- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:16Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:21I am Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:25and happy to have you here with me on Catholic Spirit Radio every Saturday and
- 0:30Sunday evening from 8 to 8.30.
- 0:32It's been an interesting week, and we'll get into that in just a moment.
- 0:37I should say that Good News is a program about good news, the gospel of Jesus
- 0:41Christ, and we look at the readings from this weekend's Mass and give a little
- 0:46reflection on it and talk about how it affects us in our life today.
- 0:51So my week, where to start? It has been a busy, busy week.
- 0:56I have bird feeders. I love the outdoors and I love outdoor animals.
- 1:00I get, now I'm not really what you would consider out in the country.
- 1:04I'm in a subdivision, the north end of the town.
- 1:08And I get in my backyard, I have a camera that clicks on with motion, right?
- 1:13So I get possum and raccoon and rabbits at night.
- 1:19You know, you kind of expect that. But lately, I've had coyote in my backyard and fox in my backyard.
- 1:26A few times, I mean, a couple times a week, a fox walking through.
- 1:30A couple of them because they're different sizes. So I know I have at least two.
- 1:33And there's at least two or three coyote because one's really big.
- 1:37The others are kind of small. But one is, hopefully, they're eating rabbit.
- 1:41Hoping because that's the bane of my existence as a gardener are the rabbits.
- 1:47And I'd like them to go away. And having a couple coyotes wander through at
- 1:51night would maybe not decrease the population, but dissuade them from hanging around would be fine.
- 1:57So I'm enjoying all the wildlife, but the birds, they have been voracious.
- 2:03So I have a number of bird feeders. I have one, it's a large tube.
- 2:08It holds about, I don't know, eight, 10 cups of bird seed, right?
- 2:13In the last four weeks, they have gone through 50 pounds of bird.
- 2:21In one feeder, 50 pounds of birdseed.
- 2:25Now, luckily, I can pick it up pretty cheap, but 50 pounds from one.
- 2:30I have four feeders and good grief, 50 pounds of seed.
- 2:36So it's like I'm constantly, I just refilled it. I filled it two days ago and
- 2:40I just refilled it again today.
- 2:43And my gosh, and birdseed is not inexpensive, but I love, I mean,
- 2:47I get a huge variety of birds.
- 2:50So i really enjoy it but
- 2:5350 pounds of bird seed so what
- 2:56else is going on so we we got a new night table next to the bed right and we
- 3:02bought it online and it comes disassembled easy to assemble comes with instructions
- 3:09everything you need it's like i don't know 36 parts to put this thing together.
- 3:16It reminds me when my son was young, and we bought him a tricycle for Christmas, his first tricycle.
- 3:24And the instructions were evidently written in a foreign country by someone
- 3:31not really good at English.
- 3:33And I'm going step by step. I'm being really careful. I'm going step by step
- 3:37through the instruction book.
- 3:38And I get to one part, and it gives this whole series of things to do.
- 3:42And I did that. And it just didn't look right. It just wasn't working.
- 3:47And the next line I read is, but before you do that.
- 3:54And I, what do you mean? You had me do like these five steps.
- 3:58This is, but before you do that, do this.
- 4:01So I had to take everything apart and go back and do that one.
- 4:04So it was just crazy. Well, this nightstand has no instructions.
- 4:09It has illustrations.
- 4:12Now, I don't know what this illustrator was drinking, but my goodness,
- 4:16it had to be really good stuff.
- 4:18This is some of the worst illustrations I have ever seen in my life.
- 4:23So you're just guessing as to what goes in, and the parts are all alphabetical.
- 4:32But they're handwritten, they're hand-drawn letters. And so you really can't tell.
- 4:39There's some of the letters that look an awfully lot alike.
- 4:42And it was just, it took my wife and I probably three hours to put this little nightstand together.
- 4:50And what really worries me is from the same company, I have a dresser coming.
- 4:57And yeah, it's like, again, like 36 pieces. And I have a feeling that the same
- 5:02guy on the same drinking spree probably did the instructions.
- 5:06So we were laughing today as we tried to finish this thing up,
- 5:10what it's possibly going to be like to do an entire dresser now.
- 5:15So that's just some of the stuff going, okay, we have time. I'll tell this story.
- 5:20So guess what, John? I have a heart defect.
- 5:24I had no idea. It turns out it's congenital. I've had it since birth.
- 5:30I had no idea. Now I had to contact my brothers to tell them so they can go get checked out.
- 5:37I had to call my son and tell him so he can go get it checked out.
- 5:40And had no idea. I got a bad valve, right?
- 5:45And got to swallow a camera the other day just to prove that I had a bad valve.
- 5:50And I do have a bad valve, John.
- 5:53And it's, I'm not scared. I must say, I'm not happy about it.
- 5:58But I'm not scared about it. You know, God's will be done.
- 6:03And if this cup could pass me
- 6:05by, I wouldn't mind that. But if this is the cup I have to drink of, fine.
- 6:10I'm not really worried about what comes next. If anything comes next, if.
- 6:16But there's going to be surgery, evidently. Hopefully not the big surgery.
- 6:20Hopefully a more minor surgery is going to be able to fix this particular problem.
- 6:25But yeah, so I've been taking a bunch of tests for the last couple weeks to
- 6:28see just what the situation is.
- 6:32And it's a problem. It's called BAV disease, bicuspid, which I thought was in
- 6:39the mouth, bicuspid aortic valve disease.
- 6:45So your valve to your aorta has like three little leaflets that open and close
- 6:51as part of the valve. I have two.
- 6:54And because of that, my heart, my whole life has been inefficient.
- 6:57And I never really realized that.
- 6:59Yeah. So it's caused some other
- 7:01related complications. But the root cause seems to be this BAV thing.
- 7:08So I find out Tuesday what they're going to do about it. And I'm hoping they're
- 7:15going to be able to do this.
- 7:16Medicine just amazes me what they're able to do in modern medicine.
- 7:20Just absolutely amazes me.
- 7:22The things they can repair and the way they can repair it. I mean,
- 7:26I remember as a kid when they did the first heart transplant.
- 7:29I distinctly remember the news of that and how amazing that was.
- 7:33I mean, now they're doing bypass surgeries and all kinds of wild stuff.
- 7:38So with this BAV thing evidently this is the one where they take a pig's valve
- 7:44and they now this is not the technical explanation this is kind of a layman's
- 7:50explanation of it they take a pig valve and which is.
- 7:57Tricuspid, just like mine should be but isn't, and they can fold it up,
- 8:01and they can start down in the leg at the femoral artery, and they can pass
- 8:08this up through the femoral artery all the way up to the aortic valve and unfold
- 8:13it and come back out again,
- 8:16and it takes about an hour.
- 8:19And you're in the hospital overnight, from what I understand,
- 8:22and you're home the next day.
- 8:25It's called a TAVR, I believe it is, a process that they'd use.
- 8:30Something aortic valve replacement, right? And they do this at a hospital.
- 8:36I'm sure they do it at several hospitals. Around here, they do it in Peoria.
- 8:40And it is so popular.
- 8:42And this problem I have isn't the only thing that causes these bad valves,
- 8:47but it's so popular that on Tuesdays at this hospital, that's pretty much all they do.
- 8:54It's this one process. People wind up all day long getting this process done.
- 9:00And it's like an hour in and then they watch you overnight and then they send
- 9:04you home. And I just think that's incredible.
- 9:08God created such a magnificent machine in the human body and such great wisdom
- 9:14that he's allowed us to have to care for it.
- 9:18I had a surgeon tell me one time, I thanked him for saving my mother's life
- 9:23in a very tricky surgery, and he said, oh, I don't save lives.
- 9:28He says, God saves lives. I send bills.
- 9:30So I like that attitude in a surgeon, that he has recognition for who the real healer is.
- 9:38So that's been my life. The birds and the nightstands and the wacky heart.
- 9:46So if any of you are dealing with any of those issues, my prayers are with you,
- 9:51especially if it's a health-wise.
- 9:54I pray that God's will be done. I don't know what that will is. Only God knows that.
- 9:59But I will share with you the words of Christ that He says so often, be not afraid.
- 10:05Be not afraid. There are worse things in the world than meeting your Savior.
- 10:12So, just be calm and be faithful and do the best you can to keep those around
- 10:19you calm and comfortable.
- 10:22And I hope things go well for you, but most of all, I hope God's will for you be done.
- 10:27With that, we will take a break for just a few words from some of our friends.
- 10:34And when we come back, we'll be looking at the readings from the second Sunday
- 10:39of Lent. You're listening to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 10:42Stay tuned. Good News will be right back on Catholic Spirit Radio.

- 11:33Welcome back to Good News. I am Deacon Al Lundy, and you're listening to Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 11:38If you have questions about your Catholic faith or about Christianity in general,
- 11:44we invite you to drop us an email here at goodnews at catholicspiritradio.org,
- 11:51and we'll be glad to answer your questions on the air.
- 11:55This last Sunday, got to attend a rite of sending at the cathedral at St.
- 12:04Mary's in Peoria for our diocese.
- 12:07And wow, I was floored.
- 12:10I was there because I'm a sponsor for a friend of mine who's coming into the Catholic faith.
- 12:16Wonderful man, and his wife is coming in as well. I've known him,
- 12:20gosh, probably 30 years since I was friends with his dad.
- 12:24And so I knew this young man when he had just gotten out of college and have gone to him.
- 12:29He's a physician, been going to him most of my adult life and most of his adult life as well.
- 12:36But they're coming into the Catholic Church. So we had a special rite of sending
- 12:41at the Mass at our home parish.
- 12:44And then we all go to Peoria where they are received by the bishop,
- 12:48called by name and received by the bishop.
- 12:52How many just from the Peoria diocese, And I know that we broadcast into other
- 12:57dioceses that are larger than Peoria.
- 13:00And so folks of you who are listening in the Springfield diocese,
- 13:03you're going to say, oh, that's all?
- 13:05Because Springfield had even more than Peoria did. Rockford may have even had more.
- 13:10I don't know, but I was really impressed with Peoria's number.
- 13:14Last year, we had 340 people enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass diocese-wide.
- 13:21What would you guess for this year?
- 13:24900? I wish. That's more like Springfield did.
- 13:27680. So twice, twice the number. I think we can do 900 next year.
- 13:33I wouldn't be surprised.
- 13:34And most of these are young people.
- 13:36I was so moved and so excited by the number of college kids coming into the faith.
- 13:45I didn't keep count, but I would guess just from Newman at the University of
- 13:50Illinois, there were over 60.
- 13:52Yeah, and then ISU, Newman had, I think, a couple dozen.
- 13:58A lot of young people. Our parish has 13 coming into the faith,
- 14:04and we have another parish in our town that has 30.
- 14:08So, I mean, that's just such a great sign, and so many of them are young.
- 14:13I'm so excited to see that there's a real resurgence of faith.
- 14:17And talking to some friends of mine who are ministers in some of the Protestant
- 14:21faiths, they're seeing the same thing.
- 14:24They're seeing a lot of young people who were nuns. They didn't practice anything.
- 14:29Turning towards the Christian faith. And that is just so exciting to see.
- 14:35So, if you're not sure, if you're starting to wonder about your relationship
- 14:41with Christ and what it is and what you want it to be, contact your local parish.
- 14:46Talk to a priest or a deacon about what you're feeling.
- 14:49And hopefully, the Holy Spirit is working on you, and that's why you're interested.
- 14:55We'd be happy to talk to you and help you sort out your feelings and find a
- 14:59path towards Christ that's right for you.
- 15:02And I have to believe that's through the church that Christ started, the Catholic Church.
- 15:07So, I just wanted to share that because it was just really neat to see.
- 15:12Our readings for this Sunday, the second Sunday of Lent, come from the book
- 15:17of Genesis, and then from a letter from Paul to Timothy, and then the Gospel
- 15:22of Matthew. The first reading from Genesis, I'm sure you're familiar with.
- 15:26I think the gospel reading, you're probably very familiar with.
- 15:31It's one of the most well-known ones, I think.
- 15:34It's the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountaintop.
- 15:39But the first reading, again, from Genesis.
- 15:42All our readings are basically about transformation, about being changed by
- 15:48an experience with Christ.
- 15:51The Lord said to Abram, go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your
- 15:56father's house to a land that I will show you.
- 15:59I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you. I will make your name
- 16:04great so that you will be a blessing.
- 16:07I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.
- 16:11All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you.
- 16:15And Abraham went as the Lord directed him. The word of the Lord.
- 16:19So here's another, here's a transformation.
- 16:22Abram, who's about to become Abraham.
- 16:26Abram is living in the Chaldeans, the land of Ur, and is pretty comfortable.
- 16:34Ur is a pretty blooming community.
- 16:37It's very modern compared to some of its surrounding communities.
- 16:42It's a big metropolis of trade and worship, but unfortunately not a worship
- 16:49of God, but a worship of a moon god named Nana.
- 16:53And that was not what Abram was into. Abram was a descendant of Shem, son of Noah. Yeah.
- 17:02And just like Noah and his family, Abram and his family were followers of the one true God.
- 17:08And so they were kind of uncomfortable in this land.
- 17:12And so Abram's father said, let's pick up and go. Let's move.
- 17:18And at this time, Abram was probably close to 70, 75 years old.
- 17:25And they walked 600 miles along the Euphrates River to a new territory.
- 17:34And it was in that territory that God came to Abram and said,
- 17:38I want you to leave again and we're going to take you even further to a new
- 17:43land where I'm going to establish you as the head of these many tribes,
- 17:49make you a father of all these nations.
- 17:52And Abram, out of his trust for God, said, let's go. Do with me what you will.
- 18:00And Abram was changed. He went from this just a very kind of small fish in a
- 18:06big tank to a big fish in an even bigger tank.
- 18:09And he was transformed. He was changed into one of the great fathers of the
- 18:15Jewish faith. And the 12 tribes came from Abraham and spread throughout the Middle East.
- 18:24So, a lot of great biblical figures came from Abraham.
- 18:28So, that's our first reading. It's all about trust and transformation.
- 18:33The second reading for this Sunday was a letter from Paul to Timothy,
- 18:37and Paul writes, Beloved, bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the
- 18:42strength that comes from God.
- 18:45He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works,
- 18:49but according to his own design, and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus
- 18:54before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our Savior,
- 18:59Jesus Christ, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light
- 19:05through the gospel, the word of the Lord.
- 19:08So, pretty quick little reading there from that letter.
- 19:12But again, it's about transformation and trust.
- 19:16We have Paul reminding Timothy that he's been changed through Christ,
- 19:23through Christ's passion,
- 19:25resurrection, has changed basically everyone, and has changed all the Christians
- 19:31that Timothy is leading now within his little region that Paul's left him in.
- 19:38And reminds him that this is Christ's doing, not Paul's, that Christ is making this happen.
- 19:45And it's through Christ that death has been destroyed and we've all been transformed.
- 19:52We've all been made immortal again.
- 19:55And he does this through the light of the gospel, through the good news of Christ.
- 20:00So transformation and trust still carrying through this whole weekend.
- 20:05The reading from the gospel according
- 20:06to Matthew, again, is something that most of you have heard about.
- 20:09And I want you to keep transformation and trust in mind here.
- 20:15This is about the transfiguration of Christ in front of Peter, James, and John.
- 20:23And when we talk about it too often, it's focused just on the change that Christ went through.
- 20:29But I want you to think about it from Peter, James, and John's standpoint.
- 20:34They're transformed by what happens on this mountain.
- 20:38They're completely changed.
- 20:41So the gospel goes, Jesus took Peter, James, and John, his brother,
- 20:46and led them up a high mountain by themselves. and he was transfigured before them.
- 20:51His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
- 20:56And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with Jesus.
- 21:01Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Lord, it's good that we're here.
- 21:06If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.
- 21:12And while he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,
- 21:17and from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my beloved Son,
- 21:23with whom I am well pleased.
- 21:25Listen to him. When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.
- 21:31But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise and do not be afraid.
- 21:38And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw that no one else but Jesus alone.
- 21:42And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them,
- 21:46Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the
- 21:51dead. The Gospel of the Lord.
- 21:54So a lot of things to consider with this reading. First of all,
- 21:57why Peter, James, and John? Why did he select those three?
- 22:02Well, this is Jesus' inner circle. And, you know, it's not that unusual.
- 22:07Most rabbis would have a number of followers that they would be teaching,
- 22:13teaching them to be like the rabbi, right?
- 22:16Because that was the whole point of a rabbi having disciples,
- 22:19was not only to teach them what he knew, but to teach them to live like him.
- 22:23And Jesus, being a rabbi, was doing the same thing. And most rabbis would have
- 22:28an inner circle of three disciples.
- 22:31Well, so does Jesus.
- 22:33And it's Peter, James, and John.
- 22:37And what I find interesting is the amount of trust that Jesus has in them.
- 22:43We talked in previous readings about trust in God and the trust in Christ, God incarnate.
- 22:49And now we're looking at Jesus' trust in them.
- 22:52Jesus entrusts Peter as being the vicar of his church, being the steward of his new church.
- 23:01He trusts John to take care of his mother after his death on the cross.
- 23:07And he trusts James to be the first martyr of the apostles.
- 23:13Now, it happened about 10 years from this point, but James was the first to
- 23:19give his life for the gospel, the first apostle to give his life.
- 23:23So you have three people who Christ trusted with his ministry.
- 23:29And we see this in more stories than just this. When Jesus went to the house
- 23:34of the scribe to raise the young girl from her deathbed, who did he let in the house with?
- 23:41And besides the father of the young girl, he took Peter, James, and John.
- 23:45When Jesus went to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane just before his arrest on
- 23:51Holy Thursday, who did he take with him to pray, take further up the mountain?
- 23:56He took Peter, James, and John. So these are his best friends.
- 24:00He cares about these people deeply.
- 24:02And we see that in once they hear the voice of God and they're frightened,
- 24:08Jesus doesn't try to overwhelm them with his power and authority.
- 24:13Instead, he goes and gently touches them and says, don't be afraid.
- 24:17Everything's okay. I'm here.
- 24:19So he's befriending them. He's comforting them.
- 24:23Why do you suppose he took them up the mountain? Why did he want these three
- 24:26to see his transfiguration?
- 24:29Well, his death's about to come. We're just days away from the passion.
- 24:35He wants his best and closest friends among his disciples to really understand who he is.
- 24:45And so he displays himself in all his glory as God so that they can see this isn't just a rabbi.
- 24:53This just isn't a wise person. This isn't just a leader of a new movement.
- 24:58This is God incarnate, and he wants his friends to understand that.
- 25:03So he does this really out of friendship and trust. Why does he tell him not to tell anyone?
- 25:09I always thought that was interesting. Tell no one of the vision until the Son
- 25:14of Man has been raised from the dead. Why is that?
- 25:17Well, once he's raised, then the other disciples will have a better understanding.
- 25:22And they'll have a lot of questions.
- 25:25And now Peter, James, and John can help kind of fill in the blanks to complete
- 25:29the resurrection story for the others.
- 25:32But can you imagine if during the short time between now and when Good Friday
- 25:39comes, if Peter, James, and John had run around telling everybody what they
- 25:43saw, what do you think the Pharisees would do to Peter, James, and John?
- 25:48They would have a very short life, and that's not what Jesus needed of them.
- 25:54That's not what he wanted of them. That was not their purpose.
- 25:58And so he kept them quiet to protect them.
- 26:02And that, again, it's a show of great love and concern. We have a God that loves
- 26:06us, but we also have a God who changes us.
- 26:10Every time we encounter Christ, we are changed.
- 26:15Sometimes we're changed a little. Sometimes we're changed a lot.
- 26:18But you can't come into an encounter with Christ and not be changed.
- 26:23I was changed when I was 13 through an encounter with Christ.
- 26:27I see people changed all the time in OCIA, in the Order of Christian Initiation
- 26:34for Adults, the people who are entering the church between now and finally at the Easter Vigil.
- 26:41I've seen, over the months, huge changes in these people.
- 26:45I take part in Curcio, and every Curcio weekend that we have,
- 26:51I see the Holy Spirit working in huge ways in people, great transformations.
- 26:55I've seen people change their religions because of their encounter with the Holy Spirit.
- 27:01I've seen people leave their jobs because of their encounter with the Holy Spirit.
- 27:06I've seen people become better parents, better spouses, better employers through
- 27:12their encounter with Christ.
- 27:14So, this Lenten season, I want to encourage you to seek out an encounter with the living Christ.
- 27:22And the Church gives you so many ways to do that, besides just the Mass,
- 27:26which is the primary way to encounter Christ in our lives.
- 27:29There's the rest of the sacraments. Through all the sacraments,
- 27:32you gain God's grace. You gain a share in the life and the love of Christ.
- 27:39So, I encourage you to make full use of the sacraments, especially right now.
- 27:44Eucharist and confession, anointing of the sick. These are all very,
- 27:49very important during the Lenten season.
- 27:52Participate in Stations of the Cross. Pretty much every parish right now throughout
- 27:57Lent is going to be doing Stations of the Cross, a beautiful sacramental.
- 28:02I invite everyone to take part in that and to really grow in a,
- 28:08close, personal relationship with the passion, the death, and the resurrection of Christ.
- 28:14Pardon me, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, acts of charity.
- 28:20These are all ways of having a transformative experience through an exposure
- 28:28reunion with Christ our Lord.
- 28:31So that's my take on this weekend's readings.
- 28:37I hope you have a wonderful Lent. I hope you have a meaningful encounter with Christ in your life.
- 28:43And may Almighty God bless you, protect you from all evil, and bring you to
- 28:48everlasting life. Amen. God bless.
