- 0:00Hey, so thank you for joining us again this week.
- 0:02We are still in the prologues of Inevitable Ruin.
- 0:06So this chapter is a Porthus point of view chapter
- 0:10and it shows the interactions between him and
- 0:14his lawyer while he's negotiating his deal to
- 0:17exit the dungeon. And then next week we will
- 0:20be on book seven, chapter one. I didn't know
- 0:24that a book. could have so many prologue chapters
- 0:28is that normal for a book to have four prologue
- 0:31chapters if it's a pretty established series
- 0:34it can be so that does make sense but i think
- 0:37it was maybe in the gate of the feral gods where
- 0:40i was just like how many epilogues does this
- 0:44book have and i was like are these epilogues
- 0:47or like is this just plot i'm gonna go on the
- 0:51side of plot. We wanted to start out by giving
- 0:55an introduction of who is Porthis. So we first
- 1:00learn about Porthis in Dungeon Anarchist cookbook
- 1:04when Carl receives it. And Porthis was the very
- 1:07first person to ever receive the cookbook during
- 1:10the 15th season of The Crawl on the 9th floor.
- 1:13So he's the first person to get it, but it's
- 1:16the second edition. What was in the first edition?
- 1:21Was it just AI generated? Yes. So that's not
- 1:24necessarily clarified, but it does appear that
- 1:27the information in the very first edition was
- 1:30AI generated by Porthos' admission in his cookbook
- 1:34entries that we get throughout the series. It
- 1:36was pretty basic spells and recipes that weren't
- 1:39very useful that he added upon. And then those
- 1:42continue to be added upon by every future recipient
- 1:45of the cookbook. So. When Porfus was in the crawl,
- 1:48this was really before things like the Apothecary
- 1:53or like the Open Intellect Pacifist Network existed.
- 1:56I would think that one of those groups kind of
- 2:01threw together some basic information and found
- 2:03a way to send it through a gift or something
- 2:04like that. So it's interesting to think about,
- 2:07but I'm not sure if those groups were even organized
- 2:10enough to plant something like that in the dungeon.
- 2:14Maybe it was a residual. I mean, I think that
- 2:17it was generated by the dungeon. I think it was
- 2:20something that was born in the dungeon. Yeah,
- 2:22I'm just not sure what kind of motivations an
- 2:25AI would have for starting something like that.
- 2:26Whereas if there was groups that were anti -crawl,
- 2:30it would make a lot of sense for them. It would.
- 2:32And as far as we are aware in our research, it
- 2:36is not clarified exactly how the cookbook originally
- 2:39came into existence. So continuing on with...
- 2:43who Porthas is. We learn a little bit more about
- 2:45him throughout the series. His first actual entry
- 2:48that we read from the cookbook is in Gate of
- 2:51the Feral Gods. And he talks about how he doesn't
- 2:56feel like he's added enough to the cookbook.
- 2:58Like if his contributions are ever actually going
- 3:01to be useful and if there's going to be enough
- 3:05information to be useful in future generations
- 3:07after more people add to it. And I just think
- 3:10it's interesting or important to call out that.
- 3:13Pretty much everything we hear about Porthas
- 3:15throughout the books is that he seems to have
- 3:17a lot of self -doubt of whether what he's done
- 3:20and what he's contributed is actually going to
- 3:22make any kind of difference. And I think that's
- 3:25important to his character and his motivations
- 3:28for why he does everything he does after his
- 3:32exit from the dungeon. I mean, we see that start
- 3:35in this chapter where he keeps talking about
- 3:38how Minerva told him to go. but he should have
- 3:43gone back for her anyways. And he has a lot of
- 3:46self -doubt and second -guessing, and that's
- 3:49what he's obsessing over in most of this chapter.
- 3:51So I would say that that is a core part of his
- 3:54personality. It is interesting to me that he
- 3:57felt so much guilt about not contributing more
- 4:00when no one had ever contributed before. He was
- 4:03the first person who had it, and he still didn't
- 4:05feel like he was doing enough was interesting
- 4:06to me. I think that is just a... core of the
- 4:10kind of person that he is that he wants to do
- 4:13more to help people he feels I would say maybe
- 4:16even a bit of a hero complex where he he wants
- 4:19to do everything he can to help others and he
- 4:22feels inadequate and no matter what his efforts
- 4:25amount to I'm sure that's part of what attracted
- 4:27him to Carl is that Carl also has a hero complex
- 4:30and like does attract like so I'm sure that's
- 4:33not coincidence right And that actually leads
- 4:36into the next point is Porthis is the CEO and
- 4:39president of outreach operations for the pacifist
- 4:42network. And he is a driving factor behind why
- 4:46they sponsored Carl on the fifth floor, supported
- 4:49him. You know, they gave him the Toraline, which
- 4:51was what do you call it? Oh, the biggest MacGuffin
- 4:55that ever existed. Right. We should define what
- 4:58a MacGuffin is. So Merriam -Webster says that
- 5:01a MacGuffin is a plot device in a story that
- 5:03serves to motivate characters and drive the plot
- 5:06forward, but is ultimately unimportant to the
- 5:09audience or the story's resolution itself. So
- 5:13it was definitely that for a while and then became
- 5:15super important. We already said this, but to
- 5:19clarify, Porthis is the founder of the Open Intellect
- 5:23Pacifist Network, and that is a very big... piece
- 5:26of what this chapter amounts to. I also wanted
- 5:31to call out the first actual cookbook entry that
- 5:35we hear from his perspective in the series, which
- 5:37is from Gate of the Feral Gods, where he says,
- 5:40if I survive my 100 seasons of servitude, I will
- 5:44do everything I can to end this horror. I don't
- 5:47know if I have the strength, but I will do my
- 5:49best to not be broken. This will be my last entry
- 5:52in this book, but I am not yet done with the
- 5:54enemy. As long as I have breath, I will fight.
- 5:59And one thing I wanted to call out here is the
- 6:03I will do my best to not be broken. I don't know
- 6:05if that reminds you of anything, but it sounds
- 6:07a lot like you will not break me. And I think
- 6:11that's a strong parallel of what drew Porthis
- 6:14to Carl and shows that they do have a lot in
- 6:17common. What did you think? I think my question
- 6:19is, did his lawyer let him go into the bathroom
- 6:22to write this? Right. Because he obviously wrote
- 6:25this after he made his deal because his deal
- 6:28was 100 seasons as a game guide. So, yeah. Did
- 6:31he get the opportunity to make one last entry
- 6:33after he took his deal? I mean, I guess they
- 6:37say that you have a few minutes to sort through
- 6:39your inventory. Maybe he was like, yeah, bathroom
- 6:43first. Maybe he has IBS like Carl. So Carl always
- 6:47goes into the bathroom to read the cookbook,
- 6:49but I think you can make entries into it without
- 6:51having it physically in your hands. Because like
- 6:54when Carl gets it, AI tells him that he now has
- 6:57like a special scratch pad where he can write
- 6:59stuff into. So maybe you only need to physically
- 7:02hold it if you're reading it. Now that we've
- 7:04given a bit of background, we're going to start
- 7:06going chronologically through this chapter and
- 7:09discussing it. And I think narratively, this
- 7:12chapter exists to give us some background on
- 7:15Porthus and also to give a perspective of how
- 7:20traumatic it is when you're negotiating these
- 7:24deals and how you have just gotten pulled out
- 7:28of a terrible situation where you may be watched.
- 7:31Multiple people you know die. And now you have
- 7:35to negotiate, you know, what the rest of your
- 7:38life is going to look like and how maybe you
- 7:42are not in a appropriate headspace to be doing
- 7:45that at this time. Yeah. It starts out with him
- 7:50saying his arm keeps shaking. He's trying to
- 7:53get his arm to stop shaking. And that's repeated
- 7:55several times throughout this chapter. Yeah,
- 7:59because his lawyer is trying to talk to him about
- 8:01what deals are potentially on the table, but
- 8:04he cannot think about anything except for his
- 8:08friend. We see here right at the very beginning,
- 8:11it basically noted that this lawyer does not
- 8:15seem to give a shit about Porthis. He won't even
- 8:19look at him. And then later in the chapter that
- 8:21their eyes met for the briefest moment. There
- 8:24was nothing there. No sympathy. Nothing. Don't
- 8:26judge him for bringing snacks, though. I mean,
- 8:29man's got to eat, right? I mean, you also don't
- 8:32know how many of these meetings he's doing in
- 8:34a day. Well, I don't think there's very many
- 8:36people that survived this floor. It is true.
- 8:39So, Quasar is actually a good lawyer? What makes
- 8:42Quasar a good lawyer? The fact that he actually
- 8:44cares. He is very invested in Carl's interests.
- 8:48He is always suggesting new ideas to him. In
- 8:52the next chapter, he's like, well, you know,
- 8:54you've been gone, but like I've been doing everything
- 8:56I can while I wasn't able to contact you. Whereas
- 9:00I just don't see this lawyer proactively doing
- 9:03anything for any crawlers. No, he is here to
- 9:07relay information and provide the slightest amount
- 9:10of guidance with absolutely zero sympathy whatsoever.
- 9:13And I just love Quasar coming into every situation
- 9:17like. Hey, you guys need to stop what you're
- 9:18doing. Stop talking to my client without me being
- 9:20present. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm going
- 9:23to ram my blah up your blah. Anyways, this isn't
- 9:27an episode about how awesome Quasar is, but come
- 9:29on. Yeah, so we talked about Minerva earlier,
- 9:32but it is interesting that that is someone that
- 9:34Porphos met in the dungeon and he didn't know
- 9:37beforehand and he still had such a strong emotional
- 9:39attachment to her, which, you know, we would
- 9:42say that Carl feels that way about Amani or Katia.
- 9:46that they are like family to him, even though
- 9:48he didn't know them before the dungeon. But this
- 9:51season that Carl is in actually does have a very
- 9:54high survival rate. Records, like tens of thousands
- 9:57higher. Yeah, so it is interesting to point out
- 10:00that there are still pairings of people who came
- 10:03into the dungeon together and are still together,
- 10:06like Donut and Carl, Amani and Ellie, Li Jun
- 10:10and Zhang. So that is an interesting thing to
- 10:13think about as far as... Corphos was so traumatized
- 10:18that he didn't know what was going to happen
- 10:20to someone that he didn't even know before he
- 10:22came into the dungeon. And, you know, how much
- 10:25worse it would be if it was someone you'd known
- 10:27your entire life. Right. And he comes into this
- 10:30meeting with his lawyer to make this deal. And
- 10:32he just keeps asking if he can find out what
- 10:34happened to her. And I think that, you know,
- 10:37like they were trying to escape the floor and
- 10:40they were crawling up the back of this giant
- 10:41monster and her foot is trapped or whatever.
- 10:45He leaves and goes through. And I think the way
- 10:48that he's reacting and behaving in this chapter
- 10:50is similar to how Carl would react. Say it was
- 10:52Carl and Katya was right behind him and he doesn't
- 10:54know if she made it through. He's going to be
- 10:56freaking the fuck out. Well, and what's messed
- 10:59up is he might never know. So it's basically
- 11:03like the best analogy that I can have is when
- 11:06I was a teenager, if you missed an episode of
- 11:09a TV show that you were really into. Your best
- 11:12chance of finding out what happened was you'd
- 11:15kind of have to call around and see if anyone
- 11:17else had watched it and would tell you about
- 11:20it. So this is kind of the same situation where
- 11:23as Porphos goes into being a game guide, he just
- 11:26has to ask other people, hey, do you remember
- 11:30this person? Do you know what happened to her?
- 11:32And especially with the way that the deals work.
- 11:37You might be on a completely different timeline
- 11:39than everyone you've ever known where you might
- 11:42be in the dungeon longer than them. And who knows
- 11:45if you'll ever actually meet up. Milk is an example
- 11:48of someone who is in the dungeon for an insanely
- 11:50long time. And nobody ever interacted with her
- 11:54and nobody knew what happened to her. We find
- 11:57out if Porthos ever knows what happens to Minerva
- 12:00or runs into her. We don't find out. But I think
- 12:03the way that he would find out is like Mordecai.
- 12:06for example, as a game guide, would probably
- 12:08be pretty up on what happened in the last season.
- 12:11So I think Corphos would go into the dungeon
- 12:15as a game guide and he would need to connect
- 12:17with the other game guides. And it does seem
- 12:20like there is some community there. So for example,
- 12:23Mistress Tianeth is able to come into the guild
- 12:26hall and is able to spend time with them. So
- 12:29the game guides can interact with each other
- 12:31and that would be a way that they would share
- 12:32information. Right, but I mean like after he
- 12:35gets out of the dungeon, does Porthos ever learn
- 12:38or figure out what happened to Minerva? I don't
- 12:41know. I guess we don't know. I mean, I would
- 12:44think once you got out of the dungeon, maybe
- 12:47you could get old episodes of The Crawl and maybe
- 12:49you could find out, but that's really up for
- 12:51interpretation. Is it like Netflix and you can
- 12:53just go and pull old seasons on demand? I mean,
- 12:57I am pretty confident that they have that ability.
- 13:00The next point that they get to is Porthos' lawyer
- 13:04starts giving him his deals. The first deal is
- 13:08crap, even by the lawyer's own admission. He's
- 13:11a floor 15 undead, low chance of survival, but
- 13:15he'll be out fast in like 20 seasons or something.
- 13:18And it comes with a small stipend, no guaranteed
- 13:21housing. And his lawyer specifically says, former
- 13:25crawlers always find a place to live. Almost
- 13:28always. And it's interesting to note that that
- 13:31was going on so far back, you know, I think thousands
- 13:34of years ago, basically. But Porthis changes
- 13:37this through creating the open intellect pacifist
- 13:40network. He says, no, crawlers are going to have
- 13:42a place to live. And that's a big piece of what
- 13:46that network does. And that's really powerful
- 13:48as to the impact that he makes. Next part of
- 13:51the chapter that we're talking about right after
- 13:53he's given his first deal offer. is he asks like
- 13:57can I just leave like I need to know what happens
- 13:59to Minerva and the lawyer basically tells him
- 14:02sure you can leave but the outreach guilds on
- 14:05the 11th floor aren't going to open up until
- 14:07the end of the floor so if he makes it that far
- 14:11and goes to an outreach guild with like no chance
- 14:13of getting further and actually completing the
- 14:15floor and getting through a door that his offers
- 14:18aren't going to be nearly as good yeah definitely
- 14:19and I think In a lot of scenarios, you're looking
- 14:24at something like maybe there's no chance of
- 14:27survival, but maybe you and one of the people
- 14:30you're with can't survive. And so you would take
- 14:33a not very favorable deal just to avoid that
- 14:38situation. Right. Like kind of what happened
- 14:40or what was possibly going to happen in Eye of
- 14:43the Bedlam Bride, where there was three people
- 14:45and only two of them had a key. Maybe there was
- 14:48an outreach guild they could have gone to on
- 14:50a different floor, different scenario. And they're
- 14:52like, hey, we all want to get out. Let's all
- 14:54take shitty deals because we don't want to make
- 14:56this terrible decision. Yeah, definitely. And
- 14:58we will definitely talk about more at the end
- 15:00of this book in, I don't know, six months. But
- 15:03I think that Carl and Donut got offered a really
- 15:07good deal and that they got offered a deal to
- 15:10stay together. And that seems so rare. We haven't
- 15:14heard of any other options of that. That was
- 15:17honestly a sweetheart deal. But I also think
- 15:20it was the AI messing with Carl because it was
- 15:23such a good, obvious deal that he was never going
- 15:26to take. Does the AI come up with the deals?
- 15:30Actually, I don't know who comes up with the
- 15:31deals. That's a good question. I don't think
- 15:32we know the answer. I've always thought it was
- 15:35the AI. That's just kind of been my back of the
- 15:37head assumption. But you're right that I don't
- 15:39really have any book passages to support that.
- 15:42I don't either. Not offhand. Maybe one of you
- 15:44do. Let us know. But the reason that I think
- 15:47the AI is involved in making the deals is they
- 15:50all seem a little ironic. And some of the deals
- 15:54that Porphos got offered seemed like things that
- 15:57he would never possibly accept because they were
- 16:00personally insulting to him. Right. So like he
- 16:03was offered a deal as a hunter attendant and
- 16:06he was like, there's no way I would freaking
- 16:09do that. The hunters killed all of the NPCs on
- 16:12that floor. like why would i want to do that
- 16:15and his lawyer tells him oh it's pretty safe
- 16:17but it's like no they killed everyone and the
- 16:20lawyer says only the ones they could find come
- 16:22on i mean you also don't know are the hunters
- 16:24going to get sick of their attendant or you know
- 16:26upset with them and go murder bot on them sure
- 16:30it's safe right so yeah if you're as long as
- 16:33you your attendant does everything you want and
- 16:35you're perfectly happy with them I wanted to
- 16:37go back to Bree saying that, you know, she felt
- 16:39like it was a really good deal. And it was a
- 16:41very good deal that Jonah and Carl were offered
- 16:43to stay together and take over Chaco's role on
- 16:46the prize wheel. And when Bree read their deal
- 16:50and before I had even gotten to that point, she
- 16:53was like, they were given a really good deal.
- 16:54I think they should have taken it. And I just
- 16:56told her it doesn't matter what kind of awesome
- 16:58deal they were given. There's no shot in the
- 17:00world that Carl was ever going to take a deal,
- 17:03no matter what it was. That is absolutely antithetical
- 17:07to everything. Well, and I think that kind of
- 17:10shows that Carl is an antihero because I think
- 17:14he wants to believe for himself that his love
- 17:18for Donut is always his first purpose and that
- 17:21he's making all the decisions with her best interest
- 17:24in mind. But that's not true. Yeah, I don't think
- 17:28he's. He's not always doing that. Like she has
- 17:31a very high priority to him, but he definitely
- 17:33makes a lot of decisions that are pretty risky
- 17:35and put her life and other people's lives in
- 17:37danger. I think, what do they call it? Carling
- 17:40it up? Definitely. Don't carl it up, Carl. But
- 17:44yeah, I think that his version of himself that
- 17:48he believes isn't always true. Right. And I think
- 17:51we see that with Porthos as well. Can you elaborate
- 17:53on that? Yeah, I can definitely elaborate on
- 17:56that. So we learn this later in the book that
- 17:58Porthis is working with the apothecary and has
- 18:02some kind of secret plan going on with them.
- 18:05We learn this in a chapter about Rosetta and
- 18:08a conversation she's having with Porthis. And
- 18:10I think that he does have everyone's best interests
- 18:15in mind to an extent, but he also has his own
- 18:17motives. And she's very doubtful of the apothecary
- 18:21and what their goals are. And she doesn't trust
- 18:23the apothecary. But like Carl, he's like, no,
- 18:25you just have to trust me. You have to trust
- 18:26my intuition and believe in me. And ultimately
- 18:31Rosetta does believe in him and trust him. And
- 18:34I think that we see that a lot with Carl as well,
- 18:36that they're like, no, this is freaking crazy.
- 18:38Like this is unhinged, but we trust you. Editor's
- 18:42note here, the chapter that we're referencing
- 18:45is titled Rosetta and this inevitable ruin. It's
- 18:48between chapter 68 and chapter 69. So I just
- 18:53wanted to talk a little bit about the temp floor
- 18:55that Porphos had just exited. And I'm going to
- 18:59read a quote here. So the temp had been a nightmare,
- 19:02a world where every physical, non -natural object
- 19:05had sapience. Some could speak, all were psychotic.
- 19:10A world where if one object consumed another,
- 19:12it grew in power. By the end, there had been
- 19:15behemoths roaming the barren floor, all searching
- 19:18for one last morsel, all wanting to get bigger.
- 19:22So, assuming that this is kind of like Cuba,
- 19:26where you're just dealing with the real world,
- 19:29it's just a dungeon version, there are so many
- 19:33objects to interact with. And if they're all
- 19:36psychotic, that is going to be super stressful
- 19:40and a lot to deal with. Right. Like, you're just
- 19:43like, I need to open this door. And you go to
- 19:45grab the doorknob and it's like, hey, buddy,
- 19:47get your hands off me. I'll bite your arm off.
- 19:48And then the door is also screaming at you and
- 19:52trying to do stuff. And like everywhere you go,
- 19:54everything except for the rocks and the trees
- 19:58and the grass and the ground has its own agenda
- 20:01and is psychotic. that would do to you. No, I
- 20:08mean, it sounds like a sensory nightmare and
- 20:10that is the biggest understatement on the planet.
- 20:14Yeah, and I mean, aside from the stressful exit
- 20:19from the floor and not knowing what happened
- 20:20to his friend, like, I don't know if any of the
- 20:24other floors that we've seen in the series with
- 20:26Carl and Donut and everyone was as terrible as
- 20:29this one sounds. No, this sounds like the worst
- 20:32possible scenario to me. Yeah, like it's really
- 20:36hard to think about how unnerving that would
- 20:40be. And like, so even if you're looting this
- 20:43stuff, you're still looting like sapient psychotic
- 20:45items. Is everything that the mobs drop also
- 20:49sapient and psychotic? Like, that just sounds
- 20:52terrible. Well, and I wonder, so in the Cuba
- 20:56level, they did have the announcement that it's
- 21:00going to be in the next chapter. That anything
- 21:03that you took from the eighth floor that was
- 21:06a object from before collapse would be deleted
- 21:09from your inventory. So I would think that it
- 21:12would be a same scenario if you did make it onto
- 21:15the 11th floor. Possibly. Very possible. Maybe
- 21:19you just had psychotic scissors to throw at people.
- 21:21The scissors as they scream through the air.
- 21:25I'll cut you. I can almost see it like how the
- 21:28slug lows are. They just come out of nowhere
- 21:30and they're like. Yeah, bitch, take that right
- 21:34in the kisser. Which I don't know when we're
- 21:37going to talk about this. So let's talk about
- 21:39it now. One of the things that I think is really
- 21:42cool that I think a lot of people don't pick
- 21:45up on is, you know what the Sologalos are supposed
- 21:48to be based on, right? Yeah, they're supposed
- 21:50to be based on the Juggalos. Yes, but because
- 21:53the meeting of the Juggalos is in Detroit. That's
- 21:56why the slugalos all really like Imani and are
- 21:59super nice to her all the time. And they're like,
- 22:02hey, you're 313, which is like their area code.
- 22:05That gets asked about a lot online. I did forget
- 22:09that the gathering happens in Detroit. If you
- 22:14don't know anything about juggalos or the gathering
- 22:16of the juggalos, you should look it up. It is
- 22:20unhinged. All right. We get into his lawyer offering
- 22:24him his final deal, which is as a game guide.
- 22:28And in this part, this is wondering, you know,
- 22:31what he doesn't even know what the next floor
- 22:32is going to be. But he learns that if you get
- 22:36a description of the next floor, that it usually
- 22:38adds some time to whatever deal you take, you
- 22:41know, a season, couple seasons, which in the
- 22:43scope of 100 seasons doesn't seem that bad. But
- 22:46I do think this is just interesting that they're
- 22:48adding this in here because. This chapter not
- 22:51only is giving us a lot of insight into who Porthas
- 22:54is and what his motivations are, but also is
- 22:56giving us some context for how deals work and
- 23:00what that process looks like that we're going
- 23:01to see at the end of book seven when Carl gets
- 23:03his deal. The choice that Porthas ends up taking
- 23:06is as a game guide for 100 seasons, which is
- 23:09significantly longer than any other deal he's
- 23:12given. But why does he take this deal? I mean,
- 23:16I think being a game guide does have some benefits
- 23:19in that it gives you a long time to kind of understand
- 23:22how the universe works, what's going on outside
- 23:26the dungeon, if what we see from Mordecai is
- 23:31any indication, although he might be more plugged
- 23:34in than most. It gives you a lot of time to acclimate
- 23:37and build community and figure out what you're
- 23:40going to do afterwards. I do think it's really
- 23:42interesting that Odette got out. so much earlier
- 23:46than chaco and mordecai and like obviously that's
- 23:50because she took a deal earlier and she was from
- 23:52an earlier season but it's kind of interesting
- 23:55that they still know that like she's out there
- 23:58she's super successful and you know they still
- 24:00have this complicated history with her and they
- 24:04still kind of have ways of interacting and like
- 24:06poking at each other and like attacking each
- 24:08other even though mordecai's still in the dungeon
- 24:11Right. And they get the newsletters that talk
- 24:14about things happening in the dungeon and outside
- 24:15the dungeon. So there is a lot of value in being
- 24:19a game guide. And for Porthas, I think his real
- 24:22motivation here was his drive to give back, to
- 24:26do more and to help future generations of crawlers.
- 24:30So he does that in the dungeon. He does that
- 24:32through the cookbook. And then he continues doing
- 24:34that after he leaves the dungeon. But I think
- 24:38it is smarter because like if you're an NPC who's
- 24:40just like guarding a castle, like you don't know
- 24:42anything. And like, I don't think you're interacting
- 24:45with anyone. Like, I don't think you have any
- 24:47chance to like build that network or like build
- 24:49that base of information. No, I mean, that sounds
- 24:51incredibly boring compared to being a game guide.
- 24:54Like being a game guide seems kind of fun, honestly.
- 24:57I mean, I think in most cases with what we see
- 25:00with Mordecai, like they kind of have this expectation.
- 25:03that they're going to be helping you out for
- 25:05the first couple floors. And then after that,
- 25:06they're done for the season. But you know what
- 25:08happens with Mordecai, they get the child actor
- 25:11perk or class that Jonah takes where he follows
- 25:14them forever. And he's pretty pissed off about
- 25:16that at first. So Horthis knew immediately that
- 25:20when he left the dungeon, he had plans to take
- 25:23down the crawl. And he starts the open intellect
- 25:26pacifist network. Well, and I think that's interesting
- 25:30because I think Carl views that he has to be
- 25:33in the dungeon and has to be actively fighting
- 25:37to be making an impact or to be changing things.
- 25:41And I don't think that point of view changes
- 25:44too much throughout this book, but it'll be interesting
- 25:46to see if it does later on. Quite probably. One
- 25:49of the last things that we wanted to talk about
- 25:51is his lawyer gives him the option to take a
- 25:54couple of pre -collapse items and some small
- 25:56trinkets from his inventory. No weapons or anything
- 25:59like that. Brie, what was the note you made about
- 26:01this? Basically, they act like this is the most
- 26:05magnanimous thing that they've ever done. And
- 26:07they're like, oh, well, it's a goodwill gesture
- 26:10from us. We want you to have these things because
- 26:13we know it's important. And it's like, okay,
- 26:17that's what you guys are doing because you're
- 26:19so nice. So benevolent. Yeah, you can have like,
- 26:23I don't know, your favorite hat from the crawl,
- 26:26which would be very important to Donut. I cannot
- 26:29imagine her leaving without her tiara. What I
- 26:33found interesting with this, though, is this
- 26:35gives you the context of why and how Mordecai
- 26:39has his mother's ashes and has a picture of his
- 26:42brother. And so while this is kind of like, oh,
- 26:46we're so nice. Look at how amazing we're being
- 26:48to you and letting you have these things. For
- 26:51Mordecai, that is extremely important, him being
- 26:53able to have his mother's ashes with him. And
- 26:55also we see it with some crawlers, but we don't
- 26:58really see it that much of like sentimental items
- 27:00that crawlers bring into the dungeon with them.
- 27:03I think the most prominent example that we see
- 27:06of this in the series is actually the ring that
- 27:08Quan CH brings into the dungeon with him. And
- 27:11when Carl kills him in the Eye of the Bedlam
- 27:15Bride, he asked Carl to give it back to him in
- 27:18the ring. reads on the inside for daddy and despite
- 27:21Kwan being such a terrible person in the dungeon
- 27:24you know he says my daughter would be ashamed
- 27:26of what I'd become and it's pretty gut -wrenching
- 27:29despite him kind of deserving what happened so
- 27:32when I did my first read -through of the book
- 27:35I was so excited by this chapter. I was so excited
- 27:40that there was going to be multiple points of
- 27:41view going forward. I was extremely excited that
- 27:45it gave the recap at the end that was like, this
- 27:47is what his level was when he finished and this
- 27:50is where he is now. Because I could tell from
- 27:54this chapter that they were going to have other
- 27:58chapters from other former crawlers. And I viewed
- 28:01that as a game changer and I was so excited about
- 28:03it. Yeah, getting to have chapters from other
- 28:05crawlers outside of just their excerpts from
- 28:07the cookbook is extremely valuable and insightful
- 28:11that we see going out throughout this inevitable
- 28:13ruin. And at the end of this chapter, it also
- 28:16tells you that he is missing and wanted by syndicate
- 28:20security, which is a little bit of a teaser for
- 28:23what's to come. Because even at this point in
- 28:27the books, we still know next to nothing about
- 28:31Porthis. Or what the Open Intellect Pacifist
- 28:34Network is really doing. Definitely. But I was
- 28:38just so excited when I read this chapter because
- 28:40I knew that book seven was going to be different
- 28:42than the other books. And I really liked the
- 28:44direction it was going in. Absolutely. Inevitable
- 28:47Ruin does not disappoint. We get some amazing
