- 0:14Sun, Salt, and Light, S-O-N, knowing and growing in your daily relationship with Jesus Christ,
- 0:21but also be in the salt and the light in your marriage, in your family,
- 0:26at your place of work, at your church, and even in the community you're in.
- 0:31I'm Pastor Michael Petit. This is a radio ministry of our church,
- 0:35Calvary Chapel Divine, Divine here in Divine, Texas.
- 0:38We are so glad that you joined us for today's broadcast.
- 0:41We are a Calvary Chapel, so we simply teach the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter.
- 0:47We believe that God uses His Word to transform, restore, and to change lives one verse at a time.
- 0:53If you're visiting our area, you'd like to get information about our church
- 0:57or church service times, maybe even track down some of the other teachings that
- 1:02we have available through podcasts, whether it's through Audible or Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
- 1:08You can do all of that at our church website at calvarydivine.org.
- 1:12That's calvarydivine.org.
- 1:14Hey, this is Pastor Michael Petit.
- 1:17Question for you. How do you disciple somebody with emotional health coming into the church?
- 1:24Imagine this. Imagine having a family of five kids, a husband and wife with
- 1:30a broken marriage. marriage.
- 1:32Two of the kids have tried to commit suicide. One has been actually placed into,
- 1:39Laurel Ridge, which is a place for mental health.
- 1:42And here we come into the church.
- 1:45This was my family. How do you disciple them?
- 1:50And that's not including the stuff I was dealing with. I had no clue what it
- 1:55was to be a father, no clue what it was to be a husband.
- 1:59And I was struggling with my own emotional health, which was through post-traumatic
- 2:04stress disorder, from being in combat.
- 2:06And here we are, and we need discipleship.
- 2:11What do you do as a church?
- 2:13Well, that's what this study is. We were able to, I had the blessing of being
- 2:18able to go to the Equip Conference here in Divine, Texas, and teach.
- 2:23I had two sessions and this will actually be broken up probably into four teachings
- 2:28because they gave us two full hour sessions.
- 2:32And so you'll hear some of my testimony in this.
- 2:35You'll hear some of the things that our church did as I came and our family came into the church.
- 2:40Some of the things that were suggested to us to do, which was biblical counseling for our marriage.
- 2:46And so it's, I hope this helps you.
- 2:49If you have your Bible, we'll be actually in Psalm 23, and then we'll also be in Joshua chapter 1.
- 2:55And so we'll go through this bit by bit, piece by piece through the scripture as well.
- 3:00So this is a teaching, just FYI. We will go verse by verse through the book
- 3:05of Joshua chapter 1 verses 1.
- 3:08I think it's chapter 1 verses 1 through 9, if I remember right.
- 3:11But I hope that you enjoy this. So, the beginning of it, again,
- 3:16is me sharing a little bit about my testimony,
- 3:18our family's testimony, and as we're coming into the church,
- 3:22and just the reality of what people are dealing with,
- 3:26not only in the church, but also as they become new believers and come into
- 3:32the church, and how does a church disciple within that.
- 3:37And so, that's what these teachings are. I hope that you enjoy them.
- 3:40This is Session 2, Part 1. So, we left off in Joshua, as Joshua has found out
- 3:47that he has Moses dying and he's got a lead.
- 3:53And so, he's going to lead this wonderful group of people into the promised land.
- 4:00And one of the things that we know is that,
- 4:04the Lord is not going to make a call without enabling him.
- 4:09And that's the same thing for your life is to understand like when God has used
- 4:13you to come alongside a family or an individual, you need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:21You need to be connected to the word of God and God will, everything that you
- 4:26need to do, God will provide.
- 4:28If he's told you to do that, to walk along, whatever ministry that you're in,
- 4:32that's really, you know, At the end of the day, that's really where discipleship
- 4:36begins is in these ministries.
- 4:38And it's important. So if you're leading children's ministry or you're in youth
- 4:42ministry or whichever ministry you're in,
- 4:46those people that are serving with you, those are the people that you are connected
- 4:50to and should be discipling as well as the families that are bringing in kids,
- 4:54that are bringing in youth, that are here on Sunday.
- 4:58It's important for you to say hello to somebody.
- 5:01You go, I don't know that person. go up and say hey i'm probably edging here
- 5:06man god bless you for coming what's your name just,
- 5:10you make that connection that's half the battle with people there's no connections
- 5:15and so we have to part of our discipleship is understanding that god's going
- 5:20to call you to do something,
- 5:22he's going to equip you he's going to equip you so he tells him i will be with
- 5:28you i will not leave you or forsake you.
- 5:31John 14, 26 says, but the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
- 5:36in my name, he will teach you all things and bring into remembrance all that I have said to you.
- 5:41So I do not want to hear you tell me, I don't know what to do.
- 5:46The Holy Spirit is going to teach you and help you. I don't know what to say.
- 5:52The Holy Spirit will give you what to say.
- 5:55That's the purpose of storing the word of God on your heart is so when it's
- 5:59time for it to come out it's the Holy Spirit that.
- 6:04Or gives you that thing to say that you know that, I don't know where that came
- 6:07from, the Holy Spirit gave it to you.
- 6:10Remember that. John 14, 18, I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.
- 6:16So we still have these promises, even though we're in the Old Testament,
- 6:21we still have the promise of Jesus Christ that he is with us.
- 6:24He's every person that has given their heart to Christ that is retentive,
- 6:29the Holy Spirit's been placed inside of you.
- 6:32You have the holy spirit invited you
- 6:35now i i've heard my pastor say it
- 6:38many times like you're gonna be meeting people in heaven and they're gonna first
- 6:43thing they're gonna know you're gonna be like hey well what did you do they're
- 6:46gonna be like no you had the same power that resurrected jesus christ and what
- 6:53did you do with it what are you doing with it,
- 6:57are you just going to church on sunday and that's
- 7:00it are you living for christ
- 7:03every day for those moments in heb
- 7:06for those moments in walmart for those moments where
- 7:09you're at the qt and it's a divine appointment and it may just be for you to
- 7:16encourage that person for that moment that may be all it is it may be for you
- 7:21to see something and go can i pray for you I have prayed for people in H-E-B.
- 7:27I have been flipped off in H-E-B when I asked to pray for somebody.
- 7:32I had a couple, they were fighting. I thought he was going to die. So I followed him in.
- 7:38And I'm like them, I'm praying, praying, praying. And it's getting worse.
- 7:42They're going through the vegetable aisle. And I'm like, somebody's going to
- 7:45throw an orange or something. It's going to happen.
- 7:48And this guy is going to lose it. And I said, can I pray for you?
- 7:51And she goes, no, man. And she turned around and flipped me off.
- 7:55And then she told her husband, her boyfriend, whatever he was.
- 7:58And then throughout the rest of the interview, they just yelled at me.
- 8:02And I was like, well, at least I'm trying to see each other.
- 8:09I'm praying for them. I'm like, Borg, you know what's going on. I don't know. But you do.
- 8:15Let them come to faith. Like, is that your intent when you step out of your house?
- 8:21Can I tell you, some of you, and this is something you need to encourage your
- 8:25husbands and fathers and moms and wives, it's like discipleship begins in your home.
- 8:35If you can't do it there, it will never make it into the church.
- 8:42If your marriage is a mess, you need to deal with that first.
- 8:46If your kids need more attention, you need to take a step back and focus on them and do that.
- 8:53The church is not going to fall down.
- 8:56You're not that important to me, and neither am I.
- 8:59I can not be there tomorrow, and somebody will be there to teach.
- 9:03I can get hit walking out of here.
- 9:05If one of y'all might run me over. But I can get hit walking out of here,
- 9:09and there'll be somebody there to teach.
- 9:12We think we're important, right?
- 9:17Joshua here, he's finding out that the Lord is not going to leave him or forsake him.
- 9:21We need to remember that that as we
- 9:24read that he tells them to be strong and courageous for you
- 9:27shall cause this people to inherit the land that i
- 9:30swore to their fathers to give them so the first thing he tells them is to be
- 9:35strong and courageous don't fear why joshua's seen what's on the other side
- 9:41that's what we forget he knows what's there he knows the fortified cities he
- 9:46He knows what they're fixing to come up against.
- 9:49And God's like, be courageous. Be strong.
- 9:53What was that? Joseph Walt was strong. Amen. Amen. And he was discipled by Moses.
- 9:59And you go, but there was no discipleship back then. It was.
- 10:04It was. It was there then.
- 10:06And so we see, he tells them, be strong and courageous, for you shall cause
- 10:11this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
- 10:14He's telling them like look there's already victory there's already victory
- 10:19too many Christians are not living in victory you're playing victim.
- 10:25You step out in victory. You step out in victory.
- 10:30And one of the things that I love is he's given him the promise.
- 10:35He tells him in Genesis 28, verse 15 through 16, it says, Behold,
- 10:40I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go, and I will bring you back
- 10:44to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.
- 10:49Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.
- 10:56This is the moment for Jacob when he realizes God's promise for himself.
- 11:03It's sad because this is where a lot of our kids and our youth are at and our
- 11:09young adults is they come to church because you came to church because that's what we always did.
- 11:17But there has to be a moment just like Jacob where it becomes yours.
- 11:23It's not mom and dads it's not theo and theas that's
- 11:27their faith i go to church because they went
- 11:29to church it's it's understanding that at
- 11:32that moment that promise is real and and for
- 11:35us understanding is that we are to trust the lord with all of our heart and
- 11:40do not lean on your own understanding and all your ways acknowledge him and
- 11:44he will make straight your paths do you understand i did not know anything about
- 11:48the word of god the first bible i ever picked up was the King James Bible. Lord help me.
- 11:54I had an Alabama education, high school.
- 11:57Alabama's not, they're doing better because California is making a mess,
- 12:03but Alabama moving up the chart.
- 12:06And education, but I could understand this verse.
- 12:10I knew what it was to lean on my own understanding. I knew the mess that it made.
- 12:15So the first thing I started doing is I go, okay, wait a minute,
- 12:18Lord, what do you want me to do?
- 12:20Not what Mike wants to do. What do you want me to do in that situation?
- 12:24Sometimes when somebody comes into your life, they don't understand the Bible.
- 12:28You cannot not throw out christianese to them okay you
- 12:33gotta break it down you gotta simplify and what
- 12:36i need by that is you're still you're still you know the theology you know who
- 12:42god is you know that his attributes is he's just he's holy he's grace he's love
- 12:47he's mercy you know all those things but you're getting them to where they're
- 12:51still starting to have an understanding you help them and build their foundation.
- 12:55And part of that, the first thing is you need to start trusting God and stop
- 12:59leaning on your own understanding.
- 13:01And he tells them in verse six, be strong and courageous for you shall cause
- 13:05the people to inherit the land that I swore their fathers.
- 13:09And, and, you know, as he continues to tell them, be strong and courageous.
- 13:14One of the things that we need to realize is that our, our strength and our
- 13:18courage come from being obedient to God.
- 13:22That's where you, That's where your foundation needs to begin, is an obedience to God.
- 13:28When you have somebody who is telling Joshua over and over, be strong and courageous,
- 13:35it's because Joshua is fearful.
- 13:37And what comes with fear? Anxiety. Anxiety can cause depression.
- 13:43All kinds of stuff can happen from fear. When we don't have the reverence and
- 13:48the fear of God, we're in big trouble.
- 13:51Trouble, but one of the things that we do need to understand,
- 13:54and I was telling our church this this past week, that was actually,
- 13:57we spent three weeks going through chapter 3 of 1 Thessalonians,
- 14:01because I love that book.
- 14:03It's sharing the gospel, it's discipleship, it's afflictions,
- 14:08and it's prayers, and that's what Paul was like, hey, in 1 Thessalonians chapter 3, verses 3 through 5,
- 14:15and y'all need to catch this, because y'all need to know this,
- 14:17so when you have that that person in front of you that's discipled,
- 14:21that you're discipling, and they start going through afflictions because they're
- 14:24going to go through them and you're going to go through them.
- 14:27Paul says that no one be moved by these afflictions for you yourself know that
- 14:32we are destined for this, destined for this.
- 14:35For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand we were to suffer
- 14:40afflictions just as it's to come to pass.
- 14:44And just as you know, for this reason, when I could bear it no longer,
- 14:47I sent to learn about your faith for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted
- 14:53you and our labor would be in vain.
- 14:57So Paul tells the early church in Bethlehem, you're appointed for afflictions.
- 15:04Now, anybody over the age of 60 goes, I got that. I understand that one every day.
- 15:10So because you have that experience and you've been through it, you know what death is.
- 15:16You know what it's like to have a child overdose or lose a family member unexpectedly.
- 15:24You should be able to walk with that family. We're kidding ourselves if we don't
- 15:28let the church know, hey, we're going to go through afflictions.
- 15:32We're going to. I told the church, hey, 2024 looks like it's going to be afflictions.
- 15:38And if the church is not prepared for it, you need to wake up.
- 15:43Good thing about it. So you have to throw a jeans. Yes, very much so.
- 15:48But it says the reason why he's worried about them is because the tempter had
- 15:53tempted you. He's worried about Satan.
- 15:56Because what happens when somebody is new in your church, right?
- 16:01They're new in your church. they come in new to your church and
- 16:04they're going through afflictions what happens
- 16:07when people are going through afflictions they come to church right they
- 16:11show up the church you need to understand that satan is trying to pull them
- 16:16back the tempter is trying to tempt him as well and and and so we we have to
- 16:22be willing to talk about that what what do we have when we have afflictions
- 16:27well one of of the things that afflictions do.
- 16:30It actually proves whether or not your faith is real.
- 16:33Are you opposed, as the kids would say?
- 16:36A fight or is it real when somebody's
- 16:39hit with afflictions you find out when we lost tony this past year in september
- 16:45i was on my way to the doc because i was sick coming back from the doc i get
- 16:51the phone call from from his wife and she's like can you pray tony's on his way to the hospital,
- 16:59it's like yes let me pray for you and and i pray for over the phone 15 minutes
- 17:05later i get the next phone call is from the daughter and I hear crying in the background.
- 17:09We need you right now. All right. What hospital are you at? Show up at the Baptist hospital downtown.
- 17:15I get into the emergency room and nobody's there.
- 17:20So I'm thinking maybe they had to crack Tony's chest open because he was having
- 17:24a little blood pressure stuff that was already there.
- 17:27Chaplain comes up and I know I watch his wife as everybody wailed in that room.
- 17:35You know how David encourages himself?
- 17:38I watched that woman on her knees quoting scripture after scripture after scripture.
- 17:45And I was blown away.
- 17:47She was, God was walking her through that in that moment.
- 17:51And we, chaplain looks at me and I'm like, I was blown away. way.
- 17:57And so her faith, oh, it got proved that day.
- 18:01Now, she was in a great deal of pain through that affliction,
- 18:04but man, her faith stood out. It stood out to that chaplain and to me.
- 18:09It also helps you to encourage and comfort others.
- 18:12The affliction that you go through, God is saying, I'm going to use that specifically.
- 18:18You may have gone through something very specific, and God brings that that
- 18:23person into your life so you can disciple
- 18:25them and help them through that affliction. God has given you that.
- 18:30The beauty of that is like, yeah, it was painful.
- 18:33It was, man, I can't even remember going through that. But you have somebody
- 18:36in front of you that's going through the exact same thing.
- 18:40Of Christ, the Holy Spirit that pairs you together.
- 18:43And you're there to disciple them and help them through that affliction.
- 18:47Because you can encourage them.
- 18:49I've been through that. I know what that's like. You can walk with them.
- 18:53You know, afflictions also make us very passionate about spreading the gospel.
- 18:57You ever seen somebody who almost died? They're telling everybody about Jesus.
- 19:02Right? They're telling everybody about Jesus.
- 19:06Anybody they come to. Nurse comes in the room, I'm talking about Jesus.
- 19:09Like they there's a there's a
- 19:11fire that's been lit back up again and then
- 19:15it also makes us re-look at the things that are important in
- 19:18our life and things that need to go you go through an affliction and some friends
- 19:23got to go you go through an affliction and my my kids are priority my job is
- 19:30not we we start looking at things differently God allows us to do that but let me tell you something.
- 19:37When you're discipling somebody, affliction is part of the fallen world,
- 19:41and you need to be able to explain that to them.
- 19:44Sin entered this world. This world was perfect.
- 19:49Illness wars death but
- 19:53christ defeated all of that and afflictions can also be a direct attack from
- 19:58satan because he comes to steal kill and destroy one of the biggest things that
- 20:04you need to do when somebody's going through afflictions and it is in colossians chapter 3 verses 1 and 2,
- 20:10this was the second verse i was able to understand as a christian this was the
- 20:15second one i learned and I held on to was Colossians 3, verses 1 and 2.
- 20:20If any of you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above where
- 20:24Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
- 20:27Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.
- 20:33To be strong and courageous, as Joshua was being asked to do,
- 20:37the first thing that has to happen is because we need to look up.
- 20:40So when somebody comes into your life and you go, man, I don't know how.
- 20:45I don't know what's going to happen, how to fix this, but let's go to God.
- 20:50Because I believe in everything that we do as followers of Christ.
- 20:55God will put doctors in place. God will put nurses.
- 20:58God will put specific counseling in place. God will do whatever God needs to
- 21:03do for that person, but you need to go to him first.
- 21:06And what a great, great disciple you will be by teaching them to go to God first.
- 21:12Not to the world we look to the world too much you are supposed to have a biblical
- 21:19worldview so for you when you when you look at this world it should be through the lens of this.
- 21:26Right through the bible yes god can bring medicine god can put doctors in place
- 21:34i'm a direct example of that i'm not even supposed to be walking i don't have
- 21:39i if i go down on the the ground,
- 21:41I have to have help coming up. I don't have the muscles in my legs there.
- 21:45I have medicine that I have to take in the afternoon. During lunchtime, that's where I went.
- 21:52Because if not, I can't walk the rest of the day. I don't care. One way, man.
- 21:57Let's get it. At the end of the day, God's provided it. Thank you. Right?
- 22:02Look up. I'm like, hey, doctors figured it
- 22:05out in 2009 I wasn't walking
- 22:09I wasn't functioning they thought I had cancer
- 22:11of the nerves God didn't
