- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:44in John Chapter 9, Jesus and his disciples come upon a man who
- 0:47was born blind. Listen to the question the
- 0:49disciples asked Jesus. They say, Rabbi, who send this
- 0:54man or his parents, that he would be born blind.
- 0:57The disciples recognize the brokenness in this man's life.
- 1:01This blindness is not right. Things are not as they ought to
- 1:04be. And knowing that the brokenness
- 1:06of this world is caused by the sin of man, they wonder whether
- 1:10this man's sin, or perhaps his parents sin, resulted in him
- 1:13being born blind. Jesus offers a gracious rebuke
- 1:16of their way of thinking. Listen to his response.
- 1:20It was neither that this man sinned nor his parents, but it
- 1:23was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
- 1:26Jesus is teaching his disciples a lesson on suffering and the
- 1:30sovereignty of God. Yes, we live in a broken, sin
- 1:34riddled world, a world full of disease and disability and
- 1:38death. But Even so, we live in a world
- 1:41where the gracious Almighty God of the universe is totally in
- 1:45control. And not just that, we live in a
- 1:48world where that same God is working all things together for
- 1:52His glory and for the good of those who love Him.
- 1:56And so Jesus can confidently say of this blind man that his
- 1:59blindness is not just a result of happenstance, nor is it a
- 2:02punishment placed on him or on his parents.
- 2:04Rather, this blindness is meant to demonstrate the glory and the
- 2:08power and the purposes of God. In this particular case.
- 2:12What that means for this blind man, that is how God uses it for
- 2:15His glory, is healing. Jesus spits in the dirt to make
- 2:19clay or mud and rubs it on his eyes, and he tells him to go to
- 2:23the pool of Siloam and to wash. And when the blind man returns,
- 2:26he can see. This miraculous work of healing
- 2:29demonstrates Jesus power, God's glory, and the reality that this
- 2:33man's blindness was purposeful. It was meaningful.
- 2:37But listen to this. Even if this man had not been
- 2:40healed by Jesus, the same reality is true.
- 2:44The suffering of God's people is never in vain.
- 2:47Think back to the Old Testament to the story of Job, how God
- 2:50allowed Job to experience terrible hardship at the hands
- 2:53of Satan in order for God to both bring glory to himself and
- 2:58for him to draw near to Job in his suffering.
- 3:01The Apostle Paul was no stranger to suffering.
- 3:03Read the New Testament. You'll find that he experienced
- 3:05shipwreck, snake bite, stoning, arrest, flogging, the whole 9
- 3:09yards. Listen to what the Apostle Paul
- 3:11says about suffering in 2nd Corinthians 417 and 18.
- 3:16For our momentary light affliction is producing for us
- 3:20an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we
- 3:24look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which
- 3:27are not seen. For the things which are seen or
- 3:29temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
- 3:33Do you hear that every bit of our pain, every bit of our
- 3:37suffering in this life is being used by God in our lives to
- 3:41produce something, to produce sanctification for us and to
- 3:46ultimately produce glory to God as that sanctification is put on
- 3:50display. In other words, when we allow
- 3:53Him to work in our lives, God will always use our suffering
- 3:57for our good and for His glory. He will always display His works
- 4:03through our suffering. So if you find yourself
- 4:07suffering hardship today, if you find yourself experiencing the
- 4:11effects of a broken world, hand your circumstances over to the
- 4:15Lord and allow Him to put the works of God on display in your
- 4:19life as He works through your pain.
