- 3:17Speaker 1: twenty on Netflix. It starts Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer,
- 3:21Speaker 1: Blair Underwood, Tiffany Hattris. Please welcome to Money Making conversation
- 3:25Speaker 1: the other star of self made the Madame C. J.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Walker Story, Bill Bellamy, thank you for having me retired. Man.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You know, it's funny, you know, when you're working hard,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you forget I'll even getting how much stuff I've done.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I just keep grinding, Bill and shorten it. I had
- 3:43Speaker 1: to shorten it, okay, because we all know I'm being honest. Man.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It's just like, you know, it's just just hearing you
- 3:50Speaker 1: say that that, you know, the things that I've done,
- 3:53Speaker 1: It just makes me realize that, you know, all the
- 3:55Speaker 1: hard work is not in vain, and that the passion
- 3:58Speaker 1: for the for the craft acting in comedy has been
- 4:02Speaker 1: my you know, sort of my engine to my longevity
- 4:06Speaker 1: because I just love doing it. Like you know, it's
- 4:09Speaker 1: not like work to me, to to to be in
- 4:11Speaker 1: projects and be funny and stuff like that. And I
- 4:15Speaker 1: guess you know, it's been a secret recipe to you know,
- 4:19Speaker 1: me being a success, you know, in a part of
- 4:21Speaker 1: my blueprint in the entertainment business. You know, really special
- 4:24Speaker 1: because we see now so many comics and so many
- 4:28Speaker 1: comedic actors are not crossing over. The big game show
- 4:30Speaker 1: holls Or led by Steve Harvey, Athnasa Michael straight here.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But let's go back here. Let's go back Death Comedy
- 4:36Speaker 1: Jam when it popped off and then you crossed over
- 4:39Speaker 1: the MTV. I'm talking about every comic in America was
- 4:42Speaker 1: looking at you, going, how do you doing that? Yeah?
- 4:48Speaker 1: How did he do that? Like? How did he just
- 4:52Speaker 1: jump the lane? You know something? Just you went from
- 4:55Speaker 1: you went from Booty Call to mtvn't Yeah, it was
- 5:00Speaker 1: articulate and it was natural. Talk about that journey right there,
- 5:03Speaker 1: because we take for granted because when we see OTV
- 5:06Speaker 1: nowadays and we're going back to you know, Nanty too,
- 5:09Speaker 1: when Death Jail popped off and the tours and everything
- 5:11Speaker 1: and the CEO brand Man cross over, it looked so
- 5:14Speaker 1: comfortable because MTV was definitely, you know, a white music channel,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying as a BT, and I
- 5:20Speaker 1: was one of very few African Americans that had a
- 5:25Speaker 1: place in that platform, you know, and and it was
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, and they took a chance. You know. Honestly,
- 5:32Speaker 1: Tracy Jordan, who was at that time, she was head
- 5:36Speaker 1: of Talent Relations, she thought I was really funny guy,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and she was just like, you know, we need some hearing,
- 5:42Speaker 1: We need some you know, some cool to uh come
- 5:45Speaker 1: to MTV, and I was like, right, I was in
- 5:48Speaker 1: the right place at the right time, and and what
- 5:50Speaker 1: what what made it, what made it work for me
- 5:53Speaker 1: was because I was a part of the culture. So
- 5:56Speaker 1: just imagine, right, Deaf Comedy Jam was the hippest, newest,
- 6:01Speaker 1: coolest urban thing that they hit the streets right and
- 6:07Speaker 1: so so everybody was tuning in every Friday night. Everybody
- 6:12Speaker 1: was talking about it because we had never seen nothing
- 6:14Speaker 1: like this before, where you can watch TV for a
- 6:16Speaker 1: half hour and you know you're gonna laugh every minute
- 6:20Speaker 1: of that half hour. You was going to be on
- 6:22Speaker 1: the floor, lasting rights, running around, running around, running around,
- 6:27Speaker 1: You're trying to record it on via test, you know.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So I was a part of that explosion. And what
- 6:34Speaker 1: people don't realize another lucky thing that happened for me
- 6:38Speaker 1: was I was the first comedian on the very first
- 6:41Speaker 1: show of Death Comedy Dead, So I literally got all
- 6:45Speaker 1: that exposure, like oh my god, and they re aired
- 6:49Speaker 1: at night, so I got buzzed in, you know, on
- 6:53Speaker 1: the black hip hop stuff, and then turn around and
- 6:56Speaker 1: got the most pop mainstream job knowing the man. So
- 7:03Speaker 1: so my name exploded. It was like I came out
- 7:06Speaker 1: of a cannon. It was like, Yo, this this dude
- 7:09Speaker 1: named Bill Bellamy. Because when I did uh def Comedy Jam,
- 7:13Speaker 1: people didn't really know my name. I knew my jokes.
- 7:17Speaker 1: It was like, Yo, you do the booty cool, you
- 7:18Speaker 1: do the car. They used to they used to call me,
- 7:22Speaker 1: uh you you Ralph felling me right. So so um
- 7:29Speaker 1: that MTV was a blessing because I got a chance
- 7:34Speaker 1: to get exposed to everyone in America. And it wasn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: just black folks, it was everybody. So I ended up
- 7:39Speaker 1: getting the benefit of that exposure, and I knew I
- 7:43Speaker 1: had a purpose day. I wanted to represent us in
- 7:45Speaker 1: the right way. I didn't want to be no. I
- 7:48Speaker 1: didn't want to be no cornball dude on their looking
- 7:50Speaker 1: like you know, I wasn't a representative of our culture.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So it was very it was very purposeful for me
- 7:57Speaker 1: to go on there and take advantage of that situation
- 8:00Speaker 1: and end up being the best choice because you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I started getting all the good interviews. You know, I
- 8:06Speaker 1: was you know Janey Jackson, you know Mariah and Snoop
- 8:11Speaker 1: and Dre and Tuprock and Biggie. I was getting all
- 8:15Speaker 1: the everybody that was hot in the culture came to me.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You know, it really was. That was that was unique
- 8:24Speaker 1: time for you as a talent man. You know. But
- 8:26Speaker 1: you know the thing I loved about it is that
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, that's why I mentioned your your college education,
- 8:31Speaker 1: because you came from the corporate world. Yeah I was.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I went to Rutgers, right and and this was the thing.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I didn't know I was going to get into acting
- 8:40Speaker 1: and entertainment like that. You know, I always had a
- 8:43Speaker 1: love for it. I went to school UM for economics
- 8:47Speaker 1: and marketing, my market my minor was marketing. My major
- 8:52Speaker 1: was economic so I was more or less thinking about
- 8:55Speaker 1: financing entrepreneurship in that way. And get to get this,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I did comedy, like as a joke, you know. You
- 9:06Speaker 1: in college it's like, man, we need a host. I
- 9:08Speaker 1: was like, I most that thing. I could be funny.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And then and then the dude say, yeah, we'll come on.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I was say, huh, oh, you you're serious. You want
- 9:15Speaker 1: me to do it for real? So right, right right,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I brought the host. And you know, you know how
- 9:20Speaker 1: in college they got the little tips, the little fun
- 9:22Speaker 1: all the talent shows and stuff like that, and you know,
- 9:25Speaker 1: we all we all been there, and uh, I was
- 9:27Speaker 1: still going to school, doing my thing, getting ready, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: for my what I thought would be my corporate lifestyle.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And once I started doing that comedy thing, it's like
- 9:38Speaker 1: a it's contagious. Like I was like, oh my god,
- 9:42Speaker 1: this is way more fun than anything I can imagine
- 9:45Speaker 1: it just I just remember it made me happy. But
- 9:48Speaker 1: always you was doing a comedy in New York and
- 9:53Speaker 1: one of the toughest comedy clubs, yes, sir, in the
- 9:56Speaker 1: country people because everybody look at he smooth hairstyle, articulate,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but you was doing stand up comedy and one of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the teams to understand it, right, it was so funny.
- 10:11Speaker 1: You've been knowing me alone because everybody My biggest thing
- 10:16Speaker 1: was I didn't look like a comedian. That's what everybody
- 10:19Speaker 1: kept saying, you know, callow me a pretty boy, ain't
- 10:22Speaker 1: as to any other. And I'm like, man, I'm trying
- 10:24Speaker 1: to be funny to get all the looks. I don't care,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but you can't control what you look like. I know
- 10:27Speaker 1: I'm funny, right, But the thing about it was the
- 10:31Speaker 1: best thing was it made me become a real comedian
- 10:35Speaker 1: because people underestimated me. So I had to prove something.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I had something to prove. I had a chip on
- 10:41Speaker 1: my shoulder, and I had the best workout club in
- 10:44Speaker 1: the country, which was the complement. Everybody. Everybody did my
- 10:49Speaker 1: club from I name anybody from Steve Harveater said to
- 10:54Speaker 1: to to Chris Rock, Dave's Pell, Tracy Morgan, everybody jab smooth.
- 11:02Speaker 1: They all had to do my club and uh but
- 11:05Speaker 1: that But that audience though, Bill, those that audience wasn't
- 11:09Speaker 1: the regular audience. Though. Oh yeah, they was damn there.
- 11:12Speaker 1: They was damn there from the from the Apollo. They
- 11:14Speaker 1: was like recruited at the Apollo. A came to my club,
- 11:17Speaker 1: the mooo people. It was ridiculous. That's why I love
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's why, that's why I love about my show. I
- 11:24Speaker 1: get to you know, because everybody see you now. But
- 11:27Speaker 1: the journey is what I love to tell people about.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You know, that history and and your history making talent
- 11:32Speaker 1: because that suit look that you carried, you know, brought on,
- 11:35Speaker 1: that was your brand and that brand has has allowed
- 11:39Speaker 1: you to be a host on Access, be a host
- 11:42Speaker 1: with Rachel Ray, to be a host you you know,
- 11:44Speaker 1: your your ability to look professional, look like a corporate guy,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and then you could swing and be just a regular
- 11:50Speaker 1: street guy. That was a nice balance for your brand,
- 11:53Speaker 1: correct And that was yes, And that was actually on
- 11:57Speaker 1: purpose because that corporate We taught me that when you
- 12:01Speaker 1: are successful, you have to look like the success you're
- 12:05Speaker 1: presenting and you have to feel authentic. And most brands,
- 12:10Speaker 1: this is where my college came in to help me
- 12:13Speaker 1: create my own brand and my in my career is
- 12:15Speaker 1: that most brands that are successful are relatable. They are reliable,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and they are consistent and you have to have that.
- 12:25Speaker 1: So it was important that I look a certain way.
- 12:28Speaker 1: It was important that every time you saw me, I
- 12:30Speaker 1: was really really funny and I had to have the
- 12:34Speaker 1: same I had to show up and show out every
- 12:36Speaker 1: time the same way. Like I had to always keep
- 12:38Speaker 1: bringing it, bringing it, bringing it. But what ended up
- 12:40Speaker 1: happening people started relating to it and started expecting that.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So they was like, oh, yeah, that's to do that
- 12:46Speaker 1: way the suit or that's to do that. You know.
- 12:50Speaker 1: They had something they thought about me, you know what
- 12:52Speaker 1: I mean, and that and that ended up being a
- 12:55Speaker 1: really great thing, you know, and people don't realize and
- 13:00Speaker 1: we didn't talk about it in the early names, but
- 13:03Speaker 1: we were brands. You know, def Comedy Jam was a
- 13:06Speaker 1: brand that helped us be branded the best comedies comics
- 13:11Speaker 1: in the country. Because literally, Deaf Comedy Jam stamped you
- 13:15Speaker 1: as one of the best comics in the country. You know,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it was really beautiful, man, just you know, because I
- 13:21Speaker 1: was a part of that journey and watching you just
- 13:24Speaker 1: break out, you know, watching Ernie break out, but just
- 13:26Speaker 1: watching you because you were uniquely different from us, because
- 13:30Speaker 1: you know, you was you was a talk show guy.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You was articular. You know, you look like you you're
- 13:35Speaker 1: selling up two page, you know, selling time, you know,
- 13:39Speaker 1: telling calls. You know, that was your That was That
- 13:41Speaker 1: was the cool thing about because when I hear Bill
- 13:43Speaker 1: Belly was hosting the tour, you know, Deaf Comedy Jam tour,
- 13:47Speaker 1: that was a natural because your gifts allowed you to
- 13:50Speaker 1: walk out there confidently. What did that confidence come from?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Was it the days that Pepperman was the way you
- 13:55Speaker 1: were brought up? What did that confidence come from? Phil, Well,
- 13:59Speaker 1: A lot of it. A lot of it was the
- 14:01Speaker 1: practice and the hard work, you know at the Peppermint
- 14:05Speaker 1: and having a room too to work out and see
- 14:09Speaker 1: because most guys don't realize, you know, as comics it's
- 14:12Speaker 1: hard to get set when you're young and you knew,
- 14:15Speaker 1: you know, everyone won't give you a lot of time.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You get ten minutes, you get five minutes, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 1: stuff like that. But what I got lucky was I
- 14:22Speaker 1: had a room where I could work out every week
- 14:26Speaker 1: and do jokes and improv and like you know, make
- 14:29Speaker 1: a bad joke that don't work, go back and fix it,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So I had a chance
- 14:34Speaker 1: to get good so when they when when the opportunity came,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I was literally ready, like I was. I was good
- 14:41Speaker 1: on my feet, so like I could host the show,
- 14:44Speaker 1: because you when you're hosting the show, you gotta be
- 14:46Speaker 1: good on your feet. Anything can go wrong, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you might have to add live a little bit, you
- 14:50Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. But that all those skills came
- 14:53Speaker 1: back to be an attribute um to help me, you know,
- 14:57Speaker 1: seem very seamless on TV. Be I was not prepared
- 15:02Speaker 1: like I always was very prepared for my interviews. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: didn't take it for granted. I made sure I really
- 15:07Speaker 1: knew the people that I was, you know, talking to,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and I'm not sure that I could talk to them,
- 15:13Speaker 1: just like you really know me, you know what I'm saying,
- 15:15Speaker 1: it's not like an interview. It's just like kicking it
- 15:17Speaker 1: with your boy. You know what. You know now I'm
- 15:19Speaker 1: talking to me my boy Bill Bellamy, he's uh starting
- 15:22Speaker 1: a new Netflix limited series. Uh self made the Madam
- 15:26Speaker 1: c J. Walker story. Before we get into the actual
- 15:30Speaker 1: gud of the show, let's talk about two very key
- 15:33Speaker 1: executive producers who producers who own this show, Lebron James
- 15:37Speaker 1: and Maverick Carter. You know, these two individuals who are
- 15:42Speaker 1: showing that being an athlete or being the person who's
- 15:45Speaker 1: working with the athlete and the U and the management
- 15:49Speaker 1: side and the agency side. That's Maverick Carter. How important
- 15:53Speaker 1: it is. Do you feel their roles played in this
- 15:56Speaker 1: project being up green litt Well, I think it was.
- 16:01Speaker 1: First of all, it's a lot of reasons why this
- 16:03Speaker 1: project was got made. It's one of the most matter.
- 16:06Speaker 1: C J. Walker is one of the most prolific women
- 16:10Speaker 1: in American history. She also is absolutely African American. But
- 16:15Speaker 1: it's just the story that's inspiring for women. And I'm
- 16:18Speaker 1: sure Octavia wanted to do this passion project. Um teamed
- 16:24Speaker 1: up with Lebron and Maverick and those guys and they
- 16:28Speaker 1: they they wanted to do it as well. And it's
- 16:30Speaker 1: like when you use your leverage. You got the stars,
- 16:33Speaker 1: you got the passions, and we got the projects, social
- 16:37Speaker 1: media status and the social media. But yeah, because they
- 16:40Speaker 1: already know we can promote it. They already know it's
- 16:42Speaker 1: a great story. They already know we got talented actors
- 16:46Speaker 1: and we got the stars and the power. So we
- 16:48Speaker 1: everyone put there, put their Superman suit on, and we
- 16:51Speaker 1: made a great limited series. Like I think people are
- 16:55Speaker 1: gonna be buzzing about it. It's coming out March twenty.
- 16:58Speaker 1: If you're gonna start, you know, you're gonna see a
- 17:00Speaker 1: bunch of press. You're gonna see me our j V Spencer,
- 17:04Speaker 1: Tiffany had Its, Blair Underwood, Carmen and Joe Go. We're
- 17:07Speaker 1: all gonna be doing something. Casey Lemons who is the director.
- 17:12Speaker 1: She also directed Harriet, so her movie was just nominated
- 17:15Speaker 1: for an oscar you know what I'm saying. So it's
- 17:17Speaker 1: like we got all this, all this great power. This
- 17:21Speaker 1: is what I hope we can continue to do in
- 17:23Speaker 1: the business of entertainment is tell our stories and um
- 17:29Speaker 1: team up together and make make stuff that you know,
- 17:32Speaker 1: like the Love Jones like Madam C. J. Walker Classics.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You know that, you know we can look back and
- 17:38Speaker 1: be proud of you know, I'm happy to be in
- 17:41Speaker 1: this project where people are gonna say, well, dang, how
- 17:44Speaker 1: Bill Bellamy, Bill Many, Bill Bellamy did that too. I
- 17:48Speaker 1: love it. I love it. We're talking about man Bill Bellamy.
- 17:51Speaker 1: We're gonna be right back and listen to Money Making Conversation.
- 17:54Speaker 1: We're gonna get more detail about the movie by the
- 17:56Speaker 1: man who has a blessed career because he's a blessed talent.
- 17:58Speaker 1: He's a one of a guy. I just feel fortunate
- 18:01Speaker 1: I've known this young man and watch him grow. He's
- 18:03Speaker 1: watching me grow. And to be on my show to
- 18:05Speaker 1: day is, as they say, a turning point as the
- 18:08Speaker 1: one you know, changing lanes my brother I'm hosting and
- 18:12Speaker 1: he talking. Money Making Conversations continues online at www. Dot

- 18:25Speaker 1: you stop thinking about your dreams and put some plans
- 18:28Speaker 1: into action. Hi, you're listening to Rashan McDonald and this
- 18:31Speaker 1: is money Making Conversation. I'm your host self made that
- 18:35Speaker 1: Madam C. J. Walker story. Um, Bill is one of
- 18:38Speaker 1: the stars of that project that comes out to say
- 18:41Speaker 1: television limited television series of Netflix March twenty, Bill, Um,
- 18:47Speaker 1: you know, when you get engaged, you start talking about
- 18:50Speaker 1: the the power or particular project like this, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: hair care business, what you know is so still so
- 18:56Speaker 1: dominant today. Chose the first self made and I'm not
- 19:00Speaker 1: even inherited self made female millionaire, you know, in that time,
- 19:05Speaker 1: which is crazy when you think about early nineteen hundreds,
- 19:08Speaker 1: How the hell did she do it? That's what I'm
- 19:11Speaker 1: I can't believe it. I know. You know there's no
- 19:14Speaker 1: Martin Luther King Jr. No Malcolm X. We're talking early
- 19:18Speaker 1: nineteen hundreds, broy. She was driving around and the cars
- 19:22Speaker 1: had the coats everything she was. She was looking like
- 19:24Speaker 1: she was rich too. That was the cool thing. She
- 19:27Speaker 1: was the first opera Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and
- 19:30Speaker 1: so so when you when you when you when you
- 19:32Speaker 1: look at the talent involved, you know, you know, like
- 19:34Speaker 1: you mentioned like Tavior Spencer, you got your board. Bill,
- 19:38Speaker 1: See it's at an African American man who looked like
- 19:40Speaker 1: they could have lived in that era. You know what
- 19:42Speaker 1: I'm saying. And Bill Bellamy and black underweard. They looked
- 19:45Speaker 1: like they could have been rolling back there. Look at normal,
- 19:48Speaker 1: Look at normal. Let me tell you what's so crazy
- 19:51Speaker 1: that you just said that? Right? So, so just imagine
- 19:55Speaker 1: it's the early nineteen hundreds, right, black black people dressed
- 20:00Speaker 1: so fly. We were very meticulous. Then we were suited
- 20:06Speaker 1: and booted. I mean the suits, the fabrish. I don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: know what we had the money, but we would just clean.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Right when I went to wardrobe and put on this
- 20:18Speaker 1: these amazing suits, right, I felt like I always said
- 20:22Speaker 1: this must be my great grandfather. Yes, I felt like
- 20:26Speaker 1: I was like, this is what my great grandfather looked like, right, right,
- 20:30Speaker 1: Because when you see me, when I the way I
- 20:33Speaker 1: look like, you're gonna be like, yeah, he could have
- 20:35Speaker 1: He could have been in the nineteen nineteen twel just
- 20:38Speaker 1: walk out the house. I'm a when it when it
- 20:41Speaker 1: was announced, used part of it just whatso to say,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, great casting makes a great series, you know
- 20:46Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And and you know, you know, look,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I'm a cat. I've cast enough talented people to go.
- 20:53Speaker 1: He's perfect for that role, Blair and the Wood, He's perfect.
- 20:56Speaker 1: We don't have to mess with the hair, start to
- 20:58Speaker 1: do no power to make up nothing. They got the wall.
- 21:02Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Just walk out there, Just
- 21:03Speaker 1: walk out there, be yourself. Brother, You look like because
- 21:06Speaker 1: back then, like you said, man, you know black barbers
- 21:08Speaker 1: you know, used to all have white used to walk
- 21:10Speaker 1: to go to barber's barbershops and suits. We should look
- 21:13Speaker 1: really good, man. And how we approached out said, we
- 21:16Speaker 1: walked out in public and we were well groomed. It
- 21:19Speaker 1: was it was an error. It was a style that
- 21:22Speaker 1: was really imminent at that time. You know, where you
- 21:26Speaker 1: had top hats. We had the ladies stressed in these
- 21:30Speaker 1: beautiful flowing dresses. Even the ladies wore knights hat sometimes
- 21:34Speaker 1: you know, with a little flower on it and stuff like.
- 21:37Speaker 1: So when you go back and you look how elegant
- 21:39Speaker 1: we were, you know, we were very elegant and stylish people.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So I was just like, dang, man, it felt like
- 21:47Speaker 1: we went back in time. Be honest, I felt like
- 21:49Speaker 1: I got a chance of going the time, Gene and
- 21:51Speaker 1: just go back and see all my cousins and there. Well,
- 21:55Speaker 1: you know, it's beautiful because of the fact that you know,
- 21:58Speaker 1: you're naturally funny, Bill, and this is a drum. This
- 22:01Speaker 1: is a drum, okay, But you're always gonna put that
- 22:03Speaker 1: bill bell and be spin. That's what I love about
- 22:05Speaker 1: you. You You know you're gonna you're gonna find a way
- 22:07Speaker 1: to bring some natural humor. And that's one of the
- 22:10Speaker 1: reasons why you were cast, because you know, you don't
- 22:12Speaker 1: want something to be just you know, like that was
- 22:14Speaker 1: a bad time, a sad time for black people. We're
- 22:17Speaker 1: just telling the story about it. A person who who
- 22:20Speaker 1: had limited education skills, you know, how to teach yourself
- 22:22Speaker 1: how to read and write what I'm saying, and uh,
- 22:25Speaker 1: was motivated through the hair care business, which I which
- 22:28Speaker 1: really is amazing that way back then, you know, she
- 22:32Speaker 1: figured it out and today we're still, you know, in
- 22:37Speaker 1: the billion dollar industry and you look at things like
- 22:39Speaker 1: Essence and the owner of Essence, you know, is in
- 22:42Speaker 1: the billion dollar hair care business and things like that.
- 22:45Speaker 1: So so that really is a it's kind of like
- 22:48Speaker 1: a time machine. And when you look at what's happening
- 22:50Speaker 1: today and what happened back then when you were telling
- 22:52Speaker 1: that story that black people care about how they look.
- 22:55Speaker 1: There's women absolutely, especially women into this day. It's a
- 22:59Speaker 1: part of about culture. It's a need. Madam she Jiwaka
- 23:03Speaker 1: saw that there was a need and her her her
- 23:06Speaker 1: purpose or her mission statement was to make black women
- 23:10Speaker 1: feel beautiful and black women that look like her. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: everyone said, no, no, you can't do that. You gotta
- 23:16Speaker 1: do it this way, you gotta do it that way.
- 23:18Speaker 1: She had a vision in her mind that she wanted
- 23:21Speaker 1: to be this way, and she kept chipping at it
- 23:24Speaker 1: tause she got it the way she wanted and that
- 23:27Speaker 1: to me was like the pioneering part about it. And
- 23:30Speaker 1: my character, I play a guy named Sweetness. Sweetness is
- 23:35Speaker 1: that hustler, right, the sweet come on now, come on
- 23:42Speaker 1: now right? They wanted they wanted it, man, I had
- 23:49Speaker 1: to go put it on them. They said, uh, they
- 23:51Speaker 1: needed that person that was gonna bring that that kind
- 23:54Speaker 1: of swab sort of you know, sort of dangerous part
- 23:59Speaker 1: of what the street side St. Louis was, you know.
- 24:02Speaker 1: And uh so, basically my character was a numbers runner,
- 24:07Speaker 1: you know, either do that came up into been the
- 24:08Speaker 1: barbershop with the piece of paper and wrote the numbers
- 24:12Speaker 1: down to plague the horses and stuff. And he was
- 24:14Speaker 1: always selling something right, right, but he But see the
- 24:18Speaker 1: thing about it, there's a lot of people don't get
- 24:21Speaker 1: get it that the hustler is a salesman. The hustler,
- 24:24Speaker 1: the hustler, it's got maybe four or five profits. You know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: he might be you know, he might help you get
- 24:29Speaker 1: some ladies. He might help you, you know, get you
- 24:31Speaker 1: a car. He maybe get you a real bad loan.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You know that's amazing. Now you you executive produced a
- 24:39Speaker 1: stand up comedy show called Who Got Jokes on TV
- 24:42Speaker 1: one and a very talented lady appeared on your show
- 24:46Speaker 1: back then, Tiffany Hattish, who now started. Isn't that That's
- 24:51Speaker 1: why I love about life? You know when you get
- 24:52Speaker 1: to see the journeys you know, somebody you introduced on
- 24:56Speaker 1: your show the World to the World, Tiffany Hattish, and
- 24:59Speaker 1: we all know what girl's trip did for her career,
- 25:02Speaker 1: and she's exploded on the face. You know when you
- 25:05Speaker 1: when you see things like that, because she's not the
- 25:07Speaker 1: only one you've introduced on that show to have that
- 25:10Speaker 1: are turning pages and you've done you know, the shock
- 25:13Speaker 1: comedy alls alls and all these things. Talk about just
- 25:16Speaker 1: just talk about your your your influenced Bill Bellman, because
- 25:20Speaker 1: when I do the show money making conversations, a lot
- 25:22Speaker 1: of people I have a key word. I say industry
- 25:25Speaker 1: decision makers, people who influenced the game, and you have.
- 25:29Speaker 1: But like you said, let's go all the way back
- 25:30Speaker 1: to Peppermint. When you mentioned all those names, Steve Harvey's surgery,
- 25:34Speaker 1: Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, all those people who went through,
- 25:37Speaker 1: And I told you I knew. I stayed away from
- 25:40Speaker 1: that club. I knew about peppermin Brother. I wasn't going
- 25:42Speaker 1: up and getting my feelings hurt. I wouldn't going up
- 25:44Speaker 1: to get my field. And I knew about you and said,
- 25:47Speaker 1: and when I only knew your name, Bill Bellaman, but
- 25:49Speaker 1: when I saw yo in that gal, that girl was
- 25:53Speaker 1: the host of pepperminck this And so I was expecting
- 25:57Speaker 1: because after the Clifs reputation was so powerful because because
- 26:00Speaker 1: he know, everybody was coming to club. Thugs were coming
- 26:03Speaker 1: in that audier, drug dealers were coming in on it
- 26:06Speaker 1: was it was criminals were sitting in that audience. So
- 26:09Speaker 1: the criminals was laughing on Thursday night. That was crazy,
- 26:14Speaker 1: that that dudes that do harm every week, but on
- 26:17Speaker 1: the Thursday they put their guns down and barbottle and
- 26:21Speaker 1: be up. They're laughing, they butt off. It's a trip
- 26:23Speaker 1: man comedy, comedy and music is like a part of
- 26:27Speaker 1: us that we gotta have. It's really crazy. It's really
- 26:30Speaker 1: crazy because he tells us the truth. When I hosted
- 26:32Speaker 1: Hip Hop Commons to Stop in Houston, and I'll tell
- 26:34Speaker 1: you man, I used to look at people people were
- 26:37Speaker 1: laugh at me and shake my hands. I swear to
- 26:39Speaker 1: you on the other side of the dough, I'll be nervous.
- 26:42Speaker 1: But they were so infatuated with my talents as a
- 26:45Speaker 1: stand up and when they would look at you, Bill,
- 26:47Speaker 1: they would look at you like, Man, I wish I
- 26:49Speaker 1: could be you. Man, You're the man. But you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: goings got a path because they liked that you make
- 26:55Speaker 1: them laugh, which is true. Yes, yes, because in the
- 26:59Speaker 1: sad part about if you do stand up long enough
- 27:01Speaker 1: I host the Color though, you stop seeing them either
- 27:05Speaker 1: something happened to or they got picked up, or something
- 27:08Speaker 1: happened to. So so when you see a talent like
- 27:15Speaker 1: a Tiffanty Hatch who you brought on the show, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: a number of other talents, and you look at the
- 27:18Speaker 1: state of stand up comment and you've done so many
- 27:21Speaker 1: specials as a stand up commed be introduced as one
- 27:24Speaker 1: of the rising stars of stand up, you're acting and
- 27:28Speaker 1: radio as a host you you you host specials, be
- 27:32Speaker 1: a bellarment. You look at your resume. What do you
- 27:36Speaker 1: tell a young talent because you don't seem to say
- 27:39Speaker 1: I can't do something. I'm willing to do it. But
- 27:42Speaker 1: you said something that was really key, Rishan, I do
- 27:44Speaker 1: my homework. If somebody interviews me, I get to know
- 27:47Speaker 1: who they are. So as a relationship, when we talk
- 27:50Speaker 1: talk about that, I think what we what what People
- 27:52Speaker 1: have to understand that success is not always uh a
- 27:57Speaker 1: happenstance or a coincidence. A lot of success comes from
- 28:02Speaker 1: years of preparation, years of work, after years of concentration
- 28:07Speaker 1: and focus on the thing that you want. Right. I
- 28:11Speaker 1: knew I wanted to be a star before I became
- 28:13Speaker 1: a star, you know. I knew that I was gonna
- 28:16Speaker 1: wear suits because I wanted to look different and look polished.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I wanted to look successful. That was on purpose, right
- 28:23Speaker 1: that those that was before it happened, though, So just me,
- 28:27Speaker 1: I had it in my head that I'm looking at
- 28:30Speaker 1: the landscape of comedy. I'm like, how can I make
- 28:33Speaker 1: a splash in the business that don't know me? I
- 28:36Speaker 1: want people to see me and be excited. I want
- 28:39Speaker 1: people to see me and be interested. So I presented
- 28:42Speaker 1: myself as something that was good, something that was funny,
- 28:46Speaker 1: and something that was like kind of like, what the
- 28:49Speaker 1: heck is that right? Because you know, I didn't look
- 28:52Speaker 1: like I looked like everybody said, you look like you're
- 28:55Speaker 1: about to drop R and B album, you know, right right, right,
- 28:58Speaker 1: right right. So I was like, I got I was like,
- 29:03Speaker 1: I can't think, but I can slang these jokes. So
- 29:07Speaker 1: what ended up happening is and what I can say
- 29:10Speaker 1: to the younger or any business person or any entrepreneur,
- 29:15Speaker 1: is you gotta have the vision for what you want
- 29:18Speaker 1: to do, and you have to supply a need. That
- 29:22Speaker 1: that's how you that's how brands become huge. You supply
- 29:26Speaker 1: something that doesn't exist. You create something and create a
- 29:30Speaker 1: demand for it. Right now, now you're looking at you.
- 29:35Speaker 1: You you look at when I came out, nobody was
- 29:37Speaker 1: wearing suits. Then everybody starts trying to dress up then,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and then then then there was no like really leading
- 29:44Speaker 1: man looking comedians. It's just not you know, except for
- 29:47Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy. I mean, you know what I'm saying. So
- 29:51Speaker 1: when I came out, you know, everybody was like, well,
- 29:53Speaker 1: who's that guy? And then I started doing movies. Then
- 29:56Speaker 1: I did how to be a player. Uh. Now you
- 30:00Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. It's real. It's like, oh, oh,
- 30:03Speaker 1: you can't be funny and you can't be charming, and
- 30:07Speaker 1: it's still be successful and you don't have to be considered,
- 30:11Speaker 1: you know, a straight goofball because you are fundy, right.
- 30:16Speaker 1: So I found a way to make funny a business.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Well you are you are business, you are a brand.
- 30:21Speaker 1: That's the I'm talking to Bill Bellamy. You know his
- 30:23Speaker 1: work in my early interest, I said he has one
- 30:25Speaker 1: of the most diverse acting resumes. Uh, in Hollywood, stand
- 30:29Speaker 1: up comedy specials, Access Hollywood, co hosting with Rachel ray
- 30:33Speaker 1: Hbos and Secure, game show host way before you know,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Steve Harvey was doing game show host way before Michael Strahan,
- 30:40Speaker 1: Anthony Anderson, you know, play the Wide Receiver in any
- 30:43Speaker 1: given Sunday with Jamie Fox and like again, uh, you
- 30:46Speaker 1: know Love Jones, which you you know, I Love Jones
- 30:49Speaker 1: is still one of my favorite movies that you performed in.
- 30:52Speaker 1: And uh, you know those are those rich movies and
- 30:55Speaker 1: that's what you mentioned. You you feel this type of
- 30:57Speaker 1: project will be similar, will impact people because as I
- 31:00Speaker 1: saw Harry at twice, so I know the quality and
- 31:03Speaker 1: she deserves to be nominated for an Oscar in that
- 31:05Speaker 1: particular movie in her role. And these are movies that
- 31:08Speaker 1: they're not they're not trying to uh, they're not doctormentaries.
- 31:11Speaker 1: These are this entertainment, but it's tolding the story that
- 31:14Speaker 1: in a way. And I'm glad it's not a one
- 31:16Speaker 1: off Bill Bellervy. I'm like a limited series, so you
- 31:19Speaker 1: know you can you can tell a beginning middling in right, Yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 1: and you get the chance to um really get engulfed
- 31:26Speaker 1: in the characters. And what I think people are gonna
- 31:29Speaker 1: love it's the acting. They're gonna love the story. They're
- 31:31Speaker 1: going to love the motivation of this woman in the
- 31:35Speaker 1: at a certain time. And it's gonna inspire guys and
- 31:40Speaker 1: girls to be like, yo, man, look at what Madam C. J.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Walker did in the early nineteen all this racism and
- 31:47Speaker 1: this and that and the other, and she made it happen.
- 31:50Speaker 1: So what's your excuse. You got you got, you got
- 31:55Speaker 1: smart phones, you got the internet, You've got all kinds
- 31:57Speaker 1: of stuff going on. You're talking about you can't make
- 31:59Speaker 1: somebody yourself. Man, you better get out of you right.
- 32:02Speaker 1: You know you left home. You you just left home
- 32:04Speaker 1: back then? You just left home, right? Yeah? Walker out
- 32:08Speaker 1: here with no no WiFi, you got no backup? Oh
- 32:14Speaker 1: my goodness, self made story started my man. Bill Bellamy
- 32:19Speaker 1: starts March on Netflix is a limited series. I got Netflix,
- 32:23Speaker 1: so I definitely will be watching Bill. Thank you for

- 35:31Speaker 1: You know, you've become a household name uh to get
- 35:34Speaker 1: everything you started here. With that being said, what is
- 35:36Speaker 1: your gift, Lisa? What would you say your gift is?
- 35:40Speaker 1: M It's a great question to start with. I think
- 35:44Speaker 1: my my gift is the ability to see and feel
- 35:48Speaker 1: uh and be with people exactly where they are uh
- 35:51Speaker 1: and and and then to be a possible pathway to
- 35:56Speaker 1: the man of the woman that they're looking to become.
- 35:58Speaker 1: So I can't be all of that to them, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: I can be right where they are with them, hold
- 36:03Speaker 1: that space, and then open up a doorway, a conversation
- 36:07Speaker 1: and action plan, a mindset on the journey to the
- 36:11Speaker 1: person that they say they want to become. I love
- 36:15Speaker 1: the way you kind of like say you kind of
- 36:17Speaker 1: hung on that word. Say you know, I'm listening to
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know your motivator. Now you know you don't hang
- 36:22Speaker 1: on the word that long. Unless it means that people
- 36:25Speaker 1: have these dreams, they have these expectations of themselves. But
- 36:29Speaker 1: is it the effort there? Is that the plan there?
- 36:31Speaker 1: And that's what you're talking about when you're hanging on
- 36:33Speaker 1: the words say correct, right right? Well, first of all, yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I call it a verbal highlights. That word a verbal highlights,
- 36:41Speaker 1: and and it's it's I understand what your intentions are.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying, but it is the tongue
- 36:48Speaker 1: is the tongue in your mouth and the tongue in
- 36:50Speaker 1: your shoes going in the same direction. That's it's a
- 36:55Speaker 1: beautiful question to have because you know, we always hear
- 36:57Speaker 1: the words if that's popular words and the uh in
- 36:59Speaker 1: the motivational world, and that's everyday life. Now, you know,
- 37:02Speaker 1: what's your brand, what's your passion, what's your gift? Jump
- 37:06Speaker 1: for the opportunity, you know, follow your you know, follow
- 37:09Speaker 1: your lead, uh, go out on faith. These these terms
- 37:12Speaker 1: can be they can be they're they're useful, but they
- 37:15Speaker 1: can also be dangerous because just to go out on
- 37:17Speaker 1: faith without a plan always to people is a mistake
- 37:20Speaker 1: and also not even understanding what your brand is. And
- 37:24Speaker 1: sometimes you should like, as you're growing your brand, you
- 37:26Speaker 1: should stay where you are to your your brand can
- 37:30Speaker 1: somewhat afford you an opportunity to pay some bills. So
- 37:32Speaker 1: when you're doing this whole process of traveling and meeting everybody,
- 37:36Speaker 1: like I said in your in your intro, you know,
- 37:38Speaker 1: from a struggling single mom on public assistance to a
- 37:41Speaker 1: millionaire entrepreneur, how do you balance those conversations? Lisa Nichols,
- 37:48Speaker 1: You know, I adopted a long time ago this theory
- 37:53Speaker 1: that I learned. I had never heard of it until
- 37:56Speaker 1: I was like, probably into my late thirties early forties,
- 38:01Speaker 1: and it was called it's called cognitive dissonance and cognitive dissonance.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Invite anyone who's listened to my voice look it up,
- 38:08Speaker 1: study it, and become an an avid applier of cognitive
- 38:14Speaker 1: dissonance and cognitive dissonances. When you see yourself further in
- 38:20Speaker 1: front of you than you actually are, and you you
- 38:23Speaker 1: know that in order to get there you have to
- 38:26Speaker 1: do something different. So it's a disruption of the brain.
- 38:29Speaker 1: The brain is seeing you in a space that you
- 38:32Speaker 1: physically are not, financially or not, and you know that
- 38:36Speaker 1: if that's who you are to become, you need to
- 38:40Speaker 1: do some things that you're not doing, stop doing something
- 38:43Speaker 1: that you are doing, begin to adopt some ways of
- 38:45Speaker 1: thinking that you haven't adopted yet. That literally there is
- 38:48Speaker 1: a mental discomfort because the way you're living, being operating
- 38:53Speaker 1: and what your experience is incongruent to who you know
- 38:56Speaker 1: yourself to be. So I I early on Rashan adopted
- 39:02Speaker 1: that behavior and mindset. Right now, you're an interesting thing
- 39:08Speaker 1: about that? Is that so because you used the word
- 39:10Speaker 1: early on. So let's go back to your background a
- 39:12Speaker 1: little bit, because there are a lot of people want
- 39:14Speaker 1: to be you, our version of you, or feel that
- 39:17Speaker 1: they can do this. They can motivate people because people
- 39:20Speaker 1: call my show. They stopped in the streets. They know
- 39:22Speaker 1: who I am. To go, Hey, I want to get
- 39:23Speaker 1: into motivational speaking business. I have some things I want
- 39:26Speaker 1: to say. So how did you tell us about your
- 39:29Speaker 1: background and how did you get started? Lisa? Well, you
- 39:33Speaker 1: know it's funny because I didn't. I didn't step into motivation,
- 39:38Speaker 1: inspiration or transformation. Those are all you know in the
- 39:42Speaker 1: same zip code right now. I didn't step into this
- 39:48Speaker 1: community saying I wanted to be this person. I stepped
- 39:52Speaker 1: in the into this community working to save my own life.
- 39:57Speaker 1: So I am a wounded heat I am a victim
- 40:03Speaker 1: who just kept going to victor and I sat down
- 40:06Speaker 1: the victim conversation and picked up the I want to
- 40:09Speaker 1: be a champion for this kind of experience for others
- 40:12Speaker 1: because I came through it. So um I discovered motivation
- 40:17Speaker 1: because I was so depressed and I was so sad,
- 40:19Speaker 1: and I was broken broken, and then I became tired
- 40:24Speaker 1: of being broken broken. It didn't happen overnight that I
- 40:27Speaker 1: knew how to stop being broken broken. I just started
- 40:33Speaker 1: a quest to one discover Who could I be if
- 40:37Speaker 1: I stopped being this this frustrated, angry, hurt, scared person.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Who could I become? Who could I become if I
- 40:46Speaker 1: stopped demming my light and only showing you half of
- 40:49Speaker 1: my lights so that I don't impose on on your
- 40:52Speaker 1: effort to find your own life? Who can I become? Uh?
- 40:56Speaker 1: If I gave myself a thousand second chances because I
- 41:00Speaker 1: keep falling down. But if I stopped counting the fall
- 41:03Speaker 1: downs and I stopped counting and I start counting the
- 41:06Speaker 1: get ups, who could I be? So I just kept
- 41:08Speaker 1: I put on my door the explorer hat Rashan, and
- 41:10Speaker 1: I turned the light on the on the front of it,
- 41:12Speaker 1: and I just began to explore who Lisa can become
- 41:17Speaker 1: as a single mother, as someone born in in South
- 41:21Speaker 1: central and live between the Harlem Crip thirties and the
- 41:23Speaker 1: role in sixties. Who had three fights a week to
- 41:25Speaker 1: get home from school, who's function who is functionally dyslexic?
- 41:30Speaker 1: Who could she become? So really, I started this journey
- 41:35Speaker 1: just in discovery of who can I become. I'm I'm
- 41:39Speaker 1: gonna be honest with you. I didn't started saying I'm
- 41:40Speaker 1: a favorite world, I'm inspired the world, I'm gonna be
- 41:44Speaker 1: a millionaire. No, I said, I'm gonna get off government's assistance.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop you. I'm gonna stop meeting wick when
- 41:51Speaker 1: women infinite children. I'm gonna stop thinking I'm not beautiful
- 41:55Speaker 1: in my moca skin and my full lips, with my
- 41:57Speaker 1: round hips and my kinky here, I'm gonna stop. So
- 42:00Speaker 1: the first part of my journey I was running away
- 42:04Speaker 1: from all my chaos, and then I bumped into possibility
- 42:08Speaker 1: and I liked the way it felt, and then I
- 42:10Speaker 1: start pursuing something new. I'm gonna be perfectly well, that's
- 42:13Speaker 1: how it started. Everybody in the booth got the hand up.
- 42:17Speaker 1: They got the hand up, Lisa, they got the hand up.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Now you know, everybody to do white people, black people,
- 42:25Speaker 1: everybody got the hand out. That's a relatable speech. That's
- 42:29Speaker 1: a relatable speech. You know, I'm saying, it's not a
- 42:31Speaker 1: black thing, it's not a white, a Christian thing, it's
- 42:34Speaker 1: not a Buddha thing, it's not a woman thing. It's
- 42:36Speaker 1: not it's a human spirit, my human spirit. When I
- 42:39Speaker 1: discovered that my human spirit is unbreakable, it's unshakable, and
- 42:44Speaker 1: it's unavailable to my bank account balance, that has broke
- 42:47Speaker 1: down relationship that I may have been in how much
- 42:50Speaker 1: I was weighing at the time. My human spirit has
- 42:53Speaker 1: always and will always simply ask for the command. What
- 42:57Speaker 1: are we going to conquer next? Give me a command?
- 43:01Speaker 1: When I figured that outur Shine. When I figured that out, man,
- 43:04Speaker 1: I just I was like, it was like the new
- 43:07Speaker 1: It was a new drug for me. It literally was
- 43:09Speaker 1: a new drug for me. I was like, Oh, I'm
- 43:11Speaker 1: gonna take this in every day. I'm gonna inhale, I'm
- 43:12Speaker 1: gonna drink it. I'm a I'm aware and I'm gonna
- 43:15Speaker 1: rub it on. I'm a bathe in it possibility. And
- 43:17Speaker 1: when I realized that if I can think about it,
- 43:20Speaker 1: but not just think about it, if I could see
- 43:22Speaker 1: it clearly clear colors, if I could smell it, I
- 43:25Speaker 1: didn't want to just see my dreams. I wanted to
- 43:27Speaker 1: smell them. I wanted to taste them. So I would
- 43:29Speaker 1: go to people's house that live like I wanted to live.
- 43:33Speaker 1: I find a way to get in. I find a
- 43:35Speaker 1: way to get in resin and I rubbed on their furniture,
- 43:39Speaker 1: would club on their center islands. I would up on
- 43:43Speaker 1: their cars. And I'm not materialistic, but I believe that
- 43:45Speaker 1: the God that I served says, if there's zero distance
- 43:48Speaker 1: between you and it, and it is available to you.
- 43:50Speaker 1: So I just put zero distance between me and all
- 43:52Speaker 1: the things I dreamt about, the lifestyle, the people to love.
- 43:56Speaker 1: And then I I felt it. I could taste it,
- 43:58Speaker 1: I could see it, I could smell it. I took
- 44:00Speaker 1: a picture next to it, and then I brought it
- 44:02Speaker 1: back into my hemisphere in my mindset, and then I
- 44:05Speaker 1: adopted cognitive dissonance. Please look that up, y'all, I said,
- 44:09Speaker 1: who do I have to become? What do I have
- 44:12Speaker 1: to do to shorten the distance between me and it?
- 44:16Speaker 1: I'm just telling you, I'm com gonna be quiet. Now,
- 44:18Speaker 1: let you talk. I got excited, Lisa, Lisa, you know,
- 44:22Speaker 1: let me tell yourself. That's what I love you. I'm
- 44:24Speaker 1: telling you, right, you know, I got to I got
- 44:26Speaker 1: this chance to see you live several years ago at
- 44:28Speaker 1: ESSs just sitting in the back of the room, just
- 44:30Speaker 1: sitting are having the same motivational tone having people stand
- 44:34Speaker 1: up point at you. Yeah girl, do it dood you know.
- 44:40Speaker 1: You know when people get motivated, they don't say much word,
- 44:42Speaker 1: they don't say many sence. They just go tall, point
- 44:45Speaker 1: at you and you just look around, get your little
- 44:47Speaker 1: s shake your hand left and right. Come on now,
- 44:50Speaker 1: come on now, Because that's the blessing of being able
- 44:54Speaker 1: to find your gift, or find your passion or or
- 44:57Speaker 1: build upon it. Because when I hear you talk, you know,
- 45:00Speaker 1: like I tell people in high school, I should drive
- 45:02Speaker 1: around in different neighborhoods. I used to cut out cars
- 45:05Speaker 1: or that I didn't I just liked them. I just
- 45:08Speaker 1: knew this type of car I wanted if I had money,
- 45:11Speaker 1: to be in it, to experience it, deliver it, to
- 45:15Speaker 1: be it. And I always tell people when I walk
- 45:16Speaker 1: around in people houses where they have more money than me,
- 45:19Speaker 1: you know, I I just visualized how they would look.
- 45:21Speaker 1: And so so when I when I buy something that
- 45:24Speaker 1: I want is at that level, then I'm already there mentally,
- 45:27Speaker 1: and so I always tell people, don't deny what you
- 45:29Speaker 1: can get just because you think you don't have it currently.
- 45:32Speaker 1: And that's what that means. You're shutting down your future,
- 45:34Speaker 1: You're shutting down your options to be successful. And that's
- 45:37Speaker 1: the wrong way to think. And so when I look
- 45:39Speaker 1: at people talking about visionary boards, vision boards and all that,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know, that's nothing new. We just we just you know,
- 45:45Speaker 1: it's just that's just a fancy word. They put on
- 45:48Speaker 1: a dream, that's just a fancy word. They put on
- 45:50Speaker 1: the world a goal. You know. Vision boards have been
- 45:53Speaker 1: in the you know, Ford he had a vision you know,
- 45:57Speaker 1: Edison he had a vision board, you know. And so
- 46:00Speaker 1: now we put all these words and we give too
- 46:01Speaker 1: much power to these little fancy words like brands and
- 46:05Speaker 1: gifts and and uh and envision boards and really just
- 46:08Speaker 1: go back to who you are, what you want to be,
- 46:11Speaker 1: what your dreams are capable of achieving, and not what
- 46:14Speaker 1: you're living at currently, and get rid of those naysays,
- 46:17Speaker 1: because you know, when you were starting to turn that corner, Lisa,
- 46:20Speaker 1: then they say it was coming up girl. What you're
- 46:23Speaker 1: trying to do? You sure about that? You better stay
- 46:26Speaker 1: where you're at, How do you fight off those nay,
- 46:28Speaker 1: says Lisa. Well, first of all, you know, going back
- 46:32Speaker 1: to your visualizing and understanding about having things, I realized
- 46:38Speaker 1: that there's a complete distinction between wealth. Wealth is a
- 46:43Speaker 1: unilateral conversation around money and possessions. That's wealth. And while
- 46:47Speaker 1: that's an indicator of some level of success, wealth is
- 46:51Speaker 1: not the ultimate indicator of success. Abundance is um Abundance
- 46:56Speaker 1: is not just a unilateral UH category called wealth, money
- 47:00Speaker 1: UH and possessions. Abundance is abundance in your relationships, abundant
- 47:06Speaker 1: in having health, wealth abundant, and having spiritual wealth abundance
- 47:11Speaker 1: and having financial was It's one category of a very
- 47:14Speaker 1: large picture. So I want to just be very clear
- 47:16Speaker 1: that that what I pursue and what I have pursued
- 47:19Speaker 1: for the last twenty five years, and what I teach
- 47:21Speaker 1: my students who step onto my multiple multiple forms in
- 47:24Speaker 1: my campus is less pursue abundance because abundance is gonna
- 47:28Speaker 1: feel a whole lot better than wealth. I coach a
- 47:31Speaker 1: lot of very very wealthy people how to have abundance,
- 47:35Speaker 1: and so I just want to make that very clear
- 47:38Speaker 1: that that's the thing that I value most in my life.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Is that this past weekend, while I spoke for an
- 47:45Speaker 1: event that had forty six different countries present, the most
- 47:50Speaker 1: exciting part about my weekend was on Friday night, for
- 47:54Speaker 1: the first time and forty plus years, my father finally
- 47:57Speaker 1: let me shave his beer. He finally trust me, and
- 48:00Speaker 1: up the shape is there and and that was the
- 48:03Speaker 1: highlight of my weekend. While I was talking to thousands
- 48:07Speaker 1: and thousands of people in generating thousands and thousands of dollars,
- 48:10Speaker 1: that was the highlights. So I'm very clear, um Nate sayers.
- 48:14Speaker 1: So let me just first set a tone that, um,
- 48:18Speaker 1: you can never have someone who has a um, you
- 48:22Speaker 1: can never put your sixty four ounce dreams and someone
- 48:27Speaker 1: who has a twenty four ounce capacity. So so so
- 48:31Speaker 1: let's let's let's just start with the truth because the
- 48:33Speaker 1: truth will set of soft free. So I heard somewhere,
- 48:35Speaker 1: so you will have If you have a sixty four
- 48:38Speaker 1: ounce dream, then only give twenty four ounces of that
- 48:42Speaker 1: dream to someone who is a twenty four hours thinker.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Go find go, find a hundred and twenty ounce thinker
- 48:49Speaker 1: and give them your sixty four our drinking and watch
- 48:53Speaker 1: them expanded. So first of all, don't don't do a
- 48:56Speaker 1: disservice to the twenty four hours thinker or to you
- 49:00Speaker 1: by giving your dream that's out of their capacity to someone.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And I'm not saying anything negative about the twenty four
- 49:06Speaker 1: hours thinker. They're not thinking small. They're twenty four hours
- 49:09Speaker 1: is a hundred, they're twenty four hours, and they're totally
- 49:13Speaker 1: fine until you go and try to cram your sixty
- 49:16Speaker 1: four hours. So they're twenty four our capacities. Love them
- 49:20Speaker 1: and be with them right where they are. So I'm
- 49:22Speaker 1: gonna say that and then say, the people in your
- 49:25Speaker 1: life did not sign up to be your business partners.
- 49:28Speaker 1: They don't sign up to be your fans. They don't
- 49:30Speaker 1: sign up to be the first readers of your book.
- 49:32Speaker 1: They don't sign up to make your book a best seller.
- 49:34Speaker 1: They decided to be your student. Allow them to be
- 49:37Speaker 1: who they are. That's that's number two. Number three is
- 49:41Speaker 1: your job is to be born into a community biological, geographical, spiritual, cultural,
- 49:49Speaker 1: that's the community you were born into. Allow that community
- 49:52Speaker 1: to coexist with you. Your second job is to go
- 49:55Speaker 1: find your second community that's gonna make you stand on
- 49:58Speaker 1: your tippy toes. That's what I did, and when I
- 50:01Speaker 1: found that second community lowers the hold. It was a conference.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I was the only one of three women. I was
- 50:08Speaker 1: the only person of any color, So that's that's across
- 50:12Speaker 1: Latin Asian Indians, no color but me. And then I
- 50:16Speaker 1: was the youngest person by eighteen years. So I felt
- 50:19Speaker 1: like an alien on an entirely different planet. And they
- 50:23Speaker 1: were speaking an entirely different language. No oblo espagno. I
- 50:27Speaker 1: didn't know what they were talking about. Still talking about
- 50:29Speaker 1: PPM term agreements r o I, revenue streams, um of
- 50:34Speaker 1: revenue paths and and p n l s And I'm like,
- 50:37Speaker 1: what are they talking about? But I didn't run. I
- 50:40Speaker 1: didn't run because I was different. I didn't run because
- 50:43Speaker 1: I stood out. I didn't run because I was lonely.
- 50:46Speaker 1: I would go to the conference. I would spend three thousand,
- 50:49Speaker 1: seven hundred and eighty two dollars that I didn't have.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I would go there for eight days, and I would
- 50:55Speaker 1: feel lonely and out of place. But I knew that
- 50:58Speaker 1: group was causing me to stand roshan on my tippy toes.
- 51:04Speaker 1: They caused me to stay up at night and research
- 51:08Speaker 1: what does PPM mean term agreement r o I? What
- 51:11Speaker 1: does it mean to have seven revenue streams. What does
- 51:13Speaker 1: it mean to have a p n L. I had
- 51:15Speaker 1: no idea what this stuff was. So this group, by
- 51:18Speaker 1: being in their physical proximity, they kept me in cognitive dissonance.
- 51:24Speaker 1: They kept me uncomfortable in who I could become if
- 51:28Speaker 1: I stood around long enough. People often think when they
- 51:31Speaker 1: become uncomfortable, they back away, and I say, don't back away,
- 51:36Speaker 1: don't back away from the discomfort. It's simply It simply
- 51:39Speaker 1: means that you're convention and you're convenience. As you heard
- 51:42Speaker 1: me say, don't live on the same block. You're not
- 51:44Speaker 1: gonna be convenience on your way to you, the greatest
- 51:47Speaker 1: version of you. I'll say that again, You're not gonna
- 51:49Speaker 1: be convenience on on the journey to the greatest version
- 51:55Speaker 1: of your. Your greatness lives on the outside of your
- 52:00Speaker 1: for zone. What you've already done, you've already done. So
- 52:03Speaker 1: if you're comfortable, it's because you ain't growing. If you
- 52:06Speaker 1: complain that if you feel good, everything, oh, everything is good,
- 52:10Speaker 1: All things are good, that means you're not at the
- 52:12Speaker 1: edge of your box. I'm not saying feel bad, but
- 52:15Speaker 1: I am saying feel stretched. My dear talking to the
- 52:18Speaker 1: amazing and put the word amazing in front of her. Amazing.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Lisa Nichols bookselling, bestselling author, coach, founder, motivational speaker, founding CEO,

- 52:37Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about all that in our next break.

- 52:57Speaker 1: in the mirror every morning, you passed the most unique
- 53:00Speaker 1: thing in the world. And I talked about this in
- 53:02Speaker 1: my stand up. You are unique in every way. You
- 53:05Speaker 1: gotta look at what's unique and you and then capitalize on.
- 53:09Speaker 1: The Money Making Conversations continues online at www dot money
- 53:14Speaker 1: Making Conversations dot com. I just re Shane McDonald. You're
- 53:16Speaker 1: listening to money Making Conversation, the show I created to
- 53:19Speaker 1: provide information to individuals like you. Who are listening. There
- 53:23Speaker 1: are people out there who are successful. There are people
- 53:25Speaker 1: who have traveled some paths that you want to travel.
- 53:28Speaker 1: They have dreams that you want to achieve. They have
- 53:30Speaker 1: goals that you want to set. That's what money making
- 53:33Speaker 1: conversations is all about. More importantly, they motivate you, not
- 53:36Speaker 1: only which with your spirit, but information information that it's
- 53:40Speaker 1: tied to work. You gotta have work ethic, you have
- 53:42Speaker 1: to have a You can't limit yourself based on I
- 53:45Speaker 1: don't have enough time. I'm not an early morning person.
- 53:48Speaker 1: You can't have excuses in your path to success. That's
- 53:51Speaker 1: what That's what money main conversation is all about. One
- 53:53Speaker 1: of the leaders in that, one of the true queens Captains,
- 53:57Speaker 1: Admiral's or Presidents Diamond Club member amazing is the incredible
- 54:04Speaker 1: Lisa Nichols. Lisa, welcome back to the show. Thank you
- 54:07Speaker 1: so much for having me. I want to talk about
- 54:10Speaker 1: this right quickly. Let's talk about the impact you have
- 54:12Speaker 1: had on the teens. Do your nonprofit foundation Motivating the
- 54:16Speaker 1: Teen Spirit. You have touched the lives over over two
- 54:19Speaker 1: hundred and seventy thousand teens prevented over thirty eight hundred
- 54:22Speaker 1: teen suicide supported hundred dropouts and returning them to school,
- 54:27Speaker 1: and it's help thousands to reunite with their families. Okay,
- 54:31Speaker 1: that's yeah, okay, yeah yeah, but that you know, when
- 54:37Speaker 1: he said, I filled my my heart expans At nineteen, um,
- 54:42Speaker 1: I had already been you know, um super achiever in
- 54:46Speaker 1: some areas in school, as a track, as an as
- 54:50Speaker 1: an athlete, um uh, as a as a social leader
- 54:54Speaker 1: in school. Though I struggle academically and a lot of areas,
- 54:57Speaker 1: I seem to be very happy. And at eight Teams,
- 55:01Speaker 1: I found myself um in a very dark place, and
- 55:05Speaker 1: I even contemplated suicide. And I remember standing in the
- 55:09Speaker 1: bathroom with a handful of Thailand All and I wasn't
- 55:14Speaker 1: sure if they would do the trick at eight thailand
- 55:16Speaker 1: All to be exact and extra strength thailand on. I
- 55:19Speaker 1: wasn't sure if this will be enough. But I realized
- 55:22Speaker 1: I didn't really want to die. I just wanted the
- 55:24Speaker 1: pain that I felt in my soul to stop. And
- 55:28Speaker 1: I remember falling to my knees and crying out to
- 55:31Speaker 1: God in my little one bit room house that my
- 55:33Speaker 1: dad and I lived in, when I said, God, if
- 55:36Speaker 1: you helped to relieve me of this pain right now.
- 55:39Speaker 1: I'll spend the rest of my life helping teens be
- 55:42Speaker 1: emotionally healthy, to find joy, to be able to discover
- 55:45Speaker 1: how to have healthy conversations. I'll be a part of
- 55:50Speaker 1: the solution. God, I remember that day like it were yesterday.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Rashan and I went on for uh. I got up,
- 55:57Speaker 1: got through that. I got through that dark moment. Ten
- 56:00Speaker 1: years later, I'm busy, you know, started getting my life together.
- 56:03Speaker 1: I'm a new mom. Jelani is just one years old,
- 56:07Speaker 1: and I feel it's not And it was God's saying,
- 56:12Speaker 1: it's time for you to pay on that promise you
- 56:15Speaker 1: made right And you didn't have to knock hard. He
- 56:20Speaker 1: didn't have to knock loud. He didn't have to knock loud. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 56:23Speaker 1: yeah yeah. And you know I shrugged it off the
- 56:25Speaker 1: first a couple of times. God, wait, hold on, I'm
- 56:27Speaker 1: just finding my rhythm. I stop this job. I'm making
- 56:30Speaker 1: six figures. I was thinking a hundred and ten dollars
- 56:32Speaker 1: at the time. I was excited. I'm like, God, I'm
- 56:35Speaker 1: getting off, you know, government's assistance. Finally, I'll pay you
- 56:39Speaker 1: back later, I promise you. I promise it. Hearing that
- 56:43Speaker 1: knock and UH and so I created Motivating the Team
- 56:50Speaker 1: Spirit UM and Motivating the Team Spirit as an emotional
- 56:53Speaker 1: literacy program. It's I want to be very clear, it's
- 56:56Speaker 1: not for it's not a youth intervention program. So it's
- 56:59Speaker 1: not a place for teams who have behavioral challenges or
- 57:02Speaker 1: for kids who have just been in trouble to come
- 57:04Speaker 1: while it is their haven so that they can find
- 57:07Speaker 1: their own emotional intelligence. We for every team we have
- 57:11Speaker 1: that in academic or social trouble, we're sitting next to
- 57:15Speaker 1: them as a as a child who has a four
- 57:16Speaker 1: point for g P A and so Motivating the Team
- 57:20Speaker 1: Spirit is designed to be the one of the few
- 57:23Speaker 1: spaces where teens and young adults because now we go
- 57:27Speaker 1: up to age, they can discover how to distinguish between
- 57:33Speaker 1: their negative self talk and their powerful self talk UM,
- 57:36Speaker 1: how to access their self esteem when it's been challenged
- 57:40Speaker 1: by something that's occurred, how to get back in integrity
- 57:44Speaker 1: when they've broken an integrity contract something that's never spoken
- 57:48Speaker 1: of and never mentioned, but when you break it, it
- 57:51Speaker 1: risks a relationship. So teaching them the life skills around
- 57:54Speaker 1: emotional intelligence UM and UM. I'm super excited. We we
- 57:59Speaker 1: do our events three times a year in San Diego,
- 58:01Speaker 1: and we also travel and bring those same UM trainings
- 58:05Speaker 1: and workshops, emotional literacy workshops to your community near you. Um.
- 58:10Speaker 1: What I'm excited about is that the lead trainer and
- 58:12Speaker 1: the director of MOTE in the Team Spirit now is
- 58:15Speaker 1: my twenty five year old son and ji Lynn. And
- 58:18Speaker 1: so he now teaches the curriculum. I teach beside him sometimes. Um.
- 58:23Speaker 1: But he grew up in it, you know, it was
- 58:25Speaker 1: a thing that shapes his character. So he has it
- 58:27Speaker 1: steeped in him more than it was even steeped in me.
- 58:30Speaker 1: Um and so UM, it's some of the work that
- 58:32Speaker 1: I am the most, I'm the proudest of. So you've
- 58:35Speaker 1: heard that statement preachers kids. So he's a motivation kid.
- 58:38Speaker 1: He's an m K. Yeah, you know what. Let me
- 58:42Speaker 1: go a step further, he's a t K. He's a
- 58:45Speaker 1: transformational kid. Mama wasn't. Mama just wasn't into the raw
- 58:51Speaker 1: rob mama substance. I said, son, your character is defined
- 58:55Speaker 1: by what you do in the dark of the night
- 58:56Speaker 1: when no one's looking. I don't care what you do
- 58:58Speaker 1: when the lights are on you. I want to know
- 59:00Speaker 1: the decisions you make for no one's looking. So he's
- 59:02Speaker 1: a teacher, he's a transformational There you go, there you go,
- 59:05Speaker 1: and you know, you know, just reading some of the
- 59:07Speaker 1: questions that they sent over, and that was talking about
- 59:09Speaker 1: retreats that you do and uh, and I wanted to
- 59:11Speaker 1: talk about you have. It was kind of broken down
- 59:13Speaker 1: in a way and say you have black women only
- 59:16Speaker 1: and you have a different one for men and women.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Explain that rationale and also tell us what exactly is
- 59:23Speaker 1: your or your retreats. So the so the second retreat
- 59:27Speaker 1: that you mentioned is really my first retreat, and that's
- 59:29Speaker 1: what we call our breakthrough retreat. And we're on our
- 59:31Speaker 1: way to our breakthrough retreating a couple of weeks here
- 59:35Speaker 1: and then we have another one coming up. But our
- 59:36Speaker 1: break Through Retreat is designed for everyone, men, woman, black life, Asian,
- 59:40Speaker 1: anthy on, everyone, and it's a place where super heroes
- 59:44Speaker 1: and supersroes come to take your take off. So the
- 59:48Speaker 1: exclusivity I have with all my retreats is that I
- 59:51Speaker 1: want game changers to come only. I want movers and shakers.
- 59:55Speaker 1: I want people who are the answer to other people's challenges.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Meaning if you're the one who gets the halls to
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: get things done. If you're the one whose everyone else's answer,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: if you're the one that in the middle of your crisis,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: you're still trying to help other people, this retreat is
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: for you. And so this retreat is a retreat where
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: you come and at the door, at the door you
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: metaphorically take your cape off and set it down and
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: we put it away for a week. And then what
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: I do is I helped to heal the healers. I
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: helped to restore those who restore others. So um, you
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: come and I we we create a safe space for
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: you to um reignite, rejuvenate, recharge, recommit, redesign your life
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: as is or what's next. And so really, um my
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: last retreat had seven doctors there. March retreat before that
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: had a gentleman who have been the council to eight presidents.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Um uh, people who work at Nassau, people who people
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: who are entrepreneurs who are serving thousands and thousands of
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: people like yourself. So it's a place where where leaders,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: movers and shakers, game changes, gladigators and unicorns come to
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: take our cap off. So that's the break to retreat
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: that's for everyone. And then I have the exact same experience,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: but I have it exclusive for Mover and Shaker black women.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: And that was the thing that I created just because
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I know her, I am her um and it's no
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: discount to any other gender, any other nationality. I just
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: knew that I needed a place where I can restore
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: my faith and sisterhood. And I can and and and
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: and not everyone, not many people. Matter of fact, only
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: one kind of person can get in a Black woman
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: who's into leadership's face. And that's another Black woman that's
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: in leadership that she trust her man. Her man can't
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: get in her face, you know, you know. And so
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I really I didn't create that that retreat. That retreat
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: came after me and got me because I spoke at
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: all these conferences with with with black women leadership from
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: a black enterprise at b ET, at all of these
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: conferences where that Mover and Shaker black women go, and
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: they kept following me saying, you need a place to
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: create a place where you can deep dive with us
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: because we trust you, Lisa, And so I didn't design
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: that as a new program. These sisters came and got
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: me and said, we choose you as the person who
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: can check us love us, require us to heal, help
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: us heal, and then allow us to hold each other's
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: hands while we heal. And I just answered, Okay, wow,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: that's powerful. There's a couple of things that you're doing
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: that I really want to get the message the information
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: out about it is called the Speaker's Mastermind Program, which
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: is an exclusive live training workshop to help speakers take
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: themselves to a new level. And you're launching the Elevate,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: an online personal development program and this year June of
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: this year. So let's start with the Speaker's Mastermind Program
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: and then the slide over to the Elevate. So so
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: many people are aspiring to be speakers. As now. There's
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: two types of speakers. There's the non platform speaker, and
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: that's everybody. That's anyone who opens their mouths and they
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: want to convince, inspire, motivate, or educate someone. So that's
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: the school teacher, that's the judge, that's the person who
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: works in automotive. That's the salesman, that's the saleswoman, that's
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: that's multiple level marketing on any level. Anyone who ever
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: gets a network marketing, direct sales. And you are a
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: speaker because you want to convince, inspire, motivate someone to
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: take action. That's the school teacher. And so there's the
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: non platform speaker. They need to master their speaking. You
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: want to be a masterful speaker when you open your
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: mouth even though you're not on stage. And then there's
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: the platform speaker, and that would be you and me
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: and those who want to create a platform from their speaking.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: So there's non platform speakers and platform speakers. Either way.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: I want to train. I want to train you to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: master your voice and master your message. And what I
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: broke down were the fourteen points that turns the body
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: of speaking into the art and science of speaking. I
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: looked at everything Rashaan, that I had done over the
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: last twenty five years that kept making everything I touched
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: turned to goal. How did I go? How did I
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: get the chicken soup for the sole offer? How did
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: I get the secret offer? How did I be a
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: standout on Oprah? How did I get to Larry King?
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I took all the years, and I looked back and
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I said, let me bottle up. If I could bottle
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: up what I was doing unconsciously, it was my unconscious competence.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: If I can make my unconscious competence, a conscious competence,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: and then share that with someone what would it look
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: like and that speaker's mastermind. Well, you know, the beauty
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: of this conversation I'm having with you is that you
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: know they have singing coaches and classes. And I know
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: when I was in l A, i went to acting
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: acting acting classes. You know, you want to train as
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: a stay in shape and you want to that's all.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: That's all you're saying that this is a this is
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: a speech speaker. You want to be the best at it.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: You know, platform or non platform person that comes come.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: We finally have that resource. You finally have you know,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: events on body of speakers, you know, the out there
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: telling you come in here because I always tell people,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: you know, it's really interesting. Once that has been a
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: former stand up comic. Once you know how to tell
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: a joke, you can actually tell somebody how to tell
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: a joke. And because they're right walls and wrong ways,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: and you can be funny or you're gonna be funny
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: for a short amount of time on stage, or you're
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: gonna be funny for a long period of time on stage.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: And when you're doing these mastermind and speakers, mastermind and
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: you're a correct tider program elevating and in an exclusive
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: training workshop to help speakers take themselves to a new level.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: It's important to understand that that you know, you can
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: top off, or you can level off, or you can
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: like stop growing. And it takes an expert. It takes
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: a person being able to see themselves or see you
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: at the next level. I was watching this Bradley Cooper
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: when he was talking about his acting coach. Uh, she's
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: a female, and how she wasn't able to get him
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: to turn the corner because he was Oh, he never
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: had faith in use if he's always break down, but
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: somehow she was able to let him see the light,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: let him see his ability, to let him walk through
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: his fears. And he's an Oscar winner, you know, director,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: you know one of the major players. And that's all
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: you're saying at the Speakers Mastermind program. Correct, yep, absolutely,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: And we have Speakers Mastermind UH is four concentrated days
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: together with me where I lead you through all the
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: techniques on that I've broken down to the science of speaking.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: But what I love about the training uh and we
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: do have an online live version of that where I
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: teach you online live, if you're out of the country,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: if you or if you want to do a different
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: version of it. Um, I teach you and then you
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: apply it. I teach you and your apply. I'm a coach,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: so I like you to. I want you to discover
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: your own muscles. I want you to build your own apps.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I want you to do your own curls. So at
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: the end of the program, you're lifting more than you've
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: ever lifted before. You've you've surpassed where you were when
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: we started together. And so what I love about the
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: training is that it's interactive, experiential. It's not just theory,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: it's not just concept, it's not just you know, academia.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: It's no applied learning. Show me your video, let me
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: give you feedback on your video. Show me your life
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: stand up, let me give you feedback on it. So
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: it's one of the most engaging platforms that I have
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: watching your technique grow. And so I'm super excited that
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I finally was able. This is after sixteen years of
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: people asking me to show them how to do what
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I do. How do your videos go viral with forty
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: seven million views in seven days? And for a long time,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: I was like I'm not sure than I thought. You
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: let me go back and let me do my let
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: me do the work. Yeah, so it took me five
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: years to come up with this try. That's that I
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: can walk people through. That says you will not cannot
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: fully participate in this program and be the same level speaker,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: whether it's non platform or platform speaker as you were
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: before you came in. There's no way possible. Um, And
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: so I'm super excited about it. It's gonna be my legacy.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: It's going to be the thing I leave to the industry.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I leave through you know, speaking as the wild Wild West.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: There's a structure in it. It's too new, and so
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I feel like I want to give the industry, give
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: the for all the people who feel like they're terrified
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: of speaking. I want to give them some formulas that
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: will reduce their fears, because they will replace their fears
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: with skill sets. And then I want to give the
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: people who love to speak. I want to give them
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: some formulas and tools so they can take it to
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: the next level. Not so that they can shine brighter,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: but so that everyone can serve higher. I want to
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: close out talking about this one event that's coming up
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: in May May first to the third, just in Los Angeles.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Definitely come on now. I gotta help you promote this girl, Okay,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: so make sure you can send me feel we could.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Also you can come back on the show as well,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: but I'm sure it's gonna be soldt by the end.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: It's called Extraordinary You Personal Development Live Event, May first,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: the third in Los Angeles is your show tell us
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: about Lisa Wow. So it is the first ever personal Mastery,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Life gain changing three day UM conference that I've ever
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: done like this. So this is the culmination of all
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: the YouTube videos that I put out there that people love,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: all of the things that they've seen on stage when
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you can say, oh my god, you have me get
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: up again, Oh my god, let me wait my hands,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Oh my god, you have to get out of this like,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: oh my god, you get me standing my greatness. So
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: for the first time ever, I'm gonna say, if I've
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: done anything like that for you, or you want that
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: in your life, come and we're gonna spend three days
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: simply elevating and igniting and put setting your life on fire.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: We're gonna do some interactive things that are gonna literally
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: have you break through old belief systems. Have you continue
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: going where you normally would stop. Have you adopted a
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: new way of thinking. We're gonna come front and push
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: pas cognitive dissonance in the room. But the most important
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: thing I think happens there is that I have the
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: ability to gather some of the best game changers and
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: movers and shakers, gladiators and unicorns on the planet. Will
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: have at least fourteen different countries in the room to
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: now be available to be added to your Rolo deck.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: I encourage and design a time for you to commune
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: with people, exchange information, find out what you're doing, become international,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: expand your own platform. So it's when I tell you
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: it's gonna be three days of sheer fire. This morning,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: I just secured one of the baddest brothers I've ever
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: met inside Transformation for Men to Men and he just said, yes,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: I'm there. So I'm super excited, super excited. If you
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: want to know about it, it's not even publicized yet,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: it will sell out. We are always a fire has
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: that we always be shut down by the fire to problem,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: and I love it. They don't shut the event down,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: They just tell us no more people can come down
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: more people standing in front of the door. Right they
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: stand up from the door, They're like, you know, more
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: people because I was packing out and so right now, UM,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: going to my site Motivating the Masses dot com. Motivating
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: the Masses dot Com. You'll see the advertisement there. Um,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: we are limiting it. I'm not trying to have thousands
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: and thousands of people there Initially. I want my first
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: one to be super super um intimate, would have just
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: a few hundred people based, so it'll be super exciting
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: in Los Angeles. So plan to be with me when
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I tell you you want to set the second half
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: of your year on fire, come to the Extraordinary conference
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: and we'll do it together. Lisa Nichols she is one
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: of the world's most requested motivational speakers. The CEO and
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: founder of Motivation Motivating the Masses, Incorporated. Lisa, thank you
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: for coming on money making Conversations. It's my pleasure. Thank
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: you for having me. Brother. My next guest. Entertainment career
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: has encompassing stage, television, film. You've seen her acting. I
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: can work on abuse, TVs, Saints and Centers. U m
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: c's a House Divided, Tyler Perry's House of Pain Now
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: She's also starring in an exciting new free farm TV
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: series called Motherland Fort Salem, which premiers March eighteenth. Please
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Workome the Money Conversations Dmetria McKinney. Hello, Hello, cool, the
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: first time on my show. Thank you for taking the time,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Thank you for having me. So where are you based at?
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I'm here in Atlanta. I'm from the A. Okay you're
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: from not from the A, but I consider myself a
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Georgia peach. I've been here for about sixteen seventeen, so really,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: you know, we always hear about the moved to Atlanta.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: The opportunities is here, you know, l A. You know
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I moved. I lived in the l A fifteen years.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I lived in New York. My past history as a
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: stand up comic. This is some acting, but basically my
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: career has been tied to management and production and producing
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: shows and films, which is what you do. I've done
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: it all over the country, living in Chicago, lived in
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: of course Los Angele, New York. I'm originally from Houston.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: So when I hear you talk about Atlanta's home, you're
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: actually living in What people want to get out of
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Atlanta from a from an entertainment standpoint. You're acting, You're
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: acting a working actress in Atlanta. How did you pull
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that off? You know, I think sometimes you know, they
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: say ignorance is bliss. I don't think I knew better.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Um I was. I got my start with acting with
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: Mr Tyler Perry, but of course with the stage plays.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: My very first thing, my semi big thing would have
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: been meet the Grounds and we toured that for a
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: year and after that I was like, Okay, I'm in
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Fort Walton Beach. There's definitely not the kind of opportunities
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: that I want here. And Florida, Yeah, you know, military
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: life and that's about it. Um So I made the
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: move here without the real knowledge of what it could
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: be with the television industry. I knew about the music
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: part of it, which was definitely a big draw for
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: me as well as a singer. But when I got here,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: it was just really really cool to see the way
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: that I was here at the beginning of the architecture
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that was coming of the industry here in Atlanta. And
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: it feels that it feels very much talk about that
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: legacy of time frame that you were coming. Now you
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: mentioned we mentioned singing, So what is that play because
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I looked at your resume it was talking about tours
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: like with my boy to rees Tank, talk about that
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: journey because now we just focused on on acting right now,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: right Yeah, well no, not necessarily, UM that that part
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: of the journey was really really cool because that was
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: the original dream. The beautiful thing about a dream is
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: that it grows and it expands, and sometimes it's up,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: sometimes it's down, but it can also be very parallel. Um.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: So music has always been always, always, always, from the
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: very first time I heard Miss Whitney Houston, always been
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: my dream. Um. And getting to perform with people like
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Tyree's Tank Vantage, Hey girl, Vantage, I love you, you know,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: getting to do all of that type of stuff. Charles Wilson,
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I love her. You know, getting to
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: to tour with those types of people. I got an
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: opportunity to learn a lot, not just about the music,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: but also the entertainment of it and the give and
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: take between the audience and they aren't and most definitely
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: the business. You have to remember that even if this
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: is your dream, there is a business very much attached
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: to it, and I think that's what people forget. Okay, okay,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: The singing pull you out of there. Are acting pulled
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: you out of fort wall. The desire to sing, but
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: starting to act fulled me pulled me out of ft wall.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: What did this? This is a natural skill? Or you
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: went to your training to see that you could be
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: an excellent actress because your resume tells me that you're
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: in demand. I've never gone to a class acting. I've
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: always wanted to, always wanted to know, you know, And
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: like you said, everybody's path is a little bit different.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: What I recommend it for people, absolutely not. I definitely
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: want to train. I definitely want to get into some classes.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: But what I've taken the opportunity to do since I've
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: been a working actress for so long, to make sure
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: that I learned something with each and every character, each
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: and every director, from my co stars. I asked the questions.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: It may seem trivial. I'm like, so, why why why? Blue?
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: You know, I'm trying to learn what's happening behind them,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I'm trying to learn the financial part of it. I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: really want to make sure that I'm learning each step
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: of the way. Because I wasn't necessarily brought up in
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: the technical training of it. I'm still just staring at you. Said, look,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: ra Sean, I'm looking at your resume. I just rattled
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: off bounds, sts, moles, Stev, Saints and Sinators. You sees
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: a house divided, that's the HOUSEVID is in Vancouver's tape.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: That one's in l A, l A. That's that's shot
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: in l A. And then you have a Motherland is
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: shot Vancouver, Vancouver, and House of Pain is shot here
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: right here, and Saints and Sinators is shot here. And
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: you're telling me, Rashan um acting classes, uh not yet.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: That's the you know, you know you can, you can
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: be doing something. And I think sometimes you come up
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: with a gift like you seem to have a gift
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: that you just knew you could motivate people, just understood
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: the financial part of it. You also had this funny
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: bone like you're well rounded in all of your gifts,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: but understanding how to utilize them to the best of
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: their abilities. Where the training comes in. And that's what
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I want to learn how to do. Listen, because we
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: got a lot to talk about. I want to get
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: to Motherland because the trailer and you know, I'm a
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. I'm a I'm a superhero.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: I'm a Marvel fan. Girl. Come on that, Captain Marvel.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: That's my girl, you know, you know, I just love that.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: You know, Aquaman was amazing, you know, and I love
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: female leads. You know, A wonder Woman I thought was amazing.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: It's one of those movies where you know, I'm I'm
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: I'm a TV. I'm a guy who surface surfs a
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: TV and if I Wonder Woman, I'm gonna stop. I've
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: seen this how many times I've seen this thing, but
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: I'm still gonna see it and safety with Aquaman, Aquaman
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: and so so so I'm excited when I saw the
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: trailer because it plays into my fantasy. You know, strong women,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: women who are empowered but also who are vulnerable, and
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: that's tied to the mysteries of their power and the
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: journey of becoming responsible, a responsible individual with those powers.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: So tell us for how you got involved with this opportunity.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: When the script came across my desk for me to audition,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I still audition. I've been working for a really long time.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: But I am not above that. That's part of this business.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: So anybody who says, you know, you know, I don't
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: get it. But it came across and I was like,
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: you know, this is necessary, this is now. I had
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: never seen anything involving witchcraft, or or the army or
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: women this way set in an alternate universe and alternate
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: dimension maybe where women are literally the world's army. We
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: are the driving force behind peace, we are the driving
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: force behind safety. Men play a much larger role in
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: the parenting of the children. And um, we have it's
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: it's it's literally all the quote unquote jobs are flipped.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: But I love that you mentioned the vulnerability because the
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: power that is in these which is these women, these armies,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: is the fact that they are vulnerable, They are sensual,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: they are um scared. You know, all of those things
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: that are taken to be weaknesses for women are toned
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: into a strength. And it's a beautiful thing to see.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Now this show we're talking about Motherland's Motherland for Salem.
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: That's going to be premier now Wednesday, March eighteenth on
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: free Form nine pm an Standard time a pm Central
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Time Standard time. Now, when I was watching the trailer,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: I got the feeling that you had. It was it
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: was a lot of physical Oh god, yes, Okay, So
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: so you're you're tall, okay, running under the wires and
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: a lot of brown and crawling and things like that.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Talk about that aspect. You know, have you done anything
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: that physical in your acting career. I have never been
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: blessed with the opportunity to be so straight and battered
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: for money. Um. It was. It was a really cool thing.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: That's the other thing that drew me to it, you know.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: I nineteen was about trying different roles, things that people
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: hadn't seen me in m in the House Divided, I
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: play a villain. I'm always the good girl. I'm always
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: cheated on, you know, I always have a redemptive quality,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and this is just such a total departure from that.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: I love that, you know, those those those qualities of
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the characters. Y Charis is a fool, but with within
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: a cost in Motherland for Salem, getting in there and
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: having to really dig deep and find those places when
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: I didn't think I had the strength, when I didn't
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: think I had the power, um, and still figuring out
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: how to be compassionate while being a drill sergeant of sorts.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: You know, I'm like a female Wesley's Nights in that thing.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: It's really really dope. It's really cool because because you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I saw like three and they sent me the official trailer,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: sound like like two or three more trailers because I
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: got excited when I saw that trailer. That was right,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: because the other trailers go back and so talk about
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: the history a little bit. The one that they put
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: out officially just talks about the immediate you know, the media,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: you guys being trained, You guys have these powers failing
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: and that's why I saw the vulnerability. But it's all
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: some good trailers out there that show how you guys
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: were creative, your your your past that made this opportunity
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: in the future. And so so what is exactly your
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Are you a lead or you are from a standpoint
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: of one of the people one of the drill sergeants
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: in there, because it's a military format, you're training as
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: soldiers to protect the world, but you have these special powers.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: What is your power? I am drill sergeant Anacostia quartermain,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: and I am the main person that teaches all of
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: the new recruits. All of the young ladies who are
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: involved in the draft have to come through me at
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: some point to make sure that they are ready for life,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: death and war. Period point blanket. In the midst of that,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: they're learning how to harness if they even know what
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: their powers are, their specific power, while understanding how to
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: do all of these other things that will help them
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: in the warcraft. So I do everything. There are seers,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: there are nowhere's there are healers. Anacostia does everything. That's
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: why I have to be a drill sergeant. I have
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: to be able to help them learn how to tap
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: into that in your life. Oh absolutely, I'm everyone. Yes,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Anacosta is not about that your breakout, so no good will.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I can't compete. I barely hating what you're talking. Now.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I'm telling to these talent of the people coming on
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: my show, just gonna bust out on a note. You know,
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: I'm going like I put her headphone, but she actually
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: singing that that wasn't bad. That was bad. That was bad.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: Don't you do me like that? Now? This this when
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: you when you see a show like this and you
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: see how marvel in d C. I say, DC as
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: well has slip the script on women empowering women. Do
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: you feel good about it? Is this the right time
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: to present a series like that to America without a question,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: without questions? And you know, you mentioned Marvel and you
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: and you mentioned um d C. But you know it's
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: free form is part of the umbrella that is Disney. Yes, absolutely,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: Disney has also brought us Mulan like there there's been
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: a lot of this that's kind of been there. But
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: I think that the timing is so necessary because of
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: the temperature that's going on in our in our culture,
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: in our sitting in our country, you know, where we
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: have to band together and we have to show the
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: strength everybody's been talking about, you know, equality and women's
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: rights and done it up, but this is really really
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: harnessing it. And all right is to be vulnerable while
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: we're strong, all right. Is to be pure while we're sensual,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: all right, And we have so many different rights. And
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the thing is, while we're showing all of these strengths
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: of womanhood and hear me, roar and all of that
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: other stuff, we're also bringing the men in and we're
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: showing their strength in a different way. It's really really
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: quite beautiful the way that Elliott Lawrence, the creator of
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: this show What's Up man Um has has kind of
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: orchestrated this thing like he's just the house of pain.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: So naturally you are. You do have comic comedy chops. Okay,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: we're gonna go on our next week. I want to
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: bring up there the return of the House of Pain,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: and I want to talk about more about the Saints
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: and Centers and House Divided because and also we're gonna
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: recap more about the Motherland, which is to show us
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: premier and Wednesday March. But the thing I just want
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: to commend you on your You are articulate from from
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: from the standpoint of a from a from a motivational
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: speaker standpoint. Do you do many speeching speaking engagements. I
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: love to talk to young ladies, especially on African American ladies,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: to let them know the power they possess, like I
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: absolutely like and you can do it. You gotta, you gotta,

- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Conversations dot com. I just ra Sean McDonald. I'm with
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: the talented Dmitru McKinney. Um. She's a singer stage television
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: and I love when we started talking about hassle pain,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: you said, Mr Perry, Why why did you not say
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: just Tyler Perry? Why did you say Mr Perry. It's
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: just just the relationship, the reverence of the mentoring. It's
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: a combination of things, the mentoring, the respect um, the
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: realization that he has earned a lot of respect and
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: sometimes he doesn't always get it. So every chance I
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: get to say thank you, even if it is with
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: just a Mr Perry, or if it is you know,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: people asking my story and saying hey, it started with
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Mr Perry. It continues. You know. I've had these other
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: avenues and these other things, but I'll always be back home.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: So I'm just really thankful for me. So you're back home.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: I noticed the cast is pretty much back to Lance Groves,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: my girl. So I know Cassie Davis way back in
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: the day. She's crazy in the kind of way. Yeah,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: you absolutely can sing too. She can sing to uh,
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Levan Davis, Alan Paine's back, who am I missing? China McClean,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: d Shaw, Everybody's back, the Twins, Hayden and Jade in
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: their back like he brought in a puppy and everybody
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: and the shot in his new studios. Right. Yeah, So
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: when you got the call, you already got are three
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: shows happening out there, number four. That's a blessing. I'm
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: not teaching because of the fact that I always talk
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: about multiple streams of income on this show, and it
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: means being able. To me, you've been able to You're
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: doing it and right in front of us, in front
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: as far as an acting capacity, but on a television format,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: which is even more difficult. You can get away with
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: in the film. But to do what you're doing in
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: intelligence format, it's really slick. It's been, it's been different.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: It's been you know, And you say, be careful what
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: you asked where you might get it. I'm so grateful
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: to ask. So what that be is? You know, because
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I've had talented actresses and actors on the show like that.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: How do you how do you go through the process
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: of prepping for these scripts because they all each one
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: of those shows are different, very different. You have a sitcom,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: you have an action adventure in Motherland sitcoms, Tyler Perry Show,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: and then Satan Sentators that's like over the top drama,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: you know. And then a House Divided you play a villain,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: a niving character. You know. So those are four different. Okay,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: who am I talking to now? You know? Like I said,
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I you know, I think that. I think that because
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: I've always grown up kind of watching people. I'm gonna
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: people watch The Observer forever and I take no parents,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: not on your doll, got like nine people rushing to
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: the front um. But I've always kind of kept these
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: stories in the back of my head because I'm like,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I might be able to play that personally. You know,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: I'm sitting at the restaurant and people thinking, Oh, she's
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: looking at my food. Nope, why are you eating it?
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: He just broke up, he's with this person. Oh my gosh,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: it's a scandal. It work. You know, Like I'm thinking
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: of those things. So when I get an opportunity to
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: play each of these different people, I kind of already
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: know them. And then I'm building off of the foundation
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: of what I think they might represent in somebody else
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: that I've met. Okay, so these are all television opportunities
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: that I'm talking about talking about film. Where are we
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: at with that? I want to do that, um a
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: lot more. I've done a little bit of the big screen.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: But I'm having so much fun with the longevity that
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: comes with television series, Like you know, money management and
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: people don't know that wealth building and all of that stuff.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: People don't understand when you're an actor and you're not working. Yes,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: you get residuals, but they start to do in the
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: left and when you're out of a job, you're out
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: of a job. You an So, you know, I like
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: the longevity that comes with television shows, especially with the
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: blessings that I've had, you know, Saints and Centers. If
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: we come back to season five The House Divided, we
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: knocked out two seasons in one year, Motherland, we were
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: filming for six months in Vancouver, um and then how
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: the House of Pain like that just I don't even
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: need to say nothing about that one, you know. So
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: being able to really have that longevity, I am a
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: single mother and knowing where my next dime is coming
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: from has been very very important. But hallelujah, he's grown out.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: So I'm ready to spread my wings. Jesus A good word.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: You know. Can you cook? Or what are your balance? See?
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: Now why you got to custom me on? I got
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: to because I got to find a flaw. Okay, you've
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: not different characters and nothing. You can sing and you're tall,
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: so cooking you can't cook? No, I can make a
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: mean reservation. Whatever you want to go and problem my
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: son cook okay. And you you're not acting on this
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: no skill, no, okay, it ain't what you want. Burn
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: stuff yourself you want that, So that's not part of
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: the balance life now, I mean I can't. I just
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: don't like to, Okay, So make a mean reservation, mean reservation.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: I'll clean up, okay. So just we're just we're just
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: talking out to balance life portion. How about working out?
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Do you work out? I love to work out, okay,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: your stretcher, hot yoga or pilates, hot yoga, pilates, zoomba,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: I'll do weights like I like variety. Okay. Cool. So
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: that keeps you that kind of prepped you for Motherland Salem. Okay?
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: Was there a training period for you in that series.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: We were there a month early in training, and we're
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: using different kinds of weapons, you know, and and a
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: lot of the which things of old you know, you
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: saw Pippity Poppity book. They gotta stick. They got a
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: book they gotta you know, we're doing different things. The
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: weapons are different Pippity Puppity book, you know, like Cinderella,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Billy Poppins and stuff. You know your character, you know,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: so we're doing a lot of different stuff. But even
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: with that came a whole lot of physical training for
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: about a month before we even got started filming. In
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: that process, you know, did it anything that they did it?
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: You know, like did you ever hit the wall? Like? Wow,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: I didn't expect it to be this much physical training.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I don't think I hit a wall. I think I
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: woke up a couple of times with my left eye
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: very like shifted over there um And there were parts
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: of me that hurt that. I mean, I've been and
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: I was a basketball player, I ran track, you know,
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: I was always been very physical. But the physicality that
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: came with this, and not only that, the mental stretch
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: that I had to do because I'm completely outside of
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: my my comfort zone. And I'm doing this with five
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: other ladies, right, right, so we all had to be
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: on one of course. Oh yeah, we're in. It's still
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: a military thing, so there's still drills and there's still
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: ordered to this. Okay, cool, So let's we were We
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: know that's coming out of March A Teams as they released,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: they've been set for Tyler Perry's not yet, not yet,
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: there's still in. I'm pretty sure it's going to be.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: They're still in production. I've already I can get you
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: back for that. Oh yeah, let's go. Okay, cool. Now
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: let's talk about we we've mentioned the name of these
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: other two other series. Just give us more detail about
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: your character on Saintan Centers, which is own Bounced TV
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: sts the Centers, I play Miss Austin. She is no
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: longer Callaguae because she didn't divorce Myles. Y'all better keep up.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: And it comes on Sundays, right, it comes on I
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: believe Sundays because it's really highly rated. It's one of
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: the it's one of the highest rated shows they've got.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: But it's it's really cool because she in the world
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: of Centers, she is kind of the lamb, but She's
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: starting to come out of that a little bit. You know,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: if you get bit enough, you start to bite back
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: because you know you're at the mercy of writers. But
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: they're very smart. I've been blessed to work with some really,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: really smart writers. They don't allow us to be one
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: dimensional in any stretch of the imagine because you know,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: this series is very popular, you know, and it's from
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: our It's kind of like you know, we always asked for,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: you know, because I'm talking about I'm going to daytime
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: soap proper, you know, and it has that feel strong
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: nighttime so proper with everybody connecting the doctor really cool
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: and you're being a part of that. Now, what comes
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: with that is social media recognition? How how do you
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: how do you deal with at when people are recognizing
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: you in public? How do you post? Are you? Are
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: you very savvy as what you post on your social media?
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Talk about that. I recognize that social media is a window,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: and I can make that window dirty or I can
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: make it clean. So I want them to get the
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: best impression of who I am. I try to make
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: sure that I talk about my natural hair. I'm trying
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: to include things about my son. I love you boy, um,
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: you know, and then I try to make sure that
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: people understand the different work that I have going on.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: But I don't want to give away any teasers. And
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: I also understand the responsibility that comes with the kind
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: of platform that I have, right so when it comes
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: to posting, I'm very very particular, but fun with ok
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: let's talk about something that you popped up because it's
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: real big natural hair. Yeah, I mean, okay, what is it?
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: What are the it's I'm assuming naturally curly? Yes, okay,
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: And so are you tied to any brands? Are you
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: looking for any brands to tire your your look to
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: or you just say this is my style, I'm gonna promoted.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: I feel I'm blessed to have this skill set like
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: mine is that can to do so her she's big
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: into her natural you know, and always touching it and
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: everything here, I'll touching my ball and you know, that's
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: what I got to work by. I got it. I
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: had it back in the day from two girls. Did
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: you know me back then? You wouldn't. I was too
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: much trouble and so he don't be acting on wander.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: So the whole natural look that you why is it
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: so big. Nowadays, I think it's just for me and
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: I can only speak on my behalf. It was about
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: really embracing everything of me. You know, I didn't know
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: what my natural hair texture was. I didn't understand it,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: and once I got it, I didn't know what to
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: do with it. We was gonna fight forever um and
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: I've just gotten to a point where now I recognized that,
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: just like any other relationship, it's strengthened the relationship and
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: the time that I take for myself. You know, a
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: lot of naturals. I know you don't want to get
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: up that wash day is a food moisturizing and ceiling
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: can be a funky mess. You don't know which products
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: to you use, But use that time to just spend
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: with yourself, like, let that be your youth time. Especially
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: the single moms, the working moms that were just women
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: in general. A lot of times we don't take time
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: for ourselves, and with this, this was my time to
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: get to know me. Okay, cool, Let's let's deal with stereotypes. Okay, cool,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: Like complexion, generally your hair is straightened, Yeah, okay, cool?
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: Did you have to deal with that? Oh? Yeah, I
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: was very afraid especially with my industry. I didn't know
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: how the jobs were going to come once I started
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: to rock my fro. But now everybody wants me to
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: keep it like free form. I love them. I love them.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: They are so so so continued. They are adamant about
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: making sure that they include diversity and just inclusion general.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: And when I walked in with my fro for my audition,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: they were like, Anacostia has a fro, we would love
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: for you to keep your fro. And I absolutely adored that.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: So yeah, I didn't. I'm sure it was exciting to
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: hear based on the type of acting you have to
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: do in that military form, and if you would have
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: to straighten your hair would probably been a big problem. Man.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: I always wondered what I do if I the Gt.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: Jane moment where they were like, you know, can you
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: shave your head? Let's go pray you wouldn't do it.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Let's checks out there. It depends on
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: the checks. There's checks, and you know, I'm sure you
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: know zero's equal bald heads. That's right. I'm glad you
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: understand that. You see my head ball tied to this baldness. Okay,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: and just let you know that your ball got balled
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: for a reason. Okay, I used to have a barber
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: come by my house one day. I'm gonna go zero
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: you out. Now. One series we have not talked about
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: it is the U m c'siden talk about that. How
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: did you get started? And what season is it? We've
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: done two seasons already. Um. I played Carrissa. Carrissa, Carrissa,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. She comes from the wrong side of
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: the tracks, but she's always she was ray her parents,
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: her dad was had a habit. She's been with the Steelers,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: she's been with the robbers, She's been she is raised
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: in that life. And she's connected with this wealthy man
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: and somehow gotten his wife out of the way, and
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: now she had moved herself right on in and she's
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: freaking havoc every which way she goes. It's really, really,
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: um a fun departure from anything I've ever done, and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: I get to explore some facets that you know, it's
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: funny you step into these shoes, but you also have
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: to step into this mindset and when you get to
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: kind of feel the inner workings of somebody, you know,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: kind of maniacal, but saying at the same time, it's
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: different kind of feeling. She's fun. Well, all your characters
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: are fine. The thing that my biggest takeaway from you
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: here enjoying your life, the opportunity that are being presented
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: to you, and you're taking advantage of it. It doesn't
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: feel you know, we all know it's work. You know
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: you have to get up at a certain time. Yet
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: sometimes said hours run longer than what they should be,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: and sometimes there's conditions on what they should be. But
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: just about dealing with it and being a professional. It's
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: about maintaining relationships, I think and I feel you understand
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: the value of relationships. This whole business is relationships. It's
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: uh likability, and then it's talent. You know, your talent
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: can get you in the door. But if people like you,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: if people understand that you are a hard worker, if
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: people understand that you won't waste their time, you know,
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: and on the other end, you've got to be doing
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: your due diligence to do your savings. I'm teaching my
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: son about credit and what that means and how to
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: make sure that you're saving and getting your life together
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: so that should God say, you know what comes saying
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: up here, you're ready, you know, um, just really really
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: understanding the business of it, but also understanding the relationships
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: and the talent that comes with it. I'm talking to
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: Dmitria McKinney. She's the star of the new series. I'm saying,
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: star knows other people, but I'm interviewing you. So you
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: my star of the new series Motherland for Sailor. It's
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: said it's a it's a series of drama. When our
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: drama that said, let's just say action drama. Action drama
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: was said in an alternate America where which is? She said,
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: which a drill sergeant? Drill sergeant? Which right? And they
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: did their persecution over three years back. Couldn't they deal
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: with the US government to fight government? That's a government
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: to the government. Good know what? A little come out
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: somehow say, I tried, I said government. I can't believe
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: I said government, US government. Keep that in government. Understand
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: where I came from. And straightfre for and I ate
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: some good ma cheese. Okay, if you go to walburg
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: they remember men you they have good ma cheese. No,
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: they don't, just they do. If you go to Walburger
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: Burgers they have you can get goovernment cheese. Okay, right
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: up there for with your handburgers. Okay, let me just
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: say the cut. They deal with the U. S. Government
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: to fight for their country. As we wrap up, just
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: tell us about the series so we can drive people
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: there on March eighteenth, which is a Wednesday on Free Farm,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: which is a was a part of the parent company
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: of Disney ABC. That whole world out there, and Free
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Farm has delivered a lot of great shows and I've
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: watched them on the regular basis, so it's not a
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: network that I'm you know, not foreign too, So tell
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: us about the show as we go, come join us
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: on the trip that is Motherland. You get to experience
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: a whole new world. You get to experience and the
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: ups and downs are becoming a warrior, a witch, a woman.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: You know, there's a lot of different twists and turns.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: It's exciting us all get out and I'm on there,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I mean, come on, I'm on here, so come on
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: over free Form. And also I believe that there's a
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: connection to Hulu, So if you don't necessarily know how
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: to get to that, stay tuned and Hulu will be
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: releasing information for that as well, and then this summer
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: you'll be coming back to promote the returning to the house.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: I'm so proud of that train is my boy. So
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: I love to bring a p up here. Yeah, come on,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: and Cassie I had on the show last season, and
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: so I probably I might hate you to get as
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: many many many Davis. I know him, and so if
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I can get like four or five, but let's just
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: just make a fun, fun evening morning or even whatever
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: time I can get him up, let's better be ready.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: We're gonna be ready because because I can know how
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: to talk, I know I can hell you. And you
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: you actually with nine people up here, so I'm telling
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: you bringing up four, Well, you just trained me, you
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: just trained ready. Stay again. I want to thank you
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: for coming on my show. Money Making Conversation is a
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: show that I put together just to be able to
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: have nice interviews for talent like you to come on
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: the show. We talk about what your contributions are currently.
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: But there's a journey, and the journey people need to hear,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: and hopefully the stories that you've shared with my listeners
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: will allow them to see that she did it, and
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: she did she's doing it her way, and that she
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: didn't manipulate anything. She didn't. She didn't do anything that
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: made her feel uncomfortable to be successful. I want to
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: thank you for coming on my show. Thank you so

- 1:43:45Speaker 1: arm kid carry. Looks like Dad has the bags. Daughter
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: is bringing up the rear. Oh but the diaper bag
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere. Oh but mom
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for the toddler.
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: And now the eldest daughter, who looks to be about
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: nine or ten, has secured herself in the booster seat.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Dad zips the bad clothes and they're off. But looks
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup is still on
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: the roof of the car and there it goes. Oh,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: that's a shame that mug was a fan favorite. Don't

- 1:46:25Speaker 1: For the very first time, I'm gonna call him a
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: good friend because I like the way you're talking. I
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: like the way you eat, my man, Alexander Smalls right
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: there to be here. Well, how you doing, my friend,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: I'm very well, thank you thanks for having me. Well,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: you know on my show money Making Conversations we have,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the book. But I would like
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: to take people on the journey and how we got
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: to this book because you have a very interesting bio,
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: which is incredible. You know, you come from the low
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: Country are of South Carolina. Can you give us a
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: little bit of how you started in life and how
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: you arrived at this point. Well, you know, I was
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: very very fortunate with loved ones, uh, family and friends
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: surrounding me, and at an early age, I took to music.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: Music was how I expressed myself and how I realized
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: my own sort of artistic talents. Um. And then I
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: discovered that those same instincts translated into the kitchen and
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: I would spend time with with my mother. My most
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: favorite time was preparation for Sunday dinner on Saturday nights.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: It's the Sunday morning and uh. And I had an
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: uncle who was a chef and an aunt who was
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: a classical pianist, and they they shaped really my education
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: and my artistic expression. I could go to their house
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: and play the piano and get a cooking lesson. What
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: did the singing lesson come in? Did that part come in? Well,
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: you know, as a as a young boy, oddly enough,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I was fascinated by opera and opera singers and uh,
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: you know, some of us remember the Ed Sullivan shows.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: I remember it. I remember Hunting Ground Well Ed Sullivan
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: would have on opera singers Land Team Price, Marion Anderson
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: and Clyde Burned, Classgow pianist and uh and John Sutherland,
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: all these people, and I was fascinated by it. My
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: father had a fantastic tenor voice and I got a
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: little of that. And uh, you know I was in
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: the mirror trying to reenact all these people I saw
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: on television. And my uncle, who was a big opera
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: bove which was you know, my uncle moved back to
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: South Carolina. He was living in Harlem for years. Uh
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: too when I was born to be a part of
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: raising you know what they thought would be, you know,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: at a lawyer. But you know I had the other
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: plans right right right right right right love it, love it.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting because in my life, you
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: like I said, Uh, it's similar path, you know I was.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: I love musicals. I couldn't get enough of doors stay
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: growing up, you know, I just love it to death,
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: you know. And of course I was also when you
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: saw a black person on Ed suller Man, the neighborhood stopped. Okay,
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: the neighborhood. You remember what people used to say, a
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: black persons on TV, come on, come on that hurry up,
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: hurry up now. It was with the world, hurry up,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: because you know that said. Once that said was done,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: they were gone now and you don't know when the
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: next was gonna come on. You know. We grew up, right,
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: you know, we were you know, Alexander, we grew up
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: when the when the TV went off, you know, when
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: the Stars Bango Banger came on. It was time to
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: go to bed, baby, It's time to go to bed,
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: to flag, it's on TV. Time to go, John, come up.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: But that was a great life because creatively, all we
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: had to do, you know, I was just think about
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: what was being offered to you. And that's what that's
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: a story. Like you know, my in in middle school,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: I was a first chair of B flat clarinetis clarinet player,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: and then I moved over to tenor saxophone, the alto
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: saxophone and UH. And then in high school I walked
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: away from it and I just the one that I
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: just something. But you kept your crab moving along. And
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: that's why I said, that's a that's a blessing because
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: of the fact that we are here today to talk
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: about all the talent did you on all the experiences,
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: like you said, you travel worldwide? Talk about uh in
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: developing these various this is not your first cookbook and
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: all these various rest this third one because you just
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: run a twenty eight teen James Beard Award correctly last
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: book between Holland and Heaven. Yes, and it was a celebration,
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: celebration of the food of the opaspora on five continents. Now, now,
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: would that being said, would you call yourself a foodie
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: or person who just enjoys food? You know, which is
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: a difference, you know, Okay, I'm gonna have to be honest.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: I'm not sure what the food he is? You know,
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: I never and I have so many banners to wear.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: What what I am is? Um? And it changed over
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: the years because you know, basically I started out being
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: maybe what you call a foodie. Uh. And then I
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: became a creative actor and became a chef and restaurant
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: tour you know, I've had five restaurants, and you know
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: then uh, then I started to interpret or use food
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: to interpret heritage and legacy and where we came from,
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: our contribution. So you know, I'd have to say to
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: you that at this point in my life, I'm a
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: culinary activist. There you go. That's where I've graduated to.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: And and that's that's important because, like I said, you know,
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: this book, we're gonna get into it. You know, the
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: book we're talking about why he called the shows, meals, music,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: and muses recipes from my African American kitchen. Now let's
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: go back to a little bit about why why that
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: title for this particular book, Because, like I said, Ineen,
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: you won a James Beard Award for your previous cookbook
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: right then this book, So this is like back to
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: back now Okay, yeah, okay, because you know I want
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: this one to win some titles too. I'm gonna tell
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: you something. I'm telling some Alexander this may win it.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: This is a very good book. This is a very
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: good alone. I mean, this is a gorgeous book, and
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: like say something myself, but let's let's talk about who
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: wrote the book with you. It was Veronica Chambers. And
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I don't want to just be major powerhouse. I wanted to.
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: I'll be remiss if I don't let everybody know that
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: she was involved in this book. And she was. She
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: was also recipient involved in between having previous Absolutely this
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: person here. You know, if you don't know her history
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: as a writer, you know, you know she's she's an
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: amazing person. And they called her, uh just a just
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: a person who just writes and has the skill let
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: a crossover that has written books with Beyonce and so
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: many other people out there. And now she did the
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: previous book with you, correct, Yeah, the Treene Holloman Heaven.
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: And what I would say to you about Veronica Chambers
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: is that she has the ability to be a non
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: intrusive writer. She has the ability to keep your voice
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: intact and your writings intact, and she she she cradles
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: it and she uh she sort of weaves uh an ambiance,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: her landscape around your words that that takes you and
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: then she pushes you and then she helps you see
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: how in places to expand the narrative and to be
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: more inclusive. I mean, she is a brilliant soul herself,
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: and it's been a pleasure to do these two books
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: with her. Congratulations again on that because of the fact
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: that you want to James Beard Award for that Harland
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: and Heaven book that she did, what you and then
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: she's worked with Michael Strayan on his book, Robin Roberts
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: on her book Beyonce. It's so many, uh Cecilia Cruise
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: on her book. It's so many, it's so many. It's
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: it's it's a great history of if you if you
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: google her name, do it. Because of the fact that
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: the culture that she brings in her writing style to
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: after the African American culture, I think it's really important
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: because we need writers like that, very important. You know.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: What I would also say is, I mean, you know,
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: writing these books, creating any kind of work of excellence,
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: you need a good recipe, yes, And along with a
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: good recipe, you need excellent ingredients. And that's what I
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: feel I had on this book. I mean, you know,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: I had some extraordinary people part of my team, uh
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: to uh Veronica who headed that to make sure that
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: it came to life in this Okay, cool, I'm talking
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: to Alexandra Small's his book Meals Music and music recipes
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: from my African American Kitchen. Okay, more than seventy five
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: creole and low country recipes are in this book. Now,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: this book is an interesting book because it has that
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: musical flavor in it, you know. And what I did
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: was I went to each chapter and I started, you know,
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: because I don't want to give away the entire book,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: but I did select some some of my favorites from
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: each chapter because the pages of the they're folded. Okay,
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: so we're gonna go to the first chapter, which is
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: the starters chapter, and I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: try to make this this weekend. Carolina bourbon, barbecue, shrump
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: and oakrah skewers. Yes, you're in part of treat my friends.
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: And interestingly enough, in this chapter, which is called Jazz Jazz,
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: the the the that recipe is not only a wonderful starter,
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: but it's also a nice on trade. Yes it is.
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: And that's why I was kind of confused when I
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: saw a starters. I want this feels like a meal,
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: but nothing negative When I say that but it was
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: like in the in the pictures of the picture of
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: it is fantastic. By the way, like you said earlier,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: the photographs in the book, the storytelling of the artists
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: that you're featuring it to sell these chapter was really elegant.
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: It's really it's like you know, it's if it was
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: not a recipe book, Alexander, you could actually put this
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: on your table. And yes, so I do. I mean,
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: you know, that's the the whole idea is that you
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: should be able to eat with your eyes uh and
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: and and your senses as you read these recipes. I
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: always tell people a recipe uh essentially a way to
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: get to a destination. A recipe is a guide. You know,
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: you know that you are cooking when all of a
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: sudden you're making my dish and something says to you,
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: I need a little sentiment in that I need a
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: little and that you know, a little pitch of human
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: I know it's not here, but that's when you really
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: start to live a recipe and bring it to life. Well,
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: you know the thing about Joe book, this is what
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: I always tell people, because you know, I've been interviewing people,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: uh book and Cash Show. You know, Steve Harvey was
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: one of my talents, and they just talk showed we
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: did Morning Drive for sixteen years together and and on
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: my show. I've been doing this twenty seventeen. So I've
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: gotten to read a lot of cookbooks, Alexander. So it
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: has allowed me to understand what's a good book and
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: what's a book that. Okay, I don't know what they're
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: doing over there, but they just need to stop calling
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: the cookbook, recipe book whatever they they want to get.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: This is outstanding. This book is out standing. I'm gonna
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: tell you why because listen to this quick recipe. I'm
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: gonna give everybody before we go to break the Carolina
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: bourbon barbecue shrimping oakrook scures. This is quick right here.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: Six was the scures twelve medium ok, eighteen large trump
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: vegetable as salt and pepper, two cups of Carolina barbecue sauce,
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: and you tell everybody how to make it. Now, if
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: that's not gonna run you out of the kitchen, that
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: that's gonna keep in the kitchen. And that's what a
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: lot of recipe books do. They run you out because
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: you go, I can't do that, that's too hard because
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: the measurements get they get caught up into measurements and
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: the accuracy. This feels like I'm in the kitchen with
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: my mom, you know, because you if you're gonna kitch
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: your mom, if there are no such things as measuring cups,
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: it will confuse you because if it is a measuring cup,
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: you can't even read the numbers on the side anymore. Okay,
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: so she knows what the carter is, a half a
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: third and all that stuff. Uh, if you if you
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: don't know, if you don't believe it, work with her.
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: That's why it's hard to get recipes from elders, because
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: they just cook it. They just bake it, and we're
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: in there trying to go how much is that? Is
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: that a pitch? It's that pinched me? That's an eight?
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: Just grab some stuff and putting that boy going by
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: my business. That's what I felt your book was. I
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: felt your book was like usually going, you're out my way, y'all,
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: I'll just messing up my kitchen. I just see Alaxada
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: the coming to get well, y'all, just get out, just
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: get out of the kitchen. I got this. I don't
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: need to be an intimidating moment for you. You know,
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: the recipe is are meant to be used. Is not
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: just a book that you look at the nice pictures
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: and go oh how nice? Which I could make that? No,
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: you can make it. Yes and yes, and this is
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: what we've created here. Wow, and you created something specially.
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: We're gonna be right back from my man. I hope
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: you enjoying this because I'm enjoying because we're about to
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: get into some more recipes and go through each chapter
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: a little bit, just to give you a journey, because
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: each chapter has a story to tell as to why
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: he's doing it and how he's selling it. Also, more importantly,
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: he has a spiritual chapter and he has a gospel chapter,
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: and I want to know the difference between the two.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: Were right back with more money Making Conversations and my guests,

- 2:00:38Speaker 1: the show today. It's a new book out, and I'm
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: really excited about this book to share with my audience
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: because you know, everybody knows how I love food. Uh,
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: my birthday is tomorrow, so everybody knows I will be
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: eating Upper Storm desserts left and right, and I'll be
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: posting it all on my social media. This book right
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: here I want to post on my social media. It's
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: called Meals, Music and Music Recipes from my African American Kitchen.
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: This man is from the low Country of South Carolina.
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: His name is Alexandra Small. Now, when I keep saying
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: low country, what do you explain to everybody what I'm
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: talking about when I say low country, Alexander, The low
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: country is below sea level. Low country is something part
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: of South Carolina, the out of bank um out of
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: banks of Georgia. So you you down there in Gech Island.
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: There you go, and I mean good food, good people
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: down there. You know what I'm saying. It's a it's
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: a lot of water down there, so mosquitoes will kill you.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: I'm just going down there. You need to go down there. Brother,
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: If you've got problems with mosquitoes, you don't want to
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: go down to Charleston Low Country area. I'm just gonna
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: let you know about that right now. You know, oh,
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: you know what I'm talking about. You know what I'm
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: talking about. So so when I when I when I
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: go through this book and I started reading these various chapters,
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: let's talk about why you name each chapter where you
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: named it before we get into other recipes there. Alexander, Well,
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: that's that's that's a really question, my friend. Um, you know,
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: it's really about my life lens of musical discipline, you know,
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: and and certainly coming from a southern family. My mother
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: was episcopaling, but my father was Baptist, so you know,
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: Baptist one out. And you know, while mother was not, uh,
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: she would kind of roll our eyes when the folks
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: started shouting and carrying on. Um, she was respectful, Wasn't
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: that saying, so, you know in the South, I mean
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: you're there with the richness of music and and African
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: American music was foundational. Um I was the odd kid
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: who was seeing classical music and residing Shakespeare. Uh and
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: like where where did that boy come from? You know?
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: But you know it was part of my life. So
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: at this reason in my life, I like to say
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: I now have a view of life. Um. You know,
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: I have had several careers, pursued several interests and passions.
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: I've been very fortunate to indulge all of my passions
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: and joys and still doing so. But what really shaped
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: my life was food in music. And so how could
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: I bring those two things together in a way that
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: essentially shares with the world who I am and what
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: is important to me at the same time to share
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: my gifts and and uh give them a little great
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: you know, it's really it's special that you're saying it
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: that way, because when I think about let's talk about
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: the African American community, you know, music and food, you
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: know backyard you know, you know, whenever the food, what
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: happens when the food is really good, we start humming
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: saying no, no, no, We've seen well things when we're
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: making it, when we're eating it on. I mean, this
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: is Alexada Dad. We could be sitting down carrying on
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: the man. You know, you know backing up. You don't
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: tell about alexand all. This is dude backing up and
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: then coming forward. Just come on, no, you know this
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: is why they used to say no singing at the
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: tablet Stop that singing, boy, I'm singing at the table.
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: Good help it. You know you've been into one of
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: those butter milk biscuits or or or some fried chicken
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: or stop right there, stopping the dumpling and stop right there.
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: Alexander Fried, I looked at that picture fried that fried
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: chicken in the book here because see, I'm tell you man,
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: I love fried chickets. Never have done it right, never
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: have done it right. But I saw it this recipe.
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: I don't get it because you got buttermilk in there.
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: I saw that fellship. Okay, I was my favorite chapter.
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna go down to it right here because I
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: have because you're like what I told you. I went
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: through various through your whole book, and I went to
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: one chapter. It's one chapter, the Diva's chapter. That's okay,
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: that dishes meat and chicken. That chapter I pull about
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: six recipes from that chapter alone. There. Okay, Now, I
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: started with the Southern fried chicken that's on the page
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: one thirty one. So I'm ready for you. Man. What
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: you ain't gonna do is to my show and act
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: like I don't know what I'm talking about. That's the one, man,
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: that's the one with the picture. The chicken looks just
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: like Kutucky fried chicken. That looking at it. Look at
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: that look at it right there? You know that that
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: looks like the original reginal recipe. I'm telling you right there,
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: I'm so mad looking at this chicken right here because
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: it looks at Oh my goodness, I'm I'm sure he
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: thought I was lying, but I had to show him
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: the picture of that. That right that Southern fried chicken. Now,
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: I got me a master built you know, uh deep fryer.
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: So I already got that. And you said, Rashan, that's
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: what I'm I'm acting like. You're talking to me right
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: now with your book to two three pounds chicken to
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: uh of chicken cut it's eight pieces, two cups of
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: butter milk right there. I think that's the key, right, there,
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: there's two cups of butter milk, and you said, one
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: tablespoon of garlic powder, one tablespoon of onion powder, one
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: tablespoon of cayenne pepper. That's key right there. And then
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: you come back with the sweet paprika. And then you
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: gotta have that I'm saying. Then you gotta come up
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: with that salt and pepper. Gotta have that salt and
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: pepper right up in there. Then you came up with
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: the peanut all like I said, I'm good because I
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: got the master Bill d fry. I already got the
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: peanut all in that. Now here's the here's the question
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: I gotta ask you. When do you know that the
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: chicken's done? You know there's that Does it float to
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: the top or how do you that's the only one.
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: That's the only thing making me nervous right now, Alex,
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: and walk me through that last stage. Or I got
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: in in there. You said eight to ten minutes, turn
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: the pieces careful and fried to a golden brown. Usually
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: usually take five to six minutes. WHOA, because you know
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: I can't I can't buy it. No, chicken is not
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: always done. So that's just follows. But you know The
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: secret is to make sure that your oil is at
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: the right temperature. And yes, and seeing how you have
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: that fancy deep prior that's the temperature, because that's the key.
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: I mean, you know, you can tell people what to do,
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: but if they don't get that temperature right, it's gonna
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: be a man. That's right, that's right, that's right. It's
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: too high, the chicken will brown too bad, you know.
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: And if it's too low the oil it's gonna be
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: full of soggy oil. So you gotta get that right.
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: And then the instructions here will just move you right
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: through it. My man, you'll be you know what I
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: like about alexand he know, he knows I got the
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: vibe go on with him, you know, he know on
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: point I'm telling. I'm telling you something in this book.
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: You had a recipe for some I have not eaten
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: this as I was a teenager. Okay, pan fried rabbit,
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: come on that, just like chicken, come on that. You know,
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: you know you gotta have some rabbits. I mean, you know,
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: see my my, my, my father, and the and the
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: men of his brothers and my grandfather, they were hunter.
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: They had gone. See I saw the rabbits, and then
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: you follow that up with the venison, the marinated venison roast. Absolutely,
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: I have never ever even thought of eating something a
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: roast of venison. Man. Man, it's so good. But listen,
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: and it's it's it's uh. It doesn't have a lot
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: of fact. It's very lean and full of proteins. And
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: you know, I mean, the only way you mess it
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: up is you cook it too long, because it doesn't
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: have that that that running through it in that way.
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: So you have to really make sure that you and
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: it's it's best when it's medium as opposed to well done,
- 2:08:56Speaker 1: you know. I mean, it shocked me that people go
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: out here and all this money on the steak and
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: they killed the thing again. And I had to I
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: had to learn that too, because I was killing a
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: lot of steaks at one time in my life. You
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: gotta have a little pick. I mean, I was a
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: well done king. You but I was a well done king.
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: I walked into one of his restaurant. I said, I can't,
- 2:09:18Speaker 1: I can't let you do my meat like that, sir,
- 2:09:20Speaker 1: all right, right? He said, you just why are you
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: why are you eating eating it? I said, you wait
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: a minute now, now, the one thing you didn't mention,
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: which is a Carolina specialty. Uh. We are known to
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: this item, and that's the quail. Oh well, I'm not
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: trying to give away everything. I'm just gonna see all.
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: I'm just telling you that this book is great. I'm
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: just put this Roushan and Alexander's just having a conversation.
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: How I picked you some I mean some home runs
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: out of this book. And they're still grand slams left
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: in this book. Okay. Now, the interesting thing about is
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: that when you say quail, you say rabbit, you say venison.
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: I have not received a cookbook that had that in it.
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: And then you did a specially a contemporary one. Absolutely absolutely.
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: And then here's the thing that I loved. The deaf,
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: the bourbon praylin, candid big hand baby. Listen, now I
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: left that here. This is not very famous, am I
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: have to tell you? Um uh? When I years ago,
- 2:10:22Speaker 1: when I first started my career, before my first restaurant,
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: the New York Times did a special on me entertaining
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: at my house in the country. We're talking over twenty
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: five years ago, and the centerpiece of this article in
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: the New York Times, UH magazine was that bourbon praline Ham.
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: Now it's something I came up with and a company
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: with a black guy p and a Rubles salad. I needed.
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: I need a couple of stars because I wanted to
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: make sure when you get the opportunity to do something,
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: as you know for the New York Times, you need
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: to make sure they remember you. So that bourbon prailin
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: Ham that was coated, it looked like a candy apple
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: and it just glaze that and that became the signature piece.
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: Brian Gumbo used to uh request that ham every time
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: I do the Today Show. He wanted that ham on
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: that show. The same when he moved to see CBS,
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: the same thing and and and it's a killer ham.
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: My first cookbook, I made the mistake of leaving it out.
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: Oh you would have thought it was a revolution. And
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: I can't do it on purpose? Right, Well you like,
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: like I told you, I read your book. Now, Like
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: as you can see, I'm putting out some home rons
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: out of here. Now this is the country boy and me.
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: This is the country boy and meat. Okay. When I
- 2:11:52Speaker 1: saw the braids, ox tails would turn up to the Okrah, yeah,
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: everybody do Colled Green do must degree but turnips turnips.
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: What I will tell you as a child, I didn't
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: like colar green, only like turnip green. And I like
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: and this is something I don't know if you know
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: what polke salad is. Do you know what polk salad is?
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: Folk salad is like like a collard green or turnip
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: or or turnip green that grows wild. And it's a
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: wild green that we eat in the South. And my
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: mother was mixed uh the turnip greens with the polkes
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: uh salad um and and then roast the turnips and
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: lay them on top of the turnip greens my favorites.
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: So I did started eating colar greens really until I
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: was a dolt, and so I wanted to breathe back
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: that experience of the turnip greens and the ox tails
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: and okraft now uh. In all my travels throughout uh
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: well the world included South America. I end up in
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: Brazil at a luncheon at dear friends and what does
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: this housekeeper cooks make for us? Our tells with okra
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: and I'm like, here we are all over the world.
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: You know who we are? We eat yes, sir, yes, sir,
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: yes sir. And that's beautiful. Okay, now you know we've
- 2:13:27Speaker 1: talked about all this good food. Did I go to
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: the jukebox music chapter. That's your bread, biscuits and muffin
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: because you have it to yourself. My wife gets on
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: my nerve because you know, I'll tell her I want
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: to die. I still eat corn bread. I still eat
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: my I eat my bread. Now I'm a bread. I'm
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: gonna going to the grave eating bread. I'm especially corn.
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: I'm going to here comes here comes your magic elicture again. Buttermilk.
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: See if this man know what to do with buttermilk? See,
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: and this makes me so mad because buttermilk is hard
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: to find in the grocery store. They got it. It
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: makes me mad because I use buttermilk. See, I'm I'm
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: gonna tell you how country I am. I give me
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: a glass of buttermilk. Push sugar in that bad boy,
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: and I crumbled me up some corn bread in there,
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: and I'm set. I'm set. We used to call that
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: pole man alexand I am set. Listen, I know who
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: you are. I had my aunt who just to teach
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: me clos from piano, like she would burn the corn
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: bread the day old corn bread flying the toast to
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: put old burnt on it, crumbled up in a bowl,
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: pull out the butter milk and the sugar, just like
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: you said, feeling good. Feel I'm gonna tell you something.
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: It's a it's a deal about it. You calling my
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: house right now, Alexander. I will have some buttermilk in there,
- 2:14:52Speaker 1: and I'll make you feel at home because I crumble
- 2:14:55Speaker 1: me up some book you want. You want, you want
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: some corn bread and butter milk, and you're gonna say ask.
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: And we're sitting there from that fireplace, talk some stories,
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: and I'll be with my little brother. That's what I'd
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: be doing with you, but even my little brother. But
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: I want to go back because I jumped so far,
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: because I wanted to go back to the spiritual chapter,
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: which is Rice, and and then the gospel, which is
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: the field greens and green things. The reason I wanted
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: to go back there because one is called spiritual and
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: one is called gospel. And I wanted to before and
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: I asked that question earlier, and I want to make
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: sure before we in this interview, what is the difference
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: between spiritual and gospel? Okay, so spiritual Spiritual is your grains.
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: Spiritual is that foundation food. You know where I'm from,
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: right is king. If if my mother put down a
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: meal and decided while she was gonna do potatoes to
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: do something different, my father would get up from the
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: table until she had made the right and then you
- 2:15:53Speaker 1: come back. I don't go. How hungry he was. This
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: man had to have a right every day, twice a day.
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: He could be three time today, but he would trade
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: in the breakfast rights for grit. So these are these
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: are spiritual grains. You know, this is and and this
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: is also what we passed on. The grains are uh
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: the week. These are very important things to who we
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: are and a diet, so I made them spirituals Okay, yes, yes, yes,
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: how the gospel is the garden. I spent a lot
- 2:16:27Speaker 1: of time my grandfather, who was they referred to as
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: a city farmer, because once we moved the family from
- 2:16:34Speaker 1: south from Charleston, South Carolina to spotan berg Um, he
- 2:16:38Speaker 1: then made himself a garden in his backyard that was
- 2:16:41Speaker 1: about a half an acre. And in that garden is
- 2:16:47Speaker 1: where so much of my graening, uh, my maturity. Those
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: talks with Grandpa. I would work in a garden with him.
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: We would grow stup. This is the gospel you know.
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: I mean because what you have to understand about black
- 2:17:04Speaker 1: folks who who come from a legacy and heritage infladed
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: um uh and slavery. You know, um, they were very
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: spiritual because coming from Africa, there was a lot of
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: ritual which got translated into uh Christianity, but the practice
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: was still the same. I mean when when you when
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: you had the plant in the garden, you had a prayer.
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: You know, it was sacred before you killed that animal,
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: for for to feed your family, and that was the
- 2:17:40Speaker 1: only reason to kill an animal. There was a prayer.
- 2:17:44Speaker 1: So this is the gospel of who we are awesome
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: as beautiful stately you know on the spiritual See I
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: fell in love with Carolina Hopping Jims. Yeah, and so
- 2:17:59Speaker 1: you know because you know how yahs, you can't buy
- 2:18:01Speaker 1: in the restaurant. You can't get this a restaurant. When
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: I was living in Chicago during the Steve Harvard talk show,
- 2:18:06Speaker 1: there was a restaurant right across the street from Oprah
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: went for his old studio. On his on his menu
- 2:18:11Speaker 1: it had Hopping John's and I should get it all
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: the time. So when I saw this in your book,
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: I said, rice and peas, I gotta pull this out.
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: And then when I went to the Gospel, which is
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: the Field Greens and Green Things chapter, you don't know
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: how much I love sweet pickles. Sweet pickles is the
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: pickle for me. And you gotta sweet pickle potatoes out. Yeah?
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: Oh wait, I gotta be sweets. You know these Northerners
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: that'd be putting the old pickles in the potato pallet.
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: I can't stand it, you know, I gotta have sweet.
- 2:18:45Speaker 1: I'm talking to my man, Alexander Small. Hist books, Mills, music,
- 2:18:48Speaker 1: and muse recipes from my African American, from my African
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: American kitchen. See, I knew I was in love with
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: Alexander Small because he said one key thing in this
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: conversation when you were talking about his dad, he said
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: he'd have grit You have rice three times a day,
- 2:19:01Speaker 1: but he would trade out the rice for grits. I said,
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: my man right there, because Bro, I'm gonna just tell
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: you something. It's too Smalls. I am a great man. Yes,
- 2:19:15Speaker 1: I love missing because I'm telling something. Everybody needs to
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: understand this. Everybody can't make grits. No, this is people there.
- 2:19:24Speaker 1: So it starts with a good product. Everybody know what
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: good grit. So come on, they're so busy buying, you know,
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: the quick service grit and cooking in the microwave gret
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: You go to these restaurants, they're not serving you grits.
- 2:19:39Speaker 1: That's serving you invitation dum. There you go, there you go,
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: there you go. Now I'm a closing out with the
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: Serenades chapter. That's the cake, pies and pudding. Because you're
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: not a dessert guy. I'm a dessert guy. So everybody, Now,
- 2:19:51Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta let everybody cause IM tell you
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: I am Alexander, and we're gonna meet together. We're gonna
- 2:19:55Speaker 1: we're gonna definitely connect over it because I can tell
- 2:19:57Speaker 1: our relationship about energies right Always when we sit down
- 2:20:01Speaker 1: and eat any restaurant, I'm always aller my dessert. First.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna just let you know so you won't be shocked.
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: Oh I know, people like that'slutely absolutely absolutely absolutely, So
- 2:20:11Speaker 1: you're gonna go, oh yeah, ri Shan told me you're
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: gonna do this, go you know you so you wanna
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: be shocked? You and we're looking at me like I'm crazy. First,
- 2:20:19Speaker 1: I don't know people like you, dude, and then people
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: turn around me. He can't get ain't no way either
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: he makes me sick or whatever. Whatever, I'm gonna eat
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: my dessert. And then that because people all get stune,
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: they go, uh, do you want the meal? You want
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: the menu? Yes, sir, I want that too. I just
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: want my dessert first. So there were two desserts that
- 2:20:37Speaker 1: popped out. One was a classic that I looked at
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: it because I I, you're adding something a little bit
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: different than you're sweepertato pie. I think I'm gonna add
- 2:20:45Speaker 1: in mind because mine is good, Alexander, but I can
- 2:20:48Speaker 1: tell it's not like my mom's. And I looked at
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: your recipe. I go, he's adding, So I'm gonna try
- 2:20:57Speaker 1: your recipe and I think it's gonna be the magic
- 2:20:59Speaker 1: one because everything else in that book and just hearing
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: your personality, I think you're gonna bring me on home
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: with the right sweeper tat to Pope. And then then
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: he had the ice box lemon pie Broe. If you
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: know it's one of it's one of the things you know,
- 2:21:16Speaker 1: you know, when you're standing next to people and you
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: eat some good you just push them on the shoulder,
- 2:21:20Speaker 1: get out of here. You you're so stupid. You make
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: me sick. You know, obviously every negative thing to you, Alexander,
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: it is all love. You make me sick. You know
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: a food right, You're stupid. This is ridiculous what that
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: ice box will do for you. When I was a kid,
- 2:21:38Speaker 1: it's one of the first times I learned to make
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: and and my and I would make two, one for
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: the family and one for me, and that was my thing.
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: I would make those like and and. Interestingly, my mother
- 2:21:50Speaker 1: let me eat as much as I wanted to because
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: she knew that that would be that lemon redne Yes, sir, yes,
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: you eat too much of that. It's coming document you way,
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: Yes sir, yes, sir so so so stop at two
- 2:22:04Speaker 1: pieces at the time. Okay, this is this is an
- 2:22:07Speaker 1: amazing book, my friend. I hope you enjoyed the interview
- 2:22:10Speaker 1: Meals and Music and music Recipes from My African American
