss you know positivity, because my
- 19:56Speaker 1: store was very similar. Okay. I worked at I b M,
- 20:00Speaker 1: my degrees in mathematics and very successful. People felt I
- 20:04Speaker 1: was right on right where I was supposed to be.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And I told him, hey, I want to be a comedian.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna resigned to be a comedian. I'm gonna I'm gonna.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna walk away from this world that everybody told
- 20:13Speaker 1: me I need to be I need to continue in.
- 20:16Speaker 1: And when I made the decision, I made the decision
- 20:18Speaker 1: one year prior to leaving IBM, and I remember I was,
- 20:23Speaker 1: I was, I was crying. I always had tears in
- 20:26Speaker 1: my eyes because even though this I knew this was
- 20:28Speaker 1: right for me, I didn't really know the future now, IBM.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I kind of figured right, go to work every day,
- 20:35Speaker 1: five days a week. I was gonna get my vacation time,
- 20:37Speaker 1: gonna get my sick days. I had medical benefits when
- 20:40Speaker 1: I invested in my stock portfolio. They're mad. So that
- 20:43Speaker 1: was pretty clean. That's pretty clean. You know, you can
- 20:46Speaker 1: you can understand those rules. But when you say you
- 20:48Speaker 1: want to walk away from that to the unknown, do
- 20:51Speaker 1: you what do you do with your medical benefits? How
- 20:53Speaker 1: do you get that? Okay? I went Cobra, So that
- 20:56Speaker 1: called me down. Okay, I had you know, I didn't
- 20:59Speaker 1: have to for once and my retirement went away, and so, okay,
- 21:03Speaker 1: what does afforded our work week when you're working for yourself?
- 21:06Speaker 1: I had to figure that out. That was the key
- 21:09Speaker 1: right there. What does a forty hour work week when
- 21:12Speaker 1: you're working for yourself? That's where the fear comes in.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And that's when I had to establish lanes of discipline
- 21:19Speaker 1: for myself where I had just set the same rules
- 21:22Speaker 1: that the forty all week jobs set for me. When
- 21:25Speaker 1: I worked for the house a week, I got up
- 21:28Speaker 1: the same time every day. I made a commitment to
- 21:31Speaker 1: be doing something at a scheduled time every day, which
- 21:34Speaker 1: I do. And so once I started putting in place,
- 21:38Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, I started moving forward in
- 21:40Speaker 1: a more positive and much more controlled environment. Because guess what,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I had rules in place about how to be successful
- 21:48Speaker 1: and rules in place about how I can extend this
- 21:51Speaker 1: opportunity by prop through proper planning. That a lot enabled
- 21:55Speaker 1: me to overcome my fear. Megan, Oh yeah, and I
- 21:59Speaker 1: shall laughing. I mean to go from a successful career
- 22:02Speaker 1: at IBM with a MAS degree to a comedian. I
- 22:06Speaker 1: mean that, I'm sure you had fear, And I'm sure
- 22:08Speaker 1: some of the people even closest to you in your
- 22:10Speaker 1: own life thought you were nuts for doing it. Absolutely absolutely.
- 22:13Speaker 1: But you know, but you know, they see me on TV,
- 22:15Speaker 1: they see the names and credits. You know, they always
- 22:17Speaker 1: knew it was gonna happen. They always knew. But I
- 22:21Speaker 1: didn't even know. I'm just letting everybody know. I didn't
- 22:23Speaker 1: even know. But I knew that working where I was
- 22:26Speaker 1: at was not gonna was not gonna satisfy me. I
- 22:29Speaker 1: could see the end of the road. I could see
- 22:30Speaker 1: I could see that darkness, and I could see the
- 22:33Speaker 1: light coming at the end of the tunnel, so I
- 22:35Speaker 1: knew I could see it. When I became an entertainer,
- 22:38Speaker 1: there was no light at the end of the tunnel tunnel,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but there was also no point of saying I should
- 22:43Speaker 1: go in any direction. So for the first time of
- 22:45Speaker 1: my life, I said, you know, I'm gonna take advantage
- 22:47Speaker 1: of every talent that God gave me with no restrictions.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And that's what when you're working for the our job,
- 22:54Speaker 1: it will restrict you because you're only gonna do what
- 22:57Speaker 1: they allow you to do. So that's what locks people in.
- 23:01Speaker 1: That's why entrepreneurship is so big nowadays, because it's designed
- 23:05Speaker 1: to you being able to do what you feel comfortable doing.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I look at people all the time and tell them,
- 23:10Speaker 1: if you're afraid being successful, and my number one quote
- 23:14Speaker 1: is stop reading success stories and start writing your own
- 23:18Speaker 1: success story. That's very important to understand. And so when
- 23:22Speaker 1: I when I wanted you to come on the show,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I just felt your story was was every day. It
- 23:27Speaker 1: was an everyday story in your life. How you grew
- 23:30Speaker 1: up was an everyday story. Just an ordinary family, just
- 23:34Speaker 1: an ordinary young lady who went to college, got a
- 23:36Speaker 1: degree like you supposed to, and you but you wouldn't fearless.
- 23:40Speaker 1: You saw an opportunity and used way away from the
- 23:43Speaker 1: East coast. You came down here not being afraid to relocate.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, when at ultimate ultimate
- 23:50Speaker 1: test of what you want to do with your life,
- 23:53Speaker 1: you said, you know something, I want to be an entrepreneur.
- 23:56Speaker 1: That's why you wrote that book, and that's why you
- 23:59Speaker 1: should read that book. Thank you, thank you. Yeah, and
- 24:04Speaker 1: you know, and I tell everyone when you've done your
- 24:05Speaker 1: own job, you know, number one, what's that quote that
- 24:08Speaker 1: someone says, like, you know, entrepreneurs work eighty hours a
- 24:11Speaker 1: week for themselves, didn't have to work fourty hours a
- 24:13Speaker 1: week for someone else. Um Like, so true, so true.
- 24:16Speaker 1: But you know, if you're successful in your day job
- 24:19Speaker 1: like you were, you already had the tools, you know
- 24:22Speaker 1: to be successful. You just had to tap into new
- 24:24Speaker 1: tools to be successful. What kind of different tools? Ish?
- 24:27Speaker 1: But you had the hustle because you know it was
- 24:30Speaker 1: already in you. Um. But yeah, entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs today versus
- 24:34Speaker 1: probably I don't know, it's twenty years ago, but I'm
- 24:36Speaker 1: not gonna say it's easier. But there definitely are easier things.
- 24:39Speaker 1: The one thing I've found glaringly when I started this journey,
- 24:43Speaker 1: or the amount of people just like yourself for Sean
- 24:46Speaker 1: that want to help. I mean, people truly want to help.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So it's important to surround yourself with that positive, you know,
- 24:53Speaker 1: positive community, people that have done it before you and
- 24:55Speaker 1: I you'll be amazed that you're not you know, you're
- 24:57Speaker 1: not in it alone. If you just kind of put
- 24:59Speaker 1: yourself out there. Yeah, you're sending a question that kind
- 25:02Speaker 1: of you know, I asked by a guest always sending
- 25:04Speaker 1: questions and statements their life for me to ask them.
- 25:06Speaker 1: One that stood. If you said your belief is that
- 25:09Speaker 1: one person can change the world, talk to me, Megan,
- 25:14Speaker 1: oh Man, I say that all the time. I mean
- 25:18Speaker 1: we've all read stories, you know, etcetera, etcetera about you know,
- 25:21Speaker 1: one person literally who's changed the world. But I believe
- 25:24Speaker 1: one person can't because everyone has everyone has something or
- 25:28Speaker 1: multiple things that they are you know, passionate about and
- 25:32Speaker 1: my my personal thing, and I believe everyone needs to
- 25:35Speaker 1: have or not needs to have, but it should have
- 25:37Speaker 1: the legacy they want to leave because we are all
- 25:40Speaker 1: going to meet our maker someday and when someone standing
- 25:43Speaker 1: up there giving your eulogy, you know, what is the
- 25:46Speaker 1: one thing that you want people to say about you?
- 25:48Speaker 1: What is the legacy you want to leave? And kind
- 25:51Speaker 1: of once you know that legacy, every decision for the
- 25:53Speaker 1: rest of your life should be pretty easy. And the
- 25:55Speaker 1: legacy that I personally want to leave is to bring
- 25:58Speaker 1: joy and positivity and to touch people's lives in a
- 26:00Speaker 1: positive way. Um. You know, because of the way our
- 26:03Speaker 1: world is going. You know, it's a lot of negativity
- 26:06Speaker 1: being shown on the media, a lot of things from reading,
- 26:08Speaker 1: a lot of things happening that that shouldn't be happening.
- 26:11Speaker 1: So people need a dose of positivity in their life
- 26:14Speaker 1: and let them know that someone has their back day
- 26:16Speaker 1: and day out. And through Excel Lifestyle and the mission
- 26:18Speaker 1: and movement for Positive Change, I want to create with
- 26:21Speaker 1: my apparel line, I hope to be that positive change.
- 26:24Speaker 1: You are so good, Megan Eden, You're good. You're really good. Uh.
- 26:28Speaker 1: She's from Rhode Island, made her way through the Virginia
- 26:31Speaker 1: Lands and landed in Houston, Texas. A sale lifestyle author
- 26:36Speaker 1: e book Seven Secrets Should Stand Up Success. You keep winning, girl,
- 26:40Speaker 1: because I love you. Thank you love you too. We'll
- 26:49Speaker 1: be right back with more from mar Sean McDonald and
- 26:52Speaker 1: money making conversations don't touch that. When I was an
- 26:55Speaker 1: FBI agent, I was aware of home title fraud. There
- 26:58Speaker 1: was little we could do to stop it. Now there's
- 27:00Speaker 1: home title lock. This online bank was for closing on us.
- 27:04Speaker 1: They even had documents that I signed for a home
- 27:06Speaker 1: equity loan. Only I didn't want a nightmare. I didn't
- 27:10Speaker 1: have home title lock then, but you bet I haven't Now.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Your home's title is online where international thieves can find it.
- 27:17Speaker 1: They'll forge your title, take out loans using your equity,
- 27:20Speaker 1: or sell your home outright. Identity theft programs and insurance
- 27:25Speaker 1: don't protect you for just pennies a day. Home title
- 27:27Speaker 1: lock predicts my most valuable asset, my home. As a
- 27:31Speaker 1: police officer, I've seen what home title fraud does to victims.
- 27:35Speaker 1: So I registered for home title lock, and when I did,

- 27:54Speaker 1: This is Rushan McDonald's host of Money Making Conversation. You
- 27:57Speaker 1: say to yourself, who calls Rushan? Please welcome to money
- 28:01Speaker 1: Making Conversations, Bishop T. D. Jakes. So many people are
- 28:04Speaker 1: going in the business because they have a talent. They
- 28:06Speaker 1: have the talent, but they don't have the terms. And
- 28:09Speaker 1: the terms helps you to be able to escalate the
- 28:12Speaker 1: talent because then you can craft the business model to
- 28:16Speaker 1: protect you because business is a jungle. Every Monday you
- 28:19Speaker 1: can give me live on Money Making Conversations from tim
- 28:22Speaker 1: Am the noon on BIZ eleven Nighty My next guest.
- 28:33Speaker 1: A lot to say about this young man. It's a comedian, actor, director,
- 28:37Speaker 1: television producer, filmmaker. He rose to fame with the critically
- 28:41Speaker 1: acclaimed film Hollywood Shuffle, a satire depicting the trials and
- 28:45Speaker 1: tribulations of black actors in Hollywood. He is a new
- 28:49Speaker 1: documentary film out, making The Five Heartbeats, about his journey
- 28:53Speaker 1: to making the blockbuster iconic film The Five Heartbeats. Please
- 28:57Speaker 1: welcome the Money Making Conversation. The incredible Robert hounsing, thank
- 29:01Speaker 1: you so much for having me. Boys, just go. You
- 29:09Speaker 1: just gotta know how much I love him whenever you know,
- 29:11Speaker 1: when you you know how important he is to my career.
- 29:14Speaker 1: This is the first time and every time I see him,
- 29:16Speaker 1: always hugging and saying, man, you know, you're the reason
- 29:19Speaker 1: I'm where I'm at. He stopping to show stop it.
- 29:22Speaker 1: And I don't laugh this off now because he knows.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Because what happened was in the eighteen when I was
- 29:27Speaker 1: finished doing Steve showed me and the Boars and ABC.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I was. I didn't have no agency. I was just
- 29:32Speaker 1: out there, just basically wild it out in the l a,
- 29:35Speaker 1: you know, as a comedian, and he hired me on
- 29:37Speaker 1: his very popular w B show The Parenthood as a writer.
- 29:41Speaker 1: If he does not hire me as a writer, I
- 29:43Speaker 1: have no foothold in the writing business. Because he knows
- 29:45Speaker 1: how difficulty is for African American writers to even especially
- 29:49Speaker 1: back then, an opportune to the right. And I always
- 29:52Speaker 1: look at him and I thank him. I said, man,
- 29:54Speaker 1: thank you, brother, because I wouldn't be interviewing him right
- 29:57Speaker 1: now because that's his that's his m old. He gives
- 30:00Speaker 1: people an opportunity and that's why he's had such longevity
- 30:04Speaker 1: and such positivity in this business. And that's why I'm
- 30:07Speaker 1: happy to have you on my show man just to
- 30:09Speaker 1: help you out. Well, Brank you so much. I just
- 30:12Speaker 1: want to get this word out about the documentary. But but,
- 30:15Speaker 1: but here's the thing, you know, because you know, you
- 30:18Speaker 1: are the architect of designing and creating and building on
- 30:22Speaker 1: stuff from a business perspective on the way down. So
- 30:25Speaker 1: my whole thing is, uh, this is my new documentary.
- 30:29Speaker 1: It's about the Five Heard Beats. People you know, over
- 30:32Speaker 1: the years love the Five Heartbeats. Over two hundred million
- 30:35Speaker 1: clips have been shared worldwide from this film, and so
- 30:39Speaker 1: people ask me all the time about doing a sequel
- 30:41Speaker 1: or something like that. I could never figure it out.
- 30:44Speaker 1: But sometimes the stories behind the scenes are more you know,
- 30:49Speaker 1: exciting sometimes in the movie. And this documentary is a
- 30:52Speaker 1: roller coaster ridd about how I made The Five Heart Beats.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I saw close to ten thousand actors and open calls
- 30:59Speaker 1: to to to the side on the four guys that
- 31:02Speaker 1: would be in the film. It is my journey with
- 31:05Speaker 1: the Temptations. Because a lot of people don't know that,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you know, initially they think it's the Dells, they think
- 31:10Speaker 1: it's the Temptations. In the documentary, I set the record straight.
- 31:14Speaker 1: But it's a roller coaster ride. And it's like having
- 31:16Speaker 1: a front row seat on the set watching this movie
- 31:20Speaker 1: be made. And so I'm really proud of it. And
- 31:22Speaker 1: it's one night only Fathom Events. If they want to
- 31:24Speaker 1: get tickets, they can google Robert Townson dot com making
- 31:27Speaker 1: the five heart beats. But I'm just excited to talk
- 31:29Speaker 1: to you, so thank thank you again for having me. Okay,
- 31:32Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about a lot though. You can you
- 31:34Speaker 1: can slow down the energy because you get off the air.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I got you for a minute. I got my man,
- 31:38Speaker 1: Robert Townson. So I know you've been doing a lot
- 31:40Speaker 1: of quick I can hear that little quick tone. Thank you. No, no, man,
- 31:46Speaker 1: you're not going anywhere with my friends because we got
- 31:48Speaker 1: to talk about this and got more detail. But also
- 31:51Speaker 1: that career man, that that it's really influenced so many
- 31:53Speaker 1: people today. But I want to let you know about
- 31:55Speaker 1: what Sean McDonald's doing right now for Robert Hownson. You know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: I got the link and I got the social media
- 32:02Speaker 1: post is on all my money making conversation platforms, which
- 32:05Speaker 1: is Facebook, which is Twitter, which is Instagram, is going
- 32:09Speaker 1: up on all my That's the only that's already updated today.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Also will be updated on my ra Sean McDonald fan Club,
- 32:17Speaker 1: which is on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you know. And
- 32:21Speaker 1: so with that being said, that's I got almost a
- 32:23Speaker 1: million followers. So believe me, my friend, I'm doing my part.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And guess what I'm putting boost. I'm buying some boost
- 32:30Speaker 1: on these posts so we can just get it out
- 32:32Speaker 1: even further, because you don't sometimes they just sit there
- 32:34Speaker 1: put that boost on that. Brother. You know, I love it.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I love it. I love it because that's what we're
- 32:40Speaker 1: supposed to do, Robert. That's what we're supposed to do. Man,
- 32:42Speaker 1: we suppose your friend, you know. And and and that's
- 32:44Speaker 1: what social media is a big game changer when we're
- 32:47Speaker 1: out there trying to get our brands out there, and
- 32:50Speaker 1: the only way it's gonna happen. So when they called
- 32:52Speaker 1: me and say hey, Robert Towns and uh want to know,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know, people trying to get the different media out let,
- 32:57Speaker 1: Let's say, come on, really, Robert Townson, Okay, we booting
- 33:01Speaker 1: somebody off the Monday Show, were booting somebody off the money.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Thank you, my brother, I love you. And so so
- 33:10Speaker 1: let's talk about this, Robert, you know, about the five
- 33:12Speaker 1: hearty because my program direct he went, that's my favorite
- 33:15Speaker 1: movie and my favorite movie, and so why is it
- 33:18Speaker 1: and then both of them project manager raised finger that's
- 33:22Speaker 1: my favorite movie too. Uh. You know, I think people
- 33:26Speaker 1: love The Five Heart Beats because there's some some themes
- 33:28Speaker 1: in that film that I think resonate with a lot
- 33:31Speaker 1: of people. You know, it's the rags the richest story.
- 33:34Speaker 1: It's friendship, it's forgiveness, and at the end of the day,
- 33:38Speaker 1: it's family. The five guys are at that you know,
- 33:40Speaker 1: barbecue together and they're still friends and they're still with
- 33:43Speaker 1: their women after all those years, and so I think
- 33:46Speaker 1: it really gives people hope. And you know, and Eddie
- 33:50Speaker 1: King Jr. His story, you know, to go from you know,
- 33:53Speaker 1: being a drug addict and kicked out of the group
- 33:55Speaker 1: to finding God and getting his salvation. I think all
- 33:58Speaker 1: of those things resonate with the audience. I know, he
- 34:01Speaker 1: got kicked out because you know, he would looking good
- 34:03Speaker 1: and had all the women, he had the vos, all
- 34:05Speaker 1: the women. That's my favorite character because it wasn't it
- 34:09Speaker 1: wasn't too far away from the real dude. Well, you know, here,
- 34:13Speaker 1: here's the thing in the in the documentary, I talked
- 34:15Speaker 1: about meeting uh, David Ruffin and and talk about you know,
- 34:19Speaker 1: how David Ruffin really influenced me. And I met with him.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And when I met with him, he was strong out
- 34:24Speaker 1: And I told Keenan. I said, Keena, because Keenan co
- 34:26Speaker 1: wrote the script with me. I said to Keenan, and
- 34:28Speaker 1: I said, Man, we gotta help this brother. Let's still
- 34:31Speaker 1: make him technical advisor, but we're gonna get him in
- 34:33Speaker 1: rehab and we're gonna you know, we're gonna pay for it.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And then you know, it didn't happen because he passed away,
- 34:38Speaker 1: but it was just you know. So so the documentary
- 34:41Speaker 1: is really the journey, you know, because it's my love
- 34:44Speaker 1: of Motown and Detroit and I'm from Chicago, but it's
- 34:47Speaker 1: all that great music and so you know, it's really
- 34:51Speaker 1: I think it's a beautiful journey of an artist, you know.
- 34:53Speaker 1: And I don't think there's ever been a documentary about
- 34:55Speaker 1: a film a black filmmaker who tells his story and
- 34:58Speaker 1: tells and tells it honest and tells it with this
- 35:00Speaker 1: level of passion. So you got this idea and you're
- 35:03Speaker 1: in five hundred theaters, how do you get your idea
- 35:06Speaker 1: to five hundred theaters and then only one particular night
- 35:09Speaker 1: that which means it's event. This is an event tonight, everybody,
- 35:12Speaker 1: this is an event. Your your part of something special,
- 35:15Speaker 1: is something unique. How did that come about? Well, you
- 35:18Speaker 1: know the thing for me, you know, I know your
- 35:20Speaker 1: show is about business and being an entrepreneur, and I
- 35:24Speaker 1: understood that there is an audience out there that loves
- 35:26Speaker 1: the five hard beats. So I went to Fathom Events
- 35:29Speaker 1: and I pitched my vision because they haven't done a
- 35:32Speaker 1: whole lot of events, you know, surrounding content for African Americans,
- 35:36Speaker 1: so this was the first time and I just kind
- 35:39Speaker 1: of looked at a lane and said, hey, I think
- 35:42Speaker 1: there's a big audience for this, and you know, I
- 35:45Speaker 1: want to see and test the frequency. I think we
- 35:47Speaker 1: can make some money on it, and um they I
- 35:50Speaker 1: did the numbers and broke down my power point how
- 35:53Speaker 1: many markets, how many times it plays on television? The
- 35:57Speaker 1: Twitter followers, the Instagram followers and people, they heard the
- 36:01Speaker 1: pitch and they said, wow, we've never done anything like this,
- 36:05Speaker 1: and then they saw the documentary and then once I
- 36:07Speaker 1: posted one time, I think we got close to a
- 36:10Speaker 1: half a million people that were engaged with one post.
- 36:14Speaker 1: So then it's just been growing and growing and growing
- 36:16Speaker 1: and just getting the word out. So I think as
- 36:19Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, you know, you gotta find a lane. You
- 36:22Speaker 1: gotta look at the lane, and then you know, you
- 36:25Speaker 1: take a piece of content like the Five Heart Beats
- 36:27Speaker 1: and say there is still an audience for this film,
- 36:30Speaker 1: and and it all just kind of lined up. They
- 36:32Speaker 1: saw the vision, and uh, I think the documentary is
- 36:35Speaker 1: really good and I'm excited for people to see that. Robert,
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. You amazed me, man um Uh.
- 36:42Speaker 1: When I look at my life, You've played so many
- 36:44Speaker 1: important roles before I knew you. Because here's something really interesting.
- 36:47Speaker 1: When the Hollywood Shuffle came out, I was doing radio
- 36:50Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas, and he had assistant who I still
- 36:54Speaker 1: love to date, Charlie Jordan. She was on my show
- 36:57Speaker 1: and I contacted Charlie Jordan. I said, this movie. I
- 36:59Speaker 1: love this movie. What can I do to help promote
- 37:02Speaker 1: this movie? Because you just struck a nerve. You know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: you struck a nerve back then, you're struck in a
- 37:07Speaker 1: nerve today. How you because you you know how to
- 37:10Speaker 1: connect emotionally with your fan base. That's a gift. Talk
- 37:15Speaker 1: to me about that. You know, I love what I
- 37:20Speaker 1: do and I love my craft, and so when people
- 37:23Speaker 1: look at something that I've created, I've gone through at
- 37:26Speaker 1: least rewrites on any if you if you look at
- 37:30Speaker 1: the Five Heartbeats or Meteor Man, or working on stuff
- 37:35Speaker 1: like Baps with halle Berry or Holiday Hardwood being Rains
- 37:38Speaker 1: and Alfrey Woodard, I really take time to really develop
- 37:42Speaker 1: the material and make sure it's right. And I won't
- 37:46Speaker 1: stop until I find I get perfection. So you know,
- 37:49Speaker 1: I I believe in. I believe to me in life
- 37:52Speaker 1: and business and anything in life, You've got to go
- 37:54Speaker 1: to the extra mile. So I think when people see
- 37:56Speaker 1: anything I create, they know I've gone the extra mile. Okay,
- 38:01Speaker 1: it's the years media man, Yes, sir, I saw this movie.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Been a fan, been a super fan this movie. Why
- 38:09Speaker 1: isn't this show Disney. Why isn't this show now? Why
- 38:13Speaker 1: isn't this show on Amazon Prime? On Netflix? Please help
- 38:18Speaker 1: me with this show. I love this show. Medior Man. Well,
- 38:22Speaker 1: you see you speak in life right now, so it's
- 38:24Speaker 1: probably gonna happen, you know, because you don't. Here's the thing,
- 38:27Speaker 1: I never have repeated myself everything I've ever created, was
- 38:30Speaker 1: unique and different. This is the first time, with this
- 38:32Speaker 1: documentary on the Five Heartbeats, that I'm revisiting any kind
- 38:36Speaker 1: of body of work that I've created. So I think that, um,
- 38:41Speaker 1: you know, I may do a reboot of of media
- 38:43Speaker 1: many There's so many ideas in my brain that I'm
- 38:46Speaker 1: trying to get out, you know that I'm getting now,
- 38:48Speaker 1: not trying, but getting now. And I think that right
- 38:51Speaker 1: now that that's kind of where my head is at,
- 38:53Speaker 1: just creating new art. Well, I'm Jesus um just the
- 38:56Speaker 1: first black superhero family the media. And if you haven't so,
- 39:00Speaker 1: if you have not seen this movie, please watch this movie.
- 39:03Speaker 1: It's very entertaining, still very super relevant today. It was
- 39:07Speaker 1: a black Panther before Black Panther. Let's gonna be real,
- 39:09Speaker 1: It's gonna be real. And and there's a lot of
- 39:12Speaker 1: famous people in this a lot of famous vossovers in there,
- 39:15Speaker 1: Chris Tucker name one. It was voicing a lot of
- 39:18Speaker 1: things and that very open that I've seen the movie
- 39:20Speaker 1: in years, and I still remember how impactful that movie is.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Because three movies this young man has done, I say,
- 39:26Speaker 1: young Robert Townson. Hollywood Shuffle made an impact over Richard's life. Wanted.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I wanted he He made me want to be a
- 39:33Speaker 1: promoter because I was trying to find him so I
- 39:35Speaker 1: could promote his product. Okay, then he comes back with
- 39:38Speaker 1: media Man. When I was writing on the show, that's
- 39:40Speaker 1: when he came out, you know what I'm saying. And
- 39:41Speaker 1: so I was like, wow, this is so you know,
- 39:45Speaker 1: this is a good storytelling because it was so relatable
- 39:49Speaker 1: about an actual family. There were superheroes that but but
- 39:53Speaker 1: they had these skills, but they still have to deal
- 39:55Speaker 1: with the family issues, which is kind of like black
- 39:57Speaker 1: lightning there today. I'm just letting you know this. Sh
- 39:59Speaker 1: he done it, and everybody's kind of like replicating what
- 40:01Speaker 1: he's done. This show now it's really black lightning. Okay,
- 40:05Speaker 1: media Man, Well that you're talking about up up in
- 40:08Speaker 1: a way, Audsity, up up in a way. I had
- 40:10Speaker 1: the superhero family. Medior Man was me with my powers
- 40:14Speaker 1: by myself. That's right, that's right, that's right. That's I apologize.
- 40:19Speaker 1: I apologize, No, no, all good, all good, But but
- 40:22Speaker 1: you know what they got me getting ready to go
- 40:24Speaker 1: on television. I might have to walk out of here.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I just gotta give you heads up because I'm doing
- 40:29Speaker 1: kt l A. Okay, okay, okay, cool. When you don't worry,
- 40:32Speaker 1: just talk to me about your director secment. Episode of
- 40:35Speaker 1: Love Is and Love Is for Oprah's Network and we
- 40:38Speaker 1: just got picked up for another season. It's created by
- 40:42Speaker 1: the the amazing Mara brock a Kill and uh, I
- 40:46Speaker 1: just had It'll make you fall in love. If you
- 40:48Speaker 1: haven't seen the show, it's it's about her, her relationship
- 40:51Speaker 1: with her husband, and it's it's freaking amazing. And then, uh,
- 40:55Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, I'm reoccurring doing a reoccurring
- 40:57Speaker 1: character on Black Lightning and I'm directing of the episodes.
- 41:01Speaker 1: So your instincts are right again, Rashaan. So it's it's
- 41:04Speaker 1: like lovely lovely. So you're you're recently given the Icon
- 41:08Speaker 1: Awards Association in America. Icon Talk talked to us about
- 41:11Speaker 1: that before you get out of here. Well, you know
- 41:14Speaker 1: the thing is that, uh, this organization, you know, was
- 41:18Speaker 1: honoring different people they honored, you know, I just felt
- 41:21Speaker 1: really honored because, you know, the highest because Harry Belafonte
- 41:25Speaker 1: was honored at the same time with me, So it
- 41:28Speaker 1: was just you know, my body of work. I shared
- 41:32Speaker 1: the evening with them. But I just felt like I
- 41:34Speaker 1: still got a lot of work to do. Like when
- 41:35Speaker 1: you say young man, I still feel it feel really young.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Like Black Black Enterprise gave me an award and I
- 41:41Speaker 1: kind of a ward the other you know, like a
- 41:43Speaker 1: few months back with John Lewis, and I was like,
- 41:46Speaker 1: I can't be in the room with John Lewis. This
- 41:48Speaker 1: man is still fighting the good fight. So I gotta
- 41:50Speaker 1: step up on my game and do a lot of work.
- 41:52Speaker 1: But but I just want to say thank you for
- 41:54Speaker 1: taking all this time. I don't mean the rush they
- 41:56Speaker 1: got running me into the studio now, but I just
- 41:58Speaker 1: want to say to today. I just wanna let the
- 42:02Speaker 1: fans know, if you're a fan of The Five Hard Beats,
- 42:05Speaker 1: go to the theaters today one night only. It is
- 42:08Speaker 1: making the Five Heard Beats and you won't be disappointed.
- 42:11Speaker 1: It's a beautiful journey with a filmmaker and how I
- 42:14Speaker 1: made that movie, the ups and downs, and it will
- 42:16Speaker 1: inspire you. And if you're just an entrepreneur, because I
- 42:19Speaker 1: know that's what this show is about, you'll see, you know,
- 42:22Speaker 1: a muscle being used like never before to create something
- 42:25Speaker 1: out of nothing. So thank you, thank you so much
- 42:28Speaker 1: for having me. My brother, I will talk with you.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Let me keep promoting. Do your think everybody high. We'll
- 42:33Speaker 1: be right back with more from Marjohn McDonald and money
- 42:36Speaker 1: making conversations. Don't touch that. When I was an FBI agent,
- 42:40Speaker 1: I was aware of home title fraud. There was little
- 42:42Speaker 1: we could do to stop it. Now there's home title luck.
- 42:45Speaker 1: This online bank was for closing on us. They even
- 42:48Speaker 1: had documents that I signed for a home equity loan.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Only I didn't want a nightmare. I didn't have home
- 42:54Speaker 1: title luck then, but you bet I haven't now. Your
- 42:57Speaker 1: homes title is online where international thieves can find it.

- 44:57Speaker 1: and a mom. That's a lot going on, please, money
- 45:00Speaker 1: making conversation to founder a Provo pizza bar, Donna Teller
- 45:04Speaker 1: or Paya Hello, Hello, how you doing down? To tell?
- 45:08Speaker 1: That's a beautiful name. By the way, that's just I'm
- 45:12Speaker 1: just telling that that name, you know, something like my
- 45:13Speaker 1: name is Roshan. I think I got a pretty cool name.
- 45:16Speaker 1: But Donna Tella, Donna Teller though, Donna, that that's a name.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Bo They got some money associated with that name. Success
- 45:23Speaker 1: had to go with that name. Yeah, growing up everyone
- 45:29Speaker 1: makes fun of me. But now now I'm laughing at that.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Go on now because that name was associated with money. See,
- 45:34Speaker 1: if I know you young, I would have told you, girl,
- 45:37Speaker 1: you're gonna make some money with that name. The people
- 45:40Speaker 1: there about rihardshan Rishaw McDonald man that name. You're gonna
- 45:44Speaker 1: make some money with that name. So Donna tell her, girl,
- 45:48Speaker 1: I'll be in New York this weekend, Labor Day weekend,
- 45:51Speaker 1: and you got this restaurant. We're gonna talk about a lot.
- 45:53Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about a lot because I want to
- 45:54Speaker 1: talk about that transition you made as a lawyer, because
- 45:57Speaker 1: you know where I go. I go through these bios
- 45:59Speaker 1: on Money Made Conversation, and I got you for two breaks,
- 46:02Speaker 1: which I think it's very fortunate because I know you're
- 46:03Speaker 1: very busy, and I always talk about these transitional moments,
- 46:07Speaker 1: how you live a balance life, and and and You've
- 46:10Speaker 1: done so many unique things with your life that I
- 46:12Speaker 1: gotta get the story out. But first, Rashan McDonald's gonna
- 46:15Speaker 1: be I'm ribbing in h New York on US Sunday morning,
- 46:20Speaker 1: so I gotta go check in. You know wantlet you're
- 46:21Speaker 1: check in the hotel of the three pm. Okay, So
- 46:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna throw my luggage to the to the Beilman,
- 46:27Speaker 1: and at noontime, I'm gonna get me some pizza. Let
- 46:33Speaker 1: me tell Let me tell you some about Rashan McDonald.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I love Hamburgers. I can't get enough of Hamburger. I mean,
- 46:39Speaker 1: I cannot get enough of hamburg and I cannot get
- 46:42Speaker 1: enough of pizza. Lord have mercy. I just love me
- 46:46Speaker 1: some pizza now now, I was happy about getting you
- 46:49Speaker 1: on the show because your show, because you're an artisan.
- 46:53Speaker 1: When he comes, that's a that's a certain style of
- 46:55Speaker 1: pizza that you do. That's correct. This is this is
- 46:59Speaker 1: not your every pizza. My father was born in Naples,
- 47:03Speaker 1: which is the birthplace of pizza, and I studied with
- 47:06Speaker 1: master chefs in Naples on how to make pizza. And
- 47:08Speaker 1: I've created a very unique type of pizza with um
- 47:13Speaker 1: ancient grains, and we do a slow rise, so we
- 47:16Speaker 1: let our dough rise over three days, so we use
- 47:19Speaker 1: very very little used which makes a very light and
- 47:21Speaker 1: digestible dough. And we use premium toppings, nothing but the preservatives,
- 47:27Speaker 1: fresh tomato sauce, fresh the best mozzarella from Italy Galbani.
- 47:32Speaker 1: So we really take pride in in our pizza and
- 47:36Speaker 1: most importantly, it is delicious. That's important. The brand of
- 47:42Speaker 1: social media play in your personal life and your professional
- 47:45Speaker 1: life and getting the word about all about your brand.
- 47:47Speaker 1: How important to social media? Yeah, I mean it's it's
- 47:50Speaker 1: it's full important. It's how the young people communicate to
- 47:55Speaker 1: all and we help to keep keep up with it.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I started. I mean, how I got into such TV
- 48:00Speaker 1: is because when I first opened the restaurant. I didn't
- 48:03Speaker 1: know anyone I had. I didn't have the same soft
- 48:06Speaker 1: fighting now a well being budget, and night was just
- 48:08Speaker 1: all gross fRoots and know how to get the world out.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So I started on local TV and then I always
- 48:14Speaker 1: was with technology and I was one of the first
- 48:17Speaker 1: people in about them to use UM the open table
- 48:20Speaker 1: system which is now everywhere, because I didn't think people
- 48:24Speaker 1: are actually gonna make reservations where I wanted to. You know,
- 48:28Speaker 1: if you came into my restaurant, it's all about personal service.
- 48:31Speaker 1: If you have your favorite table and your your favorite meal,
- 48:35Speaker 1: and if I make you feel like a million bucks
- 48:37Speaker 1: from you come in, I know I'm I'm gonna get
- 48:39Speaker 1: you and have a customer for life. So on social
- 48:42Speaker 1: media hit two, it's so important everyone from in the
- 48:45Speaker 1: case to social media, the bad and the ugly. You know,
- 48:48Speaker 1: everyone thinks the critic too, and a lot of people
- 48:50Speaker 1: don't know about when they come and they they criticize
- 48:54Speaker 1: things that they don't know about. UM. But I think
- 48:58Speaker 1: it's I think it's great. Uh, it's it's the wave
- 49:01Speaker 1: of the future. It's not going anywhere. That's how we
- 49:02Speaker 1: communicate today. UM. It's really interesting on top of it.
- 49:07Speaker 1: It's really interesting when I I love who you are.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I love the fact that you are a decision maker
- 49:13Speaker 1: in your personal life even though people are telling you
- 49:15Speaker 1: you should do this. That's a mature decision that you
- 49:18Speaker 1: made at twenty six years of age. But now you
- 49:20Speaker 1: have such a great balance life. You're a wonderful husband,
- 49:22Speaker 1: your your mother. How does that balanced life play a
- 49:25Speaker 1: part in your life with all these yes, sure, I
- 49:30Speaker 1: I agree. You know. Um, money is not my god,
- 49:35Speaker 1: it's it's it's money. I think it's important that balance life.
- 49:40Speaker 1: It's so importanting and actually I'm feeling heavy because I'm
- 49:43Speaker 1: pregnant with twins as we speak. So, um, I met
- 49:48Speaker 1: my husband later in life. He's a he's a whole.
- 49:52Speaker 1: But it's it's really really important to choose that balance
- 49:58Speaker 1: in your life. And if you it's it's only work
- 50:01Speaker 1: all the time. And for me, it was worked for many,
- 50:03Speaker 1: many years, but I still managed to work. But I've
- 50:06Speaker 1: changed the definition. I used to have high end dining
- 50:10Speaker 1: restaurants and I moved into upscale quick service because I
- 50:14Speaker 1: wanted to scale and create a platform but still have
- 50:18Speaker 1: time to be home with my family. So that was
- 50:20Speaker 1: a decision based on my personal life too, because I
- 50:25Speaker 1: want to Yeah, you can't. You can't mess up being
- 50:27Speaker 1: a parent, you know, you can't. You don't have a
- 50:29Speaker 1: duel over there with that. So, um, I wanted to.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I wanted to strike the balance. But I'm still a
- 50:37Speaker 1: woman that needs to work and that's driven and creative,
- 50:41Speaker 1: and I think that's important for my son to see
- 50:43Speaker 1: as well. So I think it's yeah, you gotta just
- 50:47Speaker 1: gotta keep that in mind constantly. Um, and I'm able
- 50:51Speaker 1: to um turn it on and off bee that business
- 50:54Speaker 1: person and then trying to be the mom and and
- 50:57Speaker 1: try and you have to be just very highly organ efficient.
- 51:02Speaker 1: And you know you're about to go from tweening, you
- 51:08Speaker 1: got to go about to go from mom the super mom.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Now you know that. Oh my gosh, I can't believe
- 51:14Speaker 1: it's happening. I'm still in shocked. Well, well, I think
- 51:18Speaker 1: it happens because you know, first of all, God plays
- 51:21Speaker 1: is rolling all this and you want it, you know,
- 51:24Speaker 1: you you you know, like you said, you can't do
- 51:26Speaker 1: a do over, and and that's important that you said. Like,
- 51:29Speaker 1: I have a daughter, she's twenty one, and I know that,
- 51:32Speaker 1: you know, when she called me and said Dad, I
- 51:34Speaker 1: love you, Dad. Could you help me? Dad? What about this?
- 51:37Speaker 1: That is so cool to me? When you when you
- 51:40Speaker 1: get to that stage, you're gonna really appreciate it's the best.
- 51:43Speaker 1: You know, it's the best that you know. All you
- 51:46Speaker 1: want in life is like your dad did for you.
- 51:48Speaker 1: He just wanted your life to be better than his life.
- 51:50Speaker 1: He was an immigrant, Okay. And then you've done those
- 51:53Speaker 1: things you've done, You've exceeded his expectation. Even like you said,
- 51:55Speaker 1: your son his son or restaurant on it. When you
- 51:58Speaker 1: were sitting down and this, this idea, this is what
- 52:01Speaker 1: I want to do in my life came about. And
- 52:03Speaker 1: so when I when I think about all these things,
- 52:04Speaker 1: and I think the fact that you said, Richard, look,
- 52:07Speaker 1: I was successful over here, but I didn't needed the balance.
- 52:09Speaker 1: So I went to a different style of restaurants of
- 52:13Speaker 1: serving serving your community in the food world because it
- 52:16Speaker 1: fits your lifestyle better. And that's what that's what the
- 52:19Speaker 1: restaurant a gram Sister station. It fits your lifestyle better.
- 52:22Speaker 1: But it's also amazing food and it's healthy food, absolutely food.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Because I want to let me just say something right
- 52:28Speaker 1: quick through there's a lot of people run way. They
- 52:30Speaker 1: hear the word healthy. You know what I'm saying, No, no, no, no, no.
- 52:34Speaker 1: Great food done the right way. You know, she's the
- 52:38Speaker 1: right way. You know the dough. You know when I
- 52:42Speaker 1: stay healthy, I'm saying, like, for example, give you an
- 52:45Speaker 1: example mastarella. People don't realize Americans look for the whitest
- 52:49Speaker 1: mazzarella out there. That means there's constans in it. That's
- 52:53Speaker 1: what it means when you I'm talking about healthy. Just
- 52:56Speaker 1: start getting the best chemicals and knowing the difference. And
- 53:04Speaker 1: and so for me, I researched and I used the
- 53:06Speaker 1: best products, whether it's from Italy or New York. I
- 53:10Speaker 1: give the people the best product and they know it.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Tastes that are all at junk folding and preservatives that
- 53:18Speaker 1: are cheaper, and then you feel like gross afterwards. Honestly,
- 53:23Speaker 1: it's delicious. Just tell everybody when they can find it.
- 53:26Speaker 1: And then I'm a wrapping up with Roshan McDonald. Stop
- 53:28Speaker 1: tell everybody, Donna Tellizzarro. The pizza bar on the lower

- 53:56Speaker 1: don't do that because with Sean McDonald's eating with Sean
- 53:58Speaker 1: McDonald gonna have his meat lover's pizza because it would
- 54:01Speaker 1: be a square because she told me it comes to
- 54:02Speaker 1: square and the meat them and the saut is gonna
- 54:04Speaker 1: be to the edge because artisanal pizzas normally don't do that,
- 54:07Speaker 1: but at provar Pizza Ball they do it like that.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Then Roshan gonna tell wait for your excuse me, give
- 54:13Speaker 1: me a strong bowlie I wanted to go, and then
