- 1:40Speaker 1: Chackwick Boldman. He has a new TV series and owned
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Fox Network called Showtime at the Apollo Storing. The
- 1:47Speaker 1: one and Only Steve Harvey. Please work with the money
- 1:50Speaker 1: making conversations. Reginald Hudland. Now, come on, Reginald. That's a lot, man,
- 1:58Speaker 1: that's a lot. That's a lot. I'm saying. I'm trying
- 2:02Speaker 1: to be busy man. You know me trying to stay
- 2:04Speaker 1: moving target. Well, you know, and you do it so well.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And I want to just start out about relationship because
- 2:10Speaker 1: I when I look at your career, and I know
- 2:12Speaker 1: my relationship with you over the years, because you've always
- 2:15Speaker 1: contacted me or I contacted you, and we've always blended
- 2:19Speaker 1: our ideas and and just to stay out there in
- 2:21Speaker 1: front of the next moment. How how important is relationships
- 2:26Speaker 1: in your success story? It's crucial. Uh. You know you
- 2:31Speaker 1: can't do it alone. Uh. Now, you got to get
- 2:35Speaker 1: your act together. You got to do your part and
- 2:37Speaker 1: then some. But then the next step is to find
- 2:41Speaker 1: like minded people, people who share your value system, people
- 2:45Speaker 1: who share your work ethic um, people who share your goals.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And that's what I've always felt about you, which is
- 2:53Speaker 1: why I've always said to you, if I'm working, you're working.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You know, I've always for opportunities to help you, because
- 3:02Speaker 1: I know, without asking, you will always look for an
- 3:05Speaker 1: opportunity to help me. I asked that because we had
- 3:10Speaker 1: to go back BT. You know, you say, uh, sitting
- 3:14Speaker 1: in the room trying to figure out how we're gonna
- 3:17Speaker 1: work together. You meet Steve Harvey and that's how we
- 3:19Speaker 1: did celebration of gospel the last thirteen years. That was
- 3:24Speaker 1: a vision that you saw and you know, we wasn't
- 3:26Speaker 1: sure because we was coming off of that, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: cussing comedian, you know, uh, kids of comedy, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: deaf comedy jam. But that didn't bother you. You saw
- 3:37Speaker 1: beyond that and really lay the lay the groundwork for
- 3:42Speaker 1: Steve Harvey. I've seen ourselves in a different life. How
- 3:45Speaker 1: did you? But that was that was a decision that
- 3:47Speaker 1: you had to make. And I would say somewhat risky
- 3:49Speaker 1: because people going Steve Harvey at the comedian that cous
- 3:52Speaker 1: a lot. But you saw we're gonna Postevin hosts a
- 3:55Speaker 1: popular gospel show. Well, I just saw Steve as each
- 4:00Speaker 1: I am talent. You know What's what the whole world
- 4:03Speaker 1: is saying now. I saw from the beginning and he
- 4:07Speaker 1: has a big difference in terms of there's time of
- 4:12Speaker 1: two types of people in Hollywood. There's heat seekers and
- 4:16Speaker 1: there's talent seekers. Right now, if you are a talent seeker,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it doesn't matter if someone has been put on or not.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You go, this person is gifted and boy, can I
- 4:31Speaker 1: be lucky enough to work with that talented person? Or
- 4:35Speaker 1: oh you know, you can say, oh, that person, he's over,
- 4:38Speaker 1: he's not hot anymore. You go no, no, no, no,
- 4:40Speaker 1: that person is talented. And I believe of a talent,
- 4:45Speaker 1: whether it's been proven to the public or if the
- 4:48Speaker 1: public may think their moments over. If you spot talent,
- 4:53Speaker 1: then you invest. Now. If you can't feel spot taste talent,
- 4:59Speaker 1: if don't, if you don't have that sensibility, you have
- 5:03Speaker 1: to go with heat right right right, you know, otherwise
- 5:06Speaker 1: you can't even say it either. Well that's what's hot
- 5:08Speaker 1: right now, and you change hot. And I understand stand
- 5:12Speaker 1: people who that's all they can do. But I've been
- 5:15Speaker 1: blessed to be able to recognize talent. And when you
- 5:19Speaker 1: recognize talent, you can get there first. Come on now,
- 5:22Speaker 1: when I think that we yeah, that's a nice transition
- 5:25Speaker 1: to showtime at apobum. Man, I saw you on LinkedIn.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You were smiling, say we're back, We're back. I looked
- 5:34Speaker 1: at this show, man, and you you put your stamp
- 5:37Speaker 1: on it. Man, you put your stamp, your brand on it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You know, it's it feels exciting, it feels like the
- 5:43Speaker 1: original show. So what was your vision about the show?
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know, we got Steve Harving the biggest talent in
- 5:50Speaker 1: the universe right now, especially a TV media, And then
- 5:53Speaker 1: you have a brand that we know about. It has
- 5:55Speaker 1: been altered, a little bit chopped up, some people have
- 5:57Speaker 1: changed some stuff. What made you say this can work? Well?
- 6:02Speaker 1: First of all, this show Timothy Apollo, all these talent
- 6:06Speaker 1: shows don't exist without standing on the show to the
- 6:12Speaker 1: show Timothy Apology. That was the first. It was the best.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I mean, that's U can't I mean, like, come on,
- 6:20Speaker 1: this is this is this is Adam, this is the
- 6:24Speaker 1: this is the d n A. And I've talked to
- 6:28Speaker 1: people who worked on those other shows, and believe me,
- 6:31Speaker 1: the producers of those other shows referenced the Apollo all
- 6:35Speaker 1: the time. They say, well, you're the Apologist this way.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You know, we need to do it like this because
- 6:40Speaker 1: that's how the Apollo did it. So don't be fooled
- 6:45Speaker 1: the aose. Other people know what they're doing. They are
- 6:48Speaker 1: copying the Apollo. So we know it's gonna work because
- 6:53Speaker 1: it has always worked. It has worked before there was
- 6:57Speaker 1: TV right right right, So so now it's like, okay,
- 7:03Speaker 1: so we're back. Now we're on primetime. Now we're on
- 7:06Speaker 1: the major network. So now we've got to We can't
- 7:09Speaker 1: be stuck in the past. We got an upgrade, We
- 7:12Speaker 1: got new technology, got new ways of storytelling. We can
- 7:16Speaker 1: go deeper than we ever did before. So you keep
- 7:20Speaker 1: what works, and then you add to it, add to it,
- 7:23Speaker 1: add to it beautiful, and and and and it shows
- 7:26Speaker 1: so much in the in the clarity. But the thing
- 7:28Speaker 1: I like about you, Reginald, is that you are a visionary.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I remember when you called me when you were shooting
- 7:34Speaker 1: a djangle unchanged with Jamie Fox and Samuel Jackson, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: you said, Roshan, you gotta get your butt down here. Man,
- 7:40Speaker 1: we're doing something down here. Man. That's crazy. It's good,
- 7:44Speaker 1: I mean you said, I mean we're talking about this scene.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You saw what everybody was crying after the scene. It
- 7:49Speaker 1: was just so emotionally moved by that. You get involved
- 7:52Speaker 1: with projects like this all the time. This is not
- 7:54Speaker 1: accident huling. What's range. It's so you should say that
- 8:01Speaker 1: because I with right right. People are upset, hadn't read
- 8:07Speaker 1: the script, that know nothing. Oh man, this movie. Wait
- 8:11Speaker 1: what you work with Quick Tartino? Oh uh? You know
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know he gave black women. I'm like, I think
- 8:17Speaker 1: black women too. What we deal everybody's all worked up
- 8:25Speaker 1: and said, look, I didn't go. Have you read the script?
- 8:28Speaker 1: That go? Now? I said, I read the script. Here's
- 8:30Speaker 1: what the movie is about. It's about a black man
- 8:35Speaker 1: who do anything to get his wife back. He will
- 8:39Speaker 1: walk into hell and kill anybody between him and his
- 8:43Speaker 1: wife and get his wife's back. Now, I don't know
- 8:47Speaker 1: about you. I ain't got a problem with that. That
- 8:50Speaker 1: my kind of movie that I won't because you know,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I read my wife. Don't get between me and my wife.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It'll get handled right. So I'm like, wait a minute,
- 9:00Speaker 1: we ain't see a movie like this. This is what
- 9:03Speaker 1: we need. So of course when the movie comes out,
- 9:06Speaker 1: everybody sees it, everybody gets quiet. Right, you know that
- 9:11Speaker 1: was that was pretty good. That was pretty good. I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you just gotta bo You gotta you can't go by
- 9:22Speaker 1: other people. You can't be a heat seeker. You gotta
- 9:25Speaker 1: be a talent secret you gotta you gotta recognize real
- 9:29Speaker 1: when it comes your way and go I believe in
- 9:31Speaker 1: this and I'm riding for this. And when you do that,
- 9:35Speaker 1: it works out. Wow. Okay, We're on the phone with
- 9:37Speaker 1: Reginald Hudling, a two pioneer a true friend and innovator.
- 9:41Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about the Oscars, the Image Awards, because man,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'm telling you something. Man, what you're doing with the
- 9:45Speaker 1: Image Awards special. We're right back with more. Reginald Husband. Hi,
- 9:51Speaker 1: just Rashan McDonald. You're listening to money making conversation. I'm
- 9:54Speaker 1: the host on the phone is of my guest film
- 9:57Speaker 1: and TV director and producer. Friend. You've seen this MOVI
- 10:00Speaker 1: Movies Boomerang, which is on one of the all time
- 10:03Speaker 1: classics House Party, one of the all time classics. If
- 10:06Speaker 1: you've never seen Baby Kids, the great Robin Harris story
- 10:10Speaker 1: and animation amazing, not originald I want to talk about
- 10:16Speaker 1: this will never be repeated in history. Producer for the Oscars,
- 10:21Speaker 1: producer for in Double ACP Image Awards. Yes, sir, that
- 10:27Speaker 1: is too totally different mindset. Please tell people into your
- 10:33Speaker 1: world or how as a producer you're able to flip
- 10:36Speaker 1: the script because you're entertaining two different audiences. How does that?
- 10:40Speaker 1: But but here's the thing is, I love to entertain.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I love to entertain audiences that love black movies and
- 10:51Speaker 1: TV shows, and I love speaking to the whole all
- 10:55Speaker 1: of America, the whole world that's the audience for the Oscars,
- 10:59Speaker 1: that's the whole world. I can do both. I't going
- 11:02Speaker 1: the problem with that. And I did both in the
- 11:05Speaker 1: same year, within thirty days of each other. Most people
- 11:10Speaker 1: who cand of hasshion producing one of those shows on
- 11:14Speaker 1: both of those shows the same year. And I just said,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you know what, God's given me this much blessing that
- 11:20Speaker 1: I can do both these things. And I guess she
- 11:23Speaker 1: knows I can get it done, So just get it done.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You know the amazing thing when I talk talk to
- 11:28Speaker 1: you about what you're accomplishing, and and when I try
- 11:32Speaker 1: to get people through, you know you have no fear.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And I love that about you because you know change
- 11:38Speaker 1: is good. And like you said, you did the Image
- 11:42Speaker 1: Awards and you did the Oscars within thirty days of
- 11:46Speaker 1: each other. The production scheduled, the doubts. What what was
- 11:50Speaker 1: your support system to get through all that? What was
- 11:52Speaker 1: your support system? Well, the first thing, I've been producing
- 11:56Speaker 1: the Image Awards now for five six years, So I
- 12:00Speaker 1: called the A c P. And I said, Um, Sherbet
- 12:05Speaker 1: and Isaacs, a black woman who's the president of the Academy,
- 12:08Speaker 1: wants me produced the Oscars. Now I know that is
- 12:12Speaker 1: in part because I've been, you know, producing the Image
- 12:16Speaker 1: Awards so successfully. So I want to thank you for
- 12:20Speaker 1: giving me the opportunity to showcase my ability on the
- 12:23Speaker 1: Image Awards, and my commitment to the Image Awards will
- 12:28Speaker 1: continue as I do the Oscars. So they understood that,
- 12:35Speaker 1: and they know if I say it, I mean it.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And you know there was no fall off. There was
- 12:40Speaker 1: no drop off, you know, in terms of my commitment
- 12:44Speaker 1: to the Image Awards. At the same time, the Oscars
- 12:48Speaker 1: is a whole other thing. You making a show for
- 12:51Speaker 1: the planet. Basically it was two of the two biggest
- 12:58Speaker 1: television shows every year are just at two shows. It's
- 13:02Speaker 1: the super Bowl and the Oscars. There, right, So you're
- 13:07Speaker 1: doing a show that the entire planets going to see,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and all of Hollywood is looking at you. What are
- 13:14Speaker 1: you going to do? Who are you going to put on?
- 13:16Speaker 1: You're not gonna pen on? How are you gonna deal
- 13:18Speaker 1: with it? Incredible incredible pressure and you have, um, yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 1: because whatever, you know, I've been watching the show my
- 13:28Speaker 1: whole life, so I know what I like, I know
- 13:31Speaker 1: what I don't like, and you gotta approach it like that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You gotta approach it like a fan. Now here's the
- 13:37Speaker 1: there's a great thing about you, Okay, Black Panther. So
- 13:40Speaker 1: you a Black Panther before Black Panther. You know the
- 13:44Speaker 1: comic book. You know, he's always with Sean. I gotta
- 13:47Speaker 1: get through worried out by my comic book, the animated series,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and I'm going okay because I knew nothing about the movie,
- 13:53Speaker 1: you know. So so you was out there with that brand,
- 13:55Speaker 1: with a clear and that's what I keep telling you.
- 13:57Speaker 1: He's a visionary. People need to understand it's about Reginald.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Need to follow this guy on social media, need to
- 14:02Speaker 1: track this guy on LinkedIn, because he's always ahead of
- 14:05Speaker 1: the curve, always with a clear understanding, with the power
- 14:10Speaker 1: Black Panther. How has Black Panther changed Hollywood? It's changed
- 14:15Speaker 1: everything because right now it's it's just it's I think
- 14:24Speaker 1: the number four biggest movie in Hollywood history about to
- 14:28Speaker 1: be number three. It's bigger than every other superhero movie.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It just passed Jurassic Parker, getting ready to pass Titanic
- 14:38Speaker 1: um and it didn't being the blackest possible movie you
- 14:43Speaker 1: can make? What white doe? Wh do do I do?
- 14:45Speaker 1: The one guy killed everything? Right a minute, when have
- 14:51Speaker 1: you ever seen Black Utopia on a movie before. Yes, sir, yes, sir,
- 14:56Speaker 1: world we're like no, we run things. We're more vance
- 15:00Speaker 1: and everybody else. And that's what I wrote in the
- 15:02Speaker 1: comic book years ago. I wrote the combook for four years,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and the important thing about the book was, and now
- 15:11Speaker 1: I'm getting ready to say some historical truths. In Benin
- 15:17Speaker 1: we had meadow alloys, right, take two medals and blending
- 15:20Speaker 1: them together, while people in Europe was still living in caves.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So you know, the fact is, in that prehistoric point
- 15:29Speaker 1: of history, we were a more advanced culture. So the
- 15:34Speaker 1: premise of Wakanda is what if we never lost that
- 15:38Speaker 1: head stopped and you know, and we we wouldn't lose it,
- 15:43Speaker 1: and we were such a military might that we could
- 15:47Speaker 1: not be conquered. And there are countries like that. You
- 15:51Speaker 1: look at Vietnam. They beat the Chinese, they beat the French,
- 15:55Speaker 1: they beat the Americans. They did in Afghanistan, they beat
- 15:59Speaker 1: the Russians, they beat you. There's certain countries just can't
- 16:02Speaker 1: get me. I don't care what they are. I know.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I so what kind is one of those countries? You
- 16:08Speaker 1: can't beat me? I don't care who you are? Step up,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and get some of this, and so they kept their culture.
- 16:18Speaker 1: They kept not just their music and their style, but
- 16:22Speaker 1: they're science and their morality. And that is why what
- 16:27Speaker 1: Kanda is the most powerful country in the world. And
- 16:30Speaker 1: it makes the core of the story and that's what
- 16:32Speaker 1: carries over to reality. You know. I'm saying that the
- 16:35Speaker 1: whole the way they was able to tie the STEM
- 16:37Speaker 1: program to the community. Don't leave a child behind. So
- 16:41Speaker 1: many messages that were told in their stories. It takes
- 16:44Speaker 1: a village to raise a child. All those stories. You know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you can walk with your father's footsteps, you can be
- 16:50Speaker 1: bigger than your father, you can be better, and never
- 16:52Speaker 1: assume situations are until you check the facts. It really
- 16:56Speaker 1: was an amazing movie. But I also like at what
- 16:58Speaker 1: everybody knows that again Mr Visionary, Mr hudlind was before
- 17:03Speaker 1: the game was before the game. Again, before everybody knew
- 17:07Speaker 1: by Steve Harvey, Mr Huddling say I'm gonna put you
- 17:10Speaker 1: on this gospel show on BT that ran thirteen years
- 17:13Speaker 1: when people complaining by Jane go unchanged boomerang, that's Mr Hudlin,
- 17:18Speaker 1: house party, that's Mr Hudlin. Come on, brother, and I
- 17:22Speaker 1: am I here to tell you sing your praises. Yes,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I am. That's what money maining conversations. That's what money
- 17:28Speaker 1: main conversations about. I appreciate. Well, look, man, that just
- 17:32Speaker 1: looks you know you've done it. I've done it. You
- 17:35Speaker 1: see something, you believe in it, you commit a hundreds
- 17:38Speaker 1: and percent. You know, my son sometimes to comment and
- 17:41Speaker 1: he goes, Daddy, let's go do something. As a way. Second,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I'm working right now. Let me finish my work. Then
- 17:47Speaker 1: you know, I'll come join you. He goes, but daddy
- 17:49Speaker 1: is Saturday. I said, Daddy works every day, and so
- 17:52Speaker 1: you there you go. I tell people that people understand,
- 17:57Speaker 1: especially when you're an entrepreneur or self in Lord, there's
- 18:01Speaker 1: not a five day wi scared or at eight hour
- 18:03Speaker 1: or at lunch breaks. Sometimes you know, if if you
- 18:07Speaker 1: work for yourself every minute, you're not working as you
- 18:11Speaker 1: losing money. And unfortunately I'm an I'm in a situation
- 18:16Speaker 1: where I could work as much as I want, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: you know, so I'm trying to get it done. Not
- 18:22Speaker 1: that you don't have to take breaks, that's that you
- 18:24Speaker 1: don't have to spend quality family time. But you've got
- 18:28Speaker 1: to put the work in. And fortunately my father owned
- 18:32Speaker 1: his own business. My grandfather owned his own business. So
- 18:36Speaker 1: even though you know, my grandfather was a Stonemason, and
- 18:40Speaker 1: my father watched how my grandfather ran his business for
- 18:43Speaker 1: good and for bad, he learned from it. He did
- 18:46Speaker 1: it better. You know. I watched my father sell insurance
- 18:50Speaker 1: and go, okay, that's that's what's good. Okay. I could
- 18:53Speaker 1: do a little better there. And I'm just trying to
- 18:56Speaker 1: improve old the men before me, and I look my
- 19:00Speaker 1: son and my daughter. I'm like, please look at what
- 19:04Speaker 1: I'm doing and blow me up the water. Please do better?
- 19:07Speaker 1: Cool now again, once everybody shows time at the Apollo
- 19:10Speaker 1: the Airs on Fox, hosted by Steve Harvey, produced by
- 19:13Speaker 1: the one and only Reginald Hudland. Reginald, I looked up
- 19:15Speaker 1: on online you say had a couple of projects. Uh
