- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:44in Mark chapter 15 we are given the God breathed account of
- 0:47Jesus trial and execution through the human author.
- 0:51Mark, I want you to focus in on Jesus last few moments before he
- 0:55dies on the cross. Verses 37 and 38 say and Jesus
- 0:59uttered a loud cry and breathed his last and the veil of the
- 1:03temple was torn into from top to bottom.
- 1:07So at the moment of Jesus death the temple veil was torn into
- 1:10from top to bottom. What does that mean?
- 1:13Why is that significant? Well, the temple veil prescribed
- 1:17all the way back in Exodus when God gave the Israelites the plan
- 1:20for the Tabernacle, was a massive curtain that separated
- 1:24the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple.
- 1:27And when I say massive, it's estimated that the veil of the
- 1:29temple in Jerusalem was 60 feet long, 30 feet wide, and about
- 1:34four inches thick. That's about 6 stories tall and
- 1:38made with fabric that was thicker than a piece of 4 by 4
- 1:41lumber. It's enormous.
- 1:43But why does the ripping of this giant veil have any importance
- 1:46in the account of Jesus death? This veil separated the Holy of
- 1:50Holies from the rest of the temple.
- 1:52The Holy of Holies was where the Ark of the Covenant was kept.
- 1:55This was the place that only the High Priest could enter, and he
- 1:58could do that only once a year and with great care.
- 2:01The Temple Holy of Holies represented the very presence of
- 2:04Almighty God, and the veil that partitioned it off was a clear,
- 2:08visible representation of the separation that existed between
- 2:12holy God and sinful man. And now, with the last breath of
- 2:17Jesus as the spotless Lamb of God is slain, that veil is torn.
- 2:23Not ripped down by man, not cut as an act of allegiance by His
- 2:27disciples, but torn from top to bottom.
- 2:31That veil that hung roughly 6 stories high was ripped from
- 2:34above. And don't miss the symbolism.
- 2:37When Christ died, His blood removed the separation between
- 2:40God and man. The sin that separated us from
- 2:43God could now be atoned for permanently by the blood of
- 2:47Jesus. And as as a result of that
- 2:49blood, we as the forgiven people of God can boldly approach the
- 2:53throne of grace. We can come to God not through a
- 2:56human priest continually making sacrifices on our behalf, but
- 3:00through our forever high Priest, Jesus Christ, who, Hebrews 912
- 3:05says, entered the holy place once for all, having obtained
- 3:08eternal redemption. And Hebrews 10/12 says he,
- 3:12having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at
- 3:17the right hand of God. Now as a result, Hebrews 10/19
- 3:20and 20 tells us since we have confidence to enter the Holy
- 3:24place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He
- 3:28inaugurated for us through the veil that is His flesh, Christ
- 3:33entered the Holy of Holies, atone for our sins once and for
- 3:37all, sat down at the right hand of the Father, and left the door
- 3:41open for us. And so now we can boldly
- 3:44approach the Father. Through Christ our High Priest,
- 3:47we can receive the new title given to us as believers, priest
- 3:51to God, all through the death and resurrection of the perfect
- 3:55sacrifice and the perfect High Priest, Jesus Christ.
