- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John Chapter 7, we see Jesus
- 0:45go up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Booths and during the time of
- 0:48celebration He teaches in the Temple.
- 0:51What we as readers see all throughout this chapter, before,
- 0:54during, and after His teaching, is the response of different
- 0:57individuals and groups to the teaching and ministry of Jesus.
- 0:59Let me show you what I mean. In verse 12, as Jesus arrives to
- 1:03Jerusalem, He is who is on everyone's minds.
- 1:06Listen to this verse. There was much grumbling among
- 1:09the crowds concerning Him. Some were saying He is a good
- 1:12man. Others were saying no.
- 1:14On the contrary, He leads the people astray.
- 1:16Shortly thereafter, Jesus begins to teach and is immediately met
- 1:20with this response in verse 15. The Jews then were astonished,
- 1:23saying how has this man become learned having never been
- 1:27educated? Not long into his teaching
- 1:29though, after Jesus tells the crowds that they do not follow
- 1:32the law of Moses because they are seeking to kill him, a
- 1:35reality that will be demonstrated soon, the crowd
- 1:37reacts in verse 20 this way. The crowd answered, You have a
- 1:41demon who seeks to kill you. As Jesus continues to teach,
- 1:45another group says that he cannot be the Christ because no
- 1:48one will know where the Christ comes from.
- 1:50But they all know where Jesus is from.
- 1:53When Jesus asserts that he's from God, this group
- 1:56unsuccessfully attempts to seize Jesus.
- 1:58In the next verse, however, we see that this response is not
- 2:01universal. Listen to verse 31.
- 2:04But many of the crowd believed in him, and they were saying,
- 2:07when the Christ comes, he will not perform.
- 2:09More signs than those which this man has, will he?
- 2:13After Jesus finishes teaching, we see even more division over
- 2:16who this Jesus is. Some asserted that he must be
- 2:19the promised prophet. Others said he was the Christ.
- 2:23Still others said there was no way the Christ could come from
- 2:25Galilee. And the result of all this is
- 2:28that a division occurred in the crowd.
- 2:31There were some who wanted to seize him and others who
- 2:33marvelled at him. So what should we take away from
- 2:36an account like this? Why would the biblical author
- 2:39include this chapter for his readers?
- 2:41Here's the short of it. Jesus is divisive.
- 2:45Not divisive in the sense that he's attempting to stir up
- 2:47trouble for no reason. In fact, there's never been a
- 2:50peacemaker like Jesus. No, Jesus is divisive by the
- 2:53very nature of who he is. Jesus is the way, the truth, and
- 2:57the life. But as we should well know, the
- 2:59truth is divisive. For some the truth is salve to
- 3:03the soul, but for others it's simply too hard to swallow.
- 3:07And that's what we see here. Jesus asserting himself to be
- 3:11exactly who he is, the Christ, the Son of God, is met with
- 3:15outright rejection, confusion, disdain, and faith.
- 3:21And so the question again turns to us, What will we do with
- 3:25Jesus? What will we do when his
- 3:27teachings are hard to follow? What will we do when he makes us
- 3:30uncomfortable? Will we trust him or will we
- 3:33reject him? Jesus tells us there is but one
- 3:36right response. Listen to his words in verses 37
- 3:39and 38. If anyone is thirsty, let him
- 3:42come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the
- 3:45Scripture said, from his innermost being will flow rivers
- 3:49of living water. Jesus is the only one who can
- 3:52satisfy our souls, who can satisfy the deepest longings of
- 3:56our hearts. Above the noise, above the host
- 3:59of responses to Jesus from the world, believe yourself that He
- 4:03is who He says He is. Believe that He is the Son of
- 4:07God, slain, so that you and I might have life and receive the
- 4:12joy and peace that only He can provide.
