- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. As we enter the Gospel of John,
- 0:45it's important that we understand the purpose for which
- 0:47this gospel is written. Toward the end of the book, the
- 0:50human author John makes it extremely clear.
- 0:53Listen to John 20, verses 30 and 31.
- 0:56Therefore, many other signs Jesus also performed in the
- 0:59presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book,
- 1:02but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus
- 1:05is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have
- 1:09life in his name. In other words, John writes the
- 1:13book as a demonstration that Jesus is who he says he is, the
- 1:17Christ, the Son of God, and so that we the readers might
- 1:21believe in Jesus and have life in Him.
- 1:25Knowing that purpose of the book in its entirety, John chapter 1
- 1:28serves as an introduction before we get to the signs of Jesus,
- 1:32the demonstration or proof of who He is.
- 1:35The Holy Spirit through John is making it extremely clear to us
- 1:38exactly who this Jesus is. Just in this chapter we are told
- 1:43that Jesus is God himself, He is Creator, He is light and life.
- 1:47He is the Word made flesh, the one through whom sinful man can
- 1:51have the right to be called children of God.
- 1:54He is the Lamb of God, sent to take away the sins of the world.
- 1:58He is the Christ, the long-awaited Messiah, the
- 2:01Saviour. And from this chapter on we will
- 2:04see Jesus demonstrating, proving the reality of all these titles
- 2:08through His teaching, His miracles and ultimately His
- 2:11death and resurrection. The case will be made that Jesus
- 2:15is the Christ, the Son of God, and we will be invited and
- 2:19exhorted to believe on Him for eternal life.
- 2:22So hang on tight as we explore this chapter together.
- 2:25I want us to pause here in chapter 1 though to see one
- 2:28particular reality about Jesus. At the end of the chapter Jesus
- 2:31meets Nathaniel who becomes one of Jesus disciples.
- 2:35As Nathaniel approaches, Jesus speaks as though he knows him
- 2:39and when Nathaniel questions this, Jesus tells him that he
- 2:41saw him even before they met, though he was not there to see
- 2:45him. Nathaniel wonders at this
- 2:47demonstration of Jesus power and says, Rabbi, you are the Son of
- 2:51God, you are the king of Israel. This is a bold declaration for
- 2:55someone you've just met. Jesus answers Nathaniel and
- 2:58says, because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do
- 3:01you believe you will see greater things than these?
- 3:05And he said to him, truly, truly, I say to you, you will
- 3:07see the heavens open and the angels of God ascending and
- 3:10descending on the Son of man. Now what is Jesus saying here?
- 3:14Angels ascending and descending on the Son of man?
- 3:17What is that all about? You have to go back to the Old
- 3:20Testament to get your answer. Back in Genesis, when Jacob was
- 3:23on the run from his brother Esau, after stealing his
- 3:26birthright and blessing, he stopped to sleep at a place
- 3:29which would become known as Bethel.
- 3:32There he had a dream where he saw a ladder coming down from
- 3:35heaven to earth and angels ascending and descending the
- 3:38ladder. He called that place the gate of
- 3:41heaven where heaven and earth touched.
- 3:44So catch what Jesus is saying here, that ladder that connected
- 3:47heaven and earth, It's Jesus Himself.
- 3:51He is the bridge. He is Emmanuel, God with us.
- 3:55To put it another way, listen to First Timothy 2 verse 5.
- 3:58For there is one God and one mediator also between God and
- 4:02men, the man Christ Jesus. Jesus Christ is the mediator
- 4:07between God and man. He is bringing the Kingdom of
- 4:10heaven to earth, and He is making sinful man whole and
- 4:14worthy by His blood to enter the Kingdom of heaven.
- 4:18What a picture. And we're only in chapter 1.
- 4:21So remember today who it is that you serve.
- 4:24Remember that in Christ we have access to heaven itself and obey
- 4:29the command of this book. Believe on His name and
- 4:32experience the real life that He gives.
