- 0:00Acts chapter 10. Now there was a man at Caesarea
- 0:03named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian
- 0:06cohort, A devout man, and one who feared God with all his
- 0:09household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to
- 0:12God continually. About the ninth hour of the day
- 0:14he clearly saw in a vision an Angel of God who had just come
- 0:17in and said to him, Cornelius, in fixing his gaze on him and
- 0:21being much alarmed, he said, What is it, Lord?
- 0:23And he said to him, Your prayers and alms have ascended as a
- 0:26memorial before God. Now dispatch some men to Joppa
- 0:29and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter.
- 0:32He's staying with a Tanner named Simon whose house is by the sea.
- 0:35When the Angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned 2
- 0:38of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his
- 0:40personal attendants. And after he'd explained
- 0:43everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
- 0:45On the next day, as they were on their way in approaching the
- 0:47city, Peter went up on the housetop about the 6th hour to
- 0:50pray, but he became hungry and was desiring to eat.
- 0:53But while they were making preparations he fell into a
- 0:55trance, and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a
- 0:58great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground,
- 1:02and there were in it all kinds of four footed animals and
- 1:05crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.
- 1:08A voice came to him. Get up, Peter, kill and eat.
- 1:11But Peter said, by no means Lord, for I have never eaten
- 1:14anything unholy and unclean. Again a voice came to him a
- 1:17second time. What God has cleansed no longer
- 1:20consider unholy. This happened three times, and
- 1:23immediately the object was taken up into the sky.
- 1:26Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the
- 1:28vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been
- 1:31sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon's house,
- 1:34appeared at the gate, and calling out, they were asking
- 1:37whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there.
- 1:41While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the spirit said to
- 1:43him, Behold, three men are looking for you, but get up, go
- 1:47downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have
- 1:50sent them myself. Peter went down to the men and
- 1:53said, Behold, I am the one you were looking for, what is the
- 1:56reason for which you have come? They said, Cornelius Centurion,
- 1:59A righteous and God fearing man, well spoken of by the entire
- 2:02nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy Angel to sin,
- 2:05for you to come to his house and hear a message from you.
- 2:08So he invited them in and gave them lodging, and on the next
- 2:11day he got up and went away with them, and some of the brethren
- 2:13from Joppa accompanied him. On the following day he entered
- 2:16Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for
- 2:19them, and had called together his relatives and close friends.
- 2:22When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet and
- 2:25worshipped him. But Peter raised him up, saying,
- 2:27Stand up, I too am just a man. As he talked with him, he
- 2:31entered and found many people assembled, and he said to them,
- 2:33You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to
- 2:36associate with a foreigner or to visit him.
- 2:38And yet God has shown me that I shall not call any man unholy or
- 2:41unclean. This is why I came without even
- 2:44raising any objection when I was sent for.
- 2:46So I ask, for what reason you have sent for me?
- 2:49Cornelius said, Four days ago this hour I was praying in my
- 2:52house during the 9th hour, and behold, a man stood before me in
- 2:55shining garments, and he said, Cornelius, your prayer has been
- 2:58heard and your alms have been remembered before God.
- 3:01Therefore send to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called
- 3:04Peter to come to you. He is staying at the House of
- 3:06Simon the Tanner by the sea. So I sent for you immediately
- 3:09and you have been kind enough to come.
- 3:11Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all
- 3:14that you have been commanded by the Lord.
- 3:16Opening his mouth, Peter said, I most certainly understand now
- 3:20that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation
- 3:23the man who fears him and does what is right is welcome to him.
- 3:27The word which he sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace
- 3:29through Jesus Christ, He is Lord of all.
- 3:32You yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all
- 3:34Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John
- 3:38proclaimed. You know of Jesus of Nazareth,
- 3:41how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and
- 3:43how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed
- 3:46by the devil. For God was with him.
- 3:48We are witnesses of all the things He did, both in the land
- 3:51of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by
- 3:54hanging Him on a cross. God raised Him up on the third
- 3:57day and granted that He become visible not to all the people,
- 4:01but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to
- 4:04us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.
- 4:07And He ordered us to preach to the people and solemnly to
- 4:10testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as
- 4:14Judge of the living and the dead of Him.
- 4:17All the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone
- 4:20who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.
- 4:23While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit
- 4:26fell upon all those who were listening to the message.
- 4:28All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed
- 4:31because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on
- 4:34the Gentiles also, for they were hearing them speaking with
- 4:36tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, Surely no
- 4:41one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have
- 4:44received the Holy Spirit as we did.
- 4:45Can he? And he ordered them to be
- 4:47baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and they asked him to
- 4:50stay on for a few days.
