- 1:21Speaker 1: there doing an inter of you in that building and
- 1:23Speaker 1: I didn't know using that doing the building. I just no, man,
- 1:25Speaker 1: Michael over here, the radio station over there. So welcome
- 1:28Speaker 1: to money Making Conversation. Thank you. I'm honored and humble
- 1:31Speaker 1: to be here. I like the word humble, honored and
- 1:33Speaker 1: the humble that means I'm doing something in life to
- 1:34Speaker 1: make you want to say those things. I'm honored to
- 1:37Speaker 1: have you on this show because you give information to
- 1:39Speaker 1: my guests and motivate them. Because what I've discovered is
- 1:43Speaker 1: that a lot of people always want me to mentor them,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you know, and this show is really a show about mentorship.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Because I can't I can't guide people. I can't sit down,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and there are a lot of people basically just need
- 1:55Speaker 1: to hear the story over and over again before they
- 1:57Speaker 1: get it and realize that's their story. What is your story,
- 2:00Speaker 1: miss Pittman, My story is one like a lot of
- 2:04Speaker 1: people starting. I started doing here at home. So that's
- 2:07Speaker 1: my story again. I started doing in here with a
- 2:10Speaker 1: ball hit man. That's always and it looks good. But
- 2:16Speaker 1: I started doing here in my parents bathroom in middle school.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And then I went from doing here to go into
- 2:21Speaker 1: cosmetology school, now technology school, aesthetics, massage, therapy, kinesiology, holistic
- 2:26Speaker 1: here care practitioner, and trichology school. So I've been in
- 2:30Speaker 1: the health and beauty industry for a long time. And
- 2:32Speaker 1: then I helped incorporate coaching into my business model, which
- 2:36Speaker 1: leads me to where I am today to show other
- 2:37Speaker 1: people how to incorporate coaching into their business model to
- 2:40Speaker 1: have another stream of income and have a passive stream
- 2:42Speaker 1: of income. So that's my history, starting from the bathroom.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Now I'm here. So it's always about the background. My
- 2:49Speaker 1: background uh interstrated kid uh, six sisters, two brothers. My
- 2:53Speaker 1: father was a truck driver, my mom had a high
- 2:55Speaker 1: school education first, more people that didn't have a visionist
- 2:59Speaker 1: beyond what raised kids and try to give them a
- 3:03Speaker 1: better life than what they had. Okay, here you are
- 3:06Speaker 1: see your father's here, which is fantastic when you have
- 3:08Speaker 1: a relationship with your with your father. My relationship with
- 3:11Speaker 1: my daughter, I just love. She's a she just saw
- 3:14Speaker 1: more college in college. So when you started doing this
- 3:17Speaker 1: hair in the bathroom, you know, you know, you're trying
- 3:19Speaker 1: up the bathroom and brother, I did. I'm the baby before.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You're trying up the bathroom with this half absolutely not
- 3:27Speaker 1: sharing any profits. Okay, so tell me about that little
- 3:30Speaker 1: moment there when they got to understanding that. Okay, well,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I started the bathroom and then my mom took me
- 3:39Speaker 1: to the kitchen. I graduated to the kitchen. You know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: back in the day used to have those ponytailers used
- 3:43Speaker 1: to put in the microwave, you know, So I learned
- 3:46Speaker 1: how to perfect that right before I get burned. So
- 3:48Speaker 1: that was my go to hairstyle. But then my mom
- 3:51Speaker 1: was like, okay, you need to get out of my
- 3:52Speaker 1: kitchen too, So then I started going to the people's
- 3:55Speaker 1: homes and then my dad didn't like that side of
- 3:58Speaker 1: It's like Okay, now you need to get in a
- 4:00Speaker 1: line because you don't know who's how she going. So
- 4:02Speaker 1: I did um and my parents was just like, if
- 4:05Speaker 1: you're gonna do it, ticket to the next leup. First
- 4:07Speaker 1: of all, my dad was like, you're doing hair like
- 4:09Speaker 1: what Like he wanted me to really pursue going to
- 4:12Speaker 1: college first, but he supported it. My mom was like,
- 4:14Speaker 1: if you're going to do you're not going to do
- 4:16Speaker 1: one kind of hair. You're gonna learn how to do
- 4:17Speaker 1: everyone's hair. You're going to be diverse and just don't
- 4:20Speaker 1: be the stereotypical hair scholars. So they pushed me, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: thankfully I got to see my mom. She's an entrepreneur,
- 4:26Speaker 1: she had a daycare. My dad worked on the railroad
- 4:28Speaker 1: and in Savannah that was like one of the job
- 4:31Speaker 1: for the black man to have. That was like the job.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So he dressed dressed, so you know, that's what I saw.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And in mediocrity was not celebrated in our house. So
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, we didn't get celebration for doing what was
- 4:48Speaker 1: expected of us. Now it's interesting because I look at
- 4:52Speaker 1: what you what you accomplished it Like my parents, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: my mom was just you know, do the brage and
- 4:57Speaker 1: then the hot ron and then I had all that
- 5:01Speaker 1: done in my hair. When I wanted to win, it
- 5:03Speaker 1: was flowing. You know, had the hot iron. Is that
- 5:06Speaker 1: what happened? Everything happened this head? I got the size
- 5:09Speaker 1: burnt out. You know that when you put that little
- 5:11Speaker 1: that that that peram on my half? Do stay all
- 5:15Speaker 1: syn you know you later stay on that long stuff
- 5:21Speaker 1: calmed down, It's gonna be all good. Mam My head
- 5:24Speaker 1: burned up a baby. You got to go through the bird.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Gotta go through the bird to get it right. So
- 5:28Speaker 1: I know that that that that that in the African
- 5:31Speaker 1: American community, home haf styling was something that a lot
- 5:35Speaker 1: of people did and then you, as a young person
- 5:38Speaker 1: turned it into a business. What clicked in your mind
- 5:41Speaker 1: that made you I could make this a business besides
- 5:44Speaker 1: just doing people favors. There wasn't an option. Like in
- 5:49Speaker 1: my house. It was because of my upbringing. It was like,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you're not just going to do it to do it?
- 5:53Speaker 1: What's your next move? What's you're gonna have a career?
- 5:55Speaker 1: Because you couldn't stay there, you know, and I didn't
- 5:59Speaker 1: see my mom hell or my dad failed. I had
- 6:01Speaker 1: my grandmother who was an entrepreneur. So I was pretty
- 6:03Speaker 1: much the third generation entrepreneur. So that's all I knew.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So with that being said, you eighteen, you're just starting
- 6:10Speaker 1: your business. Now, all people's did you have a business plan?
- 6:13Speaker 1: Did you? I'm asking a lot of crazy questions in
- 6:16Speaker 1: the but you did have your mom, she had to
- 6:18Speaker 1: daycare of your dad. He would have a stable job environment.
- 6:22Speaker 1: So he knew right and wrong. You know what he
- 6:24Speaker 1: knew for a fact, you wanna go You're gonna stop
- 6:26Speaker 1: going to these strange houses. He can't see through the wall.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He's gonna stop all that. So so tell me those
- 6:32Speaker 1: early stages of start establishing your business, getting into salon,
- 6:36Speaker 1: because I want people to hear these steps that lead that,
- 6:38Speaker 1: that led you to this conversation that we're having right now. Well,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I didn't have the business plan, person like the executive summary,
- 6:44Speaker 1: budget and all of that. But I knew that I
- 6:46Speaker 1: wanted to not in my in my city the average
- 6:50Speaker 1: income of twenty four dollars. I knew that was not
- 6:52Speaker 1: going to be my testimony. I didn't want that. And
- 6:54Speaker 1: even I'm talking about today's still in the twenties. So
- 6:57Speaker 1: I wanted to be something different. So I knew I
- 6:58Speaker 1: had to do something different, which puts me in the operation.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Gave me the opportunity to put myself in environments that
- 7:04Speaker 1: were more structured in the corporate salon, so I can
- 7:06Speaker 1: see how they did it. So once I learned how
- 7:08Speaker 1: they did it, I took what I learned and then
- 7:10Speaker 1: I applied it to myself and said, you know what,
- 7:12Speaker 1: if they can do it and succeed, I may be smaller.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I don't have all those assets, but I can do
- 7:17Speaker 1: that same principles and systems that they have. And that's
- 7:19Speaker 1: what I did, and that's what worked for me. Okay,
- 7:21Speaker 1: cool with that being said, I have a young brother
- 7:23Speaker 1: who's in d C Market. He had like four barbera
- 7:26Speaker 1: and beauty salon, which you know, he has the African
- 7:28Speaker 1: braiding salon. He has a barbershop and think he has
- 7:31Speaker 1: a a mix of beauty and barber you know, and
- 7:34Speaker 1: he and I'm so proud of it, you know, because
- 7:37Speaker 1: of the fact that you know, he believe he makes
- 7:39Speaker 1: his revenue through boots. Now, do well your salon owner
- 7:43Speaker 1: or you just a person who just started salon, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: just like you said, you used the word small, How
- 7:48Speaker 1: did how did your operation start? Up and how did
- 7:51Speaker 1: you consistently generate income? Was the one boot salon. I
- 7:54Speaker 1: had one sink, two dryers, and a sofa. But I
- 7:57Speaker 1: had a work ethics, so I would work. I didn't
- 7:59Speaker 1: have any children, I wasn't married, so I worked from
- 8:02Speaker 1: the sun up to some sundown. I will start making
- 8:04Speaker 1: relationships and cultivating relationships with the concierge at the hotels
- 8:08Speaker 1: and then getting on their preferred vendor list for their
- 8:10Speaker 1: weddings and the bridle hair. And then I started vending
- 8:13Speaker 1: at different places, and I just knew that I who
- 8:16Speaker 1: my target market was. I knew it wasn't the people
- 8:18Speaker 1: that couldn't afford what I wanted to ask. So I
- 8:20Speaker 1: started dressing apart example, look at you. You know, I
- 8:23Speaker 1: started putting myself even though I couldn't afford to go
- 8:25Speaker 1: to certain places. They didn't know that. I just showed
- 8:28Speaker 1: up and looked like I should be there. And then
- 8:30Speaker 1: I began to attract that kind of client. So my
- 8:32Speaker 1: ticket was higher than the average person that will go
- 8:34Speaker 1: in and get their services. And then I just expanded.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I went from one station to four stations. And that
- 8:42Speaker 1: one thing that's hard for people in the beat industry
- 8:44Speaker 1: doesn't matter how many boosts you have. I'm sure you
- 8:46Speaker 1: could talk to your brother and he'll tell you that
- 8:49Speaker 1: boosts are being full all the time. You know, because
- 8:52Speaker 1: people are in the industry, a lot of us are flaky.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Just you And I tell people build a business based
- 8:57Speaker 1: on your skill set, because somebody could walk out to arm,
- 9:00Speaker 1: but you still have your mortgage or your rent or
- 9:02Speaker 1: whatever that you have to pay. That's what I did.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I built it off of my skill set. O cool.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Now are you a natural hair person or you are
- 9:08Speaker 1: a perm what? What? What is your what? What is
- 9:10Speaker 1: your You say you do all hair. Well, I'm retired
- 9:13Speaker 1: from the beauty and down. But what's just saying? But
- 9:15Speaker 1: what do you push? Healthy hair, healthy health, healthy hair?
- 9:18Speaker 1: And what does that mean when you say healthy hair,
- 9:19Speaker 1: healthy hair? Making sure that you maintain the longevity of
- 9:22Speaker 1: your hair, not something that you just put on top
- 9:24Speaker 1: of your hair and do not take care of your hair,
- 9:26Speaker 1: your scalp, your skin. And that's why I went to
- 9:28Speaker 1: school for trichology because a lot of us were losing
- 9:30Speaker 1: our hair. So I went and did that. When we
- 9:32Speaker 1: come back, we're gonna get motivated by health and beauty.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But I mean Seria Pittman joined this compassy. You know
- 9:38Speaker 1: this not the last time you're on my show. Right absolutely,
- 9:40Speaker 1: Cook pointed to my man in the corner. We'll be
- 9:45Speaker 1: right back this Jean McDonald, I'm back with money making conversation.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Sitting next to me and Sereda Pittman. She's out of Savannah, Georgia,
- 9:54Speaker 1: health and beauty coaching. Absolutely. The great thing about when
- 9:59Speaker 1: you're talking to somebody who's face to face versus over
- 10:01Speaker 1: the phone, you get to see the visual, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: because a lot of people you could be a great
- 10:04Speaker 1: conversationist on the phone. But I love looking at people
- 10:07Speaker 1: because you get the truth because I really asked them questions.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The little stump, of course we're gonna ask me that
- 10:12Speaker 1: she's not one gave me that face. That's the face
- 10:16Speaker 1: that tells everything about So. So we talked about you
- 10:19Speaker 1: starting the ninteen. Now you're in the coaching business. Explain
- 10:23Speaker 1: exactly what explained to me exactly and my listener exactly
- 10:26Speaker 1: what this is all about. Coaches help people obtain their goals.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So if you come to me and you you have
- 10:31Speaker 1: a business and you say, hey, coach, I want to
- 10:33Speaker 1: do X, Y and Z in my business. I will
- 10:35Speaker 1: never tell you what to do. I won't tell you
- 10:37Speaker 1: what your success should look like. I would help you
- 10:39Speaker 1: find one to three actionable steps to help you get
- 10:42Speaker 1: across your finish line. Obtain your goals and make sure
- 10:45Speaker 1: that your goals are scalable, they're realistic. And really make
- 10:48Speaker 1: sure that you can maintain that success once you accomplish it. Okay,
- 10:52Speaker 1: you got the game playing down, you know, you got
- 10:55Speaker 1: all look at the right words, you know, like sometimes
- 10:57Speaker 1: I stumbled. The guys get the right But you've been
- 10:59Speaker 1: saying this of a long time. I have. So, So,
- 11:03Speaker 1: what is the biggest mistake that people make in trying
- 11:05Speaker 1: to be an entreprene hoour? What's the biggest mistake coming
- 11:08Speaker 1: from the coach? I'm gonna call you the coach. I
- 11:11Speaker 1: love it. That's that's what everybody calls I love it.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I love I'm about to get on the field. But seriously,
- 11:16Speaker 1: one thing that people do an entrepreneurship is trying to
- 11:18Speaker 1: take someone else's game plan and win with it. That
- 11:22Speaker 1: is what is wrong because you don't know their story,
- 11:24Speaker 1: you don't know how they got started. And I tell people,
- 11:26Speaker 1: don't copy and pay someone else's success because you don't
- 11:29Speaker 1: know what it took for them to get it, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: you definitely don't know what it takes for them to
- 11:32Speaker 1: maintain it. So create your own recipe for success. That
- 11:35Speaker 1: is what I tell people. And be who you are.
- 11:37Speaker 1: If you're building a personal brand, don't lie, don't be inauthentic,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and try to be something else. I can't be you.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I could try all day long, but I will fail.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And that's what people mess up with. And I totally
- 11:47Speaker 1: agree with that. A lot of people want to I
- 11:50Speaker 1: want to be the next this. No, no, you're not
- 11:52Speaker 1: gonna you know. It always annoyed me when people go,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I want to be next, open next, Steve Hall, Kevin Hall, huh, huh, huh.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Do you know of the story? Do you know the story?
- 12:01Speaker 1: The story has nothing thing to do with you. Nothing.
- 12:04Speaker 1: They probably they didn't even Steve was born in welsh Resh, Virginia.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Then he went to Cleveland, then with the Dallas, did
- 12:09Speaker 1: with the l A. Then he came back to Chicago
- 12:11Speaker 1: with New York that's the Atlanta. Then he went back
- 12:14Speaker 1: to Chicago, and then he went back to l A.
- 12:16Speaker 1: That's a journey. Okay you wanna be okay? Can you are?
- 12:20Speaker 1: You ready to do all that or have you done
- 12:22Speaker 1: all that to be him? And so so you you
- 12:25Speaker 1: have a philosophy when big, when big by being small,
- 12:28Speaker 1: when big by playing small, playing small? What does that mean?
- 12:31Speaker 1: Make small incremental changes into your business. A lot of
- 12:34Speaker 1: times we just say, oh, this is what I want
- 12:36Speaker 1: to do. This didn't work, I'm gonna change everything. I
- 12:38Speaker 1: teach a principle of doing any day. Audit all that
- 12:41Speaker 1: your processes, audit, plug in your holes, fix what you
- 12:43Speaker 1: can and do not go broke trying to get rich
- 12:46Speaker 1: when small by playing big, pick out a small target
- 12:49Speaker 1: audience that you want to connect with, figure out what
- 12:52Speaker 1: they like, figure out what they need, and give them
- 12:54Speaker 1: that in a way that you can manage and sustain.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Because we jump out there so good with all these ideas,
- 12:59Speaker 1: and X months down the line, we can't keep it
- 13:01Speaker 1: up right? How do you With that being said, because
- 13:04Speaker 1: I agree, I always tell people that you know when
- 13:08Speaker 1: you look at life, you know you go you go
- 13:09Speaker 1: to college, if you if you if your goal is
- 13:12Speaker 1: based on college, you can get frustrated because it's four years.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Especially going to any professional it could be eight years.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So short term goals semester of that test, exercise, set
- 13:23Speaker 1: some goals that you can reach and maintain. Initially, you
- 13:25Speaker 1: know relationships and that's important dropping baggage and baggage can
- 13:30Speaker 1: be a relationship. Baggage could be a job you have,
- 13:33Speaker 1: no no rhyme or reason that makes you happy? Why
- 13:36Speaker 1: you keep going to it? How do you launch a business? Then,
- 13:39Speaker 1: with that being said, with all this information you're giving
- 13:42Speaker 1: out as coach coach Pittman, Okay, rus Sean McDonald, I
- 13:45Speaker 1: have all these great ideas. People tell me or you're
- 13:48Speaker 1: gonna make money one day, and I was just gonna
- 13:51Speaker 1: throw out a business. Let's say I want to launch
- 13:54Speaker 1: a and it's not trying to hold you accountable, but
- 13:56Speaker 1: I want to launch me because people say I can
- 13:59Speaker 1: bait war winning baker. People always ask me, Roshan, I
- 14:02Speaker 1: know you're gonna open the restaurant. I know, well, what
- 14:05Speaker 1: how can I buy those cakes? Did you make those cheesecakes?
- 14:08Speaker 1: They killer? I want to? I want to. I want
- 14:10Speaker 1: to open a cheesecake business. How why would I launch that? What? What? What? What?
- 14:15Speaker 1: What would be the mistakes I would make? Because right now,
- 14:17Speaker 1: being driven by my friends absolutely absolutely telling me I
- 14:22Speaker 1: should do this, Nobody, nobody, from baker hadn't told me
- 14:26Speaker 1: about alone. I don't know about the manufacturer. I'm gonna
- 14:29Speaker 1: mask produce these things. What how would I launch that?
- 14:32Speaker 1: I would say what I teaches? Ranking it? What can
- 14:35Speaker 1: you do right now with what you have? So you
- 14:37Speaker 1: have all these great ideas, right rank them for the
- 14:40Speaker 1: number three? Number three is something and I could do
- 14:42Speaker 1: right now with what I have. So if I'm a
- 14:43Speaker 1: great baker, besides my friends, who else knows that I'm
- 14:46Speaker 1: a great baker? So you can build start building relationships.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Go to car dealerships, go to restaurants, give them your
- 14:51Speaker 1: stuff for free. People don't like doing that, but go ahead,
- 14:54Speaker 1: and the people that I could get some testimonial. Is
- 14:56Speaker 1: that way you can build up some testimonies. Create your
- 14:58Speaker 1: Facebook page, put your pictures like your cakes, make them
- 15:01Speaker 1: look pretty. And then as you start doing that, hand
- 15:03Speaker 1: your cards out and start small because you jump out there.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Figure your cost, Okay, this is how much it's going

- 18:19Speaker 1: relationships or are we staying the same thing peer group relationship? Well.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I also do a subject teaching subject matter teacher called
- 18:27Speaker 1: the power of the peer. We don't understand that if
- 18:29Speaker 1: we are the smartest person in the room, it is
- 18:32Speaker 1: only profitable if you're paying everyone else to be there.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So many times we do not put ourselves in environments
- 18:37Speaker 1: that we can become sharpened and become smarter. So I
- 18:40Speaker 1: tell people, if you don't want to win, hang out
- 18:42Speaker 1: with people that are at your same level. Put yourself
- 18:45Speaker 1: in an environment that's going to stretch you, that's going
- 18:47Speaker 1: to help you be better. And that's what I teach.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I don't ever just want to be the smartest person
- 18:51Speaker 1: in the room again, unless everybody is coming there to
- 18:53Speaker 1: hear me. But I put myself in an environment that
- 18:55Speaker 1: forces me to stay humble. It keeps me real, it
- 18:58Speaker 1: keeps me relatable, and I know that I'm not the
- 19:00Speaker 1: only person that knows everything. Well. I agree with that,
- 19:03Speaker 1: you know, I know that I have to. I've only
- 19:06Speaker 1: gotten better by surrounding myself with more and more people
- 19:10Speaker 1: who are critical Omia questioned me, you know they're kind
- 19:13Speaker 1: of tented to saying that because you know Sean McDonald.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I have to tell him, tell me if it's not right.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I almost have to demand that information from them because
- 19:21Speaker 1: of the fact that if you keep thinking that you
- 19:23Speaker 1: know your cool aides best kool aid, then you're gonna
- 19:26Speaker 1: keep drinking. It might be a little better. Absolutely, but
- 19:28Speaker 1: people afraid to tell you a bit, oh that's good,
- 19:30Speaker 1: then throw it in the trash and walk out the
- 19:32Speaker 1: back door. That's the worst cooler, the avitation of my life.
- 19:34Speaker 1: That's what people fail in so many ways. Now you've
- 19:37Speaker 1: been you, you're you're the coach. Give out. We can
