- 0:37Hello Travelers and Monster Catchers abound.
- 0:39I'm Stelliferous and you've crash landed on
- 0:41the Monster Catchers journal podcast. Today we
- 0:44will be doing a continuation of last week's episode.
- 0:47Last week we talked about Kozunora. This week
- 0:51we're going to talk about how I was able to put
- 0:53Kozunora's soul back together after it had been
- 0:57fragmented. I never thought I'd find it there.
- 1:04The final and largest fragment of Kazunora's
- 1:07soul sealed away inside an enormous white sake
- 1:10jar buried deep beneath the old shrine ruins.
- 1:14Its porcelain body was cracked and veined with
- 1:16moss like time itself had tried to forget it,
- 1:20but the moment I brushed the dust from its rim,
- 1:24a warmth pulsed within me, faint but familiar,
- 1:29like Kazunora's breath against the glass of memory.
- 1:33I set the jar before me, lighting the soul candles
- 1:36around it, one for what was lost, one for what
- 1:43remained, and one for what could still be saved,
- 1:47the air thick, trembling with the sound, like
- 1:51wind moving through hollow bones. The shards
- 1:55of Casanora's spirit I had gathered over the
- 1:57last few weeks began to stir in their pouches,
- 2:01rattling against the wooden table, I whispered
- 2:03the invocation of reweaving, the same one I'd
- 2:08once used to mend the heart of a drowned wisp.
- 2:12By bone, by breath, by echoes gleam, return,
- 2:15old soul, from broken dream, mend what time could
- 2:18not erase, and take again your rightful place.
- 2:22The sake jar shuddered. White mist poured out,
- 2:26filling the air with the scent of plum and ash.
- 2:29Fragments rose, circling like firelight, and
- 2:33fireflies, made of memory. They merged slowly,
- 2:38painfully, into the swirling center above the
- 2:41jar. For a moment I saw Casanora's face take
- 2:44shape, ghostly and sorrowful, eyes glowing faint
- 2:47blue, but then cracks, spidered across the air.
- 2:53And the jar screamed. I steadied my hands, the
- 2:57last piece, the one I had kept close to my heart
- 3:00since the start, was still in my pocket, the
- 3:04smallest and yet the most stubborn, the memory
- 3:06of Kazunora's first laugh. I pressed it to my
- 3:09chest, whispered, You're not going, Kos. You
- 3:13never were. Then I placed it inside the mist.
- 3:17Like light exploded outward, blowing the candles
- 3:20out. When the glow faded, Kazunora was there.
- 3:23kneeling on the ground whole again. Its mask
- 3:26gleamed like polished ivory, and its spirit threads
- 3:30woven soft through the air like ribbons of smoke.
- 3:35Kazunori looked at me and spoke, voice quiet
- 3:39but clear. You found me, Monster Catcher. Even
- 3:43when I couldn't find myself, I smiled, tears
- 3:46cutting through the dust on my face. Welcome
- 3:48home, old friend. Outside the wind shifted, the
- 3:52shrine's bells chimed on their own, and somewhere
- 3:55in the dark the spirits that had once tormented
- 3:58this place finally fell. The place was no more
- 4:04a trap conceded by the evacuation. We both fell
- 4:11silent for a minute, and for a long while neither
- 4:15of us really spoke. The still air shimmered faintly
- 4:21from the ritual. Dust motes drifted through the
- 4:25pale light like tiny little spirits, unsure whether
- 4:28to rest or watch. Kazunori's forearm pulsed faintly,
- 4:33not entirely solid yet, but whole enough to breathe
- 4:36again. I reached out a hand slow and gentle so
- 4:40I wouldn't startle it. Kazunori said quietly,
- 4:43You don't have to wander anymore, come home with
- 4:45me." His glowing eyes blinked, soft blue fading
- 4:49into gold for a moment. Surprise, maybe? Then
- 4:53his head tilted, mask creaking like old porcelain.
- 4:57Home, it echoed. Voice like the wind in a hollow
- 5:00reed. I remember that word. You'll remember more,
- 5:04I promised. Bit by bit, we can start with something
- 5:08simple. I still have some glow tea back at the
- 5:12sanctuary. I told Kazunora. Kazunora's head tilted
- 5:20again, the one that hums when you stir it. That
- 5:25made me laugh, a real laugh, for the first time
- 5:28in a while. No, that's not the one. But it's
- 5:33okay, you'll remember. I packed the remaining
- 5:37candles and tucked the cracked sake jar into
- 5:40my satchel. It had served its purpose and deserved
- 5:44a place of honor now. When I turned back, Kazunora
- 5:47was waiting at the edge of the shrine steps,
- 5:50faint light curled around its shoulders like
- 5:52morning mist. The walk home was quiet, just the
- 5:56sound of leaves brushing and the faint hum of
- 5:59energy that followed in Kazunora's wake. When
- 6:02we reached the cab - or the - sorry, I was about
- 6:05to say cabin, but it's not a cabin, it's a -
- 6:08pyramid sanctuary house. But anyways, my pyramid
- 6:12sanctuary house, I lit the lanterns, soft orange
- 6:15against the blue of night, and set the kettle
- 6:17over the fire. The tea glowed gently in our cups,
- 6:22golden green, pulsing with that same rhythm as
- 6:26a heartbeat. Kazunora held the cup delicately,
- 6:28steam curling around its mask. It's warm, it
- 6:32said, almost in wonder. It always was, I replied.
- 6:36We sat there for a long time, saying nothing
- 6:39more. Outside the forest was calm. The other
- 6:42monsters, my companions, kept their distance.
- 6:45Sensing something sacred in there, Kazunora was
- 6:50home. Night settled in over my sanctuary house.
- 6:57The windows casting starlight like spilled silver.
- 7:02Gozanora sat across from me, finishing the last
- 7:06of the glow tea. Its porcelain mask caught the
- 7:09firelight, soft, gold reflections flickering
- 7:13across the cracks. The other monsters lingered
- 7:17at the edge of the room. Luma Pup's ears twitched
- 7:20nervously. Shadow Claw slinked closer to the
- 7:23shadows than usual, and Reaper Fish floated just
- 7:26above the floor. Eyes glinting like tiny moons.
- 7:30None of them had ever seen Kazunoro whole before.
- 7:35Even Orobeek watched from my shoulder. Kazunoro
- 7:39noticed them, too. Its voice was quiet, hesitant.
- 7:43They watched me. They're curious, I said, reaching
- 7:47out to rest a hand on the table, and a little
- 7:49cautious. And a little cautious. You've been
- 7:53gone a long time. They just want to make sure
- 7:56you're okay." Casanora's mask tilted, a gesture
- 8:00almost like a shrug. I think I am for now. It
- 8:04was the first time I'd heard it say, for now.
- 8:07The words trembled on its lips, or maybe in its
- 8:11voice itself, like a note held too long in the
- 8:17wind. I realized the pieces of its soul. that
- 8:21had been returned were still fragile, still cautious
- 8:24of the world. I suggested we try something gentle.
- 8:29Want to see your room? I ask. I've kept it heat
- 8:32-ready, just in case you ever came back. Cosinor
- 8:36hesitated, then followed its steps for careful,
- 8:39each footfall quiet on the wooden floor. When
- 8:43we reached the small room, I opened the curtains,
- 8:46moonlight spilled across the bed, and the little
- 8:48shelf I'd set up with tiny trinkets, soft glowing
- 8:51stones, and a few of its favorite objects I'd
- 8:55found along the way. Casanova's eyes softened.
- 8:58You remembered, it whispered. Of course I said,
- 9:00I never forget. It climbed onto the bed and curled
- 9:06slightly, porcelain hands wrapped around itself
- 9:09as if it could hold together all its fragments
- 9:12with its own warmth. The other monster stayed
- 9:16just outside the doorway watching quietly, almost
- 9:19reverent. Even Shadowclaw settled on the floor,
- 9:23its tails curling around itself, sensing the
- 9:26gravity of the moment. I sat by the bed and offered
- 9:29my hand. Kazunora rested one fragile glowing
- 9:32finger against mine. For a long while, we simply
- 9:35sat there, letting the quiet wrap around us like
- 9:38a soft cloak. I feel like I could sleep, Kazunora
- 9:42finally said. Then sleep, I whispered. Tomorrow
- 9:45we'll figure out everything else. Tonight, just
- 9:48rest. You're home now. And for the first time
- 9:51since its soul had shattered, Casanora's glow
- 9:54softened, steady and gentle like the slow pulse
- 9:57of a living star finally at peace. Outside, the
- 10:00wind whispered through the trees, and somewhere
- 10:03deep in the forest, the night monsters hummed
- 10:05softly, as if welcoming it back. I woke before
- 10:13dawn to the faint hum of Casanora's glow, soft
- 10:16and steady in the dim light. I had just poured
- 10:19a fresh cup of glow tea when there was a sharp
- 10:23knock at the door. So hard it made the walls
- 10:26vibrate. Stella Ferris? My mother's voice snapped
- 10:29through the wood. Open this door now! My heart
- 10:32jumped. I didn't expect anyone, certainly not
- 10:34them, not here. I hesitated, then opened the
- 10:37door to find both my parents standing on the
- 10:39porch, their faces tight with anger. They weren't
- 10:41smiling, weren't the gentle caretakers I knew.
- 10:44Their eyes were hard, stormy. Mom? Dad?" I said
- 10:48cautiously. What's wrong? My father's voice was
- 10:53low and dangerous. Do you have any idea what
- 10:57you've brought into this house? I glanced behind
- 11:00me at Kazunora, who had sensed the tension immediately.
- 11:02The glyphs glowed dim slightly, and it shrank
- 11:05back, curling near the far corner. I swallowed.
- 11:11Kazunora is—he's—she's—I stumbled. She's my friend.
- 11:16I found her. I put her soul back together. My
- 11:20mother's face darkened and she stepped closer.
- 11:24Stella Ferris, that friend is no ordinary monster.
- 11:28He, she is your sister. I froze. My sister? That
- 11:33didn't make sense. I had no older sister. What
- 11:36were they, what were they talking about? What
- 11:39are you talking about? I whispered, voice trembling.
- 11:44My father's jaw tightened. Years ago, she was
- 11:47turned into a glyph. Her memory was wiped, her
- 11:50soul scattered into fragments. We've searched
- 11:53for her ever since that day. She, Kazunora, was
- 11:58never meant to be found by anyone, least of all
- 12:01you. Kazunora tilted his head as if it understood
- 12:06the words, even if it couldn't fully grasp them.
- 12:10Soft glow flickered, a pulse of confusion and
- 12:13fear. You brought her into your home," my mother
- 12:16continued, her voice sharp with worry. You've
- 12:18made her vulnerable. You don't know what it means
- 12:21to touch the soul of a glyph. You don't know
- 12:23the dangers. I shook my head, panic rising. I
- 12:26didn't know. I didn't. She's been hurt. But she's
- 12:30alive, her soul, her memory, she needed me. My
- 12:34father's eyes softened just a fraction. Stella
- 12:36Ferris, we know you meant well. But this isn't
- 12:40a child's game. Kazunori, your sister, could
- 12:43be heard again. The forces that made her a glyph
- 12:46are still out there, and now they'll know she's
- 12:49been found. Kazunori's glow shivered, almost
- 12:54like a heartbeat shuddering. Then it lifted its
- 12:56mask slightly and whispered, voice fragile. Sister?
- 13:01The word hung in the air like a spell. My chest
- 13:04tightened. I had spent weeks caring for it, watching
- 13:07it struggle to peace. itself back together, and
- 13:11now I understood why. Some of the flickers in
- 13:14its memory had felt familiar, like home, like
- 13:17family. I knelt in front of Kazunora. Yes, you're
- 13:22my sister, and I don't care what anyone says.
- 13:24You're staying with me. You're home now. My parents
- 13:27exchanged a tense glance. My mother sighed softer
- 13:30this time, though worry still etched her features.
- 13:34If you're going to keep her here, Stella Ferris,
- 13:37then we'll have to prepare. You must understand
- 13:40what this means. There are things you don't know,
- 13:43things you'll have to face together. Cosinora's
- 13:46glow steadied, pulsing stronger now, and it whispered
- 13:50again, together then. For the first time I saw
- 13:53its spirit, not as a broken down piece of a fragment,
- 14:02but as something that could fight, remember and
- 14:05live. My sister was back, and we had to face
- 14:08the storm that had hidden her for so long. After
- 14:15what felt like an eternity, my parents finally
- 14:17stepped inside. My mother's hands shook slightly
- 14:19as she clasped them together, and my father's
- 14:23eyes stayed fixed on Kazunora. My sister, glowing
- 14:26faintly in the corner, said my father said voice
- 14:34heavy. There are things you need to know, things
- 14:36about her, about all of this. I obeyed, heart
- 14:40hammering, Kazunora stayed close, almost instinctively
- 14:43pressing a hand, or what passed for a hand, against
- 14:50mine, its glow pulsed, small but steady. My mother
- 14:55took a deep breath. Before you were born, your
- 14:58sister, your older sister, was like you, a child
- 15:01of magic, of blood tied to the glyph line. But
- 15:04she was curious, brave and stubborn beyond measure.
- 15:07One day she discovered the wrong artifact, a
- 15:10relic meant to trap and fragment a soul. Cosinora
- 15:15tilted its head, slightly faint recognition flickering
- 15:17in its glow. It shattered her essence, my father
- 15:20continued. Her soul scattered into pieces, some
- 15:24were hidden by magic across this world, some
- 15:27were consumed by the glyph artifact itself. For
- 15:31memory was or her memory was wiped to protect
- 15:34her and to protect us. We tried everything to
- 15:37bring her back, but she became a glyph, an echo
- 15:40of herself. I felt tears prick my eyes, so all
- 15:44this time she's been trapped. Yes, my mother
- 15:47said softly, voice breaking, and the enemy that
- 15:50cursed her, the one who bound her soul, still
- 15:54exists. They are watching, waiting for a chance
- 15:59to finish what they started. That is why we are
- 16:02so angry by bringing her here. You've made her
- 16:05visible again, vulnerable. Casanova's glow flickered
- 16:09rapidly, pulsing with confusion, fear, and something
- 16:12else, memory. Its voice was barely audible. I
- 16:17remember fragments. Faces. Home. Those are your
- 16:24memories returning, I whispered. You're piecing
- 16:27yourself back together. You're alive. You're
- 16:29here. and will protect you, I promise. My father
- 16:34nodded, finally meeting my eyes. We will protect
- 16:37her. But this is only the beginning. Whoever
- 16:40cursed her will not rest. You need to be ready,
- 16:43Stella Faris, and she needs to learn to control
- 16:47the power inside her before they come for her
- 16:50again. I looked at Kazunora, whose glow had steadied
- 17:00warm, indetermined. I can't do it. I can't do
- 17:07this, it said. His voice wavered, but carried
- 17:10a new strength. I want to remember to fight with
- 17:14you. Then we start now, I said, together. We're
- 17:18not letting them take you again. Outside the
- 17:21wind howled like a warning, but inside the cabin,
- 17:25or, well, what I should say is my pyramid. shaped
- 17:29house, was quiet, filled only with the pulsing
- 17:35glow of a sister reclaimed, a family reunited,
- 17:39and the unspoken promise of battles yet to come.
- 17:49Even though Casanora was back with me, safe and
- 17:52whole, A shadow hung over us, my parents had
- 17:55explained the curse, the soul fragments, the
- 17:58enemy still out there. But there was one truth,
- 18:01they left me to process on my own, Cosinor would
- 18:06never be human again. The globe paused softly
- 18:09in my pyramid house that night. Almost mournful,
- 18:15I wanted to cry, to scream, to shake the world
- 18:17for being so cruel, but mostly I just sat there
- 18:20and held its hand. tracing the soft lines of
- 18:23porcelain and light. The next morning I couldn't
- 18:26help my anger boiled or bottled anymore. Or I
- 18:30couldn't keep my anger bottled anymore, not at
- 18:32my sister. Never her, but at Orion. He had known,
- 18:37he always knew, somehow he had known that Cosinora
- 18:40was more than a monster, more than a glyph. He
- 18:44had known that my sister... Was Kazunori and
- 18:49that she would never return to being human I
- 18:52stormed into his classroom without knocking the
- 18:54room froze students stared Orion looked up from
- 18:57his desk Calm as ever, but I didn't care about
- 19:00calm anymore Why didn't you tell me I demand
- 19:03it voice shaking? Why did you let me let her
- 19:06go through all the all of this without warning
- 19:09me you knew? Orion leaned back, expression unreadable.
- 19:13Stella Ferris, it wasn't my place. I had to make
- 19:16sure you were ready. That you could handle it,
- 19:19telling you too soon could have. Could have what?
- 19:22I snapped, stepping closer. Kept me from saving
- 19:25her? Kept me from finding her? She's my sister,
- 19:28Orion. My sister. And you. You just let me flounder
- 19:32in the dark while she... While she was broken.
- 19:39The classroom was silent except for the faint
- 19:43hum of energy. From Cosinor's glow that followed
- 19:46me everywhere, Orion's eyes softened slightly.
- 19:51"'I understand your anger,' he said quietly.
- 19:53"'But you've already done more than anyone else
- 19:56could have. You brought her back. You've given
- 19:59her a life she wouldn't have had otherwise. That
- 20:02matters more than what I will withheld.' I shook
- 20:06my head, tears threatening to spill. It still
- 20:09matters, Orion. I should have known. I should
- 20:13have had a chance to prepare. You could have
- 20:16trusted me." Orion sighed and finally stood,
- 20:19walking slowly towards me. Stella Ferris, sometimes
- 20:22even I have to weigh the cost of the truth. But
- 20:25I promise you this. Nothing I've done was meant
- 20:28to hurt you. Or you. We'll face this together.
- 20:33And I'll make sure you're never left in the dark
- 20:36again. I swallowed my frustration, but the anger
- 20:39didn't vanish completely. Not yet, Kazunora's
- 20:42soft glow seemed to pulse against my chest, like
- 20:48it knew I needed to be furious, that it was part
- 20:51of the process of accepting this new reality.
- 20:54I clenched my fist. Fine. But if I find out you
- 20:59ever keep something like this from me again,
- 21:01Orion, I won't forgive you so easily next time.
- 21:06weary smile. As calm and steady as always, I'll
- 21:13remember that. And just like that, the room settled.
- 21:16But inside me, a fire had been lit. One that
- 21:20would push me to protect Kazunora, to prepare
- 21:23for the battles ahead, and to never let anyone
- 21:25take my sister from me again. And that, my friends,
- 21:32is another episode. of the Monster Catchers Journal
- 21:36podcast. Thank you for listening.
