- 1:14Speaker 1: was there and Harvard Law School. I was not there.
- 1:18Speaker 1: He is the sixty second and current Mayor of Houston, Texas.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations. Mayor Sylvester Turner. Hello, Sean,
- 1:27Speaker 1: How you doing, sir? I'm doing fine. How are you doing? Man?
- 1:31Speaker 1: I know you have a business schedule, but I wanted
- 1:33Speaker 1: but you're such a motivating guy. Every time I see
- 1:35Speaker 1: you and hear people talk, listen to you speak, your
- 1:38Speaker 1: game changing emotionally for me, You're You're very inspirational. Now,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I would wanted to bring you on my show just
- 1:43Speaker 1: to share some of that to the to the country.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You know, I know, we we know we're selfish because
- 1:47Speaker 1: we hold on to you in Houston, Texas, but I
- 1:49Speaker 1: feel we need to share you with the world, to
- 1:51Speaker 1: HBCU schools, to my my podcast followers, and also were
- 1:55Speaker 1: broadcasting live in Atlanta, Georgia. Oh no, then you have
- 1:59Speaker 1: to tell other mayor of Atlanta, mayor keeps your Bottoms,
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I said hello. You know, I had a chance
- 2:05Speaker 1: to meet her at the U. S. Commerce of Mayors
- 2:07Speaker 1: back in January, the Moving Together in San Francisco a
- 2:10Speaker 1: few weeks ago. She is going to be an outstanding
- 2:13Speaker 1: mayor for Atlanta. So hello to mayor keep your Bottoms
- 2:17Speaker 1: from City of Houston. Well, guess what she's hearing your
- 2:20Speaker 1: live and I'm gonna get on the show too, because
- 2:21Speaker 1: guess what I got the mayor of Houston. I'm gonna
- 2:23Speaker 1: get the mayor of Atlanta. It's really beautiful. What I
- 2:26Speaker 1: wanted to just bring up a little history because you know,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm from Fifth War, Texas and you from Acres Home,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and we're both proud of the neighborhood where we grew
- 2:33Speaker 1: up in. But they are you know, they weren't. They
- 2:34Speaker 1: aren't considered the plush neighborhoods, you know. And I look
- 2:38Speaker 1: at your history, your father, you know you come from
- 2:41Speaker 1: I have nine I have nine sisters and brothers six
- 2:44Speaker 1: eight sisters and brothers. That makes me have nine children.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And you come from a family of nine children, child
- 2:48Speaker 1: number six. I was child number five, and we got
- 2:53Speaker 1: a lot of similar similarities with Sean. And you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: neither one of my parents graduated from high school and
- 2:59Speaker 1: dad died of cancer when I was thirteen. My mom
- 3:04Speaker 1: literally raised nine kids by herself because she was the
- 3:07Speaker 1: CEO of the Turn of the household. Um, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 1: worked very hard at it and and now you know,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I happened to be the mayor of the fourth largest
- 3:15Speaker 1: city in Nined States. So it was that it was
- 3:18Speaker 1: that mother that made that signed the loan papers that
- 3:21Speaker 1: enabled me to go to Harvard Law School. That's amazing,
- 3:24Speaker 1: that's amazing. I'm literally standing on the shoulders of a
- 3:26Speaker 1: lot of people, and I especially want to give thanks
- 3:29Speaker 1: to my mom and my dad. I feel the same way.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You know, my father's passed away and my mom. The
- 3:34Speaker 1: beauty of my mom seeing me successful is like a
- 3:36Speaker 1: dream come true because you know, you know, all you
- 3:40Speaker 1: want your kids to have a better life than what
- 3:42Speaker 1: you had and then want them to see that you
- 3:44Speaker 1: the mayor the mayor. You know, that's amazing to me
- 3:48Speaker 1: because of the fact that we know where Acre's home
- 3:50Speaker 1: is and I know where Fifth War it is. And
- 3:52Speaker 1: when people look at me, they look at me in
- 3:54Speaker 1: a very in a shining light as do. People look
- 3:56Speaker 1: at you and it puts a lot of pressure on
- 3:58Speaker 1: you as mayor him. But I would tell you I'm
- 4:01Speaker 1: very fortunate. Uh you know, I still have the privilege
- 4:04Speaker 1: of living in the same community in which I was
- 4:06Speaker 1: born to read I'm still in the Acres Home area.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Um and you know, and it's my way of saying
- 4:13Speaker 1: to to to your young folks who come from same
- 4:15Speaker 1: as similar communities as you and I came from. But
- 4:18Speaker 1: they can they can grow up and they can be
- 4:21Speaker 1: the Rashard McDonald's. So they can grow up and be
- 4:23Speaker 1: to subst the Turners. They can be, uh a major entrepreneur,
- 4:27Speaker 1: they can be the mayor of a large city. Uh.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You know. Doesn't mean that life is fair. And let
- 4:33Speaker 1: me quickly say that it doesn't mean the life is fair,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but it doesn't mean that we have to find ways
- 4:38Speaker 1: to navigate through it. Let's talk about Hurricane Harvey came
- 4:43Speaker 1: down there and messed up our city. Yes, but we
- 4:46Speaker 1: had a shining light that came right after that, call
- 4:48Speaker 1: the Houston Astros. Look. Man, Uh, we had we had
- 4:52Speaker 1: more war rain that fell on this city than any
- 4:55Speaker 1: city in the countries in the country's history. Um. About
- 5:00Speaker 1: three hundred and forty five thousand units, uh, single family
- 5:05Speaker 1: homes and apartments were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Um. So
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, we went through our moments, but I would
- 5:12Speaker 1: say the Astros came right back. Um. They called me
- 5:16Speaker 1: to see whether or not they should play their double
- 5:17Speaker 1: hitter against the New York Mets on that weekend immediately
- 5:21Speaker 1: following the storm, and I said, you know, hey, in
- 5:23Speaker 1: this city, we play ball. They won that, they won
- 5:27Speaker 1: that double hitter on that Saturday, and they end up
- 5:30Speaker 1: winning the World Series. So, um, this is a city
- 5:33Speaker 1: of champions, man. Regardless of what comes out, a way,
- 5:37Speaker 1: we find a way to overcome those challenges and we win.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And that's what the Astros are demonstrated on a on
- 5:44Speaker 1: a national level is that, uh, this is a city
- 5:47Speaker 1: of champions. And that's amazing because I know emotionally when
- 5:51Speaker 1: that last out, when that seven Games, I was uplifted
- 5:55Speaker 1: and I just seen people were crying at the parade,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and I know you was there a lot five What
- 6:00Speaker 1: was the actual impact emotionally being in front of all
- 6:03Speaker 1: these people seeing hope and seeing a realization that they
- 6:06Speaker 1: are championed despite all this negativity. You know, it was
- 6:09Speaker 1: Shanon was simply incredible. Um, you know, we first played Boston,
- 6:14Speaker 1: came through that. Then we played the New York Yankees.
- 6:16Speaker 1: That was a seven game series, and we came through that,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and then in in in in in l A. That
- 6:23Speaker 1: turned into a seven game series. But I like to
- 6:26Speaker 1: reflect them that on that seventh game because there were
- 6:29Speaker 1: fifty one inches of rain that fell on the city
- 6:31Speaker 1: of Houston in that last game we won. The score
- 6:36Speaker 1: was five to five to one. So look, fifty one
- 6:39Speaker 1: inches of rain fell seventh game we won five to one.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I think it was just all in the cars, the
- 6:45Speaker 1: stars of line, and it was literally the Astros were
- 6:50Speaker 1: carrying the city, not just on their jerseys, but they
- 6:53Speaker 1: were carrying the cities and their in their hearts. And
- 6:56Speaker 1: so even though even with the team out there playing,
- 6:59Speaker 1: let me tell you it, you had two point three
- 7:01Speaker 1: million Houstonians that was out there out there playing right
- 7:04Speaker 1: along with them. Um. So I can't say thank you
- 7:07Speaker 1: enough to Jim Crane, the owner of the Astros, to
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Astros players, to the fans, to the people in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the city, and to people all over the country that
- 7:15Speaker 1: were rooting for the Astros. Normal were faced in the
- 7:18Speaker 1: city of the Hurricane Harvey. Now when you get here,
- 7:20Speaker 1: the national Lewis paints sometimes a worse picture than the
- 7:23Speaker 1: reality of what really goes down to the city because
- 7:26Speaker 1: they gotta tell their story. Talent tell their story. General,
- 7:29Speaker 1: what is the status of entrepreneurship in the city of
- 7:31Speaker 1: Houston right now? The affairs are quite quite good. For example,
- 7:35Speaker 1: if you are minority and woman, for example, the opportunities
- 7:39Speaker 1: are great here in the city. You know, no offense
- 7:42Speaker 1: to Atlanta, But what we say here in the City
- 7:45Speaker 1: of Houston when it comes to entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs, minority business
- 7:50Speaker 1: enterprises making it happen, We're the new Atlanta, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 1: right here in the city of Houston. Uh, there's no city.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Well the We're the most diverse city in the country
- 8:02Speaker 1: right now, the most diverse. Uh. You have businesses that
- 8:06Speaker 1: are that are opening up in the city, businesses that
- 8:09Speaker 1: are here that are expanding. Uh. There are opportunities on
- 8:14Speaker 1: every level, whether it's in professional contractors, uh, you name it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: In this city. Uh. This I tell people all the time,
- 8:23Speaker 1: this is the time to have your business and to
- 8:26Speaker 1: be in business in the city of Houston. You certainly
- 8:29Speaker 1: want to take advantage of this. At this moment. So
- 8:32Speaker 1: we are even after Hurricane Harvey, Man, we are open
- 8:36Speaker 1: for business and for people on a spc U campuses,
- 8:41Speaker 1: for graduates. This is the place to be. For people
- 8:44Speaker 1: who are looking to expand their business, this is the
- 8:47Speaker 1: place to come and expand your business. We're getting ready
- 8:51Speaker 1: to do a major interstate project. I fortified that we
- 8:55Speaker 1: configured like a seventh or eight billion dollar projects the
- 8:59Speaker 1: high speed train bullet train from Houston and Dallas. That's
- 9:03Speaker 1: that's like a fifteen billion dollar project that would probably
- 9:08Speaker 1: start in private sometime in twenty nineteen UM. In public
- 9:13Speaker 1: works work. I mean, it's a lot of opportunities for engineers,
- 9:17Speaker 1: for contractors um all of the work after after Harvey,
- 9:22Speaker 1: construction managers you know, and businesses on all different levels.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So this is a city of opportunity. If you're looking
- 9:30Speaker 1: at ben and entrepreneur expanding your business, there's no better
- 9:34Speaker 1: place to be than right here in the city of Houston. Mayor,
- 9:37Speaker 1: can I keep you for a couple of moments, I'm
- 9:39Speaker 1: gonna go to It's not like a break because you
- 9:42Speaker 1: it's three more important coutions. I want to ask about
- 9:44Speaker 1: the city understanding because I want to spread the word
- 9:46Speaker 1: because you know my love for Houston, and you got love.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And we won't tell everybody everything is good in the
- 9:50Speaker 1: city of Houston. Okay, we go back. We've been right
- 9:53Speaker 1: back with more of the mayor just sixty second city,
- 9:56Speaker 1: the fourth largest sixty second mayor and the fourth largest
- 9:58Speaker 1: city in this country, nearest the best turner. We'll be

- 11:17Speaker 1: that fish boat, just get bigger when you put it
- 11:20Speaker 1: in a punt. Ladies and gentlemen, please bucking the phone.
- 11:23Speaker 1: The one and only Charlie Wilson. So many people have
- 11:27Speaker 1: really been trying to give me to do a gospel
- 11:28Speaker 1: record for so many years, and I've been promising God
- 11:31Speaker 1: that I would I would shout him out to do something,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, and that was my baby. Come on, man,
- 11:39Speaker 1: put a little Jesus in your song. Come on, brother
- 11:42Speaker 1: ms Patty, a little Bill, and you know what I'm
- 11:44Speaker 1: gonna be doing concerts and little clubs. Thank you, Thank
- 11:48Speaker 1: you so that I can touch you when I'm sitting
- 11:51Speaker 1: with my hands. Thank you. See, I told you be
- 11:53Speaker 1: there every Monday, ten am the noon. Busy love and
- 11:56Speaker 1: naty money making conversations. You listen to money making conversation.
- 12:01Speaker 1: This is R. Sean McDonald back with the mayor, the
- 12:03Speaker 1: investor turner of Houston, Texas mayor. When we were talking
- 12:06Speaker 1: about entrepreneurship, and I love the way you was telling
- 12:08Speaker 1: everybody that, hey, we opened for business now. But we did.
- 12:12Speaker 1: It's it's an entrepreneurship. And then there's job opportunities. There's
- 12:15Speaker 1: there are two different tones of conversation there. So you
- 12:19Speaker 1: said that tween that door wide will come all down.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Here we in New Atlanta. How does it look for
- 12:24Speaker 1: job opportunities? Because because Houston was was delused with flood
- 12:29Speaker 1: waters and a lot of situations like the theater district
- 12:31Speaker 1: is finally starting to come back. How are we doing?
- 12:34Speaker 1: How are we doing? Well? Let me just tell you.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I mean, um, there was a lot of debris that
- 12:40Speaker 1: was underground, so we needed we needed contractors, small businesses.
- 12:44Speaker 1: They pick up that debris. We had a number of
- 12:47Speaker 1: contractors that we worked with. We had about four hundred
- 12:50Speaker 1: and fifty trucks and loaders on the streets every day,
- 12:53Speaker 1: seven days a week. We end up getting that done.
- 12:56Speaker 1: With all the projects that are in place, we are
- 13:00Speaker 1: we're going to need a very strong and robust labor force.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Um the high speed the Bullet train for example, Uh,
- 13:07Speaker 1: they will be hiring ten thousand people a year for
- 13:11Speaker 1: four years to build to build that train. You can't
- 13:14Speaker 1: do that without having the workforce. So we need that.
- 13:19Speaker 1: The our forty five project that's rebuilding Interstate forty five,
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know that project seven eight bigger dollars. You gotta
- 13:26Speaker 1: need a labor force in order to get that to
- 13:29Speaker 1: get that done. So we're needing that. There are thousands
- 13:32Speaker 1: of homes in this city, for example, that need to
- 13:35Speaker 1: be remediated, repaired, rebuilt, and we're looking for a labor
- 13:40Speaker 1: force for that right now. As a commender's need, we're
- 13:43Speaker 1: looking for we need plumbers and welders. There's a shortage
- 13:47Speaker 1: in the city of Houston, and those are good paying
- 13:50Speaker 1: jobs and we need that. So you know what, if
- 13:54Speaker 1: you if you're an entrepreneur, Golden opportunities for you in
- 13:58Speaker 1: the city. If you are someone UH individual looking for employment,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you know their opportunities for you as well. If you
- 14:06Speaker 1: come and you have certain skills like being a well
- 14:09Speaker 1: to being a compenter, being a plumber, any of things
- 14:12Speaker 1: of that nature. On the vocational skills, that's a tremendous
- 14:16Speaker 1: need for you on that front. And I'm gonna here
- 14:19Speaker 1: to attest that he's telling the truth. My nephew. He
- 14:22Speaker 1: is a is his UH trailer, roadside trailer barbacue tray.
- 14:26Speaker 1: The Big six Barbecue was damaged by hurricane, but the
- 14:29Speaker 1: spc A came to his rescue game Alan he has
- 14:32Speaker 1: a brand new trailer and he says he's turning away
- 14:35Speaker 1: customers right now because people are hungry and want to
- 14:38Speaker 1: eat some good food. So I know what you're saying
- 14:40Speaker 1: is the truth, because I see that the city is
- 14:43Speaker 1: aiding people and putting them in a better position to
- 14:45Speaker 1: win sometimes then when they were before the flood. So
- 14:48Speaker 1: there's there's a strong upward movement about when you start
- 14:51Speaker 1: talking about the post Houston Harvey recovery is powerful right now, correct, Mayor,
- 14:56Speaker 1: And that's correct. And then what I said when I
- 14:58Speaker 1: became there and JA six I'm not interested in being
- 15:02Speaker 1: the mayor of two cities or cities of have and
- 15:04Speaker 1: have not a city where there are some with opportunities
- 15:08Speaker 1: in a city where there are some without. And so
- 15:11Speaker 1: the focus for me and been on building complete communities,
- 15:14Speaker 1: going into communities and neighborhoods that have been undeserved and
- 15:17Speaker 1: under resource for decades. Light fift Wool at the Nickels
- 15:22Speaker 1: Light Acres, home to FOFO, and building those communities up
- 15:26Speaker 1: and turning them into communities of opportunity. And in order
- 15:31Speaker 1: for that to happen, you have to have housing, you
- 15:33Speaker 1: have to have parks in green space, you have to
- 15:35Speaker 1: have economic business, job opportunities, and those business and job
- 15:39Speaker 1: opportunities need to be in these communities that have been
- 15:44Speaker 1: undeserved under resource, so that people can get to these opportunities.
- 15:49Speaker 1: All we can create opportunities entrepreneurs in these communities that
- 15:54Speaker 1: can hire people in these communities. So this is the moment,
- 15:58Speaker 1: This is our seas and Harvey in it. As as
- 16:02Speaker 1: bad as I hated for Harvey to come, there are
- 16:05Speaker 1: a whole lot of opportunities that are coming forth because
- 16:09Speaker 1: of Harvard. And so we need to leverage that disaster
- 16:13Speaker 1: into a time of opportunity for this city and for
- 16:17Speaker 1: people in this city. And that's the goal and that's
- 16:20Speaker 1: what we intend to do. I got two more questions.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I want to brag a little bit more. Bragged about
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Eastern Nastros. Now I want to brag about the
- 16:27Speaker 1: Houston Livestock Show Road. Come on, before you get started.
- 16:33Speaker 1: The diversity of their livestock shot rodeo when includes African America,
- 16:37Speaker 1: the Latino community, it is really a shining star in
- 16:42Speaker 1: the Houston community livestock showing rodeo. Absolutely, it's three weeks
- 16:46Speaker 1: of of uh, everyday activity. It is the equivalent of
- 16:50Speaker 1: bringing a Super Bowl to the city of uson every
- 16:52Speaker 1: day for three weeks. It's true, that's true. That's true.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I mean the their thirty three thousand volunteers for this road. Yeah, okay, Uh,
- 17:01Speaker 1: it attracts millions of folks for these three weeks. Um,
- 17:05Speaker 1: there's the Hunter Knight as uh a black Knight. Um.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Let's let me tell you this city. I tell people
- 17:16Speaker 1: we're a little bit of country and a little bit
- 17:18Speaker 1: chic all at the same time. So you got you
- 17:20Speaker 1: got a guy who graduated from Harvard who's put you hell.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I put on my cowboy head and get them and
- 17:27Speaker 1: get on my horse. And uh, there are people who
- 17:30Speaker 1: have come from from who come from the from from
- 17:33Speaker 1: north of the United States, have come south and who
- 17:36Speaker 1: have never had on a pair of cowboy boots, who
- 17:40Speaker 1: are hat and they trade their suit san and then
- 17:43Speaker 1: next thing you know, they're out there as part of
- 17:45Speaker 1: the rodeo parade. That's that's held every single year part
- 17:49Speaker 1: of the trail Ride. But it's a fantastic time. It
- 17:53Speaker 1: reflects the diversity about the city. And look, we've had
- 17:56Speaker 1: black cowboys in this country a long time. Uh, this
- 17:59Speaker 1: is the time. But also celebrate and highlight them as well.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I wanted to show everybody what he was saying. When
- 18:04Speaker 1: you're saying there's like a super Bowl every night. The
- 18:06Speaker 1: average attendance, because it was in the Houston Chronicle today,
- 18:10Speaker 1: the average and it was sixty thou people at night
- 18:12Speaker 1: at the concerts. Yes, that's sixty a night for three weeks.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And it's growing. It literally is growing. Man, there are
- 18:22Speaker 1: as many as seventy five thousand, you know, but that's
- 18:26Speaker 1: the average. And and and it's all day. There are
- 18:30Speaker 1: things to do all during the day. And then on
- 18:33Speaker 1: top of that, they award hundreds of scholarships, their scholarships.
- 18:38Speaker 1: They get scholarships up to twenty thousand dollars to two kids.
- 18:44Speaker 1: The Black Trail Riders. We've got to get it out there,
- 18:46Speaker 1: the Black Trail. It's just an amazing diverge that I
- 18:50Speaker 1: as a kid, I've always and you want to get
- 18:52Speaker 1: some fried food now you know, Twinkies frying everything there.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So it looks it's worth coming to the city, Jerry,
- 19:05Speaker 1: to participating, to be a part of it. I want
- 19:07Speaker 1: to ask you the last question. Now you said you
- 19:10Speaker 1: this has been almost like a mandate with you that
- 19:13Speaker 1: the televison, the growth of the television and film industry,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and where do we stand with that? How do we
- 19:21Speaker 1: because I know and that in Georgia they got that
- 19:23Speaker 1: big you know discount tax discount. Did you know it's
- 19:26Speaker 1: part of your budget? How do you I noticed, I
- 19:29Speaker 1: know that's something you wanted to participate in the program,
- 19:32Speaker 1: a big event that they had in January last year,
- 19:36Speaker 1: last year. And where are we stand with the mayor? Well,
- 19:39Speaker 1: we're pushing that forward. We know that in order to
- 19:42Speaker 1: be competitive, we have to look at find ways to
- 19:44Speaker 1: provide incentives to encourage people to come and produce their
- 19:48Speaker 1: films and have entertainment here in the city of Houston.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I applaud Atlanta, for example, with what they're doing. Um,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you know the Atlanta l A all these other areas
- 19:59Speaker 1: UM and centers are very very important. What we are saying,
- 20:02Speaker 1: we brought in a number of producers and executives a
- 20:05Speaker 1: year ago to the city to come and see the city.
- 20:09Speaker 1: A lot of people outside of the city of Houston, machean,
- 20:11Speaker 1: they just they don't They have a false picture of
- 20:16Speaker 1: the city of Houston. And when people come and see
- 20:19Speaker 1: this city and what exists in this city, they are
- 20:22Speaker 1: totally blown away. When we brought those executives and producers
- 20:25Speaker 1: of moving them ministry here, they were blown away. And
- 20:30Speaker 1: what I am saying, we will look for ways to
- 20:32Speaker 1: provide incentives. We've got a number of venues here. Um.
- 20:37Speaker 1: We want to we we create the talent, but then
- 20:40Speaker 1: we lose the talent to other cities because of films
- 20:43Speaker 1: and other things are being produced elsewhere. But we want
- 20:46Speaker 1: that to happen here. Um. And so what I'm saying
- 20:49Speaker 1: to executives, producers and others, look at the city of Houston,
- 20:53Speaker 1: give me an opportunity to work with you, shoot your
- 20:57Speaker 1: firms here and we will do everything we can to
- 21:00Speaker 1: make it uh uh cost prudent for you to do that,
- 21:05Speaker 1: But there's no a better city than to uh to
- 21:08Speaker 1: produce these fans and these movies, and right here in
- 21:10Speaker 1: the city. Mayor, you did everything I wanted you to
- 21:13Speaker 1: do on my show. Tell the world about the greatness
- 21:16Speaker 1: of Houston. We do a movies down there, We've got
- 21:18Speaker 1: jobs down there is an entrepreneurship paradise and we world champions.
