Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My guest is Julius Tennon. He's a coach, president and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Juvie Productions, which he founded with his wife, Viola Davis.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Julius and accomplished film, television and theater. Veteran actor which
- 0:11Speaker 1: I didn't know all I knew it was a producer.
- 0:13Speaker 1: So I reading this biom just I'm learning so much.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But we're gonna learn a lot to buy them on
- 0:17Speaker 1: this show, but spiling all the stuff I did know.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Producing with over thirty years of experience, ju v A
- 0:23Speaker 1: cree scripted and non scripted television, film, documentaries, theater and
- 0:27Speaker 1: digital immersive content for global audiences. The company currently has
- 0:31Speaker 1: the first look feature production deal with Amazon Studios on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the film side, as well as an overall development deal
- 0:38Speaker 1: with ABC Studios and ABC Signature Studios. Were broadcast, cable,
- 0:42Speaker 1: streaming and digital platforms. Please working with the Money Making
- 0:45Speaker 1: Conversations Masterclass, the one and only Julius Tennan. How are
- 0:48Speaker 1: you doing, sir um del I'm doing good. Rashan, thank
- 0:52Speaker 1: you so much. And let me just say the ABC
- 0:54Speaker 1: deal we had, we went to Amazon. We let that
- 0:58Speaker 1: deal after four years and we went to Amazon for
- 1:00Speaker 1: a couple of years and we've developed quite a robust
- 1:04Speaker 1: roster of things, but mandate changed and all those kinds
- 1:07Speaker 1: of things. So right now we're in the throes of
- 1:10Speaker 1: finding a new deal and we have a bunch of
- 1:12Speaker 1: h we have a bunch of fish biting. Yeah, so
- 1:15Speaker 1: we're gonna have a new deal here shortly. But I
- 1:18Speaker 1: run at ABC was certainly amazing and uh, and we
- 1:22Speaker 1: really appreciated being in that deal given the violin was
- 1:25Speaker 1: doing How to Get Away with Murder at the time,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and so it uh really voted well and we did. Uh.
- 1:30Speaker 1: We did a lot of things, got a lot of
- 1:32Speaker 1: things out there, so it set us up to where
- 1:34Speaker 1: we already did. Well. You know something, Julius, and thank
- 1:36Speaker 1: you for taking the time to come on the show
- 1:37Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, I always realized
- 1:40Speaker 1: that two people and the process of getting success the
- 1:43Speaker 1: person in the front of the camera and the person
- 1:45Speaker 1: behind the camera. And you guys are doing something beautiful
- 1:48Speaker 1: here success behind the camera, which I categorize as you
- 1:52Speaker 1: and her success in front of the camera, not saying
- 1:54Speaker 1: she don't do stuff behind the camera, but that relationship.
- 1:57Speaker 1: How does it make Juvie Productions unique? Well, what you
- 2:01Speaker 1: know for us, what makes you v Production Unique is
- 2:04Speaker 1: the brand we have, and the brand is Viola Davis.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I mean, and I've really uh
- 2:12Speaker 1: take that, uh really seriously, because Viola is somebody who's
- 2:17Speaker 1: very committed to her craft, and uh, we're always looking
- 2:21Speaker 1: for prestige, elevated content. I always think anything that we're developing,
- 2:27Speaker 1: what Viola Davis do this? And if that answer is yes,
- 2:31Speaker 1: then we know we know we're going the right direction.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Because the company was founded to uh boast of Viola's career,
- 2:39Speaker 1: because when you look at Hollywood and and the pipeline,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the general pipeline of Hollywood gets a little thin. There's
- 2:45Speaker 1: not a lot of good content out there. And so
- 2:47Speaker 1: after her Oscar nomination for The Help in twos ten,
- 2:51Speaker 1: we decided we need to take the ball about a
- 2:53Speaker 1: horn and we need to create content for uh for
- 2:56Speaker 1: an actor consumman of Viola's talent, so that we could
- 3:00Speaker 1: tell the kind of stories that she wanted to tell
- 3:03Speaker 1: and she could step into the kind of character she
- 3:05Speaker 1: wanted to step into. And so it was that thing initially,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but then beyond that, Rashaan, it became this thing where
- 3:12Speaker 1: we said, you know, bioa can't consume all this content.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So what we want to do, we want to be
- 3:17Speaker 1: a voice to the voices. We want to put our
- 3:19Speaker 1: foot in the door, open it and then allow talented
- 3:23Speaker 1: people of color, Black, Asian, Mexican, you name that, Indian, whatever.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So that became the driving goals so that we could
- 3:34Speaker 1: start filling a pipeline that's really thin. Um and so uh,
- 3:40Speaker 1: that's kind of been I that's been our north star.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And then obviously not just looking at the US, but
- 3:45Speaker 1: also international because now that's a whole different play now,
- 3:49Speaker 1: that whole that whole misnomer about black content won't travel.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That's changed in this day, you know, because of analytics,
- 3:57Speaker 1: because of streaming, because of everything. And so man, this
- 4:00Speaker 1: is a unique opportunity right now, man to do some
- 4:03Speaker 1: to do some stuff in the world. You know the
- 4:04Speaker 1: thing about I'm glad you brought up streaming because streaming
- 4:06Speaker 1: to me, as far as African American content is the
- 4:09Speaker 1: game changing because it's international. I always look at Netflix
- 4:13Speaker 1: and you know they're in a hundred ninety countries, so
- 4:15Speaker 1: or the product premiers there. Because you know, as ourself,
- 4:18Speaker 1: when you go into the movie game, it was a
- 4:20Speaker 1: black lead or black concept. It was only gonna stage
- 4:23Speaker 1: the domestic it was, they weren't even try to. But
- 4:27Speaker 1: they might take the London, they might take it to
- 4:29Speaker 1: the Caribbeans and the African States. But that's it. And
- 4:32Speaker 1: so but streaming talk to us. Our streaming is really
- 4:35Speaker 1: allowed the black genre from a from a standpoint of
- 4:39Speaker 1: content to be exposed internationally. Now, well, I mean I
- 4:43Speaker 1: think listen, I think people of color are calling for
- 4:46Speaker 1: this kind of content. We deserve to have more of
- 4:49Speaker 1: our stories told. We need to be seen in a
- 4:52Speaker 1: positive light and we're not interested in trokes and stereotypes.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And streaming allows you now because they can do analytics
- 5:00Speaker 1: around it, so they know what can play in different
- 5:04Speaker 1: regions and so you know, you can take advantage of
- 5:07Speaker 1: that because what I found traveling in the nationally is
- 5:10Speaker 1: that audiences are just starving for this content. So it's
- 5:15Speaker 1: an exciting time, you know, and like TV, I mean,
- 5:17Speaker 1: there's so much stuff on TV you can hardly keep up.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But you know, it's it's really a good thing because
- 5:23Speaker 1: it allows more opportunities in front and behind the camera.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And so, um, I mean, you can't quantify how awesome
- 5:32Speaker 1: uh streaming is now and how all companies are looking
- 5:36Speaker 1: at that model the US, but certainly now standing out
- 5:41Speaker 1: across the globe. So that makes it that much more exciting.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And then where African American actors and actors of color
- 5:47Speaker 1: haven't been known, they finally started getting an opportunity to
- 5:52Speaker 1: be known on a global scale, right, you know that
- 5:55Speaker 1: I keep going back to that global you know, like
- 5:57Speaker 1: I number Steve Harran, that was way back on the
- 6:00Speaker 1: w B, you know, was that the world was just
- 6:03Speaker 1: so small, you know, but we were reaching success but
- 6:06Speaker 1: to a chosen few people. And now you look at
- 6:10Speaker 1: what's happening now internationally global content. But then when you
- 6:15Speaker 1: try to diversify, that's the key. When you were talking
- 6:17Speaker 1: about diversify, you see, people started getting mad when I
- 6:21Speaker 1: talk about casting. When we talk about the House of
- 6:23Speaker 1: the Dragon, Lord of the Rings. You know, your wife
- 6:27Speaker 1: there and you're there, man, just from your standpoint, isn't
- 6:31Speaker 1: annoyance because you know you can you can. This is
- 6:34Speaker 1: this is in real life characters, this faith, this fantasy
- 6:38Speaker 1: and they're made. Uh huh. I always chilled my staff
- 6:44Speaker 1: that what we'll do is hard. When you want parody
- 6:47Speaker 1: and you want equity, listen, we could be We're fourteen
- 6:50Speaker 1: percent of the population. But that don't mean I want
- 6:52Speaker 1: fourteen percent of the pie as much of that pie
- 6:56Speaker 1: as I can here and I think and that goes
- 7:00Speaker 1: without saying without content. And I always always always tell
- 7:05Speaker 1: my staff and and and film, TV and immersing and
- 7:08Speaker 1: interactive that what we do is hard. But you have
- 7:14Speaker 1: to stay focused. You have to stay on the case
- 7:18Speaker 1: and your material that you're developing is gonna stand on
- 7:23Speaker 1: its own when you put the work in, you find
- 7:26Speaker 1: the right partners. I liken it Rashaun to a baby.
- 7:30Speaker 1: The project is a baby, and then how are we
- 7:32Speaker 1: gonna when this baby is born? When this when we're
- 7:35Speaker 1: starting to birth this baby, how are we going to
- 7:38Speaker 1: take care of it as a group so we can
- 7:40Speaker 1: take it out to the town and then uh sell
- 7:43Speaker 1: it and then have success because we've throught it, thought
- 7:46Speaker 1: it through. But even if you think it through, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: with these shows, you just don't know what's gonna happen.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You do the best you can. You put it out there,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and then you try to nurture it so that it lasts,
- 7:55Speaker 1: because that's the only way you can. You know, from
- 7:57Speaker 1: a financial standpoint, you gotta get shows this, particularly with TV,
- 8:01Speaker 1: and you want them to have longevity because when they're
- 8:04Speaker 1: having longevity, then more money is coming into the production
- 8:08Speaker 1: company based on the deal that you and so that's
- 8:13Speaker 1: the that's always the goal. The goal initially is just
- 8:16Speaker 1: to get it to somebody who loves it and they
- 8:18Speaker 1: say we want to green light it, because it's not
- 8:21Speaker 1: enough to say they take it off the table and
- 8:24Speaker 1: they buy it. But if you don't get it green
- 8:26Speaker 1: let then no revenue is coming in. N you know
- 8:30Speaker 1: your deal because when you're doing your deal, your deal
- 8:33Speaker 1: says they're giving you the deal so you can bring
- 8:36Speaker 1: content to them that could potentially uh be exposed to
- 8:40Speaker 1: a global audience. We'll be right back with more Money
- 8:44Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to
- 8:50Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald speaking to Julius Tendant.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He's the co president of ju V Productions, which he
- 8:59Speaker 1: found it was his life for all of Davis. You
- 9:01Speaker 1: won't go step up back and step a little bit
- 9:03Speaker 1: about you, you know, because of the fact that we're
- 9:05Speaker 1: born in Austin, Texas football player, went to the University
- 9:09Speaker 1: of Tulsa and then there when did the acting bug
- 9:14Speaker 1: coming to your life? Because you know, you know, when
- 9:16Speaker 1: your football player you get a scholarship, you focused on
- 9:18Speaker 1: being a football player. You know, you just don't get
- 9:20Speaker 1: a scholarship at a school like the University of Tulsa
- 9:23Speaker 1: because they like you. You had to be good at
- 9:25Speaker 1: what you do. And you know, Texas, I'm born and
- 9:28Speaker 1: raised in Houston, Texas. I know football is king here.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So how did you go football star? University of Tulsa
- 9:37Speaker 1: acting because you're the first African American to graduate from
- 9:41Speaker 1: Tulsa School of Theater. That's right, that's right. Well, listen, man.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It was one of those things that started when I
- 9:48Speaker 1: was in junior high school. And it literally started with
- 9:50Speaker 1: pros and poetry because I'm I'm a poetry recitator. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: still recitative poetry to this day. And then off of that,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I started doing a lot of behind the scenes were
- 10:00Speaker 1: and then uh, and then I started to have a
- 10:03Speaker 1: thirst to kind of want to be up there because
- 10:05Speaker 1: looking at my friends do it, and I said, well,
- 10:07Speaker 1: thank I can you know. So it started in junior
- 10:12Speaker 1: high school and then I just I just stayed with it.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I stayed with it even when I played. When I
- 10:16Speaker 1: got to Tulsa, I was a foot. I was a
- 10:18Speaker 1: theater major, and like I said, and as you just
- 10:21Speaker 1: uh so eloquently pointed out, I'm the first African American
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the history of the University of Tulsa to graduate
- 10:27Speaker 1: from the theater program there, and so it was just
- 10:29Speaker 1: kind of always a natural thing with me. Uh And
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, and I'm still I called myself producer actor
- 10:35Speaker 1: now because I still act here and there. I saw you,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I saw you, I saw you. My producing is, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: is the thing that's in front. But I still take
- 10:48Speaker 1: a little choice things here there. And so I'm in
- 10:50Speaker 1: I'm in a really great position. And now with everything
- 10:53Speaker 1: that's going on with streaming, I can play all kinds
- 10:56Speaker 1: of different things and and now I can wait for
- 10:58Speaker 1: the quality of things to come because my career has
- 11:00Speaker 1: changed now and that whole quest to want to be
- 11:02Speaker 1: a star, which I think all of us that get
- 11:05Speaker 1: into it initially though, you know, I want to be
- 11:07Speaker 1: a star, but it's not so much about being a start.
- 11:09Speaker 1: That is just being a working actor. And I think
- 11:11Speaker 1: that's the goal that you should always strive for, just
- 11:14Speaker 1: to be a working actor. And then let de pundance
- 11:17Speaker 1: and let everybody else say who you are. How great
- 11:19Speaker 1: you are. Whatever, it's just about working. And so that's
- 11:23Speaker 1: kind of always been my mantra is just work, if
- 11:26Speaker 1: it comes, if it's right, just do it. And now
- 11:28Speaker 1: we're producing, and we're producing the kind of content, uh,
- 11:31Speaker 1: for people of color across the diaspora, and and and
- 11:35Speaker 1: and and and and and beyond um that can affect
- 11:38Speaker 1: people's lives. Then those human stories. So that's become the thing.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But man, I've always loved acting, and uh, and I'm
- 11:45Speaker 1: going to continue to do it. Here's an interesting thing
- 11:47Speaker 1: about just hearing your transition. You know, like I've said,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, I would love talking to people like you, Julius,
- 11:53Speaker 1: because you know you've done so much. You just blow
- 11:56Speaker 1: through the whole arc you know, like, well, you know
- 11:59Speaker 1: I've thought in junior high and there, you know, I
- 12:01Speaker 1: like poetry and then I went to what you're told.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So at first black and graduating theater and boot I'm
- 12:06Speaker 1: here now. Now, now you're not gonna do my audience
- 12:09Speaker 1: like that, because that's why you're impressive to me, because
- 12:13Speaker 1: we always because of the fact that you know, you
- 12:16Speaker 1: walk in the room, you know you're the only one
- 12:18Speaker 1: in there that's right. You know what I'm saying that,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and we're tossing on Oklahoma. I'm from Texas, I know Oklahoma, Okay,
- 12:25Speaker 1: And so because I always that's always look at people going, well,
- 12:28Speaker 1: you know, just racism exists, Hey, yeah, hey, yeah, it exists.
- 12:32Speaker 1: You know every time I walk in the room and
- 12:33Speaker 1: they know who I am. Okay, that's the difference maker. So,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but that didn't stop you from pursuing your dream because
- 12:41Speaker 1: of the fact that, again, Hollywood can be so far away,
- 12:44Speaker 1: Broadway can be so far away. When did you believe
- 12:47Speaker 1: this could be, could be something that you felt you
- 12:50Speaker 1: could do. Well, you know what, you know, I think listen, Rashan,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think that you know, you always have a you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I always had a desire, I should say, to be successful.
- 13:02Speaker 1: My mom used to always say, how came you so
- 13:04Speaker 1: different from your other brothers and sisters? And I used
- 13:06Speaker 1: to say, well, I'm not any different. I just kind
- 13:08Speaker 1: of I'm looking at the given circumstance. I gotta know
- 13:12Speaker 1: what i want to do, and I'm not seeing that reflected.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And so I'm just gonna stay focused and stay on
- 13:19Speaker 1: the task and just keep moving forward one step at
- 13:23Speaker 1: a time. And then obviously, you know, all these years.
- 13:27Speaker 1: After being in l A for several years, then I
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, then I finally meet by Ola Davis. We
- 13:32Speaker 1: meet on the city of Angels uh. And then after
- 13:35Speaker 1: that we have this wonderful friendship that becomes this relationship
- 13:40Speaker 1: by all of my best friends. Uh. So we support
- 13:43Speaker 1: each other tremendously, but it became that thing. Uh. And
- 13:48Speaker 1: then that's how kind of the producing thing came in
- 13:51Speaker 1: because then I gotta take care of this immense talent.
- 13:56Speaker 1: And like when you when you're when you're in my position,
- 14:00Speaker 1: my wife knows who I am, so I have to
- 14:03Speaker 1: know who I am so that way I can take
- 14:06Speaker 1: care of her properly and then not feel diminished. I
- 14:09Speaker 1: think you only diminish yourself if you don't know who
- 14:13Speaker 1: you are, because if you don't know who you are,
- 14:15Speaker 1: certainly your woman's gonna know you don't know who you are.
- 14:19Speaker 1: And that hasn't been our case. And my wife is
- 14:22Speaker 1: always saying, you know, you're a hell of actor. You
- 14:24Speaker 1: need to you should just be acting. So I know what,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'll take some choice stuff here there, but uh, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm running a company. I got nine employees. Bust myself
- 14:34Speaker 1: and then whenever she's in helping out when she's got
- 14:37Speaker 1: some breaks. That's that's it. But you know, I think Rashan,
- 14:40Speaker 1: you always it's a balance. You always have to know
- 14:44Speaker 1: when to hold him and win the fold them right.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is that you gotta know, hey, listen, uh,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I can't go away. I can't get a series regularly,
- 14:54Speaker 1: something to be going six months from the from the company,
- 14:56Speaker 1: right because well, because what I do for the company,
- 15:00Speaker 1: nobody else can do that. But I don't want to
- 15:03Speaker 1: run film, I don't want to run TV. I don't
- 15:06Speaker 1: want to run immersive and interactive UM. But I need
- 15:10Speaker 1: to be there because what I do and what I
- 15:13Speaker 1: bring is the passion of the company, the vision of
- 15:15Speaker 1: the company, and then I can set my guys up
- 15:18Speaker 1: for success. And so that's what I do. I'm not
- 15:22Speaker 1: a micro manager, but I believe in my folks and
- 15:25Speaker 1: then I give them the reins because if you're not
- 15:27Speaker 1: doing your job, I know you're not doing your job,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and we're gonna have a conversation. But when you're doing
- 15:32Speaker 1: what you're supposed to do, there's no lord and over you.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Let's go do this, Let's go get this for our people.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And so that's that's how we roll. That's how I roll,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and uh and it's and it's worked really beautiful because listen,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you're getting more sugar by giving things away than Lord
- 15:48Speaker 1: and over people are making them feel like crap and um.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So you know, that's kind of been another thing that
- 15:55Speaker 1: just the way I do business right about titles. I
- 15:59Speaker 1: haven't eat go, but I don't have an ego that
- 16:01Speaker 1: prevents me from allowing other people to shine cool and
- 16:04Speaker 1: you listen, you know, I I really, you know, I
- 16:07Speaker 1: want of those guys. I'm in a position that I
- 16:08Speaker 1: don't really go to movie theaters. I really don't, you know,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, they go either gonna come to my house
- 16:14Speaker 1: because I'm I'm a voter, you know, arius academies, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: so I'm gonna get the movie I don't want to
- 16:20Speaker 1: see at my house. Now. When the woman king, I
- 16:23Speaker 1: looked at my daughter, look at my wife. I said,
- 16:25Speaker 1: we're gonna. I said, we're gonna. We're gonna, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: And we were going because first of all, I support
- 16:33Speaker 1: my friends and I consider you a friend. And secondly,
- 16:38Speaker 1: you know Gina, who I love to death, as well
- 16:41Speaker 1: as the director. So there's a lot of pluses to this.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And when I walked in there, you know my my daughter,
- 16:48Speaker 1: she's twenty five, my wife by my age, and uh,
- 16:52Speaker 1: just wonderful production, Just wonderful storytelling about who we are.
- 16:56Speaker 1: How does one take a movie project like that, which
- 16:59Speaker 1: is an idea and take it to get it to
- 17:02Speaker 1: the fort, to get it to the big screen. How
- 17:04Speaker 1: does that process work? Let me tell you something, rich Shawn.
- 17:08Speaker 1: You're telling the story to Hollywood that's never been told before,
- 17:12Speaker 1: where you more dark skin and women being the lead.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And then all of these other black black people whether
- 17:21Speaker 1: they didn't have to depend on any white savior to
- 17:25Speaker 1: save them or do this. This was their world and
- 17:27Speaker 1: they had they did what they can and loaded a film.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Get in the film like this took us seven years.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And what I always say, and I say this to
- 17:36Speaker 1: my staff too, this right here, big ce courage. Courage
- 17:44Speaker 1: when you're doing something that's out of the box, that
- 17:46Speaker 1: hasn't been done in Hollywood before, and then you have
- 17:48Speaker 1: to go out there knowing you have a great product,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and then you have to find the right partners and
- 17:54Speaker 1: it might take a minute, but if you believe in
- 17:57Speaker 1: that thing, then you have to stick with it and
- 18:00Speaker 1: that's what we did, and then we got some some
- 18:02Speaker 1: champions of the project over the over the course of
- 18:05Speaker 1: those seven years. And then finally, uh, you know, Sony
- 18:09Speaker 1: saw the value in this story. But trust me, it
- 18:14Speaker 1: was a fight. There was a fight for the budget.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It is a fight for the way the hair looks,
- 18:18Speaker 1: as a fight for makeup, is a fight for everything.
- 18:21Speaker 1: But we know you have something that's that's incredible and undeniable,
- 18:27Speaker 1: then you just stick with it. And that's what we
- 18:30Speaker 1: did because we knew that this story needed to get
- 18:33Speaker 1: out in the world, and we know we knew that
- 18:37Speaker 1: Hollywood has never done anything like this. So we're so proud.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And I'm so proud of all those women because here
- 18:42Speaker 1: I am, I'm I'm the one of the one the
- 18:47Speaker 1: only black man who was on that set. And seeing
- 18:50Speaker 1: these women execute at the highest level just absolutely and awesome,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, to the cinematographer, to the first aided to uh,
- 19:01Speaker 1: to Terry lanshropture, a genus editor. I mean, man, women
- 19:07Speaker 1: have a footprint all over this thing. Man. And I
- 19:09Speaker 1: was there to support my sisters, and I was there
- 19:12Speaker 1: to support my brothers and sisters in Africa because you know,
- 19:14Speaker 1: they don't have a union there. And then and then
- 19:18Speaker 1: when you're in South Africa and you're shooting a movie
- 19:20Speaker 1: like this, folks aren't used to seeing the black man
- 19:23Speaker 1: have a voice. Yeah, I'm the I'm the producer of
- 19:26Speaker 1: this movie, so I voice and and my big thing
- 19:30Speaker 1: for me, I'm the conflict of resolution dude that can
- 19:34Speaker 1: talk to anybody. Because at the end of the day,
- 19:36Speaker 1: when that camera, when that camera turns on, then you
- 19:38Speaker 1: got a day to get you gotta with it. When
- 19:41Speaker 1: that green light comes on, you gotta you gotta get it, man,
- 19:44Speaker 1: because money is on the line. And so when things
- 19:46Speaker 1: are out of order, then you gotta kind of try
- 19:49Speaker 1: to put it in order and in a way that's
- 19:52Speaker 1: human and humane and uh, trying to figure out what's
- 19:55Speaker 1: what's happening, what's going on, resolve it and then let's
- 19:59Speaker 1: get on with I did, and I believe in thanking everybody,
- 20:02Speaker 1: from the guy that's king the toilets during COVID when
- 20:05Speaker 1: we were there, to the guy pulling cords. Everybody is
- 20:09Speaker 1: important and so for me, I'm always gonna be that
- 20:13Speaker 1: producer that's gonna always appreciate the whole and try to
- 20:18Speaker 1: bring levity and try to lift people up when they're
- 20:21Speaker 1: feeling like it's not happening. My actors sometimes Gina was
- 20:25Speaker 1: feeling like and I was always saying, no, sister, you
- 20:27Speaker 1: got this. I'll tell my actors. You know what. I
- 20:30Speaker 1: know it's hard and you're looking good. Is hanging there?
- 20:33Speaker 1: You you're doing it, you know, because sometimes you just
- 20:35Speaker 1: need that. You need to hear a voice saying that
- 20:39Speaker 1: and so um that's you know, That's kind of the
- 20:43Speaker 1: way I operate. We'll be right back with more Money
- 20:46Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to
- 20:52Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. If you haven't
- 20:57Speaker 1: seen The Woman King, The Woman King is available for
- 20:59Speaker 1: pre order and now it's available to watch at home
- 21:01Speaker 1: on Digital v O. D Uh definitely. I always tell
- 21:04Speaker 1: my friends or anybody who calls the show, send me
- 21:07Speaker 1: a banner, because you know me. You know you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know I posed, brother, you know I posed, now,
- 21:12Speaker 1: so send me a bad people react to me when
- 21:14Speaker 1: I posed, So send me a banner so I can
- 21:16Speaker 1: get the word out about this. Because I didn't get
- 21:18Speaker 1: up know about this until I did my bio research
- 21:21Speaker 1: on you. There's money to be made on the v
- 21:24Speaker 1: O D and the and the pre sayer, So you
- 21:27Speaker 1: get that banner to me, man, I would put this
- 21:29Speaker 1: all in my social media, like I said, my whole
- 21:31Speaker 1: thing in my relationship with any especially people of color.
- 21:35Speaker 1: You guys are difference makers, and U you know you
- 21:38Speaker 1: you'd be grinding so hard and violently acting so hard.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Y'all don't realize you when you're when you when the
- 21:43Speaker 1: cover polls back, we just looked back and awe. The
- 21:46Speaker 1: same thing with the woman King because the woman King,
- 21:50Speaker 1: I went there because we saw a black panther. Black
- 21:52Speaker 1: panther was a fantasy, and it's till it's a great
- 21:54Speaker 1: fantasy for black women are powerful. This is reality. It's
- 22:00Speaker 1: just that story. Is why I said, you know some honey,
- 22:04Speaker 1: my daughter, we're going right now. The first first, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 1: give me a reserve to see, give me some popcorn.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Your ball going in. And that's why Peter told you, brother,
- 22:14Speaker 1: don't worry about this. This part of the horse is
- 22:17Speaker 1: riding your way. And I posted everywhere, so I just
- 22:21Speaker 1: had to let you know that. Man. I know we
- 22:23Speaker 1: hadn't talked to a long time man, but I'd let
- 22:25Speaker 1: you know, brother, look you're bo over here. Don't worry
- 22:27Speaker 1: about this, brother, You got a great project. And that's
- 22:30Speaker 1: the part of the grind we all need to hear,
- 22:33Speaker 1: because sometimes people those slings and arrows and you don't
- 22:36Speaker 1: know why. And because of the fact when you raise
- 22:38Speaker 1: your head up, do you have the dunk now on
- 22:40Speaker 1: a great project? Key to understand what goes into And
- 22:44Speaker 1: then a lot of times when you see the finished project,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know all the battles and all the things that
- 22:50Speaker 1: happened before this movement came to life. And it's the
- 22:55Speaker 1: hard work. And it was a very hard shoot. And
- 22:58Speaker 1: we ended up having COVID with to shut down for
- 23:00Speaker 1: a while for a little over three week three weeks
- 23:03Speaker 1: of a couple of days, and then we came back
- 23:06Speaker 1: to the task and then we got the film done.
- 23:08Speaker 1: But you know, there's all kinds of things that are
- 23:10Speaker 1: going on when you're in production, so many moving parts,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and you just kind of want to keep the train,
- 23:16Speaker 1: as I said, keep the train on the tracks, and
- 23:19Speaker 1: let's get or done. And that's that's what we did,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know, And and and because we knew the importance, everybody,
- 23:25Speaker 1: everybody and on this film understood the importance of this film,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and we didn't want to disappoint. We wanted to deliver
- 23:32Speaker 1: something that would have everything that that speaks to the
- 23:36Speaker 1: human spirit. You know, everything is in this movie. So
- 23:40Speaker 1: that's why viscerally you're getting these gasps and lass and pride. Right,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you just feel like, God, damn, this is us. If
- 23:52Speaker 1: we could come together like that, please we could. You know,
- 23:57Speaker 1: it's no limit to what we can do you And
- 24:00Speaker 1: so that was that was the whole idea. Everybody knew
- 24:05Speaker 1: how important it wasn't we when got it, but it
- 24:07Speaker 1: was important as well. As we closed this interview, thank
- 24:10Speaker 1: you for giving you the time to interview Julius Um.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Methods that help you win? I always like to ask
- 24:16Speaker 1: people who would like you because you you you said
- 24:19Speaker 1: a little bitter, but just to hear but have my audience,
- 24:22Speaker 1: what are some of the methods that help you win? Well?
- 24:26Speaker 1: You know what. One of the things is that you know,
- 24:30Speaker 1: you have to know who you are, You have to
- 24:33Speaker 1: know what it is you want to put into the world,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and then you have to be dedicated to do the
- 24:40Speaker 1: hard work to make it happen. Because it's only on
- 24:43Speaker 1: the other side of hard work that the success that
- 24:46Speaker 1: the money's gonna come, and so in our business it
- 24:50Speaker 1: can be really kind of fickle. But you have to
- 24:53Speaker 1: stay you have to stay focused, and you have to
- 24:56Speaker 1: know what it is you want to do, and then
- 24:59Speaker 1: you have to have the courage and sammon to do
- 25:04Speaker 1: it because in our business, sometimes to take seven years
- 25:07Speaker 1: for this one, sometimes take years. Right, you believe in
- 25:11Speaker 1: it and you stick with it, good things happen. Cool.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Every Wednesday, I have a newsletter goes out to six
- 25:16Speaker 1: or six thousand people, have an open rate of thirty
- 25:19Speaker 1: seven percent. Send me that badder brother second dropping in
- 25:22Speaker 1: there so I can put it on model million followers.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I put it on my linked in account. Hey, but
- 25:27Speaker 1: I can only accept and support greatness and what you
- 25:30Speaker 1: and fol it doing man, not only inspires me and
- 25:33Speaker 1: also younger people. I'm pretty sure people have walked up
- 25:36Speaker 1: to you and go, you know you I spoke to
- 25:38Speaker 1: you several years ago when I was just an assistant
- 25:41Speaker 1: or I was doing security, or you go huh, and
- 25:44Speaker 1: you know, because you're doing it, brother, I know, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: know it's happened to you, do I know it just
- 25:48Speaker 1: trips you out. It happens to me. I go, I
- 25:51Speaker 1: go okay, man, and they said, you know, you're the
- 25:54Speaker 1: only producer eppisode that was Black Owners set or executive producer.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Black Owners said there was a man, man, that's that's
- 26:01Speaker 1: why I just gotta called tip my hat. Brother. Let
- 26:03Speaker 1: you know I'm tipping my hat and said thank you.
- 26:05Speaker 1: We're at the front line. You're a little bit further
- 26:08Speaker 1: front than me, but I love it, man, and I'm
- 26:10Speaker 1: gonna support you. So get those batties to you. Know what, brother, though,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna pull you up. I'm gonna throw you the
- 26:14Speaker 1: rule and I'm gonna pull you right up with you.
- 26:16Speaker 1: We're gonna we're gonna keep doing this together. That's what
- 26:19Speaker 1: we have to do. We gotta pull each other up.
- 26:21Speaker 1: We gotta believe in who we are and then we
- 26:23Speaker 1: have to support one another. Julius, thank you for the time. Man.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Get those batteries to me. Man. I love your brother.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Smile is fantastic and any time you need me on
