- 0:00John Chapter 11. Now a certain man was sick,
- 0:04Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary, and her sister Martha.
- 0:07It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his
- 0:10feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
- 0:13So the sister sent word to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom
- 0:17you love is sick. Now when Jesus heard this, he
- 0:19said, this sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory
- 0:23of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
- 0:27Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
- 0:30So when he heard that he was sick, he then stayed two days
- 0:32longer in the place where he was.
- 0:35Then after this he said to the disciples, let us go to Judea
- 0:38again. The disciples said to him,
- 0:40Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you and are you
- 0:43going there again? Jesus answered, are there not 12
- 0:47hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he
- 0:50does not stumble because he sees the light of this world, but if
- 0:53anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is
- 0:56not in him. This he said.
- 0:58And after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen
- 1:01asleep, but I go so that I may awaken him out of sleep.
- 1:05The disciples then said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep,
- 1:07he'll recover. Now Jesus had spoken of his
- 1:10death, but they thought that he was Speaking of literal sleep.
- 1:14So Jesus then said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead, and I
- 1:18am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may
- 1:20believe, but let us go to him. Therefore Thomas, who is called
- 1:25Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, so
- 1:28that we may die with him. So when Jesus came, he found
- 1:31that he had already been in the tomb four days.
- 1:34Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of
- 1:37the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning
- 1:40their brother. Martha, therefore, when she
- 1:42heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him, but Mary
- 1:45stayed at the house. Martha then said to Jesus, Lord,
- 1:48if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 1:51Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give
- 1:53you. Jesus said to her, Your brother
- 1:55will rise again. Martha said to him, I know that
- 1:59he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.
- 2:02Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection in the life.
- 2:05He who believes in me will live even if he dies, and everyone
- 2:09who lives and believes in me will never die.
- 2:12Do you believe this? She said to him, Yes, Lord, I've
- 2:15believed that you're the Christ, the Son of God, even he who
- 2:18comes into the world. When she had said this, she went
- 2:21away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, The teacher is
- 2:24here and is calling for you. And when she heard it, she got
- 2:27up quickly and was coming to him.
- 2:29Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in
- 2:32the place where Martha met Him. Then the Jews who were with her
- 2:35in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up
- 2:38quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she
- 2:40was going to the tomb to weep there.
- 2:43Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him and fell
- 2:45at his feet, saying to Him, Lord, if you had been here, my
- 2:48brother would not have died. When Jesus therefore saw her
- 2:51weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was
- 2:55deeply moved in spirit and was troubled and said, Where have
- 2:59you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and
- 3:02see. Jesus wept.
- 3:04So the Jews were saying, See how he loved him.
- 3:07But some of them said, could not this man who opened the eyes of
- 3:10the blind man have kept this man also from dying?
- 3:14So Jesus again, being deeply moved within, came to the tomb.
- 3:17Now it was a cave, and the stone was lying against it.
- 3:20Jesus said, Remove the stone. Martha, the sister of the
- 3:23deceased, said to him, Lord, by this time there will be a
- 3:26stench, for he has been dead 4 days.
- 3:28Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you believe, you
- 3:31will see the glory of God? So they removed the stone.
- 3:35Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that
- 3:38you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me,
- 3:41but because of the people standing around, I said it so
- 3:44that they may believe that you sent me.
- 3:46When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice.
- 3:48Lazarus, come forth. The man who had died came forth
- 3:51bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was
- 3:54wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him
- 3:57and let him go. Therefore many of the Jews who
- 4:00came to Mary and saw what he had done believed in him.
- 4:03But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the
- 4:05things which Jesus had done. Therefore the chief priests and
- 4:08the Pharisees convened a council and were saying, What are we
- 4:11doing? For this man is performing many
- 4:14signs. If we let him go on like this,
- 4:16all men will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take
- 4:19away both our place and our nation.
- 4:21But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said
- 4:23to them, You know nothing at all.
- 4:26Nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you
- 4:28that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not
- 4:31perish. Now he did not say this on his
- 4:34own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied
- 4:37that Jesus was going to die for the nation and not for the
- 4:40nation only, but in order that he might also gather together
- 4:43into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
- 4:46So from that day on they planned together to kill him.
- 4:49Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among
- 4:52the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the
- 4:54wilderness into a city called Ephraim, and there he stayed
- 4:58with his disciples. Now the Passover, the Jews, was
- 5:01near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country
- 5:04before the Passover to purify themselves.
- 5:06So they were seeking for Jesus and were saying to one another
- 5:09as they stood in the temple, What do you think?
- 5:12That he will not come to the feast at all?
- 5:14Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that
- 5:17if anyone knew where he was, He was to report it so that they
- 5:20might seize him.
