- 1:10Speaker 1: conversations Bishop TD Jakes.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Hello, Hello, thank you for having me.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Bishop. Did I lay you out there? Did I lay you.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Out that I wondered.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Your story is.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I've been fortunately and blessed to have met you over
- 1:26Speaker 1: the years in my working relationship with Steve Harvey. You've
- 1:29Speaker 1: never disappointed and you you've laid a path of opportunity
- 1:34Speaker 1: for individuals like me to say I can do this.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And when I look at the book that we're going.
- 1:38Speaker 1: To talk about, Soil build your vision from the ground up,
- 1:42Speaker 1: it is truly a person's blueprint for success as an
- 1:45Speaker 1: individual and especially in entrepreneurship. Why did you decide to
- 1:49Speaker 1: do it this time, sir?
- 1:51Speaker 3: You know it was It was really a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 3: pun in prayer and ever went into it because my
- 1:56Speaker 3: liability is my own career. People see you as clergyman,
- 2:00Speaker 3: they have difficulty seeing you as anything else. And yet
- 2:04Speaker 3: the elephant in the middle of the room is I've
- 2:06Speaker 3: done over five hundred million dollars worth of films grossed
- 2:10Speaker 3: at the box office, continue to be in that arena
- 2:12Speaker 3: and now during television with Lifetime, done a lot of
- 2:16Speaker 3: projects and outside things beyond the pale of clergy. And
- 2:20Speaker 3: when I look around at our communities. It's not just
- 2:23Speaker 3: preaching that we need. We need information about business, about entrepreneurship,
- 2:28Speaker 3: recreating our lives. People who were a second chance citizens,
- 2:33Speaker 3: ex offenders, how do they get back up on their
- 2:35Speaker 3: feet again? Mothers have empty nests, people trying to subsidize
- 2:39Speaker 3: their income, looking for a job when you may have
- 2:42Speaker 3: to create the job that you need. And I wanted
- 2:44Speaker 3: to have a conversation with my generation about it.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It is important.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And before we even get into the book, it's two
- 2:51Speaker 1: sections I want to talk about. It's the front of
- 2:53Speaker 1: the book, in the back of the book. In the
- 2:55Speaker 1: front of the book you talk about the Texas Offenders
- 2:57Speaker 1: re Entry Initiative, which I knew nothing about. Let me
- 3:01Speaker 1: give my listeners the background. Launch in two thousand and five,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the TORII program has served over ten thousand formerly in
- 3:09Speaker 1: cost of radio adults across the state of Texas in healthcare, employment, housing, spirituality,
- 3:15Speaker 1: education and family.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But ten thousand, Bishop Tdjakes, it's not.
- 3:20Speaker 3: The number is actually up to seventeen thousand now that
- 3:23Speaker 3: have gone through our program. We meet them once they
- 3:26Speaker 3: get out of prison. We put them into a year
- 3:28Speaker 3: to two year training program that helps some of them
- 3:31Speaker 3: to get GEDs. Fifty percent of them have gotten jobs
- 3:34Speaker 3: as a result of being there. We direct them into housing,
- 3:38Speaker 3: We work on their family skills, we do anger management classes,
- 3:42Speaker 3: we do very practical dress, how to address for an interview,
- 3:47Speaker 3: that sort of thing, and we continue to enhance it.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I meet the CEOs and corporate leaders about giving a
- 3:53Speaker 3: certain amount of job allotments to second chance citizens. And
- 3:57Speaker 3: we have had accommodations from the Obama administration down through
- 4:02Speaker 3: the years. We've been appreciated by the criminal justice system,
- 4:05Speaker 3: and we're getting ready to have a graduation and still
- 4:08Speaker 3: for a whole new match of students who are coming
- 4:10Speaker 3: through the program. So it's alive and.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Well, if you ever need me to speak to them,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know, I'm about motivation, about uplift. You know my life.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I come from the inner city fifth Ward. I've been fortunate.
- 4:20Speaker 1: My degree is in mathematics and corporate trained and IBM,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and I just know that sometimes you need to hear
- 4:26Speaker 1: a person just came from a community that wasn't supposed
- 4:28Speaker 1: to be the blessed community right stepped out there, was
- 4:33Speaker 1: pushed in the right direction.
- 4:34Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. We all are pushed but
- 4:36Speaker 2: sometimes we don't.
- 4:37Speaker 1: We ignore that push or that renovation and the right
- 4:40Speaker 1: people motivated me. And when it was at the front
- 4:42Speaker 1: of the book, I wanted to bring that out because
- 4:44Speaker 1: if it's important to be in the book, the only
- 4:46Speaker 1: thing I would say, I bought the book on Kendle,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I bought your book, sir.
- 4:50Speaker 2: They could at least go.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Online and update ten thousand and seventeen thousand.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Okay, it's digital. They can go in there and change
- 4:58Speaker 2: that ten thousand and seventeen thousand.
- 5:00Speaker 3: You know, the number is so staggering. And people who
- 5:03Speaker 3: have been following me for years, some of them knowing,
- 5:05Speaker 3: some of them don't. If you follow me on social media,
- 5:08Speaker 3: you get to see the graduation and the clips of
- 5:10Speaker 3: the graduation, or if you're a member of my church,
- 5:12Speaker 3: you're knowing. But if you just watch my television show,
- 5:14Speaker 3: you would never know that we're doing anything like that.
- 5:17Speaker 3: We've been doing this for years, I know.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And that's another segment before we get in the book.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I want to talk about is the back of the book.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Okay, because it's an appendix section called where you it's
- 5:27Speaker 1: called definition of term section? Will you really break down
- 5:30Speaker 1: explain to people what a sole for propriortoreship is corporation,
- 5:34Speaker 1: is cash flow, balance sheet And these are statements that
- 5:37Speaker 1: scare people because they don't know where to go, they
- 5:40Speaker 1: don't know what to term. So and then you have
- 5:43Speaker 1: another section called other resource section, will you explain to
- 5:46Speaker 1: people what a small business administration is and what website
- 5:50Speaker 1: to go to?
- 5:52Speaker 2: You know, all these A score website to go to, Black.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Enterprise, Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneur magazine, all these things. Why was important
- 6:01Speaker 1: because I read a lot of books. I've been motivated
- 6:04Speaker 1: a lot over years. I've been fortunate that I have
- 6:06Speaker 1: done talk shows like you have, so I've gotten a
- 6:08Speaker 1: lot of books come my way over the last ten
- 6:10Speaker 1: years of my life. I've never seen this in a book.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Why did you?
- 6:15Speaker 3: I did not want to write a puff piece, a
- 6:18Speaker 3: fluff book, but you know you could make it and
- 6:21Speaker 3: name it and claim it and go after your dreams
- 6:23Speaker 3: and all that kind of stuff. Because at the end
- 6:25Speaker 3: of you know, motivation without information least to frustration. So
- 6:32Speaker 3: I did not want to further motivate people without providing
- 6:35Speaker 3: the kind of information that would cause them to end
- 6:38Speaker 3: up with frustration. Every And you know this, well, if
- 6:42Speaker 3: you've done entertainment business, like you have. Every genre of
- 6:46Speaker 3: business has its own lingo and language. You can't function
- 6:51Speaker 3: in that genre if you don't learn the language. You
- 6:55Speaker 3: wouldn't go to Spain to live and not learn Spanish.
- 6:58Speaker 3: You wouldn't go to Paris and not learn friends. And
- 7:00Speaker 3: if you're going to go into business, you have to
- 7:02Speaker 3: learn the language. And I've tried to make it simple enough.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's not like a whole foreign language, but there are
- 7:08Speaker 3: some terms so that when you're in a meeting, you
- 7:10Speaker 3: have some sense of what they're talking about and you're
- 7:12Speaker 3: not intimidated. So many people are going in business because
- 7:16Speaker 3: they have a talent. They have the talent, but they
- 7:18Speaker 3: don't have the terms. And the terms helps you to
- 7:21Speaker 3: be able to escalate the talent because then you can
- 7:24Speaker 3: craft the business model to protect you because business is
- 7:29Speaker 3: a jungle and you can get divied out there if
- 7:32Speaker 3: you don't know how to protect yourself and you.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And that's why I'm telling everybody right now.
- 7:37Speaker 1: The show Money Making Conversation is designed for entrepreneurship. Free
- 7:41Speaker 1: information that I provide to my listeners and viewers. If
- 7:44Speaker 1: you're on my Facebook page. This is the first book
- 7:46Speaker 1: I've ever encountered.
- 7:48Speaker 2: That is a book.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You go to the shelves, you walk away, and you
- 7:51Speaker 1: can build your career, build your life not only through
- 7:55Speaker 1: your faith, but all through to principles. Throughout this book,
- 7:59Speaker 1: it's about sore and the analogy is taken from the
- 8:02Speaker 1: fact that as a kid, which I was related to.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I related to the fact that my dad, my Disneyland
- 8:07Speaker 1: trip was to go to the airport right and watch
- 8:10Speaker 1: the planes take off. When I read that, I said,
- 8:12Speaker 1: this is my book.
- 8:17Speaker 3: It was cheap entertainment back then. We go to the
- 8:19Speaker 3: airport and watch some flights take off. My kids wouldn't
- 8:22Speaker 3: think we were crazy if I took them to the
- 8:23Speaker 3: airport to watch some planes take off, but it was
- 8:26Speaker 3: the only kind of entertainment my parents could afford. It
- 8:29Speaker 3: led to me becoming fascinated with the Right Brothers. The
- 8:33Speaker 3: Right Brothers become the metaphor for the book because they
- 8:36Speaker 3: built their airplane in a bicycle shop, and it just
- 8:40Speaker 3: it's a great conversation.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I love writing the book, and that's the type of terminology.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's going to be relatable, you know.
- 8:47Speaker 1: The next break, we're going to go into more detail
- 8:49Speaker 1: about the actual book because I want people to understand
- 8:51Speaker 1: that it's broken down into four parts. I'm just gonna
- 8:53Speaker 1: set everybody up. It's four parts. Expand your vision, Bill,
- 8:57Speaker 1: your wings, clear the clouds, soart a new high. And
- 9:00Speaker 1: when I when I, when I'm engaged in this next
- 9:03Speaker 1: don't go nowhere because you got to hear the profound
- 9:05Speaker 1: words of leadership, fellowship, and in entrepreneurship. That's going to
- 9:11Speaker 1: let you know that you can win in the game
- 9:14Speaker 1: of small business and game of life. And the one
- 9:17Speaker 1: thing I also took away from the book is that
- 9:19Speaker 1: if you're the employee, you should read this book because
- 9:21Speaker 1: you are a brand and you should consider yourself an entrepreneur.
- 9:25Speaker 1: On the pog is Bishop Tdjkes, and we're going to
- 9:27Speaker 1: go in more detail about sore New York Times bestseller
- 9:31Speaker 1: build your Vision from the ground up, And I'm telling
- 9:34Speaker 1: everybody it truly is a person's blueprint for success.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Bishop.
- 9:40Speaker 1: The reason I want to really start with your mom
- 9:42Speaker 1: and your dad, because see, when people write books. The
- 9:45Speaker 1: one thing I don't like when they write books, it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: like they have no history and.
- 9:48Speaker 2: They don't have any resume.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Your mom was a real estate was involved in real estate,
- 9:53Speaker 1: and your father had a janitorial service.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So you learned this as a young As a youth,
- 9:59Speaker 2: it was.
- 9:59Speaker 3: A conversation in my house every day. It was the
- 10:01Speaker 3: environment I grew up here. And my mother was always
- 10:05Speaker 3: looking for a deal on real estate and buying these
- 10:08Speaker 3: pieces of property and collecting rent from them, and in fact,
- 10:11Speaker 3: she did it when I was a child. She maintained
- 10:14Speaker 3: that property throughout her life. My mother finally died at
- 10:18Speaker 3: seventy three with Alzheimer's, and even as she was fading away,
- 10:23Speaker 3: my mother had rent money coming in that she from
- 10:26Speaker 3: houses she couldn't remember anymore. And it left an indelible
- 10:30Speaker 3: impression upon me because my mother was not at the
- 10:33Speaker 3: mercy of social security. She was not at the mercy
- 10:37Speaker 3: of her teacher's retirement. Though she received that, she subsidized
- 10:40Speaker 3: her income, and she becomes a catalyst for conversation, particularly
- 10:45Speaker 3: for women of color who have had to scratch their
- 10:47Speaker 3: way up and fight them to fight the tide and
- 10:51Speaker 3: the male dominated disconnect that exists in our country today.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I think my mother is the social greate inspiration.
- 11:01Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more from Rashaan McDonald, and
- 11:03Speaker 1: money making conversations don't touch.
- 11:05Speaker 2: That, though.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Money Making Conversations Masterclass hosted by
- 11:13Speaker 4: Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations Masterclass continues online at Moneymakingconversations
- 11:19Speaker 4: dot com and follow money Making Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter,
- 11:24Speaker 4: and Instagram.
- 11:26Speaker 2: You better believe it.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And that's another reason I'm gonna I'm gonna keep putting
- 11:30Speaker 1: notches on why you should read this book. You should
- 11:32Speaker 1: read this book about your mom because of the fact
- 11:34Speaker 1: that you know, in the times of racism, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and it was you know, this still doesn't exist today,
- 11:39Speaker 1: but back then, you know, for her to have the
- 11:41Speaker 1: inspiration to understand, Okay, I'm a school teacher, but I'm
- 11:44Speaker 1: gonna put a lot of money over here, and I'm
- 11:46Speaker 1: gonna go go get this one house, get this one house.
- 11:49Speaker 1: That is to me is that's just have to experience
- 11:53Speaker 1: that lets me know why you're successful today.
- 11:56Speaker 3: My mother bought so much real estate that they ended
- 11:58Speaker 3: up niming the street after her. She owned all the
- 12:01Speaker 3: property on the street and property in other areas of
- 12:03Speaker 3: the city. So I had her on one hand and
- 12:06Speaker 3: my dad was on the other hand, who started a
- 12:08Speaker 3: business with a mom and a mucket and ended up
- 12:10Speaker 3: with fifty two employees in the sixties in West Virginia,
- 12:15Speaker 3: the second poor state in the Union, five percent black
- 12:19Speaker 3: in the sixties, and he still want in the art
- 12:22Speaker 3: of business, my friend with lease.
- 12:24Speaker 2: That's to your book, my friend. So build your.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Vision from the ground up. You broke it up in
- 12:29Speaker 1: the four chapters I'm just named these chapters. Just give
- 12:31Speaker 1: me a short synopsis on why that chapter is important.
- 12:34Speaker 1: The first part one expand your vision.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You know, you are no more than the thoughts you think,
- 12:40Speaker 3: and it's very, very important that you span your vision.
- 12:43Speaker 3: I see so many people who are even working good jobs.
- 12:46Speaker 3: We mentioned before the break about people who are on
- 12:49Speaker 3: a job and they're building a vision for the company,
- 12:52Speaker 3: but they have not built a brand for themselves. And
- 12:55Speaker 3: when the company gets finished with you, they tossed you aside.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You're back to ground level zero. You have not used
- 13:01Speaker 3: those principles that you use for the company, you don't
- 13:03Speaker 3: use them for yourself. I think that's a very important
- 13:06Speaker 3: place to start. The fact that African American women and
- 13:11Speaker 3: Leatingo women are going into business more readily than any
- 13:14Speaker 3: other people group is important to discuss as well, because
- 13:17Speaker 3: they're also going out of business because they don't really
- 13:20Speaker 3: have sustainability or access to finances in order to be productive.
- 13:26Speaker 3: So I start out by talking about vision. Everything starts
- 13:30Speaker 3: with the vision. Expanding your vision, going to new horizons,
- 13:33Speaker 3: always being progressive, not being so busy doing the work
- 13:37Speaker 3: that you don't get to think the work you do.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Lost entrepreneurs the same thing that made them greatest killing them.
- 13:43Speaker 3: They're so busy doing the work that they don't get
- 13:46Speaker 3: a chance to think the work. And they cannot confuse
- 13:49Speaker 3: busyness with business.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Wow, you have two chapters here, chapter two and chapter three.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Bill your wings and clear the clouds.
- 13:59Speaker 3: You have to bill your their own wings. I use
- 14:01Speaker 3: again the metaphor the right brothers. And it took them
- 14:04Speaker 3: forever to get the plane in the air, but they
- 14:06Speaker 3: had to build their own wings in order to get
- 14:08Speaker 3: it done. It's not going to happen through magic. It
- 14:11Speaker 3: is a building process. It is not going to come
- 14:15Speaker 3: through osmosis or just because you put a nice picture
- 14:18Speaker 3: on social media. I deeply believe in marketing and social media,
- 14:23Speaker 3: but that it's not going to come through magic like that.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And I talk about building those wings because when you
- 14:29Speaker 3: think of a business, a business is not a destination
- 14:33Speaker 3: it's a transportation. The destination was to get in the clouds.
- 14:37Speaker 3: The transportation was the plane. So your goal should not
- 14:41Speaker 3: be to have a business. Your goal should be to
- 14:44Speaker 3: have economic equity and your flight pattern and your wings
- 14:48Speaker 3: is through your business. If the goal is to have
- 14:51Speaker 3: a business, you can have a business to starve to death.
- 14:53Speaker 3: The goal should be to have economic liquidity so that
- 14:56Speaker 3: you have something pass on to your areas and be
- 14:58Speaker 3: able to us your community, your generation, show into your charities,
- 15:03Speaker 3: whatever you that's the goal. Now what are we going
- 15:05Speaker 3: to build to accomplish the goal? Too many people see
- 15:08Speaker 3: the business as the goal. The business is not the goal.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It is not the ends. It's the means. You have
- 15:15Speaker 3: to build those wings to get you to the end
- 15:18Speaker 3: of where you're trying to go.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:21Speaker 1: In the last chapter, last like I say, is four parts,
- 15:23Speaker 1: expand your vision, billion wings, clear the clouds, and the
- 15:26Speaker 1: final one is sore to new heights.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Keep evolving, keep growing. Whether you build a business to sell,
- 15:33Speaker 3: and there are logical reasons why many people build a
- 15:36Speaker 3: business with selling in mind, or whether you build the
- 15:39Speaker 3: business to pass on as a legacy to your children,
- 15:42Speaker 3: you have to keep momentum. You have to keep momentum.
- 15:45Speaker 3: It is the thrust that keeps the plane in the air.
- 15:48Speaker 3: If you lose your thrust, the plane will fall. The
- 15:52Speaker 3: law of aerodynamics supersedes the law of gravity. And this
- 15:56Speaker 3: is the issue in all of our lives. We have
- 15:58Speaker 3: a gravitational pull that's always try to pull us back
- 16:01Speaker 3: down to where we came from. In order to escape
- 16:04Speaker 3: that gravitational pull, you must maintain momentum. So you must
- 16:08Speaker 3: be airborne. Must maintained momentum, keep growing, keep building, keep
- 16:12Speaker 3: going forward, because if an airport, if an airplane stops
- 16:16Speaker 3: his thrust, it will immediately fall to the ground.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen and sore, build your vision from the
- 16:22Speaker 1: ground up. Bishop TDJS reveals how to build a uniquely
- 16:26Speaker 1: personal vision within you, within you, listen to me, within
- 16:29Speaker 1: you into your own special and have you make your
- 16:32Speaker 1: own special contributions to the world by blending common.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Sense and information.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That's what this book brings to you, common sense and information,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and he wraps it up with faith. Don't ever walk
- 16:45Speaker 1: on out that door thinking faith does not play a
- 16:47Speaker 1: major role.
- 16:48Speaker 2: That's what I loved about this book because from.
- 16:50Speaker 1: A ministers from a ministrels from a preaching standpoint.
- 16:56Speaker 2: You know, we know what you do. You're a bishop.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You didn't start the book out like that, you go
- 17:02Speaker 1: through it all. I'm gonna lay it out the stores
- 17:04Speaker 1: with Oprah Michelle Nicholas as the lieutenant or hurl. You
- 17:07Speaker 1: talk about Miss Robbie, you talk about Patti LaBelle, how
