Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / Winter Trail Running Gear Kit for Cold Temps
Transcript
- 0:00OK, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain Peaks.
- 0:03Today I am going to be going through my full winter trail
- 0:10running, mountain running hiking gear kit.
- 0:15It's been super cold like every week in the last month in New
- 0:18England. And yeah, I'm going to talk
- 0:22about everything that I use to stay warm, how to keep my hands
- 0:24warm, feet warm, face warm. Talk about my pack, talk about
- 0:30all the gear that I use and I don't just want to do here's
- 0:34what I use. I want to kind of talk about in
- 0:36detail each item, how I use about it, tips and tricks, all
- 0:41that kind of stuff. So this is going to be a full
- 0:43deep dive kind of gear talk. And I, I have like most of the
- 0:49gear that I, I pretty much just went and grabbed everything, all
- 0:53of my running gear. So I have most of the stuff.
- 0:57So we'll go through it. I don't know, I don't think this
- 0:59will take super long, but we'll go through each thing.
- 1:01I think it'll be good to talk about, especially now it's just
- 1:03been so cold. So we'll do that.
- 1:06And just a, a disclaimer, this is not a winter safety hiking
- 1:14gear list. I'm going to link New
- 1:18Hampshire's hike safe information, the 10 essentials,
- 1:22winter gear, all that stuff, just so everyone has it and is
- 1:26aware. Get your hike safeguard, all
- 1:28that jazz. But this is less of a safety
- 1:31talk and more of the stuff that I that I take with me.
- 1:34Had to throw that out there. Nobody follow what I do and then
- 1:37get get stranded out there or something because the winter and
- 1:41the whites, any, any of these northeast high peaks, it is it,
- 1:47it gets cold and it's, it's legit.
- 1:48So you got to be prepared. So that's what we're going to do
- 1:52today. A couple other things.
- 1:54There is a new mount Monadnock winter race coming up next
- 1:59weekend, the Heartbreaker mountain race.
- 2:03It is going to be February 14th, 2026 and it's up down on the
- 2:08white dot, which is I think it's awesome.
- 2:10I mean, the Monadnock white dot is notorious.
- 2:14It's iconic. Everyone knows there's a bunch
- 2:17of Monadnock crushers that always send that up and down.
- 2:22And I didn't look at it to see if there's an entrance list.
- 2:25I don't know who's going to be in it, but that's going to be a
- 2:27fun race to follow. And I'm sure there will be some
- 2:31of the Monadnock boys going down there, so it'll be fun to
- 2:35follow. And then this weekend it already
- 2:39happened, so we're at the end of it.
- 2:41My prediction will last. Skier standing still be going
- 2:44Sunday morning at 6:00. Yes, I think it is going to be
- 2:50gone 'cause there's some sluggers in that race, but holy
- 2:52smokes, it's going to be freezing.
- 2:55And it's going to be the second night.
- 2:56So it's starting on the Friday. Friday night it's going to be
- 2:59snowy, but not that bad. And then Saturday night into
- 3:02Sunday morning is going to be -10 like a real feel.
- 3:05It's going to be freezing. So people are going to be 48
- 3:09hours in and getting hit with that cold.
- 3:11So we'll see. We'll see how it goes.
- 3:14I think with the cold that I do, it's hard to envision the course
- 3:18record going down, but we'll see.
- 3:20I'm going to predict, yes, 6:00 AM.
- 3:22They're going to still be going. OK, so that's this weekend.
- 3:27And then, oh, at the end, I'm going to do some tongue
- 3:29twisters. They're just a couple tongue
- 3:31twisters that a couple of us were laughing about.
- 3:34So we'll do those at the end and that's what we got today.
- 3:38OK, before we get into the gear talk today, I want to do a 62nd
- 3:42training tip for you. And the tip for this week is
- 3:45going to be around deload weeks or down weeks.
- 3:49I think every three to four, maybe 5 weeks of training, you
- 3:53should be taking a deload week. A deload week is basically a
- 3:58week where you just train a lot less than you have been
- 4:01training. So I usually reduce volume like
- 4:0330 to 50%. So basically cut most of your
- 4:06runs like 2/3 of what you usually do.
- 4:10And then don't go out for any super long runs and don't do any
- 4:12hard workouts. And what this does this week,
- 4:16this recovery period, like rest week, it just allows your body
- 4:20to adapt to a new training load you've been doing.
- 4:23So usually when I do a training block, I will increase my volume
- 4:27like on a three or four week cycle.
- 4:30So for three to four straight weeks, I'm kind of building,
- 4:32building, building, building. And I'm and then that last week
- 4:36I'm really pushing myself and I basically push myself and then
- 4:39take AD load week to allow your body to adapt to the training.
- 4:43And then the next week you come back fresher and you don't
- 4:46really lose that much fitness because you're still training
- 4:49and then you kind of build from there.
- 4:51And I think a lot of people don't do this.
- 4:54I think the Strava charts can kind of take hold.
- 4:59And no, I don't want to have a super down week, but I think
- 5:01they're really important. They're good for recovery,
- 5:03they're going to help you adapt, and it's just a good cushion to
- 5:07make sure you're not overtraining and kind of
- 5:10spiraling into something where you have to take longer than a
- 5:13week off from training. So if you haven't been doing DLO
- 5:16weeks, try them out. And if you have any questions,
- 5:18send me an e-mail, andrew@runmountainpeaks.com.
- 5:22And I just put out a free endurance training guide on my
- 5:27website. You can go in there, download it
- 5:29for free, and it basically walks through all the top things that
- 5:32I think about in my training to basically just get faster and
- 5:36make sure you're staying healthy.
- 5:37So if you're interested in that, go check it out.
- 5:40It's out of run mountainpeaks.com.
- 5:42It'll be in the description. OK, today we're going to get
- 5:47into the gear. So I think right now, do I need
- 5:51this? I may, I may even need this.
- 5:54No, I don't need it. I can't forget to do the tongue
- 5:56twisters though. All right, so I'm going to show
- 5:58you what I have going on right now.
- 6:00So this is going to be a quick mobile podcast.
- 6:05Hey, here we go. OK, so I basically separated my
- 6:09gear. Well, the mic got really, really
- 6:12close there. So I basically separated my
- 6:14gear. This cooler has basically
- 6:16everything that I keep on my drying rack.
- 6:20If you are a runner, you probably have a drying rack,
- 6:23especially in the winter for all of your stuff.
- 6:25So this is like all the things that I keep out in my drying
- 6:28rack that I will take on most of my runs.
- 6:31So we'll start with that stuff and then I have some pack stuff
- 6:35and clothing in the big bin, which we'll go through.
- 6:38I think that's very important layering in the packs.
- 6:40And then this last little bit over here is pretty much just
- 6:45all of my extra stuff, like some safety, some stuff.
- 6:49And, and so we'll go through what I have in there.
- 6:51It's stuff that I don't use too, too much, but I do have and I
- 6:53keep, and then I have my my running my footwear.
- 7:00So we'll do that. And I've kind of talked about
- 7:02the footwear before, but I haven't, I haven't done a
- 7:07visual. So if you're watching this,
- 7:09yeah, hopefully, I mean, the last minute, if you've been
- 7:13watching this, you're probably like, all right, this makes
- 7:16sense. But if you're listening, you're
- 7:17like, all right, this guy's kind of just so hold on.
- 7:20I'm resetting everything up here, people.
- 7:22Do I have to cut this? Nah.
- 7:23Keep it in. Keep it in.
- 7:25Appreciate you guys. Stick it with me.
- 7:26OK. OK, Oh man, my hands are going
- 7:30to get cold today too, so we're going to all right.
- 7:33So we're going to start out with what I use every day, like take
- 7:38on all of my runs. And I'm actually wearing a maybe
- 7:42a couple of the things, but I think I think we should be good
- 7:44here. So I'm just going to start
- 7:45flying through this stuff. A ball cap.
- 7:49I pretty much always wear a ball cap running.
- 7:54I think a lot of the times if it's not super cold, the kind of
- 7:59winter hat is too much for me so I'll just use a ball cap and
- 8:03then I use it with a Gator. I think the ball cap Gator combo
- 8:07is perfect. The Gator, I keep it around my
- 8:10neck and then you can basically bump it up around your face,
- 8:15around your nose if it's really, really cold and you can put it
- 8:18up over your ears. You can put it over your ears,
- 8:20over your hat, but not around your face.
- 8:23It's super versatile. It's super light and it just
- 8:26gives you like enough basically, I don't know, like covering your
- 8:31face and your neck area from the cold.
- 8:34And I find with the cap, it is super effective.
- 8:39If I don't have the cap, I feel like my head gets a little bit
- 8:42too cold sometimes. So it's like a little it's, you
- 8:45know, it doesn't do too, too much for insulating, but it does
- 8:47just enough. So that's like I basically run
- 8:51with that every day. So that's why he's there.
- 8:54And then, yeah, if it is really cold, I will wear a winter hat.
- 8:57But I will say like temperatures when I have to wear a winter
- 9:01hat, it's got to be single digits or colder.
- 9:05And a lot of the time, like, I don't know, unless it's like -10
- 9:09plus in the windshield, I don't even wear a winter hat.
- 9:13It's just not my not my style. My head gets maybe too hot and
- 9:16it's just something, it's kind of like bulkier.
- 9:18I don't know. So yeah, that is pretty much,
- 9:23that's pretty much what I use for the head, neck, another cap,
- 9:26well worn. I always get comments about
- 9:28this. Oh, shout out John and Amy.
- 9:31They got me this new hat because John John is always saying like,
- 9:35oh dude, you got to get a new hat.
- 9:37But I like that hat. So that's what I have going
- 9:40around for the head and neck. This is another Gator for the
- 9:44neck. I will say I'm trying to think I
- 9:47probably will use the winter hat before I use this, but once I
- 9:53grab the winter hat, I'm definitely having this in my
- 9:55truck when I go to a a trailhead.
- 9:58It's just more of an insulated neck gaiter on those really cold
- 10:03days. But if it's not super, super
- 10:05cold, it's too much for me. And I think that that single
- 10:08like this, this, this neck Gator is like it's just like a thin
- 10:13fabric and that's just enough for me.
- 10:16So that's what I'll rare around the neck and head.
- 10:18And then how to keep my hands warm.
- 10:21I think a lot of people, how should I say this?
- 10:26I think keeping your hands warm is probably the number one thing
- 10:32that gets cold first. It's like the first thing that's
- 10:35going to get really cold. And so I have kind of like a
- 10:38layering system that I use for my hands.
- 10:41And so yeah, how do I, how do I go through the hand, the hand
- 10:45layering system, because everyone talks about you got to
- 10:47wear layers in the winter. You got to do it right.
- 10:50But I, I don't think a lot of people think about layering your
- 10:53glove options because a lot of times you have too warm of a
- 10:57glove. It's like you wear it, but then
- 10:59it gets too hot too quick. You got to take it off and then
- 11:02to cool down and then your hands are kind of exposed to the air,
- 11:04all that stuff. So what I do is, again, this is
- 11:08unless it's single digits, real, real temperature, I wear just a
- 11:13super thin pair of running gloves.
- 11:16These are mismatched. I think I lost a right and a
- 11:19left to each of them, which is awesome.
- 11:21It's better than having two rights.
- 11:22So I match them up. But it's a super thin glove pair
- 11:25and they're not very, very warm. But when I think about hand
- 11:30stuff on the way up a mountain, you're going to be working
- 11:33harder a lot, you know, a lot, a good amount harder than going
- 11:36down. So your body is just going to be
- 11:38warmer going up and then you got to kind of go down.
- 11:41So a lot of times you sweat. And so with the little gloves,
- 11:44when I'm going up, I'm usually warm enough to keep my hands
- 11:48warm with this, with a thin pair of gloves and you're working
- 11:50hard enough that they don't get super cold.
- 11:52And then once I get to the top, I take those off because they're
- 11:56at lab that point sweaty, kind of wet and I put on a thicker
- 11:59pair of gloves. These aren't mittens.
- 12:02They still have the the fingers on them, but they're very
- 12:06insulated. And so like right before I get
- 12:08to the summit, I'll take the the small gloves off and I'll put
- 12:11these ones on. And these thin gloves even have
- 12:14a layering system. So like level 1 is just wearing
- 12:17them regular if it's a little bit too cold, but I don't want
- 12:21to put the bigger gloves on. Level 2 is like I take the
- 12:24fingers outgoing up and I put it my hand in a fist and not like
- 12:28usually keeps them warm enough. And then I guess Level 3 is
- 12:33like, you could always put a hand warmer in for, for any of
- 12:35this stuff, But that's how we use those.
- 12:38And another trick to keep your hands warm in the winter is any
- 12:42time like when you're sweating, you're going to get wet.
- 12:45You want to avoid getting wet as much as you can.
- 12:48Like that's like the whole thing with winter.
- 12:49You want to try to stay dry because that's going to keep you
- 12:51a lot warmer with your hands. One thing that I think really
- 12:54helps keep, keep them dry is if you're grabbing trees or falling
- 12:59or slipping or whatever, and your hands get snow on them.
- 13:03As soon as you get snow on your gloves, brush them off.
- 13:07Like hit them pretty hard against your legs.
- 13:09I always do that both hands. If they get snow on them, I, I
- 13:12brush them off because you want to brush off the snow before the
- 13:16heat of your hands melts it and, and get your gloves wet.
- 13:20So that's one tip. Start with light gloves and then
- 13:24wipe off the snow as soon as you can and at the top put on a pair
- 13:27of warmer gloves. Another tip, obviously you know
- 13:312026 will use modern technology hand warmers.
- 13:35Hand warmers work great. I got some right here.
- 13:38Bring them with me all the time in the winter.
- 13:40I'll always have an extra pair in my pack when I go with me.
- 13:43And one other thing about the hand warmers, if it's a cold
- 13:47day, I always start them at the beginning of the run, put one in
- 13:52each pocket. And because if your hands get
- 13:55really, really cold, you don't want to have to go through
- 13:57opening the pack, shaking them up, getting them warm.
- 13:59You just want them already warm. And when you have them in your
- 14:02pockets next to your legs, they're going to stay a lot
- 14:04warmer and like, ready if you need them.
- 14:07Because yeah, if you get to a point where you meet your hands
- 14:09are freezing, your glove fell off or whatever, something
- 14:11happened, you don't want to have to wait for them to warm up.
- 14:14Like, you know, minutes are crucial.
- 14:16And then the So that's another tip.
- 14:19And then lastly, if it's really, really cold and I went through
- 14:21two pairs of gloves, like if they both got soaked, I have
- 14:24mittens that I'll bring too. I don't bring these on a lot of
- 14:27runs, but I do bring them on some of the runs just like a
- 14:31good pair of like insulated warm mittens.
- 14:34A lot of the times if I roam with these, it's just it's just
- 14:37too they're too warm. But these are like the last
- 14:39layer. So if you, if you hit it right,
- 14:43I, I mean most of the runs like it depends on the length and the
- 14:47cold, the temperatures and stuff.
- 14:48But if you kind of hit your hand, keeping your hands warm in
- 14:52the correct way, you use the leg gloves and they're starting to
- 14:54maybe get a tiny bit cold. You get to the top, you switch
- 14:57to a new pair and then weigh down, you switch your last pair
- 15:00of your long day or whatever and your hands are just warm the
- 15:02whole day. It makes it so much better.
- 15:05So that's the hand stuff. What else do we got in here for?
- 15:09So talking about hand warmers, I have toe warmers actually just
- 15:13put out a a YouTube video. Just quickly. 1 tip I use with
- 15:17the toe warmers is to keep your phone charged longer.
- 15:21Just take one of the toe warmers off if you have a phone case and
- 15:24stick it like a sticky toe warmer and stick it on the back
- 15:27of your phone and it just keeps your battery heated up and it
- 15:31and it lasts way longer. Like if I stick one of those to
- 15:34my phone, I've never had problems with my phone dying.
- 15:37I don't really rely on my phone for like navigation or texting,
- 15:40you know, or I don't plan to. So it's never like, you know,
- 15:45I'm never looking at my phone much anyway, usually ever unless
- 15:48I'm trying to take a picture. But it's good to have in case
- 15:51you need to use your phone and you need to be charged.
- 15:54So that's why I have there. Yeah.
- 15:58Now the hand warmers or an extra pair of hand warmers there.
- 16:01All right, now we're going to get into some of the I guess we
- 16:04have one more extra light layer that I bring.
- 16:07So this is, I'm not going to open it up, but it's basically
- 16:10like a, it's like a Houdini. I shouldn't it's I think it's
- 16:13outdoor research maybe, but it's just a tiny lightweight water
- 16:18resistant. This is not a shell.
- 16:21This is not like an outer shell waterproof.
- 16:25It's water resistant and it's just a tiny light.
- 16:28Like this is 3 oz layer that I use on almost on every one of my
- 16:35winter runs. I think that is like the perfect
- 16:38layer to have in a, in an easy access pocket because like I
- 16:43said, if you're working up the mountain, I usually just start
- 16:45out and I have the layers here, but something light.
- 16:47And then once you get to the top, that one thin layer is
- 16:52usually all that I need for the rest of the day.
- 16:55I throw that on. A lot of the times I'll just
- 16:58throw it over my, my vest that I'm wearing.
- 17:01So I don't even have to take anything off.
- 17:03I always have it in a pocket I can access and I just throw it
- 17:06over. And you can actually see because
- 17:09when when your body's warm and it's cold outside and there's
- 17:12like a barrier, the moisture will accumulate.
- 17:15But it does such a good job of keeping the temperature, your
- 17:18body temperature from kind of like just going into wherever it
- 17:21goes. It just keeps you insulated and
- 17:24keeps you warm. And it's super lightweight and,
- 17:28and you would be surprised at how warm this thing keeps you.
- 17:31So when you usually like like the gloves as I'm going up, I,
- 17:35I'm super light. I just have maybe like a, like a
- 17:37long sleeve thing and then a T-shirt over it.
- 17:40And then like when I, right before I get to the top, I throw
- 17:42that thing on and I start going down or if I'm above tree line
- 17:45or whatever. And it does a great job.
- 17:49So I bring that with me like pretty much every run.
- 17:52And then I'll get into just a few of the safety things that I
- 17:55that I bring with me every run. This is stuff that I'll either
- 17:59put on my pack or like my running belt if I'm going or my
- 18:02shorts or wherever, depending on if I have a pack or not, or if
- 18:05I'm doing a local run. But I always keep an emergency
- 18:08blanket. I think this one is pretty
- 18:10self-explanatory. Most people have one super
- 18:13lightweight good to have in a pinch.
- 18:16And then this is one that I, I wouldn't bring on local runs,
- 18:19but pretty much every mountain winter run that I go on, I will
- 18:23bring a bivvy. This is like a, I don't know,
- 18:27it's kind of like a sleeping bag bivvy.
- 18:29It's basically just a buff, you know, a buffed up emergency
- 18:33thermal blanket. But it, it encapsulates your
- 18:35whole body. Like I think the blank is
- 18:37blanket is just the sheet, which is good.
- 18:41But sometimes, you know, if it's windy or whatever, it's
- 18:42flapping, that is like a this is like a, it's a bivvy.
- 18:47It's not like a bivvy that gets sleeping or anything, but it's
- 18:49just a thermal blanket Pivy that you can get your whole body in
- 18:52and zip it up very easily. So I always bring that with me.
- 18:56And then another thing I always bring with me, I usually don't
- 19:01and I actually don't. I mean, I do have one, but I
- 19:03don't usually bring an outer hard, hard shell.
- 19:08And this is where the this is not a safety talk, folks.
- 19:12This is just the talk. I feel like what is a shell?
- 19:17A shell is just like a impermeable barrier that, you
- 19:20know, keeps the wind out and keeps water out.
- 19:23And I think there's lots of super expensive shells on the
- 19:26market. There's lots of things you can
- 19:27get and I have one for, but I think a rain poncho does close
- 19:33to what some of those other things do.
- 19:37It's super lightweight and in a pinch, this thing will keep you
- 19:40warm. I mean, it's, it's just an
- 19:42impermeable layer that you can throw over yourself to.
- 19:45It's 100% waterproof. It just keeps the rain, keeps
- 19:48the window. And so I think it's a good layer
- 19:50that can keep you really, really warm.
- 19:53This is like, you know, it's the same sense as this, this
- 19:56lightweight throw over, except it is waterproof.
- 20:00So I bring that. I bring that most runs in the in
- 20:02the summer too, but definitely in the winter.
- 20:04And then I also have a lighter and like a little bit of like a
- 20:07fire starter just to have, it's good to have that stuff if you
- 20:13need it in a pinch. And then last day I ran every
- 20:16run a little thing of toilet paper.
- 20:19You know the you know the deal, OK.
- 20:23And then two other things that I have on my bring on every run
- 20:28list is just going to be water and food stuff.
- 20:33So I guess we'll do a quick food thing first.
- 20:36In the winter, I really love Maple syrup as fuel just because
- 20:40it it takes longer to freeze. Like a lot of snacks will freeze
- 20:43up pretty quick, but syrup stands the test of time a little
- 20:46bit better out there. And instead of buying like the
- 20:50untapped, which is very yummy, very good, but it's very
- 20:53expensive. If you can get just like a large
- 20:55like if you buy like a gallon of syrup or whatever, just buy a
- 20:58larger batch of just whatever syrup, local syrup.
- 21:01I put it in these little 2, I think they're 2 ounce Nalgene
- 21:06bottles. And this is just how I instead
- 21:09of, you know, having a bunch of those little untapped packets,
- 21:12you can just have like a little on the go thing.
- 21:14It fits good in one of your packs.
- 21:17Yeah. And I use these things for a
- 21:18few, few things actually for running like a lot of times I'll
- 21:21put it's actually almost the perfect size for like a serving
- 21:24of whatever liquid hydration you use.
- 21:27So I'll put it in that instead of dealing with like the
- 21:29individual packets. Yeah, I like those things.
- 21:32I have a bunch of them. And then mainly what I use for
- 21:36water in the winter is just regular soft flasks.
- 21:40So 500 milliliters, soft flasks. So this is another thing I want
- 21:44to talk about. How do I keep my water a liquid
- 21:48I think was my note. How do I keep my water liquid?
- 21:51Because obviously in in the winter just freezes up.
- 21:54And I will, I will kind of say that I on the longer days, like
- 21:58if I was going for 4567 hours, this would probably not work or
- 22:02I'd have to, I'd have to bring more reinforcements.
- 22:05But pretty much all my winter runs, I just bring those because
- 22:08I'm usually doing two or three hours maybe for Max.
- 22:13So how do I keep my water warm in those because they're not
- 22:15insulated or anything. I think the first step is in the
- 22:19morning or the night before, I will just fill them up with
- 22:22water. And if you, and if you have put
- 22:25something in there and have the water be room temperature or
- 22:29warmer, you can start with warm water from your faucet.
- 22:32I don't know, sometimes not that it tastes weird or whatever, but
- 22:35I don't know, I get weird about putting warm water in in things.
- 22:39Yeah, there's more I don't know, but but anyway, so I usually
- 22:42start with like room temperature water or warm water that
- 22:45basically just takes it longer for the outdoors to get it down
- 22:48to a freezing point, which kind of makes sense.
- 22:51So that's an easy, just put warm water in your in your bottles
- 22:54before you go. And then your last sip was
- 22:56usually like ice cold. That's how you know you did it
- 22:58right. So that's going to help it from
- 23:00freezing. The second tip is, and I'm a big
- 23:03advocate of liquid nutrition, like I just put in whatever
- 23:06sugar mix that you have. I think it's just an easy way to
- 23:10stay on top of your calories on longer days in the mountains.
- 23:13But when you have lots of sodium, it is going to lower the
- 23:17freezing point and it's just going to make it harder to
- 23:19freeze. So I, I will put 4 scoops, 4
- 23:24servings of liquid nutrition into a 500 milliliter bottle.
- 23:28Basically just get it super salty, super sweet.
- 23:31I know a lot of people don't like that, but I just, I, I
- 23:33don't mind it. And, and then the winter like I
- 23:37just have maybe like one thing of syrup and that's like all I
- 23:39need or maybe a couple other things.
- 23:41But it just makes it super simple because in the winter I
- 23:44want everything simple. I want the lowest amount of
- 23:46things to have to deal with and, and fuss with.
- 23:50And then yeah, the another thing with the, with the soft flash,
- 23:54just like if you had a bladder pack, you need to be sucking
- 23:58from what was it called the nipple every 5 minutes or so to
- 24:04keep it from freezing because that, that top, that like nipple
- 24:07top is going to freeze first. So you want to be, you want to
- 24:12be drinking from both all of your flax flasks every 5
- 24:18minutes. So like little sip here, little
- 24:20sip here, little sip here, little sip here.
- 24:21You don't want to just drink one and then drink the second one
- 24:24because the time you start the second one, that that nozzle
- 24:26will be frozen. And so yeah, if you're just
- 24:28constantly sipping it, that's going to keep it clear from
- 24:31freezing up. And then inevitably when you're
- 24:35out there long enough or it's cold enough, it is going to
- 24:37freeze up. Once it freezes up, you just
- 24:40have to stop and unscrew the cap and then drink through that
- 24:44circle and that will give you like another 30 minutes or an
- 24:48hour. And then after, by the time like
- 24:52that start getting hard, the whole thing just turns to slush.
- 24:55And hopefully by the time your drink turns to slush because it
- 24:58gets really unpleasant to drink at that point, you're maybe 3-4
- 25:03hours in and you're done. You're back at the car.
- 25:07So that's how we keep the liquid all warm.
- 25:11And that is basically the all the stuff that I bring on like
- 25:15every winter run, kind of the essentials, the essential kit
- 25:19that can go in a vest or go in a running belt or whatever you're
- 25:22going to take on your runs. And this isn't just for mountain
- 25:24stuff. That's for, you know, any, any
- 25:26local trails or whatever. Next we're going to get into the
- 25:30packs. So what packs do I use?
- 25:33So I mean, it depends again on temperature and stuff, how much
- 25:36stuff you're bringing. But I have two running vests, so
- 25:43one of them is a 5 liter running vest.
- 25:45I don't wear this much in the winter.
- 25:47It's a little bit more delicate and I feel like in the winter
- 25:49you kind of get snagged up on stuff more.
- 25:52But if I'm going super light I will just bring that.
- 25:55But usually in the winter I'm bringing my bigger Solomon
- 25:59vests. I think this is like a 16 or 18.
- 26:02No, it's not 18 liter. The 12 maybe this might be a 12
- 26:06liter, but it's a little bit bigger and it's super stretchy
- 26:10like you can fit so much stuff in these packs if you stretch it
- 26:13out. So it just has more space
- 26:16because in the winter you do you do have more things that you
- 26:18need. So I just bring this.
- 26:20It's an older one for me. It's a beater, but it still does
- 26:23the job and one thing I want to talk about on this vest is I
- 26:28have a little bit of a ADIY. So these are gear ties.
- 26:33You can buy gear ties at like any, you know, REI or whatever,
- 26:38but I think these are actually like Amazon garden ties and I
- 26:42actually had to double them up to make them a little bit
- 26:43stronger. But what I use the gear ties for
- 26:47a lot of people don't have a good way to strap snowshoes to a
- 26:50running vest. And if you have like the light
- 26:53Dion snowshoes or some sort of light running snowshoe, you
- 26:57know, you, you don't want to have to like bring a big pack
- 26:59just to strap on your snowshoes. A lot of the times you, if you
- 27:02know, you can just put on your snow shoes from the start, that
- 27:05just works. You don't have to put them on
- 27:06your pack, but sometimes you do need to kind of put them on your
- 27:09pack for a little bit or it's more comfortable.
- 27:11And So what I did on these Solomon packs, if you can see
- 27:16this, you know, like hopefully, hopefully all this stuff has
- 27:19been in the picture, but I just like cut a little hole in one of
- 27:25them. I don't know if that's going to
- 27:27come up good, but in one of the arm or the shoulder, not
- 27:30armpits, but like shoulder straps, I cut a little hole in
- 27:33one of the fabric. There's a bunch of fabrics in
- 27:35there. And then I feed the gear tie
- 27:38through the whole thing. And I do that on both sides.
- 27:42And then basically all you have to do is you put your stuff in
- 27:45your pack and then you lay your snowshoes over your pack and the
- 27:49gear ties, strap them around a good sturdy thing in your
- 27:52snowshoes and just tie them tight.
- 27:54And the gear ties don't come undone.
- 27:56They're super strong and it's just an easy way to carry
- 28:00snowshoes on the back of your pack.
- 28:02I'm sure probably some of the newer packs are getting better
- 28:05at having some sort of attachment that you could use,
- 28:08but this is what I use. I mean, it's a Peter pack
- 28:11anyway. I have lots of holes in it, so
- 28:12you just cut like a little hole and then it works really good.
- 28:16And with those, if you have a super light pair of snowshoes,
- 28:20then then it's like it's like no problem.
- 28:22And it's super light in your back and you can just roam the
- 28:26vest and boom, there you go. The last pack that I have is
- 28:31this is an ultimate direction fast pack.
- 28:34It is a 20 liter. And this one is just a, it's not
- 28:37a vest. It's more of a pack.
- 28:38So it has kind of like a sturdy background.
- 28:41If I'm doing like a six hour day in the winter, I'll bring that.
- 28:45It's just more food. It's kind of sturdier.
- 28:47The snowshoes do have attachments on it.
- 28:50Just a bigger pack, a different option, But I, I, I don't use
- 28:54that one too, too much. I'm usually always wearing a
- 28:55running vest, so that's what I that's what I have there.
- 29:00I guess we'll go through some of we just thought we were talking
- 29:03about the snowshoes, so we'll go through the footwear stuff that
- 29:05I use snowshoes. These are Deion's super light.
- 29:10You can run in those. It's actually really fun to run
- 29:13downhill in those. This is like the closest I'll
- 29:15get the skiing on a on a given year.
- 29:19They they are that when you get a super lightweight snowshoe and
- 29:23you put miles on them, they're just going to fall apart, You
- 29:26know, faster than like an MSR snowshoe or something like
- 29:29bigger, sturdier, but they're awesome.
- 29:31This is like the only ones that I like to use unless you're
- 29:34trail breaking like 18 inches of snow or two feet of snow.
- 29:38Those are really good. They're not super heavy.
- 29:40They don't have the the weight to them if you have a ton of so
- 29:45it's not good for like, yeah, super trail breaking missions.
- 29:48But for most, for most stuff in the whites, like if you're on a
- 29:53used trail, they're like they're they're really good.
- 29:56I love those snowshoes. Yeah, I guess as far as traction
- 30:01micro spikes, I use micro spikes a fair amount.
- 30:04And then I have these black diamond teeny teeny tiny micro
- 30:12spikes, teeny verse. Micro verse.
- 30:15That's a Rick Morty. Yeah.
- 30:17So I don't know what you want to call this, but these are like
- 30:19the teeny the teeny, teeny spikes.
- 30:23And I mean, this is just much more lightweight than than the
- 30:27these are like Catullus the first the micro spikes.
- 30:30But both of them do the trick if you so like when do I use each
- 30:35of them? Because I, I think I've talked
- 30:38about the spice before. I like always going lighter.
- 30:41I think more minimal is, is the way I go if I can get away with
- 30:44it. And so unless the trail is
- 30:47super, super steep or unless it has like A2 plus inches of loose
- 30:54kind of beach sandy snow, I think these black diamonds, tiny
- 30:58spikes are perfectly will give you just as much grip.
- 31:01And I think they're they're good to go.
- 31:03So like, I don't know if you can see it, but they are they are so
- 31:06small. But if you really, really need
- 31:11good grip and you're going up something steep or there's more
- 31:14snow, I find that you just the micro spikes are better.
- 31:17So I wear I will wear those and they're not super heavy.
- 31:20It's just like a little a little weight thing that I like to
- 31:22think about. And then if the trails are
- 31:28packed very good and it's not super, super steep, a lot of the
- 31:31times I just wear studded trail runner shoes.
- 31:34These are the the Gore Tex, La Sportiva Blizzards.
- 31:39These have been great for me. I've had them for a couple years
- 31:41now, two or three years. They have like 88 little metal
- 31:44studs in them that give you some traction in there.
- 31:47They have a built in Gator which is great and they're Gore Tex
- 31:50which will keep your feet a little bit a little bit warm on
- 31:52the Super cold days. One note about these shoes when
- 31:56I first got them, I think it was this one when I first got them
- 32:01right here started to break away.
- 32:03The fabric started to break away from whatever this plastic is.
- 32:07And I was kind of like upset because you know, these are
- 32:09pretty expensive or were pretty expensive or whatever.
- 32:11But I just use shoe glue like regular shoe glue to fix that
- 32:15and they have not come apart since.
- 32:19So that was one thing like shoe glue actually really works for
- 32:22for some some shoes if you have something falling apart.
- 32:25But I really love these shoes and the built in Gators.
- 32:28This is something guys well, I'll talk about in two seconds,
- 32:31but I actually don't own a pair of Gators right now, just these
- 32:34built in Gators. So those are the last Portiva
- 32:37shoes. And then this is just an old
- 32:39pair of Hoka Speed sixes. Yeah, super warm.
- 32:44But I put in my own spikes on these shoes.
- 32:48So pretty much the same studded trail runner stuff that the Elas
- 32:51Portivas have. But this is just like a lighter,
- 32:54more runnable shoe. I like this on.
- 32:57If you're in like a shoulder season season or you're running
- 33:00locally where you have a couple patches of snow and ice, but not
- 33:03all, and you want to just wear a regular shoe and not wear the
- 33:06big gore Tex shoe. I just put these spikes in and I
- 33:09think these spikes are from a kit, maybe from a lost Portiva
- 33:13kit. So all that I did was there's
- 33:15like a screw and then you just screw it into like whatever lugs
- 33:18that you want to have the spikes.
- 33:20So that's what I that's what I have for footwear there and yes,
- 33:26the Gators. So this is when I first got into
- 33:31hiking. I had a pair of like the the
- 33:33knee high hiking Gators. Actually just sold those
- 33:36recently for like, you know, 5 bucks or something, but I had a
- 33:40pair of knee high Gators and I really like them.
- 33:44But when I started running more, I just felt like when I would
- 33:48get done with the run, my entire shin would just be soaking wet
- 33:53and, and I was like, I, I need like just ankle ones because
- 33:58honestly, if I need Gators up to my knees for hiking, I'm, I'm
- 34:03probably going to pick a different, a different trail,
- 34:07mountain Rd. indoor tremble, whatever.
- 34:10I really, I don't do as many trail breaking missions or, or
- 34:14kind of a long term hiking things.
- 34:16But I think maybe this is like something I'll talk about.
- 34:18And I feel like I mentioned a little bit, but I these days
- 34:22that I really am trying to become a better runner and I'm
- 34:27really trying to get faster, get more fit, get stronger.
- 34:30And I think those like long like 6 hour slogs in snowshoes or
- 34:34whatever just don't really, you know, obviously aerobically
- 34:37they're great. They're mentally you're going to
- 34:39get stronger. But I just don't, they don't
- 34:44really help me on my goals right now as much.
- 34:49So I used to steer clear of like crazy hiking missions.
- 34:51That's why. So some people may say this
- 34:53guy's soft now, but it is what it is.
- 34:56One other thing that I actually had on my drawing rack.
- 34:58I don't know how it got in here is like a running belt.
- 35:01This is I used to wear a running belt a lot.
- 35:04This is just a Solomon one naked naked where it makes a really
- 35:08good belt. I've heard, but I have AI have
- 35:14the Tarragonada shorts that have a built in running belt.
- 35:17The Tarragonada shorts, if you don't, I don't know if I'm
- 35:19saying that right, but they're like super cheap stuff.
- 35:22Go look them up online. They're really good and I like
- 35:24the shorts and they have a built in belt.
- 35:26So I'll just put like a couple snacks, my gloves or whatever
- 35:29keys, emergency blanket if I'm if I'm just wearing a belt,
- 35:32stuff like that in there. So I do use a running belt a
- 35:35lot. OK, let's get into layers.
- 35:39Let's get into my layers because I have a few things to talk
- 35:43about layers. So we'll start super Bass.
- 35:46What do I wear for socks? Oh, these aren't this is our
- 35:49mish mask. This is miss masking pair of
- 35:51socks. OK, well, one of these socks is
- 35:55just like a a lightweight Darn Tough sock.
- 35:59I mean, shout out Darn Tough, shout out Vermont.
- 36:02I have a lightweight and then mid weight just regular hiking
- 36:05socks 90% of the time. 99% of the time that is like enough
- 36:10thickness for what I need. I'm trying to move when I'm out
- 36:13there. I'm not doing long hiking
- 36:15missions like I just said. So I don't need like a ton of
- 36:19oomph in my socks. Those in a gore Tex is like as
- 36:21warm as my feet need to be. So just a light wear pair of any
- 36:26socks. If I don't have those, if I
- 36:27don't have those clean like I will just pair wear like any
- 36:31pair really of socks. I don't know if my feet just
- 36:34don't get cold, but that's what works for me.
- 36:38And then the my 1 trick, I have one pair that's like my golden
- 36:41pair. I think I got these socks in
- 36:43like a middle school or something when I was
- 36:45snowboarding, but they're a super long pair of say Duluth
- 36:50maybe you know, just regular. I don't know what these are
- 36:53socks, some sort of polyester sock, but these go up to almost
- 36:58my knee. So we're just talking about the
- 37:01gator's going up to my knee. I think that, you know, an
- 37:03impermeable Gator just keeps keeps the heat in.
- 37:06But this trick, and this is a Mike King trick shout out, he
- 37:11would always say, dude, you want a long sock in the winter
- 37:14because you just get basically all this extra warmth on your
- 37:18legs for no cost. Like, like, no, you don't have
- 37:22to wear like an extra leg layer because sometimes it could be
- 37:24too hot, too much stuff. So like, dude, this is like half
- 37:27of a leg layer because it goes up to your knee.
- 37:31So one thing that I think about in the winter, if it's not super
- 37:35warm out, some people will see me running in shorts and they're
- 37:38like, this guy's an idiot. But what they don't know is I
- 37:41usually will have that layer of long shorts underneath for my
- 37:48sock. And then I will have a layer
- 37:51like a very thin layer, which I think I have.
- 37:54Do I have something just like a long John, Right.
- 37:59So I have long Johns on. I have the the the thick socks
- 38:03and then I wear shorts. And so you would think like this
- 38:06guy's just running in shorts. That's crazy.
- 38:08But actually my entire leg is super warm.
- 38:12The only thing that is exposed and doesn't have like a a good
- 38:15thick layer on it is my knee is like your kneecap.
- 38:19And what it actually does is it just allows ventilation for your
- 38:24whole leg. So you have one little area
- 38:26where it's not super covered, but as long as it's not really
- 38:30cold, like I've played around this with temperatures enough so
- 38:33I kind of know the range of when I can get away with this and I
- 38:35don't need pants. But it just gives you like an
- 38:38insulated layer to let out a lot of air and all the heat that
- 38:42you're they're building up. And then the rest of your leg is
- 38:44warm. That's like a little bit of a
- 38:46nice trick for, for, for the socks there.
- 38:50So that's kind of all I have for socks.
- 38:53Where was that? Yeah, like I said, I have, I
- 38:55don't know if I have them right here, but I have a, a pair of
- 38:57like just long Johns that I'll put on.
- 39:01I also have a pair of this is a this isn't like a, this is like
- 39:05actual tights. These are like wind tights.
- 39:08I usually don't just wear tights.
- 39:09I don't know, I usually just don't just wear tights, but this
- 39:13is like on a really cold day. If I need tights and something
- 39:15else, I'll throw those on underneath just like a thicker
- 39:19first layer. And then I just have a pair of
- 39:21just regular wind, you know, craft wind pants that I that
- 39:26I'll wear. I think the butt is doesn't have
- 39:29that like wind layer. So your butt actually can get
- 39:34really cold, but it also can can cool you down pretty well.
- 39:38So that is like the pair that I usually wear with like long
- 39:41drones underneath. And then I have a pair of these.
- 39:44I think these are Bay leaf cycling pants.
- 39:48I don't these are like, I got these a while ago, but they're
- 39:51very insulated and these things are so warm.
- 39:54So Bay leaf insulated cycling pants are what I usually wear on
- 39:59like the Super cold days and like how many times in the
- 40:02winter do I actually need to wear those?
- 40:04Probably only a couple like they're almost too warm for
- 40:07anything I do. But I haven't podcasting in
- 40:10them, so shout out. So those are like that.
- 40:13Yeah, those are all the leg layers that I use.
- 40:17I thought I had a pair of my thermals, but maybe I didn't put
- 40:20it in here. OK.
- 40:21And then up top. What am I wearing?
- 40:25Just like down low? I have like a just an insulated
- 40:27like a thermal layer, some sort of polyester.
- 40:30I think I got these on Amazon like a long time ago.
- 40:34I think they're like very nice name brand things and and
- 40:37expensive things that you can buy and they probably work
- 40:39better. But I think for most, you know,
- 40:41most days and most gear things, you don't need to go super
- 40:45expensive for this stuff. Just get like polyester wool
- 40:48layers and that'll work. So usually what I'm wearing up
- 40:52top and oh boy, I don't even know if you do this right now,
- 40:55usually will be wearing an in like a like a thermal layer.
- 40:59And then I will wear one or two T-shirts depending on basically
- 41:05depending on how cold it is. And again, like this guy's
- 41:08running in T-shirts. What I usually do is on the way
- 41:11up, if I'm going, if it's not super cold and I'm working
- 41:13pretty hard, I just one or two T-shirts will be enough.
- 41:17I like like a vest, but a vest is usually too warm.
- 41:20So, so the T-shirt really does a good job of keeping that your
- 41:23core body kind of like warmed up a little bit.
- 41:26And two of them does an even better job.
- 41:28And on the way up, I'll just wear that.
- 41:30I'm working pretty hard. You can kind of gauge your body
- 41:33temperature. And then once you get to the
- 41:35top, you throw on an extra layer or that windbreaker.
- 41:40Usually for me, it's just that windbreaker.
- 41:42I put that windbreaker on and then you're good to go.
- 41:46That's what I wear a lot in the winter.
- 41:48I think a lot of people dress too warm in the winter.
- 41:50They're taking layers off, they get too sweaty, yadda yadda.
- 41:53But yeah, so I'll just wear 2 T-shirts and I don't even know
- 41:57if I can actually do this, but a lot of the times I'll be wearing
- 42:04this bad boy little run Mountain peak shirt.
- 42:09Yeah, I was, I was like thinking about this today when I put this
- 42:12in the bin. I was like, I want to, I want to
- 42:14show off the shirt a little bit, but I'm actually maybe I'll do 2
- 42:17takes. I'm sorry folks, these are not
- 42:19for sale only. I have a couple of them, but
- 42:22maybe in the future I can make more take.
- 42:27And the second one, I was going to say there's a potential that
- 42:31I will put these shirts on my website for anyone interested.
- 42:36Part of me was like, well, let's just say the merch business
- 42:40trying to get these shirts made-up has such a headache to
- 42:43printing all these things. I don't have many sizes, lots of
- 42:47things I had to send back all this, all this stuff.
- 42:49And I don't have a lot of these shirts.
- 42:51So I don't want to like put it out there and have people order
- 42:53and then be like, oh, I actually don't have this.
- 42:55So I was like, I don't know if I could actually do this, but if
- 42:59this, if you're listening to this, it means I, I put the
- 43:03shirts on the website, I'm not going to do them very expensive.
- 43:06Like I don't know, maybe like 10 or 15 bucks or something.
- 43:08Like I'm not trying to make a bunch of money off this stuff.
- 43:12But anyone who really wants a shirt and you're hearing this,
- 43:16yeah, go to my website. There's a, there is a, a green
- 43:20shirt. And then like I said, if it's
- 43:22really cold out and you need 2 T-shirts to stay a little bit
- 43:25warmer, there's a white shirt. So those are the, those are the
- 43:28run mountain peak shirts, guys. Yeah, I don't have a lot of
- 43:31these I made. You may just go look on the
- 43:33website. There'll be one that's like sold
- 43:35out. But yeah, I'm going to, I'll try
- 43:38to get these on the website. If you haven't.
- 43:39If you want to get a shirt, get a shirt.
- 43:41But two polyester nice made with a nice like a nice brand or logo
- 43:46that you like. Boom.
- 43:47Get those shirts for your winter running.
- 43:51OK, thousand shirts and then one last upper layer.
- 43:55This is also a Bay leaf, so shout out good, good company.
- 44:00It's like a wool. This is a wool or polyester,
- 44:03whatever. A thicker upper layer.
- 44:05If it's really cold, like single digits -10 plus wind chills.
- 44:10I will throw this on over my shirts and then this plus that
- 44:14windbreaker stuff usually keeps me warm enough through the day.
- 44:20OK, We got two more big layers and that's going to be the bulk
- 44:23of like what I typically use. And then we'll just go through
- 44:27the kind of the extra stuff a little bit quicker.
- 44:30But yeah. And then last, last big layer,
- 44:34the tried and true puffy. Obviously if it's very, very
- 44:38cold, there are most days in the winter you want to have the
- 44:41puffy with you. If anything happens, those
- 44:43things just keep you so warm. It's like a good down puffy,
- 44:46good quality, good to have. And how I usually bring those.
- 44:50There's two ways that I typically bring them.
- 44:53They say that a pound of 1000 lbs of feathers and 1000 lbs of
- 44:59bricks weigh the same. And I'm telling you guys that's
- 45:04wait, what am I trying to say that 2 lbs of of of puffy can
- 45:10weigh different amounts? Yes, 2 lbs of puffy can weigh
- 45:13different amounts. If I just put the puffy in my
- 45:16Solomon pack just as is, it takes up a ton of space.
- 45:20It's a lot of volume and it just I feel like it bugs me more.
- 45:23I don't know if it's drag or whatever.
- 45:24It's not drink, it's not weight, whatever.
- 45:26But what I like to do is really get it tight into a compact
- 45:29little thing. So I have like a big durable
- 45:32rubber band that I will roll this thing up like a sleeping
- 45:35bag, like a like in Seinfeld. The Oh my God, they're, they're
- 45:39rolling the enchiladas too tight.
- 45:43All the people are freaking out that the the enchiladas are
- 45:46squirting out hot juice. I like to roll them super tight.
- 45:50Get it very small because a small tiny rolled up puffy
- 45:55weighs less than the same puffy not rolled up.
- 45:59Quote me on that. The other tricky news, you can
- 46:03roll it up tight and put it in a bag and then shut it up, suck
- 46:06the suck the air out and that can do the same thing just like
- 46:10keep it compact. I just feel like everything in
- 46:11my pack I want to compact and kind of be lighter.
- 46:15And then I talked about I also just have like a, a nice letter
- 46:19like a, an actual winter shell. Like if if I were to go into the
- 46:25Prezi's for a day or something on a cold day like you need like
- 46:28an actual winter shell so. That is, that's that is.
- 46:35Most of my gear, that's all the the like, important gear that I
- 46:38use, I'm trying to think like if I missed anything, I may have
- 46:42stuff like in the laundry or I don't know, I may have things I
- 46:45didn't fully get to. But that's a lot of the gear
- 46:48that I use, like tips and tricks.
- 46:53Yeah, for. Winter stuff and I guess.
- 46:56I will say this, I have gone through the process.
- 46:58I've got rid of a lot of stuff. I try to not have too much.
- 47:02Stuff in my life? Try to.
- 47:03Be more of a minimalist. So I really only keep things
- 47:06that I that I, if I have not used it in the last year,
- 47:09usually I just get rid of it, donate it, sell it, whatever.
- 47:13So I don't have too much stuff in my like accessory hiking
- 47:17stuff, but we'll see what we have in here.
- 47:19This is like stuff that I use once in awhile, but so this is
- 47:22just a full head and neck gaiter with like an A kind of like.
- 47:28The holes for your. Mouth on really cold days.
- 47:31I don't use that too much. I think just like a regular neck
- 47:34gaiter will do most of the trick, but is what it is.
- 47:37I have a light winter hat. This is just I guess a more
- 47:40lightweight one. That's actually like I said
- 47:43before, usually the thick winter hats are too warm for me.
- 47:46That's actually a pretty good lightweight one, but for
- 47:48whatever reason I just don't use it.
- 47:50I just think the Gator with a cat with a ball cap just does
- 47:53does as much headlamp. Obviously I have.
- 47:59Yeah, these are these are Gators.
- 48:01Some of the stuff is in winter stuff.
- 48:02We'll go through this. Oh, all right.
- 48:03I got a couple good things in here that's, you know, doesn't
- 48:07have to apply. I have a pair of sunglasses.
- 48:10I am not a sunglasses person. I pretty much never wear
- 48:14sunglasses. Maybe like one or two days out
- 48:17of the year bites me when I'm like it like above tree line and
- 48:20the snow just beaming sun at me or from on like a lake or
- 48:24something in the in the the the waters just destroying my eyes.
- 48:27But I just don't like wearing them.
- 48:29I don't need I don't wear glasses or contacts.
- 48:31I don't like things on my face. It's just like, I don't know, I
- 48:34just like don't like them. So I I have like an old pair of
- 48:37sunglasses. I use them once in a while.
- 48:39Once in a while cycling, I'll use them.
- 48:40But one thing that I do use once in a while, these are
- 48:45construction glasses. And you, you're probably
- 48:48thinking, Andrew, this, this should be in your, your tool
- 48:52bin, not your running bin. Well, no, they're in my running
- 48:55bin. In the winter when it gets
- 48:58really cold out and you're going for like a, a hard downhill
- 49:03descent, going for a segment or whatever, your eyes will water.
- 49:07For me. It gets like really bad
- 49:08sometimes it's like tears crying, I'm going down this hill
- 49:12and your eyes water. It's just 'cause that cold air
- 49:15is hitting your eyes. It's you know, you're going so
- 49:17fast that it makes you tear up. And instead of buying like a
- 49:21nice expensive pair of glasses you can just use like these
- 49:25cheap construction glasses. It's just see through.
- 49:27It's just, there's no prescription or anything.
- 49:29It just keeps the winds out of your eyes when you're bombing a
- 49:32downhill in the winter. So those are, these are like
- 49:35winter downhill glasses, goggles kind of.
- 49:40I do have a pair of goggles. I don't love wearing goggles.
- 49:43I've talked about it before. Don't love getting out on
- 49:45goggles. If I need goggles, I'll probably
- 49:47just stay below a tree line. Here's the tool kits for those,
- 49:52those little studs that I put in my shoes.
- 49:55This is just like what the wrench looks like.
- 49:57I guess I could show you. But yeah, this is La Sportiva.
- 50:00I was right about that. And yeah, it's just like this
- 50:04tool. And then you have these, it's
- 50:06just this tool and you have these little studs and you just
- 50:08screw it into your shoe. So I have that in there.
- 50:14First aid kit there's just some mist first aid in there that I
- 50:17don't bring with me. I have a Garmin in reach,
- 50:19another bivy Body Glide, Vaseline, an extra pair of an
- 50:27extra poncho, an extra emergency blankets.
- 50:30Yeah, that's all the stuff that I have in there.
- 50:32Some wipes. I said in reach, another pair of
- 50:35black diamond, black diamond micro tiny spikes.
- 50:40Yeah. So the those black micro diamond
- 50:43tiny spikes, if it is super snowy, like you have really
- 50:47loose snow and you're running fast on a steep descent
- 50:50downhill, those things just come off your shoes pretty.
- 50:54I don't know if I have like too big of a size, but they just
- 50:57come off your shoes a lot. I've heard, I've heard it from
- 51:00other people too. So yeah, if you're wearing
- 51:02those, those light black diamond micro spikes, just be careful
- 51:06that they don't fly off. I actually when I ordered them,
- 51:09I shouldn't even say this. No, I can't.
- 51:10I mean, this is a what is that statute of limitations, which I
- 51:15don't think is how it supplies, but I ordered those, those,
- 51:18those spikes once and they just sent me two of them for no
- 51:21reason. They billed me for one, they
- 51:22sent me two. So I just had a backup pair and
- 51:26I guess I'll just put that on the Internet.
- 51:27I hope Black Diamond doesn't come from me.
- 51:29Like, I guess I could have sent them back, but I just didn't.
- 51:33So they're kind of expensive and and they fly off.
- 51:36So maybe that maybe that's just like they send everybody two
- 51:38bears because they know they fly off and then people don't
- 51:41complain about it. But I guess I complain and I out
- 51:44outed myself. Yeah.
- 51:46Black Diamond don't come for me. Yeah.
- 51:48What is statute of limitations? I think it's if something a long
- 51:52time ago happens, you can't get in trouble for it.
- 51:55But I'm pretty sure it's only if people find out about it.
- 52:00Like if something happened 20 years ago and you get caught
- 52:02now, you can you can get in trouble.
- 52:04But if you get caught 20 years ago, people find out about it 20
- 52:07years ago, but then they don't charge you for 20 years, then
- 52:11it's you're free off. So yeah, yeah, don't buy time
- 52:17and don't come after me. That's all I'm saying.
- 52:21What else do we have in here? Do I have anything in here?
- 52:23Extra batteries. I have a whistle.
- 52:26I think whistles are. Whistles are that's one of the
- 52:2810 essentials. Like I talked about.
- 52:30Blinking lights, matches, Leuco tape, some blister kit stuff.
- 52:35Extra lights, extra batteries in this one.
- 52:38Yeah, nothing too crazy. OK, that was my full gear kit.
- 52:46So I hope, I hope that was helpful.
- 52:49I hope that was, I'm sure I missed a few things, but that is
- 52:53like the gist of what I bring with me.
- 52:55So hopefully that kind of helps some of you guys out give you
- 52:59some ideas. I feel like I've learned a lot
- 53:02of, you know, you take gear tips and, and, and yeah, different,
- 53:08different clothing stuff or whatever from lots of different
- 53:11people and you kind of come up with your own kit that works for
- 53:14you. And so, you know, if you can get
- 53:17like one or two tips out of here that you think is good and can
- 53:19kind of like up your kit, that would be that would be super
- 53:21helpful. But yeah, that's pretty much all
- 53:24the things that I have. I'm trying to think if there's
- 53:26anything I'm missing. I think that's pretty much it As
- 53:31far as the kit stuff. Yeah, I go really light.
- 53:33Like I said, to each his own. Like, I don't know.
- 53:38Well, I've talked about this. Before like risk in the
- 53:39mountains, anytime you go out there, you are.
- 53:43You're, you're, you're there's risk that something could
- 53:47happen. And everyone has different kind
- 53:49of like weights on how much risk that they're willing to take.
- 53:52And you know, if you're on a lot of these 4000 footers in the
- 53:56whites or wherever you are, if you're on a popular trail on the
- 54:00weekends, even in the winter nowadays, you're going to run
- 54:03into people. There's going to be so many
- 54:04people on the trail that I think.
- 54:10Yeah, on those days it's it's hard.
- 54:12I I. Think for for people to get into
- 54:14serious trouble because there's just people out there.
- 54:16But if you're on a trail all by yourself, you're the last person
- 54:19on the trail. You're at night, it's super
- 54:21cold, all these things, no one else is out.
- 54:23That's when things are really, really risky.
- 54:24So when there's more people, you can go a little bit lighter, get
- 54:28away with it. You know, you're just going to
- 54:29get a couple snarky comments from hikers.
- 54:31But if, if you're if you're on your own, definitely be
- 54:36self-sufficient. Always have a plan.
- 54:39Like I said, the 10 essentials are really good.
- 54:41Everyone make sure you have your hike safeguard.
- 54:43I feel like at the beginning of the year, a lot of people forget
- 54:47about the hike safeguard and I do sometimes.
- 54:49Luckily for for. So you're in a hike safeguard or
- 54:53a hunting and fishing license in New Hampshire and you get the
- 54:55same kind of benefits. But yeah, those a couple months
- 54:58in the beginning, like those are the months that actually
- 55:00something serious could happen. And then if you don't have your
- 55:02hunt safeguard or hike safeguard, hunt, hunt and
- 55:05fishing license and you have to get rescued for whatever reason,
- 55:08you can get hit with a big bill. So make sure you have that.
- 55:12And yeah, like I said, this was not a safety talk.
- 55:15Don't come after me if something goes wrong with you.
- 55:18But OK, that is the full gear talk.
- 55:21Let me know if you missed anything.
- 55:22If you have any tips and tricks, gear things, let me know.
- 55:26I guess polls, now that I'm thinking of it, I do have polls
- 55:30and I didn't bring those. I guess I wouldn't really think
- 55:33those as as like winter. I know some people in the winter
- 55:36do use those a lot more, but I just don't use poles really.
- 55:39So I didn't bring those. But that's another gear tip that
- 55:42I actually I do have. But yeah, let me know if I miss
- 55:45anything, if you guys have any tips or tricks that you use that
- 55:49works well that I didn't talk about, like comment it or, or
- 55:53just like e-mail it to me. And 'cause I'm always looking
- 55:56for like, you know, better ways to, to be more efficient and get
- 55:59my kit just very dialed for the mountains.
- 56:03That's all we got. The one thing I didn't want to
- 56:05forget about is the tongue twister that I was talking
- 56:08about. SO2 tongue twisters that I want
- 56:11to do. And I, and I guess, you know,
- 56:13it's just me on here right now. We got we got some guests coming
- 56:16on, but it's just me, two tongue twisters head a couple me and a
- 56:21couple of people were were having fun with the first one
- 56:25rear wheel drive. OK, This one was like, I don't
- 56:29know if I've, I don't, I've never heard.
- 56:31I don't know if this is a tongue twister, but me and Josh and
- 56:33we're talking about it. We're like, wow, say that five
- 56:35times faster, three times faster, whatever.
- 56:37Couldn't do it. This is on like one of those
- 56:39snowy days where you're just talking about like 4 wheel drive
- 56:42or something. So, but rear wheel drive.
- 56:45And I guess I've had like a little bit of practice or
- 56:47whatever, but I haven't, not today like when we were talking.
- 56:50But I'll give it to you guys. This is my as I'm going to try a
- 56:54few times as hard as I can to do rear wheel drive three times
- 56:57fast. OK, here we go tongue twister
- 57:00time. And I'm really bad at talking
- 57:02anyway. I have a problem with like
- 57:04enunciating, mumbling words. Sometimes letters stuff don't
- 57:07make sense to me. So this is like just double
- 57:09trouble for me. And it's also crazy that I have
- 57:12a podcast, which is like just talking.
- 57:14But I think it's I think it's OK.
- 57:16I can get through the podcast OK Rear wheel drive, rear wheel
- 57:21drive, rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive.
- 57:23That wasn't actually that bad, but I was saying rear rear wheel
- 57:27drive, rear wheel, rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive, rear
- 57:29wheel drive rear What? Holy smokes, it's really hard
- 57:34to. Rear hit the.
- 57:35The R at the end of rear rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive,
- 57:40rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive, rear
- 57:42wheel drive, rear drive. I think I'm just saying real,
- 57:46real wheel drive. But OK, that was that was the
- 57:49real drive rear. That was the rear wheel drive
- 57:53one rear wheel drive, rear wheel drive is rear.
- 57:57Just a weird word like is that a word we're not supposed to say
- 58:00and think about Rear, rear, rear, rear, rear wheel drive.
- 58:07OK, that was the first one and the second one.
- 58:09This one I had not heard before, but this one I think is an
- 58:11actual tongue twister. It's red leather, yellow
- 58:15leather, which at first I'm like you're saying leather twice,
- 58:19like I don't know, that's kind of weird.
- 58:20Like I was saying, is it red leather, yellow weather?
- 58:23No, it's red leather, yellow leather and three times fast.
- 58:28This one when I say, and it's been a while, it's kind of cold
- 58:31today, so my mouth is also going to be it's like a little bit
- 58:33harder, but my mouth just stops. We're going to try this.
- 58:36OK, Red leather, yellow leather, red leather, yellow leather, red
- 58:40leather, red leather, red leather, yellow, red.
- 58:49It's like I just stopped think like being able to talk.
- 58:53Red Lily, yellow, red leather, red leather, yellow, red
- 58:55leather, yellow the red leather, yellow the red leather.
- 58:59Oh my God. So stupid So.
- 59:02Stupid. This is what you get.
- 59:03This is what you get. Red leather, yellow.
- 59:06Weather red weather Yellow. Red leather, red.
- 59:10Yeah. If I go too fast, I get real
- 59:12drive. Real drive, real drive.
- 59:13That one's much easier. Red leather, Yellow.
- 59:15Red leather. Yellow leather.
- 59:17Red leather, yellow leather. This is.
- 59:21That one's hard. OK, The real drive isn't, I
- 59:24don't think one. But try red leather, yellow
- 59:26leather. Holy smokes.
- 59:27And ask a bunch of people to do it because everyone, like, is
- 59:29always like, I could say that. And then they just seem stupid.
- 59:32But all right, that's all I have this week.
- 59:35This is a cold weather gear talk.
- 59:38We got to get through this cold. It's it's this, this is
- 59:41horrible. Every weekend.
- 59:42I have AI have a a theory like a lot of times in the summer and
- 59:47stuff, it just rains every weekend.
- 59:50And in the winter, like these coldest days are just every
- 59:52weekend. And it's like if you work during
- 59:54the week, every weekend, you're just hit with these bad
- 59:56conditions. Does it have something to do
- 59:59with our commuting pattern? Like people, commuting Monday to
- 1:00:03Friday changes the dynamics of the weather.
- 1:00:07I don't know, could be Oh, also somebody commented on my podcast
- 1:00:11last last week, Angus King the third is like as like the son of
- 1:00:16a senator of a Maine US senator or something like that.
- 1:00:19And I just I just shouted him out because I thought Angus King
- 1:00:23the third was like a funny, super funny, cool name, but
- 1:00:26somebody comments to that was too.
- 1:00:27I didn't know that. And it sounds like he's like AI
- 1:00:31looked him up. I don't know if he's like a the
- 1:00:34governor or something. I don't know.
- 1:00:35But Angus King, the third. Yeah, somebody coming to that
- 1:00:38last video. But OK, I just popped into my
- 1:00:40brain. That's all I got this week.
- 1:00:42Thanks for sticking with us. Stay in tune for this episode.
- 1:00:46I don't. Why did I say it?
- 1:00:47Stick with us. Stay in tune.
- 1:00:48That's what you said at the beginning.
- 1:00:49I sometimes I just, you know, thanks for watching.
- 1:00:52I appreciate everybody. Hope you enjoyed.
- 1:00:55Hope you helped with the gears, this gear talk.
- 1:00:57See you next time. Peace.
- 1:01:01But before we dive into the gear talk, 62nd training tip for you
- 1:01:05all. Right now I'm currently taking a
- 1:01:07deload week and I think that a lot of people are not taking
- 1:01:13down weeks or deload weeks in their training as much as they
- 1:01:16should be. So for me, every three to four
- 1:01:19weeks I will take a down week and I'll reduce my training like
- 1:01:2330 to 50%. This is a popular Rd.
- 1:01:30I'll keep it in. Now, Is this 62nd talk?
- 1:01:32I'll keep it in, yeah. So I'll reduce my training 30 to
- 1:01:3730 to 50%. Usually it's like if I'm
- 1:01:40training 2 hours on a day, I'll just go for like 45 minutes or
- 1:01:43an hour for each of my stuff. I'll keep my speed stuff in, but
- 1:01:47it really just allows your body to adapt to the training.
- 1:01:51And I'm going to restart this. OK.
- 1:01:57But before we get into the gear talk, I want to do a 62nd
- 1:02:00training tip. So I'm currently OK.
- 1:02:08But before OK, before we get into the gear talk though, I
- 1:02:12want to do a 62nd training tip. The tip for this week is current
- 1:02:19OK. Before we get into the gear
- 1:02:20talk, I want to do a 62nd training tip.
- 1:02:29This would be a funny one to. Leave.
- 1:02:30Yeah. I don't know if I will.
- 1:02:33OK, before we get. Into the gear talk.
- 1:02:35Though I want to do a 62nd training tip.
- 1:02:37So the tip for this week is I think more people should be
- 1:02:42taking D load. OK, before we get into the
- 1:02:47training talk today. I want to do.
