- 0:05Hey, hey, beautiful humans. And welcome back to another
- 0:08episode of Aligned and Thriving for Teachers.
- 0:11It's Mel here again. And today we're diving into
- 0:14another big one, something that's been bubbling inside me
- 0:18for a while. It's about passion, purpose, and
- 0:22product. 3 words that came into clear focus for me after the
- 0:27absolute chaos that once was COVID and that completely
- 0:31shifted how I see my life, my work, and even the way I show up
- 0:36in this world. And this one's part of
- 0:38storytelling, part pep talk, part soul check in.
- 0:42And I hope it meets you right where you are at the moment.
- 0:45So number one, I want to rewind with you back to the COVID
- 0:48years. So let's just go back for a
- 0:50second. When COVID hit and schools went
- 0:54remote, I'm not going to lie, I cried a lot.
- 0:59It wasn't just about the workload or the stress, although
- 1:02yes, both were extremely real. In my case, it was more the loss
- 1:08of connection. The classroom suddenly just
- 1:11didn't exist in the same way. And I thrive on personal
- 1:15connection, obviously. Hello.
- 1:17I mean, I'm talking to all of you and I could talk underwater.
- 1:20What do you do when those types of privileges are taken away
- 1:23from you? I realised just how much I
- 1:25needed that and I needed the daily rhythm, the space, those
- 1:30tiny little moments with the kids, even the hard ones where
- 1:34you felt sane, where you felt like you mattered.
- 1:38I remember coming back after lockdowns, after being off sick
- 1:41for an entire week and the kids would say, oh, we missed you,
- 1:46miss. Even the tricky ones would
- 1:48settle for a little bit, like they just felt safer with me
- 1:52back in the classroom. And it hit me, I'd been pouring
- 1:56so much into my job for years, running on empty half of the
- 2:01time, but deep down, this actually was my passion.
- 2:06And I knew that then. And it wasn't just my why, it
- 2:12was my passion. My passion to show up, to
- 2:15connect and to make a difference in the everyday mess of it all.
- 2:21So for me, and I'll do some more talking about throwbacks to
- 2:26COVID in some other later parts of the series, but I just wanted
- 2:31to basically name it up with you that I think through COVID, it
- 2:36became really clear to me that my passion is for teaching and
- 2:40for educating and for assisting other humans in that space, even
- 2:44if it is adults like you. But that is my passion and that
- 2:48is a part of my why because I love doing what I do.
- 2:52I love teaching kids. I love working with children.
- 2:55I love working with adults. I just love helping people.
- 2:59And what better way to do it than by being an educator?
- 3:03And COVID really made me appreciate my job and the
- 3:08privilege it was to be in a classroom because online
- 3:11learning was just not for me when it came to teaching kids
- 3:15through a screen. But as I said, we'll talk about
- 3:19that at a later date. But the number one thing is it's
- 3:22passion. And you've got to have some
- 3:24passion for this, otherwise it gets really difficult to sustain
- 3:29what you want to do. And I know I've talked to you
- 3:31all about remembering your why before, but part of its passion.
- 3:35So I really do have a passion for this.
- 3:38But #2 passion isn't always fireworks.
- 3:43So let me talk to you more about this idea of passion.
- 3:47We often think that it has to be this huge lightning bolt or
- 3:50creative explosion, but sometimes passion is quiet.
- 3:54It's that moment when you realise you actually missed the
- 3:57chaos of your own classroom, and I did.
- 4:01It's the fact that even though it's exhausting, you actually
- 4:06still care. Passion is what pulls you
- 4:09forward, even when things are tough.
- 4:13And again during COVID, I started reconnecting with that
- 4:16feeling. But something just shifted.
- 4:19I started asking can I still love teaching and put myself and
- 4:24my family 1st? And that's sort of where this
- 4:28journey for me really began. So #3 moving from passion to
- 4:33purpose. So out of that messy emotional
- 4:36space came my next step, which was purpose.
- 4:39And for me, purpose is where your passion touches other
- 4:43people. It's when you take what you love
- 4:46and you use it to serve not just your students, but yourself,
- 4:51your family, your wider community, just everyone.
- 4:54And that's when I started doing this work on my mindset, really
- 4:59putting myself first, not in a selfish way, but in a
- 5:03sustainable way. I realised that my purpose
- 5:07wasn't just about being in a classroom, it was about helping
- 5:10other teachers remember their worth too.
- 5:13To feel aligned, to thrive and not burnout like I almost did
- 5:18many times before. And that's where the idea of
- 5:22this podcast came from. That's where Aligned and
- 5:24Thriving was born from. Me moving from my passion to my
- 5:29purpose. And how could I make this go
- 5:32further? So you're thinking about that
- 5:34too. What is your passion?
- 5:36Why are we doing this? What is your purpose?
- 5:39What are we doing to keep moving each other forward?
- 5:44Then we get to the 4th part, which is like the product.
- 5:48So that became part of my alignment.
- 5:52It can feel a bit icky though to talk about the word product when
- 5:55you're a teacher. But hear me out.
- 5:58Product doesn't have to mean salesy or businessy.
- 6:03It just means taking your passion and purpose and putting
- 6:06it into something tangible. So that could be making a
- 6:10journal, creating a digital download.
- 6:14And this is where I do my little plug that if you haven't gone
- 6:17and had a look at my Teacherspayteachers page,
- 6:20aligned and Thriving for teachers there, there are some
- 6:22really good resources. There's a couple of freebies and
- 6:24then some other ones that you could buy and use yourself.
- 6:27And that's me trying to help you with your passion and your
- 6:31purpose and to help move you forward.
- 6:34You might create resources for other teachers too.
- 6:37You might create a podcast episode like I'm doing.
- 6:41You might write a book like I'm also doing, so surprised that's
- 6:46still underway. Or you might just create Canva
- 6:50templates and share them with other teachers.
- 6:52You're not reinventing the wheel.
- 6:53We're sharing, we're caring. It's all of the things.
- 6:56But you don't need to be an influencer or own a store.
- 7:00You just need to start with what lights you up and let it grow
- 7:04into something that you can share.
- 7:06I've seen many teachers that have gone through this process
- 7:10from their passion, their purpose, to a product, which was
- 7:14like presenting workshops around certain things to help support
- 7:20teachers with stress prevention and all of those things.
- 7:22You might do something like that, or you might just be the
- 7:26absolute best teacher that you can be because your product
- 7:29becomes your students, OK, because they are in your
- 7:32classroom space. So that's where we start.
- 7:35You have a passion for this job. You have a purpose and you know
- 7:40why you're turning up every day, and then your product is how you
- 7:44are showing up for your class and all of those things that you
- 7:47are doing in that space. So that's what we're doing.
- 7:52Honestly, this for me, my podcast has just all started
- 7:56from mindset journaling, creating some affirmations for
- 7:59myself, and now I've got a brand, I've got a message.
- 8:03It's just a product of my growth.
- 8:05And no, I'm actually not making any money on this podcast side
- 8:09of things. This is just me sharing my
- 8:12thoughts and opinions because I want to help others just like
- 8:15you. Honestly, it still blows my mind
- 8:17a little that I ended up with the confidence to progress this
- 8:22further. I mean, COVID was a little while
- 8:25ago, so it has taken a bit of time for me to get here, but
- 8:28we're here now. And that means that for you 2,
- 8:31that you're allowed to want more.
- 8:34So here's the thing. I wish someone else had told me
- 8:36during COVID that you're allowed to love teaching and still want
- 8:41more. You're allowed to put your
- 8:44family 1st. 110% even more, you're allowed to put your
- 8:51family 1st. And through COVID, that is
- 8:53something that I absolutely learned, but no one really named
- 8:57it up for me. But I had my kids at home with
- 8:59me, I had to focus on them and we wanted to keep everyone safe.
- 9:04But never in my life have I also felt so alone and stranded away
- 9:09from my family during those times of lockdown.
- 9:12And how much we needed, like the grandparents in our household,
- 9:17how much we needed to keep everyone safe and healthy, but
- 9:20how much we missed the privilege of being able to just get in the
- 9:23car and drive and go see them. So you're you were allowed and
- 9:27you still are allowed to put your family first.
- 9:30You're allowed to be more than just a teacher.
- 9:34OK, Remember I've talked about that in other episodes that you
- 9:37are more than just a teacher. You're a whole human.
- 9:39That's just one part of it. You're allowed to build
- 9:42something that lights you up, and you are absolutely allowed
- 9:45to shift, change and grow out of roles that you once felt like
- 9:49was your forever job. If you go all the way back to my
- 9:52introduction, I've gone through lots of that process.
- 9:56I really thought that I was going to be an assistant
- 9:59principal by this point in a particular school, but that
- 10:02wasn't meant to be. And I'm actually so much better
- 10:06off for it at this point in time.
- 10:08So you just never know. And you're allowed to have those
- 10:11choices because you're not failing, you're just evolving.
- 10:15And that all comes in time. So let me bring it all together
- 10:19for you. This is like your alignment
- 10:22flow. I want to call it your passion,
- 10:24your purpose, and your product. So your passion, what lights you
- 10:29up? What gives you energy?
- 10:32What would you miss when it's gone?
- 10:36That's what I really focused on during COVID.
- 10:39Those things that you missed when you didn't have that
- 10:41privilege. So what is your passion, your
- 10:45purpose, how you use that energy to help others, and what your
- 10:50work means beyond your task list?
- 10:54Then you've got your product. How are you going to bring it
- 10:57into this world? What you create or you offer
- 11:01from a place of being aligned, You can flow through this cycle
- 11:05over and over again in your life because every season might bring
- 11:09a new version for you. You might have to change and
- 11:12have a different passion. You might end up producing a
- 11:15different product. It's just part of the process.
- 11:21So if you're listening and thinking, Mel, I don't even know
- 11:24what my passion is anymore. Oh don't worry, I've got you.
- 11:27I've got some prompts to help you have a bit of a think and
- 11:30reconnect. So I want you to sit down with a
- 11:33journal if you've got one, if not, piece of paper, whatever
- 11:36goes, and think about these things.
- 11:39So #1 when do I feel most alive or lit up during the school day?
- 11:46Is it when you're planning lessons?
- 11:47Is it when you're having one on one chats with other staff or
- 11:50students? Or is it when you're doing those
- 11:53really fun creative activities? Have a think, brainstorm, jot it
- 11:58down then #2 what do people ask me for help or advice on?
- 12:06This is often a major clue into what your purpose is.
- 12:10What do people come to you for or ask you about?
- 12:13Like all of those things and #3 if I had one hour to work on
- 12:19something just for me, what would I do?
- 12:24And that is your soul asking to create.
- 12:27You don't need to quit your job or launch a business tomorrow.
- 12:30I'm not saying that. You just need to start listening
- 12:34to what your heart is whispering or guiding you to do.
- 12:38So if you have a think about those three questions that might
- 12:40help you think, what is my passion, What is my purpose and
- 12:46what is my product? And I'm not saying that you all
- 12:48need to go out and produce a product.
- 12:50Remember I said your product is starting off with your classroom
- 12:54and within that space. And then let's finish with this.
- 13:00Wherever you are right now, whether you're stressed,
- 13:04hopeful, stuck, inspired, just know this.
- 13:10You have something beautiful to offer.
- 13:13Your passion didn't disappear, it just got buried under all of
- 13:19your to do lists. You can create from your
- 13:22purpose, you can turn your story into your product, and you can
- 13:27do it in a way that feels good to you.
- 13:31Now, ignoring the fact that my daughter just popped in while I
- 13:35was trying to record, that was the little knock on the door.
- 13:38She's now gone. I want you to go back to
- 13:41focusing on you. OK?
- 13:44So I want you to take a deep breath.
- 13:47OK, so in for three and out for three.
- 13:56Now I want you to put your hand on your heart and say this with
- 13:59me. I am allowed to grow.
- 14:05I am allowed to create. I am allowed to be more than one
- 14:12thing. And keep telling yourself that,
- 14:16OK? Because you're not starting
- 14:18over, you're just returning to yourself.
- 14:23I want you to think about all of those things.
- 14:25And I know it's a lot, but it all has a reason to get you to
- 14:31stop and think and focus on you for a few minutes and think
- 14:35about what you might need to do moving forward.
- 14:39So if this episode stirred something in you, I'd love to
- 14:43hear about it. Feel free to DM me on Instagram
- 14:46at Aligned and Thriving Teachers or share your stories, even if
- 14:51you tag me in your stories too. And hey, if you've been dreaming
- 14:54about turning your own passion into a product, but you don't
- 14:57know where to start, reach out because I've got you back there
- 14:59too. And don't forget, if you want to
- 15:03have a look at some of my products that I've tried to
- 15:05produce to help you further and help guide you with your
- 15:09passion, purpose and product, I've also got some stuff to
- 15:12support you there in the Teacherspayteachers space, so
- 15:15the link will be in the show notes as well.
- 15:18But until next time, stay aligned, keep thriving and
- 15:23remember, you are allowed to want more.
- 15:26So until next time, bye guys.
