- 0:00John chapter 18 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went
- 0:03forth with his disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where
- 0:06there was a garden in which he entered with his disciples.
- 0:10Now Judas also, who was betraying him, knew the place,
- 0:13for Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
- 0:15Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from
- 0:18the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with
- 0:21lanterns and torches and weapons.
- 0:23So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went
- 0:26forth and said to him, Whom do you seek?
- 0:29They answered him, Jesus the Nazarene.
- 0:32He said to them, I am He. And Judas also, who was
- 0:35betraying him, was standing with him.
- 0:37So when he said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to
- 0:40the ground. Therefore he again asked them,
- 0:43Whom do you seek? And they said, Jesus the
- 0:45Nazarene. Jesus answered, I told you that
- 0:48I am He. So if you seek me, let these go
- 0:50their way to fulfil the word which He spoke Of those whom you
- 0:54have given me. I lost not one.
- 0:56Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the
- 0:59high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear.
- 1:01And the slave's name was Malchus.
- 1:04So Jesus said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath, the cup
- 1:07which the Father has given me. Shall I not drink it?
- 1:11So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of
- 1:13the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him and led him to Anice
- 1:16first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest
- 1:20that year. Now Caiaphas was the one who had
- 1:22advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on
- 1:25behalf of the people. Simon Peter was following Jesus,
- 1:28and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to
- 1:32the high priest and entered with Jesus into the court of the high
- 1:34priest. But Peter was standing at the
- 1:37door outside. So the other disciple who was
- 1:39known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper
- 1:42and brought Peter in. Then the slave girl who kept the
- 1:45door said to Peter, You are not also one of this man's
- 1:48disciples, are you? He said, I am not.
- 1:51Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made
- 1:53a charcoal fire, for it was cold, and they were warming
- 1:56themselves. And Peter was also with them,
- 1:58standing and warming himself. The high priest then questioned
- 2:02Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
- 2:05Jesus answered him. I have spoken openly to the
- 2:07world. I always taught in synagogues
- 2:09and in the temple where all the Jews come together, and I spoke
- 2:13nothing in secret. Why do you question me?
- 2:16Question those who have heard what I spoke to them.
- 2:18They know what I said. When he had said this, one of
- 2:21the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, Is that
- 2:24the way you answer the high priest?
- 2:27Jesus answered him, if I have spoken wrongly, testify of the
- 2:30wrong, but if rightly, why do you strike me so Anna sent him
- 2:34bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
- 2:37Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself.
- 2:39So they said to him, You are not also one of his disciples, are
- 2:42you? He denied it and said, I am not
- 2:46one of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the
- 2:48one whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the
- 2:51garden with him? Peter then denied it again, and
- 2:54immediately a rooster crowed. Then they led Jesus from
- 2:57Caiaphas into the praetorium, and it was early.
- 3:00They themselves did not enter the praetorium, so that they
- 3:03would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
- 3:06Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, What accusation
- 3:09do you bring against this man? They answered and said to him,
- 3:12If this man were not an evil doer, we would not have
- 3:14delivered him to you. So Pilate said to them, Take him
- 3:18yourselves and judge him according to your law.
- 3:21The Jews said to him, We are not permitted to put anyone to death
- 3:24to fulfill the word of Jesus, which he spoke, signifying by
- 3:27what kind of death he was about to die.
- 3:30Therefore Pilate entered again into the praetorium and summoned
- 3:33Jesus and said to him, Are you the king of the Jews?
- 3:36Jesus answered, Are you saying this on your own initiative, or
- 3:39did others tell you about me? Pilate answered, I'm not a Jew.
- 3:43Am I your own nation? And the chief priest delivered
- 3:45you to me. What have you done?
- 3:48Jesus answered, My Kingdom is not of this world.
- 3:51If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be
- 3:53fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews.
- 3:56But as it is, my Kingdom is not of this realm.
- 3:59Therefore, Pilate said to him, So you are a king.
- 4:02Jesus answered, You say correctly that I am a king.
- 4:05For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the
- 4:08world to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth
- 4:12hears my voice. Pilate said to him, What is
- 4:15truth? And when he had said this, he
- 4:17went out again to the Jews and said to them, I find no guilt in
- 4:20him. But you have accustomed that I
- 4:22release someone for you at the Passover.
- 4:24Do you wish that I release for you the king of the Jews?
- 4:27So they cried out again, saying, not this man, but Barabbas.
- 4:31Now Barabbas was a robber.
