- 0:00Acts chapter 15. Some men came down from Judea
- 0:03and began teaching the brethren, Unless you are circumcised,
- 0:06according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.
- 0:09And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with
- 0:12them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas, and some
- 0:15others of them, should go up to Jerusalem.
- 0:16To the apostles and elders concerning this issue.
- 0:19Therefore, being sent on their way by the church, they were
- 0:21passing through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in
- 0:24detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and were bringing
- 0:27great joy to all the brethren. When they arrived at Jerusalem,
- 0:30they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders,
- 0:33and they reported all that God had done with them.
- 0:36But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood
- 0:38up, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to direct
- 0:42them to observe the law of Moses.
- 0:44The apostles and the elders came together to look into this
- 0:46matter. After there had been much
- 0:48debate, Peter stood up and said to them, Brethren, you know that
- 0:51in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my
- 0:54mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and
- 0:56believe. And God, who knows the heart,
- 0:59testified to them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also
- 1:02did to us, and He made no distinction between us and them,
- 1:05cleansing their hearts by faith. Now, therefore, why do you put
- 1:08God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples A yoke
- 1:12which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
- 1:15But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord
- 1:17Jesus in the same way as they also are.
- 1:21All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas
- 1:24and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had
- 1:26done through them among the Gentiles.
- 1:29After they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying,
- 1:31Brethren, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first
- 1:35concerned himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people
- 1:38for his name. With this the words of the
- 1:40prophets agree just as it is written.
- 1:43After these things I will return, and I will rebuild the
- 1:45Tabernacle of David which has fallen, and I will rebuild its
- 1:48ruins, and I will restore it, so that the rest of mankind may
- 1:51seek the Lord. And all the Gentiles who are
- 1:53called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things
- 1:56known from long ago. Therefore it is my judgement
- 1:59that we do not trouble the those who are turning to God from
- 2:02among the Gentiles, but that we write to them that they abstain
- 2:04from things contaminated by idols and from fornication, and
- 2:08from what is strangled and from blood.
- 2:10For Moses from ancient generations, as in every city,
- 2:12those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogue's every
- 2:15Sabbath, Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders with
- 2:18the whole church, to choose men from among them to send to
- 2:21Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. Judas called Barsabbas and
- 2:24Silas, leading men among the brethren.
- 2:27And they sent this letter by them, the apostles and the
- 2:30brethren who are elders, to the brethren in Antioch, in Syria
- 2:32and Silesia, who are from the Gentiles.
- 2:35Greetings. Since we have heard that some of
- 2:37our number, to whom we gave no instruction, have disturbed you
- 2:40with their words on settling your souls, it seemed good to
- 2:43us, having become of one mind, to select men to send to you
- 2:46with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their
- 2:49lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:51Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will also
- 2:54report the same things by word of mouth.
- 2:57For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you
- 3:00no greater burden than these essentials, that you abstain
- 3:03from things sacrificed to idols and from blood, and from things
- 3:06strangled and from fornication. If you keep yourselves free from
- 3:09such things, you will do well. Farewell.
- 3:12So when they were sent away, they went down to Antioch, and
- 3:14having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the
- 3:17letter. When they had read it, they
- 3:18rejoiced because of its encouragement.
- 3:20Judas and Silas also, being prophets themselves, encouraged
- 3:23and strengthen the brethren with a lengthy message.
- 3:26After they had spent time there, they were sent away from the
- 3:29brethren in peace to those who had sent them out.
- 3:32But it seemed good to Silas to remain there.
- 3:34But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching
- 3:37with many others, also the word of the Lord.
- 3:40After some days Paul said to Barnabas, Let us return and
- 3:43visit the brethren in every city in which we proclaim the word of
- 3:45the Lord, and see how they are. Barnabas wanted to take John
- 3:49called Mark along with them also, but Paul kept insisting
- 3:52that they should not take him along, who had deserted them in
- 3:55Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.
- 3:58And there occurred such a sharp disagreement that they separated
- 4:01from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed
- 4:04away to Cyprus. But Paul chose Silas and left,
- 4:07being committed by the brethren to the grace of the Lord, And he
- 4:10was travelling through Syria and Silesia, strengthening the
- 4:12churches.
