- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Mark chapter 13, several of
- 0:46Jesus disciples asked him to tell them what signs they can
- 0:49look for, that the end is near, that his Kingdom will come in
- 0:52full on earth. Jesus begins to expound to them
- 0:55what is to come. He tells them that there will be
- 0:58many people that come in his name attempting to deceive them,
- 1:01but that they should not be deceived.
- 1:03He tells them that they will. They will hear of wars and
- 1:06rumors of wars, but this is not yet the end.
- 1:09He tells them that they will be persecuted, they will be
- 1:12delivered over to the courts, they will be flogged in the
- 1:14synagogues, and they'll go before government officials
- 1:17because of Jesus. And this will be a testimony to
- 1:20those leaders and those persecutors.
- 1:23He tells them that the gospel must be preached to all the
- 1:25nations. In other words, the news of the
- 1:27Gospel will expand globally before Christ returns.
- 1:31Jesus then tells them that families will be broken up,
- 1:35brothers will betray one another, and a period of intense
- 1:38turmoil and calamity will come on the earth.
- 1:41And what is the responsibility of the believer in all of this?
- 1:45What should the Christian do as he sees the world crumbling
- 1:48around him? Because the reality is, we have
- 1:50seen these signs. We've seen wars and rumors of
- 1:54wars. We've seen persecution.
- 1:56We've seen betrayal, we've seen false Christs and deceivers,
- 1:59we've seen calamity and turmoil. So what should be our response?
- 2:04Well, the text is clear. We should stand firm amidst
- 2:08persecution, participate in gospel proclamation, rely on the
- 2:13power of the Holy Spirit during times of uncertainty.
- 2:17But all of these things can be summed up with verse 33, which
- 2:21says take heed, keep on the alert, for you do not know when
- 2:26the appointed time will come. In other words, be ready.
- 2:31That's Jesus instruction to his disciples and that is his
- 2:34instruction to us. Three times in the last three
- 2:37verses he tells them to be on the alert.
- 2:40We must stay awake. We must not be lulled to sleep
- 2:43by either the pleasures or the pain of this world.
- 2:47Jesus is coming soon, so stand firm in him.
- 2:51Live for him with boldness and without reservation.
- 2:54Proclaim the good news of the gospel wherever you go, and do
- 2:57not be shaken when the world appears to be falling apart
- 3:00around you. The King is coming soon.
- 3:04Be ready.
