- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Hello and welcome to Connecting the Dots.
- 0:17I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. It is Tuesday, December
- 0:2030th, 2025, and here in Sacramento, we're starting
- 0:23the day with a dense fog advisory, so. Please
- 0:27be careful out there on the roads until about
- 0:29noon. Yeah, and nationally it's a bit more intense.
- 0:31The big story is heavy lake effects, snow, downwind
- 0:34of lakes Erie and Ontario. That's expected to
- 0:37last right through New Year's Day. And we can
- 0:39even see some snow squalls on New Year's Eve.
- 0:42So, you know, travel plans might get a little
- 0:43complicated there. Also keep an eye on elevated
- 0:46fire weather conditions continuing in the southern
- 0:48plains and the southeast. A lot going on. Now
- 0:51a quick look at the markets. The Dow closed a
- 0:52little lower yesterday at 48 ,359 .23, down about
- 0:580 .16%. The S &P 500 was basically flat. It finished
- 1:02at 6 ,902 .08, up just 0 .02%. But Bitcoin had
- 1:07a really strong day. It closed at 88 ,802 .76.
- 1:11That's a jump of almost 2%. Nice. Okay, before
- 1:14we jump into our top stories, we want to thank
- 1:15our fantastic sponsor, Old Glory. If you're looking
- 1:18for, you know, iconic music and sports fan merch,
- 1:21they are absolutely the place to go. I mean,
- 1:24it's great stuff, perfect for that techie friend
- 1:26you might still be shopping for. It is, and because
- 1:28you're listening, you can get 15 % off your entire
- 1:30purchase. All you have to do is use the promo
- 1:32code SNARFL at checkout. Just head over to OldGlory
- 1:36.com. All right, let's get into it. We're breaking
- 1:39down the top three tech stories from our internal
- 1:42report, The Morningstar. And the first story
- 1:44is a big one. Looks like Meta just made a massive
- 1:48move to change its entire business strategy.
- 1:51That's right. They're acquiring a Singapore -based
- 1:54AI startup called Manus. And get this, the price
- 1:57tag is more than $2 billion. $2 billion. Wow.
- 2:01So this isn't just another tech acquisition.
- 2:03This is Meta basically buying an enterprise business
- 2:07overnight. That's the perfect way to put it.
- 2:09For years, Metta has only really made money from
- 2:11AI indirectly, you know, by improving its ad
- 2:14targeting on Facebook and Instagram. Right. Meanwhile,
- 2:17you've got Microsoft, Google, Amazon, all selling
- 2:20cloud and AI services directly to businesses.
- 2:23Metta was kind of on the sidelines. Exactly.
- 2:26This deal gives them an instant serious presence
- 2:29in that market. And Manus isn't some tiny startup.
- 2:32It's a real business, reportedly well past $100
- 2:35million in annual recurring revenue. OK, but
- 2:37hang on. Meta has spent, what, billions and billions
- 2:40on its own internal AI research? Why buy Manus?
- 2:44Is this sort of an admission that their own efforts
- 2:47to build an enterprise tool just didn't work
- 2:49out? That's a great question. I think it really
- 2:51comes down to speed and a proven product. Meta
- 2:54has the powerful models, but Manus has the customers
- 2:57and the pipeline. And the leadership, right.
- 2:59The co -founder and CEO, Sha Hong, he goes by
- 3:01red. He's joining Meta as a vice president. Yes,
- 3:04but here's the really telling part. He's not
- 3:06reporting to the head of AI. He's reporting directly
- 3:09to Metta's COO, Javier Olivan. Oh, OK. So for
- 3:12everyone listening, that's the key. Reporting
- 3:14to the chief operating officer means this is
- 3:16about business, about revenue, about integration
- 3:19right now. It's not a research project. Precisely.
- 3:21And what they're buying is something called Egentic
- 3:23AI. This is a huge step up from your standard
- 3:26chat bot. So this isn't just about generating
- 3:28text or images? Not at all. We're talking about
- 3:31systems that can execute complex, multi -sep
- 3:34workflows all on their own. Think of it as an
- 3:37autonomous agent for business tasks. What does
- 3:39that actually look like in practice? Well, Manus'
- 3:42agents can handle things like market research,
- 3:44writing code, complex data analysis, all without
- 3:48a human stepping in for every little thing. Wow.
- 3:51The numbers are pretty staggering. Manes claims
- 3:53they've processed over 147 trillion tokens and
- 3:58powered over 80 million virtual computers just
- 4:01since March of this year. That's an incredible
- 4:03amount of work being done. So what does this
- 4:06mean for us? regular users of, say, WhatsApp
- 4:09or Instagram. Is the Meta AI Assistant going
- 4:12to get a major upgrade? It absolutely is. They're
- 4:14going to keep Manus as a standalone subscription
- 4:16service for businesses, but they're also integrating
- 4:18the tech across the board. So my Meta AI could
- 4:20go from just answering questions to actually
- 4:22doing things for me. Exactly. Imagine planning
- 4:25a party. Instead of just helping you write an
- 4:27invitation, the AI could autonomously manage
- 4:29your RSVPs on Facebook, coordinate with vendors
- 4:32through WhatsApp, maybe even handle ticket sales
- 4:35on Instagram. That's a whole different ballgame.
- 4:38It's moving from a creative tool to a genuine
- 4:40assistant. It's a strategic partner. Now, here's
- 4:44where the story gets really, really interesting
- 4:46from a geopolitical standpoint. Right, because
- 4:48Manus wasn't originally a Singaporean company.
- 4:51No, it was founded in China, though it moved
- 4:53its headquarters to Singapore in the middle of
- 4:552025. Metta is being incredibly careful here.
- 4:59They're de -risking the whole deal, aren't they?
- 5:01Trying to avoid the kind of political scrutiny
- 5:03we've seen with other tech deals involving China.
- 5:06100%. They are severing all of Manus' remaining
- 5:09ties to China. They're taking 100 % ownership,
- 5:13winding down all China -based operations. So
- 5:16their local AI assistant there, Monica .cn, that's
- 5:19getting shut down. It is. They're also eliminating
- 5:21all Chinese ownership stakes and relocating employees.
- 5:24It's a complete clean break to make sure the
- 5:27tech and the company operate squarely under U
- 5:29.S. and international rules. Which is very different
- 5:32from that scale deal earlier in the year where
- 5:34they only took a minority stake. This time, they're
- 5:37buying the whole thing. Total control. It's a
- 5:39massive strategic play to kick off 2026, a new
- 5:42revenue stream and a huge tech upgrade. A huge
- 5:46move indeed. And, you know, speaking of high
- 5:49stakes bets, that brings us perfectly to our
- 5:51next story. Yes, it does. We're shifting from
- 5:53Metta to SoftBank, who just completed a truly
- 5:57colossal investment. We're talking about their
- 5:59massive $40 billion investment commitment to
- 6:02OpenAI. It's finally complete. That's right.
- 6:05The last payment, somewhere around $22 billion,
- 6:08was sent last week. That brings SoftBank's total
- 6:11stake in OpenAI to over 10%. And the valuation
- 6:14is just... it's mind -boggling. They finalized
- 6:17this at a $260 billion pre -money valuation.
- 6:20It's a number that's hard to even wrap your head
- 6:22around, and a lot of that money is already earmarked
- 6:24for a truly ambitious project. You're talking
- 6:26about Stargate. I am, the joint venture with
- 6:29Oracle and SoftBank. It's this, um... almost
- 6:31unbelievably huge AI infrastructure and data
- 6:34center project. We're hearing rumored numbers
- 6:36around $500 billion for Stargate. I mean, that's
- 6:39an almost unimaginable amount of money for an
- 6:41infrastructure buildout. It is, because they're
- 6:43not just building for today's AI. They're building
- 6:46for the next generation of models, multimodal
- 6:48systems that can handle text, video, robotics,
- 6:52things that require computing power that frankly
- 6:54doesn't even exist yet. So it's a bet on the
- 6:57entire future paradigm of AI. Which you'd think
- 7:00would be great news for harbor companies you
- 7:02would think but this is where the story takes
- 7:04a fascinating and for many a shocking turn to
- 7:08help pay for this massive open ai commitment
- 7:10softbank sold its entire stake in nvidia every
- 7:13single share a 5 .8 billion dollar position that
- 7:16they've been building since 2020 gone that is
- 7:19That's the real signal here. They are making
- 7:22a hard pivot a very hard pivot They're trading
- 7:24their exposure to AI hardware, the chips, the
- 7:27GPUs from Nvidia, for a massive stake in the
- 7:30AI software and model side with OpenAI. So the
- 7:33bet is that OpenAI's intelligence, the model
- 7:35itself, will be more valuable in the long run
- 7:38than the actual silicon it runs on. That is the
- 7:40thesis, yes. But the market seems, well, skeptical
- 7:44to say the least. SoftBank stock has dropped
- 7:4640 % since October. 40%. That is a brutal drop.
- 7:50It seems like some analysts are starting to see
- 7:52SoftBank as a kind of canary in the coal mine
- 7:55for the AI stock boom. It's a definite warning
- 7:58sign. The market is pricing in the enormous risk
- 8:00of making a bet this concentrated and this far
- 8:03out into the future. And the risks are everywhere.
- 8:06I mean, SoftBank might have to take on debt to
- 8:07meet all these commitments. And OpenAI itself
- 8:10isn't even expected to be profitable until 2028
- 8:13at the earliest. And on top of that, the competition
- 8:15is finally here. For the first time, OpenAI is
- 8:18facing a serious, well -funded challenger in
- 8:21Alphabet's Gemini 3 .0. Right. Some experts are
- 8:24already saying Gemini is actually better than
- 8:26OpenAI's GPT 5 .1 at certain tasks, like complex
- 8:29reasoning. So the race is on, and OpenAI needs
- 8:32this war chest. But what does this all mean for
- 8:35you, the individual investor listening to this?
- 8:37Should you sell your Nvidia stock? No, definitely
- 8:40not. You have to take SoftBank's moves with a
- 8:42huge grain of salt, their scale, their goals.
- 8:45It's a completely different world from a personal
- 8:47portfolio. Right. A 40 % stock drop is something
- 8:50they can absorb. Most of us cannot. But it is
- 8:53a really good moment to maybe take a look at
- 8:55your own portfolio. Exactly. NVIDIA has had such
- 8:58an incredible run -up, you might be way more
- 9:00concentrated in that one stock than you realize.
- 9:03It's still a fantastic company, fundamentally.
- 9:04Of course. But this is a great reminder from
- 9:06the market that rebalancing is important. Concentration
- 9:09risk is always real. That is an excellent point.
- 9:13OK, from two giants making very loud, very public
- 9:16moves, our final story. is about a global power
- 9:21making a move that is much quieter but maybe
- 9:24just as powerful. Yes. We're talking about China
- 9:26and a critical shift in the global semiconductor
- 9:28supply chain. This is a big one. So what's happening
- 9:31is that China is enforcing a quiet, mostly undocumented
- 9:36rule for its chipmakers. Right. The rule is this.
- 9:39If you want to add new production capacity, at
- 9:42least 50 % of the equipment you buy has to be
- 9:45made domestically in China. And this isn't just
- 9:47a suggestion. It sounds like it's a mandate.
- 9:49It absolutely is. It's a direct response to the
- 9:52US export restrictions from 2023, the ones that
- 9:55banned sales of advanced AI chips and chip making
- 9:57equipment to China. So the message is, if we
- 10:00can't buy your advanced tools, we're going to
- 10:03force our industry to build and buy our own.
- 10:06Precisely. The long term goal, part of President
- 10:09Xi Jinping's whole nation effort, is to get to
- 10:12100 % domestic equipment. Complete self -sufficiency.
- 10:16How are they even enforcing this if it's not
- 10:18an official documented policy? Through the approval
- 10:21process. If a chip maker wants to build a new
- 10:23plant or expand an old one, they have to submit
- 10:26their procurement plans. If those plans don't
- 10:28hit that 50 % domestic threshold, the application
- 10:31gets rejected. Typically, yes, it's an incredibly
- 10:33effective way to steer the market. And it immediately
- 10:36puts the squeeze on foreign suppliers from the
- 10:39U .S., Japan, Europe. Even if their equipment
- 10:43is available and maybe even better they're getting
- 10:45pushed out it forces Chinese companies to prioritize
- 10:48local vendors It's a very aggressive industrial
- 10:51policy now There is a little flexibility for
- 10:54the most advanced production lines where Chinese
- 10:56equipment just isn't quite ready yet for now
- 10:58for now But they are making huge progress and
- 11:02it's all backed by a ton of government money.
- 11:04You mean the big fund. Yep The third phase of
- 11:07that fund launched in 2024 with 344 billion yuan,
- 11:12which is about 49 billion US dollars. That is
- 11:15a serious investment in national self -reliance.
- 11:18And are we seeing results from this yet? We are,
- 11:20especially in critical areas like etching technology,
- 11:23which is used to carve the circuits onto the
- 11:26silicon. Local companies like Narda Technology
- 11:29are closing the gap really, really fast. And
- 11:31we're seeing the orders reflect that. State -backed
- 11:34companies have placed a record number of orders
- 11:36for domestic lithography machines and parts just
- 11:38this year. That's the clearest sign that the
- 11:41mandate is working. It's fundamentally shifting
- 11:43the supply chain directing billions of dollars
- 11:45inward to build up their own capabilities. So
- 11:48we have three massive stories to wrap up the
- 11:50year. Meta buying its way into the enterprise,
- 11:53SoftBank making this huge pivot from AI hardware
- 11:56to software, and China quietly mandating technological
- 12:00self -sufficiency. It's a lot to process. Before
- 12:03we sign off though, we do want to thank another
- 12:04one of our great sponsors, SCONI. SCONI is the
- 12:07premium golf shoe store. Their gear is amazing,

- 12:23That's S -K -O -N -I dot com dot com. Okay, so
- 12:28to recap. Meta's $2 billion play with Menace,
- 12:33SoftBank's $40 billion gamble on OpenAI, and
- 12:36China's push for 50 % domestic chips. You know,
- 12:38the common thread through all three of these
- 12:40stories is that tech isn't just about innovation
- 12:42anymore. It's really about strategic control.
- 12:45That's it, exactly. Control over revenue streams,
- 12:48control over the future of AI models, and control
- 12:50over the means of production. It feels like the
- 12:52real tension now is between the idea of an open
- 12:55global market and this push for national technological
- 12:59sovereignty. That's what will define the future
- 13:00of AI and Silicon. The real battle isn't just
- 13:03hardware versus software. It's about who controls
- 13:05their own technological destiny. We're here to
