- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast.
- 0:24Feed if. You haven't done that yet.
- 0:26Feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28When you're ready, let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:44In John chapter 16, as Jesus continues his final words to his
- 0:47disciples before he's betrayed and executed, he speaks to them
- 0:51about the Holy Spirit. I think if we're not careful,
- 0:54we'll miss the power and importance of what Jesus
- 0:56promises here and as a result, miss what is available to us as
- 1:00believers. Listen to verses 5 through 15
- 1:02from this chapter. It says, But now I am going to
- 1:06him who sent me, and none of you ask, where are you going?
- 1:09But because I have said these things to you, sorrow.
- 1:11Has filled your heart. But I will tell you the truth.
- 1:13It is to your advantage that I go away.
- 1:16For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you.
- 1:19But if I go, I will send Him to you, and He, when He comes, will
- 1:22convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement,
- 1:26concerning sin because they do not believe in Me, and
- 1:29concerning righteousness because I go to the Father and you no
- 1:31longer see me, and concerning judgment because the ruler of
- 1:35this world has been judged. I have many more things to say
- 1:38to you, but you cannot bear them now.
- 1:40But when He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into
- 1:43all the truth. For He will not speak on His own
- 1:45initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He
- 1:48will disclose to you what is to come.
- 1:51He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose
- 1:54it to you. All things that the Father has
- 1:57are Mine, therefore I said that he takes of mine and will
- 2:01disclose it to you. Did you catch that?
- 2:04Jesus tells his disciples, these men who have left everything to
- 2:08spend all of the last three years learning at Jesus feet,
- 2:11that it is to their advantage. It is better for them that Jesus
- 2:15is leaving because if He doesn't leave then the Holy Spirit
- 2:18cannot come. This had to be hard to fathom.
- 2:22The Son of God, the Messiah, is standing right in front of them.
- 2:25He's been revealing to them what is to come.
- 2:27He's been teaching them who God is and how He operates in the
- 2:30world. And now he says that he is
- 2:32leaving, but that it's actually a good thing for them because of
- 2:36the one who is coming. Can you imagine?
- 2:39What would you give to be able to go back to the 1st century
- 2:42and spend a few hours, much less a few years, learning from Jesus
- 2:45Himself? So if this is true, that his
- 2:49departure is to their advantage, what are we missing?
- 2:53We're missing the power, the miracle, that is the presence of
- 2:55God in us through the Holy Spirit.
- 2:58Jesus in his human form was not omnipresent.
- 3:01He had placed on himself the limitations of humanity.
- 3:04He is the image of God the Father.
- 3:06But He could only be in one place at a time, having one
- 3:09conversation at a time. The Holy Spirit that has
- 3:11promised fills all believers with the actual presence of God.
- 3:15God Himself is not just standing next to you or nearby you.
- 3:19He is dwelling inside of you, He is within you, convicting you of
- 3:23sin, teaching you what the Scriptures mean, revealing to
- 3:26you the depths of truth about God and His salvation plan that
- 3:29the disciples were even unable to bear before the Holy Spirit
- 3:32came. After the book of John, we'll
- 3:34study Acts together, and we'll see that the birth of the church
- 3:38and its explosive growth is tied directly to the outpouring of
- 3:41the Holy Spirit, the presence and power of God in dwelling the
- 3:45hearts of his people. Jesus was called Emmanuel, God
- 3:48with us, but what he enabled through his death and
- 3:51resurrection, justifying a people in God's sight so that
- 3:54holy God could dwell in sinful but now redeemed man, brings an
- 3:59even greater fullness to this understanding of God with us.
- 4:02He is not far off. He is not merely near.
- 4:06He dwells within us. He displays His power through
- 4:09us. So do not neglect this reality.
- 4:12Do not neglect this third person of the Trinity.
- 4:15If you are in Christ, you have received the Holy Spirit.
- 4:18God Himself lives in you. Walk in His power, depend on
- 4:22Him. Allow Him to convict you, to
- 4:25teach you, to unveil God's truth to you, to glorify Jesus in your
- 4:29life.
