- 1:24Speaker 1: to money making conversations, my leak till. How you doing that?
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm good? How are you good? That's said your name
- 1:34Speaker 1: correctly and you were close. It's my leak. But that's no, no, no, no,
- 1:39Speaker 1: no no, Ruth Shawn McDonald. You know I'm saying if
- 1:42Speaker 1: people call me Russian a rock, you know, I said, hey, hey, hey,
- 1:47Speaker 1: look at say my name right, because that's part of
- 1:49Speaker 1: your brain, you know when you because you're gonna be
- 1:52Speaker 1: introduced in front of ten thousand people, when somebody say myla,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you know what you wanta do? An You're gonna You're
- 1:57Speaker 1: gonna go change the way you walk. It's going to
- 2:00Speaker 1: change where you speak because you have to correct. Everybody
- 2:03Speaker 1: gonna throw your whole game plan all. So say your
- 2:06Speaker 1: name again, correctly for everybody to here, and Roushan will
- 2:10Speaker 1: get it right from now on. It is my leak
- 2:13Speaker 1: till mine with emphasis on my my exactly great girl box. Yes, girl,
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. I'm tell you something that's
- 2:25Speaker 1: a visionary move to create a monthly subscription service. You
- 2:29Speaker 1: know that, right? Yeah. I think in my naivete I
- 2:34Speaker 1: created it, not knowing how difficult it would be. But
- 2:37Speaker 1: I mean now that it's done, it's amazing. Okay, cool,
- 2:42Speaker 1: two things happening. When did you launch it? Okay, because
- 2:45Speaker 1: that's a launch, and then there's worked to the launch correct? Correct? Okay? Cool?
- 2:50Speaker 1: When did you launch you? When did you launch? I
- 2:53Speaker 1: did a soft launch November twenty eleven, so I had
- 2:57Speaker 1: no products, no boxes, and I said, you know what
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm going to I send out a press release to
- 3:02Speaker 1: Essence magazine and I said, I'm gonna have them, Yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna have them put this out online. So they
- 3:12Speaker 1: released it at eight o'clock online about this new business
- 3:15Speaker 1: in this new company that was going to be opening
- 3:17Speaker 1: at midnight. And I said, Okay, if I get enough
- 3:20Speaker 1: people find up, I'll continue if I don't out quit.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And I think we had a thousand people sign up
- 3:27Speaker 1: like the first hour after midnight, and they just kept
- 3:30Speaker 1: going by the thousand. So then I said, oh, shoot,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I gotta but we're gonna work at for radio purpose,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you right, I said, Now I gotta get some products
- 3:40Speaker 1: and some boxes because I think people want this. Now
- 3:45Speaker 1: here's the it's the fun part about it, because see
- 3:47Speaker 1: this is an idea. How many people told you you
- 3:50Speaker 1: were crazy? Oh my god. Everybody everybody was like, how
- 3:54Speaker 1: are you gonna do this? You don't even know how
- 3:56Speaker 1: to do it. You don't have any products, you don't
- 3:58Speaker 1: have any boxes. And I said, as long as airplanes
- 4:01Speaker 1: are flying in the sky, I can do this. Like
- 4:03Speaker 1: people have figured out crazy you're saying, then, and guess what,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and guess what. The thing about it is that this
- 4:10Speaker 1: is like a like like the last three or four years,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you've seen a lot of this monthly subscription where you order,
- 4:18Speaker 1: you pay nine nine and every month you get a
- 4:23Speaker 1: box with product and correct, that's what you're talking about,
- 4:26Speaker 1: right right, right, Yes, And we started almost six years
- 4:29Speaker 1: ago doing that absolutely. And so what I'm saying is
- 4:31Speaker 1: that that's why I started out with the word visionary, Okay,
- 4:35Speaker 1: because everybody basically is emulating what you've done. Okay, and
- 4:39Speaker 1: from a corporate standpoint, they're coming in with the big dollars,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you know, coming in big paperations are doing it. Now.
- 4:45Speaker 1: You started out little African American girl. F I'm a
- 4:48Speaker 1: track star, undefeated. You know, I ain't never lost in track.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Now already you're competitor, correct, correct, very So that means
- 5:00Speaker 1: that when you when people were telling you, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: what made you go beyond their no? You know, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: always say that if somebody tells me no, they don't
- 5:13Speaker 1: have enough information, right, it's either they don't have I
- 5:16Speaker 1: haven't given them enough information, or they're telling me not yet.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So I was met with a ton of nose. But
- 5:22Speaker 1: I said to myself, there's only twelve months in the
- 5:25Speaker 1: year they're over. At the time, they were over six
- 5:28Speaker 1: hundred hair care brands, and I was like, I have
- 5:30Speaker 1: to be able to at least get twelve yes is
- 5:32Speaker 1: out of six hundred. I have to So so I did.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But when I heard no, I was never angry, you know,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I just said, Okay, they just they need more information.
- 5:42Speaker 1: They want to see what I can do. So now
- 5:44Speaker 1: I've got to show improve right right. So so let's
- 5:47Speaker 1: let's start back now, because see, um, let's talk about
- 5:50Speaker 1: your life. You know, you know, where were you at
- 5:54Speaker 1: in your life? You know, professionally, were you like, you're
- 5:58Speaker 1: looking for the next big thing? All you said, I'm
- 6:00Speaker 1: gonna put on effort into this endeavor. I'm popping my
- 6:04Speaker 1: own personal money into this. Who was standing with you?
- 6:08Speaker 1: You know when you who was standing with you there?
- 6:11Speaker 1: You know I had? I was. I started off in
- 6:14Speaker 1: entertainment pr and I moved to Atlanta and at the
- 6:17Speaker 1: height of the recession, and I couldn't find a job.
- 6:20Speaker 1: So I started consulting. And then one of the clients
- 6:23Speaker 1: I started consulting um some online some apps and online businesses.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And what I was finding by helping them was that
- 6:30Speaker 1: they'll let you know how much money your sort of
- 6:34Speaker 1: placements have made them. So if I get you some placement,
- 6:37Speaker 1: somebody clicks through purchases. And I was helping these brands
- 6:40Speaker 1: make you know, eighty thousand, one hundred thousand dollars in months,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and my sea at the time was nowhere near that.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So I said to myself, I have to be able
- 6:48Speaker 1: to come up with something that I can then promote myself.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And so that's kind of what. The wheel started turning
- 6:55Speaker 1: and I saw deep, deep deep into like tech um
- 6:58Speaker 1: in the tech trade about a beauty about how beauty
- 7:02Speaker 1: subscriptions were going to be making a comeback. They hadn't
- 7:04Speaker 1: started yet, but they were going to be making a comeback.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And I said, great, idea, wrong market because women of color,
- 7:11Speaker 1: we've we've never nobody ever samples with us, nobody ever
- 7:15Speaker 1: does anything. They just expect us to buy it. So
- 7:18Speaker 1: I had, um, I reached out. I basically dialed in
- 7:22Speaker 1: all my favors. You know, I would you say that
- 7:26Speaker 1: everythy fashion fare was really the leading for us? You said,
- 7:30Speaker 1: women of color? Right, okay, so you was working with
- 7:34Speaker 1: that platform only out there you say, hey, we gotta
- 7:37Speaker 1: build you gotta we gotta build something for us. Correct, correct,
- 7:40Speaker 1: just more in terms of sampling. You know, we want
- 7:43Speaker 1: black women want to try things too. So that was
- 7:47Speaker 1: the deal. So I essentially I dialed in every single
- 7:50Speaker 1: favor that I had. The girl who made our current logo, um,
- 7:54Speaker 1: she did it for free. And she goes, if you
- 7:56Speaker 1: ever make any money on this, just go ahead and
- 7:58Speaker 1: pay me. So I right, right, yeah, but I did.
- 8:04Speaker 1: She but this is the thing she's been She's made
- 8:06Speaker 1: money off me every single month since then, I have
- 8:09Speaker 1: continued to employ her. Yeah, so um that was the deal. Well,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I just basically called everyone and I had no idea
- 8:17Speaker 1: about like packing and shipping and logistics. But my friend
- 8:21Speaker 1: connected me with his classmate who owned a fulfillment center,
- 8:25Speaker 1: so they took me on for free, no credit. Jack Um,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I want to tell you, okay, okay, okay, when did prayer,
- 8:34Speaker 1: how much prayer was going on, how much faith was
- 8:36Speaker 1: riding this this whole mission. You know what's so crazy
- 8:39Speaker 1: is that it was it was What was interesting about
- 8:42Speaker 1: my faith and this is that I felt like God
- 8:44Speaker 1: was insisting that I do this, Like I've given you
- 8:47Speaker 1: this idea and it's like you can try to ignore me,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but I'm going to every single night until you do it.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And that really I was like, okay, I hear you.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So I was like, I'm going to do it. And
- 8:58Speaker 1: when I took one step and is literally like every
- 9:01Speaker 1: it was like every single thing that I needed, somebody
- 9:04Speaker 1: stepped up and literally gave it to me, which was
- 9:07Speaker 1: insane awesome. That's this is awesome because the reason to
- 9:11Speaker 1: say it's awesome because of the fact that you're able
- 9:13Speaker 1: to tell your story and make it happen in a
- 9:15Speaker 1: big way. Am I correct? And then but but but
- 9:19Speaker 1: the thing about it is that I always tell, at
- 9:21Speaker 1: what point did you have a plan? At what point
- 9:25Speaker 1: did you know? Because you just didn't jump out there
- 9:27Speaker 1: on faith? You have plans, right, relationships, mentors and things
- 9:31Speaker 1: like that. So because I want people to hear these things,
- 9:33Speaker 1: because you know, when you also to show like money
- 9:35Speaker 1: making conversations. I get tons of direct messages on LinkedIn,
- 9:40Speaker 1: on Facebook, people with all these ideas, and soon as
- 9:43Speaker 1: their ideas there's no merit to them, or they just
- 9:45Speaker 1: sent me a video, no merit to them, no plan,
- 9:48Speaker 1: no plan of action. I got the fact that everybody
- 9:51Speaker 1: has a dream, but what is your plan of action
- 9:53Speaker 1: tied to that? You are a visionary. And usually when
- 9:57Speaker 1: you're a visionary, when I say people are visionary, I'm
- 9:59Speaker 1: talking by Zuckenberg or Facebook, I'm talking about Steve jobs Apple.
- 10:04Speaker 1: These are people who see things uniquely in a space
- 10:07Speaker 1: and then make a model that nobody else is doing
- 10:10Speaker 1: at the time. That's what you did at the time,
- 10:12Speaker 1: that's now becoming popular, has become a very popular drawing.
- 10:16Speaker 1: That's that's just just take it off. You know, you
- 10:19Speaker 1: see national commercials with these same little monthly subscription boxes.
- 10:23Speaker 1: When you get it, you're gonna get these products, is
- 10:26Speaker 1: a guarantee. When we come back, if you don't mind,
- 10:29Speaker 1: hang on a little bit, we're gonna talk about to
- 10:31Speaker 1: my understanding. Uh, you're gonna be a future mom, is
- 10:34Speaker 1: that correct? Okay, we will talk about that because they're
- 10:37Speaker 1: gonna talk about how she's gonna change her work schedule,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know, and we're gonna talk about what's in that
- 10:42Speaker 1: box that you get every month because it changes every month. Correct, correct? Okay, cool,
- 10:47Speaker 1: we'll be right back now. I'm on the phone with
- 10:49Speaker 1: my leak. The emphasis on my til there were going. Now,
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna win with you now because that's what you're special.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You're very very special. And I say that because of
- 11:00Speaker 1: the fact that you know it had to be uh,
- 11:03Speaker 1: you know from a you know, it's interesting when I
- 11:08Speaker 1: meet people like you because you got it early on somehow,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you know, you had the gene or somebody was important
- 11:15Speaker 1: in your life. I don't know your entire story to
- 11:18Speaker 1: say that that that pushed you that, uh, I told
- 11:21Speaker 1: you you could be more than that what everybody else
- 11:24Speaker 1: puts on the wall or everybody else tells you that
- 11:26Speaker 1: the color of your skin. Who was that person? Probably?
- 11:31Speaker 1: I think my parents, you know, my parents, my dad specifically,
- 11:36Speaker 1: probably just always I knew. I knew as I'm doing
- 11:40Speaker 1: my daughter right now, I'm pushing the I'm pushing them
- 11:43Speaker 1: to my leak. Tell my daughter gonna be Christiana McDonald.
- 11:47Speaker 1: There you go. Yeah, like very I think, very tough,
- 11:50Speaker 1: just you know, very tough and always spoke to me
- 11:53Speaker 1: like I was an adult, like never kitty talk, always
- 11:56Speaker 1: to let me have an opinion in a voice. And
- 11:58Speaker 1: I think that that that really helps with limiting the
- 12:01Speaker 1: amount of fear that I have as an adult. Don't
- 12:04Speaker 1: do you want like I just I jokingly said, that's
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's a compliment. I feel. I want my daughter to be,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, just like my leak till it's just how
- 12:14Speaker 1: does that feel when that when you hear somebody like
- 12:16Speaker 1: me Rashan McDonald say that to you and sincerely say
- 12:19Speaker 1: that to you because of the fact that you know
- 12:21Speaker 1: you're doing your own thing, and you're doing it in
- 12:24Speaker 1: a way that most people have told you know, but
- 12:27Speaker 1: in your back of your mind, you've had a support
- 12:29Speaker 1: system and said don't listen. Don't listen. Don't I taught
- 12:33Speaker 1: you to work hard. I've been telling you, you a baby,
- 12:36Speaker 1: that you can do this. Don't let people get your
- 12:39Speaker 1: head and tell you what you cannot do. That's amazing,
- 12:42Speaker 1: that's amazing. How do you feel? How do you feel?
- 12:46Speaker 1: You know what? Sometimes I get people write me tons
- 12:48Speaker 1: of letters and it is definitely humbling and sometimes overwhelmed
- 12:52Speaker 1: me because I you know, the thing of being quote
- 12:56Speaker 1: unquote special is nice to hear, I think, but more
- 12:59Speaker 1: than anything, it's just the dedication to just working hard
- 13:02Speaker 1: and always doing the personal work. You know, it takes
- 13:05Speaker 1: a lot of personal work to not be defeated because
- 13:08Speaker 1: I think we don't realize the person that defeats us
- 13:11Speaker 1: first is ourselves. Yeah. Yeah, it was like a lot
- 13:16Speaker 1: of work to not talk yourself out of the game.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You know. It's interesting because I try to share a
- 13:21Speaker 1: little personal stories about myself because I've achieved a lot
- 13:25Speaker 1: of success in my life. But I've also i will
- 13:29Speaker 1: tell you, because people told me I was special. Because
- 13:32Speaker 1: people told me I was unique, then you know I've
- 13:35Speaker 1: been bullied in my life, you know what I'm saying.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So not only not physically, I was bullied physically when
- 13:41Speaker 1: I was in fourth grade. Look, I couldn't pass the
- 13:43Speaker 1: due let's the game a quarter. And but you know
- 13:46Speaker 1: when teachers asked me to read and class, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 1: students with get mad and people honored you for good attendance.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Agrade your other peer group will getting mad. And I'm
- 13:56Speaker 1: gonna tell it took me a long time. That's why
- 13:58Speaker 1: I admired they that the share of protection that was
- 14:02Speaker 1: given to you, that allowed you to grow because I
- 14:04Speaker 1: only had to I only had to figure out on
- 14:06Speaker 1: my own. And I would tell you it took me
- 14:08Speaker 1: years to accept who Roshan McDonald was and is today.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And that's important that when I'm talking to you, and
- 14:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep pounding. If you don't, I'm gonna keep
- 14:17Speaker 1: telling you, I ain't gotta tell you too much because
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know you've got people have already told you all
- 14:21Speaker 1: your life how special you are. And I want I
- 14:24Speaker 1: want the kids to be put your poster, put your
- 14:27Speaker 1: put your brand on their walls and say I want
- 14:29Speaker 1: to be just like her, because that will enable them
- 14:32Speaker 1: to understand that no matter what, you can be like
- 14:36Speaker 1: my leak. And I think that's I think that's important
- 14:39Speaker 1: and that leads to my next question. My next story
- 14:42Speaker 1: is about your podcast, because because you see, that's how
- 14:45Speaker 1: I working on this show. You know, my leak got
- 14:47Speaker 1: I kind of working over here. But I'm really sliding
- 14:50Speaker 1: over to something even more important, is your podcast. Tell
- 14:53Speaker 1: us about your podcast. The podcast. I actually started UM
- 15:00Speaker 1: Callbox that November eleven, and I started the podcast literally
- 15:05Speaker 1: the very next month, almost as a like a conversation
- 15:09Speaker 1: with myself UM and everything that I had gone through personally,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and also all of the lessons I felt that I
- 15:16Speaker 1: had learned that had gotten me to that point. And
- 15:18Speaker 1: so I think when I started recording it back in
- 15:21Speaker 1: twenty eleven, I used to get like maybe twenty listens
- 15:25Speaker 1: like four weeks, and it was so defeating. It was.
- 15:30Speaker 1: It was so defeating, it wasn't it. You know, I
- 15:32Speaker 1: had no I had no point of like point of view,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I had nothing to compare it to. There was not
- 15:42Speaker 1: that people weren't really doing podcast back then. So twenty
- 15:45Speaker 1: was better than nothing, and nothing was all I knew.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And so yeah, very much word of mouth. I think
- 15:55Speaker 1: all of my businesses have succeeded just by word of mouth.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And now I get millions of downloads a year on
- 16:01Speaker 1: my podcast. And if I do it all alone, I
- 16:03Speaker 1: do it by myself my own microphone. I do it
- 16:05Speaker 1: in my kitchen, and it's there's you know, I just
- 16:08Speaker 1: started having guests on, but it really is just more
- 16:11Speaker 1: of a just so I won't qualify, right, I'm balling
- 16:16Speaker 1: here that I won't curl I won't qualify for the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Curly Box interview. I don't know that, but that's all
- 16:21Speaker 1: right now, just continue with you with your motivation about
- 16:24Speaker 1: your podcast, which I have a big fan. Fact, she's
- 16:27Speaker 1: she's she's kind of underselling herself over two million downloads. Okay,
- 16:32Speaker 1: this is not she she's away from twenty to over
- 16:36Speaker 1: two million. And I say that because of the fact
- 16:40Speaker 1: that that's what this show is about money making conversation.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Because see, along the way of being successful in my life,
- 16:47Speaker 1: my personal and my professional life, you know, sometimes you
- 16:50Speaker 1: know because you're you're a goal already person, which means
- 16:52Speaker 1: that when I say that means that when she meets
- 16:54Speaker 1: one goal, she moves past it. And sometimes you move
- 16:58Speaker 1: past it so fast you don't even appreciate what you've
- 17:01Speaker 1: accomplished and my correctness in it, and so and so
- 17:06Speaker 1: that's that's what this show is about. To be able
- 17:08Speaker 1: to let people hear your story, but also to share
- 17:11Speaker 1: with you the values of what you're doing and how
- 17:14Speaker 1: you are changing the game. You've already said two very
- 17:17Speaker 1: significant things on this show, but you've been very casual
- 17:20Speaker 1: with it. You started Morthless subscriptions market subscription before that
- 17:25Speaker 1: was even in the game. Okay, and then you turn
- 17:28Speaker 1: around saying I was podcasting before podcasting, you know. So
- 17:33Speaker 1: so you had a vision about two and you started
- 17:37Speaker 1: nearly at the same time, so so so yeah, yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 1: just said yeah, so so with that being said, my friend,
- 17:47Speaker 1: my friend who who who's out of here just doing
- 17:51Speaker 1: it up, you know, about to be a fantastic future mom.
- 17:56Speaker 1: What is the future for you? Oh God, that's always
- 18:00Speaker 1: the hardest question. You know. I think that everything that
- 18:04Speaker 1: I do is always, um, whatever I think is on
- 18:08Speaker 1: my heart, right, so I think, uh, I have I
- 18:12Speaker 1: feel very lucky to have businesses. But the podcast does well,
- 18:16Speaker 1: the the curl box does well. And now that I
- 18:19Speaker 1: mean I've decided to become a mom a little bit

- 18:44Speaker 1: that I took a lot of trips and I saw
- 18:45Speaker 1: a lot of things, and I'm like, this isn't gonna
- 18:47Speaker 1: get boring alone after a while, you know. Um So
- 18:51Speaker 1: now I don't know. I think I think I was worried.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I had a conversation with my dad about, oh my god,
- 18:56Speaker 1: am I going to fall off? Because that was my fear.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And having a child is that if I have started family,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and I think my Dad's like not at all, And
- 19:03Speaker 1: I think I don't know you're a parent, but I
- 19:06Speaker 1: think you start to feel like, okay, now I have
- 19:09Speaker 1: to go even harder. Like it's the thing is like
- 19:11Speaker 1: I don't even like they eat first, right, So it's
- 19:14Speaker 1: like I'm not just feeding myself right now, I'm I
- 19:17Speaker 1: wanna hunt. I've got i wanna mission with somebody on
- 19:19Speaker 1: my back now, so I'm gonna be even more vicious,
- 19:22Speaker 1: you know. Right then, you now have a future, That's
