- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28When you're ready, let's dive into God's Word.
- 0:31Together at the end of Mark chapter 12,
- 0:46in the very last week of Jesus life, he teaches us a powerful
- 0:49lesson on generosity through the gift of a poor widow.
- 0:54Listen to these few verses with me.
- 0:56And he sat down opposite the treasury and began observing how
- 0:59the people were putting money into the treasury, and many rich
- 1:02people were putting in large sums.
- 1:05A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins which amount
- 1:10to a cent. Calling his disciples to him, he
- 1:13said to them, Truly, I say to you, This poor widow put in more
- 1:17than all the contributors to the treasury, for they all put in
- 1:21out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty, put in all
- 1:25she owned, all she had to live on.
- 1:28What a powerful lesson. Jesus sat down next to the
- 1:32treasury like he's like. He was observing the offering
- 1:34plate being passed around. He watched as many rich people
- 1:38came and put in large sums of money.
- 1:40Then this poor widow came and gave just two little copper
- 1:42coins, just one cent. This widow could not have
- 1:46afforded lunch with what she put into the treasury.
- 1:49And yet, when Jesus called his disciples to him to teach them,
- 1:53it was not the rich that he praised, but this widow.
- 1:56How could that be? The rich gave out of their
- 1:59abundance. They had much, and what they
- 2:02gave was a slice off the top of their profits.
- 2:05And he isn't condemning their gift here, only recognizing that
- 2:08they gave out of their surplus. This poor widow, though, she,
- 2:12she had no surplus, she had only need, she had only poverty.
- 2:15This was all she had, and yet she gave it to God.
- 2:20And here we gain some insight into the mind of God, especially
- 2:23with regard to generosity. It's not the dollar amount that
- 2:27God is interested in as we give. It's not the number of zeros on
- 2:31the end of our tithe check. It's not how much, but rather
- 2:35it's the heart with which we give.
- 2:37Are we putting all we have into God's hands or are we
- 2:40withholding from Him? Are we giving in faith,
- 2:43believing that He is the provider and will give us all we
- 2:46need? Or are we giving in fear and
- 2:49self protection, trying to make sure we always have enough?
- 2:53Allow your faith to grow today like that of the widow in this
- 2:56chapter. Believe that God will supply all
- 2:59your needs. He can be trusted with all that
- 3:01you have.
