- 0:00Luke chapter 20, On one of the days while he was teaching the
- 0:03people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief
- 0:06priests and the scribes with the elders confronted him and they
- 0:09spoke saying to him, Tell us by what authority you are doing
- 0:12these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?
- 0:16Jesus answered and said to them, I will also ask you a question
- 0:19and you tell me, was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?
- 0:23They reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say from heaven,
- 0:27he will say, Why did you not believe him?
- 0:29But if we save from men, all the people will stone us to death,
- 0:32For they are convinced that John was a prophet.
- 0:35So they answered that they did not know where it came from.
- 0:38And Jesus said to them, Nor will I tell you by what authority I
- 0:41do these things. And he began to tell the people
- 0:44a parable. A man planted a vineyard and
- 0:46rented it out to vine growers and went on a journey for a long
- 0:49time. At the harvest time he sent a
- 0:51slave to the vine growers so that they would give him some of
- 0:54the produce of the vineyard. But the vine growers beat him
- 0:57and sent him away empty handed. And he proceeded to send another
- 1:00slave. And they beat him also and
- 1:02treated him shamefully and sent him away empty handed.
- 1:07And he proceeded to send a third, and this one also they
- 1:10wounded and cast out. The owner of the vineyard said,
- 1:12What shall I do? I will send my beloved son.
- 1:16Perhaps they will respect him. But when the vine growers saw
- 1:19him, they reasoned with one another, saying, this is the
- 1:22air, let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.
- 1:25So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
- 1:28What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
- 1:31He will come and destroy these vine growers, and will give the
- 1:33vineyard to others. When they heard it, they said,
- 1:36May it never be. But Jesus looked at them and
- 1:38said, What then is this that is written?
- 1:41The stone which the builders rejected.
- 1:43This became the chief cornerstone.
- 1:46Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on
- 1:49whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.
- 1:53The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on
- 1:55him that very hour, and they feared the people, for they
- 1:58understood that he spoke this parable against them.
- 2:01So they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be
- 2:03righteous in order that they might catch him in some
- 2:06statement so that they could deliver him to the rule and the
- 2:08authority of the governor. They questioned him, saying,
- 2:11Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you are
- 2:14not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.
- 2:18Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
- 2:22But he detected their trickery and said to them, Show me a
- 2:24denarius whose likeness and inscription does it have.
- 2:28They said Caesar's. And he said to them, Then render
- 2:32to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things
- 2:35that are gods. And they were unable to catch
- 2:39him in a saying in the presence of the people.
- 2:40And being amazed at his answer, they became silent.
- 2:44Now there came to him some of the Sadducees who say that there
- 2:46is no resurrection. And they questioned him, saying,
- 2:49Teacher Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies having a
- 2:53wife and he is childless, his brother should marry the wife
- 2:56and raise up children to his brother.
- 2:59Now there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife and
- 3:01died childless, and the second and the third married her.
- 3:04And in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.
- 3:08Finally the woman died also in the resurrection.
- 3:11Therefore, which one's wife will she be?
- 3:14For all seven had married her. Jesus said to them, The sons of
- 3:18this age marry and are given in marriage.
- 3:20But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and
- 3:24the resurrection from the dead, neither Mary nor are given in
- 3:27marriage. For they cannot even die
- 3:29anymore, because they are like angels and are sons of God,
- 3:32being sons of the resurrection, but that the dead are raised.
- 3:35Even Moses showed in the passage about the burning Bush, where he
- 3:40calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac,
- 3:42and the God of Jacob. Now he is not the God of the
- 3:45dead, but of the living, for all live to him.
- 3:48Some of the scribes answered and said, Teacher, you have spoken
- 3:51well, for they did not have the courage to question him any
- 3:54longer about anything. Then he said to them, How is it
- 3:58that they say the Christ is David's son?
- 4:01For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to
- 4:04my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a
- 4:07footstool for your feet. Therefore David calls him Lord,
- 4:11and how is he his son? And while all the people were
- 4:14listening, he said to the disciples, Beware of the scribes
- 4:18who like to walk around in long robes and love respectful
- 4:21greetings in the marketplaces and chief seats, in the
- 4:23synagogues and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows
- 4:27houses and for appearance's sake offer long prayers.
- 4:31These will receive greater condemnation.
