- 2:05Speaker 1: can't keep talking to the same people. If you want
- 2:07Speaker 1: to be successful, you gotta be able to talk to
- 2:09Speaker 1: people you don't know, then gain respect from them. Then
- 2:12Speaker 1: they give any information about things that you don't know.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And guess what you will eventually become, as they say,

- 3:26Speaker 1: me and being my guests, deliver information about career planning, motivation,
- 3:31Speaker 1: financial literacy, and how they leave their balanced life. My
- 3:34Speaker 1: guess is on the line. This first time we spoke,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I did a little short chat before we got online
- 3:39Speaker 1: here just to break the ice, let him know I
- 3:41Speaker 1: love him and respect him. My first next guest is
- 3:44Speaker 1: a husband, a son, a brother, a believer in Christ,
- 3:49Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, and they starting outside linebacker for the New
- 3:53Speaker 1: York Jets. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation, Brandon Copeland.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I aw you doing man, pretty good brand, Okay, Brandon.
- 4:03Speaker 1: You know I always always go through the bios. I
- 4:05Speaker 1: really try to take my time and get a little nuggets.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And so when I see something like a believer in Christ,
- 4:12Speaker 1: that means that that's something that's important to you because
- 4:15Speaker 1: it's part of your bio. Why is it important for
- 4:17Speaker 1: you to say that and have it's part of your bio? Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I think, Well, I know I would literally not be
- 4:24Speaker 1: where I'm at today without that, Um, without God. I mean,
- 4:28Speaker 1: there's so many times in my life, you know, if
- 4:32Speaker 1: you look at the soup all, but then also bigger
- 4:35Speaker 1: than life, bigger than football. Um, there's so many different
- 4:39Speaker 1: things that I've seen and witnessed and just a miracle
- 4:44Speaker 1: of life in general. You know, I know for a
- 4:47Speaker 1: fact that I would not be here without without his blessing.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And uh, yeah, that that's I think. We look at
- 4:56Speaker 1: even simple stuff like just the mindset, I'm blessed what
- 5:00Speaker 1: you see And you speak to a lot of people
- 5:02Speaker 1: in your in your show, and I'm sure you leave
- 5:05Speaker 1: a lot of those conversations like wow, like that person
- 5:08Speaker 1: there's something different about him, like that the way he
- 5:11Speaker 1: takes information and instead of it letting, instead of it
- 5:17Speaker 1: being a deterrent to him or an obstacle to him,
- 5:20Speaker 1: he turns out into motivations and how he or she
- 5:22Speaker 1: turns out in the motivation somehow, right like that? To me,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it is a simple blessing, right because I could have
- 5:29Speaker 1: a personality that took that and use that as an
- 5:33Speaker 1: excuse or an obstacle for why I wasn't great or
- 5:36Speaker 1: why I couldn't make it so. Um. So yeah, that's
- 5:39Speaker 1: where everything starts. Well, you know, it's interesting because in
- 5:42Speaker 1: the game of football, especially professional football, faith is a
- 5:46Speaker 1: big component. You see a lot of players and a
- 5:48Speaker 1: lot of players sharing prayer before especially after the game.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Why why do you feel it's such a strong route
- 5:56Speaker 1: and uh, the game of professional football faith. Wow, that's
- 6:01Speaker 1: a that's a great question. I think. I think there's
- 6:07Speaker 1: it starts with your upbringing. Um And I think that
- 6:10Speaker 1: you actually see a lot of teams praying together before
- 6:14Speaker 1: a game. Um. You know do you, like you said,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you have this prayer circles, you have your Bible studies
- 6:20Speaker 1: on teams and stuff like that, and those just select
- 6:22Speaker 1: group of guys that choose to do those. But then
- 6:25Speaker 1: even as like a locker room, we pray together before
- 6:28Speaker 1: and after every single bang, right, which I think is
- 6:30Speaker 1: pretty powerful. Um And And ultimately you know, there I
- 6:36Speaker 1: was actually just having a conversation about understanding about the
- 6:39Speaker 1: battle of preseason and going into a preseason camp and
- 6:44Speaker 1: football being one of the most Uh, this is going
- 6:47Speaker 1: into year seven for me, but my rookie year, I
- 6:50Speaker 1: realized that football was one of the most cutthroat but
- 6:54Speaker 1: beautiful sports at the same time. And the fact that
- 6:57Speaker 1: like you literally can sit in the room where there's
- 7:02Speaker 1: seven linebackers, right and you know they're only four of
- 7:05Speaker 1: you are going to make the team, but you still
- 7:07Speaker 1: find a way to be friends and still find a
- 7:09Speaker 1: way to help each other. Like I know that I'm
- 7:11Speaker 1: literally fighting to take your job or you're not going
- 7:15Speaker 1: to be able to pay your bills this year from
- 7:17Speaker 1: the NFL per se specifically because me, but we still
- 7:23Speaker 1: find a way to coach each other up and help
- 7:27Speaker 1: each other out and laugh and joke off the field
- 7:29Speaker 1: and build relationships. And I think that that all has
- 7:31Speaker 1: to do with faith, right. I think one of the
- 7:35Speaker 1: things the pieces of advice a God gave to me
- 7:37Speaker 1: my ricky year was like, you can't stress what you
- 7:39Speaker 1: can't control, and some of the decisions made, especially in
- 7:43Speaker 1: the NFL locker room and the businesses sports, are well
- 7:48Speaker 1: out of your control. And those that's all up to God.
- 7:51Speaker 1: All you can do is work as hard as possible, prepare, train,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and and leave it all out there on the field
- 7:56Speaker 1: and let God take care of the rest, right and
- 7:59Speaker 1: for good or bad. You know, you might look at
- 8:03Speaker 1: a decision as bad in the moment, but it might
- 8:06Speaker 1: be you know, it's God's plan, it's God's work, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: in the long run, it's it's all in in your
- 8:14Speaker 1: favor in my opinion. So absolutely, that's why I wanted
- 8:18Speaker 1: to bring that up because you know, football is such
- 8:21Speaker 1: an interesting sport, you know, because faith plays are such
- 8:24Speaker 1: a major play in it, and then they go out
- 8:26Speaker 1: on the field and somehow faith doesn't play a role
- 8:31Speaker 1: in the tackling. It's like, you know what I'm saying,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it's a guy coming that you branded uh for for
- 8:40Speaker 1: four to speed you. You you look at them going, okay,
- 8:44Speaker 1: really you you're gonna come at me like that. I'm
- 8:46Speaker 1: gonna come at you like that, and we're gonna man
- 8:48Speaker 1: up in a minute at this yard line. And so
- 8:51Speaker 1: that's why it's a really an amazing sport because it's
- 8:54Speaker 1: a blessing, but it also has a physical timeline tied
- 8:57Speaker 1: to it, and I think the one in my tone,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I realize you're an undrafted free agent going to your
- 9:03Speaker 1: bio and you said, I'm going into my seventh year
- 9:05Speaker 1: in the league, and you know how it is, So
- 9:07Speaker 1: every year you've been grinding, grinding, So faith has has
- 9:12Speaker 1: has played a major role because guess what, you just
- 9:14Speaker 1: never know what happens. You know we're talking negative, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: you just never know. And so now your seventh year,
- 9:20Speaker 1: where are you in perspective to all of this? What's
- 9:23Speaker 1: the next step for you? Yeah? I think UM. For
- 9:28Speaker 1: me personally, I always say when you people ask what year,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and I say, going into year seven? God willing you know, um?
- 9:34Speaker 1: And I really believe that. UM. I literally take things
- 9:38Speaker 1: one day at a time. So for me personally, football
- 9:42Speaker 1: has always been a means to an end. Uh. In
- 9:45Speaker 1: high school, I remember eating football as my way to
- 9:48Speaker 1: get to college. Uh. Then college it was okay, hey,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I can take this and get to the NFL, and
- 9:56Speaker 1: that will be my way to start my own empire,
- 9:59Speaker 1: build my own is going to create my own culture,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know, change people's lives, all that stuff, and that
- 10:04Speaker 1: would be startup capital. So for me, now in year seven,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you know, I'm I'm in the midst of actually creating
- 10:13Speaker 1: that empire. I'm doing real estate. I'm I'm a professor
- 10:17Speaker 1: of financial literacy and my alma monitor, I have a foundation.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I'm I'm working on production company and producing content and
- 10:25Speaker 1: stuff like that. Um so I'm I'm. Year seven for
- 10:30Speaker 1: me is one of the culmination of a lot of
- 10:34Speaker 1: hard work. I finally got the chance to start this
- 10:36Speaker 1: past season and had my best season yet and now
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'm playing on building on that this this season and
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know, tearing it up on the field first and foremost,
- 10:46Speaker 1: but then also really hustling up off the field to
- 10:50Speaker 1: create that empire and that financial freedom for myself and
- 10:53Speaker 1: my family for the rest of our lives. And that
- 10:57Speaker 1: is my my ultimate goal is when I'm done for ball,
- 11:01Speaker 1: to be able to tell people this. I used to
- 11:03Speaker 1: get shy and saying this, and I used to feel
- 11:05Speaker 1: a little, you know, reserved by saying this. But I'll
- 11:10Speaker 1: pick back the cockiness or the arrogance that it comes
- 11:14Speaker 1: off as, and I'll explain it. But I literally want
- 11:16Speaker 1: to do what I want when I want when I'm
- 11:19Speaker 1: done football, right, And what that means is some days
- 11:22Speaker 1: I want to wake up and run my house flipping business,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and I want to be I want to pick out
- 11:27Speaker 1: tiles and carpets, pink colors and all that stuff. Right,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and some days I just want to be a founder.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I want to run my foundation. I want to go
- 11:37Speaker 1: out into the community and and help people and help
- 11:40Speaker 1: families and and help kids reach their potential. Because I
- 11:45Speaker 1: want to go to the next break. I want the
- 11:47Speaker 1: Phone's Brandon a couple and from Botomore, Maryland. I lived
- 11:51Speaker 1: in New Jersey where he's completely his best season as
- 11:53Speaker 1: the starting outside linebacker for the New York Jets. We'll
- 11:56Speaker 1: be back with more of Brandon Copeland. He's the man,
- 11:59Speaker 1: He's a eiver, he's a player. Hi, this is ra
- 12:06Speaker 1: Sean McDonald money making Conversations. If you have not heard
- 12:10Speaker 1: about money making conversation, somebody will eventually tap you on
- 12:13Speaker 1: your should and say you better here. Okay, doesn't do that.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Right up, my my guests on the phone right now.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I said it earlier in the in his intro. Is
- 12:24Speaker 1: her husband and son, a brother, a believer in Christ,
- 12:27Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, and the starting outside livebacker for the New
- 12:30Speaker 1: York Jazz. You know this is title. You know you
- 12:32Speaker 1: have to get a title, and you take that title,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and you don't run from it. I've had many athletes
- 12:37Speaker 1: on every tide of athletes, and I always tell them
- 12:39Speaker 1: about the NFL. That is an exclusive club, my friend.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You do you you you use the NFL as much
- 12:47Speaker 1: as you can to build your brand outside of the NFL,
- 12:50Speaker 1: because guess what everybody knows about the NFL. He's on
- 12:53Speaker 1: the phone, he's just talking about building his empire. Please
- 12:56Speaker 1: welcome back to the show, Brandon Copeland. I think you
- 13:01Speaker 1: just you just put the nail right on the head.
- 13:03Speaker 1: You you use the NFL as much as you can
- 13:06Speaker 1: to build your brand. I'm telling yourself. But that's what
- 13:10Speaker 1: used to you. You know what I was talking to
- 13:12Speaker 1: h I talked to people all the time, and uh
- 13:14Speaker 1: and some of them athletes, and some of them are
- 13:17Speaker 1: trying to run away from the NFL. They try to
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm done with that. That's excuse me, excuse me. You
- 13:22Speaker 1: gonna let you know, Rashan McDonald could never have played
- 13:25Speaker 1: in NFL. Okay, when you think about playing it, but
- 13:30Speaker 1: that's here's that's that sport is so removed from the
- 13:33Speaker 1: average guy. Okay, I didn't play flag football, touch football.
- 13:37Speaker 1: That's not professional football. I'm sorry. Just look at that
- 13:40Speaker 1: little league they got on right now, the AL I've
- 13:43Speaker 1: tried to look at that and that go, that's not football,
- 13:49Speaker 1: you know what. That's not college football, and that's not NFL.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I go up to the Canadian Football League, I go,
- 13:59Speaker 1: they're playing football officers only three downs. Let me go
- 14:01Speaker 1: back down to the NFL where they're playing foe downs
- 14:04Speaker 1: and they crushing people to foe to foe too. You
- 14:08Speaker 1: know when I look at the combines, that's a big thing.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And so how do you use bid a starting line
- 14:14Speaker 1: back up for the New York jest as an advantaged
- 14:18Speaker 1: for your brand? Yeah? I think I think first and
- 14:22Speaker 1: fore must you map out? You do your best to
- 14:25Speaker 1: map out what you want to do and where you're
- 14:29Speaker 1: trying to go right And the reason why I say
- 14:31Speaker 1: you do your best career we don't. All of us
- 14:34Speaker 1: don't know exactly where we want to be five years
- 14:36Speaker 1: or now. Some people do. And if you do, more
- 14:38Speaker 1: power to you. Great for you, that's that's amazing. Um,
- 14:41Speaker 1: But these plans are are ever involving. But um, once
- 14:46Speaker 1: you've got a decent idea of where you want to be,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I think that's when you use the brand, use the
- 14:54Speaker 1: NFL logo to shield to reach out to people who
- 14:58Speaker 1: can help mentor you in those spaces. This right, Um, I,
- 15:03Speaker 1: by playing in New York have access to the New
- 15:09Speaker 1: York market right exactly Exactly. I can reach out to
- 15:17Speaker 1: people in almost any industry in the world and say, hey, like,
- 15:23Speaker 1: do you mind taking five minutes of your time to
- 15:26Speaker 1: sit down with me? Right? Um, I can leverage the
- 15:30Speaker 1: platform so to speak, and use it for all this
- 15:35Speaker 1: work at this point to shape hands, meet people and
- 15:37Speaker 1: who knows where that conversation goes and leads to. And
- 15:42Speaker 1: I think a lot of people, you know, they they're
- 15:46Speaker 1: not let's say, unwilling to have a conversation, but just
- 15:49Speaker 1: unwilling to get out of their comfort zone and put
- 15:51Speaker 1: themselves in an awkward position of reaching out to ask
- 15:54Speaker 1: for help. Once you get over that and you start
- 15:58Speaker 1: doing that and making those connects, since then, it's just
- 16:01Speaker 1: it's like a bowling ball of us that has been
- 16:06Speaker 1: been grateful. That's something that I'm grateful for from the
- 16:10Speaker 1: NFL in terms of just having the platform and being
- 16:12Speaker 1: able to have that blessing to know, hey, I need
- 16:15Speaker 1: to use it to maximize it now and maximizing today.
- 16:18Speaker 1: IM gonna ask you this. Uh, this is a this
- 16:20Speaker 1: is a good question because of the fact that you know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: you see rather calm and you seem learner in control.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And uh so I hear read about your teaching this
- 16:29Speaker 1: life one on one at your alma mate, University of Pennsylvania,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and uh what is your goal for that class? Because
- 16:36Speaker 1: you know you're talking finances. You're talking about you're telling
- 16:39Speaker 1: people about your your vision of what they should do
- 16:43Speaker 1: with their money or suggestions because you never want to
- 16:45Speaker 1: say that. You never want to just leaning because people
- 16:47Speaker 1: are whole accountable. Well, you told me, sir, investing that
- 16:52Speaker 1: and that and that pig over there, and that pig
- 16:54Speaker 1: didn't grow like you said. So everything is about with
- 16:58Speaker 1: a with a disclaimer, disclaimer how like I would tell
- 17:01Speaker 1: people like I would tell people. You know, I I
- 17:04Speaker 1: live check to check from a standpoint, that is, what
- 17:06Speaker 1: do you mean? I said, Well, I only only spend
- 17:08Speaker 1: what I only spend what I want to pay for
- 17:11Speaker 1: that month. I don't I don't get out of that.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I buy my cars, I buy my homes, I buy
- 17:16Speaker 1: my clothes and if I if I don't exceed what
- 17:19Speaker 1: I'm planning on spending that month because I don't like
- 17:21Speaker 1: taking a curative car to the next month. I tell
- 17:23Speaker 1: people that all the time, and it's really important that,
- 17:26Speaker 1: uh that people you understand that's what is your life
- 17:29Speaker 1: one on one? What is your life want on one plane? Yeah. So, um,
- 17:36Speaker 1: in terms of in terms of the goals for the
- 17:39Speaker 1: class or apologize for the goals for the class, I
- 17:43Speaker 1: just got to talking about myself, but the class, because
- 17:45Speaker 1: that's something because we just don't asking is that it's
- 17:50Speaker 1: just going to become a webinar or just gonna always
- 17:52Speaker 1: stay in the classroom format at University of Pennsylvania. So
- 17:56Speaker 1: so the goal for me personally, I thought that creating
- 18:01Speaker 1: the class one of my alma mater for a kid
- 18:04Speaker 1: from Baltimore. Uh, when I went to penn which is
- 18:09Speaker 1: an ovurly school. You know, I was laughing and chuckling
- 18:12Speaker 1: myself when I got into the school and and and
- 18:16Speaker 1: done graduated all that stuff. In the now, I think
- 18:19Speaker 1: it's it's awesome. I chuckle. You know, I have actually
- 18:22Speaker 1: have class later on today. I chuckled on my way
- 18:26Speaker 1: to class every time, and I'm like, this is pretty
- 18:28Speaker 1: clearly and ironic that that I'm teaching this class, right,
- 18:31Speaker 1: But my goal for the class is to use it
- 18:37Speaker 1: as a launching point and really as an experiment two
- 18:42Speaker 1: fine tune and honing on information so that I can
- 18:46Speaker 1: make it accessible to everyone. What that end game is,
- 18:50Speaker 1: whether it's a webinar like you said, or an app
- 18:53Speaker 1: or some type of online platform or whatever. Um, I'm
- 18:57Speaker 1: not a pcent sure of yet. We played with some
- 18:59Speaker 1: of my ideas, but my goal is to make this
- 19:02Speaker 1: information accessible to everyone for free. And I don't think
- 19:05Speaker 1: it should have to Uh, it shouldn't be contained to
- 19:10Speaker 1: a college student, you know, not everyone is going to
- 19:13Speaker 1: go to college, right. Um. I just think that it's
- 19:16Speaker 1: crazy that you go to twelve years of school, sixteen
- 19:21Speaker 1: years of school sometimes grad school, and you come out
- 19:25Speaker 1: and the first time you ever learning about buying your
- 19:27Speaker 1: first houses when you're trying to purchase your first home, right, Like,
- 19:32Speaker 1: that's crazy to me. And that's what I'm trying to
- 19:36Speaker 1: combat with this course. It's just teaching people about financial decisions,
- 19:44Speaker 1: life decisions that you're going to have to make. Like
- 19:47Speaker 1: a lot of last classes on credit, I don't care
- 19:50Speaker 1: who you are, your credit is going to be important
- 19:53Speaker 1: to you at some point in time of your life,
- 19:55Speaker 1: and so making that information accessible to everybody, UM, not
- 20:00Speaker 1: just one student body or one certain group of people. UM,
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's my ultimate goal. Now that's interesting because you know
- 20:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna go back to your because you're an IVY
- 20:10Speaker 1: League graduate. Correct, Yes, okay, cool, So let's put that
- 20:14Speaker 1: in that. That's putting that opening credit. Now. You know
- 20:16Speaker 1: you said I'm a husband, a son, a brother, an
- 20:19Speaker 1: IVY League graduate, a believer in Christ. You know, because entrepreneur,
- 20:24Speaker 1: that can say a lot of things. But if you're
- 20:26Speaker 1: a graduate of an IVY League school, I know exactly
- 20:29Speaker 1: who you are. Kind about to take that away from you, Brandon,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know, this is about branding because see, there are
- 20:35Speaker 1: two things that stand out when you go out in
- 20:37Speaker 1: the general market. Because that because that IVY League graduate
- 20:41Speaker 1: that screams intelligence. Whoa that screams smart and so so
- 20:48Speaker 1: that's part. And then you're starting linebacker for that's for
- 20:51Speaker 1: the New York Jets and Exclusive Club. So you got
- 20:54Speaker 1: two things going for you. You're physically a member of
- 20:57Speaker 1: the Exclusive Club and you're super intelligent because you're an
- 20:59Speaker 1: IVY League graduate. Hey, I graduated from University Houston. I'm
- 21:03Speaker 1: proud of my university. But I can't seem an Ivy
- 21:06Speaker 1: League graduate. And so I only say that because I
- 21:11Speaker 1: want you to understand, man, you got something going here
- 21:15Speaker 1: and and uh and I want you to really take time.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And I want to say you're not taking time because
- 21:19Speaker 1: you got your you got your class life one on
- 21:21Speaker 1: one going at the University of Pennsylvania. But my man,
- 21:24Speaker 1: you can be way bigger than this. You in New
- 21:26Speaker 1: York City. You're in New York City. You should be
- 21:30Speaker 1: going down to Facebook doing some webinars, doing some Facebook lives.
- 21:34Speaker 1: You should be doing some Paris Cope because, my man,
- 21:37Speaker 1: you had I've had a lot of people. Eddie George
- 21:39Speaker 1: is powerful. I've had him on my show. He teaches
- 21:41Speaker 1: classes at the Ohio State similar tone, but you are
- 21:46Speaker 1: still playing. So he's retired. So you got it and
- 21:49Speaker 1: you figured that out while you were playing that right there,
- 21:52Speaker 1: my friend, you need to build on You need to
- 21:54Speaker 1: understand how special you really are and you owned something
- 21:57Speaker 1: very unique and you're gonna keep winning with that. Brandon.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I I'm just bragging on you right now, brother, because
- 22:02Speaker 1: I know how the brand people, I know how to
- 22:04Speaker 1: put people in the right direction. I will mentor you
- 22:07Speaker 1: as a as a as a person, if you need me,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you call me. Because in fact that you are something,
- 22:13Speaker 1: you own to something very special at a young age.
- 22:16Speaker 1: You are the thirty You're millennial. Man, You're millennial doing this.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You're not supposed be doing this. Okay, you're a millennial.
- 22:24Speaker 1: They're talking about you. You don't have no focus. You
- 22:27Speaker 1: got to plan the focus. I re lead, graduate and
