- 0:23Halloween. Hope you've got your costumes ready.
- 0:26Or at least your candy bowls filled. quick check

- 0:32sunny high around 78 Fahrenheit nice nationally
- 0:35though a bit more active pretty gusty winds hitting
- 0:38the mid -atlantic and northeast and keep an eye
- 0:40on the northwest later today And into Saturday
- 0:42looks like an atmospheric river setting up. Moderate
- 0:45to heavy rain, some mountain snow, and high surf
- 0:48expected there. Okay, turning to the markets.
- 0:50A bit of a mixed picture to end the week, but
- 0:52generally positive overall. Right. The Dow Jones
- 0:54closed at $47 ,580. That's down just a touch
- 0:57today, 0 .17%. But still up for the week about
- 1:010 .35%. Exactly. And the S &P 500 followed a
- 1:04similar pattern, closed at $6 ,867 .43. Also
- 1:09down slightly today point one seven percent,
- 1:11but up point three two percent for the week So
- 1:14holding steady mostly and Bitcoin always interesting
- 1:16to watch. Yeah, it's a nice little jump today
- 1:18actually up one point four one percent closing
- 1:21at a hundred and nine thousand eight hundred
- 1:22and sixteen point six six Hmm, but still down
- 1:25for the week overall still down for the week.
- 1:27Yeah about three point seven eight percent But
- 1:29you know that pop today is interesting shows.
- 1:32There's still appetite there. Definitely something
- 1:33to watch Now, before we dive into the tech news,

- 2:03.com. Okay, let's get into it. Time for our Morningstar
- 2:06report, today's top three tech stories and what
- 2:10they actually mean for you. Let's start with
- 2:12Amazon. Huge news out of their Q3 earnings. Huge
- 2:15is right. Shares surged, what, over 13 % after
- 2:19they just blew past expectations? Incredible
- 2:22jump. So what drove that? Let's break down the
- 2:24revenue streams. Well, a big piece was advertising
- 2:26services revenue. That jumped 24 % year over
- 2:29year. 24%. Yeah. to $17 .7 billion, beat the
- 2:35estimates of $17 .3 billion. And that's not just
- 2:37ads on the shopping site anymore, is it? Not
- 2:39at all. I mean, think about their reach. Over
- 2:41300 million global ad -supported viewers and
- 2:44listeners across Prime Video, Twitch, MGM, Wondry,
- 2:49Amazon Music. Wow. That's a massive audience.
- 2:52It really is. They're a major player competing
- 2:54directly with Google and Meta now. for those
- 2:57ad dollars. And subscription services, Prime
- 3:00and the like. Also strong, up 11 % year over
- 3:03year to $12 .6 billion. OK, and AWS. The cloud
- 3:07business is always key. Absolutely key. And it
- 3:09had its fastest growth pace since 2022. Revenue
- 3:12was up 20 % to $33 billion. 20 % growth. That's
- 3:16accelerating again. What's behind that seems
- 3:18to be strong demand and AI plus their core infrastructure
- 3:21services are still you know booming AWS is really
- 3:24firing all cylinders and they're seeing success
- 3:26in their content to write I saw some numbers
- 3:28on prime video Yeah, definitely like Thursday
- 3:30night football average viewers were up 16 % hitting
- 3:3315 .3 million. That's a solid number for streaming
- 3:35football and the summer I turned pretty Season
- 3:393 viewership apparently beat season 2 by 65 %
- 3:43so people are definitely watching. Okay, so Massive
- 3:46revenue growth, booming ads, accelerating cloud,
- 3:50hit shows. But didn't they also just have huge
- 3:53layoffs? Ah, yes. That's the paradox, isn't it?
- 3:5714 ,000 layoffs amid these record results. I
- 4:01saw operating income was basically flat. Right.
- 4:03Operating income came in at $17 .4 billion, pretty
- 4:06much flat. And when you dig into it, you see
- 4:08why. There was a $2 .5 billion charge for that
- 4:11FTC settlement. Oh. And $1 .8 billion in severance
- 4:15costs from those layoffs. So those two things
- 4:16basically wiped out the gains on the operating
- 4:18income line for the quarter. Pretty much. But
- 4:21here's where it gets interesting strategically.
- 4:23CEO Andy Jassy didn't really frame the layoffs
- 4:25around immediate financial pressure or even AI
- 4:28taking jobs. Oh, what was the rationale then?
- 4:30He called it a culture move. He talked about
- 4:32wanting Amazon to operate like the world's largest
- 4:35startup. The world's largest startup. Meaning
- 4:37what, exactly? Leaner? Faster? Exactly. Lean,
- 4:41flat, organizational structure moving quickly.
- 4:44He's essentially saying they need to cut layers
- 4:46in bureaucracy to maintain agility, especially
- 4:49with AI changing everything so fast. So it's
- 4:51less about cutting costs today and more about
- 4:53positioning for speed tomorrow. Investing in
- 4:56agility almost. That seems to be the argument.
- 4:58Paying the severance now is an investment in
- 5:01being able to pivot and innovate faster down
- 5:04the line. It's a bold move framing it that way.
- 5:06It really is. Shedding weight to run faster in
- 5:08the AI race. Okay, let's shift gears to another
- 5:11tech giant, Apple. Also, big earnings news from
- 5:14them. Yep, Apple reported Q4 revenue of $102
- 5:17.47 billion. That's up 8 % year over year. Solid
- 5:22growth. But the real standout number for Apple,
- 5:25it seems, was services. Oh, absolutely. Services
- 5:28revenue hit an all -time record, $28 .75 billion.
- 5:32All -time record, wow. What's included in services
- 5:34again? That's things like the App Store, Apple
- 5:36Pay, Apple TV, Apple Music, iCloud. Basically
- 5:39all their subscription and recurring revenue
- 5:41streams and that growth was strong really strong
- 5:44up 15 % year -over -year. That's high margin
- 5:47predictable Revenue which investors love right
- 5:50and I noticed they rebranded the streaming service
- 5:52just Apple TV now dropped the Plus cert. Yeah.
- 5:56Simplifying the branding. Makes sense. What about
- 5:58the iPhone? It's still the core product, right?
- 6:00Still the core. And it performed well. iPhone
- 6:03sales hit 49 .03 billion, up 6%. That actually
- 6:08set a September quarter record for iPhone revenue.
- 6:10Even with the new iPhone 17 models having some
- 6:13launch constraints, apparently. Right. Joe's
- 6:15the underlying demand is still incredibly strong.
- 6:17But like you said, the services story is becoming
- 6:20increasingly central, and their content plays
- 6:22are a big part of that. Speaking of content,
- 6:24that Formula One movie, F1. That did really well,
- 6:28didn't it? It did huge numbers. Box Office was,
- 6:30what, $629 million worldwide? A massive success
- 6:33for them. And that led to something bigger, right?
- 6:35With actual F1 races. Exactly. Leveraging that
- 6:38movie's success, Apple went and secured the exclusive
- 6:41U .S. rights to broadcast Formula One races.
- 6:44Exclusive U .S. rights? Starting in 2026, for
- 6:48five years. That's a major sports content acquisition.
- 6:51It shows how serious they are about making Apple
- 6:53TV a destination. So, using movies to build buzz
- 6:56and relationships, then locking down premium
- 6:59live sports, that really boosts the value of
- 7:01the whole services bundle. Precisely. The hardware
- 7:04gets people into the ecosystem, but services,
- 7:08especially with unique content like F1, keeps
- 7:10them there and paying. Okay, but there's another
- 7:14big piece to Apple's future. AI. How are they
- 7:16doing there? They've been seen as maybe lagging
- 7:20a bit behind rivals like Meta and Google. That's
- 7:22definitely the perception. And this earnings
- 7:24report shows they're spending heavily to catch
- 7:26up, or at least integrate AI more deeply. R &D
- 7:29spending was up 14%. 14 % jump in R &D, and that's
- 7:32focused on AI. Focused squarely on AI, yes. They
- 7:35highlighted upcoming features like live translation,
- 7:38that workout buddy thing, features that weave
- 7:40AI into the daily user experience on their devices.
- 7:43Hmm. But is a 14 % increase enough? I mean, if
- 7:47they're playing catch -up, is this just the cost
- 7:49of entry now, or are they really aiming to lead?
- 7:52Features like live translation, others have had
- 7:55that for a while, right? That's a fair question.
- 7:57Yeah. It does feel like some of these initial
- 7:59features are about reaching parity, but the level
- 8:02of spending suggests a serious long -term commitment.
- 8:06So maybe it's table stakes now. You have to spend
- 8:08big on AI just to keep your premium products
- 8:10feeling premium. I think that's part of it. They
- 8:12need to deliver seamless integrated AI experiences
- 8:15to justify their hardware prices and keep that
- 8:18massive services engine humming. The cost of
- 8:21not investing heavily in AI would probably be
- 8:23much higher in the long run. OK, so Apple's leveraging
- 8:25its hardware base to build this incredible services
- 8:28record fueled by content like F1 and now pouring
- 8:31money into AI to protect and enhance that whole
- 8:34ecosystem. Makes sense. Exactly, which brings
- 8:37us nicely to our third story. This one is really
- 8:39about the plumbing, the legal foundation for
- 8:41this new AI world. It involves Getty Images.
- 8:45Right, the big photo agency. They struck a deal
- 8:47with an AI company. Yeah, with Perplexity AI.
- 8:51It's a global multi -year licensing agreement.
- 8:54Essentially, Perplexity gets to use Getty's vast
- 8:57library of high -quality images within its AI
- 9:01search and discovery tools. And the market liked
- 9:03this news. Oh, the market loved it. Getty images
- 9:06stock absolutely skyrocketed, jumped over 55
- 9:10% after the announcement. 55 % just from this
- 9:13one deal? Well, it signals something really important.
- 9:16It's about the legal and ethical side of AI development.
- 9:19How so? What are the key terms? The crucial part
- 9:22is that Perplexity agreed to provide proper attribution
- 9:25for the images. That means including image credit
- 9:27and importantly a link back to the source on
- 9:30Getty. Okay, that does sound significant because
- 9:32a lot of AI models were trained on, well, basically
- 9:35everything scraped from the web without permission
- 9:37or payment, right? Exactly. It's been a huge
- 9:39point of contention, lawsuits flying, debates
- 9:41about copyright. This deal is a concrete example
- 9:44of an AI company proactively licensing content
- 9:47and agreeing to respect creators' rights and
- 9:50attribution. A shift from scrape first, ask forgiveness
- 9:53later, to license properly upfront. Precisely.
- 9:56And the massive stock jump shows how valuable
- 9:59the market thinks that legitimate, legally licensed
- 10:03approach is going to be. It builds trust. Tell
- 10:06us a bit more about Perplexity. They're relatively
- 10:08new, aren't they? Yeah, founded in 2022. They
- 10:11position themselves as an answer engine, not
- 10:14just a search engine. They aim to give direct
- 10:16answers to questions, but crucially with citations
- 10:19linking back to the sources. OK, so citations
- 10:22are core to their model and they're getting traction.
- 10:25A lot of traction. They say they're answering
- 10:27over 150 million questions a week now. And their
- 10:30valuation shot up recently to around $20 billion.
- 10:34$20 billion. Wow. Weren't they also the ones
- 10:36who made that audacious bid for Google Chrome?
- 10:39That's them. The $34 .5 billion bid. Most people
- 10:44saw it as a massive marketing stunt. to get their
- 10:46name out there. Well, it worked. We're talking
- 10:48about them. It did. And there's constant chatter
- 10:50among analysts about whether Apple should just
- 10:52buy Perplexity to jumpstart its own AI search
- 10:55capabilities, linking back to our Apple discussion.
- 10:58Interesting connection. So this Getty deal helps
- 11:01Perplexity look more legitimate, more sustainable,
- 11:04less risky legally. Absolutely. In a field where
- 11:07many AI startups are facing legal headwinds over
- 11:10training data, Perplexity is making deals, paying
- 11:13for content, agreeing to attribution. It makes
- 11:16their whole model look more durable and, frankly,
- 11:19more ethical. A very important development in
- 11:22how AI interacts with existing content industries.
- 11:25Okay, before we wrap up, we need to thank another
- 11:27sponsor. Yes, indeed. We also want to thank Skony.
- 11:30They make premium golf shoes. If you're a golfer,
- 11:32you know how important good shoes are. Skone
- 11:35offers fantastic style, but also real performance
- 11:38and comfort on the course. Definitely worth checking
- 11:40out if you're hitting the links or maybe looking
- 11:42for a gift for the golfer in your life. And listeners
- 11:44can get a great deal too. Use the promo code

- 11:50for 15 % off your entire purchase. Find them
- 11:53online at skone .com .com .com. Okay, so let's
- 12:01quickly recap the three big takeaways from today's
- 12:03tech news. Right, first up, Amazon. Huge quarter
- 12:07driven by ads and AWS acceleration, but the key
- 12:10strategic insight might be Jassy's world's largest
- 12:13startup, framing for the layoffs, prioritizing
- 12:16speed and agility for the AI future. Second,
- 12:19Apple. Services revenue hit an all -time record
- 12:22showing the power of their ecosystem and content
- 12:24strategy underscored by that big F1 rights deal.
- 12:28And they're ramping up AI spending significantly
- 12:31to protect and grow that services engine. And
- 12:33finally, the Getty Images and Perplexity AI deal.
- 12:37It's a landmark agreement showing that legal
- 12:39licensing and proper attribution for content
- 12:42are becoming essential and valuable requirements
- 12:44for AI companies. It signals a shift towards
- 12:46a more responsible AI web. Three really important
- 12:49shifts happening right now, fascinating stuff.
