- 0:05This is genuine connections featuring
- 0:07collaborative conversations about
- 0:09community, content, creativity,
- 0:12commerce, and the convergence of media
- 0:14and marketing.
- 0:18>> So Andy Wilson is our great partner from
- 0:21Mlache. Welcome. Thank you for joining.
- 0:23You got in today.
- 0:24>> Yeah. Thanks for having me.
- 0:25>> Uh, anyone else get in today? You still
- 0:26jetlagged? Yeah. So, we're day two at
- 0:30CES. Um, and some themes have already
- 0:33emerged. Some things that we've been
- 0:35talking about for months, for in certain
- 0:37cases years.
- 0:39>> You're someone who has worked in this
- 0:41space for
- 0:42>> I won't
- 0:43>> Yeah. Don't don't say the total number
- 0:44of years.
- 0:45>> We'll we'll count we we'll count them in
- 0:47decades, not years. How about that? Um,
- 0:49but as someone who has been in the
- 0:51publishing space for, you know, really
- 0:54seen the evolution of it from purely
- 0:56print to digital to now the next
- 0:58generation of technology-led content and
- 1:01experiences. Where do you define and
- 1:04where do you see us at this moment in
- 1:06time? I mean, it's a challenging
- 1:08environment, but it all we've gone
- 1:10through these many times and
- 1:13staying customer focused and making sure
- 1:16you're getting and garnering that
- 1:18engagement and being true to the
- 1:20customer is how we'll find our way to
- 1:23the next stage. Now, video is not
- 1:26something that early on any publisher
- 1:30thought about. It was not something that
- 1:32they could think about unless you were a
- 1:34TV network or right you know worked in
- 1:36in film but the publishing industry in
- 1:40terms of magazines and newspap
- 1:42newspapers which is what mlache has been
- 1:44built on and grown in through mergers
- 1:46and acquisitions as well as just through
- 1:48good oldfashioned hard work and
- 1:50investigative journalism and reporting.
- 1:53At what point did video become a
- 1:55priority or something that you saw as a
- 1:57monetizable opportunity? It's been a few
- 2:00years we've been in video, but in the
- 2:02horizontal video space, it it's the
- 2:05engagement is not as strong. We're not
- 2:07building those 16 to 18 minute sessions
- 2:10that you showed there in the video. Um,
- 2:14what we're doing now is getting our
- 2:16editors to be front-facing and really
- 2:19building that engagement with the
- 2:20community and producing a lot more
- 2:22content than what we were in the
- 2:24horizontal realm.
- 2:26You're someone who strikes me as curious
- 2:29and passionate about learning. And as
- 2:31I've gotten to know you over the last
- 2:32couple of years, you know, you're you're
- 2:35a sponge for a lot of information. How
- 2:37do larger legacy organizations, some of
- 2:41some of us work at some of these types
- 2:43of um big slower moving institutions,
- 2:47how are you embracing how do you find
- 2:50change and champions within those types
- 2:53of structures? At Mcclache, it's been
- 2:55great because it starts at the top and
- 2:57we have a CEO who embraces change and is
- 3:00really about going out there trying new
- 3:03things, not doing the same things we've
- 3:05been doing for the past decade. We have
- 3:06to be embracing AI,
- 3:10>> looking at what's next and engaging the
- 3:13consumer as the number one thing that we
- 3:15do. And so we have the freedom to fail
- 3:18and to try new things and to really get
- 3:20out there. and part of what we're doing
- 3:22in vertical video. We've been doing this
- 3:25for about a year. We just signed on with
- 3:27you and we're looking forward to really
- 3:29building that vertical video experience
- 3:32as a front-facing and really the primary
- 3:35focus of our sites
- 3:38>> across some of or most of the properties
- 3:40with whom you are working. Where does
- 3:44the creator or the affiliate or the
- 3:47influencer-led whether it's content
- 3:49generation or commerce driving
- 3:52experience, where does that fall in sort
- 3:55of your purview or your list of
- 3:57priorities that we need to kind of move
- 3:59to the top? We strongly believe that
- 4:01we're not going to be the ones creating
- 4:02all the content that's going into the
- 4:04vertical video engine for the for our
- 4:06shorts experience that's on our own and
- 4:08operated sites or in our apps. We
- 4:10believe that we will partner with
- 4:11creators, influencers to help us build
- 4:14that engagement. So, we'll find ones
- 4:17that are tied to our brands or talking
- 4:19about areas where our brands play and
- 4:22we'll add that into the experience as
- 4:25well as community-led and having
- 4:27community be a big piece of that. So, it
- 4:30will be our own editors, front-facing
- 4:33content.
- 4:34>> Yeah. It will be influencers and
- 4:36creators and it will be community and
- 4:38all of that together will create the
- 4:40experience that I think the consumers
- 4:42want.
- 4:42>> You hit one of my buzz words, right?
- 4:44Community, which is something that's
- 4:45been at the at the foundational core of
- 4:48what we're building, right? From a
- 4:50technology perspective, giving users,
- 4:52consumers, um, passionate fans of music
- 4:56and sports an opportunity to connect. I
- 5:00think personally that's where social
- 5:01channels may have
- 5:04kind of missed the boat in terms of
- 5:05connecting each other. How do you think
- 5:07community can like what does that mean
- 5:09for mlache to actually lead with
- 5:11community? If you take a look at there
- 5:14are passion points within all of our
- 5:16brands. Uh let's take US Weekly for
- 5:18example, Dancing with the Stars.
- 5:19Everybody's wanting to talk about who
- 5:21got voted out, who's going to get voted
- 5:23out, what
- 5:24>> Yeah. what the dances were and having
- 5:27them to be able to participate and have
- 5:28back and forth with our editors who are
- 5:30talking about what they feel and adding
- 5:33that in. I I think that's going to be a
- 5:36really big step forward for us. Does
- 5:39giving some element of control or
- 5:42surrendering some of that to
- 5:47>> the gen pop
- 5:48>> make you nervous at all?
- 5:50>> I think it I wouldn't say nervous, I'd
- 5:52say uncomfortable, right? It's not
- 5:54something that we have done recently,
- 5:56right? But if you go back in time, there
- 5:58was a time where community was a much
- 6:00larger portion of I mean way way back in
- 6:04the day, there were message boards on
- 6:05almost every media site if you can
- 6:07remember back then.
- 6:08>> I sure yes, of course. There was a lot
- 6:11more back and forth with the community
- 6:14and the media brands and that's kind of
- 6:17gotten lost and I think this is a way to
- 6:19bring it back. How are you thinking
- 6:23about I mean we're all here to learn
- 6:26about AI as well right? You guys are
- 6:28leading the way in a lot of cases from
- 6:30generative content which we've seen to
- 6:32now bringing in some moderation and AIEL
- 6:35curation which for me makes it a little
- 6:39bit more palatable as someone who is a
- 6:40parent of teenagers who isn't fully
- 6:43comfortable with what's happening in
- 6:44social.
- 6:45>> Yes. How are you embracing and
- 6:46understanding where and how to
- 6:48prioritize
- 6:50real life applications? Right? I I think
- 6:53brain safety is first and foremost for
- 6:56us with our our brains which are even
- 6:59older than I am. Um so we really are
- 7:03leaning on AI to really do a lot of the
- 7:05heavy lifting there and then with a
- 7:07human element on top to make sure we're
- 7:09getting it right and then retraining to
- 7:11make sure that's happening. But we're
- 7:13utilizing AI across the company and
- 7:16every single person is is utilizing AI
- 7:18to make themselves faster, to make
- 7:20themselves better, to be able to take
- 7:24our sites forward.
- 7:26>> So, generation,
- 7:28operation, optimization, orchestration,
- 7:30a lot of big words. Yeah.
- 7:32>> Um, but really is making it simpler.
- 7:35>> Yeah. We have for the past two years
- 7:38really been focused on having AI make
- 7:42every employee better.
- 7:44>> Yeah.
- 7:44>> Right. It's not just about the tech
- 7:46group using AI. It's not just about a
- 7:48select few utilizing AI and then
- 7:51everybody else goes to them to learn it.
- 7:52It's really about every employee
- 7:56finding out how to make themselves
- 7:58better utilizing AI. Now, one of the
- 8:02things that when we first started
- 8:04talking and planning and working
- 8:05together on was how you envision this
- 8:09becoming a monetization engine. I
- 8:11>> Yeah.
- 8:11>> Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's part
- 8:12of your remitt is helping the company
- 8:14make more money, right?
- 8:15>> Yes.
- 8:15>> So, how does bringing a video solution
- 8:19like ours um but really more as a
- 8:22consumer experience um how does that
- 8:25help? I think having a better video
- 8:29engagement experience where the consumer
- 8:31is engaged, spending a lot of time, is
- 8:33interested
- 8:35is what our advertising partners want.
- 8:38And what we're seeing in vertical video
- 8:40is a much more engaged consumer, not
- 8:43just with our content, but also with our
- 8:45advertisers content that is in there.
- 8:47And it also allows them to be a little
- 8:49more creative. they're they're creating
- 8:51these vertical video assets already for
- 8:54the social media channels and allows
- 8:56them to bring them into the open web
- 8:59which has not had a good place for
- 9:01vertical video to date.
- 9:03>> So that was going to be the the last
- 9:04question that I wanted to end on as
- 9:07we've been building out our relationship
- 9:09and the growth of the genuine media
- 9:12network is is is continuing to expand.
- 9:15How do you envision working with and
- 9:18across not only your partners but other
- 9:21partners? I think that's still to be
- 9:23seen, but I think the opportunity is
- 9:25substantial as we look as as you build
- 9:28your platform and there's more ways to
- 9:30intermix the content, as you identify
- 9:33the likes, as the algorithm gets better
- 9:36and we create a brand safety
- 9:38environment. How can we bring
- 9:41>> It's interesting because you guys have
- 9:42the national big publications. You have
- 9:45very large newspapers and you have more
- 9:48I would say as a New Yorker second tier
- 9:51city publications. No offense to anyone
- 9:54who lives in
- 9:55>> Miami disagree with you.
- 9:56>> I wouldn't say they're second class. I
- 9:58didn't say second class. I said
- 10:00populationwise. Um but does the strategy
- 10:03change at all in terms of how that
- 10:04network
- 10:06grows?
- 10:07>> I think it does. Yeah, I think as you
- 10:09look at those communities,
- 10:12there's going to be different things
- 10:13that are of interest in the smaller
- 10:14communities than some of the larger
- 10:16ones, but I do think at the core of it
- 10:19is community and they'll find topics of
- 10:21interest that they want to talk about.
- 10:23And I think that goes across our
- 10:25national brands and it goes across our
- 10:27local brands.
- 10:28>> Andy, thank you for being here. I
- 10:30appreciate it. We made a genuine
- 10:32connection again once again. Um, and
- 10:35thank you guys for being here as well,
- 10:37for indulging us, for helping us
- 10:38participate and make some content. Um,
- 10:41and look forward to working with more
- 10:43and all of you as we depart and leave
- 10:47happily and uh, smarter from Las Vegas.
- 10:51Thank you. and gets
