- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. It's Wednesday, May 7th, 2025. And here
- 0:20in Sacramento, it's shaping up to be a beautiful
- 0:23day. Sunny with a high around 81 degrees. Nice.
- 0:27A good day for it. Definitely. Quick look at
- 0:29the markets. The Dow closed yesterday at 482829
- 0:32.co and the S &P 500 ended at 5606 .91. Holding
- 0:38pretty steady then. Seems like it. So today we're
- 0:41going to do our deep dive connecting the dots
- 0:43on three. Uh, pretty significant tech stories
- 0:46that have been making some waves. Yeah, and try
- 0:48to figure out how they might actually, you know,
- 0:50impact everyday life. It's interesting how these
- 0:52different areas, app stores, self -driving cars,
- 0:55wearables, how they intersect sometimes. Exactly.
- 0:57Let's kick things off with Patreon and Apple.
- 1:00This could directly affect how you support creators
- 1:02online, especially on your iPhone or iPad. Right.
- 1:05So Patreon has rolled out an updated iOS app.
- 1:07And the big news is a new checkout method just
- 1:10for US users for now. And this new method...
- 1:12It basically lets people subscribe without going
- 1:15through Apple's standard in -app purchase system.
- 1:18That's the idea. It's designed to, well, get
- 1:20around that 30 % commission that Apple usually
- 1:22takes on digital goods sold through their app
- 1:24store. Which has been a huge sticking point for
- 1:26a long time. Remember back in 2024 when Apple
- 1:29basically forced Patreon to use that system?
- 1:32Oh yeah. That put creators in a really tough
- 1:35spot. Suddenly Apple's taking this big slice
- 1:37of their income so creators had to choose right
- 1:40either hike up their prices just for iOS users
- 1:43which isn't great for fans or just absorb that
- 1:4530 % hit themselves which hurts their bottom
- 1:47line or try and push everyone to subscribe through
- 1:51the web which let's be honest can be clunky on
- 1:53mobile definitely not ideal so this new option
- 1:56in the app it's a potential way for US fans signing
- 1:59up for new memberships to avoid that extra Apple
- 2:02fee okay new memberships is key there what about
- 2:05existing ones Doesn't seem to affect existing
- 2:07ones. No, and there's another catch It currently
- 2:10only works for creators using patreon's Subscription
- 2:14billing model, you know where you get charged
- 2:16on the anniversary of your signup date, right?
- 2:18Not the older ways some creators still use Exactly
- 2:21those legacy models like billing everyone on
- 2:24the first of the month or charging per creation
- 2:26They still can't take new signups directly through
- 2:29the iOS app using this new method So still some
- 2:32limitations are they planning to expand it patreon
- 2:34says they're working on it They want to enable
- 2:37alternative payments for one -time contributions
- 2:39in a future update. And interestingly, they've
- 2:42also paused that deadline they set. The November
- 2:452025 one? Yeah, the one to force all creators
- 2:48onto that subscription billing model. They've
- 2:51put it on hold, citing a recent court ruling.
- 2:53Ah, the legal angle. But Apple's fighting that,
- 2:56aren't they? Oh, absolutely. Apple has appealed
- 2:58that ruling. This whole thing is definitely not
- 3:00over. It's a, well, a legal battle that could
- 3:02really shape how app stores work moving forward.
- 3:05For you the listener, if you're in the US and
- 3:07support creators on Patreon via iOS, this could
- 3:10mean lower prices down the line. If the creator
- 3:13chooses to pass on those savings, yeah. Right.
- 3:15And for creators on that specific billing model,
- 3:19it's a more direct pipeline for iOS support.
- 3:22But if you're a creator on an older model, or
- 3:24a fan of one, It's more of a wait -and -see situation,
- 3:27but there's, you know, potential for change.
- 3:29It really shows that tension between the big
- 3:31platforms and the creators using them. Okay,
- 3:34definitely something to keep an eye on. Let's
- 3:36shift gears now to something more physical, self
- 3:39-driving cars. Amazon's company, Zooks. Right,
- 3:43Zooks. They've had a bit of a bump in the road,
- 3:46literally and figuratively. They paused their
- 3:49driverless operations and recalled all 270 of
- 3:52their robo -taxes. All of them. Wow! What happened?
- 3:55Is there a big accident? Thankfully, no injuries.
- 3:57There was a minor crash back on April 8th in
- 4:00Las Vegas. A Zooks vehicle, which was empty at
- 4:03the time, collided with a regular passenger car.
- 4:05Okay, minor, but still. Yeah. Enough for a full
- 4:08recall. What was the cause? Mechanical. Software.
- 4:11Yeah. According to Zoox, the issue is that the
- 4:13software might misinterpret what another vehicle
- 4:17is doing if it's approaching slowly and perpendicularly
- 4:19and then stops. So like someone inching out of
- 4:22a side street or driveway. Kind of, yeah. Especially
- 4:25at speeds over 40 Malavari, if another vehicle
- 4:29incrementally approaches, as they put it, the
- 4:32AI might not predict the stop correctly and could
- 4:34fail to avoid a crash. That sounds like a really
- 4:37tricky, nuanced situation for an AI to handle
- 4:40perfectly every time. It absolutely is. These
- 4:43edge cases are where the real challenges lie
- 4:46in autonomous driving. But they say they've developed
- 4:50a software update to fix this specific prediction
- 4:53issue. And they've rolled it out already? Yep,
- 4:55deployed it to the fleet, and they've reportedly
- 4:57resumed operations. It's a good reminder, though.
- 5:00that this technology is still very much in development,
- 5:03even with huge companies like Amazon backing
- 5:05it. For sure. And the whole sector is moving
- 5:07fast. You've got Waymo expanding, partnering
- 5:09with Toyota. Fizzle always talking about their
- 5:12robotaxi network. Right. And even Uber getting
- 5:14involved with partners like May Mobility and
- 5:16VW. It's heating up. But it's not all smooth
- 5:19sailing. Zuc's had that investigation before
- 5:21about sudden breaking, right? They did. And we've
- 5:24seen issues with other companies, too. Waymo's
- 5:27had incidents and crew, well, GM's crews had
- 5:30its share of problems before they paused things.
- 5:32So even if we aren't hopping in the zoogs here
- 5:34in Sacramento tomorrow, what's the takeaway for
- 5:37us? I think it just highlights how complex this
- 5:39is. Getting autonomous vehicles right requires
- 5:42immense testing, super reliable software, and
- 5:46learning from these kinds of incidents. It shows
- 5:48that even the big players are still figuring
- 5:50things out and safety has to be the absolute
- 5:53top priority as this tech evolves. Makes sense.
- 5:56Progress isn't always a straight line. especially
- 5:59here okay one more shift let's talk wearables
- 6:01specifically the apple watch sales seem to be
- 6:05slipping yeah that's what the latest numbers
- 6:07suggest counterpoint research reported a pretty
- 6:09significant drop 19 % globally in 2024 compared
- 6:13to the year before 19 % wow and that's the second
- 6:16year in a row second year running yes it's a
- 6:17noticeable trend so what's driving that decline
- 6:20people just aren't buying smart watches anymore
- 6:22Not necessarily. The main reason analysts are
- 6:24pointing to is, well, a lack of compelling new
- 6:27stuff from Apple in that period. The Series 10
- 6:31didn't bring huge must -have features, and importantly,
- 6:35they didn't release updated versions of the Apple
- 6:38Watch SE or the high -end Ultra model last year.
- 6:41Ah, so no refresh for the more affordable option
- 6:44or the top tier that probably stalled upgrades.
- 6:47Exactly. People looked at the new lineup and
- 6:49maybe didn't see enough reason to ditch their
- 6:52current watch. Was this drop felt everywhere?
- 6:55Pretty much worldwide, except, interestingly,
- 6:58India saw growth. But North America was the biggest
- 7:01factor in the global decline, making up over
- 7:03half of Apple's smartwatch shipments. So the
- 7:06slowdown was really significant here. Yeah. And
- 7:08it wasn't just one bad quarter. No. The report
- 7:10said Q4 2024 was the fifth straight quarter of
- 7:13declining Apple Watch sales year over year. Even
- 7:15the Ultra's market share dipped. You mentioned
- 7:17the lack of an SE update. That model always seemed
- 7:20like a big volume driver. It really is. The SE
- 7:23hits that sweet spot for price and features for
- 7:26a lot of people. The last one came out in 2022,
- 7:29so not having a new one in 2024 likely left a
- 7:33big hole in their sales figures. And didn't the
- 7:35Series 10 also have that issue with the blood
- 7:37oxygen sensor in the U .S. because of the legal
- 7:40spat? Yeah, that certainly didn't help. Having
- 7:42a key health feature removed, even temporarily,
- 7:45probably turned some potential upgraders off.
- 7:47So what's next? Is Apple planning anything to,
- 7:50you know, turn this around? Well, the rumor mill
- 7:53is turning, as always. We're expecting a Series
- 7:5511 around September, maybe some new health sensors,
- 7:59possibly even cameras, though the design might
- 8:01stay similar. Cameras on a watch? Yeah. Interesting.
- 8:04What about the other models? There are rumors
- 8:06of a potentially lower -cost SE, maybe with a
- 8:09plastic body to bring the price down further,
- 8:11and an updated Ultra perhaps adding satellite
- 8:13messaging like the iPhone has. Okay, so potential
- 8:15updates across the board, but it's striking that
- 8:18while Apple's sales dipped, their competitors
- 8:20actually grew. That's a key point. All the other
- 8:23major players in that advanced smartwatch space
- 8:26saw shipments go up. It suggests the market itself
- 8:29is still healthy, but maybe consumers are looking
- 8:32elsewhere for innovation or value right now.
- 8:34So for you, the listener, maybe you own an Apple
- 8:37Watch and haven't felt the need to upgrade lately.
- 8:39These numbers suggest you're not alone. Right.
- 8:42It seems like people are waiting for more significant
- 8:44leaps or perhaps better value. These rumors about
- 8:48new features and a cheaper SE could definitely
- 8:51shake things up later this year. It really underscores
- 8:54that even for a giant like Apple, you can't rest
- 8:57on your laurels. Continuous innovation matters,
- 8:59especially as competition heats up. OK, so let's
- 9:02quickly tie these three threads together. We
- 9:04talked about Patreon finding a way. for some
- 9:07users at least, around Apple's fees on iOS, fueled
- 9:10partly by that ongoing legal situation. Then
- 9:12we looked at Amazon's Zucs robo -taxes, the recall
- 9:15due to a specific software glitch, and the fix
- 9:18they've put in place. Highlighting the tricky
- 9:20path of autonomous vehicle development. And finally,
- 9:23the dip in Apple Watch sales for the second year,
- 9:26seemingly because of a lack of major updates
- 9:29in new models like the SE. showing how consumer
- 9:31expectations and competition are shaping the
- 9:34wearables market. What really connects these,
- 9:36I think, is just how fast everything keeps changing
- 9:39in tech. App Store rules, self -driving progress,
- 9:43what we expect from our gadgets. It's always
- 9:46evolving. Absolutely. Platform economics, transportation,
- 9:50personal tech. None of it stands still for long.
- 9:52So maybe a final thought for you to chew on.
- 9:54How might these shifts, the creator economy,
- 9:58the way we get around the tech we wear, how might
- 10:00they subtly, or maybe not so subtly, change your
- 10:03own routines in digital life in the near future?
- 10:06Yeah, it's worth thinking about how these ripples
- 10:08might eventually reach you. They often do. We
