- 1:38Speaker 1: secrets of success experience firsthand by marketing and Brandon expert
- 1:41Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me advice on
- 1:44Speaker 1: many occasions. In the case you didn't notice, I'm not broke,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know he'll be interview with celebrity CEOs, entrepreneurs and
- 1:50Speaker 1: industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do, it's
- 1:53Speaker 1: what he likes to share. Now it's time to hear
- 1:56Speaker 1: from my man, Rashan McDonald. Money Making Conversation's gilling. Welcome
- 2:00Speaker 1: to Many Making Conversation. I'm your host from Sean McDonald.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I tell everybody every week it's time to stop reading
- 2:06Speaker 1: your your stories and their stories. Write your own story
- 2:09Speaker 1: because you gotta write it down because you're just reading something.
- 2:12Speaker 1: This your story, and it's not really your story because
- 2:14Speaker 1: it's a it's an example of something that you want
- 2:17Speaker 1: to be. It's time to write your own story. And
- 2:19Speaker 1: I always leave with your gifts. That's your passion, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: don't let your age, friends, family, or coworker stop you
- 2:24Speaker 1: from planning or living your dream. My next cast is
- 2:27Speaker 1: all about that, watching living the dream, watching him grow,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and I was so excited. And when they first booked
- 2:32Speaker 1: him on the show, on this new show flash Bush, Flatbush, misdemeanor,
- 2:36Speaker 1: this Aaron on Showtime, I said, no, no, no, no no.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I got to see the episode before I interview him,
- 2:42Speaker 1: Lord and Mercy. I'm glad. I wait, I'm glad I
- 2:44Speaker 1: pushed forward before he is breaking out fund But see,
- 2:47Speaker 1: here's the cool thing, because I gotta give his credit
- 2:49Speaker 1: because I just want to give us from love before
- 2:51Speaker 1: we get started. Because his name is Hassan Johnson. Hassan
- 2:54Speaker 1: has been seen in many rows from the Wire Brooklyn Finals.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Now hear what I'm saying that that had nothing to
- 3:00Speaker 1: do with funny them two roles. That has nothing to
- 3:03Speaker 1: do with a comedian. He recently wrapped a recurrent role
- 3:06Speaker 1: and they hit ABC Drama for Life. No comedy there, Okay,
- 3:10Speaker 1: just setting you up for where we're going with this
- 3:12Speaker 1: journey with Hassan. But he's recently seen in the comedic
- 3:15Speaker 1: Chops okay, Tracy Morgan in The Last o g You
- 3:18Speaker 1: might have saw him in Top five Okay. Now he's
- 3:21Speaker 1: in this new show, Flat Bush Misdemeanor, which premiers May
- 3:24Speaker 1: twenty three at ten thirty pm on Eastern Standard Time
- 3:28Speaker 1: and Pacific on Showtime. You know his characters drew a bold,
- 3:32Speaker 1: direct man who's extremely protective of his loved one, in
- 3:35Speaker 1: particularly his niece. His demand is coming comflict with his
- 3:39Speaker 1: livelihood of both Kevin and my man damn them two brothers.
- 3:43Speaker 1: They lead character, they wrote it, they directed, the executive
- 3:45Speaker 1: produced the whole series. Are fantastic, please working with the
- 3:48Speaker 1: money make conversation for the first time, the very fun
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna say y'all, the very funny and talented Hassan Johnson.
- 3:55Speaker 1: How you doing? Oh man? They were introduction. Thank you, Sean.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'm glad they definitely showed you the episode first man.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You know, the bonus says, because you know, I wanted
- 4:08Speaker 1: to book you too, that's the awesome ball And I
- 4:10Speaker 1: went hold on, he got a new show, because you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: because I hate coming on there talking about something I
- 4:15Speaker 1: don't know nothing about. And you know, it'd be just
- 4:18Speaker 1: a lot of air, hot air getting blown around. I understand, yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, so I respected with you'll do the don't
- 4:23Speaker 1: want me coming on the show, just revealing the pilot
- 4:25Speaker 1: and don't matter nobody watches. Well, let me tell you
- 4:27Speaker 1: all this. We're gonna talk in like you know, in
- 4:30Speaker 1: evergreen term generic terms about the pilot. But the pilot
- 4:35Speaker 1: his historical and this boy right here, this ball right
- 4:39Speaker 1: here I'm talking to right here is uh he played.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He stayed in the little genre little thug, look thug,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, but boy he funny man talk about man.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Let's talk about the series, and then we're gonna go
- 4:51Speaker 1: back to when I first encountered you on the wire.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And it's been a journeyman long journey of excellent opportunities.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But you can get, like it says, stereotype into certain roles,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and we'll talk about you coming out of that and
- 5:04Speaker 1: and just being uh, just super funny. I'm hoping this
- 5:07Speaker 1: is the character that you're doing, it becomes a hit series,
- 5:09Speaker 1: so you can really really show people your range. Talk
- 5:12Speaker 1: about flask Bush misdemeanor and your character Drew well ce
- 5:16Speaker 1: Drew uncle Drew. As you'll get to know, he is
- 5:19Speaker 1: uncle to the little girls ain't and not so little
- 5:22Speaker 1: girls ain't on this show because she had a mean
- 5:24Speaker 1: punch boy. So anyway, Uncle Drew brings, I like to say,
- 5:29Speaker 1: this balance to an array of this like dysfunctional characters. Right,
- 5:34Speaker 1: because then while he's so overprotective of Zanta, he's this
- 5:38Speaker 1: tough guy that's put the central tough god mean god
- 5:41Speaker 1: he he this is a fairness in him that that
- 5:45Speaker 1: we're gonna explore that, you know what I'm saying. And
- 5:48Speaker 1: he encounters Kevin and Dan and they start to appreciate
- 5:52Speaker 1: the fairness that is who who Drew is. But he
- 5:54Speaker 1: brings this this balance to this dysfunction and then vary
- 5:59Speaker 1: lies his own this function because he's so over protectular
- 6:02Speaker 1: Inzana and he's about his education and you get to
- 6:05Speaker 1: discovery why well, you know, the beauty of the characters
- 6:08Speaker 1: is written by Kearn and Dan exaction. You know it
- 6:12Speaker 1: really uh, it's it's a it's shot a certain way.
- 6:16Speaker 1: The comedy is real. You know, they say street language,
- 6:20Speaker 1: they say the N word, you know, they go there
- 6:23Speaker 1: with the with the with the regular vernacular, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: sagging pains. Ah, it's the look of the streets, and
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's enjoyable because of the fact that I was not
- 6:33Speaker 1: offended by anything I saw. I felt it was some
- 6:35Speaker 1: of the things were very relatable, but then the characters.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You love the characters and you're engaged by the realness
- 6:41Speaker 1: of it. Now your character is real. Now let's talk
- 6:43Speaker 1: about you know that the character Drew Uncle Drew. Now
- 6:48Speaker 1: I it was as a scene and it kind of
- 6:49Speaker 1: reminded me and training day. You know, it's a training
- 6:53Speaker 1: date moment. Remember when he was about to do homeboard
- 6:55Speaker 1: bad in in the in the bathtub and then it
- 6:58Speaker 1: came around and found out he he saved my niece.
- 7:01Speaker 1: That was a trainment. So you're a good one, Reshawn.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm really glad watching because in the moment in time
- 7:08Speaker 1: and on the day up, I'm not even understanding or
- 7:11Speaker 1: putting the correlation with that scene. With that that's exactly
- 7:14Speaker 1: what that was. That was training down. But to guess what,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I wasn't mad at it because I was like, we're
- 7:20Speaker 1: doing a comedy here and it was affacting. It wasn't
- 7:23Speaker 1: such an a parody where you like you just understood, like,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know what, that's the same you saw the parallel
- 7:29Speaker 1: or the because because believe me, it wasn't funny. It
- 7:33Speaker 1: wasn't even close to being funny. And training day, but yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: here it was funny. I was I was followed out
- 7:40Speaker 1: my chair. I was going, this boy food, this is ignorant.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Then your then your other boy. All he do is
- 7:45Speaker 1: play video games in the right and then the other boy.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He just opened the door let anybody in, you know. See,
- 7:57Speaker 1: so so you you got your niece in there, she
- 8:00Speaker 1: popping boomerang photos on and you get The thing about it, man,
- 8:05Speaker 1: is that this is just that's setting because Kevin is
- 8:08Speaker 1: a delivery man. Dane is a school teacher, if you
- 8:11Speaker 1: want to call it, because Kevin ain't really a good
- 8:14Speaker 1: delivery man, and Dad is not really a good school teacher.
- 8:17Speaker 1: He ain't neither one of them, right and so and
- 8:22Speaker 1: so that's what we have been laughing about. This series
- 8:25Speaker 1: that premiers on Showtime. It's called Flatbush Mr. Meaning starts
- 8:28Speaker 1: my Man. I would say stars my man my Son
- 8:31Speaker 1: Johnson because he's a pivocal character, because he's a community character.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He's in the neighborhood. He's that guy that you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: if he walks by you by you you know, you
- 8:39Speaker 1: probably clutch your bag. If you if he goes by
- 8:41Speaker 1: your car door, you probably push press lock on your door.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You know you're going this door. You might see him
- 8:47Speaker 1: and went back back out the door, you know. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: all those things because you got that look man. But
- 8:54Speaker 1: in the end, you have a heart. So when you
- 8:58Speaker 1: get the main thing, he has a heart. Got said,
- 9:00Speaker 1: there's a level of fairness that comes with Uncle Drew.
- 9:03Speaker 1: You what you see is what you get. You know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: he wears hard on his sleeve. You're not gonna get
- 9:08Speaker 1: no b as. You ain't gonna sugar coat and water
- 9:10Speaker 1: nothing down for you. And that's what you could appreciate.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And that's what you'll see. The characters Dan and Kevin,
- 9:16Speaker 1: they start to appreciate that. I think about Drew more
- 9:19Speaker 1: than anything because everything and everywhere else and so if
- 9:23Speaker 1: he had wish washy and they're surroundings they're so uncertain.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Did these uncertain characters that they could appreciate that Drew
- 9:31Speaker 1: is so you know, just add of me. Well, I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think I think let's let's let's be real about that character.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Because good writing has a way of telling a person's role,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and your role is about rules. You know. It's like
- 9:42Speaker 1: we all have rules. You know what I said, Somebody,
- 9:44Speaker 1: the speeding of it might be thirty five miles now
- 9:46Speaker 1: you drive forward it, but it's thirty five miles now,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and that's you. You know what I'm saying, if you
- 9:50Speaker 1: make a mistake, you hold people accountable for that mistake
- 9:53Speaker 1: based on Drew Uncle Drew's rules. You know what I'm saying.
- 9:58Speaker 1: If you respect the rules, you're gonna walk out of
- 10:00Speaker 1: the house a lot. Respect the rule. You might walk
- 10:03Speaker 1: out of the house. He kind of alive, but you're
- 10:05Speaker 1: gonna remember you broke that rule right exactly. There you go.
- 10:09Speaker 1: There's gonna be a learning lesson and that's what I
- 10:13Speaker 1: love about it. So but then again, we talked a
- 10:16Speaker 1: little bit off air before we got on the air,
- 10:17Speaker 1: because you get stereotyped. You know, people people see your photo.
- 10:21Speaker 1: He's gonna play a thug. Oh, he's gonna play a criminal,
- 10:23Speaker 1: or he can play this. And you know when I
- 10:24Speaker 1: first fell in love with your acting man, way back
- 10:27Speaker 1: on the wire, which was to the novel, when you
- 10:29Speaker 1: look at all the people, man, they were casting that serious.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh y'all working, Oh y'all doing big things. Man, to
- 10:37Speaker 1: the grace of God. That's right, though, you know what
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'm saying. So so you said why with that serious
- 10:42Speaker 1: so brilliant the cast, and now you get to understand
- 10:47Speaker 1: why that seeking that's the favorite song. When we were
- 10:49Speaker 1: shooting the wire, we don't know been making history, not
- 10:54Speaker 1: not not not you. I swear they got any one
- 10:57Speaker 1: of us telling you that we knew that show was
- 10:59Speaker 1: gonna be we'd be talking about it double the time
- 11:03Speaker 1: later than it was on Right, you couldn't have pick
- 11:06Speaker 1: no no when I say they de lined if they
- 11:08Speaker 1: said that they knew that we didn't know, you know
- 11:11Speaker 1: what I mean that it was the writing that cast.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Now you start to understand as everyone's careers Blossliman came
- 11:18Speaker 1: into fruition that no wonder that that was such a
- 11:21Speaker 1: great show. Absolutely there your character with way Bay we
- 11:23Speaker 1: Baya's right, he's steal. In my mind, there's two characters
- 11:28Speaker 1: states in my mind, you know, Stringer bound and Bay alright, alright,
- 11:33Speaker 1: string and strange. But when he got killed, I was hurt.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I said, oh no, he I know he went out
- 11:39Speaker 1: like oh when you look at that, that that was
- 11:42Speaker 1: that was really your first really um consistent acting role,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you know, like sure, yes, that was my first recurring
- 11:50Speaker 1: role on the television show for sure. Everything else before
- 11:53Speaker 1: that was either a one off in the film, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: like a co star role or U started you episiotic, right,
- 12:02Speaker 1: So let's let's talk about that. When you when you
- 12:04Speaker 1: get an opportunity and you finally because you work hard
- 12:06Speaker 1: for these opportunities and then you trying to get that
- 12:09Speaker 1: regular check and you know, like and and so you're
- 12:11Speaker 1: on all these challenges people because all you guys were
- 12:14Speaker 1: young stars at the time, young young up and comers.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna say that word up in corners because we
- 12:19Speaker 1: can turn any streaming network, any movie, any network television show,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and one of you guys are on it, what I'm saying,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and some of them two or three y'all in the
- 12:30Speaker 1: same series. Yeah, let's not play with you. I mean,
- 12:34Speaker 1: I don't popped up in a few shows or you know,
- 12:37Speaker 1: movies with my fellow cast mate from the show. Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 1: we don't go on skate now. So So with that
- 12:44Speaker 1: being said, what were your thoughts man, when you when
- 12:47Speaker 1: you when you were brought on the wire. Was it
- 12:49Speaker 1: just a paycheck or was it just hey man, finally
- 12:52Speaker 1: and finally seeing my craft being appreciated, my skills being appreciated.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Talk to us about that. I think it was a
- 12:58Speaker 1: mixture of both, but over role and ultimately it was
- 13:01Speaker 1: my my my craft being appreciated, cause I remember audition
- 13:05Speaker 1: and right auditioning for the Wire it was Prenin eleven.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Then we shot postion on the Levin. So you gotta
- 13:11Speaker 1: understand that a lot goes on in between the time
- 13:14Speaker 1: that it was first very introduced to me and then
- 13:17Speaker 1: it came into reality, right because the world stopped. The
- 13:21Speaker 1: world stopped in between that time and then resumed again,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and I had to come back with that energy. So
- 13:28Speaker 1: when I got the callback, I'm like why. I almost
- 13:31Speaker 1: didn't even remember what it was, but shaw, I'm like,
- 13:34Speaker 1: oh that show, okay, let's go. I got got back
- 13:37Speaker 1: you focused. I went out there Alexa Photos Office, our audition.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I remember now in the middle of the audition, I'm
- 13:43Speaker 1: doing my thing right, and the creator it was David
- 13:48Speaker 1: Simon in there, and then it was Cluke Johnson who
- 13:51Speaker 1: was one of the director for the pilot and a
- 13:52Speaker 1: few of the first season episodes. You know from Comic
- 13:56Speaker 1: Side Life on the Street. Cluk Johnson O g pick
- 13:58Speaker 1: up the Clark john one of them leaned over to
- 14:00Speaker 1: the other one in the audition, Rashawn, and say we bay.
- 14:06Speaker 1: So that's when that was my first inclination of something
- 14:10Speaker 1: like tangible because I'm auditioning in for DeAngelo by the way, right,
- 14:15Speaker 1: So I don't know if anybody can even imagine that,
- 14:17Speaker 1: because Larry Gillia did such a phenomenal job. When that that,
- 14:21Speaker 1: who could imagine me playing D'Angelo with him doing you
- 14:23Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. So when they said that, I
- 14:28Speaker 1: kind of lost my beat for a minute, but then
- 14:30Speaker 1: I got back on. I finished up, but that lingered
- 14:34Speaker 1: on with me for some reason until I got that
- 14:36Speaker 1: call from my agent that I booked it, Like who
- 14:39Speaker 1: is this we may character? And then even then I
- 14:41Speaker 1: still didn't know because they said, oh, we may here.
- 14:43Speaker 1: He'll be around for two or three episodes and you
- 14:46Speaker 1: already know the rest. It's finally here, the season of celebration,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and no matter how you celebrate with family and friends,
- 14:55Speaker 1: whether you're preparing for Rey Smuggos or Karamu lighting the

- 16:16Speaker 1: with his own catchphrase. I appreciate that Smokey's only said
- 16:20Speaker 1: only you can prevent wildfires, But I'm filling in because
- 16:23Speaker 1: there's a lot more to report, like when they're parched
- 16:26Speaker 1: or windy conditions out there. You gotta be extra careful
- 16:30Speaker 1: with things like burning yard wage. After all, wildfires can
- 16:34Speaker 1: start anywhere, even in your neck of the woods. Go
- 16:37Speaker 1: to Smokey Bear dot com to learn more about wildfire
- 16:40Speaker 1: prevention brought to you by the U. S. Forest Service,
- 16:42Speaker 1: your state Forrester, and the AD Council. Let's let's talk
- 16:47Speaker 1: about you man, because really, you know, bringing on the
- 16:49Speaker 1: show man because a lot of times, you know, uh,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you do interviews, they don't give a chance to tell
- 16:53Speaker 1: your story, get to tell the journey. And this is
- 16:56Speaker 1: about my conversation about that journey because so many people
- 16:59Speaker 1: need to hear that. You know, like I said, you
- 17:02Speaker 1: took something that was short and then you turn it
- 17:04Speaker 1: into a career. And that's really what's happening, because you
- 17:07Speaker 1: you know, it's like it's like a good like let's
- 17:10Speaker 1: gonna say that Chicago Bulls if you made the Chicago
- 17:13Speaker 1: Bulls guess when you're champion, all right, you when we
- 17:16Speaker 1: look at it back now, we didn't realize, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: the last dance shoulders, the greatness of the Chicago Bulls run.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Now when we look back at the y, you we go, wow,
- 17:28Speaker 1: look at all those people who came out of the wire.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So really when you look at her, Sorry, you were
- 17:34Speaker 1: being pushed by the best every day. Talk to us
- 17:38Speaker 1: about that. That's a that that's surrounding. Talk about the rehearsals,
- 17:43Speaker 1: talk about them, you know, being pushed and being mentored
- 17:46Speaker 1: as well to be your best during that time. I mean, Shaun,
- 17:50Speaker 1: one of the greatest experiences of my life. We're talking
- 17:53Speaker 1: about when du piss son, your son Lance Reddy, Claude Peters,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I mean, it keeps going. Joke John Done, Maan uh
- 18:02Speaker 1: Andre boy, your Michael K. Williams. You know what I'm saying.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It's just it's just it goes down the rabbit hole
- 18:08Speaker 1: so crazy. And then whether you knew who those people
- 18:11Speaker 1: were or not, by the end of the day's rat
- 18:14Speaker 1: you knew who they was. You feel what I'm saying
- 18:16Speaker 1: to Michael, Kay, we come on now, if you didn't know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: now you know. And so That's when I knew I
- 18:23Speaker 1: was being brought up with the best and I said, okay,
- 18:26Speaker 1: this is this is turning into something. Now I can
- 18:28Speaker 1: see where this is really going. Now I have a
- 18:31Speaker 1: career in a yeah, that uncertainty with you know, being rejected.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I mean, I'm in the line of work where I
- 18:37Speaker 1: get rejected or a limit. People don't really understand what
- 18:41Speaker 1: that feel like. You go home after these auditions and
- 18:44Speaker 1: you're not the best man, right right right, and then
- 18:48Speaker 1: then because you know that that's that's that's what it
- 18:50Speaker 1: really is, because rejection is so high in Hollywood, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: just is just imagine just going on auditions, auditions, auditions,
- 18:58Speaker 1: just didn't gonna job interview, job interview, job interviews, and
- 19:02Speaker 1: then they're just telling you you're not the one based
- 19:04Speaker 1: on you you're not the one, and you know you are.
- 19:07Speaker 1: But then you gotta eat that. You have to accept that,
- 19:10Speaker 1: dig down, regroup, revan, and say I'm gonna come out
- 19:14Speaker 1: and do better. Like listen, for instance, I'm gonna tell
- 19:16Speaker 1: you this is what happened for me. This is how
- 19:18Speaker 1: I learned the code. With this rejection. I figured it
- 19:22Speaker 1: like this, the more auditions you're going on the better
- 19:26Speaker 1: your chances you're booking something. Right, So as long as
- 19:28Speaker 1: you're going on auditions, you're working, you're shopping in your blade,
- 19:32Speaker 1: you're getting better, trust me, right, and then and then
- 19:35Speaker 1: it's supposed to be fun. But then when you don't
- 19:38Speaker 1: get the job, I mean, you know, there's no gratification
- 19:40Speaker 1: and you're like, what's so fun about that? But what
- 19:42Speaker 1: this is what I did for myself. I built the
- 19:44Speaker 1: system up that for every ten auditions, I'm gonna get one,
- 19:49Speaker 1: that one that temper sent RATEO out of ten, I'm
- 19:53Speaker 1: gonna get one. I was able to live and come
- 19:56Speaker 1: to grips and terms with that. And it was happening
- 19:58Speaker 1: every eight, every sick and then low low low wit
- 20:02Speaker 1: every other audition. Our book a roll. And then that's
- 20:05Speaker 1: when you start to you elevate in your mind, and
- 20:08Speaker 1: then you start to believe in yourself because it's a
- 20:11Speaker 1: relief system. You have to have to keep going. Wow.
- 20:14Speaker 1: So how did you get into actor? Let's get that out.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Let's hear the fans here about that. How did how
- 20:18Speaker 1: did Hasaan Johnson get into actor? Oh Man? All praise
- 20:22Speaker 1: due to Spike Lee, Lord and save your spight Lee.
- 20:28Speaker 1: He had an open call for a movie call Clockers
- 20:32Speaker 1: and a girl at school, Dad need to go to
- 20:35Speaker 1: the open audition because I was just this like boisterous
- 20:39Speaker 1: young boy. I played ball. I played football. I thought
- 20:41Speaker 1: I was gonna be a baller. And I was pretty smart,
- 20:44Speaker 1: you know. I was in the academic classes, like the
- 20:47Speaker 1: student athlete whatnot. And everybody try to get me to
- 20:50Speaker 1: be more proactive with the academic stuff, you know, the
- 20:52Speaker 1: glee club, the African Culture Club, the math club. I
- 20:56Speaker 1: didn't want to do it. I just wanted to play ball,
- 20:58Speaker 1: and you know, that's it. So she did me because
- 21:01Speaker 1: I always said I wanted to be on television. Oh well,
- 21:05Speaker 1: why don't you go to this spike me ordition, Mr,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I want to be on TV. And dared me in
- 21:10Speaker 1: front of like the whole lunch room. Right, I'm holding
- 21:13Speaker 1: court at lunch doing what I do, and she dared
- 21:16Speaker 1: me in front. So I did one of those. All right,
- 21:18Speaker 1: who's going with me? And then everybody did one of
- 21:21Speaker 1: these here, and I went. It was like a dare
- 21:25Speaker 1: I went. I got up that Saturday it was poured
- 21:28Speaker 1: dawn rain and it was in hall and at the
- 21:30Speaker 1: school he had at a public school in Hall and
- 21:32Speaker 1: I went up theory Sean and the rest is history.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I went to one audition turning the seven callbacks and
- 21:38Speaker 1: I got a principal role and Spike Lee film thirty
- 21:41Speaker 1: million dollar budget out the gate, Love it, Love it.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Now now we're making the transition. Top five. You know
- 21:48Speaker 1: that that I think Top five was the first time
- 21:50Speaker 1: I saw you in funny scenario, you know what I'm saying,
- 21:53Speaker 1: But you when yeah, I'll say that was the first.
- 21:56Speaker 1: They might be something we're missing before that, but let's
- 21:59Speaker 1: just go with that. With that, you know, this is
- 22:02Speaker 1: Rashawn's career path for Hasau. You know what I'm saying,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I'm tracking. I'm tracking, you know, So top five, Top
- 22:09Speaker 1: five was was the one for me. Just started looking
- 22:12Speaker 1: at you because because I always, like, you know, I've
- 22:13Speaker 1: been fortunate in Hollywood, the cast a lot of people,
- 22:16Speaker 1: you know, to see African American talent get pigeonhole. And
- 22:19Speaker 1: when I saw you in Top five, but you were
- 22:21Speaker 1: still being yourself, but the but the spin on your
- 22:24Speaker 1: words were funny. I said, this guy is funny. So
- 22:28Speaker 1: talk about that experience. And then we're gonna go to
- 22:31Speaker 1: the last o G with Tracy and Tiffany Hatters, where
- 22:34Speaker 1: you really started showing your comedy chops, talking about right
- 22:37Speaker 1: and and and and Top five birth met even being
- 22:40Speaker 1: able to have an opportunity and a shot to get
- 22:43Speaker 1: on last O g with Tracy Activity, which was a
- 22:46Speaker 1: blessed as well. But it all started with you know,
- 22:49Speaker 1: me telling my uh my manager, Adam Adam Robinson, like,
- 22:52Speaker 1: you know, I gotta get out of this this pigeonhole
- 22:56Speaker 1: that seemingly a pigeon hole, it's not quite one. Because
- 22:59Speaker 1: Adam used to always say, how's time come on there?
- 23:01Speaker 1: If you do something good, that's what they call you for.
- 23:04Speaker 1: You're great at what you do. That's not your fault.
- 23:07Speaker 1: You can't beat yourself down about that. So if it's
- 23:10Speaker 1: time to be the thug and this, you know, depending
- 23:12Speaker 1: on what's going on and what the criteria is, they
- 23:15Speaker 1: go out and be the best damn thug you can be.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Ain't nothing wrong with it. And then um, I said,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you all right, until we get to that bridge and
- 23:22Speaker 1: we can cross that bridge into the light of heart
- 23:24Speaker 1: and funny stuff, that's what we're gonna do. So what
- 23:27Speaker 1: happens is when Top five comes along, it's this character
- 23:31Speaker 1: that's kind of just played meant to play be played straight,
- 23:35Speaker 1: and and and in the world of all these comedians
- 23:38Speaker 1: and funny people, naturally funny people because you know, when
- 23:41Speaker 1: Jay Farrell talk, he's just funny. But Sherry Shefford talks,
- 23:44Speaker 1: she's just funny. When trades Me talk, that's just funny,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you know, Tris when they talk, they're just funny. That tonality,
- 23:51Speaker 1: that dick chance delivery is just funny. So they ain't
- 23:55Speaker 1: gotta do much because they're established, you know that. But
- 23:58Speaker 1: then here I go. So I'm not going to go
- 24:00Speaker 1: above and beyond either my best My best bet is
- 24:03Speaker 1: to stand my lane and go straight and ask what
- 24:06Speaker 1: I did because I was fortunate enough to get I
- 24:09Speaker 1: was privy to some info and their casting process that's
- 24:12Speaker 1: at hospital. Will say no names, but it was a
- 24:15Speaker 1: couple dudes came through here, a few heavy heads. He
- 24:18Speaker 1: just wasn't giving it up like you was doing it.
- 24:20Speaker 1: We're just gonna leave it at that, right, right, right,
- 24:22Speaker 1: And it was understood. Don't got to be explained, right absolutely,
- 24:26Speaker 1: And that's adoption of teams from foster care is a
- 24:29Speaker 1: topic not enough people know about, and we're here to
- 24:31Speaker 1: change that. I'm April Denuity, host of the new podcast

- 25:02Speaker 1: Our imagination, our sense of wonder, and our family bonds
- 25:06Speaker 1: grow too, because when we disconnect from this and connect

- 25:27Speaker 1: Look for your children's eyes to see the true magic
- 25:30Speaker 1: of a forest. It's a storybook world for them. You
- 25:34Speaker 1: look and see a tree. They see the wrinkled face
- 25:37Speaker 1: of a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky. They
- 25:40Speaker 1: see treasure and pebbles. They see a windy path that
- 25:43Speaker 1: could lead to adventure, and they see you. They're fearless.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Guide is this fascinating world. Find a forest near you
- 25:51Speaker 1: and start exploring and discover the forest dot org brought
- 25:54Speaker 1: to you by the United States Forest Service and the
- 25:56Speaker 1: AD Council. But we're talking about do you think about
- 26:00Speaker 1: your manager? Your manager is right and you were right,
- 26:03Speaker 1: because if you don't fight for change, Hussan, then people
- 26:07Speaker 1: will settle for what you get. And by fighting, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 1: let's talking what we're talking to. Anybody who's watching the
- 26:13Speaker 1: shot and listen to the show. Your brand, because you
- 26:16Speaker 1: have a brand and you fought for you know, I'm
- 26:18Speaker 1: not satisfied. It's like, you know, it's like this, because
- 26:21Speaker 1: you have a nice house, why can't you ask for
- 26:23Speaker 1: a bigger house, a better car, or more groceries in
- 26:26Speaker 1: the refrigerator. People like, well you got food in refrigerator.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I want more and that's how I want more. I'm
- 26:31Speaker 1: not content And and so that push enabled this conversation
- 26:37Speaker 1: we're having right now because when you got on to
- 26:39Speaker 1: the last O g and like I said, man, you
- 26:42Speaker 1: know I really went he funny man. But I'm gonna
- 26:46Speaker 1: just tell you about your funny Hussan. You know, like
- 26:48Speaker 1: you said, you mentioned you know Sheriff Shepard, Tracy Ferrell,
- 26:52Speaker 1: you mentioned, of course Chris Rock. They have built a legacy.
- 26:56Speaker 1: There's like I always tell people, stand up comedy just
- 26:58Speaker 1: like math. If you know what toothless two equal fourth,
- 27:00Speaker 1: then you know how to get there. Your style of
- 27:03Speaker 1: comedy is that you're just natural, but you don't even
- 27:06Speaker 1: understand you funny. And I think that's you know what
- 27:09Speaker 1: I'm saying, that's the gift because all those people have
- 27:11Speaker 1: walked on stage in front of hundreds of thousands of
- 27:14Speaker 1: people and made them lad. And so you are just
- 27:17Speaker 1: one of those guys who just naturally funny. If you
- 27:20Speaker 1: get around your family, you crack them up. I don't
- 27:22Speaker 1: give it you your family go hico you. But see
- 27:25Speaker 1: what what a comedian has done. He's taking his funny
- 27:28Speaker 1: from in front of his family to strangers. And so
- 27:33Speaker 1: because you're not done that, it questions your ability. But brother,
- 27:37Speaker 1: in the last O g that stepped you up. And
- 27:40Speaker 1: then you went back to the lot for life on ABC.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Nice check wasn't supposed to be funny. You're supposed to
- 27:46Speaker 1: be who are you supposed to be? Incarcerated? Then in
- 27:48Speaker 1: back of your mind you set these templates templates or
- 27:52Speaker 1: being able to do something more than just be a
- 27:54Speaker 1: stereotypical black thug. Then flatbush misdemeanor comes along. Tell us
- 28:00Speaker 1: about that whole process. I know we talked about it earlier,
- 28:03Speaker 1: but I gotta close the show because brother, I can't,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I can't wait to. So this is what it is.
- 28:09Speaker 1: The Sean This, like you said earlier, this is the
- 28:13Speaker 1: most tangible opportunity to really show my range because then
- 28:18Speaker 1: you're gonna say, I mean, you're talking about the first episode,
- 28:21Speaker 1: you got eight nine more to you got eight nine
- 28:25Speaker 1: more to and they let me go. Man, I'm telling
- 28:29Speaker 1: you Kevin and Dan Man that the two of the
- 28:32Speaker 1: greatest guys around right now that they are soon to
- 28:35Speaker 1: leave a deep footprint in this game. I'm telling you
- 28:38Speaker 1: what this one and it's all there for you and
- 28:41Speaker 1: they and they really let me go. They just let
- 28:44Speaker 1: me go like how they tell a box and let
- 28:46Speaker 1: your hands right right right right right. Yeah, that's the best,
- 28:49Speaker 1: the best analogy with this character I could come up with.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You guys are gonna be in for it's a roller coat.
- 28:55Speaker 1: There's so much emotion because you sit here, you talking
- 28:58Speaker 1: about this this Comedi dick stuff, This funny stuff. But
- 29:02Speaker 1: then you're gonna be so emotional, you're gonna be stressed
- 29:05Speaker 1: out a little bit, right, we know the thing about
- 29:07Speaker 1: but in a in a good way because Kevin's life
- 29:10Speaker 1: is stressed, is stressed because and he's relatable. Here's a
- 29:14Speaker 1: guy that their lives are not moving forward, y'all. I'm
- 29:18Speaker 1: gonna just be honest with their lives are in a
- 29:19Speaker 1: stand still. They got jobs that don't have career opportunities.
- 29:23Speaker 1: They don't even see the career in the opportunity. All
- 29:25Speaker 1: they are trying to do is get by. And I
- 29:27Speaker 1: think we know a lot of people who are just
- 29:29Speaker 1: trying to get by. That's why their characters are relatable.
- 29:32Speaker 1: But what happens is when they try to move ahead
- 29:35Speaker 1: and they start making mistakes. And that's when they wrote
- 29:39Speaker 1: the mistakes start to come in. That makes you humanizes
- 29:42Speaker 1: everything because the way and I I can say this,
- 29:45Speaker 1: the way Kevin encounters Uncle Drew as a delivery and
- 29:49Speaker 1: when he comes into his place, he makes a mistake.
- 29:53Speaker 1: The consequences of that mistake drives the first episode and
- 29:58Speaker 1: the long term relates ship. Am I right, Yes, it does.
- 30:02Speaker 1: That one mistake and you know I always say Rashaan.
- 30:05Speaker 1: In real life, I always tell people you can't be
- 30:09Speaker 1: upset about what is and what's not at the moment
- 30:12Speaker 1: in time, because what you have to realize is every
- 30:15Speaker 1: decision you made from out the wound to this day,
- 30:19Speaker 1: right now and in May, is that every direct decision
- 30:25Speaker 1: led you the way you are, wherever you're currently happy, sad,
- 30:30Speaker 1: whatever the case says, right, et cetera. Every decision you
- 30:34Speaker 1: may lead you up to right now, and guess what,
- 30:37Speaker 1: it is a beautiful right now. He's I'm telling man.
- 30:41Speaker 1: The blessing in this interview, man, was that I'm always
- 30:45Speaker 1: been a fan of Hussan. I've always been a fan,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and then and then going to showtime saying I want
- 30:50Speaker 1: to interview my bar but I got to see the pilot.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I saw the pilot, man, I am recommended. I'm mad
- 30:57Speaker 1: because it's several weeks away before premier, so no listen.
- 31:01Speaker 1: But you made my whole month the rest of my
- 31:03Speaker 1: year is Sean, because you know we we don't know
- 31:06Speaker 1: what we're in for, so you're telling me it's rest
- 31:08Speaker 1: assurance that we're doing something right. I'm chasing herself. You know,
- 31:14Speaker 1: I ain't got time to be lying to you okay, brother, Yo,
- 31:18Speaker 1: I'm just saying like that. It's funny. Okay, they are
- 31:21Speaker 1: straight funny man and you and you deliver it on
- 31:24Speaker 1: a high level of opportunity because you're a regular guy
- 31:27Speaker 1: man started out on a dare. But you saw it through.
- 31:30Speaker 1: And that's what people understand is that is that whether
- 31:33Speaker 1: you see it through. You know, if people tell you
- 31:35Speaker 1: or challenge you, then don't don't. Don't cower down to
- 31:38Speaker 1: the challenge. See it through and see what the opportunity
- 31:41Speaker 1: barrass itself. And that's what you're going is half the battle.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Gotta show up. But my man, I want to thank
- 31:47Speaker 1: you for coming on money and make conversation. Hassan. You
- 31:49Speaker 1: know we're gonna catch back. You know, I gotta come
- 31:56Speaker 1: back to you, flatfish, Mr Mean. The premiers May two, three,
- 32:00Speaker 1: ten thirty Eastern Pacific time on Showtime. Oh Man, Hassan
- 32:03Speaker 1: Johnson plays Uncle Drew again. There's no character like it
- 32:07Speaker 1: on TV right now. He's gonna change the game if
- 32:11Speaker 1: they do what I think. That's an Emmy that's an
- 32:13Speaker 1: Emmy winning character. You get. I'm not even gone. You
- 32:16Speaker 1: took it. I'm not even gonna say nothing. Talk to
- 32:19Speaker 1: you later. Brother, don't say nothing. If you want to
