- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. Mark Chapter 2 kicks off with an
- 0:45absolutely wild scene. Jesus is back in Capernaum in a
- 0:49house, speaking the Word to those gathered.
- 0:52The crowd has gotten so large that there was no room, not even
- 0:55near the door. Well, the same time four men
- 0:58came to Jesus carrying a fifth man who was paralyzed and lying
- 1:02on a pallet because they could not get to see Jesus the
- 1:05traditional way through the front door.
- 1:07These men had to improvise, so they climbed up to the roof with
- 1:11the pallet, dug a hole in the roof, and lowered the paralytic
- 1:15man down to Jesus. Can you imagine being one of
- 1:17those standing in the house and listening to Jesus teaching?
- 1:21Jesus, seeing the faith of these men, spoke to the man who was
- 1:24paralyzed and told him, Son, your sins are forgiven.
- 1:29But among the crowd there were some scribes who were thinking
- 1:32to themselves that this had to be blasphemy.
- 1:35Only God can forgive sins. Jesus, who knew exactly what
- 1:39they were thinking, spoke to the scribes directly.
- 1:42He said, why are you reasoning about these things in your
- 1:44heart, which is easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are
- 1:48forgiven, or to say get up and pick up your pallet and walk?
- 1:52The answer to this rhetorical question is obvious.
- 1:55It's much easier to say to someone that their sins are
- 1:58forgiven because it cannot be tested or proven false in the
- 2:01moment. The more difficult thing to say
- 2:03would be get up and pick up your pallet and walk, because in that
- 2:07moment a real paralytic will either stand up and walk or will
- 2:11prove that Jesus is just another Jewish rabbi on a power trip.
- 2:15Now listen to what Jesus says next, but so that you may know
- 2:20that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
- 2:23sins. And now he turned to the
- 2:25paralytic and said, I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet
- 2:30and go home. And just like that, this
- 2:33paralytic lowered into the house by 4 men who dug a hole in the
- 2:37roof, stood up and immediately picked up his pallet and left.
- 2:42What a miracle. But don't miss the main point.
- 2:45Jesus makes clear the why of this healing.
- 2:49He told the scribes, so that you may know, that the Son of Man
- 2:53has authority on earth to forgive sins.
- 2:56This miraculous healing was more than just a physical healing.
- 2:59When he told the paralytic that his sins were forgiven, he meant
- 3:03it. And with this physical healing,
- 3:05he was demonstrating to the paralytic, to the scribes, to
- 3:09the crowd, and to us as readers that his offer of forgiveness
- 3:13was no mere gesture of empty words.
- 3:16He, the one with the power and authority to heal a paralyzed
- 3:19man, has the power and authority to forgive him of his sins.
- 3:24This miracle of healing was pointing to an even greater
- 3:27miracle, the miracle of sinful man being forgiven by the holy,
- 3:32holy, holy God. And that paralytic left not just
- 3:36with limbs that could move and function, but with a soul made
- 3:40clean by the Son of Man, Jesus Christ.
