- 0:05Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Aligned and
- 0:08Thriving. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:11Today I want to chat to you about something that I think all
- 0:14of us, especially in schools and teams, have experienced at some
- 0:18point. Now, this topic was actually
- 0:20brought to you by one of our listeners.
- 0:23They messaged in and asked for an episode about it.
- 0:26So that's exactly what we are doing.
- 0:29An episode about something that can be a little bit frustrating
- 0:33but is so important if we want to create a positive and
- 0:37effective workplace. And that is, don't go to
- 0:41leadership or other staff with a problem without also bringing a
- 0:45solution. Sounds really simple, right?
- 0:49But seriously, how many times have you been hit with a problem
- 0:54just like a complaint? And then you think, OK, So what
- 0:58exactly do you want me to do about that?
- 1:00You know the vibe. I mean, people come in, their
- 1:03eyes are wide and they're telling you all the things that
- 1:06are wrong, but they have no idea what to do next.
- 1:09Like no suggestions, no ideas. They just verbally dump the
- 1:14problem on you and expect you to just solve it for them.
- 1:18And honestly, it's exhausting. And it can just be super
- 1:24frustrating because we are all human.
- 1:27How many times do I have to say that on these podcasts?
- 1:29But we are human beings. We all have jobs to do.
- 1:32We all have our own lives to live.
- 1:35We are, we have our own needs, our own wants, just like
- 1:38everybody else. Why?
- 1:41Why do we then need all of your problems?
- 1:45OK, if you want your meetings to be at a particular time, that's
- 1:51that's great. But instead of just saying, oh,
- 1:54I hate this time, well, why don't you go and tell the person
- 1:59and come up with some suggestions of when you want the
- 2:02meetings and why that time would work for you better like come
- 2:08with a reason, come with a plan. Because if you don't, then what
- 2:14is someone? Like, say it's someone in
- 2:16leadership, what are they supposed to do?
- 2:17Just wave the magic wand and make all of your wishes come
- 2:20true? Tada, you may have everything
- 2:23you want and so can everyone else.
- 2:25I mean, does that happen in the real world?
- 2:28I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but no.
- 2:31This approach is not about being harsh or dismissive, but it's
- 2:35about building a culture where everyone helps to carry the
- 2:39load. That's what an effective team
- 2:42looks like. It's called distributed
- 2:45leadership. Everyone helps out, everyone
- 2:48contributes to solutions, and everyone feels part of something
- 2:53bigger. Some of the best schools that I
- 2:56have worked in and the ones that just flow beautifully, they all
- 3:01have this kind of culture. The culture where everyone
- 3:04pitches in, shares ideas, and just supports each other.
- 3:09And it's what honestly makes the difference between a place where
- 3:12people thrive and one where people are literally just
- 3:15surviving. OK.
- 3:18And I have worked in every type of system within our state, and
- 3:25I have worked in a variety of schooling environments, from low
- 3:28socioeconomic to a higher socioeconomic.
- 3:32So I have done the things. I've done primary, I've done
- 3:36high school, I've got all of the comparisons for you.
- 3:39But what I'm saying is within every educational facility,
- 3:43there is a team of people in there, OK?
- 3:47And the way that they work best is if you have that idea of
- 3:52everyone is part of the team, we are all responsible, we are all
- 3:57working together. This is a team because team
- 4:01together everyone achieves more is true.
- 4:05Again, there's no eye in team. No there isn't.
- 4:09Yes, I am someone who's been on leadership teams before, but I
- 4:12never view myself as someone who is above a teacher.
- 4:17No, we are a team. I am at the shoulder with you
- 4:21all the time. I am experiencing things with
- 4:24you. I am there to work with you and
- 4:27support you. So please don't think that
- 4:31everyone in those types of positions are going to be, I
- 4:36mean, some of them will act like they are better than you, but
- 4:40I'm not one of those people. Oh, I said I don't, I don't
- 4:43think I am. And those who work with me and
- 4:45know me, I hope I don't come across that way.
- 4:49I try to be that person who is there to support and care and,
- 4:53and work with you, but it is really hard to work with people
- 4:58if they're just coming at you with problems and don't come
- 5:01with any solutions. And that can happen in any
- 5:04workplace. You know, the people that are
- 5:06just going to turn up and complain and they don't have any
- 5:10ideas on how to fix it. They just want you to fix it.
- 5:12What do you want me to do about that?
- 5:14Hey, you want, you want me to run that staff meeting?
- 5:18Well, how am I supposed to do that?
- 5:19When do I have time to plan that?
- 5:21Maybe we could talk about it together in a nicer manner and
- 5:25make the plan together. It just it doesn't.
- 5:29And I'm being honest. Like it's easy to get really
- 5:32caught up and be the person that just complaints.
- 5:35But let's not get caught up in that.
- 5:38And let's not be the person who brings the toxic energy, the
- 5:42negativity, the no solutions. Let's not be that person.
- 5:47We need to be the kind of person that helps people.
- 5:51That type of toxic energy doesn't help anyone.
- 5:54Not you, not your colleagues, and certainly not your
- 5:57leadership team. We've talked about toxic energy
- 6:00before and how it drains the whole team and it makes
- 6:03everything harder. And this is one of those
- 6:07situations if you want to be part of the solution, not the
- 6:10problem. The mindset shift there is huge.
- 6:15So how do you actually bring solutions and not just problems?
- 6:20Let me give you some ideas. So tip #1 pause and reflect
- 6:26before you speak. Now I feel like I'm talking to
- 6:29myself here because I really need to bite my tongue
- 6:33sometimes. So pause and reflect before you
- 6:36actually speak. Before you go and run to
- 6:40leadership or your team with a problem, stop and ask yourself
- 6:46what's the problem? Why is it a problem?
- 6:49What have I, what have I already done to fix said problem, and
- 6:54what could I do to improve it. If you really can't come up with
- 6:58any ideas, try brainstorming with a few people first if you
- 7:03need to, even if they're not perfect solutions, just come up
- 7:06with a couple of ideas that the goal is just to show that you're
- 7:09actually trying and you're thinking and you're willing to
- 7:13help. Tip #2 Bring options, not just
- 7:19complaints. When you're talking about the
- 7:21issue, come prepared with some options.
- 7:24So for example, the meeting time is really tricky for me because
- 7:29of X. Would there be any chance of
- 7:32considering Y or Z instead? Or the current system that we
- 7:37have for tracking attendance is really confusing.
- 7:40Could we maybe try A or B to simplify it?
- 7:44Like if you're offering options, you're showing your leadership
- 7:48team and the rest of your team members that you're engaged and
- 7:51you're proactive. You're not just passive and
- 7:54skating along or reactive. Tip #3 take ownership wherever
- 8:02you can. So if there's something that you
- 8:05could do yourself to help to help solve the problem, say so,
- 8:09take ownership. It's really powerful.
- 8:11For example, Oh, I noticed the communication around that
- 8:15event's been really unclear. I'm really happy to draught a
- 8:17new template and just send it through for the newsletter if
- 8:19that helps. Just small little things like
- 8:23that can make a massive difference in team dynamics.
- 8:27It's the same as like putting your hand up to cover a Judy
- 8:30when we've rocked up and gone, Oh no, we didn't cover that
- 8:33Judy. Well, instead of turning around
- 8:34and going, well, I'm not doing it.
- 8:36You'd be like, oh, I'll do it today, but would anyone mind?
- 8:39Maybe I could do a swap like something like that?
- 8:42We'll be more than happy to help if you're coming with a
- 8:44solution. Tip #4 remember the big picture.
- 8:49We're all human, OK? This is really easy to forget
- 8:54sometimes. That's why I keep, like, hopping
- 8:56on about it. But your leaders, your
- 8:58colleagues, like, they're all human too.
- 9:00They have good days, they have bad days.
- 9:03They juggle multiple demands just like you.
- 9:08Showing empathy and understanding goes a long way.
- 9:14OK, If anyone can come to the table with that mindset, like oh
- 9:19I'm here to help, not just to complain.
- 9:22Everything just gets so much better.
- 9:24I know. Again, talking from my own
- 9:27experience and perspective. There has honestly been some
- 9:30mornings where I have already like been up since 3:00 AM in
- 9:35the morning because a child has woken up and refused to go back
- 9:38to bed. So I'm dealing with tiredness.
- 9:41I have forgotten to eat breakfast because I was in such
- 9:44a rush to get everything organised because I was having
- 9:46to deal with said child and trying to get said other child
- 9:50dressed and ready and in the car whilst the other child is trying
- 9:53to wrestle other child. Whilst trying to also make
- 9:55everyone's lunches and get everyone out the door and into
- 9:58the car. And then once you're in the car,
- 10:01forgetting to get lunch. So having to stop on the way to
- 10:03buy lunches because you've missed the window for ordering
- 10:06lunches or you've forgotten that you couldn't order lunches that
- 10:09day. So you're going to have to sort
- 10:10that out on the way to work, plus get because you forgot to
- 10:12fill your car up. Then you really need to get a
- 10:14coffee because you've also had no breakfast, but it's too late
- 10:17for you to get a coffee. So then you need to get to work
- 10:19and you need to unpack the car, get said children into an office
- 10:22space or a quiet space and get them quiet and probably make
- 10:26sure that they've eaten something or been medicated like
- 10:28one of my children. Follow through with all of that
- 10:31procedure and then try and figure out if you've got time to
- 10:35make yourself a coffee before you need to go outside for
- 10:37morning duty. And then someone turns up with a
- 10:39problem. Wow, I've literally just gotten
- 10:43to work and if you looked at my frazzled face, you could
- 10:49probably see that I may not have had the best of mornings.
- 10:52Or if you could hear my children yelling at each other in my
- 10:56office space, then you would probably take a few steps back
- 11:00and try and come up with an answer before you ask me a
- 11:03question. Which I know sounds hard
- 11:06sometimes, but maybe that's not the time that you come and tell
- 11:10someone something that's probably that.
- 11:13If it's really urgent, that's different.
- 11:16But that maybe that's that time where you pause and reflect.
- 11:18Is this something that I really need to deal with now or could
- 11:22it wait? I might talk to her later.
- 11:25It seems that she's a little bit frazzled.
- 11:27Or maybe just say, are you OK? Is there anything I could do to
- 11:31help? Yes please.
- 11:32I've had no breakfast. Could you please go check the
- 11:35fridge for some yoghurt or something?
- 11:38Just the little things. This is why I've told you so
- 11:42many times that we are all human.
- 11:45That's literally just an average morning in my household.
- 11:47No, it does. It does get better.
- 11:49I'm not saying my kids are like that all the time, but just
- 11:52remember that we are all human and we all have lives outside of
- 11:56that space. You may not have kids, you may
- 11:58have a partner, you may live with friends, you may live with
- 12:02your dog. I've worked with someone whose
- 12:03dog got ran over on the way to work, so they had to then go
- 12:06home because their neighbour had rung and they were hysterical.
- 12:09And it's like, that's OK, I'll cover your class.
- 12:11You go do what you need to do. You need to take your dog to the
- 12:14vet. Like pets are family too and I
- 12:17get that. We don't forget that for people.
- 12:21So Please remember again we are human beings too so remember the
- 12:27big picture. This coming with that mindset
- 12:30that we are here to help and not just to complain.
- 12:34Tip #5 Communicate clearly and respectfully so how you present
- 12:42your concern matters. So stay calm, be respectful and
- 12:48constructive. Avoid the blame game and lots of
- 12:53negativity. Try and frame your issue with
- 12:56curiosity. Like oh, I'm wondering if we
- 12:58could try or my wondering is this, this, this, or I've
- 13:03noticed this challenge and I'm thinking that these might be
- 13:06some suggestions that we could improve it.
- 13:09This invites some responses and collaboration rather than people
- 13:14getting up and defensive about it.
- 13:16So try wording it that way. I want to be clear, this isn't
- 13:22about pretending that everything's perfect or ignoring
- 13:25real problems. Far from it.
- 13:27Problems exist and they all need to be addressed, but how we
- 13:32address them makes all the difference.
- 13:34So if you just bring the problem and expect someone else to just
- 13:37fix it for you, you're helping to create burnout, whether it's
- 13:41for yourself or for someone else.
- 13:44It's it's a frustration. It's it's creating that culture
- 13:48of blame. But if you come with solutions,
- 13:51even just small ones, and a willingness to work together to
- 13:55help build a train A-Team, that's stronger, more connected,
- 13:58and more effective. Because the truth is there's no
- 14:01leader and no colleague has time to be your full time problem
- 14:04solver. We all have our plates full
- 14:07already. And that's why that model of
- 14:09distributed leadership is so powerful.
- 14:12Because when everyone's sharing the responsibility for solving
- 14:15challenges well, the whole team wins.
- 14:18So if you're someone who tends to bring those big problems
- 14:21without solutions, that's OK, We all slip up.
- 14:24I mean, I've done it before too guilty.
- 14:26But the key is awareness. Start to notice your habits.
- 14:30Start to challenge yourself to try a different approach next
- 14:34time and and try this instead. The next time you are about to
- 14:39complain, pause and ask yourself, what could I suggest
- 14:43instead? How could I help fix this?
- 14:47You might surprise yourself, but before I finish today, I want to
- 14:51leave you with some journal prompts to help you reflect on
- 14:54how you approach problems and solutions within your team.
- 14:57So if you've got some time to sit down and think about it, I
- 15:00think it'd be really good to help you and developing your
- 15:03mindset as well. So how do I usually respond when
- 15:06I encounter a problem at work? Do I focus on the problem or
- 15:11finding solutions #2 Can I recall a time when I brought a
- 15:16problem and a solution to my team?
- 15:19How did that change the outcome #3 What fears or barriers stop
- 15:24me from proposing solutions? Instead of just complaining #4
- 15:31How can I practise distributed leadership in my current role,
- 15:35even in small ways #5 who are my teammates or leaders that I can
- 15:42collaborate with to brainstorm solutions rather than just voice
- 15:46problems? Number six, what is one problem
- 15:50I'm currently facing that I can reframe by brainstorming at
- 15:54least two possible solutions before I go and raise it?
- 15:59So have a think about those things and have some time to
- 16:02reflect building a positive team culture.
- 16:05It takes time and effort from all of us, but when we all come
- 16:10ready to contribute solutions, support one another, and take
- 16:13ownership, the whole workplace becomes a better place just for
- 16:17everyone. So again, guys, thanks for
- 16:21listening and for being a part of this journey with me.
- 16:24If you've found this episode to be helpful, don't forget to like
- 16:27it. Share it with a friend or a
- 16:29colleague. Share it with your leadership
- 16:30team if you think they might need to hear this message as
