Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / Winning 50 Mile Kilkenny Ridge Race 2024
Transcript
- 0:00OK, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain Peaks.
- 0:03Today we're going to tap off my major race stories.
- 0:10I've told a bunch of them on the podcast so far, and I think the
- 0:13only big race that I haven't kind of given my thoughts on and
- 0:17talk through the whole thing has been the Kilkeny Ridge race 50
- 0:20Miller that I ran in 2024. So I end up winning that race,
- 0:25had a good run on that on that course.
- 0:28And I'll go through that whole kind of there was a couple
- 0:32things before the event and then during it.
- 0:35It went really, really well, but there are a handful of of kind
- 0:39of mistakes that I made during that race.
- 0:42So I'll talk through some of the things that I would have done
- 0:44different what happened and just go through that full story.
- 0:48So we got that on deck today. And then hopefully, I mean,
- 0:52those are the, those are my, I think I've told all the big
- 0:54stories. So now we're getting closer to
- 0:57the trail season this year and I got a bunch of things I want to
- 1:00do. So the stories from me in the in
- 1:04the future coming are all they have, but not been written yet.
- 1:08We'll say that. So there's a lot of things that
- 1:11I want to get out on this year, a lot of race efforts that I'm
- 1:14starting to line up. Hopefully everything goes well.
- 1:17So excited about it. But this will be the last old
- 1:20story that we're bringing out as far as big races for me.
- 1:23And then we're going to talk about the marathon.
- 1:26Sports buying six O 3 trail races so that's.
- 1:32Sunnipiece Scramble, Ragged Mountain, 50K stage race, the
- 1:36Loon Mountain race, all these races they just got bought out,
- 1:41I would, I would assume for a good amount of money.
- 1:43And they're revamping the races. So we got a lot of or not
- 1:46revamping, but putting some big money on it.
- 1:49So I got some thoughts on that. We'll talk through that.
- 1:52We'll go through the Lincoln Woods Trail shutdown that's
- 1:56going on this year. It's shut down right now and
- 1:59then it's going to shut down for most of the summer, so we'll go
- 2:02through that. Going to do a little Olympics
- 2:06recap. I mean, I'm sure everyone's been
- 2:08dabbling a little bit in the Olympic Games.
- 2:10Every four years is the perfect intervals for a lot of these
- 2:15sports to be like, wow, that I kind of forgot this is a sport.
- 2:19So we'll do some Olympics reactions.
- 2:22The Black Canyons 100100K just took place this last weekend. 2
- 2:27course records, new course records, that race was crazy.
- 2:32How many people came out for that race?
- 2:33So we'll go through that quickly.
- 2:35No Barkley finishers this year probably won't dive into that,
- 2:39but there's the Barkley update and then we're going to go
- 2:44through one virtual race that's going on right now in February
- 2:50and that'll be that'll be it for today.
- 2:52So a handful of things got a lot to cover and we'll just dive
- 2:56into it, of course, before the 62nd quick training tip.
- 3:03So this week's training tip is going to be how to do speed
- 3:07intervals depending on your muscle typology.
- 3:10So fast switch and slow twitch athletes, people have heard a
- 3:16lot about that. But if you're a slow twitch
- 3:18athlete, you usually have maybe like a bigger engine, you can go
- 3:21forever, but maybe not that finishing Sprint speed.
- 3:24And then a fast twitch athlete would be more jumps, really high
- 3:28spins, sprints really fast, but builds up a lot of lactate and
- 3:32doesn't have as much as an have an engine to go longer.
- 3:36And this is right out of the Scott Johnson training for the
- 3:39uphill athlete. If you are a fast, more of a
- 3:41fast twitch muscle fiber athlete, you should be doing
- 3:45shorter intervals. So 2 minutes or less in that
- 3:48zone, 4 plus intensity range because you're more prone to
- 3:55build up lactate and so you get more out of a workout, basically
- 3:59building it up quickly and then just doing more reps in that
- 4:02range before your muscle just shutting down.
- 4:04And then for slow twitch athletes, if you consider
- 4:07yourself more of a slow twitch athlete, you should doing doing
- 4:10longer intervals because it takes a little bit longer for
- 4:13the lactate to build up. You don't have as much
- 4:15production, but you can also clear it faster.
- 4:17So you want to do longer intervals.
- 4:19So that's the tip for today. It's from the training for the
- 4:23uphill athletes. So I mean, that book should be
- 4:25like most mountain runners Bible and and there you have it.
- 4:29If you have any questions, go to runmountainpeaks.com.
- 4:32You can shoot me a little question in in one of the boxes
- 4:36on that website or you can just e-mail me and the emails on
- 4:39there too. So that's the tip for today.
- 4:42But OK, we'll jump right into the Kilkenny Ridge Race. 50
- 4:46Miller. So this isn't out and back on
- 4:50the Kilkeny Ridge race. Oh, we got some traffic.
- 4:53We got some traffic. Sometimes I just try to muscle
- 4:56through these segments when people are like coming on or
- 4:58it's about to get awkward, but sometimes I can't.
- 5:01So we're just going to smile and wave.
- 5:06No way from this guy. He just gave me a head knob.
- 5:09He had those big vapor glasses. OK.
- 5:12We're going to get right into the Kilkeny Ridge race, 50
- 5:15Miller. So as a lot of you guys probably
- 5:18know, this is an out and back. So the Kilkeny Ridge race has a
- 5:2225 KA, 25 mile, which is just one way traverse of the Kilkeny
- 5:26Ridge range. And then the out and back would
- 5:29be the 50 Miller. The stats, it's not quite 50
- 5:32miles. Usually in the whites efforts
- 5:36are longer than you know you have.
- 5:38So whatever. Some of the races go longer than
- 5:42you say because the trails are just long.
- 5:45And if you know you can only permit a certain section and
- 5:47trail, if it's close to 50, you call it 50.
- 5:49But this trail is about I think the official distance.
- 5:52If you look at a bunch of people's watches and it all
- 5:54varies on how fast you do it, but I think it's 46 miles and
- 5:59about 16,000 feet of climbing, maybe a touch less of climbing,
- 6:04but it's a good race and the terrain.
- 6:08So it's in the it's in the it's up north.
- 6:11It's not as much in the A it's doesn't the AT doesn't go
- 6:15through it. It's not super popular like the
- 6:18Pemi or the presidential area. It doesn't get as much traffic
- 6:21as those areas. So it's fairly quiet.
- 6:24You get 24000 footers cabin womb back, which obviously get hiked
- 6:27a bunch, but in between those peaks don't see a ton of action.
- 6:31And the trails are actually very runnable and pretty nice
- 6:35actually. So it's not as steep or as rocky
- 6:38as you typically get in the whites.
- 6:40It's a lot of lower incline runnable.
- 6:44You know, it's Rudy a little rocky, but it's not that seeps,
- 6:47you know, a roaded trails that you usually get.
- 6:50So it's a it's a good race. I.
- 6:52Think. In terms of the terrain, it's
- 6:55it's faster, it's easier. You do have some easier miles.
- 6:58It's not as steep or technical, but it is remote, which I think
- 7:03adds a little bit of slows you down as far as like times, how
- 7:07fast these times are one just because water.
- 7:10So if you don't have a bunch of water, there's not many places
- 7:13to fill it up. So you have to like go to the
- 7:14age stations. So you have to carry more stuff
- 7:17and that that Ridge can get so overgrown.
- 7:22So in the summer it's horrible. I think nobody likes going back
- 7:26there. It's very quiet.
- 7:28I think I did one training training run on that on that
- 7:31route and I saw like one person the whole day.
- 7:34I did like 2020 or 25 miles. I only saw one person.
- 7:38So it's very remote and it's super overgrown.
- 7:41So you feel like that stuff, it's cool.
- 7:42But you know, if you like to see where your feet are stepping or
- 7:46running, it's not as cool. There's lots of blow down.
- 7:50So I think 2 winters ago there it was a really bad winter.
- 7:54We had a ton of blow downs and so there were a ton of you know,
- 7:56logs over the trail. So it's just that sense slow.
- 8:00It's not as Prezi technical slow as it is just remote slow.
- 8:07But I think it is a faster course.
- 8:09So and you don't have a ton of big climb.
- 8:11So you have one big climb as you go up to Cabot and then one big
- 8:15climb as you go up to womb back to two 4000 footers.
- 8:18But in between like the Weeks Mount Terrace, I think it's
- 8:22called, it's all like, you know, less than 1000 foot up and down
- 8:26undulating, which I think is, you know, it doesn't take as
- 8:29much out of your legs as as some races do.
- 8:32So, but it's a good race. It's remote.
- 8:34I mean, it's definitely one of the gnarlier 50 Millers in the
- 8:37Northeast, maybe the country. So it's a good race and there's
- 8:41been a lot of people that came out and done it.
- 8:44So going into that race I was in pretty good shape.
- 8:48I came off of Hellbender in May. I didn't have any injuries out
- 8:52after Hellbender got back into training pretty smooth.
- 8:55I think I had a fairly busy summer.
- 8:58I don't think I did any other huge efforts.
- 9:00I did some like moderate efforts, you know, not race
- 9:03efforts or FKT stuff, but just longer days that summer.
- 9:07And then this was the race I was doing in the fall of the Kilkeny
- 9:09Ridge race. So I think it's mid-september
- 9:12each year and going into it was not injured, was pretty fit,
- 9:19like as fit as I had been and my training was pretty good.
- 9:23So I was finally getting up in volume.
- 9:26I was probably like before that Kilkeny Ridge race was probably
- 9:29the first time that I was consistently did a block where I
- 9:32did like 40 to 45 or 50 miles a week.
- 9:35Like I would assume that that my last block was around 4550 miles
- 9:38a week, which is really good for me.
- 9:40I mean, that's a lot of vert. I couldn't tell you how much
- 9:43time that took. Like I was probably 10 to 15
- 9:45hours somewhere in there. So it was a good, it was a good
- 9:49training block and I was feeling really good going into the race,
- 9:52going into it. I really usually I have a
- 9:54spreadsheet of how fast I want to do everything, but didn't
- 9:56have that. I just was like, I'm going to
- 9:59go, I want to compete. Initially there were a couple I
- 10:02forget it was on the list. I know Larissa Danis McFadden
- 10:05was on the list and she's a slugger.
- 10:07I mean, she's a, she's just a New England crusher, ultra
- 10:12runner crusher. I think she podiumed at Western
- 10:14States back in the day. So that can tell you everything
- 10:16you need to know about Larissa. But it was her.
- 10:20And there's someone else big in the race, I forget, but they
- 10:22both end up dropping out. Oh, it was Patrick Callahan.
- 10:26Patrick Callahan was in the race too.
- 10:28So there were a couple, you know, really, really strong
- 10:30people. And there are other strong
- 10:32people in the race too that ended up racing.
- 10:33But there are a couple people. I knew I hadn't done the race
- 10:36before. I'd done the Jigger Johnson 50.
- 10:37So I was excited for it, feeling good going into it.
- 10:40And actually one story that I'm remembering now about Patrick,
- 10:44he had messaged me. I ran into him one time that
- 10:47summer. So we ran together and then he
- 10:49had messaged me maybe. Three weeks before the race, he
- 10:52said. He was signed up and he said,
- 10:54yeah, I, I just found out I have a fracture in my, in my ankle.
- 10:59And but I think I should be good, you know, I should be good
- 11:02for the race in, in three weeks. And I remember just being like,
- 11:06what I think it wasn't, I don't think he had a fall like a bad
- 11:10break like that, but I think it was maybe like a stress reaction
- 11:14that it turned into a fracture or something.
- 11:15He was having an ankle and he was convinced that it was fine.
- 11:19He was just going to wrap it up and run it.
- 11:21And I remember thinking. I don't know if I'm tough enough
- 11:25to. I don't know if I'm tough enough
- 11:26to compete with some of these guys.
- 11:28These guys running on a broken ankle.
- 11:30I mean, just running out on it for something is one thing, but
- 11:33planning a race which I don't know.
- 11:35But he's a study, he's a beast and he always, you know, goes
- 11:38for big things. So did he didn't end up making,
- 11:42I don't know what happened. I don't know if I had talked to
- 11:43him before, but he didn't end up racing.
- 11:45But anyway, going into that race was feeling good.
- 11:48The one hiccup before the race which had happened was the
- 11:52weekend before I was in southern Maine.
- 11:56I was I was in in the woods off trail stuff.
- 12:01And I got a tick and it was one of those little tiny ticks.
- 12:06And I didn't realize the tick. And two or three days later, so
- 12:10the Tuesday before the race, Monday or Tuesday before the
- 12:14race, I'm like shower or whatever, and I see this little
- 12:17tick on my ankle and it had been there for over 2 days, all
- 12:21right, 'cause I known where it came from and I just didn't do a
- 12:24good tick trick or whatever. And I had a tick.
- 12:27It was enlarged. The thing was red.
- 12:29It was super small. It was like one of those tiny
- 12:30ones. But I got bit by a tick and I
- 12:33remember thinking, shoot, I probably need to go and get the,
- 12:39the antibiotics or whatever that you're supposed to get when you
- 12:41get bit by a tick. And I don't like taking, you
- 12:46know, medications. I always like very, I want to
- 12:49know about it before I take something.
- 12:51So antibiotics, I mean, everyone knows what antibiotics are, but
- 12:55they kill all of your bacteria. And for me, I'm thinking, one,
- 13:01it can upset your stomach for a couple days and two, it's going
- 13:05to kill all of my gut bacteria. And so for the layman, they may
- 13:09just say, like, you know, who cares?
- 13:11Whatever, just get over it, take it, whatever.
- 13:13But for me, I'm like, I've worked so hard training my gut,
- 13:17eating food on runs. I know what works for me.
- 13:20Is this going to mess it up Four days before race taking, taking
- 13:24antibiotics And I almost didn't take it, but I was like, all
- 13:27right, no, you know, you don't want, if you did want like get
- 13:30Lyme disease, you don't want to like ruin your running career,
- 13:32whatever. So I'm like, no, it's just take
- 13:34it and, and you'll deal with it. Because I, I remember looking at
- 13:37the stat, I was like, all right, well, how many?
- 13:39I don't know. I've never had.
- 13:40I've, I've had ticks on me a bunch.
- 13:41I've got bit a couple times. You pick them off, it's fine.
- 13:44But I've never dove into the what's Lyme disease.
- 13:48So I remember I was like, how many ticks have Lyme disease in
- 13:51Maine? And I looked it up and it was
- 13:53like 50%. I was like, oh gosh, OK.
- 13:55I thought it was like if it was a 10% or 15%, I would have just
- 13:59rolled the dice probably. But I was like, all right, now I
- 14:02don't want Lyme disease. So I got the shot.
- 14:05I remember my stomach was upset for a couple days and I was kind
- 14:07of like, but I've I've never had like a major stomach issues,
- 14:11knock on wood so. I was like, I think it'll.
- 14:16Be fine going into the race, my stomach didn't hurt going into
- 14:19it so it ended up being fine. And during the race, I think
- 14:23towards the end, it was a hot day and I don't think I was
- 14:26eating as much as I wanted to, but I don't really think it had
- 14:28affected me at all. So I think it all ended up being
- 14:32good. But that was one thing.
- 14:33I was like, oh man. And I didn't, I think I told my
- 14:36maybe my parents, but I didn't tell anyone I didn't want to
- 14:38like make it a thing or I would just wanted to kind of ignore
- 14:41it, pretend everything was good and just go and run.
- 14:43So but yeah, I took, I ran that race on a full course of
- 14:46antibiotics that the week of which I would not suggest for
- 14:50like anyone tapering or anything just because it's going to throw
- 14:52your body out of whack. But luckily I didn't ruin things
- 14:56catastrophically for me, for me. So that was the one, the one
- 15:01thing before the race. And I think in a one sense
- 15:05you're like, how, why did this happen?
- 15:07Now I've never got bit by a tick.
- 15:08I've never had to say these antibiotics.
- 15:10But in another sense, I do think that there are so many
- 15:12controllables in life, whatever you're trying to do that you
- 15:16can't actually control. And it's like, all right, next
- 15:19time I have a race, I'm doing tick checks before.
- 15:21Like it sounds kind of stupid and silly, but there's so many
- 15:24things that you can do to like, all right, make sure this
- 15:26doesn't happen. So it was a learning lesson.
- 15:29I'm not going to do crazy bushwhack, always going to check
- 15:31for ticks before races and just in general, it's good practice.
- 15:36That was one thing I learned before the race.
- 15:38But so the race starts, it's a very, very early race.
- 15:43You start at 5:00 AM and at the beginning of the race I had
- 15:46known a few of the people in it was doing some, you know,
- 15:49ultrasound of snooping couple guys from Canada who were pretty
- 15:52strong. And so I kind of had a.
- 15:54Good feel for the race. And my plan going into it was to
- 15:58get to the top of Cabot, which is about 9 miles in and they
- 16:03just stay with whoever was running there up until Cabot and
- 16:06then Cabot on the descent, try to come drop whoever was there
- 16:11and then just kind of go the rest of the day.
- 16:12That was kind of the plan because I want to pace it good.
- 16:16I'm like I, I always say I'm a little, I'm more confident my
- 16:19downhill than my uphill. So that was the plan for the
- 16:22day. So we start in the dark.
- 16:23And I think. Six of us took off at a pretty
- 16:26good pace. You know what, like most races
- 16:28and just taking off, it wasn't anything crazy, but it was, you
- 16:31know, it was faster. So like, all right, this is a
- 16:33good group going out. And the first thing I remember
- 16:36from that race, the first few miles are very runnable.
- 16:39It's a lower grade so it's pretty runnable.
- 16:42So I think. A few of us were running.
- 16:45I was probably mixing a little bit of power hiking in between
- 16:47people that were running just 'cause it was a little clip of a
- 16:50grade. But the first big thing I
- 16:53remember from that race was it's up north.
- 16:56Lots of moose up there. And we heard maybe a mile or two
- 16:59in, you're near South Pond, a lot of moose around.
- 17:02We heard this big thing through the woods just crashing off to
- 17:04our left. And just from experience, I know
- 17:07that's pretty much going to be a moose.
- 17:10Bears are a lot quieter. Nothing else really sounds that
- 17:13big. I mean, it sounded like a truck
- 17:15going through the woods. So it's probably just a moose.
- 17:17And it's during kind of the running season, which is the
- 17:20only time where moose get a little dicey.
- 17:22And so I'm running. And I remember being, you know,
- 17:25we're hearing this moose. And it didn't just go away.
- 17:27It felt like it was running with us for, I don't know, 50, 70, a
- 17:33100 yards, almost like it, it felt like it was following us
- 17:36for a while. And in my head, because we were
- 17:38talking about it in my head, I was like I was in a like third.
- 17:42There were two people ahead of me and maybe two or three people
- 17:44behind me and I was thinking I'm in the perfect spot right now.
- 17:48Moose jumps out in front of us, sees us on the trails, mad at
- 17:50us. I got 2 body Shields in front of
- 17:53me. I leap around those two as the
- 17:55moose gets them and go and I'm in first.
- 17:57Moose comes behind, they get the two people.
- 18:00And I get I. Have time to maneuver around.
- 18:03Maybe I try to, you know, I don't know, pony up, you know,
- 18:05jump into second place and get, you know, so I got three people
- 18:08behind me, but I got time and I'm thinking.
- 18:12If if it just. Lines up we're we're running
- 18:15pretty fast and the moose comes out and just hits the middle of
- 18:17the pack. Just me out of nowhere.
- 18:19It's like, alright, good game you got me.
- 18:21Hats off to you. But I felt pretty comfortable
- 18:25safe from the moose. But eventually the moose walked
- 18:27off and or ran off and it was fine.
- 18:29So that was that was one thing I did remember.
- 18:32And then after that I remember I was talking a bunch with the two
- 18:36guys from Canada and they just had a bunch of cool stories.
- 18:40Sounds like they had done some trail races stuff around them
- 18:43that were pretty big and so we we were kind of talking a lot.
- 18:47And I had. Remembered that this guy made a
- 18:49comment and I don't know if this played any part into my psyche,
- 18:54but this guy behind us is one of the younger guys in the race.
- 18:57I talked to him for a while, I forget his name.
- 18:58I haven't looked at the list recently, but he we were talking
- 19:03with me and the Canadians and he said like we were talking just
- 19:06kind of talking a lot. And the guy was like, I don't
- 19:09know if someone said like, oh, sorry, we're talking like, or
- 19:11whatever. And he he just said something
- 19:12like, no, I actually, I actually love it.
- 19:14It's kind of like I'm just listening to a podcast.
- 19:16So maybe that was my first official podcast with those two
- 19:19guys. Maybe I have to have those guys
- 19:21on eventually if I ever see him again.
- 19:23Vincent and Sam were their names.
- 19:26I forgot their last names, but if you go on the list, you'll
- 19:28find them. We had all chatted at the end of
- 19:30the race and they were they were, they were cool guys.
- 19:32But yeah, so that that was another thing I remember on the
- 19:35way up. And then as you get to the first
- 19:38aid station, it's before the Cabot.
- 19:41It's maybe 6 or 7 miles in. It's near Unknown Pond.
- 19:45That's where the first aid station is.
- 19:48We get there and we're all in a pack, the six of us.
- 19:51And I roll in, I fill my bottle like I just need, I knew what I
- 19:54needed. I got one thing and I went out
- 19:56there and everyone else kind of was being a little bit or I
- 19:59don't know, I think I was just first in line at the water
- 20:01bottle thing and they were just maybe taking a little extra
- 20:03time. So, like, all right, Nice.
- 20:05So I'm just going to go and I was in a race.
- 20:07I wasn't like trying to, but I, I mean, I was in a race.
- 20:10So I went and I figured they would catch up like I was going
- 20:12to I'm dropping these guys. But I go and I'm, I'm feeling
- 20:15good and I don't see anyone behind me and I'm thinking, oh,
- 20:18wow, that's kind of crazy. And so I started going a little
- 20:22bit easier almost to let them catch up.
- 20:24Like I was like, I don't need to go fast.
- 20:25I'm just going to go kind of chill.
- 20:26So I was going leisurely and then, you know, 5 minutes in up
- 20:30in front of me, I see like a a bright yellow shirt.
- 20:33I'm thinking what the heck? And I'm getting closer and the
- 20:36guys running the same direction as me.
- 20:37I'm like, wow, this like this hiker, like what is the this
- 20:41hiker is doing a unknown pawn to Cabot Loop and it just timed it
- 20:46perfectly where I caught up to him.
- 20:47That's kind of weird. And then I get up to to him and
- 20:50he's in the race. So I didn't even see this guy
- 20:54pass me. I thought I was in first and he
- 20:56was actually in first. I was thinking, Oh, thank God I
- 20:58caught up to him because you know, who knows what would have
- 21:00happened if I just hung back and thought I was in first the whole
- 21:03day or whatever. So caught up to him and I was
- 21:06like, all right, well, that's fine.
- 21:07Like I'm glad I saw him and I'll just get up.
- 21:09Just, you know, same plane get the cab at first.
- 21:12So followed up and that was Sam Locke.
- 21:14He's from Goss Town too, actually, and strong runner and
- 21:18he was running some of the uphills at that point.
- 21:19I was thinking like, oh, this guy's strong.
- 21:20Like all right, this is this is pretty good.
- 21:22This is going to be a good little good race.
- 21:24So get up to Cabot and kind of like as planned, actually waited
- 21:28till we got off the summit of Cabot to the little cabin.
- 21:31I had said to him, and I don't know if this was disrespectful,
- 21:35but I said to him, like, oh, you mind if I jump past for this
- 21:37dissent? And I think he kind of pulled
- 21:39over and I actually don't remember if he said anything.
- 21:41That's maybe why I was like, oh, was that was that mean to say?
- 21:43Because I was running with him and talking with him.
- 21:46But. He pulled over.
- 21:48I I went and I, I pretty much just kind of yet I dropped him
- 21:53and I don't know how fast I wasn't like looking back, but I
- 21:55dropped him and I figured that I would because I was going a
- 21:57little bit faster on the descent.
- 21:58But I always think back, remember, like, I don't know, is
- 22:00that disrespectful to ask like, hello, Sir, can I pass you?
- 22:04Because it was kind of like a, it was, it wasn't like I can
- 22:07get, it was like a tight single track and like if I had room to
- 22:12get around him, I would have just done it.
- 22:14But I just figured we've been running for a little bit.
- 22:16We've been talking like I think I said something about our youth
- 22:19guy from Goffstown. I live there too.
- 22:21So we're chatting like felt like we were so much friendly.
- 22:24And so I thought it was fine to ask, but I don't know if that's
- 22:28fine to ask. It's a 50 mile race is a long
- 22:30distance race. Like I don't know.
- 22:31So, but I did and he was nice enough to pull over and I went
- 22:34by him and yeah, at that point I pretty much dropped him at the
- 22:39end of the Cabot climb. Then as you start going over to
- 22:42like the weeks, or I think the first climb is Terrace Mountain,
- 22:46I, I in my head, like I said, the uphills, I'm always working
- 22:50a little hard on the uphills, feel better about the downhills.
- 22:52So on the uphill, I was thinking, all right, it would be
- 22:54nice if I can get up the uphill alone.
- 22:57And then on the downhill I'll just be making up time.
- 22:59Like that's how I kind of felt about it.
- 23:01And so I was like working decently hard.
- 23:03There was an aid station before that climb, so I think I had
- 23:07heard him like I could still heard cheering when he came in
- 23:10behind me. So I knew he was relatively
- 23:11close before the climb, but that was kind of the goal for the
- 23:15climb. Went up and I never saw him.
- 23:18Went down and I was like all right, feeling pretty good.
- 23:21And I was feeling pretty good overall.
- 23:22And honestly over terrace and kind of like the rest of that
- 23:26underlying Ridge, I was just alone.
- 23:29No one caught up, didn't hear anything.
- 23:31It was kind of just to myself. I was feeling pretty good and
- 23:33things were going fairly smooth. It was a hotter day, very dry
- 23:38that summer, that 2024 summer, so dry, which was good.
- 23:42The trails were dry, but there was no water really to to get so
- 23:46you. I was carrying a little more
- 23:47water and it was pretty hot out, but feeling good and honestly,
- 23:52no really things to report on in that middle section.
- 23:55I mean, I didn't see any moose. I didn't see any people.
- 23:57It was fairly good, like easy day like or, or just like a
- 24:01regular day in the mountains. So nothing really that I can
- 24:03remember that stood out. But at some point in the day, I
- 24:07think the 25 mileage start at 7:00 or 8:00.
- 24:10So at some point in the day I started seeing those guys come
- 24:12up. I think it's 7, so I don't know
- 24:14where I saw them, but it was somewhere around the weeks where
- 24:17I started seeing people and that was kind of like a nice boost.
- 24:20It's cool to see people on a mountain back.
- 24:22We probably have the same amount of energy.
- 24:24It wasn't like I'm at the end of the race and they're super
- 24:26energetic, so I didn't really need an uplifting spirit.
- 24:29But it was cool to see people and you know, you see some of
- 24:31the top runners and whatever so did that was running.
- 24:36It's it. It is.
- 24:36Kind of funny to like, I don't know how many people were in
- 24:38that race, but you know, once you.
- 24:40Pass the 1st. Maybe 10 or 20 people or I don't
- 24:43know, maybe 10 that are kind of like, I don't want to say more
- 24:47aware, but probably more in the, in the trail running space, more
- 24:51aware of all the details and everything.
- 24:54Kind of towards the back of the Packers.
- 24:56Some people, a lot of people were asking like, Oh, are you,
- 24:58why are you? Why are you going this way?
- 25:00Like I was in the race that they were in, but I had turned
- 25:03around, which I thought was just kind of funny.
- 25:05I don't know, I guess I, I don't know the whole shuttling, like
- 25:08where they had to meet or whatever, but I don't know.
- 25:10And also when you're in a race, maybe your brain just a little
- 25:12mush, but I remember. A couple of people would said
- 25:14that. I just thought that was kind of
- 25:15curious. I remember I saw a couple people
- 25:17that I knew, so it's cool, you know, cool to see them say hi
- 25:21quick and then kept moving. And the weeks that is like the
- 25:28pinnacle of the weeds and the blow downs.
- 25:31I think before the race they usually do a little bit of trail
- 25:34work. So the trails are the best they
- 25:35are. All year right before the
- 25:38Kilkeny Ridge race. So anything big or like easy to
- 25:41clip is pretty good. But in that section it is just
- 25:44kind of up and down. You're in the middle of nowhere
- 25:46getting tired. Those are like hard.
- 25:48Mountains, I will. I will say it's a it's a cool
- 25:50vibe out there. It's very backwoods, ferny,
- 25:53moosey, that's how it looks. So it's a cool little area if
- 25:56you haven't got out on it, but that went fairly smooth.
- 26:01The only thing that happened on that section is I I hit my head
- 26:05really hard on some sort of branch or thing that was
- 26:07overhead that I guess was in there pretty good and I chipped
- 26:10my tooth a little bit. On that race, I remember like my
- 26:13neck really hurt at first. I was like, did I?
- 26:15Is my neck OK? Yeah, I think I'm good.
- 26:16I can feel and everything. And so that.
- 26:19Had happened, which was it was just a tiny little chip but I
- 26:22remember that hurting be like OK wake up.
- 26:24I always hit my head like. I'm I'm a little bit taller 61
- 26:28so and I think my awareness outside of where I'm focused on
- 26:32maybe is lower is I don't know if I had like a Madden, Madden
- 26:36rating my periphery peripheral awareness is probably.
- 26:42Like a 65 because I hit my head a lot basically and the woods,
- 26:46especially in the winter when you have that snow pack in the
- 26:48whites. I'm just getting hit in the Dome
- 26:49all the time. But that would the chip the
- 26:52tooth and then got up to Mount Wombach Wombach down to the the
- 26:58highway there, which is like the turn around point, the halfway
- 27:01point. It would I was really I was out
- 27:03of water. I was really hot and I was, I
- 27:06was just like I. Need water.
- 27:07I'm I'm it's very hot out. It wasn't super hot, but it was
- 27:10definitely mid to high seventies probably humid for September.
- 27:14It's like hot harder than it was that it had been and I was
- 27:18really feeling it. So going down there I was kind
- 27:21of like, all right, I need to get to the safe station and so
- 27:25far the the race had gone pretty much perfect.
- 27:28I think I, I did the, you know, did the plant up the cabin, took
- 27:31it easy up there and then started working a little bit
- 27:33harder, nutrition, everything was eating, drinking enough, was
- 27:36feeling pretty good. I wanted, I was aiming for
- 27:40probably roughly 11 hours, so I was thinking like 530 out 530
- 27:43back and I think I did the the traverse in 530 or 535.
- 27:48So it's like up to halfway perfect, which is how a lot of
- 27:52ultras go. This is the first half of an
- 27:55ultra is not the test of how fast you can run guys.
- 27:58It is the second-half. So this is where things a few
- 28:01mistakes happen. Not not big, but I felt like
- 28:03they were big or something that I like to try to just be.
- 28:06Cleaner on next time I get down there.
- 28:10I had a drop bag at the halfway section and I had an ice bandana
- 28:14and I know that these guys have ice.
- 28:16I was going to get it wet, going to get ice.
- 28:18Could cool off and it was going to be awesome.
- 28:20I've used ice bandana before. I really like it.
- 28:22And somehow in my drop bag in the morning, pulling stuff out,
- 28:26putting stuff in a last minute switch, I took the ice bandana
- 28:29out. So I'm like, Oh my gosh.
- 28:31And I was really big on like the cooling kick.
- 28:33Like this is where like in Western states you start seeing
- 28:35everyone doing the every, everyone's on the cooling.
- 28:38And so I'm really trying to do it and I'm asking like, do you
- 28:42guys have like AT shirt or something?
- 28:43I put ice in like I ran. An ice bandana.
- 28:45And luckily one of the ACH volunteers did so they gave me
- 28:49AT shirt and wrapped ice in and I was like.
- 28:51Thank you like so much. This is awesome.
- 28:54So I get my stuff. It was kind of like a little bit
- 28:56probably a couple minutes there, but I get the ice band in a
- 28:59shirt going up. I have this big shirt with ice
- 29:02in it on the back of my neck. I'm going up Mount Wombach, the
- 29:05last big climb. And then you really can start
- 29:07pushing, pushing up, pushing down.
- 29:09And I cannot feel a drip of this water or ice getting to me.
- 29:13It's basically just, it's such a big T-shirt.
- 29:17It's all getting absorbed. It wasn't working.
- 29:20And then I start realizing some of the ice is falling out 'cause
- 29:23we were just trying to makeshift a little thing right there.
- 29:25And it's the shirts like starting to get damp, but ice is
- 29:29falling out and it's like it's not even worth it.
- 29:31And so now I'm climbing up while I'm back.
- 29:34I was supposed to be doing fat all this stuff and I had a
- 29:39waterlog, a warm waterlogged big T-shirt that I just had to carry
- 29:45the rest of the way, which doesn't sound like a big deal,
- 29:47but one water weighs a lot like the ice finally melted at least
- 29:51a little bit where it wasn't helping me, but it was weighing
- 29:53in the shirt and I have this shirt and I.
- 29:56Told the guy I would give it back to.
- 29:57Him and so many times I was just thinking just Chuck the the bad
- 30:04devil on my shoulder was like just Chuck the shirt, get it,
- 30:07you know, find it later, get you know, you won't see this guy at
- 30:10the end. But I was like, no, that's
- 30:11wrong. He helped me out.
- 30:13You don't want to, you know, dip.
- 30:14It and then who knows what I can get get it again.
- 30:17So I didn't throw it. I packed it on my pack and on my
- 30:20pack has this extra thing that I didn't need waterlogged wasn't
- 30:23helping me and on top of all that, I'm I'm hot like I didn't
- 30:27get any of the benefits of the cooling.
- 30:29So that was one thing. How much did it prevent me?
- 30:32I don't know. Is it a couple minutes?
- 30:34Is it 51015? If you say, who knows what it
- 30:37is, But it's, it's these races you have to execute perfectly.
- 30:41You have to be extremely fit. And that's what I'm really
- 30:44chasing after. Like I'm trying to be the best
- 30:46that I can and run all of my runs the best that I can.
- 30:50And this is just something I messed up and like learning for
- 30:53later. So the nice thing, the second
- 30:56thing at the halfway point, I did have polls.
- 30:58So I had some lucky polls that I used.
- 31:01I'm not a huge pole person. I don't use poles at all
- 31:04anymore. Like in training I didn't use it
- 31:06on the lodge to dodge, which is 72 miles 28,000 feet avert.
- 31:10I always said getting into ultra running, the longer it is, the
- 31:13more vert you have in the whites, the more you know, the
- 31:16more I was apartment to use them.
- 31:17But as I've gotten a little bit longer in the sport, I don't
- 31:23know. I just don't seem like they help
- 31:25me. They definitely take weight off
- 31:28of your legs, which I understand, you know, you're
- 31:30saving your legs for later in races, long races, but the force
- 31:35that you're using in your arms cost your body more oxygen and
- 31:40and energy than it would if you just did it through your legs.
- 31:43Because your arms are smaller, muscles have to work harder to
- 31:46use the same force, and then you're carrying extra weight.
- 31:50So when I use poles, it for sure feels like I'm going slower and
- 31:53my heart rate's probably a little bit higher, but it saves
- 31:56the legs. So it's like a, you know, if you
- 31:58if you think your legs are strong enough and they won't
- 32:00give out at the last couple. Climbs, then don't use.
- 32:02Poles, but if they didn't, they will they probably would help.
- 32:05So there's a fine line. I think a lot of the stuff in
- 32:07the whites, they probably do help and the longer you go, the
- 32:10the more they do help. But for me, I would not run that
- 32:13again with with poles. I think I would just get my legs
- 32:15stronger and and more ready for the race.
- 32:18So that was the other thing. And then honestly, the way back,
- 32:22pretty uneventful. Like I said, I was alone.
- 32:25I had never seen anyone at the halfway point going up Wambach,
- 32:28I saw 23456. You know, people started coming
- 32:32in and I remember that they were closer than I thought they would
- 32:35be. Then I thought they would
- 32:37because I was going pretty fast. And you know, who knows?
- 32:39I didn't know what people's goals or whatever was, but it's
- 32:43always. Yeah, there's, you know, in race
- 32:46there's always people right behind it.
- 32:47That's just you kind of think about even if I haven't seen
- 32:49anyone in so long, there's people around you.
- 32:52So I always remember like, all right, like this is not this
- 32:54race. Is this is a race though.
- 32:56You got to go. But yeah, once I got to Wombat I
- 32:59again, I was, I was, I was like, all right, I'm going to start
- 33:02pushing, especially in the down. So the rest of it was
- 33:04uneventful. So low, you know, all the 20
- 33:08fivers are are gone. So it's just me again.
- 33:11Dry, hot, and I think this is when the food stopped going down
- 33:14as good, but nothing like crazy like that.
- 33:18I can that I can note, you know, a year and a half later.
- 33:23But yeah, that was that. I think the weeks were super
- 33:27annoying. I just think they go slower than
- 33:30you always think that they will. So they were just still super
- 33:32annoying on the way back, which is fine.
- 33:34And then you don't getting getting close to the Cabot.
- 33:37You start feeling like, all right, you know, we're getting
- 33:39there. And the final climb up to Cabot,
- 33:42I was really trying to push. I think I remember in the back
- 33:44of my head, I don't know if I was looking at times, but.
- 33:47The course record on this route was 10. 50.
- 33:49Eight, I think maybe, or I don't know if these, but Peter Howe
- 33:52just went under 11 hours, who was like in old school, kind of
- 33:56off the grid crusher. I don't know how much he runs a
- 33:59race anymore, but he's done. He he's just, yeah, he's a
- 34:02crusher very fast. And then Zach McCarthy had the
- 34:04best time, the second best time on the route.
- 34:07And I remember Zach's time up Cabot was pretty good.
- 34:11So I was like, all right, once I got to that, I was like, I need
- 34:13to start. Pushing a little bit so I did
- 34:15and I don't think I got close to his time, to be honest.
- 34:17I was using the poles. I remember it felt fine, but
- 34:19it's just I, I, it was a hotter day.
- 34:24I think the yeah, it was it, it just, I wasn't going fast enough
- 34:27to, I just wasn't fast enough. Basically.
- 34:29It was what it was. So I had a good effort, but it
- 34:31wasn't like I had known when I got to the top of cabin.
- 34:34I'm probably not close to the course record, but you know,
- 34:37whatever. Coming down cabinet I I think
- 34:40was fairly uneventful and then coming down, I think it's the
- 34:43bulge basically. Yeah, there was a handful of
- 34:48people, a group just hiking. And there was a big.
- 34:50Log across the thing. And so me, these people and the
- 34:54log all come at the same time. I basically slow down to let
- 34:57them by because I don't even think they know I'm going to
- 34:58race. And I roll my ankle like
- 35:01classic, I've been running the whole time and I go to stop and
- 35:04I roll my ankle, rolled it pretty good.
- 35:07So this is the last like big thing that I kind of messed up
- 35:10and I am I, I don't know how far I was away, but maybe 7 miles
- 35:14left, 6 miles left. And I, I mean, I was in first
- 35:17place. I was moving really well and I
- 35:18was thinking not like this, not like this.
- 35:23And it really hurt like it was a good role.
- 35:25It wasn't like, you know, so that I couldn't walk off, but I
- 35:29it definitely was like limping had limp walked it off for a
- 35:32while for probably a quarter mile.
- 35:35I couldn't even run. I was just kind of limping it
- 35:37off and thinking, come on, you idiot, you were moving.
- 35:39So, well, you're going so fast. You were get you were definitely
- 35:42in the 11 hour range and you freaking rolled your ankle.
- 35:46So that was like a mistake. I would not roll your ankle in
- 35:49races. That's probably a good hack for
- 35:51you guys out there. Yeah, that should be a 62nd tip
- 35:54that it will be a 62nd tip one day.
- 35:56Don't roll your ankle during a race.
- 35:58Boom if you have any questions. Go to runmountaingeeks.com.
- 36:01Like what? So yeah, that happened.
- 36:06Eventually I started running again and I think.
- 36:10I, I got moving and getting good and I'm like, OK, I can finish
- 36:13this out. Like, you know, once you get the
- 36:14blood flow and you don't want to stop and get locked up, you want
- 36:17to keep it going, like keep walking on, do whatever you can
- 36:19so you can kind of get by and eventually it stops hurting as
- 36:22much. And I was starting to run again.
- 36:25So I probably lost, you know, 5/10/15 minutes or whatever,
- 36:28which my mistake. This is not like I should have
- 36:31rent. I should have done this time
- 36:32there. Like I made all these mistakes
- 36:34going into the race and during the race, which I want to clean
- 36:37up for next time and. So at the aid station, I stopped
- 36:43the last aid station, 6 miles left and I stopped for a little
- 36:46bit and within a minute my ankle locked up again and I had to do
- 36:48kind of a limp out after that. And I was.
- 36:49Thinking Oh my gosh. But finally it, it felt pretty
- 36:53good. The last couple little climbs, I
- 36:55was just being a bit like I, I ran it pretty good, but I, I
- 36:58wasn't being a baby as much. I was just tired.
- 37:01I think my legs were tired. I was getting close to, you
- 37:04know, it was a good. Run for me and.
- 37:08I was going a little bit slower on the on the descents or on the
- 37:10ascents. And then the last descent
- 37:13actually started catching up to some of the 25 milers, which I
- 37:16was like, I wasn't even doing the math, like I didn't know how
- 37:19long, whatever, but started catching up to a few of those
- 37:22and I started running hard at the end.
- 37:23Like I finished that race out hard.
- 37:26I looked actually today and I I went out like 8103830830 on like
- 37:30a decent, not a decent like. You know.
- 37:33White Mountain terrain, I don't know, a semi slope might you
- 37:37know, moderate grade White Mountain terrain, which is
- 37:39pretty good to go to, you know, sub 10 minute pace at the end of
- 37:43a 50 Miller. And in the last two miles I was
- 37:47really pushing like I was pushing myself.
- 37:49It hurt and I was getting close, you know, a lot of myself.
- 37:53I shouldn't say the most the best of myself, but I was
- 37:56pushing pretty hard. And I remember at one point
- 37:57like, oh, I must be run at six. This is going to be a 630 mile.
- 38:01Like I am Killian Jornay, Jim Walmsley out here.
- 38:04I'm flying right down this mountain and my watch clicks
- 38:088:30. And you're kind of like, all
- 38:09right, that puts things into perspective.
- 38:11Feels like I'm 5K right now. And but yeah, last mile 2 was an
- 38:16830 and I remember getting to the end and these races, like
- 38:20I've experienced this a lot at the end of these ultras, like
- 38:23sometimes there's not a lot of people if it's at night, all
- 38:25these things. But I guess to the end, I think
- 38:2725 milers were coming in and I get to the end.
- 38:31I don't think you will realize that I was the 1st place
- 38:34finisher. Like I, I don't think, I think
- 38:37I, I sprinted in and I was going so hard.
- 38:39That was the first time that I ended in the ultra sprinting
- 38:41through the finish line. And maybe I just wasn't paying
- 38:44attention, but I don't think everyone had known that I had
- 38:47just finished the 50 mile, which was, which was cool, but I
- 38:50hoofed it and at the end I just kind of like dropped to my knee.
- 38:53I was like, I was very much like I felt sick.
- 38:57I, I, you know, I left it all out there, which was good.
- 38:59It was like a good finish. Ended it in 11-40 something
- 39:0311:42 maybe which was the 4th fastest time on that course and
- 39:09I was only 6 seconds behind Ben Nephew's third fastest.
- 39:13So it's Peter Howe, Zach McCarthy, both around 11 hours
- 39:16and then 11:40 was the next best time.
- 39:18So it was a great time. I was very happy with the
- 39:21effort. All in all, I think it went
- 39:23well. Like every old she had some
- 39:25mistakes that I that I want to clean up for next time.
- 39:27But it went very well and I was I was happy with with the
- 39:30effort. I was like if I had.
- 39:32Known that the third fastest time I could have gone 6 seconds
- 39:35faster probably, but. Obviously like, you know, it's
- 39:37also like, who cares? Like you ain't first, you last,
- 39:40you didn't get the course record, you last.
- 39:43So, you know, whatever. But yeah.
- 39:45And then at the end of the race, I remember Nick and Jackie were
- 39:49like, hey, you want like this or you want this and that?
- 39:51I just need you. OK.
- 39:53I was like, I think I just. Need a minute?
- 39:55So I took a little minute to myself and I walked down to the
- 39:58South pond because it was like it was still.
- 40:01It was the. Evening, so it was light out,
- 40:03nice pond, lots of food, good vibes, probably a fire.
- 40:06People did the whole 9 and I was just kind of like trying to come
- 40:10too. And this one older lady who had
- 40:13finished the 25 mile, I forget her name, I don't even know if
- 40:15I'd known her name, but she had a kind of like a chair set up.
- 40:19In the water? Is that how it happened?
- 40:21Maybe. Or maybe I pulled so much or
- 40:22whatever, But she was like, do you want to sit here?
- 40:26Because she could kind of tell that I was.
- 40:27So I kind of sat down and was just like putting my feet in the
- 40:29water, like trying to just recoup.
- 40:31She was like, do you? And she was eating something,
- 40:35maybe like some sort of bar or something.
- 40:37And. And I think she was like, and
- 40:38then maybe I was looking at it in a certain sense.
- 40:41And her motherly instincts kicked in essentially because
- 40:43she was a little bit older, but she still crushed 25 Miller.
- 40:46She's like, do you want this? And I was like, yeah, can I have
- 40:49that? Yeah, get out of that.
- 40:50And then I think she brought me a cup of like some sort of juice
- 40:53or something. They're very sweet of her, very
- 40:54kind. Of her.
- 40:55But I was really I was. Useless at the end of that.
- 40:58I just had to take a. Little minute.
- 41:00So that's how that race ended. And the other thing from the end
- 41:04of that race that I remember was those Canadians, they finished.
- 41:07So the next I think Sam came in 2nd 1310 maybe.
- 41:12So like an almost an hour and a half behind me.
- 41:15So I was there for a while just kind of hanging out, recouping.
- 41:18I was driving myself home. So I don't know.
- 41:19I was just kind of hanging out, I guess.
- 41:21Eventually they came in and. It was like 2-3, four were all
- 41:26really right in a row. And then two of those guys were
- 41:29the Canadians and they had a couple of people in the 25
- 41:32Miller race that they all came down like had an Airbnb kind of
- 41:36for the race. And so they were all kind of
- 41:38hanging out and I kind of got in their circle somehow.
- 41:40Like I was in a chair and I kind of was chatting them up a little
- 41:42bit and we were talking, you know, just kind of like shooting
- 41:46the shit a little bit, telling different stories.
- 41:48And once in a while these guys would go into to French because
- 41:53they were obviously French Canadian, I would assume.
- 41:56So they would, you know, we'd be talking emotionally English and
- 41:58they would, they would say something in French since, you
- 41:59know, sometimes they would laugh and I, I, they definitely were
- 42:02not like making jokes at me. I mean, maybe I maybe they were,
- 42:05who knows, Like very, I could, that is very plausible, but I
- 42:08don't think they weren't it not in a mean way.
- 42:10Like they were very fun, nice people.
- 42:12And but at one, one of the times they had told a joke or
- 42:15something or a story and I was just like, Hey, man, I kind of
- 42:17want to know what you got. What are you guys laughing at?
- 42:20And I think they had told me or whatever I would, if I could
- 42:23learn a second language, it would be French.
- 42:25I don't know if my brain will do it.
- 42:27Maybe I'll learn French one day. That maybe, who knows?
- 42:31But so that was a race. That was a Kilkeny Ridge race.
- 42:34I ended up driving myself home that night, which was kind of a
- 42:37grind, but it was just one of the short, you know, it's a
- 42:40shorter, you know, like super crush from it.
- 42:43But that was that was pretty much the race.
- 42:45And so, yeah, it it went pretty good.
- 42:48It was kind of uneventful. So to make some funny things in
- 42:51there, but nothing like Super mega learned about the
- 42:54antibiotics, learned about kind of the ticks, learned about some
- 42:57things on course. But All in all, it was a super
- 43:00good race. I really liked it and I have
- 43:02some unfinished business there for sure.
- 43:05So I think, I think I had mentioned this, but the Kilkenny
- 43:0950 and the Jigger Johnson 50I do want to do again.
- 43:12And because I had done those when I was more getting into it,
- 43:15so I feel like I'm more fit now and you know, have more to give
- 43:18it. Both of those races for sure.
- 43:20So this year I have a wedding conflict with the Jigger
- 43:24Johnson, I believe, or maybe the wedding the weekend before.
- 43:27I have a long wedding weekend, so can't do the Jigger Johnson,
- 43:30but the Kilkenny 50 maybe what I'm going to do this year is one
- 43:33of the races. So could be doing that this
- 43:35year. I looked at the sign up list.
- 43:38It doesn't look like they're super booked right now.
- 43:40But those the White Mountain endurance races have been
- 43:42booking up pretty quick, so who knows, I may have to jump on
- 43:47that sooner rather than later. But yeah, that's that was the.
- 43:52Kilkeny Ridge race 50 mile story.
- 43:55So hope you guys enjoyed it. If yeah, I think yeah, I think
- 44:00yeah. If you haven't heard any mother
- 44:02other race stories that I did the hell banner did the Jigger
- 44:05Johnsons. I did a few other ones, so they
- 44:08are in the list of episodes if you didn't hear those ones, but
- 44:11we'll just jump into the next topic outside of the the race
- 44:14stuff. We'll go through some of the
- 44:15stuff fairly quickly. But the one big one I do want to
- 44:19talk about is marathon sports buys the six O 3 trail races.
- 44:24So I mentioned this at the beginning, basically the six O 3
- 44:28trail races. Tom Hooper.
- 44:29You've been putting these on for a while, so the Sun of Peace
- 44:32Scramble, the Ragged Mountain 50K and Stage race, Loon
- 44:36Mountain Race, Kim's IT, Cliff Run, Vulcan's Fury Race, and the
- 44:42Cranmore Mountain Race. All of these are now owned by
- 44:44Marathon Sports. I don't know much about Marathon
- 44:47Sports, but it sounds like it's a bigger company.
- 44:50They're going to put kind of more.
- 44:51Publicity on it, the whole thing not it's not getting
- 44:54corporatized kind of thing which we're going to talk about, but
- 44:58they just got bought out. I don't know sometimes that that
- 45:00just happens when you have a company.
- 45:02So I think the first thing I want to talk about is there is
- 45:05money on these races now, guys big.
- 45:08Money so. In prize purses, we'll go in
- 45:11order. Sun and Peace scramble $30,000
- 45:14ragged State ragged 50 K $30,000.
- 45:18In prize money, the stage race $5000, Loon Mountain race
- 45:22$20,000, Kimsic Cliff Run $20,000.
- 45:26Yokin Fury and Cranmore both have 7500 on them.
- 45:30So I want to add there's a few things to talk about this.
- 45:34I think some people in the trail world and on a big on a much
- 45:39bigger scale, it's kind of the UT MB Whistler thing or like
- 45:45Iron Man taking over all the triathlons.
- 45:47You get to a certain stage in the in, in sports where bigger
- 45:51companies come in, there's just they're putting more money on
- 45:53races, more sponsors, they commercialize it more, they're
- 45:56trying to sell you more things, but they broadcast it.
- 45:58It gets more pros out and sometimes it gets to a point
- 46:02where it gets almost too much. I don't think we're we're there
- 46:05at all, but there are some people who dislike even the
- 46:09movement in that direction towards kind of commercializing
- 46:13more and more of these people, making all corporate whatever.
- 46:17And I think I agree with those people.
- 46:21Now there's other people that want all eyes, like the
- 46:24Northeast doesn't get enough action.
- 46:25Like we we need all eyes on us. We need this is awesome racing.
- 46:28We need more of this. You know, maybe they're more of
- 46:31racing people as opposed to some of the FKT or solo kind of stuff
- 46:35list stuff. And so there's a little bit of
- 46:38divide. I don't know, like the reaction
- 46:40of of people. If some people are upset about
- 46:43this, I don't know if that people would be because it
- 46:44doesn't. I just don't see any reason to
- 46:48except in the grand scheme of things like is this sport going
- 46:51to what is this sport? Going to get to.
- 46:52But I think that's more like a UT MB level because the UTMB is
- 46:56getting so many races and definitely not what we're
- 46:58looking at here. But I think it's awesome.
- 47:00And maybe I shouldn't start out with that, but sometimes my
- 47:03brain just doesn't go in a good order and you guys just have to
- 47:05deal with how I say it. So.
- 47:08But I think it's great. I think one prize money on these
- 47:12races is going to bring more people out, which is awesome.
- 47:16Bring more people into the Northeast.
- 47:18If you think you're one of the best runners in the Northeast at
- 47:21any of these races, go out there and race it and you're going to
- 47:24get some money. So it's going to bring pros out,
- 47:27it's going to bring elite athletes out.
- 47:28It's going to bring more time, better times, more competition.
- 47:32So I think that is great. I am in, I want to compete and I
- 47:36think I've, I've said this in different episodes, I haven't
- 47:39erased a ton, but the goal is I want to complete compete at the
- 47:43highest level I can. And so I love seeing this.
- 47:46And not only does it bring money on the table, like if you win,
- 47:49you get money, it also brings eyes.
- 47:52So I'm sure that marathon sports is going to try to start
- 47:56obviously kind of selling you some stuff, but getting
- 47:59sponsors. And so bringing sponsors for
- 48:01these races, more coverage, more social media, more live stream.
- 48:04We're talking about the stories. Everyone knows the Northeast
- 48:08doesn't get as much visibility as some of the West Coast, the
- 48:12big, the bigger other stuff. But this is a step in the
- 48:14reduction to getting more spotlight here.
- 48:17There's money on it. There's going to be more people,
- 48:19more advertising, more, you know, now there's incentive for
- 48:22marathon sports to bump up, boost all these races.
- 48:25So I think it's awesome. I think, like I said, more
- 48:27competition is the best. I was, I was caught talking to
- 48:30John Hirsch about this. A lot of sports start out as you
- 48:34know, a handful of passionate people in a in a ran, you know,
- 48:39in a small unknown sport like that was what triathlon.
- 48:42And as it grows, as more people find it and love it and push it,
- 48:47you kind of grow and grow and grow and it goes down kind of a
- 48:49ladder of more visibility and more people trying to make money
- 48:52off races and corporates. And like Ironman or like these
- 48:56big corporations, maybe Spartan and OCRUT MB, some of these
- 49:01corporations are owned by like equity firms that are they their
- 49:06their goal for their shareholder holders is to make money.
- 49:10And so it's a little bit of a slippery slope in that
- 49:13direction, but I think for any. Sport to grow, that is just the
- 49:17the way that it has to go. Because if it just stays small
- 49:21and unknown, you're always going to have people be like, we do
- 49:23the coolest stuff. We don't get any praise for it.
- 49:26Well, if you want the praise, if you want the spotlight, some of
- 49:29that stuff comes with it. But also big opportunities for a
- 49:33lot of people. Lots of trail runners are making
- 49:35good money now. Like the single track did a good
- 49:38episode about how much trail runners are getting paid now.
- 49:41Sponsorship. There's money coming in the
- 49:43sport. There's popularity in the sport.
- 49:46And I think the Northeast deserves $100,000 worth of prize
- 49:51money every year for these races, guys.
- 49:53So it'll be cool. Hopefully there's more coverage.
- 49:56I think it'll all go smooth. I don't know if Tom Hooper still
- 49:58the race director, I probably think he is, but but that I
- 50:01think that's awesome. And I think it's just going to
- 50:04boost, boost Northeast trail scene up.
- 50:06So keep an eye out for those races.
- 50:08We'll definitely be covering these races.
- 50:09Are we going to run any of these races?
- 50:11Maybe not this year, but we may run, maybe we will, who knows?
- 50:16Next up, I want to talk about the Lincoln Woods shut down.
- 50:20So if you hadn't heard, Lincoln Woods just had a bunch of trail
- 50:23damage and they just shut it down this winter for a little
- 50:27while until they're done with the winter trail work.
- 50:30And then it's going to get open back up again, I believe.
- 50:32And then sometime in June, it's going to be shut through
- 50:35November. And Lincoln Woods, it's one of
- 50:38the most accessible trails, like Lincoln is one of the most
- 50:42accessible areas. If you, if you're coming up in
- 50:4493, it's the closest there. There's lots of stuff nearby.
- 50:48It's a very popular trail. And obviously the iconic Pemi
- 50:51Loop. This is going to displace a lot
- 50:53of people in their plans this summer.
- 50:57I don't know what they're going to do as far as like trails.
- 50:59Around like the Lincolnwood trailhead.
- 51:01Are people just going to start going to Kerrigan via, you know,
- 51:04I don't know how many people are going to use and what section of
- 51:07the Lincolnwood Trail. Like maybe you still be able to
- 51:09go up to Flumacio. I haven't looked at it that
- 51:11detail, but it's going to be a big shutdown and I think it's
- 51:16good. They said if they didn't do the
- 51:17trail work, it could have lost the trail forever, which we
- 51:20don't want. Personally, I don't want it one
- 51:22because the Pemi loop, this is the the Lincolnwood's iconic in
- 51:27either you start or you finish the Pemi loop on Lincoln Woods.
- 51:31And I think it would be funny if let's just say these repairs
- 51:35went wrong and somebody got out there early June.
- 51:39I mean, Jay Casito has the the FKT right now, but whoever has
- 51:43the FKT if that if the Lincoln Woods got decommissioned for
- 51:46whatever reason, they have the Pemi loop forever.
- 51:49Because where else, you know, you can do a Pemi loop from a
- 51:51different trailhead, but it it would not be the same.
- 51:54It would not look the same. It would not be aesthetically it
- 51:56would it would not I would not be pleased by it.
- 51:59The new route. And and so yeah, whoever has
- 52:03that 10 move FKT, which is a huge top 10 NE FKT, you know,
- 52:08premier FKT would just have it forever.
- 52:10That would kind of be goaded. But hopefully that's not the
- 52:13case. It sounds like they're going to
- 52:14fix it. But this year, if you have a
- 52:16premier and a list, you either got to do it right away in June,
- 52:19which there might be still still snow on Garfield Ridge out out
- 52:23by the twins to Geo or or you just got to wait till next year.
- 52:27Pemi Loop is not super high on my list this year.
- 52:29So I don't I'm not super sad about it.
- 52:31But that was a Lincoln Ridge Woods recap and then the
- 52:35Olympics recap. So I had a few things here.
- 52:39I hadn't been watching a ton of it, but I do love watching the
- 52:42Olympics like every four years is perfect to watch these winter
- 52:45sports pop up like there are, you know, after two weeks of the
- 52:48Olympics, she's like, all right, I'm I'm good for a while in
- 52:50these sports or some of them. But one of the things was there
- 52:54was a video of that guy sub Six Mile on cross country skis
- 52:57uphill. This is epic.
- 52:58He had all the drool in his mouth out there and they were
- 53:02like, wow, cross country skiing is so.
- 53:04Cool. I think a lot of people already
- 53:07knew this. I already knew this.
- 53:08In the winter, one of my favorite things to do is go on
- 53:11the bike Planet Fitness and put on YouTube and put just an old
- 53:16whatever, cross country skiing, Olympics race or world
- 53:20championship race. Cross country skiing is
- 53:22electric. These guys are so fit and
- 53:24anybody at the end of a race on skis comes across the finish
- 53:28line collapses. I mean, in the shorter Sprint
- 53:32ones or I don't know, a Sprint like a 5K, they will all come
- 53:36and just trash on the floor just heaving.
- 53:40And you think would these people get go so hard because it's so
- 53:44much upper body and lower body that your entire body is just
- 53:47filled with lactic acid. And yeah, it's it is, it is
- 53:52lactate. It is, it is crazy to see it.
- 53:55So yeah, that sport super cool. And I already knew that.
- 53:57So if you if you haven't been down across Kitchi screen, get
- 54:00down across kitchi skiing, racing biathlon.
- 54:04Also cool. Who came up with the idea of
- 54:06we're just going to ski and then then you have to sit down and
- 54:08shoot a gun really quick. Also very, very cool sport.
- 54:13The best of the falls. They had the best of the falls
- 54:16video on the Olympics on Peacock, which I was like, Oh,
- 54:17this is kind of savage, but didn't have some of the harder
- 54:20falls, which I didn't know how I felt about that.
- 54:23Any who but they had some falls. There were some funny like the
- 54:25scorpion, like people just fall on their face and then scorpion
- 54:28in some of these events, hopefully admit everyone's OK.
- 54:31I'm not laughing at people's pain, but it just kind of looks
- 54:33funny. What else do I have from the
- 54:36Olympics? The ice skating guy.
- 54:38This is one of the first things I watched.
- 54:40Jocelyn wanted to watch the ice skating, and it was like the guy
- 54:42who was supposed to win by a mile and he goes on and he's
- 54:47just falling. He he fell on a couple of his
- 54:49big spins. I think he.
- 54:51I don't know if he's American. Yeah, I think he's American.
- 54:53And it was just so sad at the end of the the thing, it ended
- 54:56and he just looked so sad. The interview, He it was so sad
- 55:00because it's like everyone thought he had it in the bag.
- 55:03You work at this for years, for years.
- 55:05And then he kind of just like I blew it, like I don't know what
- 55:08happened like that. I should have won easily.
- 55:12I felt awesome going into this. I blew it.
- 55:13That was sad to watch. I think he's potentially going
- 55:17in actually, they said potentially in 4 minutes or in
- 55:2010 minutes. You guys want to hear this for a
- 55:23little bit, but he's going soon. I think there's another skating
- 55:27thing so maybe can reclaim a gold.
- 55:29But that was the ice skating guy.
- 55:30And then big air jumps. This the ramp down the big air
- 55:34slope. I am a blue guy.
- 55:37When I snowboarded, I like the Blues, even the greens, but I
- 55:41like the Blues. The the big air ski jump is
- 55:45frightening to watch. These guys go down it and some
- 55:47people go down it backwards. I know that's the thing.
- 55:49Like skiers can ski backwards, but it looks crazy when they do
- 55:51it. You're like, Oh my God, this
- 55:53guys go backwards. Wait, he's doing it on purpose.
- 55:56The big the big jumps, some of those people they'll go and you
- 56:00do the twist and you never know. I don't know the grabs of the
- 56:02spins, but it's like 788084 and like we'll you know, we'll be
- 56:07guessing like what you think that was 82 and then just
- 56:09randomly someone will have a similar he landed the good they
- 56:13you know, it all looked the same as all the rest, but it's a 45.
- 56:16You're like what? I mean, I guess that trick was
- 56:19super easy, but it all looked the same to me.
- 56:21That's just me being like, I don't know these sports.
- 56:25What Olympic sport could you make the Olympic team on?
- 56:30And you may be thinking they who you talking to me?
- 56:32I'm talking to you at home. Guys.
- 56:35There are two sports that I think everyone listening.
- 56:37If we if we committed to it, maybe not as a team, but if you
- 56:41committed to it, you could make the Olympics and this is so
- 56:44disrespectful. I don't think it's disrespectful
- 56:47like. I think you'd have to put in
- 56:48decades, maybe years, a couple good months of work.
- 56:52But this is a question. If you had the Olympic in a
- 56:55sport, what would it be? I think a lot of the summer ones
- 56:57very hard. I don't know if there's any good
- 56:59summer ones, but in the Winter Olympics, 2 come to mind for me.
- 57:04The we'll do the the least obvious this the next obvious.
- 57:09Get me on a bobsled team, get me the third part.
- 57:12Give me 3 elite bobsledders and I just have to be in the middle
- 57:17of them and I have to run with them and they're just going to
- 57:19carry me to victory. I think if you get 3 of the
- 57:22strongest bobsledders in the world, and I trained bobsled for
- 57:2610 years, I could go there and win an Olympic medal.
- 57:29Maybe that's it. If I had another life, not in
- 57:31this life, but that's one bobsled.
- 57:34With a good team and then two again, you need a good team.
- 57:38But curling, no offense, maybe this is actually maybe this
- 57:43curler's listening, this is going to get the curling
- 57:45community fired up, but I just don't know.
- 57:48It seems just like a very skilled sport.
- 57:50There's no, you know, genetic. You don't need a ton of
- 57:54strength, you don't need a ton of speed, agility, and maybe you
- 57:58need a little bit of strategy, but I feel like I can learn it.
- 58:01You'd really just honestly, if you if you're the guy, if you're
- 58:04not the guy that calls out sweep.
- 58:06I I think that I can learn how to sweep good.
- 58:09Put me on a team with three Olympic curlers and I think that
- 58:13I, you know, let me train for 10 years and I think that I could
- 58:16medal at the Olympics, so I'm going to stick to it is.
- 58:21This a bad take? Is this disrespectful?
- 58:23I don't know, but I'm sticking to it that that was a sport.
- 58:25What Olympic sport do you think you could Olympic in?
- 58:29Next up I said no Berkeley finishers, we're going to do a
- 58:33black canyons quick reaction. The Black Canyon is 100K.
- 58:39That just went down. I mean an epic battle or no, I
- 58:43shouldn't say an epic battle, an epic race.
- 58:46The the entrance list of this race was absolutely insane.
- 58:51I'm not going to like so many. Sometimes I'm like, what races
- 58:54should I cover? I'm probably not going to cover
- 58:56the big races because I'm not I'm not one and don't follow
- 58:59those races as good as a lot of people.
- 59:01I don't think I can cover it better.
- 59:04I want to focus on the northeast stuff.
- 59:06So I'll let like the big go to single track all of those other
- 59:08places to hear the you know, if you want to really hear the the
- 59:12black hundreds K scoop. But I'll tell you my thoughts on
- 59:15it because I have a few thoughts on it.
- 59:18It was a stacked field, which I think it's just so cool.
- 59:20These races are getting so competitive.
- 59:23I always thought road running was like, I was just who's
- 59:26fitter numbers. It's like very numbers wise.
- 59:28It's almost getting to a point like that in 100K where everyone
- 59:32know like I shouldn't say it. It's it's.
- 59:35But it is. Minutes.
- 59:36It's like it is just getting so so competitive.
- 59:40But for the 100K. Hans Troyer comes and gets the
- 59:43overall first place new course record, 7 hours and 20 minutes.
- 59:47He breaks the old course record by 4 minutes.
- 59:51Just an absolute. Set of a.
- 59:52Performance that guy poopy, I'm saying that right he got hurt or
- 59:58something so he dropped out and I think those are two of the
- 1:00:00favourites to have a little bit of a a duel there but.
- 1:00:04Hans Roy, I mean, the kid, the guy is insane.
- 1:00:07Everyone, everyone knows him, Everyone loves him.
- 1:00:09And I thought it was interesting.
- 1:00:11David Roche had a thing, was like the first time I saw it,
- 1:00:15Hans Roy run. I knew he was going to be, you
- 1:00:16know, world class. He was different.
- 1:00:19I think that's interesting. But you can tell this guy one,
- 1:00:25obviously he's a genetic freak. So you need that two runs.
- 1:00:29So hard I you know. He's got that Courtney Tara, you
- 1:00:34get to the end and you can barely walk.
- 1:00:36Like just wants it and wants to push it to the limit.
- 1:00:39Obviously loves the sport so, so much and has this like swagger,
- 1:00:44this moxie. He wants to be one of the
- 1:00:46greats. Saying it and then delivering it
- 1:00:48on his JFK, on his Black Canyons 100, like saying I'm going to go
- 1:00:53do this and then doing it. That is one of the hardest
- 1:00:56things to do in a super competitive sport.
- 1:00:58And I think that's what makes people huge.
- 1:01:00And so, yeah, I mean, he's young and like the world is this guy's
- 1:01:04oysters had the saying like he's elite.
- 1:01:07So and these these racers getting faster and faster and
- 1:01:10faster every year. And then the women's race, which
- 1:01:12I think is probably more competitive, had had just crazy
- 1:01:19big names in this race. So the winner, new course
- 1:01:23record, two people go sub eight. Never been done before, but the
- 1:01:27new course record. Jennifer Litcher, 7 hours, 57
- 1:01:30Rick. Minutes she gets a golden ticket
- 1:01:33and then second place and flower goes sub 8 which has never been
- 1:01:37done before so under the CR and then Tara Dow 1/3 she runs 811
- 1:01:41also under the CR. So you have three people under
- 1:01:44the course record. Think about how many years
- 1:01:46they've been running it. And that was the course record.
- 1:01:49No one had ever gone faster. And then you get a year, three
- 1:01:51people go under, It's just insane. 4th place, Molly Seidel
- 1:01:56comes from the marathon, an Olympic medalist in the
- 1:01:59marathon, fast as you can get long distance stuff.
- 1:02:03She comes in fourth. And then Abby Hall comes in
- 1:02:06fifth. There were some other big names.
- 1:02:08Riley Brady was in it. She had the course record.
- 1:02:10I think she came in ninth. Didn't have a good day, but just
- 1:02:13an absolutely slugfest like, and I think it's so I think it's
- 1:02:19actually cool. Tara Dauer and Molly Seidel come
- 1:02:22in 3rd and 4th. And I don't know enough about
- 1:02:25the other people, so maybe I'm not doing justice to them as
- 1:02:28much. But Tara Dauer, somebody who
- 1:02:30came from, you know, hiking the AT Candy Mama, just eating
- 1:02:34candy, kind of being a hiker. And then Molly Seidel is like
- 1:02:40that Olympic marathoner in that sponsored world, that racing pro
- 1:02:44elite world for so long. And it feels like 2 opposite
- 1:02:48ends of the spectrum, but they're coming together as, I
- 1:02:52mean, two of the best ultra runners in the world.
- 1:02:56I think I could fairly say that definitely in the United States.
- 1:02:59We'll see how long Molly will be in the sport.
- 1:03:01I think that's a very impressive finish.
- 1:03:02And it's one of her first ultra's longest race.
- 1:03:05So I'm sure she's learned a bunch with it.
- 1:03:08Her fitness is there. It's just going to be time and
- 1:03:10experience. She could be an absolute
- 1:03:12slugger. It's just it's very cool.
- 1:03:15Everyone's getting pushed so hard.
- 1:03:17I think it doesn't matter what your background is.
- 1:03:19There are so many ways to be good at elite ultra running, so
- 1:03:23many different areas you can succeed in.
- 1:03:26And, and if you want something, I would start going after it now
- 1:03:30because there is a million people who also want the same
- 1:03:33thing, are working really hard. So it's only going to get more
- 1:03:36competitive, more exciting in the trail racing scene over the
- 1:03:39years. And yeah, so it's cool to see.
- 1:03:42So that that was my Black Canyons 100K recap.
- 1:03:47Yeah, that's what we got. And then we're going to finish
- 1:03:50up real quick. There is a virtual race.
- 1:03:53Going on in New England. This is so last week I talked
- 1:03:56about the Frozen Folly Burke's race, which was a virtual
- 1:03:59treadmill kind of race. This month in February, Burks is
- 1:04:05also doing the Satan Sidewalk 66.66 K or the virtual 66.66
- 1:04:11hour virtual race. First of all, you mess with 66
- 1:04:15stuff, virtual the devil stuff too much.
- 1:04:17I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:04:19I think it's kind of funny, but I don't know.
- 1:04:20Sometimes you don't know what that bad you do.
- 1:04:23But it's another cool virtual race open to anybody.
- 1:04:27The 66 K is you do it Satan sidewalks, there's got to be
- 1:04:30outside on a sidewalk. You use 66K and the 66 hours of
- 1:04:35virtual indoor treadmill, I believe, where once you start
- 1:04:38the clock, you just have 66 hours to get as much as you can.
- 1:04:42And those will be ongoing. We'll go through those results
- 1:04:44at the end of the month next month.
- 1:04:46But that was the only New England ultra going on this
- 1:04:50week. And and that's what we have for
- 1:04:53today. And that's that's pretty much
- 1:04:55today's episode. Hopefully last week, if you, if
- 1:04:57you heard the John Hirsch interview, hopefully you liked
- 1:05:01it. I think it was cool to do.
- 1:05:02Next week we may have a little bit of a special episode.
- 1:05:06I don't want to, I don't know how it's going to pan out, but
- 1:05:08it'll be a little bit of a different special episode.
- 1:05:12I which should be. Exciting for me and.
- 1:05:16We're going to start doing more interviews and, and get more
- 1:05:18people on the on the podcast, which would be great to hear
- 1:05:20stories. And like I said, I got more, I
- 1:05:22got race efforts coming up this year.
- 1:05:25I'm, I'm finally starting to, you know, feel a little better.
- 1:05:28I got stuff, stuff moving. We got to keep stuff moving in
- 1:05:30the right direction, But I got some things I'm excited about.
- 1:05:33It's been getting warmer around here.
- 1:05:34Like some of these days in the high 30s even are feeling so
- 1:05:37good where the the spring is coming slowly.
- 1:05:41It's coming slowly. It's been a brutal winter, one
- 1:05:44of the coldest winters in 20 years.
- 1:05:45But I'm excited for this year. A ton of stuff going on, all
- 1:05:49those races. I think the trail scene, New
- 1:05:51England's going to be on off the charts this year.
- 1:05:53It's going to be awesome. I'm excited.
- 1:05:56And for now? This was this episode, Episode
- 1:05:5924. Almost that half a year.
- 1:06:01Let's go. 24 episodes. I appreciate you guys watching.
- 1:06:04That's all we got this week. Stay tuned for next week's
- 1:06:07episode till. Then.
- 1:06:09Please. Get into the end.
- 1:06:19I meant to do that. I meant to do that.
