- 1:24Speaker 1: My next guests is a renaissance man. I say that
- 1:27Speaker 1: because um, he can do it all. He's He's had
- 1:31Speaker 1: a thirteen year NBA career, a two time NBA All
- 1:33Speaker 1: Store and record holder, independent movie mogul. He has several
- 1:37Speaker 1: companies sports and lifestyle and culture called Slick, their Black
- 1:41Speaker 1: Santa Company which I love, Business Land Inside the Game,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Business Inside the Game, called Big and No Label, each
- 1:48Speaker 1: with the objective of combining creative talent with the original
- 1:51Speaker 1: publication and production to develop and provide educational and heartwarming
- 1:55Speaker 1: stories that appeal to global audiences of all age used.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Please Welcome to Money Making Conversations Byron Davis thank you, guys.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I was running who you was talking about. I was
- 2:05Speaker 1: looking for that. You need to really need to stop backing.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Would I would just go back when we when we
- 2:10Speaker 1: first met many years ago, used to come up to
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Steve Hurry Morning Show. I was the producer. We
- 2:15Speaker 1: just we just we were chopping up back then when
- 2:17Speaker 1: you were doing those Magic Johns and All Star Games
- 2:20Speaker 1: back in the day. Man, I've always been a big
- 2:22Speaker 1: fan of yours. But one thing I wanted to say
- 2:24Speaker 1: about you is that I said renaissance man, And I
- 2:26Speaker 1: said that with with with a lot of uh what
- 2:31Speaker 1: I say, uh, pride, Because man, you've always from the
- 2:35Speaker 1: jump you kind of like you kind of like started
- 2:37Speaker 1: this little motion of for these athletes going out there
- 2:40Speaker 1: into entertainment. So I'm gonna give you credit, man, because
- 2:42Speaker 1: you jumped out there first, and because you you know
- 2:45Speaker 1: you you you You've had an amazing career. Because I
- 2:49Speaker 1: always tell people because I followed your career and unfortunately
- 2:52Speaker 1: it was filled with injuries, and but every time you
- 2:55Speaker 1: came back from an injury, you performed at a high level.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And I want to just out there right quick. Was
- 3:01Speaker 1: what was that motivation? Because a lot of times when
- 3:03Speaker 1: you get injured, you can just give up. You can
- 3:05Speaker 1: just say, hey, man, wow, I'm tired of this, but
- 3:08Speaker 1: you came back. Every time you came back. Man, you
- 3:10Speaker 1: was a bad man on that court. Explain to this
- 3:13Speaker 1: how did that happen? Burn Man? You know, I think
- 3:17Speaker 1: it's just from my upbringing, you know, uh, going up
- 3:20Speaker 1: and I'm chilling the sands and she got to survive, right,
- 3:24Speaker 1: And you know it's like it's now people are calling
- 3:28Speaker 1: it uh PTSD right. Uh. But I think that when
- 3:34Speaker 1: you go up in situations like you know, in the
- 3:36Speaker 1: n City, you just learning how to survive. And when
- 3:39Speaker 1: you're back against the wall, it's almost like you're so
- 3:42Speaker 1: used to that, you're so comfortable and familiar with that
- 3:46Speaker 1: that it just becomes the norm. And so for me,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you know, every time I got injured, you know, I
- 3:53Speaker 1: always know I have my mind and you know, my
- 3:55Speaker 1: imagination and and will and you just don't realize how
- 4:01Speaker 1: much how much you can benefit from having you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: great imagination, because that's really what it's driven you to
- 4:09Speaker 1: this point, away from basketball, getting into projects. How does
- 4:14Speaker 1: like say, I used the word independent mogul, you know
- 4:18Speaker 1: in the movie Game, How does want to bring an
- 4:21Speaker 1: idea to you because I'm sure you get you get,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you get addressed with this situation all the time. Somebody
- 4:26Speaker 1: got an idea, Hey man, all that needs some money
- 4:28Speaker 1: from you burn, come on mare and hook me up
- 4:30Speaker 1: a good job. Idea gonna make a millions of dollars?
- 4:32Speaker 1: What drives you in the creative platform? For me, it's
- 4:36Speaker 1: being creative. It's being a person who always asked people
- 4:39Speaker 1: for money. Hey man, let me get them let me
- 4:44Speaker 1: get some money to make a movie from you know
- 4:47Speaker 1: what what what drugs needs is? I think that there's
- 4:51Speaker 1: a an opportunity, sir and um, you know, to tell
- 4:56Speaker 1: great stories and stories about us, worries about you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: how we um, who we are, what we do see
- 5:06Speaker 1: ourselves in different lives. Um, you know you're starting to
- 5:10Speaker 1: see a little bit. Black Panther was one. Um, you
- 5:14Speaker 1: know we got to get out and Moonlights. So you know,
- 5:17Speaker 1: there's always gonna renaissance of black cinema. And you know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: for me, just I want to be a historian, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and be a part of that. And so creatively it's
- 5:31Speaker 1: just going back and you know, mining our culture. And
- 5:36Speaker 1: I gotta and I gotta thank you for that, for
- 5:38Speaker 1: making it happen, because you was out there when reality
- 5:42Speaker 1: Reality TV was the finding black culture. It really was
- 5:45Speaker 1: for a period there you know, we were fighting on TV,
- 5:48Speaker 1: was Argon on TV? We was, but you was out
- 5:51Speaker 1: there telling the real stories, finding real story stories that
- 5:54Speaker 1: we could we could hang our hat on, that we
- 5:56Speaker 1: can learn about ourselves. And to see that turning into
- 5:59Speaker 1: like you said, the Black Panthers, the Moonlighting, the Blackish,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, the Steve Harvey brands, you know, the Michael
- 6:06Speaker 1: Michael Strahan's brand. These brands are very as they say,
- 6:09Speaker 1: general market brands. So it means that that that that
- 6:13Speaker 1: people are accepting our culture because of the fact that,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know, rapp has really played a major role in that.
- 6:20Speaker 1: We have to say that because because of the fact
- 6:22Speaker 1: that rap music, Uh, the same young people who grew
- 6:26Speaker 1: up on rap music were works accepting and so now
- 6:30Speaker 1: they're carrying that that mantle into the decision making. So
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm sure that that plays a major role in your
- 6:35Speaker 1: success to career. Absolutely, uh, you know, and I think
- 6:40Speaker 1: that you know what when we when we say us,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, it's really about I supporting us. That's why
- 6:47Speaker 1: it ain't a lot of movies or TV shows things
- 6:50Speaker 1: like that. It's like we're always waiting for someone to
- 6:54Speaker 1: come and say the day for us, are waiting for
- 6:58Speaker 1: you know, someone the green light of projects. And you know,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'm just you know, kind of enjoying being in this
- 7:04Speaker 1: renaissance because I know that, you know, just like you know,
- 7:08Speaker 1: the straight hands and the will packers, Michael B. Jordan's
- 7:11Speaker 1: all the great stuff. Come on, come on that I
- 7:15Speaker 1: do then, you know, and Byron David's come on that,
- 7:19Speaker 1: come on, come on, We're doing it. We're doing it.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But you know, for me, it's it's about once again,
- 7:26Speaker 1: just studying history and studying culture to say, okay, how
- 7:29Speaker 1: can I be the connective tissue two building? Uh you know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: uh an economy right. So that's why I'm playing all
- 7:40Speaker 1: over the place and film and TV and investments because
- 7:44Speaker 1: we need some economic institution. But you're not afraid. But
- 7:50Speaker 1: you're not afraid to be to be the personality. You
- 7:52Speaker 1: know when I see you on T and T, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know, being being funny, being entertaining, being a person
- 7:59Speaker 1: knowing that's a role that you're playing because for a
- 8:02Speaker 1: check and but delivering information, I'm thinking it's a man,
- 8:06Speaker 1: you know, Uh, this is the first thing we've ever
- 8:08Speaker 1: sat down to talk. But I've over they always been
- 8:11Speaker 1: impressed with your your versatility, and not just from an
- 8:15Speaker 1: athletics standpoint, because I always felt that you was beyond that,
- 8:18Speaker 1: because you always had an opinion when you were playing.
- 8:20Speaker 1: You know, you wasn't a guy just going to sit
- 8:22Speaker 1: over there and just go dribble the ball. You had
- 8:25Speaker 1: some thoughts, but you know, and you said your thoughts,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and a lot of a lot of people didn't like that.
- 8:29Speaker 1: But I think that that what drives you today. If
- 8:32Speaker 1: you if you I want to bring you back. I
- 8:33Speaker 1: want to finish this interview if you can hold on
- 8:35Speaker 1: the phone, because I want to talk about some of
- 8:37Speaker 1: your more your more visionary things that you have planning. Man,
- 8:39Speaker 1: But thank you for getting on the call. I know
- 8:41Speaker 1: you had to get your kids off to school, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: I appreciate that, brother, because I got a child and
- 8:45Speaker 1: that's what I would be too. We've been right back,
- 8:47Speaker 1: more money making conversations. He's still on the line. He's
- 8:51Speaker 1: a renaissance man. He had a thirteen year NBA career,
- 8:54Speaker 1: a two time NBA All Star. When the pressure was
- 8:56Speaker 1: on give him the ball. That's why I would see,
- 8:59Speaker 1: given the out the way, get out the way, Get
- 9:01Speaker 1: out the way, universe, here your guard. He come when
- 9:03Speaker 1: he was a point guard. So he just get away,
- 9:05Speaker 1: get away. I got this, I got this. He's an
- 9:08Speaker 1: amazing entrepreneur. In the call a movie a Moving Mogel.
- 9:12Speaker 1: When I met him, he was still playing back in
- 9:14Speaker 1: l a um even coming to the morning show booth
- 9:18Speaker 1: Steve Harvey myself, I was the executive producer of the show,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and even though he was there for an athletic reason,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I alway knew it was something different about this guy
- 9:26Speaker 1: because he had an opinion and he didn't mind telling
- 9:29Speaker 1: you his opinion. And that's not a bad thing, because
- 9:31Speaker 1: I think in life you have to define who you are.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Because I always tell people what you what you do
- 9:35Speaker 1: in your twenties is what you're gonna be making money
- 9:37Speaker 1: in your forties and fifties. So he was defining them
- 9:40Speaker 1: back then and today he's on the car right now
- 9:43Speaker 1: to talk about a lot of the successes now Vitamin water,
- 9:46Speaker 1: my man, I've heard a lot of people make a
- 9:49Speaker 1: lot of money off that, but you were one of
- 9:51Speaker 1: the original investors. A lot of people followed you into
- 9:54Speaker 1: that water hunt sir, uh you know I got lucky man.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Stop stopping. Stop man at talking to people like him,
- 10:08Speaker 1: because I'm telling you something. See see, I saw him
- 10:11Speaker 1: when he was young. I saw him when he was young. Okay,
- 10:14Speaker 1: hoop was his main game, all right, but it was
- 10:17Speaker 1: something about he had the ability to communicate. He's very
- 10:19Speaker 1: personable and he is a thinker, you know what. You
- 10:22Speaker 1: have a look at people and you go they're thinking
- 10:24Speaker 1: about something that they're talking to me, but they're thinking
- 10:26Speaker 1: about something else. So he's very observant. And so so
- 10:30Speaker 1: when he said lucky, I don't buy that. I don't
- 10:32Speaker 1: buy that because he man, I need you need to
- 10:35Speaker 1: stop you go down you hey, because because the fact
- 10:45Speaker 1: that that's why I wanted you. I'm glad you took
- 10:47Speaker 1: time to be on the show. And I'm glad that
- 10:49Speaker 1: because it's individuals like you, because people see one side
- 10:52Speaker 1: of you. They see you know, social media post on you,
- 10:55Speaker 1: they see you on NBA. But I'm just telling you
- 10:57Speaker 1: this is not something just train of you've been or
- 11:00Speaker 1: what you're doing is not something automatic you've been. I
- 11:04Speaker 1: always tell Peo about magic and magic Johnson didn't drible
- 11:07Speaker 1: the basketball. He was going to be an entrepreneur. And
- 11:09Speaker 1: I said the same thing about that about you be
- 11:12Speaker 1: you were gonna be an entrepreneur. You're gonna be in
- 11:15Speaker 1: some creative lane of life. It just God gave you
- 11:18Speaker 1: a unique talent that was driven into basketball. You turned
- 11:21Speaker 1: it into a scholarship. You turned it into a thirteen
- 11:24Speaker 1: year NBA career, and you're making money and you enjoying it.
- 11:27Speaker 1: That's what money making. Conversations about balance lifestyle. You had
- 11:31Speaker 1: time for your children. That's balance lifestyle. Man, your special dude.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I will not let you leave this show not knowing
- 11:39Speaker 1: that from Rouhan McDonald. No, I appreciate that, man, I
- 11:43Speaker 1: appreciate that. Sean uh I was saying, you're suggesting not
- 11:48Speaker 1: being a phrase itself, right right? You know, um the
- 11:53Speaker 1: vitamin want to deal that can? Because I was out
- 11:57Speaker 1: of my sprite deer. Uh I wanted to be my
- 12:00Speaker 1: own agent, and people thought I was crazy, But you
- 12:05Speaker 1: know I was also like, what is what is spride
- 12:08Speaker 1: gonna do for me? You know ten years from now? Right?
- 12:13Speaker 1: You know, I'd rather be with it. I'd rather be
- 12:15Speaker 1: with a company nobody know about get less and you know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: work with the marketing team to help time blow it
- 12:22Speaker 1: up and uh so with vitamin water. It was when
- 12:26Speaker 1: the deal came and I was just like, hey man,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm making enough money playing basketball. I'll take it in equity.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Super smart for a dummy kid. But it was like,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you know, you take chances. Um, all right, I'm gonna
- 12:42Speaker 1: be my own agent at twenty years old. But I
- 12:45Speaker 1: need to step out of this business of what everything
- 12:48Speaker 1: is traditional and everything that I've heard and wanted from
- 12:51Speaker 1: my agent. I need to look. I need to look
- 12:54Speaker 1: outside his eyes and hang you from a business standpoint
- 12:58Speaker 1: and figure out how the bastard business around basketball. You know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: big shout out to Magic Johnson. And you know a
- 13:06Speaker 1: lot of the guys who were veteran guys in the
- 13:10Speaker 1: NBA at the time, you know, because they were, they
- 13:12Speaker 1: were always encouraging young people that, hey man, you don't
- 13:16Speaker 1: need an agent, you don't need this, you don't need that.
- 13:18Speaker 1: So it's just like if you learn from people who say,
- 13:20Speaker 1: especially your eldiness, you can create opportunities. And for me,
- 13:25Speaker 1: it was all about nobody's doing this, let me try
- 13:28Speaker 1: this right. As soon as somebody said no, it made
- 13:32Speaker 1: me work harder, study harder to prove them wrong. And
- 13:36Speaker 1: that's why you're a vitamin water mogul. Ever and everybody
- 13:44Speaker 1: following the met be doing that. I'm doing I'm doing
- 13:47Speaker 1: it too, just writing checks out there. Let me let
- 13:50Speaker 1: me the match you this now, you know, because you
- 13:52Speaker 1: wanted to talk about technology and there's a there's a
- 13:56Speaker 1: huge gap that you that you want to make you're
- 13:58Speaker 1: trying to close. How are you playing a role in
- 14:00Speaker 1: closing the racial gap? Because I've always been a proponent
- 14:05Speaker 1: a person that says that, you know, we buy technology,
- 14:09Speaker 1: you know, African Americans we buy smartphones, we buy we
- 14:13Speaker 1: buy Apple phones, you know, but sometimes we don't get
- 14:15Speaker 1: credit for that. We don't get credit for being technically savvy,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and we are. So how do you how do you?
- 14:22Speaker 1: How do you are you using your brand to close
- 14:24Speaker 1: that gap of information? Uh? For me, it's just about
- 14:29Speaker 1: you to right. You gotta hire, you gotta invest, you
- 14:32Speaker 1: gotta find the people who who are doing it. Um.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I was just visiting with a lady who's been in
- 14:41Speaker 1: for thirty five years in our last and she's been
- 14:47Speaker 1: she's been pushing technology for thirty five years, and now
- 14:51Speaker 1: it's finally out of place where people can well, we
- 14:56Speaker 1: can actually get some credit, right, But we have all
- 14:59Speaker 1: these pioneers, is, all these hidden figures throughout our history,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and we've just never embraced them. And now that everything
- 15:07Speaker 1: is a buzz word, right, it's almost like we always
- 15:12Speaker 1: think that we're late. Right, we're not late to technology
- 15:16Speaker 1: because technology is going to be the baseline of this world.
- 15:21Speaker 1: We just don't support and rally around our elders and
- 15:26Speaker 1: rally around the people that have done it and then
- 15:29Speaker 1: pay it back. And so for me, I think that
- 15:33Speaker 1: you know, tech is tech is a it's a buzz word,
- 15:36Speaker 1: but it's something that you know, we should be teaching
- 15:39Speaker 1: our kids now, said a better on the iPad than
- 15:44Speaker 1: we are. So we should be teaching them how to code.
- 15:46Speaker 1: We should be teaching them how to design, right, we
- 15:49Speaker 1: should be putting them in design camps things like that. Um,
- 15:53Speaker 1: you know, even if much as even when they play sports,
- 15:57Speaker 1: they got to take art, they gotta take a length
- 16:00Speaker 1: and they're gonna have to do something with that computer, right,
- 16:03Speaker 1: because the way the world is going and the way
- 16:07Speaker 1: the opportunity is, you know, you never know, you never
- 16:10Speaker 1: know what kid is gonna Once they learned how to code,
- 16:13Speaker 1: out of South Essential may wind up be a five
- 16:17Speaker 1: time off thing and code. Hey man, I'm gonna call
- 16:20Speaker 1: you professor now, your professor Davis. Professor Davis, because you
- 16:25Speaker 1: know you've got that little rhythm now right there be
- 16:27Speaker 1: you got that little rhythm. I win is he is
- 16:28Speaker 1: her teacher? Year is here, my professor, I felt like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: because my degree is in mathematics. So so I'm I
- 16:35Speaker 1: fight for for the for the knowledge that that I've
- 16:38Speaker 1: been able to obtain. My daughter, you know, she's a
- 16:41Speaker 1: she's in a freshman year and going to the second
- 16:43Speaker 1: year of college. But kind of good jineer that she
- 16:45Speaker 1: came to said, Dad, I don't like that. I want
- 16:47Speaker 1: to Can I go into gamification? I say, you can
- 16:50Speaker 1: do what you want to do, Okay, just just stay
- 16:52Speaker 1: in that lane of education and technology. And and she's
- 16:56Speaker 1: she's happy now. And when I hear you talk professor
- 17:00Speaker 1: professor Davis, you know, Professor David, but here talked. Man.
- 17:04Speaker 1: See what I'm gonna do, a money making conversation tour.
- 17:06Speaker 1: That's what I'm gonna do. It's gonna happen. I'm gonna
- 17:09Speaker 1: I have to invite you. Man, you gotta go. First
- 17:13Speaker 1: of all, you're gonna be funny, You're gonna be funny, okay,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and you and you go and you got money, that's key,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and you and you and you and you stop. You
- 17:22Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, I got cause I'm looking because
- 17:24Speaker 1: you know, it's it's interesting thing about it. Women are
- 17:27Speaker 1: so dominating the world, and especially the African American uh president,
- 17:32Speaker 1: because African American men are kind of like falling back,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you know, where the women are the new stars. Afri
- 17:38Speaker 1: American women are the new stars of the militia time,
- 17:41Speaker 1: which is amazing. And so so I've been having trouble
- 17:45Speaker 1: finding that guy, man, Professor Davis Man. I gotta, I
