- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Smarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. All right, everyone. Welcome to Connecting
- 0:18the Dots. We're here from Smarful Solutions Group.
- 0:21And, well, you know what? We do right. We take
- 0:22the top tech news stories and break them down
- 0:24for you. That's right. And of course, today's
- 0:27date is March 28th, 2025. So we are looking at
- 0:30our Staying Current section on the website for
- 0:33all the latest. Yep. So yeah, like today we've
- 0:36got a really interesting mix of stories, everything
- 0:39from like ads you see on your phone to AI and
- 0:43even the way app stores work. Yeah. I think people
- 0:46will be really surprised by some of this stuff.
- 0:47Yeah, hopefully so. So let's jump right in. Our
- 0:51first story is about Apploven. OK. They're a
- 0:55big company in the mobile advertising world.
- 0:57I mean, you probably haven't heard of them, but
- 0:59if you've ever played a free game on your phone
- 1:01or used an app with ads, well, that's probably
- 1:04their work. Yeah, I've definitely seen their
- 1:05stuff before. Yeah. So they're facing some serious
- 1:08allegations from a short -selling firm called
- 1:10Muddy Waters. Oh, wow. Yeah. So this report came
- 1:13out on Thursday. And it basically accuses Apple
- 1:16of reporting fake ad performance numbers. Hm.
- 1:21That's not good. Yeah, I mean, it's not just
- 1:23about like inflated numbers either. Oh, really?
- 1:26Yeah, there are also claims about them misusing
- 1:29data and even breaking the rules with some of
- 1:31their partners So it's pretty serious stuff.
- 1:34Yeah, I mean this could really hurt their business
- 1:35for sure and they're definitely taking it seriously
- 1:37They already hired a law firm to investigate
- 1:39everything but You know, why should we even care
- 1:44about this? Like what does it mean for us regular
- 1:46people? Well think about it a lot of apps are
- 1:50free because they show you ads. And its helpers
- 1:53get paid based on how well those ads perform.
- 1:56So if those numbers are fake, then the whole
- 1:57system is messed up. Oh, I see. Advertisers might
- 2:00be wasting their money, and developers might
- 2:02not be making as much as they should. Yeah, that
- 2:04makes sense. And what happens then? Well, we
- 2:07might see more apps with in -app purchases, more
- 2:10ads, or even fewer good quality free apps. Yeah,
- 2:15that would be annoying. Yeah, exactly. And it
- 2:17also raises questions about our privacy, right?
- 2:20Like, how is our data being used in all of this?
- 2:22It makes you wonder. Yeah, and if we can't trust
- 2:24the numbers, then how can we trust the whole
- 2:26system? It's like the foundation is shaky. Yeah,
- 2:30for sure. All right, well, let's move on to something
- 2:33a bit more futuristic, shall we? AI, specifically
- 2:36a company called Anthropic. Ooh, AI, that's always
- 2:40interesting. Yeah, and what's really cool about
- 2:42Anthropic is the founders, their story is fascinating.
- 2:46Oh, yeah. Yeah, so the founders are Dario and
- 2:50Daniela Amadei, and they were actually big names
- 2:52at OpenAI. OpenAI, that's like the leading AI
- 2:55lab, right? Exactly, but they decided to start
- 2:57their own thing. Wow, must have been a big decision.
- 3:00Yeah, and get this, Dario is known for going
- 3:02on these, like, vision quests. Vision quests.
- 3:04Yeah. Like spiritual journeys. Yeah, apparently.
- 3:07And Daniella, she was an English major. Wow.
- 3:10That's a very different background for AI. Right.
- 3:12Kind of breaking the mold. Totally. So what are
- 3:15they working on at Anthropic? Well, they have
- 3:17this AI model called Claude, and they're really
- 3:20focused on AI safety. AI safety. What does that
- 3:22even mean? Basically, they want to make sure
- 3:24that AI is developed responsibly, especially
- 3:27as it gets more and more powerful. Yeah. I mean,
- 3:29AI taking over the world. That's a classic sci
- 3:31-fi trick. Exactly. And they want to avoid that.
- 3:34So. How does this affect us in our daily lives?
- 3:38Well, think about all the ways AI is already
- 3:39being used, customer service chatbots, content
- 3:42creation, online recommendations. Right. And
- 3:45Thropic's work could ensure that all of that
- 3:47AI is built with safety and ethics in mind. Oh,
- 3:51I see. So it could be more reliable, less biased,
- 3:54and ultimately better for society. That's really
- 3:57important. We need to make sure AI is a tool
- 3:59and not a threat. Absolutely. All right. Let's
- 4:02switch gears again and talk about app stores.
- 4:03OK. So Google is making some changes in the UK.
- 4:06They're introducing something called user choice
- 4:08billing. User choice billing. What's that? Basically,
- 4:11it means that developers of non -game apps can
- 4:14now use their own billing systems instead of
- 4:17being forced to use Google's. Interesting. So
- 4:19does that mean, like, I get to choose how I pay
- 4:22for apps? Not exactly. It just means that developers
- 4:24have more options. And, you know, Google says
- 4:28that most developers are already happy with their
- 4:30current system, but this move is probably a way
- 4:33to avoid problems with regulators and keep developers
- 4:35happy. Yeah, makes sense. So how could this affect
- 4:38us users? Well, it could lead to lower prices
- 4:42or different subscription models for non -game
- 4:45apps. Ooh, that could be good. More competition
- 4:48usually means better deals for consumers. Exactly.
- 4:51Now, over in India, there's been a related development,
- 4:54but it's a bit different. Oh. Yeah. An appeals
- 4:57court there has upheld a ruling against Google
- 4:59saying that their app store billing policy was
- 5:02unfair and restrictive for developers. Wow. So
- 5:05it's like the opposite of what's happening in
- 5:07the UK. Kind of in the UK, Google is making a
- 5:09change to be more flexible in India. They were
- 5:11forced to change by regulators. I see. So what
- 5:14happened to Google in India? Did they get in
- 5:16trouble? Yeah, they were initially fined $110
- 5:18million, but the appeals court reduced it to
- 5:21$25 million. $25 million, that's still a lot
- 5:23of money. Definitely. So even though the fine
- 5:25was lowered, it still sends a message that Google
- 5:28needs to play fair. Yeah. And this is all part
- 5:30of a bigger trend, right? Like regulators all
- 5:32over the world are starting to look more closely
- 5:34at how these big tech companies operate. Exactly.
- 5:37And that could lead to a fairer and more competitive
- 5:40app market, which would benefit everyone. More
- 5:42innovation, more choices, better prices. I like
- 5:45the sound of that. Me too. All right, for our
- 5:48last story, let's talk about cryptocurrency.
- 5:51Crypto, oh boy. Yeah, so the UK is planning some
- 5:53big changes. They want to start authorizing new
- 5:56crypto firms in 2026. Authorizing them? What
- 5:59does that mean? Basically, it means they'll be
- 6:01regulated more closely. The FCA, their financial
- 6:05regulator, wants to create a more stringent regime
- 6:08for crypto. Stringent, huh? Sounds like they're
- 6:11cracking down. Yeah, they want to make sure things
- 6:13are safe and secure, consumer protection, anti
- 6:16-money laundering, all that good stuff. So will
- 6:19this affect me even if I don't use cryptocurrency?
- 6:21Well, the most direct impact will be for people
- 6:23who are already involved in crypto. OK. But this
- 6:26move could make crypto more mainstream, more
- 6:29appealing to regular people who might have been
- 6:32hesitant before. Makes sense if it's safer and
- 6:34more regulated. more people might be willing
- 6:36to try it out. Exactly. And it could also lead
- 6:39to new innovations in digital finance. Oh, interesting.
- 6:43Yeah. So even though it might seem far off right
- 6:46now, this could have big implications down the
- 6:48line. I see. All right. Well, that's all the
- 6:51techniques we have for today. Let's do a quick
- 6:52recap. OK. We started with AppLevin and the allegations
- 6:56about their ad data, which could affect the apps
- 6:58we use. Right. Then we talked about Anthropic
- 7:01and their focus on safe AI. Yeah, they're doing
- 7:05some really important work. Then it was all about
- 7:07app stores, Google's user choice billing in the
- 7:10UK, and the ruling against Google in India. Lots
- 7:13of changes happening there. And finally, the
- 7:15UK's plans to regulate crypto firms. Yep, the
- 7:18crypto landscape is definitely evolving. That's
- 7:20right. And that's what we do here at Connecting
- 7:22the Dots. We take all these tech stories and
- 7:24show you how they connect and why they matter.
- 7:27It's all about understanding the bigger picture.
- 7:29Absolutely. And remember, we are here to help
- 7:31here at SNARFL. So reach out on our website if
- 7:33you have any more questions. Yeah, we'd love
- 7:34to hear from you. All right. Thanks for listening,
- 7:36everyone. See you next time.
