- 0:00This shit ain't nothing to me, man. This is Boxing
- 0:03Before Dark. Boxing. Boxing. Boxing. Back. Back.
- 0:06Back. Back. Back. Before. Before. Before. Before.
- 0:11Boxing. Boxing. Boxing. Boxing Before Dark. This
- 0:15is Boxing Before Dark. All right. Okay. Let's
- 0:25fucking. I am dialed in. Boxing before dark,
- 0:30we fucking got the fights. Holy shit, Shinara,
- 0:35how you doing out there in Japan? Had a long
- 0:39night. I'm a little rough this morning, not gonna
- 0:42lie. Fighting for your life? Nah, nah, it's not
- 0:46that bad. Maybe threw up before the podcast,
- 0:50but it's all good. Maybe. Man. So, the Ali Revival
- 0:59Act has cleared committee for people who forgot
- 1:06their civics lessons. Bills or amendments to
- 1:10bills like this start off in committee, then
- 1:15they get voted out of committee, and then they
- 1:18go to the floor for a vote. This cleared committee.
- 1:22It passed 30 votes to 4. And, yeah, so now it
- 1:29goes to the Speaker of the House to determine
- 1:31if it's going to be heard for a vote in the House.
- 1:36If it passes there, then it goes to the Senate
- 1:38committee, the equivalent committee in the Senate,
- 1:43and same process there. Right. So, some changes
- 1:50were made to... the Muhammad Ali American Boxing
- 1:54Revival Act. The fighter pay has been increased.
- 2:00The minimum pay per round is now $200 a round.
- 2:06Which still seems crazy low to me. Up from $150.
- 2:12Small victories, I guess. The minimum insurance
- 2:16coverage... was doubled from 25 ,000 to 50 ,000.
- 2:22This seems really good, but I've heard a lot
- 2:27of the boxing podcasts with actual fighters discussing
- 2:33how this will kill club shows entirely. I've
- 2:37been hearing the same thing. Yeah, that it's
- 2:41going to reduce any of the kind of grassroots,
- 2:44lower -level competition. Um, I mean, minimum
- 2:51pays and minimum insurance coverage is a good
- 2:54thing. I'm not saying it's not, but this definitely
- 2:57feels like a way to reduce the competition for
- 3:01prospects. Yeah. So if you don't get signed by
- 3:06a major organization, you pretty much don't get
- 3:08to compete. Exactly. Yeah. And like, so they
- 3:13get to pick who they want. and everyone else
- 3:17is just fucked, basically. So, I don't know.
- 3:21These are, on paper, really good things, but
- 3:25maybe they're not as good as they appear when
- 3:29you first think about them. But that being said,
- 3:34fighters should have insurance. Fighters should
- 3:37get paid. Like, 100%. I'm not... I don't know.
- 3:41I'm conflicted about these two. The sunset clause
- 3:46for all fighter contracts set to six years. Yeah.
- 3:54Of course, fighters are able to re -sign, but
- 3:57there is a designated grace period where they
- 4:01can check with other promoters, see what they're
- 4:06offering. That one I see no downside to. I think
- 4:10that one's just across the board not bad. And
- 4:14I also heard something about they have to offer
- 4:18a fight every six months. Yes. So people can't
- 4:23get just completely sidelined if your promoter
- 4:26doesn't like you, which is also a good thing,
- 4:29I think. If they don't get a fight every six
- 4:33months, they get 10 times the minimum per round.
- 4:39So like 2000 a month until they get there. Next
- 4:43fight. Nice. That one, I think, is just across
- 4:46the board positive. And I kind of hope it gets
- 4:50people to fight more often. Because a lot of
- 4:53dudes fight once a year right now. And barring
- 4:58injury or anything crazy, I think most fighters
- 5:02could handle two fights a year. I think that's
- 5:04very reasonable. Yeah, twice a year kind of became
- 5:10the gold standard. like throughout the aughts
- 5:16and the early 2000 the teens yeah and fighting
- 5:22more like of course there's the jokes that like
- 5:25Armstrong fought fucking like five times a year
- 5:30yeah but lots of those fights were kind of basically
- 5:34sparring matches in front of people yeah But
- 5:39two good fights a year is not a bad schedule.
- 5:43Yeah. The elimination of secondary titles. Only
- 5:49one belt per division. I kind of like that. I
- 5:55mean, the silvers, the interims, the whatever.
- 5:58It's confusing as fuck. like i've been so confused
- 6:03sometimes when we're talking on this podcast
- 6:05i'm like but he's the champion and then nah he's
- 6:09the silver champ but then there's the super champ
- 6:11or whatever the fuck it is yeah they're confusing
- 6:14as hell yeah i i agree with this one um as well
- 6:18like they're the only it was an interesting question
- 6:22that somebody else had posed was how does this
- 6:26affect like regional titles Because even if it's
- 6:31just like Continental Americas, you're still
- 6:35designated the champion of Continental Americas.
- 6:40True. I hadn't really considered that until you
- 6:43said that just now. But the regional belts are
- 6:46important. Exactly. They're stepping stones.
- 6:48The Oriental Pacific ones are really an important
- 6:53step here in Japan. and uh i think the the british
- 6:58title or whatever it is british that's also yeah
- 7:01that's also a really like important milestone
- 7:04for fighters to hit i hadn't thought about that
- 7:08i hope they don't get rid of the regional belts
- 7:10i hope this only is like in regards to world
- 7:14titles right like ebu is that's important for
- 7:19the european scene opbf like you mentioned Yeah,
- 7:25I don't want to see those go away. I'm curious
- 7:29how this is going to play out. Yeah, yeah. I
- 7:34think they need to keep those stepping stone
- 7:37belts. And I don't think that confuses anyone
- 7:40because the casuals have never heard of them.
- 7:43And it's very clear it's not the same as a world
- 7:47title. Right. Anybody who has one doesn't parade
- 7:52it. The only person I've ever seen parade a regional
- 7:55title is Montana Love. Yeah. Otherwise, nobody.
- 8:02Nobody holds that up like they're the king of
- 8:05the world. I don't know how the sanctioning...
- 8:10Oh, Jesus Christ. Sanctioning fees. affect those
- 8:14either like nobody is really defending those
- 8:18for very long usually i mean some guys do and
- 8:23that's that's fine that's good but i mean like
- 8:25the really big guys it's a stepping stone yeah
- 8:32sanctioning fees is uh how is that gonna how
- 8:34is this limitation how is that going to like
- 8:38it's none of the other than ibf The traditional
- 8:43sanctioning bodies are not housed in the U .S.
- 8:48They're based out of Mexico, Puerto Rico, so
- 8:52I guess that one kind of counts. That's WBO.
- 8:55And then WBA is in Panama. For what it's worth,
- 9:00IBF and WBO are actually really good about not
- 9:04putting out interim champs or having more than
- 9:08one title per division. But, like, WBC is...
- 9:13They go crazy with that shit. Yeah, and it legitimately
- 9:17confuses me sometimes. Like, you're watching
- 9:21the fight and suddenly there's a belt. And I'm
- 9:23like, this wasn't a world title fight. Like,
- 9:26what is happening? Because they do the silvers
- 9:31and the supers and the interims and the... Franchise
- 9:34and diamond. Yeah. It gets confusing. Yeah. I...
- 9:40i'm all for there being one world title for each
- 9:44sanctioning body like and i i don't see a downside
- 9:51to that but if they're not getting their money
- 9:54from all these subs sub belts are they gonna
- 9:58start taking higher percentages to pay their
- 10:02sanctioning whatever i actually don't know what
- 10:05the the sanctioning money goes for a whole bunch
- 10:09I assume it's for the drug testing and lining
- 10:14a lot of pockets, mostly. That's what I expect
- 10:18it's used for as well, lining pockets. I think
- 10:23in order to maintain a ranking, you have to pay
- 10:27a sanctioning fee for your fights. I don't know,
- 10:30so maybe there'll be that. Right, yeah. That's
- 10:35also kind of corrupt as hell, but... It is what
- 10:39it is. Yeah, you should just be ranked for being
- 10:43good. Yeah, yeah. Like, I do know that the sanctioning
- 10:47bodies have expenses. They need some income,
- 10:52but I think they milk fighters for a lot more
- 10:55than they actually need. Yeah, I agree. Interesting
- 11:01that you had mentioned the sanctioning bodies
- 11:04and drug testing. One of the other... amendments
- 11:07to the Revival Act is randomized drug testing
- 11:12for both fighters competing in a title fight
- 11:15and a randomized half of all fights on the card.
- 11:20So you don't know which of the two fighters is
- 11:22going to be picked. But every fight has at least
- 11:27one fighter being tested. I see no downside to
- 11:32this either. Something Bally brought up was cost.
- 11:39It is expensive. Yeah. Well, and how much testing
- 11:44are they doing is the other question. Whatever
- 11:47the World Anti -Doping Agency standard is. Yeah,
- 11:53that's expensive. Yes, it is. Yeah. If they randomized
- 11:57and just also randomized what drugs they were
- 12:00testing for, they could cut the cost down quite
- 12:04a bit, I think. But. Yeah. So is this. This is
- 12:12every card. Has half the fighters. Yes. Another
- 12:17way to get rid of the grassroots stuff. Yes exactly.
- 12:20Like those club shows. They don't have the money
- 12:24for this. It might be possible. If it could be
- 12:34worked out through the State Athletic Commission?
- 12:39Yeah, I kind of feel that they're not going to
- 12:43try and make it so that the club shows can survive.
- 12:46Yeah, I think you're right. That's probably the
- 12:50point. This is meant to reduce competition. Yes,
- 12:55it solidifies the major players as they are.
- 13:00Yeah. and obviously Zufa has a lot of money behind
- 13:05them so yeah again like on the surface first
- 13:09pass super good idea but yeah it's it's really
- 13:14gonna start hurting people I think and like pro
- 13:19box is not that grassroots but it's pretty grassroots
- 13:22and I don't know if pro box can even afford this
- 13:25shit Pro box is probably going to leave YouTube
- 13:29and you're going to have to pay a monthly fee
- 13:30to watch pro box so they can pay for drug testing
- 13:34and shit. And that makes me sad. It is. It would
- 13:38make me sad as well. I also would not feel too,
- 13:42I wouldn't, I would be okay with supporting pro
- 13:45box financially. I would too, but like me and
- 13:50you have enough money that that's feasible. Right?
- 13:53Yeah, you're right. Like, neither one of us is
- 13:56choosing pro box or groceries like yeah that's
- 14:03true damn i mean pro box on youtube for free
- 14:09for everyone is fucking great for boxing in my
- 14:13opinion and if they have to get rid of that it's
- 14:17it's gonna make me sad because anyone that i
- 14:21talk to on the internet or in real life I push
- 14:25pro box so hard and I don't feel bad about it
- 14:27at all because it's free. It's free on YouTube.
- 14:30Yeah. Yeah. Um, but yeah, that's, those are the
- 14:36changes to the fucking revival act. Um, and again,
- 14:41all surface sounds great, but when you stop and
- 14:45think about it, it's kind of like, this is, this
- 14:48is going to hurt some stuff. And. If you have
- 14:54those minimums for the fighters and stuff, that's
- 14:58great. I'm not saying it's not, but some fighters
- 15:03who can't get in with the big guys are just not
- 15:06going to get in at all now. Yeah, because this
- 15:15isn't going to hurt PBC or Zufa, like I said.
- 15:19No, like... top ranks gonna be well pop ranks
- 15:23kind of fucked anyways but matchroom and queensbury
- 15:27that it's not for those guys like yeah it's eye
- 15:33of the tiger like i bet you those guys are kind
- 15:37of well it's all drug money anyways but those
- 15:39guys are borderline scraping by That's Canada,
- 15:43so I guess this doesn't affect them, though.
- 15:45My regional, I can think of two regional promotions
- 15:48off the top of my head that would struggle for
- 15:52this. I expect Ironboy probably not going to
- 15:55be in operation much longer with these kinds
- 15:59of minimums set up. Del Sol, definitely less.
- 16:03They'll be out of business faster than Ironboy
- 16:06would be. Yeah. I don't know. I'm a little torn
- 16:11about all of it. But I really don't like the,
- 16:18whatever they call them, unified boxing commissions.
- 16:20That whole system just seems ripe for fucking
- 16:27people over. Yeah, it's exactly what UFC is.
- 16:36And there's more than one case. Plenty of examples
- 16:40of fighters speaking out about shitty pay, shitty
- 16:44treatment. And this is to make UBOs exist like
- 16:51UFC. That's really what the point is. Yeah, and
- 16:56I think that's terrible. And that's the whole
- 16:59reason that the Ali Act was passed in the first
- 17:03place, was to stop that. Yeah. But this, like
- 17:10I had outlined, it still has quite a bit of ways
- 17:12to go. Still plenty of hurdles that it has to
- 17:15clear. It is getting some pushback as well. Yes.
- 17:20Like I mentioned the first time we talked about
- 17:23it, Ilhan Omar and the newest rep out of Arizona,
- 17:29her name is Adelita Grijalva. Those two women
- 17:33fucking spoke up. And I really appreciate it.
- 17:36Yeah. And they make some really good points.
- 17:40Like, they're really well informed about why
- 17:44some of these things are a bad idea. Yeah. Bad
- 17:50ideas. Gervonta Davis is on the run. This whole
- 17:57saga is fucking ridiculous. At least the WBA
- 18:03did the right thing. Stripped him of his title.
- 18:06But they didn't. They put them in recess. Or
- 18:08did they finally strip them? Okay, good. Yeah,
- 18:12legit. And nobody knows where Tank is. This is
- 18:20legitimately fucking funny. This is a wild fucking
- 18:25ride. The villain of the year is looking better
- 18:30and better. He might be the villain of 2026 as
- 18:34well. yeah he might be fucking ridiculous like
- 18:38man just turn yourself in or disappear completely
- 18:43like those are your two options i'm sure oh well
- 18:48i was gonna say his uh google search is probably
- 18:53like non -extradition countries but he's going
- 18:57to argentina yeah but i don't think he has the
- 19:01wherewithal to look that up He's not very book
- 19:05smart. Better be learning Spanish. Deontay Wilder
- 19:15is looking to fight Derek Chisora. It's looking
- 19:20like it's going to happen in April. Okay, how
- 19:24do you feel about this? Because I, honest to
- 19:26God, think Chisora beats him. I would... I'm
- 19:30inclined to agree. I do think Chizora probably...
- 19:35The way somebody put it a long time ago that
- 19:38made me just nearly piss myself laughing was
- 19:41Derek Chizora has more experience being washed.
- 19:46It's true, though. It is true. He knows how to
- 19:52get by being the B -side. Chizora understands
- 19:57exactly what he can do, and he doesn't try to
- 20:01be what he was. Chizora uses his abilities the
- 20:05best way they can be used at this point in time.
- 20:09And I don't think Wilder does. Yeah, I don't
- 20:13think he does either. I'm still going to be cheering
- 20:16for my man Deontay, but I don't like your odds.
- 20:20I just think this is a fuck -up by Wilder. He
- 20:25should have just took the Usyk Payday and gotten
- 20:27his ass kicked. Because he's going to get his
- 20:29ass kicked by Chizora. Which is going to take
- 20:31a lot longer and hurt a lot more. And he's going
- 20:37to fumble the bag. He's not getting that Usyk
- 20:39Payday after Chizora chins him. And the other
- 20:44rumor is... Well, the Wilder Chizora, that's
- 20:49not a rumor. That is moving ahead. It looks like
- 20:53the Sauerland Brothers. Wasserman boxing. Looks
- 20:56like they're going to be promoting it. Usyk might
- 21:00be fighting Andy Ruiz as well. Imagine. It's
- 21:07not going to happen, but imagine Ruiz pulls off
- 21:10the fucking crazy upset a second time. Imagine
- 21:14that Andy Ruiz locks in and somehow wins it.
- 21:18Then it becomes Ruiz versus Chisora. As the winners
- 21:24of the brackets. That's the worst timeline ever.
- 21:29Yeah. Agreed. Speaking of worst timelines, Jai
- 21:35Opataya signs with Zufa. Yeah. I'm disappointed
- 21:42in Opataya. I watched the Probox podcasting boxing
- 21:49scene or whatever it is. Pauly Molinaggi was
- 21:54in Australia for that last card. The fucking
- 21:57atrocity that it was. And he said he was talking
- 22:01to people there and Opataya's getting fucked
- 22:05always. He fights for peanuts, apparently. Oh,
- 22:09shit. Like, they don't pay him shit. Tasman fighters.
- 22:14Zufa probably was like... a pay jump and a half,
- 22:21and they're still getting them at a discount.
- 22:24Good gracious. According to Pauly Malinagy, like,
- 22:27this is all secondhand bullshit, but the reason
- 22:31they stole, not stole, but the reason that they
- 22:36targeted Obataya, according to him, is that he
- 22:39fights for way less money than he should. And
- 22:43also, like, cruiserweights kind of shit. Yeah,
- 22:47who cares? Yeah. So, like, I guess they could
- 22:51run Cruiserweight if they wanted to. But that
- 22:56kind of goes against their branding, because
- 22:58Zufa's, like, the original eight weight class
- 23:01is only yada yada yada, but then they signed
- 23:04the Cruiserweight champ, and when was Cruiserweight
- 23:07created? Like, the 80s? 90s? It's not very long
- 23:11ago. Yeah, it's like 40, 45 years ago? Something
- 23:13like that? Yeah. In the grand scheme of boxing,
- 23:18that's fucking nothing. Right. And further to
- 23:23this, it has been, it was made very apparent,
- 23:27or very clear, that Obatai is going to be allowed
- 23:30to defend his IBF title. He's going to be allowed
- 23:34to unify titles with other, with the two other
- 23:37fucking champs. Yeah, so Zupa's already capitulating
- 23:43on a bunch of their stuff. Which is not a surprise,
- 23:50but I think they've realized that they have to
- 23:54play ball. Boxing isn't like UFC was. At least
- 23:58to start, they have to play ball. Because if
- 24:02they could get Obataya to undisputed status,
- 24:07and it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility,
- 24:10then once he has that, then they hand him the
- 24:15Zufa belt. I'd say, look, the undisputed champ
- 24:18has the Zufa belt. Yeah, the Zufa belt guy is...
- 24:23I really hope people don't buy into this Zufa
- 24:29belt bullshit. A fifth fucking belt? No, no thank
- 24:32you. Yeah. Oh, shit, speaking of no thank you,
- 24:39Virgil Ortiz says no thank you to Golden Boy.
- 24:44He is suing for breach of contract and is looking
- 24:46to end his time as a Golden Boy fighter. That's
- 24:52a big loss for Golden Boy promotions. Yeah. If
- 24:55they lose him. Yeah. Part of the suing legalese
- 25:03stuff is Clapback Thursdays. So they're saying
- 25:10that... uh oscar de la joya and his clapback
- 25:15thursdays is a breach of contract because he's
- 25:19not trying to negotiate with the other promoters
- 25:23in good faith or something yeah that makes sense
- 25:25yeah but that's i think it's kind of silly like
- 25:30it's one of those things they throw a bunch of
- 25:32shit at the wall and see what sticks right but
- 25:34um Honestly, Eddie Hearn doesn't give a shit
- 25:39what Oscar De La Hoya says on Clapback Thursdays.
- 25:43Yeah, I'm sure he's not even aware. I'm sure
- 25:46he knows that they happen, but doesn't go look
- 25:49at them or anything. Yeah, and if he gets mentioned,
- 25:51he probably checks it out. There's also, because
- 25:58of Rick Merigian, I think is his name, Ortiz's
- 26:04manager. And Oscar are beefing because the, I
- 26:10don't know, it's for the, because of the Ennis
- 26:12fight, or trying to make the Ennis fight, and
- 26:15Merigian was trying to negotiate without Oscar
- 26:22in the room, pretty much. Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't
- 26:30understand why they're not just making that fight.
- 26:33It seems like both boxers want it. It doesn't
- 26:37seem like it would be a hard thing to make happen.
- 26:40Right. The network is there with the zone. Both
- 26:47fighters want it. I don't see what the problem
- 26:49is. Yeah. And the whole 60 -40 or whatever I
- 26:54also think is kind of stupid. Just 50 -50 it.
- 26:57They're equally big names. At this point, yeah,
- 27:01I would say they are. It was a 60 -40 Virgil
- 27:07Ennis with a 5 % extra for the winner. So 105
- 27:14% Oscars dealing in big numbers here. Oh, shit.
- 27:22Oscar Valdez is a promotional free agent. I know
- 27:27the world has been waiting with bated breath
- 27:29to hear what he's up to next. Given the way that
- 27:33Top Rank is going, yeah, this is a good time
- 27:36to get off the fucking ship. Yeah. Yeah, it does
- 27:43kind of seem like Top Rank is sinking. I was
- 27:46trying to believe, because I like Top Rank. I
- 27:51think they do a good job usually, but... All
- 27:56good things come to an end, I suppose. So Oscar
- 27:59Valdez finding somewhere else to be is probably
- 28:02a good move. Do you think top rank dies with
- 28:07Bob? I kind of do. I feel like Bob really is
- 28:13top rank. Yeah, I think so too. That might be
- 28:18part of the problem is nobody wants to sign a
- 28:20long -term broadcast deal because Bob's what,
- 28:23like 90? something 94 i think yeah and like people
- 28:28don't live forever so nobody wants to sign a
- 28:31long -term deal with top rank because bob's dying
- 28:34soon doesn't matter what he wants to do he's
- 28:38dying soon like people don't live more than 100
- 28:41years hardly ever well good luck to you oscar
- 28:48hope you find what you're looking for I like
- 28:52Oscar Valdez. I'm excited to see him. He seems
- 28:56like a really good dude. He always does part
- 28:59of his build -ups to fights. He always does a
- 29:03lot of charity work. So that's really respectable.
- 29:09This one, I haven't seen much more information,
- 29:13but Fernando Vargas Jr. and Amado Vargas were
- 29:17fighting in a hotel lobby. It was pretty funny.
- 29:21I thought it was pretty funny. What happened?
- 29:24Do you know? I didn't hear what it was about
- 29:28or anything, but I saw the video clips. I assume
- 29:35it's just brother stuff. Yeah, probably. It's
- 29:38only a headline because they're kind of famous.
- 29:42Like, brothers fight. Not a surprise. But it
- 29:48was... in a hotel lobby in front of lots of people
- 29:53man when you wouldn't and they're both professional
- 29:59fighters so like do they square up properly and
- 30:03kind of like there was a lot of movement and
- 30:09nobody landed anything crazy yeah well that i
- 30:14saw but then there was just a scrap between brothers
- 30:18yeah it's it's only a headline because they're
- 30:22professional fighters like it it didn't seem
- 30:25crazy but everybody pulled out their phones and
- 30:29there's like six different angles of it um hold
- 30:43on a sec i pulled up an article let me see really
- 30:47quickly if they have a a reason yeah emiliano
- 30:54says do i condone my brother's fighting not at
- 30:58all the ones pointing fingers forget they have
- 31:01family they couldn't even be in the same room
- 31:04together that's a direct quote yeah i i don't
- 31:09think it was anything super scandalous I think
- 31:15it was just brothers got pissed off with each
- 31:16other and squared off in a hotel lobby. Yeah,
- 31:20must have been serious if they're going to brawl
- 31:24in public. Or maybe not. I mean, it's like, I
- 31:27got family that I throw hands with over nothing
- 31:30because they pissed me off. It's just like, I've
- 31:36never heard of them doing something like this
- 31:38or even heard rumors of them having problems
- 31:42with each other. I don't think this is like they're
- 31:46never going to talk again. I think this was brothers
- 31:48had a couple extra drinks and gotten an argument
- 31:51over something. Yeah, that's my thinking as well.
- 31:55Just brothers. Brothers fight. Speaking of fights,
- 32:02Callum Smith, David Morrell is for the IBO Interim
- 32:09175 title. And it's going to purse bid. Nice.
- 32:18I like Callum Smith. I'm excited to see him again.
- 32:22He doesn't fight very often anymore. He's at
- 32:25the tail end of it. Yeah. I like the fight for
- 32:30Morrell too. This is stepping back up into title
- 32:35contention. That's good. I have to look at David
- 32:38Morrell. I'm not sure which one he is. Ah, yeah,
- 32:43yeah. I know this guy. It should be a fun fight,
- 32:46actually. I don't know. Callum Smith is definitely
- 32:49not what he used to be, but he can still put
- 32:52up a good fight. Speaking of putting up good
- 32:58fights, Oslis Iglesias has an opponent for the
- 33:03IBF 168 -pound title. Pavel Silyagin. Who? Exactly.
- 33:13He's like number seven, I think, in the rankings.
- 33:18Somewhere in that neighborhood. Is he French?
- 33:22No, he's Russian. Ah. Yeah, I don't know this
- 33:28man. I have never seen this man in my life. Yeah,
- 33:32I haven't either. I expect mostly to run over
- 33:37him. That's probably what's going to happen.
- 33:40We'll have to do some tape study just to see
- 33:45how badly is he going to get beaten. Yeah. It's
- 33:50not a question of if. Well, unless, I don't know,
- 33:54the stars align and Pavel gets it done. Well,
- 33:59that's why I asked if he was French. There's
- 34:01been a lot of French offsets lately. That's true.
- 34:07Let's see. The Wood -Warrington rematch card
- 34:11on February 21st is starting to fill out David
- 34:15Allen, Ishmael Davis, and Molly McCann. Nice.
- 34:20Are going to be on it. So that's fun. That is
- 34:23fun. And Juan Francisco Estrada continues his
- 34:29campaign at Bantamweight. He will be fighting.
- 34:31Well, he might be fighting. All signs are looking
- 34:35good. Tenshin Asakawa in April. I hope Estrada
- 34:41chins him. I want that more than fucking anything.
- 34:46And he could. Estrada's washed, but he's not
- 34:50that washed. Like, Estrada still has... Power's
- 34:52the last thing to go, right? Exactly. I would
- 34:56love it so much if he just fucking shut Tenshin
- 35:00off. Just face down on the canvas. That would
- 35:04be my fucking Christmas in April. That's it for
- 35:10the news, though. Fucking let me do some housekeeping
- 35:13stuff. Social media, LVX Media Net. That's the

- 37:39slash mwb. All right. Not a lot to recap, but
- 37:47what we do have is kind of interesting. It's
- 37:51kind of garbage. Let me see. No limit. No limit
- 37:56boxing in the Brisbane Entertainment Center in
- 38:02Australia. Looking up only two fights I really
- 38:07care about. Liam Wilson continues his campaign
- 38:10and he gets a knockout in four over Rodex Piala.
- 38:15Who names their kid Rodex? Yeah, I had the same
- 38:18reaction when I saw it. He's from the Philippines.
- 38:25He got bopped. She was clearly behind. They have
- 38:28the strangest names. And Nikita Zoo, no contest
- 38:35with Michael Zaraffa. This was fucking ridiculous.
- 38:40Yeah, I completely forgot to mention it, but
- 38:43we'll have Jacob weighing in on this one in a
- 38:47moment. Yeah, Jacob has some thoughts about Australian
- 38:55boxing in general. Yeah, thoughts on Liam Wilson,
- 38:58Nikita Zu, Jai Obataya, No Limit in general.
- 39:05Yeah. Overall, he says everything way better
- 39:10than I could. Yeah. I'll wait until we cut to
- 39:16that. Fucking golden boy in Palm Desert, California.
- 39:25This was a pretty middling card. Let's see. Ruslan
- 39:32Abdullaev got a stoppage in five. It looked good
- 39:36while doing it. Alexis Rocha dropped out of the
- 39:42card and Jordan Panthen stepped up to the main
- 39:47event. fought Raul Curiel, Jordan lost a unanimous
- 39:52decision. Overall, he made good of his opportunity
- 39:56on the bigger stage. For last -minute replacement,
- 40:04I thought he did well. Yeah. He was actually
- 40:09pretty competitive in the first four or five
- 40:11rounds. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't recommend this
- 40:16fight. to go find or anything. But I'd never
- 40:21heard of Jordan Panthen and I thought he took
- 40:25full advantage of the opportunity he was given.
- 40:28Yeah. He wears Apollo Creed style shorts. I didn't
- 40:38notice. That's fun. He wears the same ones every
- 40:40time. But that's it for the recaps. There will
- 40:46be more coming, of course. But, upcoming shit.
- 40:51It is a busy, busy weekend. Let's get into it.
- 40:58Starting things off really nicely. Friday, January
- 41:0230th. ProBox TV at the Live Casino and Hotel
- 41:07in Hanover, Maryland. I know... a few of these
- 41:15guys by name. The co -main is going to be a banger.
- 41:20100%. Suleiman Sagawa is fighting Rene Palacios
- 41:25in a featherweight fight. I don't know who Rene
- 41:29Palacios is, but he better be prepared for a
- 41:32large amount of punches. Suleiman Sagawa is a
- 41:40bit of a machine. He's always fun. Yeah. Other
- 41:46than Sagawa, I don't really recognize anyone
- 41:50else that much, but it doesn't really matter
- 41:53because with Probox, you're getting really evenly
- 41:57matched fights. Yeah. Probox is always entertaining.
- 42:03Josh's refrain, Probox good. All right. Yeah.
- 42:10Saturday. January 31st. These are not in order
- 42:14of time. They are in order of importance. So,
- 42:20first off, primetime boxing on DAZN in Kolding,
- 42:27Denmark. Who the fuck are these people? Yeah.
- 42:32Dina Thorslund is a name. Yeah, Dina Thorslund
- 42:36is fighting for the interim WBC featherweight
- 42:39title. against Lila Furtado. Don't really know
- 42:43who that is, but Dina, not bad. Not a bad watch.
- 42:48In the main event, Jacob Bank will be fighting
- 42:51William Skull. And that's why we're even paying
- 42:57attention to this card. I mean, I'm more excited
- 43:01about Dina Thorsland than William Skull. Yeah,
- 43:06that's probably a good one. Good estimation there.
- 43:11Moving on. Boxer. This will be on BBC2. How you
- 43:15watch it outside of the UK. Yes. Come to Discord.
- 43:23We'll probably hook you up. At the Copper Box
- 43:26Arena. Adam Azeem is fighting Gustavo Lemos.
- 43:34That is a 140 pound fight. Also, Francesca Hennessy.
- 43:41I have not seen Hennessy as a last name. That's
- 43:43pretty fun. Oh, there used to be this promotion
- 43:47in the UK. The guy who ran it or owned it or
- 43:52whatever, his name was Mick Hennessy. Nice. Moving
- 43:58on. Matchroom on DAZN at the Newcastle Arena.
- 44:04We have... Just, like, of who really matters,
- 44:11Josh Padley versus, holy shit, there are way
- 44:15too many vowels in a row here. Jawad? Jawad,
- 44:21I think it is. Belmedy? No idea. Four vowels
- 44:26is too many vowels. Yes, it is. In the main,
- 44:32Bakram Murtazaliev is defending his IBF. 154
- 44:37title against Josh Kelly. That one might actually
- 44:43be like low -key fun, I think. Yes, Josh Kelly
- 44:47does come to Rumble. And Mortazaliev doesn't
- 44:53not come to Rumble. Yeah, it should be a good
- 45:00fight. Of the three, those three cards that we
- 45:04just... mentioned, those are going to be happening
- 45:06around midday on the west coast of the US. So,
- 45:11yeah. Of the three, I would say the Matchroom
- 45:15card is probably the one worth watching. It's
- 45:19also the easiest to find. Yes. Probably. William
- 45:25Skoll will be on DAZN. So that's fun. Is it?
- 45:37Moving to top rank in Puerto Rico. This one is
- 45:45going to be on the like Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo,
- 45:50all those funky ass names. The free services.
- 45:54Top rank is going to be on one of those. Pick
- 45:57your favorite. Not a bad card. Let's see. Juanma
- 46:05Juanita Lopez is going to be on here fighting
- 46:09Connor Goad. I think it is. Giovanni Santillan
- 46:20versus Courtney Pennington. Oh, shit. Giovanni's
- 46:25moved up to 154. So that's fun. Nice. Rohan Polanco.
- 46:32He's fighting Christian Gomez. It's a welterweight
- 46:35fight. Polanco has some pretty good power, so
- 46:37it should be fun. And in the main event, WBO
- 46:45champ Xander Zayas versus WBA champ Abbas Baru.
- 46:53I don't think it's going to happen, but I want
- 46:56Baru to pull off the upset so badly. I would
- 46:59very much enjoy. I don't know why I just don't
- 47:06like Xander Zayas I think it's especially now
- 47:10that he has gone full grease in his look like
- 47:14have you noticed he greases his hair he's got
- 47:17the greasy mustache and the weird Zayas has gone
- 47:21full just fuckboy in his styling and I am against
- 47:26it I want Abbas Beru to win so badly Oh, I fear
- 47:34this is going to be... I think Zaius is going
- 47:38to be able to handle Beru as much as I would
- 47:41prefer Beru to win. Because it would be funnier.
- 47:47Yeah. Full grease. I thought you meant grease
- 47:54like the movie. Kind of. Yeah, that kind of fits.
- 48:00Like, the hair has greased the movie, for sure.
- 48:05But he's also got the just fucking... I like
- 48:09facial hair, but his is full, like, telenovela
- 48:15-style facial hair. It's not good. His little
- 48:19mustache says, yeah, I've been nude on camera.
- 48:22What of it? Yeah. You want to make a film? But
- 48:27yeah, that's the top -ranked card. And on the
- 48:32zone, ring six, Madison Square Garden. This card
- 48:39is top to bottom pretty damn good. Yeah, this
- 48:45one's worth the pay -per -view money, I think.
- 48:49Gerald Miller versus Kingsley Ibe. I don't know
- 48:56who Ibe is. I don't either. His nickname is the
- 49:01Black Lion. That's kind of hard. Ziad Almayouf
- 49:08versus Kevin Castillo. Ziad, he's a Saudi guy.
- 49:17He's a plant on all of the ring cards. But he's
- 49:22not bad. Yeah, he's fighting some unknown Ecuadorian?
- 49:31So his birthplace is Ecuador, his nationality
- 49:34is Spain, and his residence is Florida on BoxRec.
- 49:38Wonderful. Man of the world. The vacant WBC featherweight
- 49:46title, Bruce Carrington versus Carlos Castro.
- 49:51I know Carlos Castro is up in the rankings for
- 49:55this. I think he's like number two or three.
- 50:00I love Castro. I've been following him since
- 50:03he was on my regional scene. He's local to me,
- 50:08and he's sorry, buddy. I don't think he should
- 50:12be in the same ring as Bruce Carrington. Yeah,
- 50:15he loses every time he steps up. It's unfortunate.
- 50:20I would love to see Carlos Castro pull the upset
- 50:22here. It would be way too fucking funny. For
- 50:26Bruce Carrington to lose. But yeah. I fear that's
- 50:33not going to happen. I don't see it happening.
- 50:34Probably not. Keyshawn Davis is moving up to
- 50:39140. He will be fighting Jermaine Ortiz. Yeah.
- 50:47Hopefully Keyshawn can avoid bullshit this time.
- 50:54Yeah. I wonder if they're going to jump. Jermaine
- 50:56Ortiz afterwards. Yeah. I mean, he should be
- 51:02able to make weight, hopefully. Yeah, he made
- 51:08weight in his last fight. He made 140 in his
- 51:12last fight, so it shouldn't be hard. Carlos Adamas,
- 51:23DWBC. Middleweight champion versus Austin Williams.
- 51:30Please tell me he went back to ammo. Yeah, he
- 51:34is. Well, BoxRec says he is. It's such a better
- 51:38nickname. Yeah. In the main event, WBO 140 champ
- 51:48Teofimo Lopez versus Shakur Stevenson. who holds
- 51:54the title at 135. What's your official prediction
- 52:00for this one, Leo? My official prediction...
- 52:06I'm thinking that the prospect of fighting Shakur
- 52:17Stevenson is going to bring the best out of Teofimo.
- 52:22I think he's going to show up for this one. The
- 52:25good version of Teofimo is going to show up for
- 52:27this one. It's just difficult because Shakur
- 52:33is a fucking defensive wizard. He really is.
- 52:40If Zapata couldn't overwhelm him, I really don't
- 52:45see Teofimo doing it. I would like to see Tio
- 52:52win, but I agree. I think Shakur is going to
- 52:55just make Tio look foolish. As he does. And I
- 53:03do think the best Tio is going to show up and
- 53:06we will have no excuses to defend him. Yeah,
- 53:10that would... If he loses with no excuses, then
- 53:14I think it's better. Because he did his best.
- 53:19I agree, I just mean, I think this time we'll
- 53:23get good Tio, we'll show up, and it's just not
- 53:26going to be enough. Yeah, that's exactly how
- 53:29I feel about it. Still, clowns like Tio Fimo
- 53:40I think are good for the sport. To an extent.
- 53:45To an extent. I don't know, Tio makes me sad.
- 53:49I just really feel bad for him. I feel like he's
- 53:53been mistreated by his dad his whole life, and
- 53:57it's really fucked with him. I really would like
- 54:01to, if I could have a chance to have a conversation
- 54:04with him, I would have in my hand a pill and
- 54:07say, dude, Zoloft, alright? Please take this.
- 54:11It'll take the edge off, I promise. Yeah. Yeah,
- 54:15Teal makes me sad. I know he said some horrendous
- 54:19stuff and things, and I get flack for still cheering
- 54:22for him, but I don't know. Tio makes me sad,
- 54:27and I would like to see him do well. Yeah. Yeah,
- 54:31I'd like for him to do better in his life. In
- 54:35general. Yeah. Not specifically boxing. I would
- 54:39just like Tio to do well. Yes. But that's it
- 54:47for the very busy Saturday. And so we started
- 54:52off with Probox and we're finishing with fucking
- 54:55Zufa. Sunday, February 1st at the Meta Apex on
- 55:04Paramount+. I would highly encourage people to
- 55:11find an alternative way to watch this. Because
- 55:15fuck Zufa? Exactly. This card is actually not
- 55:20bad. Of the three that we have confirmed right
- 55:24now. So, starting off is Hot Rod Kalachik versus
- 55:33Oleksandr Vozdik. It's a light heavyweight fight.
- 55:38Probably going to be 10 rounds, but... That one
- 55:42has potential to be very fun. Yeah. That could
- 55:45be a pretty good fight. Vozdik has proved he's
- 55:48durable. Kalajic is fun. Should be a good time.
- 55:53Pro box. Pro box good. Serhey Bohachuk versus
- 55:58Radza Butaev. Bohachuk being on a Zufa card makes
- 56:05me sad. He's promoted by 360, so... It makes
- 56:10perfect sense, but it makes me sad. Yeah, I wish
- 56:13that... Bohochuk went elsewhere instead of ending
- 56:18up here. Butaev isn't terrible. He cut his teeth
- 56:27at 147. Moving up to 154 makes sense because
- 56:31he's been inactive for the past three years.
- 56:34I think he's fought once in the last three years.
- 56:39Overall... I think the inactivity is going to
- 56:43be a problem for Butaev, but not a bad name for
- 56:48Zufa to pick up. He's a good competitor, good
- 56:53contender. Ah, shit. Rayo Valenzuela versus Diego
- 57:01Torres. I like Rayo. I'll have to tune in for
- 57:07him. Yeah, I don't know who Diego Torres is.
- 57:14So, yeah. Can't really tell you much. No, I don't
- 57:20recognize very many of the names on his box rec
- 57:24either. He lost to Murataya. Looks like the rest
- 57:30of his fights were all in Mexico. Well, that's
- 57:35how we round out the weekend. It makes me sad
- 57:39that Zufa's actually putting on good cards, kind
- 57:42of. Yeah, this is... These three, that's a decent
- 57:47offering. Yeah. If it wasn't Zufa, I'd be excited
- 57:52for it. Yes. But because it's Zufa... Fuck Dana
- 57:58White. Alternative methods. Alright, let me...
- 58:05I'm going to cut in the conversation with Jacob
- 58:08Wright. All right. Holy shit. It's a special
- 58:14edition of Boxing Before Dark. Joined by Jacob
- 58:18out of Australia. How goes it? Hello. How's it?
- 58:23How's it? Pretty good, mate. I think we're just
- 58:25reeling off the Zarafa versus Zoo event from
- 58:30last night. So certainly an interesting day.
- 58:34for the country in boxing with some other pretty
- 58:36recent news as well. Before we talk about that
- 58:40stuff, I did want to get your opinion on... It
- 58:45was an American conference, but it was the National
- 58:49Combat Sports Summit. And there were some pretty
- 58:52big changes that the Association of Boxing Commissions
- 58:58in the U .S., what they put together. One of
- 59:01the key ones that I liked, The push to eliminate
- 59:0510 -10 rounds. What do you think? Well, it depends
- 59:14on if they're going to have an all -back criteria
- 59:17for how they should judge a round if it is a
- 59:2010 -10. Because different judges are going to
- 59:23value different things. You know, you might have
- 59:25someone who's prioritizing pure aggression in
- 59:28the round. You might have someone who's just
- 59:30prioritizing overall cleanliness. If you're going
- 59:34to eliminate 10 -10 rounds when it's really,
- 59:36really close, you need to understand what the
- 59:39judge is going to base it off because I think
- 59:42right now there's a lot of contentiousness about,
- 59:45you know, what does a 10 -9 round actually look
- 59:48like? Because to be honest, most people don't
- 59:50even agree on that at the moment, right? Like,
- 59:52there's a lot of people where, even in a fight
- 59:55where, in my opinion, I thought it was so obvious,
- 59:57like Canelo versus Crawford, but that was just...
- 1:00:00In my opinion, at the very end, that was just
- 1:00:02a beatdown. That was just pure class and quality.
- 1:00:05People were still arguing that Canelo was the
- 1:00:08aggressor there. So I think if they go ahead
- 1:00:11with that, I'd like to see some clarity about
- 1:00:14what they're going to define as the main factors
- 1:00:19in a 10 -9 round going forward. Because there's
- 1:00:24a lot of lacking of clarity there. Like in some
- 1:00:28areas, you know exactly what they're looking
- 1:00:30for, right? Like if we're in the amateurs, especially
- 1:00:32certain countries, judges will value certain
- 1:00:34things more than others. So if they do set that
- 1:00:37forward, I want to see if they have any more
- 1:00:40that they want to say on what the judges will
- 1:00:42be instructed to do in the event that they do
- 1:00:44believe there is a 10 -10 route. And another
- 1:00:49one, this one I did not care for quite as much.
- 1:00:52The Association of Boxing Commissions wants...
- 1:00:56the judges to more liberally award 10 -8 rounds
- 1:00:59in cases when a fighter decisively wins a round?
- 1:01:04Yeah. This one needs a lot more clarification,
- 1:01:09I think. Oh, absolutely. Because what do you,
- 1:01:13like... What does decisively wins a round? What
- 1:01:16does that even mean? Well, yeah, what's the threshold?
- 1:01:20Because otherwise, something like, in my opinion,
- 1:01:22Hitchens vs. Kambosos would have been... 10 -8
- 1:01:25in nearly every round, you know? Like, there's
- 1:01:29a lot of fights that are like that, where a guy
- 1:01:30just clearly looks like they're in a class above,
- 1:01:32but it also raises the question of, are they
- 1:01:37going to devalue knockdowns in other areas of
- 1:01:41the sport as well? Which, if they go in that
- 1:01:44direction, I actually won't be overly opposed
- 1:01:46to it, in terms of preserving the future of the
- 1:01:48sport, but I think it's one of those things where
- 1:01:51it's like, who's making the call to do that?
- 1:01:55That's going to take a lot of trial and error.
- 1:01:58I think that is just super ripe for corruption.
- 1:02:03Yeah, exactly. I don't like the more 10 -8 rounds.
- 1:02:10I think even if they're giving more, they need
- 1:02:13to be pretty sparse with them. They need to be
- 1:02:18earned. Because when I heard that, my first thought
- 1:02:22was, okay, so... What happens, because we went
- 1:02:26back to the criteria where things were, you know,
- 1:02:29different people looking at things differently.
- 1:02:31If a guy is like, take a pitbull cruise type
- 1:02:36fighter, for example, you know, constantly pressuring,
- 1:02:39pushing up against the ropes, trying to cut the
- 1:02:41ring off. If you have someone who values aggression
- 1:02:44more than cleanliness and they go in the direction
- 1:02:47of seeing something like that is what makes up
- 1:02:51a 10 -8 round. And then you get to the end of
- 1:02:54the round and then you realize, oh, we actually
- 1:02:57didn't land that many punches. How are those
- 1:03:00sorts of discrepancies going to be addressed?
- 1:03:03Because, you know, if we can't, like I said,
- 1:03:06if we can't agree most of the time on what a
- 1:03:0810 -9 round is, because there's a lot of people
- 1:03:11who, you know, will be in boxing and they go,
- 1:03:13oh, yeah, they just want cleanliness of work.
- 1:03:14Other people are going to go, oh, but what about
- 1:03:18the aggression? What about bringing the fight
- 1:03:19to them, pushing forward? If you then sort of
- 1:03:24up the ante on that, I think that is a good point
- 1:03:27for corruption. Because let's say you get to
- 1:03:29the championship rounds of the fight, right?
- 1:03:31Look at something like B -Ball vs. Better BF.
- 1:03:33That last, you know, 9 to 12 stretch of rounds.
- 1:03:37That 10 -8 could absolutely change everything.
- 1:03:41And I like the idea of one good round being able
- 1:03:44to change the fight, but I also don't because
- 1:03:46it's going to be so subjective. Like, at what
- 1:03:49point... does a 10 -8 round become just as good
- 1:03:53or even better than knocking someone down? Because
- 1:03:56I think there's some examples where it makes
- 1:03:58sense to me. Like, for example, some of those
- 1:04:00rounds in that Stevenson versus a Theta fight,
- 1:04:02I thought I would understand. Because even though
- 1:04:07it wasn't knocking him out, he's completely outclassing
- 1:04:10him. But if it's anything less than that and
- 1:04:12he gets given a 10 -8, that is going to be a
- 1:04:14complete disaster. I want to see them add something
- 1:04:17about, like, one fighter being hurt like if you
- 1:04:22really really buzz somebody and outbox them that
- 1:04:26round i can see it being a 10 -8 like if they're
- 1:04:29wobbly but don't go down but generally i don't
- 1:04:33think many rounds are 10 -8s no not at all yeah
- 1:04:40it's and if any of them are they're all later
- 1:04:43rounds in the fights too when there's a complete
- 1:04:45difference in their levels of energy and The
- 1:04:48problem is that you're asking for those 10 -8
- 1:04:52rounds to bring the biggest score discrepancies
- 1:04:54when they're most likely to happen at the very
- 1:04:57end, which is conversely when they're most likely
- 1:04:59to change the result of a fight. Yeah, I don't
- 1:05:04like the push for 10 -8s. Not at all. I do like
- 1:05:09getting rid of 10 -10 rounds, but I... pointed
- 1:05:13this out to Leo before. I don't think that's
- 1:05:16a problem in America anyways. I think this was
- 1:05:19a very... Britain has a lot of 10 -10s. I think
- 1:05:24this was the Americans being like, come on, England,
- 1:05:28get your shit together. Like... I can't complain
- 1:05:33about that. And the last bit... Jack Reese, the
- 1:05:46referee, former referee, was like the head speaker
- 1:05:51of the conference. His words, we've got to get
- 1:05:57them out of there when they are no longer competitive.
- 1:05:59Activity does not mean competitiveness. So they're
- 1:06:04talking about pulling the plug a little bit quicker.
- 1:06:09I'm very happy to hear that. I'm actually very
- 1:06:12happy to hear that because I understand that
- 1:06:14it's a sport with the ethos of being a fighter
- 1:06:18who doesn't go down at its core but in that same
- 1:06:22vein we can't do that forever not when we're
- 1:06:24learning each and every day what we are currently
- 1:06:27learning about brain health and if we want to
- 1:06:32see this sport continue there's going to be regulatory
- 1:06:34pressures in that direction and I think The next
- 1:06:39concern I would have, though, is what happens
- 1:06:42when someone is competitive, but they're not,
- 1:06:45they're also not completely healthy when they're
- 1:06:48in there. Because I think back to the Shigeyoka
- 1:06:51fight, where he, and I think Shan might remember
- 1:06:55this, but in my opinion, he looked very competitive
- 1:06:58towards the end. Like, he was boxing, he was
- 1:07:01boxing really well. But there obviously needed
- 1:07:05to be some sort of other ways of checking, because
- 1:07:09People can just go through anything with adrenaline.
- 1:07:12And I like the idea of getting guys out there
- 1:07:14when they're really hurt. You know, there's going
- 1:07:17to be a lot of people that complain about early
- 1:07:19stoppages, but the people that complain about
- 1:07:21them, they're not the people that has to face
- 1:07:23the consequences of a late stoppage. Yeah. I
- 1:07:27think the kind of most famous two Japanese ones
- 1:07:31lately would be Anaguchi and Shigeoka. And honestly,
- 1:07:36I don't think this change with quotes around
- 1:07:38it would help them anyways. They both looked
- 1:07:42competitive. They looked very good. Yeah. But
- 1:07:47it's not going to stop everything. No. But I'm
- 1:07:55worried that they're going to overcorrect, and
- 1:07:58we're going to get a bunch of, like, bullshit
- 1:08:00British stoppages. Like, I agree protecting the
- 1:08:07fighters is the most important, but there's going
- 1:08:09to be some big controversies. Like, even the
- 1:08:13Parker stoppage. That was a bad stoppage. that
- 1:08:19is one that a lot of people did raise concern
- 1:08:22about i think in parker's circumstance too where
- 1:08:24he has a history of being dropped and coming
- 1:08:28back to win those fights as well like against
- 1:08:30his arm yeah well and that isn't even the most
- 1:08:35hurt he was in that fight and he landed the last
- 1:08:39two punches that landed like i don't know i'm
- 1:08:44on the fence with this one i do want to protect
- 1:08:46the fighters but i also don't want referees deciding
- 1:08:51the outcomes of fights yeah look at the end of
- 1:08:57the day traders and doctors need to be able to
- 1:09:02have a bit more balls in these situations because
- 1:09:05nobody ever wants to be the person to tell their
- 1:09:08own fighter that's enough but we need to have
- 1:09:12a culture where that is something that happens
- 1:09:14and i think part of that also comes down to and
- 1:09:18this is probably the one area where we can learn
- 1:09:21from the ufc is that we need to stop prioritizing
- 1:09:25that on the record you know and that's that's
- 1:09:29less just the promoters and everything but it
- 1:09:31needs to be on the fan side as well where when
- 1:09:34we look at a guy and they get a loss that they
- 1:09:37don't need to start suing people and doing everything
- 1:09:41to try and keep that one off their record because
- 1:09:44that ups the ante so much in those situations
- 1:09:48where some guys should be out there but losing
- 1:09:51is it's it's considered a sin really in the realm
- 1:09:56of boxing which you know i mean it's crazy because
- 1:10:00you think about any other sport right it's like
- 1:10:02man you if you lose 12 games in an nba season
- 1:10:06you're considered one of the greatest teams of
- 1:10:08all time If you lose one fight in boxing, for
- 1:10:12a lot of guys, you are wiped out of any all -time
- 1:10:15great discussions or pound -for -pound discussions
- 1:10:16immediately. Yeah, that's crazy. But I always
- 1:10:22like fighters that tend to get losses anyways.
- 1:10:26And that's it. We need to start it from that,
- 1:10:31because then we can create a culture where coaches
- 1:10:35understand that they're able to... pull a guy
- 1:10:38out and they can go right we'll come back to
- 1:10:41him next time you know because that's gonna put
- 1:10:44us in a position where not only do we get to
- 1:10:47see more great fights but we also aren't gonna
- 1:10:50have levels where it's like if you don't do something
- 1:10:57that you don't really need to do in terms of
- 1:10:59putting your brain health at risk that it's not
- 1:11:02going to cost you everything because That's very
- 1:11:05much, you know, it's the winner takes it all.
- 1:11:08Boxing, that's how it is. But there's also other
- 1:11:11ways to go about that culture if we're looking
- 1:11:14at other sports. I think if we move to a world
- 1:11:19where we start looking at things like title defenses
- 1:11:22better than your overall record, that's when
- 1:11:26we'll get there. But then that's a whole other
- 1:11:28conversation about, you know, what are we doing
- 1:11:31to value a title? Is it actually worth holding
- 1:11:34a title? You've got all those belt fees and everything.
- 1:11:39So much. Something interesting that you mentioned
- 1:11:47was about once we get away from the culture of
- 1:11:51protecting your undefeated record, we'll get
- 1:11:55into a space where more coaches are going to
- 1:11:58be willing to step in on behalf of their fighter.
- 1:12:01I hope so. That's something that Jack Reese brought
- 1:12:04up was his words here. Fighters don't like that.
- 1:12:09And we know father trainers seem to never throw
- 1:12:12in the towel on their sons. And the sons never
- 1:12:15quit in front of their fathers. That's true.
- 1:12:21I don't know why he made it about fathers and
- 1:12:23sons. I really don't. Because you can say the
- 1:12:26same thing about a lot of fights. where nobody's
- 1:12:30related in the corner it's true but i think it
- 1:12:34also i think the point is interesting when it
- 1:12:37comes to the topic of you think about a father's
- 1:12:41role is to like keep their kid out of danger
- 1:12:43but then you look at how that sort of subverts
- 1:12:47in the context of father -son coaching so what
- 1:12:52not that i actually think he was completely there
- 1:13:00But I think you raise an interesting point. I
- 1:13:04do think corners need to be more ready to throw
- 1:13:07in the towel. There's been quite a few fights
- 1:13:10where I don't understand why the corner didn't
- 1:13:13stop it. 100%. Well, I mean, Timzu, that's probably
- 1:13:20like the best example. That's the best recent
- 1:13:23example for sure. Yeah, you gotta make business
- 1:13:26decisions. you gotta go right this guy's long
- 1:13:31-term health is you know it's gonna be in jeopardy
- 1:13:36because you're in a boxing ring but there's levels
- 1:13:41of jeopardy that you don't quite need to reach
- 1:13:43because i think we look at you know it's boxing
- 1:13:47it's rocky movies it's comebacks it's getting
- 1:13:50knocked down and still winning the fight in the
- 1:13:52last round but we gotta We don't have to completely
- 1:13:56let go of that but I think there needs to be
- 1:13:58a bit of a loosened grip. Yeah. Because otherwise
- 1:14:04we need to be accepting and cognizant of the
- 1:14:09fact that we will end up in situations with hematomas
- 1:14:12and unfortunate deaths and not just that but
- 1:14:15I think the discussion also needs to open up
- 1:14:18about CTE and support for boxers after their
- 1:14:22career. because we can talk about in -fight safety
- 1:14:26all we want but I think it's post -fight and
- 1:14:30more specifically post -career safety that I
- 1:14:33want to see them really make a point of at the
- 1:14:35moment because as a lot of guys over the last
- 1:14:40years who have finished their career and they're
- 1:14:43not quite sure what they're going to do after
- 1:14:44their career and they sort of spiral so I think
- 1:14:49about that when I think about the concepts of
- 1:14:54stoppages and trainers throwing in towels because
- 1:14:59I don't think anybody ever thinks of that in
- 1:15:01the moment. Yeah. The post -career care is something...
- 1:15:12It's one of the main reasons that I... As much
- 1:15:17as he's a jackass in his fighting career, Jake
- 1:15:21Paul... He's a big advocate for post -career
- 1:15:25care for fighters. Trying to create a collective
- 1:15:29bargaining organization for fighters as a whole.
- 1:15:33Like pension and stuff. Yeah, exactly. I always
- 1:15:38advocate for Jake Paul just because I know he
- 1:15:41genuinely does care. Behind the scenes at least.
- 1:15:47Yeah. I think so as well. I think there's, and
- 1:15:50that's not even, not even to advocate for him
- 1:15:53as a personal boxer, but there are things he
- 1:15:57is bringing to the sport that are objectively
- 1:15:59good for the sport. There's a few of them, and
- 1:16:02I think that that should be something that is
- 1:16:06noted. A lot of people, they're not going to
- 1:16:09see that. They're just going to dismiss him just
- 1:16:11at face value and not really look into, you know,
- 1:16:14the significance of some of those moves, because
- 1:16:18he was someone who made a really big point of
- 1:16:22Dana White's treatment of fighters, and I think
- 1:16:28that's part of why it upsets me that we're getting
- 1:16:30to where we are now, where you know, with Zupa
- 1:16:34boxing and trying to move the sport in that direction.
- 1:16:41Oh man, speaking of which, Jai Upataya. Signs
- 1:16:47with Zubin. This fucking sucks. Terrible diapers.
- 1:16:58Look, I'm... I hope he's getting paid a lot.
- 1:17:02Because this is a dangerous sport and you can
- 1:17:06take your money as it comes. But while it may
- 1:17:09be good for him, and I don't necessarily blame
- 1:17:13him, I think it was inevitable that... Somebody
- 1:17:16was going to do this. But the problem is, once
- 1:17:20you give legitimacy to Zufa and their exploits
- 1:17:26with Saudi Arabia and Riyadh, what then happens
- 1:17:32is they keep swallowing up that market share.
- 1:17:36And that's something that can happen quickly
- 1:17:39in boxing, a lot quicker than people may think.
- 1:17:42Because think about, you know, how much you're
- 1:17:45able to watch on DAZN now, and how much the landscape
- 1:17:48has changed, even just over the last few years,
- 1:17:50in terms of the top -ranking Golden Boy deals
- 1:17:52with their respective broadcasters. So, if you
- 1:17:58think about how quickly things change in that
- 1:18:00sense, the fact that we now have that branch
- 1:18:04of legitimacy with Zooka, it now becomes a point
- 1:18:09where... Others are going to start taking it
- 1:18:11seriously. And the moment that market share goes
- 1:18:13in, they are not going to keep paying fighters
- 1:18:16like this forever. It's Saudi Arabia, so they
- 1:18:19actually can. Like, contrary to popular belief,
- 1:18:21this is not some, like, unsustainable thing,
- 1:18:25at least for, like, the next probably 50 years
- 1:18:27or whatever. But just because you can pay for
- 1:18:30something doesn't mean you're going to. Yeah,
- 1:18:32shareholders at the end of the day, right? Well,
- 1:18:36that's it there's gonna be now that it's with
- 1:18:38super now that it's with you know, all of the
- 1:18:41Collective shareholders that they're gonna be
- 1:18:44getting with UFC people that are coming in that
- 1:18:49is gonna happen. So Yeah, it's disappointing
- 1:18:54there's gonna be a lot of money That's gonna
- 1:18:59be out of the fighters hands and into the shareholders
- 1:19:01hands. That's what upsets me the most That's
- 1:19:05gonna be This is a sport where, realistically,
- 1:19:08boxers get a lot of money, but only a certain
- 1:19:12amount of them really get to that money. And
- 1:19:15if we're not going to be protecting boxers, then
- 1:19:18paying them less is just something that's going
- 1:19:20to worry me even more. So, the moment that market
- 1:19:26share carries over, no matter how much Opetai
- 1:19:28is getting paid right now, it's going to lead
- 1:19:30to a point where fighters down the line, they're
- 1:19:32getting a lot less. And I think that in itself
- 1:19:36is going to set the sport backwards. Realistically,
- 1:19:39the sport should not be looking at the UFC and
- 1:19:42trying to be like that. I wonder what happens
- 1:19:46with the belt after this. At least it's the IBF,
- 1:19:50so they'll strip them pretty quick, probably.
- 1:19:52Yeah, I'd imagine. They can, and honestly, they
- 1:19:56should. Because if you're in a boxing league...
- 1:20:02Or whatever it is. I don't know how Zupa's going
- 1:20:06to work either. Currently, they were working
- 1:20:08with the other belts in a respect for the NLO
- 1:20:12vs Crawford event, but I don't think it's going
- 1:20:15to be like that forever. It's going to be that
- 1:20:16buddy -buddy. Well, and they weren't very buddy
- 1:20:21-buddy because they tried to stop What's -His
- 1:20:23-Name from coming in the ring with the belts
- 1:20:25and stuff like that. Yeah. That's it. It's only
- 1:20:30ever going to get more and more hostile, I'd
- 1:20:32imagine, over time. So upsetting moment for the
- 1:20:36sport. I hope it's not a sign of things to come.
- 1:20:45Speaking of things to come, Tim Zhu versus Errol
- 1:20:48Spence. Have you heard about this? Oh, I have
- 1:20:53heard rumblings. I have not believed them. You
- 1:21:00don't think it's going to happen? Look, if it
- 1:21:07happens, the fight will be in Australia on a
- 1:21:10no -limit card, because I believe that they are
- 1:21:13the only people shameless enough. I don't think
- 1:21:18they're the only people shameless enough at all.
- 1:21:21They probably would be. I think there are many
- 1:21:24places in the US that would put Errol Spence
- 1:21:27on a card. Look, Tim Zu is going to be a bit
- 1:21:35busy at the moment because of what transpired
- 1:21:37last night, I'd imagine. Him and his brother,
- 1:21:40I think. Him fighting Errol Spence is probably
- 1:21:45really good for the both of them. I think it
- 1:21:48gives Tim Zu a chance to go against someone who
- 1:21:51was an insanely world -class fighter. But Errol
- 1:21:54Spence, I believe that he should at least be
- 1:21:56getting some sort of tune -up. that, I don't
- 1:21:59think he should jump straight into it. Which
- 1:22:01is a crazy thing to say about Tim Zhu, who previously
- 1:22:04every single bit of dialogue said he needed a
- 1:22:06tune -up, but he's just had one, so he's probably
- 1:22:10good to go. I think Spence is so shot that if
- 1:22:15he tries to have a tune -up, people will realize
- 1:22:17how shot he is, and the money goes away. That
- 1:22:22could be it. And that fight, like, they are still
- 1:22:26both big enough names for that fight to actually
- 1:22:29fall quite a fair bit. So, this could be a situation
- 1:22:33where Spence has the ability to cash it out.
- 1:22:37Not that I really think he should be doing this.
- 1:22:41Like, it's like, man, if he believes he can win,
- 1:22:46good. Do it. But if it's for any reason other
- 1:22:50than that, then... I am not interested in seeing
- 1:22:54this. And last bit, Nikita Zu and Michael Zarafa.
- 1:23:06Where to begin? Look, we had a fight card where
- 1:23:16Liam Wilson, one of Australia's best boxers,
- 1:23:23at the moment. I think anybody that's watched
- 1:23:25him would tend to agree. He might not have the
- 1:23:28same notoriety as a few other fighters at the
- 1:23:30moment, but in terms of what he's been able to
- 1:23:32do, he has pieced together a very respectable
- 1:23:34career for himself and he's continuing to go
- 1:23:36as well. He's had a good streak of fights lately.
- 1:23:39He's been very active. Now, he was placed behind
- 1:23:44two fights on this card. He was placed behind
- 1:23:50the lead -up to the main, and then he was also
- 1:23:53placed behind former NRL player Nelson Osofa
- 1:23:58-Solomona fighting former NRL player Jeremy Lattam.
- 1:24:02Now, there is nothing that explains boxing better
- 1:24:05in this country than one of its best co -fighters
- 1:24:08being placed behind Korea. Yeah, yeah, basically.
- 1:24:16Former footy players and... a fight of two heavyweights
- 1:24:22who are, compared to Liam Wilson, relatively
- 1:24:25not that accomplished. And that's not to disrespect
- 1:24:29any of them. You know, everyone that went into
- 1:24:32the ring did an excellent job. You know, they
- 1:24:35have trained very hard. They've been in camp
- 1:24:37for this and they've taken it seriously. But
- 1:24:39that is the prioritization of Australian fighting.
- 1:24:43And this fight, first and foremost, if you have
- 1:24:45followed Michael Zarapa's career, you knew from
- 1:24:48the jump that anything to do with him was going
- 1:24:51to bring some chaos. Whether it was the time
- 1:24:56that he pulled out of the Tetsu fight, or it
- 1:24:59was the time where he wanted to pull out of another
- 1:25:03fight that they had. I believe Pete Bale, one
- 1:25:05of the broadcasters, mentioned, but the doctors
- 1:25:07said that they wouldn't be able to clear him.
- 1:25:11rightfully to say not fight so he has a history
- 1:25:16of events ending up in this way he's got the
- 1:25:20reputation as being australia's most hated boxer
- 1:25:23whether that's a deserved thing or not but when
- 1:25:27you come into the fight with this context and
- 1:25:29you get to the second round and then there's
- 1:25:32the cut over the eye and to be honest like that
- 1:25:35is It didn't look like a big cut, but the photos
- 1:25:38circulating around are after it got cleaned up.
- 1:25:41It wasn't when the blood was actually flowing.
- 1:25:43Now, the problem... It still wasn't a very big
- 1:25:46cut, even when the blood was flowing. And the
- 1:25:49blood was flowing mostly around his eye. Yeah,
- 1:25:53it wasn't massive. But I, as an athlete, I'm
- 1:25:59not going to judge someone for saying that they
- 1:26:00can't see to the doctor. Now, the problems for
- 1:26:03me began after that. He told the doctor he couldn't
- 1:26:07see. Sure. You can't see early in the fight,
- 1:26:11whatever. It's going to disappoint all the drunk,
- 1:26:14overweight gambling addicts in the crowd, but
- 1:26:16they're not in the ring. They're not risking
- 1:26:18their health and safety. This isn't up to them.
- 1:26:21Now, the problem comes when Zarafa then gets
- 1:26:24up and says, oh, I said I was good to go. I didn't
- 1:26:27say I couldn't see. And then they immediately
- 1:26:30play a video of exactly what he said. And he
- 1:26:34exactly said, I can't see, as an exact quote,
- 1:26:38four times. Literal exact quote, four times in
- 1:26:42that sequence. And then after that, his cut man
- 1:26:46goes on Twitter and posts the actual swab of
- 1:26:50blood that he took. And it was nothing. So Zaraffa's
- 1:26:56own cut man went to Twitter to say that it wasn't
- 1:27:00a big cut. So, when you're taking into the context
- 1:27:04that, it's just, it is such a circus show. And
- 1:27:10I also believe that, like, if you're spending
- 1:27:13that much money, because it was a $70 pay -per
- 1:27:15-view, if you're spending a $70 pay -per -view
- 1:27:17to watch Nikita Zu versus Michael Zarafov, that
- 1:27:20is natural selection. I am sorry. With all due
- 1:27:25respect, with all due respect, if you were a
- 1:27:29viewer of this fight, who spent 70 dollars you
- 1:27:33just didn't know better and you should have especially
- 1:27:35when this country actually does have some decent
- 1:27:38fighters you could have been watching because
- 1:27:40all of these people if they wanted if they actually
- 1:27:43wanted good boxing and to be entertained they
- 1:27:45would have been watching max mcintyre and kira
- 1:27:48rustin when they had their recent fight but they
- 1:27:51weren't because they wanted to watch footy players
- 1:27:53and tim zoo's brother and michael zaraffa because
- 1:27:56that's who they get angry at on facebook so I
- 1:28:00think I already have such a lack of empathy for
- 1:28:05the sort of people that are really passionate
- 1:28:07about these sorts of fights that I'm not as angry
- 1:28:12at this as everyone else is. I mostly just feel
- 1:28:17bad for Nikita, to be honest with you. He is,
- 1:28:21by all accounts, Nikita seems like such an incredibly
- 1:28:25likable and calm person. Like, I've never seen
- 1:28:29Nikita really lose his cool, be all of himself.
- 1:28:35This is a guy that spends, by all accounts, most
- 1:28:38of his time just meditating and boxing. He's
- 1:28:41a very calm and chill human being. And he didn't
- 1:28:44even, he wasn't even that disparaging towards
- 1:28:47Zaraffa after the fight either. Tim certainly
- 1:28:49was. Tim was pissed. He was calling him all sorts
- 1:28:51of names. You could see all the videos of him
- 1:28:53yelling at Zaraffa, getting in the ring for it
- 1:28:56too. I mean, kind of deserved. If anybody gets
- 1:29:00to talk shit about somebody pulling out of a
- 1:29:03fight for blood in their eyes, Tim gets to talk
- 1:29:05all the shit he wants. And also, this is the
- 1:29:08same Tim that's had to listen to Zaraffa calling
- 1:29:11him out for the last four years after Zaraffa
- 1:29:13already didn't want to fight the first time.
- 1:29:15So there's Tim. He can say whatever he wants.
- 1:29:20I think Tim Zhu has earned his respect in the
- 1:29:22grand scheme of Australian boxing to be able
- 1:29:24to say whatever he wants to Michael Zaraffa.
- 1:29:28However, I think the real comedy of this fight
- 1:29:32is with George Rose, who, for those who don't
- 1:29:36know, the Rose brothers are in charge of No Limit,
- 1:29:39who are the promotion company that put this event
- 1:29:41on. George Rose has to go up and stand in front
- 1:29:45of the crowd because this was his Jay Gatsby
- 1:29:49party, right? Like, this was him bringing everyone
- 1:29:52out. This is Zu versus Zarafa. This is the fight
- 1:29:56that everyone's been talking about for years.
- 1:29:57It's going to be like Green versus Mundine and
- 1:30:00it ends in less than two rounds and he's being
- 1:30:03booed by the crowd having to get up and apologize
- 1:30:05to everyone. That, to me, was incredible. Considering,
- 1:30:13you know, the irony of how fighters like Liam
- 1:30:17Wilson get sort of put on the bottom of these
- 1:30:20cards. And when we have these incredible boxes,
- 1:30:26yeah, that was a great moment of irony for me,
- 1:30:31I think. For him to have to stand up and say
- 1:30:33that this event disappointed because he put that
- 1:30:35level of faith in the sort of, I don't want to
- 1:30:42say clowns, I think that's, I'm not that harsh,
- 1:30:46but certainly members of a circus. active participants
- 1:30:52in the circus system, I will say. So that's where
- 1:30:59we are with Australian boxing. And anybody that's
- 1:31:02mad about what transpired last night, I truly
- 1:31:05think that what happened last night wasn't anything
- 1:31:07that different to what usually happens in Australian
- 1:31:11boxing. I think it was just Australia holding
- 1:31:13a mirror up at the way that it views boxing.
- 1:31:17I think everyone that looked at that and got
- 1:31:20absolutely disgusted needs to sit with themselves
- 1:31:22and understand that this is what they have been
- 1:31:24asking for. They might not believe it, but yes,
- 1:31:28you have in fact been asking for this because
- 1:31:31when you are treating, you know, Paul Gallen
- 1:31:35as one of the biggest boxers in the country.
- 1:31:39You know, Gallen versus Sonny Bill Williams had
- 1:31:42more people asking for illegal streams on it
- 1:31:44than anything else, and it was the same for Gallen
- 1:31:46versus Brown and Gallen versus Hewney. That is
- 1:31:48what this country wants, and it can try and trick
- 1:31:52everyone and pretend that it wants anything else,
- 1:31:54but when you look at where the money flows, it's
- 1:31:57not. So, Australia, if you're mad that Nikita
- 1:32:02Zuba versus Michael Zarafa went the way that
- 1:32:04it did, you need to ask why you're spending so
- 1:32:06much money on these no -limit fights. when there
- 1:32:10are some legitimately incredible boxing talents
- 1:32:13in this country coming through. You know, when
- 1:32:16we are looking at guys like Tara Moana, guys
- 1:32:19like Liam Wilson, guys, you know, people like
- 1:32:22Sugar Neeks, when you see the run that she is
- 1:32:24on right now, absolutely incredible. And then
- 1:32:27understanding that this is what you asked for
- 1:32:30because that's not where you're putting your
- 1:32:32money. You're putting it into the ex -footy players
- 1:32:34fighting and you're getting scared and confused.
- 1:32:38when these cards end up like this. Because one
- 1:32:41of the last times Michael Zareffa fought, what
- 1:32:43happened? His brother punched somebody in the
- 1:32:45ring. His brother punched an opposition trainer
- 1:32:48in the ring and they had to have the entire stadium
- 1:32:51supported. Not the stadium, the ring. But that
- 1:32:55was the same card that Nikita Zu was fighting
- 1:32:57on. This is what you asked for. You ordered this.
- 1:33:04So... It's fucking surprising that Zaraffa is
- 1:33:07still getting fights if this is his history.
- 1:33:10I didn't know all that. I didn't know all the
- 1:33:11history about him either. Australian boxing is
- 1:33:15so hard to watch outside of Australia. Everyone
- 1:33:18hates Michael Zaraffa. That's why he's popular.
- 1:33:22It's the exact same as Paul Gallen. People in
- 1:33:25Australia do not watch boxing. They hate watch
- 1:33:27boxing. That makes sense. Yeah, that's not good.
- 1:33:33No. They are watching you because they want you
- 1:33:38to lose. It is tall poppy syndrome. There's no
- 1:33:42real country that gets so... We hate our fighters.
- 1:33:52We really do. I think there's a few guys that
- 1:33:55we really, really, really get behind. I'm really
- 1:33:58proud of how we get behind Tim Zhu. But there's
- 1:34:01a lot of other guys who just are not afforded
- 1:34:03that. And at the end of the day, they're the
- 1:34:08guys who really could be using it. Like I look
- 1:34:10at when I mentioned Kira Rustin and the talent
- 1:34:15that he is, he won't get any near the coverage.
- 1:34:18Callum Peters, they're trying to put him on through
- 1:34:20no limit. The people, they're just not watching
- 1:34:22Callum Peters like they're watching a few of
- 1:34:24these other guys. And that honestly upsets me
- 1:34:28because he really can't fight. so it's just it's
- 1:34:34done it to itself and if we as a country want
- 1:34:38to watch good boxing you need to stop only ever
- 1:34:41putting your money up when it's an nrl player
- 1:34:44that's fighting you need to start going okay
- 1:34:46who are who are some of the actual fighters in
- 1:34:49this country like google it right now like who
- 1:34:51are some of the up -and -coming australian boxers
- 1:34:54and start looking into their careers otherwise
- 1:34:58You get what you pay for, and if you got sucked
- 1:35:01into that, you always should have known that
- 1:35:04it was going to be a circus. It's not a good
- 1:35:08start to 2026 for Australian boxing, anyways.
- 1:35:13Well, that's... It gets what it deserves. And
- 1:35:19I say that as a big, huge lover of sport in this
- 1:35:22country, but... There's some amazing people that
- 1:35:27are going to be at the forefront of Australian
- 1:35:31boxing over the next few years, but people are
- 1:35:35not following what our Olympians are doing, the
- 1:35:37amateur systems. They just fight whatever footy
- 1:35:41players No Limit tells them to watch. It's going
- 1:35:48to be that way. until we start to actually have
- 1:35:51some respect for the art of boxing instead of
- 1:35:54just brawling and just wanting to see blood on
- 1:35:59TV. The top 10 Australian fighters on BoxRec,
- 1:36:06so, you know, grain of salt, the pound -for -pound
- 1:36:09list, Jai Obatai is at the top, Liam Parrow,
- 1:36:14Sam Goodman, Tim Zhu, Michael Zarafa. Nikita
- 1:36:20Zu, Liam Wilson, Imam Kataev, Cesar Tapia, and
- 1:36:25John Manu. Yeah. Tara Moana's not on the list
- 1:36:30yet? No. There's a few guys that are really unlucky
- 1:36:34to miss out on that list. I think Tara Moana
- 1:36:38should be in the top 10 list. Without a doubt.
- 1:36:45Here's the thing. Even... Even if you had put
- 1:36:48Tera Moana in there. I mean, even to be honest,
- 1:36:51Liam Parra... People, they do not get behind
- 1:36:56Liam Parra like they get up for the rapper or
- 1:37:00Zeus, right? Like this... They don't like his
- 1:37:03style. He boxes too much. That might be it, but
- 1:37:09on top of that, it's also the fact that, yeah,
- 1:37:12that's not what they come to see. I mean, that's
- 1:37:15crazy because he actually is a pretty tough guy.
- 1:37:18Like you see in his most recent fight where even
- 1:37:20he had the cut in his eye. And even when he had
- 1:37:23that absolutely wanted eye, he still like at
- 1:37:26the arena. To me, it looks like he was boxing
- 1:37:29good. He was getting out of the way. He was doing
- 1:37:30nice and he got the job done. That was it. You
- 1:37:34know, Pat Rafter arena around in Brisbane. And
- 1:37:36I went there and there weren't that many people
- 1:37:39there. It was actually a really empty arena.
- 1:37:42That's crazy. Yeah, people, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:37:46And this is his hometown. Like, you have to understand
- 1:37:49that, like, Liam Parra, he came out of Kooparoo
- 1:37:51Boxing Gym over in inner -city Brisbane. I walk
- 1:37:53past there all the time. And this fight was being
- 1:37:56held in Pat Rafter Arena, which is just west
- 1:37:59of it, over around the Tennyson area, I believe.
- 1:38:02Now... This is a city that's not even getting
- 1:38:07behind its own guy. And when I say its own guy,
- 1:38:09I'm talking about one of the best talents to
- 1:38:11come out of Australian boxing in quite some time.
- 1:38:14And he's a world champ. Exactly. That's fucking
- 1:38:18crazy. That's exactly it. He's not some nobody.
- 1:38:22He is a world champ. He is one of the most accomplished.
- 1:38:25And more people went to watch Nikita Zu versus
- 1:38:29Michael Zarafa. And that should tell you absolutely
- 1:38:32everything you need to know. because that's...
- 1:38:35And it's... Parra only just signed with No Limit
- 1:38:39as well, and that disappointed me so much. It'll
- 1:38:42be good for him in Australia, but they're not
- 1:38:46going to push him the same way they're going
- 1:38:48to push Tim Nikita. And that is something that
- 1:38:51upsets me, because Liam Parra, in my opinion,
- 1:38:54absolutely incredible fighter, at least in the
- 1:38:57context of Australian boxing, because... There's
- 1:39:01not many Australians that have that level of
- 1:39:04counter -punching acumen, head movement or footwork.
- 1:39:08And, you know, we're not going to get that. We're
- 1:39:12not going to get that again if we keep going
- 1:39:14about things at the pro level that we do. Because
- 1:39:17it's not a Boxing Australia problem. Boxing Australia
- 1:39:20have their own issues. But if you look at their
- 1:39:22curriculum on how they teach boxers, the way
- 1:39:24that I've been trained to box over the last couple
- 1:39:26of years. it's not like they're not telling you
- 1:39:29to just get in there and crawl you know it's
- 1:39:33just that that is what is going to get you money
- 1:39:36in this country so yeah disappointing it's something
- 1:39:41where i really wish that we would see a lot more
- 1:39:45initiative on the end of australian promoters
- 1:39:48to put on fighters like pyro and really give
- 1:39:52them a boost It's just not going to happen because
- 1:39:57it's not what the people want. They want to watch
- 1:40:00footy players. They don't want to watch actual
- 1:40:01boxing. Tara Moana's number 48. Just to let you
- 1:40:08know. Number 48? 48 in Australia. Yes. Fucking
- 1:40:13crazy. I understand. I understand that he might
- 1:40:20not have the deepest resume at a pro level, but...
- 1:40:26Neither up until last night, really, and even
- 1:40:29up to last night, neither does Nikita Zu to an
- 1:40:32extent, because Terry Moana, he's where he is
- 1:40:36by choice. He would be way higher in that list
- 1:40:40if he was with No Limit, because they would have
- 1:40:42him fighting a bunch of guys from Brisbane and
- 1:40:45from Sydney and whatnot. But the reality is that
- 1:40:48he is fighting on overseas and international
- 1:40:51cards because he is with Matchroom. So... Which
- 1:40:56is probably better for his career in the long
- 1:40:58run. Oh, a thousand percent. I mean, look, he
- 1:41:01could, I'm going to be honest. I think he, it
- 1:41:05would take him like a year and he would probably
- 1:41:07be able to sweep all of the Asia Pacific belts.
- 1:41:11I don't think any of those guys can actually
- 1:41:15handle him. You know, you look at the heavyweights
- 1:41:18that fought last night. How do you think Teramalana
- 1:41:20goes against those guys? I mean. Yeah. I think
- 1:41:25it's a foregone conclusion. We're talking about
- 1:41:27Terry Moana in Talmud, and you saw what Talmud
- 1:41:30did to McKean. So that's like, and no disrespect
- 1:41:34to McKean, great fighter, probably incredible
- 1:41:36dude too, but this is Terry Moana we're talking
- 1:41:38about. And he is not just a guy who is just a
- 1:41:42brawler. Terry Moana, he has come through the
- 1:41:44amateur system of Australia. They've prioritized
- 1:41:47his footwork and strength and conditioning so
- 1:41:49much. He's become so much fitter over the last
- 1:41:53year. and they've been having him gently go against
- 1:41:56a lot of these lower level fighters while he's
- 1:41:59been building this new physique and it's a good
- 1:42:03way to manage his career but yeah unfortunately
- 1:42:07means he won't kick on as much in australia as
- 1:42:09he probably should but i think that he yeah look
- 1:42:15australians will need to know him one way or
- 1:42:18another because he is one of the best we have
- 1:42:19right now Never seen a big armor like that. Goodness
- 1:42:25gracious. Yeah, he's going to be famous, famous.
- 1:42:30I'm sure of it. Oh, yeah. He's got the dance
- 1:42:34moves and everything. He's like... And you wait.
- 1:42:37Australia's going to claim him once he gets famous.
- 1:42:40Oh, yeah. No, they love him. They love big, powerful
- 1:42:43heavyweights. The problem is that if they're
- 1:42:47not constantly in front of people, they're not
- 1:42:49going to get... really they're not going to have
- 1:42:53that light shown on them and that's what they
- 1:42:55need for Terry Moana there needs to be that light
- 1:42:57shown on him and unfortunately it doesn't I don't
- 1:43:03think it's going to be a no limit thing where
- 1:43:05they do that for him because he's not he's not
- 1:43:08with them but he still does fight on these Australian
- 1:43:09cards so yeah we'll have to see how it goes I'm
- 1:43:14optimistic about some guys But there's other
- 1:43:19cases where I'm just like, man... Yeah. I just
- 1:43:25wish there was more support for guys like Pyro,
- 1:43:28Terry Moana, SugarNyx, who are boxers instead
- 1:43:33of all the ex -footy players that seem to be
- 1:43:36able to get all the money they want by just strolling
- 1:43:38into boxing. Nyx is number two for women's pound
- 1:43:46-for -pound in Australia. Who's number one? The
- 1:43:51princess. She should be ahead of Sky. She should
- 1:43:55be ahead of Sky. And I say that like I'm a big
- 1:43:59Sky Nicholson fan, but like the niece will fight
- 1:44:05anyone and everyone and so far every time she's
- 1:44:08delivered. I guess I can't complain too much,
- 1:44:13though. I forgot Skye Nicholson was Australian,
- 1:44:16to be honest. I thought they had ebony bridges
- 1:44:18above her. No. I was confused. That's outrageous.
- 1:44:31Yeah, that is very much how... Things are going
- 1:44:39with Australian boxing at the moment. I think
- 1:44:45that unless we as a country decide that we're
- 1:44:50going to start prioritizing guys who can box,
- 1:44:52that we're going to keep running into this. Yeah,
- 1:44:59it really is disappointing when a country doesn't
- 1:45:02get behind their guys. Yeah. It upsets me. supports
- 1:45:09anyone who decides to live in Canada for two
- 1:45:11weeks. Like, we jump all over that shit. Lennox
- 1:45:16Lewis lived here for years and fought for us
- 1:45:18in the Olympics. I was more thinking, like, Mbili
- 1:45:23and Betterbia. Oh, yeah, true. Oh, I forgot about
- 1:45:29Mbili being there. He's been there for a while
- 1:45:33now, but the day he arrived in Canada, they claimed
- 1:45:36him as a Canadian boxer. Yeah, that's true. But
- 1:45:47yeah, in that case, I think that's the time that
- 1:45:50I've got for today. But I want to say thank you
- 1:45:53so much for letting me onto the show, guys. It's
- 1:45:55really good to talk about that and hopefully
- 1:45:57it shines a bit more light into Australian boxing.
- 1:46:01Where it is at the moment, because I certainly
- 1:46:03think that if we just kept moving in the direction
- 1:46:07of Paro and Teramawana and getting behind them
- 1:46:10as a country, that we'd be fine. But hopefully
- 1:46:13this event makes people realize that. And especially
- 1:46:18Opitaya as well, but I think the Zupa news does
- 1:46:21change that a fair bit. Very disappointed. yeah
- 1:46:30look it's you got to get your money while you
- 1:46:33can and if it wasn't him it was going to be somebody
- 1:46:36else true or maybe it could have been nobody
- 1:46:42in an ideal world sure but unfortunately that's
- 1:46:48you know i know i know could happen in moments
- 1:46:54man anything could happen the moment you step
- 1:46:56inside a ring yeah at least he's getting in on
- 1:47:02the ground floor so he's getting paid well now
- 1:47:05exactly that's it the people that come off the
- 1:47:08end won't get those same deals but definitely
- 1:47:10not no but yeah thank you very much guys i appreciate
- 1:47:15it heaps and i'll see you next time all right

- 1:50:19We're going into the big weekend of boxing. Parting
- 1:50:23words. Parting words. I don't really have much.
- 1:50:31I hope the ring card actually delivers this time.
- 1:50:36Because they've been hit or miss. I hope it's
- 1:50:40a banger. I got a cheer for Beru. This no -name,
- 1:50:50random -ass German guy shows up to claim a title,
- 1:50:55and now he's being thrust into a unification
- 1:50:59fight with the expectation that it's going to
- 1:51:02be an easy one, an easy title to take. That's
- 1:51:07true. I would very much like Beru to prove him
- 1:51:10wrong. I would love if Beru pulls off the upset.
- 1:51:19William Skull, if you're having trouble sleeping,
- 1:51:22that should be fun. That should be fun for you.
- 1:51:26Adam Azeem versus Gustavo Lemos, not a bad fight.
- 1:51:30Adam Azeem continues to step up his competition,
- 1:51:34so that's fun. And Bokrum. Bokrum, Bokrum. Yeah,
- 1:51:47actually, it's a pretty decent weekend of boxing
- 1:51:50and closing out January strong. Yeah. I very
- 1:51:56much enjoy Pro Box kicking it off and them not
- 1:52:00understanding their lane and going for Friday
- 1:52:05instead of going on Saturday like they have done
- 1:52:09in the past. I miss Wednesday boxing. I do too.
- 1:52:14I really wish. I kind of understand why, but
- 1:52:18I really wish they would just go back to midweek
- 1:52:20boxing. But yeah, that card's going to be fun.
- 1:52:26Pro box is always fun, but I really like Suleiman
- 1:52:29Sagawa. I'm excited for the co -main. All right.
- 1:52:38That's going to do it for this edition of Boxing
- 1:52:41Before Dark. we'll see you on the other side
