- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 5, we're given a
- 0:45detailed account of Jesus calling Simon, who would be
- 0:48renamed Peter, to be his disciple.
- 0:50This story is wild. I want you to hear what unfolds
- 0:53straight from the text. And then I want us to see how
- 0:56Peter's call parallels Isaiah's call back in the Old Testament
- 1:00and provides for us a model of what it looks like to be changed
- 1:03by Jesus and commissioned into his service.
- 1:06So let's get to the text. This is Luke 5 verses one
- 1:09through 11. Now it happened that while the
- 1:11crowd was pressing around him and listening to the Word of
- 1:14God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two
- 1:17boats lying at the edge of the lake.
- 1:19But the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their
- 1:21Nets. And he got into one of the
- 1:23boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little
- 1:26way from the land. And he sat down and began
- 1:29teaching the people from the boat.
- 1:31When he'd finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the
- 1:34deep water and let down your Nets for a catch.
- 1:37Simon answered and said, Master, we worked hard all night and
- 1:41caught nothing, but I will do as you say and let down the Nets.
- 1:45When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of
- 1:47fish, and their Nets began to break.
- 1:50So they signaled to their partners in the other boat for
- 1:52them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of
- 1:55the boats, so that they began to sink.
- 1:58But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus feet,
- 2:01saying, Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.
- 2:05For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of
- 2:08the catch of fish which they had taken.
- 2:10And so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were
- 2:13partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not
- 2:17fear, from now on you will be catching men.
- 2:20When they had brought their boats to land, they left
- 2:21everything and followed him. Jesus instructs Peter to lower
- 2:25his Nets deeper. Peter, though respectful, is
- 2:28doubtful that anything different will happen.
- 2:31This experienced fisherman and his team have been fishing all
- 2:34night with no success. But Peter obeys.
- 2:37He drops the net and what happens is nothing short of
- 2:40miraculous. They catch so many fish that the
- 2:43Nets are about to break. They fill both boats with the
- 2:46catch to the point of sinking the boats.
- 2:49But watch Peter's response. He's not distracted by the
- 2:52biggest haul of fish of his life.
- 2:54He does not have dollar signs in his eyes at the money they'll be
- 2:57able to make selling this catch at market.
- 3:00He recognizes that the one who has the power and authority to
- 3:04direct a catch like this is from God.
- 3:08He falls down at Jesus feet and without a word about the fish he
- 3:11says go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.
- 3:15He acknowledges his sin. This holy man.
- 3:18Jesus has demonstrated who he is and the only thing that matters
- 3:22to Peter is that he is unworthy. He's too sinful to be in the
- 3:27presence of Jesus. But Jesus looks to Simon and
- 3:30does not shame him. Instead he invites him.
- 3:33He says do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.
- 3:38And Peter and his companions leave everything, boats, Nets,
- 3:41fish and follow Jesus. In Isaiah chapter 6 we see the
- 3:46call of God put on Isaiah the prophet.
- 3:49Isaiah finds himself looking into the throne room of God.
- 3:52He sees the train of God's robe filling the whole temple.
- 3:56He sees the Seraphim standing above the Lord and hears them
- 3:59calling out to one another of God's holiness and glory.
- 4:03He feels the thresholds shake as they call out to one another.
- 4:07He is witnessing a miracle in the presence of God.
- 4:10And Isaiah, like Peter, is led to 1.
- 4:13Conclusion. Listen to verse 5 of Isaiah
- 4:15chapter 6. Then I said, Woe is me, for I am
- 4:20ruined because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a
- 4:24people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the king, the
- 4:28Lord of hosts. Isaiah sees his sin.
- 4:33He acknowledges his unworthiness to stand up in the presence of
- 4:36this holy, holy, holy king. But then God makes a move.
- 4:42One of the seraphim flies to Isaiah and touches his mouth
- 4:45with a burning coal and pronounces him forgiven.
- 4:49And then immediately the Lord speaks, saying, Whom shall I
- 4:53send, and who will go for us? Without hesitation Isaiah
- 4:57answers the call, Here am I, send me.
- 5:01So we see this Old Testament prophet and this New Testament
- 5:05fishermen turned apostle, both finding themselves in the
- 5:08presence of God, both in agony at their own sin, both invited
- 5:14and commissioned by the Lord into faithful service.
- 5:17And so it is with us, friends. This is our story.
- 5:21Made aware of the greatness of God, His power, His glory, His
- 5:26Majesty, forced to reckon with our own sinfulness, our own
- 5:31fallenness and guilt before him, and then gloriously forgiven by
- 5:35the Holy One, And not just forgiven, but lifted up and sent
- 5:40out to do the work of our new Master.
- 5:42This is our salvation story and this is our daily posture,
- 5:47seeing His Holiness, seeing our sinfulness, and receiving His
- 5:52free offer of forgiveness through Christ and going out in
- 5:56boldness and joy to do the bidding of our King.
- 5:59Praise the Lord, Praise Him that He has shown Himself to us.
- 6:04Praise Him that He has shown us our sin.
- 6:06Praise Him that He has forgiven us, and praise Him that He has
- 6:09included us in His plan of redemption.
- 6:13Praise Him and respond like Simon Peter did.
- 6:17Leave everything and follow him.
