- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfle Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex. And
- 0:18I'm Morgan. It's great to be here with you today,
- 0:19Tuesday, September 9th, 2025. We get some really
- 0:23fascinating stories lined up from the tech world.
- 0:26Absolutely. Stories that, well, they really show
- 0:28how fast things are changing. But before we jump
- 0:30into this, let's quickly get you set up with
- 0:31what's happening outside and in the markets.
- 0:35Sounds good. So national weather first. Keep
- 0:38an eye out for severe thunderstorms across the
- 0:40central and southern plains today. Yeah, potential
- 0:42for some serious flooding there, especially Kansas.
- 0:45And out west, Pacific Northwest, Northern California,
- 0:49could see some isolated flash flooding near those
- 0:51burn scars. Right, always a risk after fires,
- 0:54and Florida's still getting soaked, persistent
- 0:56showers, heavy rain down there. But here at home
- 0:58in Sacramento, much nicer pick. Oh yeah, much
- 1:01calmer, mostly sunny, maybe a slight chance of
- 1:04showers later, but a really pleasant high of
- 1:0778 degrees Fahrenheit. Perfect day for untangling
- 1:10some tech news. Indeed. Now the markets. Yesterday
- 1:13I saw some, well, pretty modest moves. The Dow
- 1:15Jones closed at 45 ,531 .13. Just a tiny dip,
- 1:20right? Like 0 .04 % down for the day. Exactly.
- 1:23But still up a bit for the week. About 0 .22%.
- 1:27And the S &P 500. Pretty similar story. Very
- 1:29similar. Almost flat on the day. Closed at 6
- 1:32,503 .72. That's up just 0 .01%. But also holding
- 1:37a small game for the week. So, you know, steady.
- 1:39Okay, but Bitcoin. That's where the action seems
- 1:41to be. Yeah, our digital darling, as you say.
- 1:46Yeah, still making waves. Closed strong at 112
- 1:50,750 .32. That's up over half a percent just
- 1:54yesterday. And get this up 1 .40 % over the past
- 1:58week. Wow, that kind of sustained growth is...
- 2:01Well, it's hard to ignore. It really is. It says
- 2:03something about the maybe maturing confidence
- 2:06in digital assets. I think so. And speaking of
- 2:08good news, especially for our Bay Area listeners,
- 2:11the Giants. Ah, yes. Tell us. They absolutely
- 2:14crushed the Diamondbacks yesterday, 11 to 5.
- 2:17Fantastic. Always good to beat Arizona. Logan
- 2:19Webb got the win. And Jung -Hoo Lee, what a night.
- 2:22Three for four with a homer. Just great to see
- 2:24them get that W. Love to hear it. All right,
- 2:26so let's shift focus now. Time for our Morningstar
- 2:28report. Let's do it. We've got three really pivotal
- 2:30stories today. Yeah, connecting the dots between
- 2:33like global innovation, market shifts and some
- 2:37pretty high stakes geopolitics. OK, first up,
- 2:40we're heading to the United Arab Emirates. They
- 2:43are making some serious, serious moves in the
- 2:45AI race. That's right. Their new research lab,
- 2:48the Institute of Foundation Models, IFM, for
- 2:50short, they've just open sourced their first
- 2:53AI model. It's called K2Think. K2Think. Okay,
- 2:57and what's the hook here? Well, what's really
- 2:58catching eyes is that it was trained on a relatively
- 3:01small number of AI chips, about 2 ,000. Only
- 3:042 ,000. That seems low compared to the massive
- 3:07clusters we usually hear about. Exactly. But
- 3:09the early benchmarks, they show it performing
- 3:11right up there with top open source models from
- 3:13OpenAI and China's DeepSeek. That is interesting.
- 3:17So it kind of challenges that. More chips equals
- 3:20better AI idea a little bit. It does suggest
- 3:23that perhaps training methods and data quality
- 3:25are just as crucial, maybe more so in some cases.
- 3:28So this isn't just the UAE throwing their hat
- 3:30in the ring. This open -sourcing approach, it
- 3:34feels strategic. How does it change things globally?
- 3:37Oh, it's definitely strategic. It signals the
- 3:40UAE wants to be a major player alongside the
- 3:43US and China in, you know, openly sharing AI
- 3:46tech. They're not just consumers, they're becoming
- 3:49contributors. Like building influence beyond
- 3:51just oil money. Precisely. And it's a trend we're
- 3:53seeing elsewhere too, like Saudi Arabia, Singapore,
- 3:56this idea that nations need their own AI capabilities,
- 4:00almost like national AI sovereignty. Okay, so
- 4:03if they're aiming for sovereignty and influence,
- 4:05what's the IFM's actual mission? What are they
- 4:07trying to build? Their goal is pretty broad.
- 4:10Build, understand, use, and manage the risks
- 4:13of these advanced AI models. They want to foster
- 4:15academic research, but for practical uses. So
- 4:18attract top scientists, make AI more accessible,
- 4:21maybe cheaper. Exactly. Large -scale, reusable,
- 4:24accessible, affordable AI. That's the mantra.
- 4:26It's about building a knowledge economy, really.
- 4:29Less dependence on outside vendors, more transparency.
- 4:32It's a long game. And the focus is on multimodal
- 4:34models. Can you break that down for us? What
- 4:36does that mean in practice? Sure. Multimodal
- 4:39means the AI can understand and process different
- 4:42types of data together, think language, audio,
- 4:45vision, all at once. So it could analyze a video
- 4:47call, understanding what's said, the tone of
- 4:50voice, and maybe even facial expressions. That's
- 4:53the idea. It opens up loads of applications.
- 4:55Better social media analysis, content moderation,
- 4:59reading text in images, that's OCR. product analysis.
- 5:04And also pushing things like chatbots, the large
- 5:06language models, forward. Yep. And even into
- 5:08complex scientific areas like models for biological
- 5:11data. Think AlphaFold 2, but maybe applied differently.
- 5:14It's clear they're serious. You mentioned the
- 5:16university behind IFM, MBZ, UAI. They already
- 5:19have a track record, right? They do. They developed
- 5:21Jaze, which is the best open source Arabic language
- 5:24model out there. They worked with Meta on Llama
- 5:262 and their Vicuna chatbot, hugely popular, over
- 5:29three million downloads. And there's even more
- 5:31investment. Falcon Foundation. Right. Another
- 5:34arm, the Technology Innovation Institute, or
- 5:37TII, they launched the Falcon Foundation with
- 5:39a 300 million dollar commitment, all focused
- 5:42on open source generative AI, starting with their
- 5:45own Falcon models. It's all about building that
- 5:47independent ecosystem. Wow. OK, quite a statement.
- 5:51Now let's shift gears from AI development to
- 5:54the crypto world, another familiar name making
- 5:56headlines. Indeed. Gemini. The crypto exchange
- 6:00founded by the Winklevoss twins, Cameron and
- 6:02Tyler. Winklevoss twins? Yeah. Still at it. What's
- 6:05the news? They filed for an IPO, an initial public
- 6:08offering. They're aiming to list on the Nasdaq
- 6:10Global Select Market, ticker symbol GEMI. An
- 6:13IPO for Gemini. OK, that's a big deal. They'd
- 6:15be the third big crypto exchange to go public
- 6:17after Coinbase and Bullish. That's right. And
- 6:20maybe a sign of confidence. Nasdaq itself is
- 6:23apparently planning to buy $50 million worth
- 6:25of Gemini shares during the IPO in a private
- 6:27placement. NASDAQ investing directly. Okay, that
- 6:31does lend some credibility. Does this feel like
- 6:33crypto is, I don't know, finally growing up a
- 6:35bit, shaking off that Wild West image? It certainly
- 6:38points that way. We're seeing a bit of a rebound
- 6:40in IPOs for digital asset companies in the US.
- 6:44Part of that is likely an easing regulatory environment,
- 6:48maybe more institutional adoption, picking up
- 6:50steam. And the Trump administration's sort of
- 6:53embrace of digital currencies probably doesn't
- 6:55hurt either. Likely playing a role, yes. It signals
- 6:57a move towards seeking legitimacy, broader investment,
- 7:01becoming more mainstream. And Gemini is not just
- 7:03an exchange rate. They've been around since 2014.
- 7:05They have other products. They do they have their
- 7:07own US dollar backed stable coin the Gemini dollar
- 7:10or G USD and that crypto rewards credit card
- 7:14Stable coins seem increasingly important. We
- 7:17even have new laws like the genius act setting
- 7:20of rules for them What does that mean for say
- 7:22the average professional? It means stable coins
- 7:25are becoming a more well understood and regulated
- 7:28part of finance. The Genius Act shows lawmakers
- 7:31see their potential and want to integrate them
- 7:33responsibly. So less risky ways to use digital
- 7:36assets, maybe for payments or hedging? Potentially,
- 7:39yes. More stable ways to interact with the crypto
- 7:42space for things like cross -border payments,
- 7:45maybe holding value without the wild swings of
- 7:47Bitcoin, for example. It's about financial utility,
- 7:50moving beyond just pure speculation. It really
- 7:53is quite the journey for the Wiggle Boss twins.
- 7:54Yeah. From the Facebook battle to crypto pioneers,
- 7:58now an IPO. A full circle moment in some ways
- 8:01makes you wonder what Zuckerberg thinks now.
- 8:03Yeah. Yeah. But OK, from an investment angle,
- 8:07Gemini's financials, they reported pretty big
- 8:09losses, right? Like. 282 million dollar loss
- 8:12in the first half of this year. That's right
- 8:14on about 68 million dollars in revenue compared
- 8:16to 158 million dollar loss on 142 million dollar
- 8:20revenue in all of 2024. So yeah, widening losses.
- 8:23So is this IPO really about maturity or is it
- 8:27more about raising cash to cover losses and debt?
- 8:30How do they compete with say Coinbase, which
- 8:32is much bigger? That's the critical question
- 8:34for investors. The IPO proceeds are earmarked
- 8:36for general corporate stuff and paying down debt.
- 8:38It's not necessarily funding some massive new
- 8:41growth spurt right away. So differentiation is
- 8:43key. Absolutely. How will they stand out? How
- 8:46will they get to profitability? As one expert
- 8:48noted, the shift in crypto investing is moving
- 8:50from speculation to sustainability. Meaning investors
- 8:54want real clients. regulated products. Exactly.
- 8:57Long -term market alignment. It's a big test
- 8:59for Gemini post IPO. Okay, from digital finance
- 9:02to the hardware that powers so much of the modern
- 9:05tech world. Our third story, NVIDIA. And it's
- 9:10chip sales to China. Yes, a really complex situation
- 9:13here with huge implications. The bottom line
- 9:16is Nvidia is set to resume selling its H20 AI
- 9:19chips to China. H20. Those were the ones designed
- 9:22to kind of get around earlier US expert controls,
- 9:25weren't they? They were. And now it seems the
- 9:27US government has given assurances that the licenses
- 9:29needed to sell them will be granted. And this
- 9:32comes after some high level maneuvering. Seems
- 9:34so. There was a meeting reported between Nvidia
- 9:37CEO Jensen Huang and President Trump just last
- 9:39week, and Nvidia ran a pretty aggressive lobbying
- 9:42campaign against proposals to limit AI chip sales
- 9:44to China further. Aggressive is one word for
- 9:47it. Didn't they label supporters of the restrictions
- 9:50AI -doomers? That's pretty punchy language to
- 9:53use with lawmakers. It is. It really highlights
- 9:55the intense pressure and high stakes involved.
- 9:58And you can see why Nvidia fought so hard when
- 10:00you look at the economics. What was the impact
- 10:02of halting those H20 sales? It was massive, an
- 10:05estimated $4 .5 billion hit from inventory write
- 10:09-downs, plus another $2 .5 billion in loss projected
- 10:13sales. Wow. Okay, so resuming sales is absolutely
- 10:16vital for them. A watershed moment, as analysts
- 10:18are calling it. It significantly boosts their
- 10:21revenue outlook. China was 13 percent of Nvidia's
- 10:24total sales last fiscal year. That's 17 billion
- 10:27dollars. Seventeen billion dollars just from
- 10:29China. OK, so this isn't just about one company's
- 10:32profits. It's this constant tension, isn't it?
- 10:34Economic interest versus national security concerns.
- 10:37Exactly. And Congress is still wrestling with
- 10:39it. The Senate and House are considering new
- 10:41rules trying to prioritize U .S. companies for
- 10:43critical AI tech before it goes to China. Some
- 10:46proposals are framed as America first. But this
- 10:48decision to grant licenses suggests maybe more
- 10:51pragmatic approach is winning out for now, balancing
- 10:55the economic hit against the security worries.
- 10:57It seems that way. It's a constant balancing
- 10:59act. Where do you draw the line between fostering
- 11:02economic growth through tech leadership and,
- 11:05you know, potential security risks down the road?
- 11:08Especially when one company, NVIDIA, is so dominant.
- 11:11What's their market share in AI chips again?
- 11:13It's estimated at around 97 % for the GPU accelerators.
- 11:17Those are the real workhorses for AI. Like turbochargers
- 11:20for AI tasks. Good analogy. They speed everything
- 11:23up drastically. So letting these sales resume,
- 11:26at least for now, it effectively gives Chinese
- 11:29companies more time to develop their own chip
- 11:31technology. Buy some time. And Nvidia's rivals,
- 11:34AMD, Intel. They're probably watching this closely,
- 11:37planning their own moves for the China market.
- 11:39Oh, absolutely. They're expected to introduce
- 11:41their own AI chips designed for China too. So
- 11:43the pressure on regulators, on suppliers, it's
- 11:46not going away. It's a really dynamic space,
- 11:49heavily influenced by geopolitics. So for businesses
- 11:51relying on this cutting edge AI hardware or even
- 11:55just watching the global AI race, what's the
- 11:58takeaway? Adaptability is key and keeping a very
- 12:02close eye on policy shifts. Because the landscape
- 12:05is constantly changing. Today's solution could
- 12:07easily become tomorrow's problem or restriction.
- 12:10Constant vigilance. Okay, let's quickly recap
- 12:13these three big stories and connect the dots
- 12:14one last time. Sounds good. First we have the
- 12:17UAE stepping up significantly in AI. Right. Open
- 12:20sourcing their K2 Think model, trained efficiently,
- 12:23aiming to be a global player and foster broader
- 12:26innovation. A strategic move. Then we talked
- 12:28about Gemini's IPO. the Winklevoss exchange going
- 12:31public on NASDAQ. A sign of crypto maturing,
- 12:34moving mainstream, navigating regulation, even
- 12:37with financial questions still lingering. And
- 12:39finally, Nvidia getting the green light to resume
- 12:41selling its H20 AI chips to China. Highlighting
- 12:44that intense tug of war between huge economic
- 12:47stakes, national security concerns, and the global
- 12:50AI arms race. Yeah, taking together these stories
- 12:52really paint a picture of a world where technology,
- 12:55business, and geopolitics are just incredibly
- 12:58intertwined. And changing faster than ever. The
- 13:01future of AI, finance, global tech supply chains,
- 13:05it's all being reshaped right now. Definitely
- 13:07a lot to think about how these shifts redefine
- 13:10not just tech, but maybe our societies, global
- 13:13power. Yeah. It's happening now. Absolutely.
