- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots from the
- 0:17Snarfl Solutions Group. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan.
- 0:20We're here to break down what's really happening
- 0:21in tech, policy, finance, and, well, how it all
- 0:24connects. Yep. Figure out what actually matters.
- 0:27So it is Monday, September 22nd, 2025. And here
- 0:31in Sacramento, it's looking like a hot one. Sunny,
- 0:34a high of 95 Fahrenheit expected today. Stay
- 0:37cool out there. Nationally, though, a bit more
- 0:40active. There's a risk for severe weather flash
- 0:43floods, winds, hail stretching from the Great
- 0:45Lakes down into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.
- 0:47Right. also across the central and southern plains.
- 0:50Plus, keep an eye on the Atlantic, it's still
- 0:52active, causing some high waves and rip currents
- 0:55on the east coast. Definitely. Okay, some better
- 0:57news, especially for Bay Area folks. Giants won.
- 1:00Yes, took down the Dodgers yesterday 3 -1. Nice,
- 1:03solid win. Felt good. Spencer Bivens got the
- 1:06W, and Christian Kos went 2 -4 -4. Always good
- 1:09to beat LA, right? Absolutely, we'll take that.
- 1:12Okay, quick look at the markets before we jump
- 1:14in. Yeah, let's do it. So, Friday's close. Pretty
- 1:17quiet for the big indices. The Dow Jones was
- 1:20down just a quarter percent. That's about 114
- 1:22points. Closed at 46 ,092 .41. And the S &P 500?
- 1:27Basically flat. I mean, really flat. Down 0 .30
- 1:30points. Not even a percentage change to speak
- 1:33of. Landed at 6 ,653 .98. But, oh, Bitcoin? Different
- 1:39story there. Took a bit of a tumble. Yeah, down
- 1:422 .31%. That's, let's say, over $2 ,600 off.
- 1:46Closed around $112 ,632. Still volatile, which,
- 1:50you know, actually ties into one of our stories
- 1:52later. It does indeed. OK, before we get to the
- 1:54main event, just want to give a quick shout out
- 1:56to our sponsor, Pins and Aces. That's Pins and
- 1:58Aces and Aces. They've got really great premium
- 2:00golf apparel, accessories, all that good stuff.

- 2:14substantial. Find them online at pinsandaces
- 2:16.com. Pinsandaces .com. Check them out. OK. Let's
- 2:20get into our Morningstar report. Three big stories
- 2:23today, all kind of orbiting this theme of...
- 2:25control and stability online. First up, TikTok.
- 2:29Ah, yes, the never -ending saga of TikTok's U
- 2:32.S. operations. This is about the forced sale
- 2:35from his Chinese parent, ByteDance. Right. because
- 2:38of those national security worries exactly that
- 2:41law passed last year under biden is forcing the
- 2:43issue but the new development is who president
- 2:46trump is now saying is uh likely to be involved
- 2:49in the american group buying it and it's some
- 2:51heavy hitters we knew larry ellison from oracle
- 2:53was in the mix mostly for the data side of things
- 2:55right oracle is managing the data the privacy
- 2:57components but the new names dropped are michael
- 3:01dell yes that michael dell ceo of dell technologies
- 3:04and rupert murdoch and his son lachlan whoa okay
- 3:07The Dell part is interesting, but the Murdochs,
- 3:11that has a whole different dimension. We're talking
- 3:12Fox Corporation here. Well, that's the nuance,
- 3:15isn't it? Sources are saying Lachlan might not
- 3:16be involved individually, but Fox Corporation
- 3:19itself, the conservative media giant behind Fox
- 3:21News, could be a player. That's fascinating.
- 3:25You've got this massive youth culture platform,
- 3:29170 million users in the US alone, potentially
- 3:33having ownership ties to a major conservative...
- 3:36media outlet. It really shifts the conversation,
- 3:38doesn't it? Beyond just data security. Now it's
- 3:40about potential influence, maybe even content
- 3:43direction down the line. Trump called the involved
- 3:45parties American patriots. So the framing is
- 3:48definitely political. And there's more structure
- 3:50coming into focus to the White House. Apparently
- 3:53detailed the board set up over the weekend. Yeah,
- 3:55this is key. The controlling board for the U
- 3:57.S. entity will have seven seats. Six of those
- 4:00seven must be Americans. Six out of seven. OK.
- 4:03And the biggest piece. U .S. control over the
- 4:05algorithm. That's the linchpin. The deal reportedly
- 4:08involves the U .S. having control over TikTok's
- 4:10recommendation algorithm. That's the secret sauce,
- 4:13right? Absolutely. That's the engine. Control
- 4:14the algorithm. You control what people see, what
- 4:16trends take off. This isn't just a sale. It's
- 4:19potentially reshaping a huge chunk of the digital
- 4:22public square. Big implications for you if you're
- 4:25one of those 170 million users. Huge. It's about
- 4:28security, influence, the future of online content.
- 4:32Okay, shifting gears now from algorithms of influence
- 4:35to, well, algorithms of finance. Let's talk Ethereum.
- 4:40Right. Vitalik Buterin, the co -founder, he's
- 4:42got this vision for how Ethereum can become sustainable
- 4:44long -term, and he's using a pretty interesting
- 4:47comparison. Yeah, he's basically saying that
- 4:49low -risk DeFi decentralized finance needs to
- 4:52become Ethereum's Google search. Meaning? Meaning,
- 4:55think about Google. Search and the ads around
- 4:58it, that's their cash cow. It's stable, reliable
- 5:00revenue. And that massive income funds everything
- 5:03else they do, Pixel phones, Gemini AI, all the
- 5:06moonshots, you name it. OK, so Buterin wants
- 5:08something similar for Ethereum, a steady, dependable
- 5:11engine. But what exactly is low -risk DeFi in
- 5:15his view? Good question. He defines it pretty
- 5:17simply. Things with clear utility. We're talking
- 5:19payments, savings tools, synthetic assets, and
- 5:23crucially, fully collateralized lending. So loans
- 5:26where there's enough locked up value backing
- 5:27them. Boring stuff, almost. Boring but dependable.
- 5:31And he's setting this against the stuff that
- 5:33made headlines before? Exactly. He contrasted
- 5:36with the speculative stuff, crazy yield farming,
- 5:39those NFT booms and busts, and he even called
- 5:41mean coins embarrassing, frankly. They generate
- 5:44fees, sure, but they're volatile, risky, not
- 5:47a foundation you can build on reliably. So it's
- 5:50about finding a revenue stream that's both profitable
- 5:53and aligns with the sort of Positive potential
- 5:57of the network. It's his argument He talks about
- 5:59this tension between things that just make money
- 6:01versus things that align with the network's values
- 6:04doing well versus being good as he put it Lowers
- 6:07defy he argues does both it provides real utility
- 6:11and the utility is pretty concrete right like
- 6:13those stable coin interest rates. Absolutely.
- 6:16You can get deposit rates around 5 % on stable
- 6:18coins like USDT or USDC through some of these
- 6:21protocols. For people in many parts of the world,
- 6:23that's huge. It's permissionless access to savings,
- 6:26potentially more stable than their local options,
- 6:29global reach. And that stability, that boring
- 6:31revenue. Yeah. Then let's Ethereum fund the next
- 6:33wave of innovation. That's the idea. Once you
- 6:36have that solid base, you can start exploring
- 6:38the really cutting edge stuff. reputation -based
- 6:41lending where you don't need massive collateral
- 6:43or New kinds of stable coins like flat coins
- 6:46or currencies pegged to a basket of goods instead
- 6:48of just the dollar exactly things indexed to
- 6:51inflation Maybe real financial engineering, but
- 6:54it needs that stable foundation first It's a
- 6:57shift from crypto as just speculation to crypto
- 6:59as a potential global financial utility Fascinating
- 7:03strategic move. Okay, so from stable finance
- 7:06to a major legal fight over how the current internet
- 7:09gets funded. Let's talk Google's ad -deck trial.
- 7:12Right. This is a huge one. Judge Leoni Brinkema
- 7:15already ruled that Google illegally monopolized
- 7:18the online ad market, specifically how they tied
- 7:20their publisher ad server, DFP, to their ad exchange,
- 7:24ADX. Okay, so the ruling happened. Now it's about
- 7:26the fix, the remedies phase, they call it. Precisely.
- 7:29And the Department of Justice is asking for the
- 7:31biggest possible fix, a structural remedy. Which
- 7:34means? Breakup. They want Google forced to sell
- 7:37off AdEx. It's AdExchange. They see AdEx as the
- 7:40core of Google's monopoly power. And they want
- 7:43Google banned from even operating in AdExchange
- 7:46for 10 years. Wow. Yeah, it's the antitrust nuclear
- 7:48option. They also want the ad auction logic open
- 7:51source. Wow. OK. And Google's response. I assume
- 7:54they're not thrilled. Not thrilled is putting
- 7:56it mildly. They're calling divestiture excessive.
- 8:00They argue it would hurt publishers, especially
- 8:02small ones, mess up the whole ecosystem. Instead,
- 8:06they're pushing for behavioral remedy. Behavioral.
- 8:08So like rules they have to follow. Basically,
- 8:10yes. Mandated changes to how they operate. Things
- 8:13like making their system work better with rival
- 8:16ad tech, getting rid of certain pricing rules
- 8:18that might give them an unfair advantage, stopping
- 8:20practices like first look or last look that privilege
- 8:23their own exchange. So it's interoperability
- 8:25and rule changes versus a full separation. That's
- 8:28the core conflict. And the stakes are incredibly
- 8:30high for, well, for how you get your news, how
- 8:33websites make money. This judge has to decide
- 8:35how a vast swath of the open internet will be
- 8:39funded in the coming years. And didn't Google
- 8:41just go through another big antitrust case, the
- 8:44search one? They did, yeah, just earlier this
- 8:46month. And in that case, they managed to avoid
- 8:48a structural remedy. They didn't have to spin
- 8:50off Chrome or Android. They got behavioral remedies
- 8:53instead. So that precedent, it probably gives
- 8:58Google some hope here, right? But the judge in
- 9:00this case could still decide differently. Absolutely.
- 9:03Judge Brinkham has to decide. Can Google be trusted
- 9:06to follow the rules, or is the only way to ensure
- 9:09fair competition to actually break up the integrated
- 9:11system? It's a fundamental question about market
- 9:13power and regulation. Huge decision looming.
- 9:16Yeah, wow, lots to think about there. Definitely.
- 9:19Before we recap, one more quick thank you to
- 9:20our other sponsor for today, Sconee. That's Sconee,
- 9:23S -K -O -N -I, pronounced Skonee. They make premium

- 9:43.com. S -K -O -N -I dot night dot com. Great
- 9:48stuff. Okay, so let's quickly tie things together
- 9:50from today. We started with TikTok. The big names
- 9:54getting involved like Dell and potentially Fox
- 9:56Corp and that crucial fight over controlling
- 9:59the board and more importantly the algorithm.
- 10:02It's politics, tech and influence all rolled
- 10:04into one. Then we shifted to Ethereum with Vitalik
- 10:07Buterin arguing for boring low -risk DeFi as
- 10:12the stable engine like Google search needed to
- 10:14fund future truly innovative financial tools
- 10:17and gain broader trust moving from hype to utility.
- 10:21And finally, the Google ad tech trial. The DOJ
- 10:24demanding a full breakup of their ad exchange.
- 10:28Google pushing for just rule changes. A decision
- 10:30that will fundamentally shape how much of the
- 10:32internet gets paid for. Structural versus behavioral
- 10:35remedies, that's the key battleground. Three
- 10:37very different arenas. Social media, crypto,
- 10:40online ads, but all facing these huge questions
- 10:42about control, stability, and who gets to set
- 10:45the rules for the digital future. It really highlights
- 10:47how important it is to connect these dots, doesn't
- 10:49it? Understanding the forces shaping the tech
